Good food

Ari Modugno

Food excellent highly recommend. I have eating here through delivery 6 times and dined in once. Delivery- Vindaloo Somosa and Chapati excellent. Dine in was attentative but not distracting. We had mixed grill chapati and Aloo Gobi. Everything was delicious. We like to sweat on spice and our delivery was excellent , but on dine In, they took it easy on us;) Hi Bombay Definitely worth a Visit.

Melissa Selvon

Best curry in Portland... tip always go for a spice 10... lamb vindaloo is excellent

Mac Coldwell

The samosas saree amazing. We had a great time. Wonderful service and the naan was really good as well. Reasonably priced and a good amount of parking. The restaurant is on the ground floor but there are a few steps to climb at the door.

James McDonough

Many good Indian dishes. It always seems to be empty, though.

Kaurik Raj

Good food and friendly service.

Janakiram Hr

Nice Indian hotel to have Indian food. Had chana Batura in USA. Mostly North East waiters and staff at a distant place. Nicely located in the corner with parking facility for 4 cars.

Jayson

Good food, good service.

Aaron Scheffel

Same Indian food I found in DC. Very good.

DLB Harvey

Delicious food. Wonderful service. Intimate but not overly romantic atmosphere.

Best Indian Food Ever ❗️

Joe Presser

This is the best Indian food in Portland. They don’t have much competition it seems like in terms of Indian food in Portland (hint hint to other chefs of Indian cuisine reading this review, please open more Indian restaurants in Portland), but even with a hundred other Indian restaurants, Hi Bombay would still come out on top.

Janice Jaffe

Food was incredibly dry and host/owner was very unsociable. Would not return.

Jesse

Comfortable and delicious food at a fair price. Their coconut soup is out of this world. However, the lack of a lunch buffet is what keeps me from coming here more than once every few months.

Tiffani N

Love it here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chicken Labedar is the best ever!

Sandeep Chaudhary

Tasty Indian cuisine

Jitender Dhankhar

Great choice & great food.

Best Indian restaurant in Portland

cwalkenisgod

A great place for Indian food in Portland. Hi Bombay is located in the "Cinamon Building", down the street from Brian Boru's and near the statue of the director John Ford. The interior is cozy, clean, and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. There is a large television that constantly plays Bollywood dance routines, which is nice to have during lulls in conversation. The food is amazing and pretty decently priced. They give you free papadum (very addictive spicy/crispy bread, almost like tortilla) at the beginning of the meal and their garlic naan is to die for. My favorite dish is pretty basic - chicken Tikka masala - although I love most of their dishes I've tried. Would definitely recommend for a night out if you're in the area, but they also have carry out.

Daniel Cummings

Quality Indian cuisine. Awesome service. Mango lahasi made my gf so happy.

Anchor Bandit

excellent food and terrific service with perfect amount of spice

mjtplayer

The food here is good. Entrees are flavorful and made with quality ingredients. The naan is very good, rice was OK nothing special, soup was OK too. Great service, clean place and friendly. 4 stars in Maine; 3 stars otherwise.

Amit Singh

Food is really good... Must go

Steven Sellers

Butter chicken was great, and the garlic naan was probably the best I’ve ever had. Sam did a great to take care of us while we in. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Allegra Kurtz-Rossi

Sooooo good! Big menu, big portions, small price tag. For people who haven't had Indian food before this is the place to go. The staff will give you good suggestions and their spice range of 0-10 let's you customize how spicy you want each dish to be.

Sammy K

This will be my go to place for Indian cuisine next time I'm in Maine. The service was great and the food was even better. We were a group of 4 and we ate to our fill and had to take home the leftovers. Thank you very much.

Krishna H. Patel

I really enjoyed the food here. Service and food was amazing. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area

Junior Curbow

Excellent food. Great service. Good pricing. Cozy atmosphere.

Savannah Daras

Some of the best Indian food I've had! I've been here tons of times and it's fantastic every time. It is a small and quaint place, so if you're looking for a big business fast paced type of restaurant, then it might not be for you. It feels very cozy. But I enjoy that. The servers are casual and not overly attentive, but again all I really care about is good food. I feel as if a lot of the reviewers are simply not understanding the fact that there are some cultural differences at play. America is one of the few places that have such peppy and overbearing servers at restaurants, when you travel elsewhere the waiters/waitresses usually leave you alone unless you need something. I'd prefer it that way anyway. That being said, the staff here IS quite friendly, you just have to know how to talk to them. As I'm kind of a regular now the main gentleman that works there always jokes with me and remembers my order. Also I love that they are very vegan friendly! Most anything can be made vegan easily. The food is very authentic, delicious, and affordable. No complaints at all.

Raiyan Alghamdi

Was wonderful. Went with a party of 6, food was delicious and the food came out fresh. Would love to come back again.

April And Ahmed Shaur

Delicious authentic food.

Clayton Mixer

The food isn't spicy, the portions are small, and the price is quite high. But, the food does taste good.

Francisco Santana

Food is amazing. Great service. Will definitely return for seconds. Price is a little on the expensive side but I'd say it is worth it.

Gary J. Winthorp

I ordered chicken. Guess what they gave me... literal guess... organs freaken organs chicken organs. Just take that in. I would not be surprised if you are handed a heavy law suit coming up. You discuss me with your gross food. This is a America be mc Donald's or be nothing. Learn that people just want simple things, chicken breast meat, not human meat or anything else you might make. Burgers, steak and french fries.

Neil

I LOVE the food here. The staff is very friendly and the food is amazing. I eat here all the time even still, I really appreciate the quality of the food, the saag paneer is scrumptious and the prices are very competitive for quality food.

Michael McConnell

Really quality Indian food !

George Barber

Love their food. Same owners as Shere Punjab in Brunswick. Both great. Unless you want spicy, stay under 4 on a scale of 10.

kaurik raj

Good good. Great value.

pushpam keshri

I thoroughly enjoyed the food and good service too. Free Wi-Fi helped too!!

Elias grimm

Great staff and service. Fantastic food!

Hrishikesh Lohagaonkar

It's awesome

Rosie Davis

Under new management and you can tell. The food and the service is fantastic. I love this restaurant and will be back as often as I can.

Catherine Krouse

Delicious dinner, good service. I had the aloo mutter which was great. We chatted with the staff, Shivu and Sabin who were very friendly and helpful.

Misti Rafferty

This place is a hidden gem in Portland! I really love their Chicken Shami Korma, and the selection is huge. I ordered a Garlic Naan and it was so fresh and crispy, and the Vege Pakora is to die for. I would recommend this place to anyone. I used to only get take out here, but they are so nice when I dine in now! Plus, you get to listen to fun Bollywood music while you eat...excellent.

Michael Halbert

What a lucky find. Was in town for the Mercy Me tour. Was a short walk from the Cross Arena. Had the Lamb Vindaloo with Garlic Naan. Was good and spicy.

Andrew Davis

Service was good, Food was OK. They asked how spicy I wanted my vindaloo, on a scale of 1-10. I said 11. When the food arrived, it was a 5 at best. If you want spicy Indian food, go to India palace instead.

Shirley Ramee

Food is great. Staff is friendly. I love this place. I wish parking was better but I can walk from my office on a nice day.

Ammar

Bad stuff

Tony Pelton

Good food. Good service. I've never been disappointed, and I'm a regular.

AK G

Don't Eat here !!! Me and my wife fell violently ill after eating here. Very unhygienic food and bad kitchen. I don't recommend this place at all. Even the prices are stupid for a place like this, I could buy a 5star hotel food for their prices.

Preeti Verma

I never had the worst dinner ever other than here...dinner items ordered for pick up were barely cooked.. and costly too. We had to throw whole food in garbage. Extremely disappointed from this place and will never recommend to anyone to go here.

Jonathan Foster

Tasty, I had the masala tea and it was very delicious.

Chrystin Mullen

Chicken tikka masala was very watery, and chicken tasted old. Service was very poor and our old server was very unsanitary (not cleaning hands and wiping his nose) also, our plates were sticky when we receives them overall very dissapointed with our visit

Thomas Murphy

Went here for lunch on a Saturday. Staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The food was delicious. We got the shrimp curry and chicken masala, both great picks. The mango lassi was very good. The paneer naan was also great. It was a very satisfying meal.

Jen George

The fiid is excellent and authentic with vegan and vegetarian options. The restaurant is quiet in the daytime, and you can call ahea with your orders.

DD

Loved the vegetable birayani! And daal shorba!!! Great service!

Amishar Frutkoff

We stumbled upon this place looking for a good affordable lunch. Excellent, delicious Indian cuisine, very authentic vibe and character!

Phil Marrone

The curries are way too salty. It's like swallowing sea water, you feel the salt in my throat for the rest of the day.

Miles Heise

Best of the 3 downtown. Absolutely incredible naan.

Nivea Agrawal

Best Indian food so far. The curry was yummylicious. Tandoori Roti was crispy, well cooked and huge in size. Samosas were excellent too. Must visit. Would definitely go again if get a chance

Joshua Kosakowski

Best Naan I had in my whole dang life. (rest of the food was aces too).

Jonathan Leighton

Everyone should try the Chicken Tikka Masala! Hands down my favorite! And the Naan is always fresh and hot as well!

Sarah Gumlak

Wow so tasty just yum. Authentic and flavorful, and bonus points for Bollywood movies playing in the background. Apparently this place used to be not quite as good before I moved here, but they're under new(ish) management, so I've been reintroducing folks and they are very happy with the obvious improvement. My favorite Indian food in Portland. Can be a touch slow, but more leisurely than annoying (but if you're on a tight schedule, maybe try another time). And if you're white but actually want real spice, you're gonna have to convince them. The first time I asked for "medium", it tasted about as spicy as ketchup.

Raw Vegan Guru

I am an Indian (Northern) spiritual food person. I have had Indian cuisine around the country and this is one of the best authentic warm Indian restaurant. The staff are amazing, friendly, experienced and generous. This is the best Indian in Maine beside Sheere Punjab in Brunswick.

Shirwac Hussain

Nice cozy spot, friendly staff, and the food is great, but it's a little pricey.

Brittany Cole

Every dish I’ve tried is phenomenal. Affordable and large portions work great for leftovers. Just wow!

Liam Jacquet

Great authentic Indian food. Very friendly hosts. Can't recommend Hi Bombay enough

Gerardo Castro

It was delicious

Karen McIver

Great food

Mike Revel

Nice little restaurant with an authentic taste. Seldomly do I find an Indian restaurant comparable to the one in my home town- this hits the spot.

ANIL KARKI

Amazing indian food

Swami Narasimhan

In the last twenty years, I have had some pretty awful Indian food in the US. Hi Bombay is a shoo-in among that pantheon of awful places to eat. The entrees we ordered were flavorless, bland and insipid. Service was awful too. The decor is tacky and nice the restaurant is smelly and musty.

Bryan Martins

Tasty and reasonably priced Indian fare. Flavors are fresh tasting. Service was good and helpful. We did experience a very cold appetizer, was hot on the outside and cold in the middle which shows it may have been frozen. They promptly made a new order that was quite good. Naan was very good and complimented the meals nicely and as re strongly suggested. Chutneys are served with all entrees and can really enhance the flavors of the dish. Definitely a solid choice for Indian food.

Andrew Eppinger

Great Indian food!

Ashish Gupta

The food here is awesome. Price is little higher; servings / portions size is also on the higher side. On a scale of 1 to 10, 7 means spicy!! Dedicated parking on the rear side is only available in the evening or over the weekend else need to park on road side.

Celine Robitaille

Delicious

Ravi Verma

Frankly telling the WORST restaurant I have ever had food from at least in US. I visited recently on Jun 30 2018 and ordered for dinner to go. Food was very costly and the condition was pathetic. Dal Makhani they provided a complete one with Chana Dal that tasted bad.. And the Naan were complete not even half or quarter cooked. We had to throw whole dinner worth of $50.

Peter Mancini

I came in at 5PM with my two children with no other customers in the place and it took 35 minutes for our food to come out. The waiter didn't offer an apology or anything. When I mentioned that the food had taken a long time (and my kids were getting very restless at this point) all he said was that it was because the rice had not been ready. I found that curious because several take out orders had been filled before we received our food. We did receive your bread (greasy and the oil smelled old) well before our curries so we had cold bread with our curries. The food was sub-par. Cold papadam, greasy over-salted entrees, dirty utensils, no soap in the bathroom, gross toilet. Its too bad because we love Indian food. We will stick to Brunswick's Sheer Punjab which has always been flawless whenever we go.

Stephen Davis

Okay so it's Feb. 2017 and Hi Bombay is under new management/ownership. And boy, does it ever show. The taste of the food, the quality and friendliness has all gone up while the wait time has gone down. They still play Bollywood movies inside and the tables are the same, thank god. I absolutely love this place. They serve the best Indian food in the city for sure. I've tried every other Indian restaurant and nothing compares. The new Hi Bombay is the way to go!

Z Malik

THE BEST BUTTER CHICKEN IN THE FREAKING WORLD OMG OMG OMG

Shai Bareket

Amazing! The service! The dishes! Taset, smell, all traditional Indian don't expect for fancy, or pricy. Just great!

Nathaniel Knowlton

Every time we come to Portland to drop my sister off for school or for a vacation Hi Bombay is a must do. The food is amazing and the service is great. I couldn't ask for more mostly it's because I'm full.

Mihir Patel

Really good Indian food in the state that has barely any really good Indian options

Sakshi Sharma

Food was good, though the services were really poor. I ordered veg options and food was good, it came really late, the people working here was not very happy that they actually have to work.

Brent Hoots

Great service - fantastic food!

Michael Lionetta

under new management and such an improvement already everything is getting better and a personable host fast service a must try

Popeye Kahn

Great food at an awesome location but the price is way out of reach for people that want to get turned on to the food of India.

Greg Goodwin

Excellent food and service. Hi Bombay is now being managed by Shere Punjab of Brunswick which is also an excellent establishment.

k c

Amazing food experience!!! Delicious authentic Indian cuisine with great service . Lunch menu is dirt cheap but the portions are still big.

meenakshi srivastava

Service is not good , the staff served bread few minutes before the curry and they were lost between the customer whom to serve what . Food is not that great

Jacqui Harmon

Delicious! Friendly service!

Mugdha Joshi

Really good food and friendly staff.

Yu Ra

really great food and atmosphere. price is what you'd expect from a restaurant in downtown portland, but it's definitely worth it.

ajay kumar

My friend and i went to this restaurant and we order some dishes and naan and it was horrible the dishes were like watery and the naan were burned and dishes are way over priced. I wouldn't recommend this place at all...

Judge Leavitt

Loved it, I was not expecting such good Indian food in Maine.

Ry

Got this delivered through the local delivery service 2dinein. Absolutely delicious- better than some of the other places I've had around Portland. I'm definitely going to be ordering again.

Doug Kohout

Great place to eat. Excellent service. Great food. Definately up for a repeat.

Harmony Harriman

The best Indian Cuisine i have found in the state. Service is just as impressive. Never disappointed!

Hunter

My go to in Portland for Indian food.

DF ELDREDGE

Hadn't had Indian in ages! Went there for dinner. They didn't have Palaak Paneer, but they had plenty of other Palak choices. We had Palak Aloo, Daal Malika, Chicken Tikka Masala and, of course, Raita and Garlic Naan. Asked for medium on the heat spectrum. Came with a large bowl of fluffy basmati rice and a tray of three condiments (a spicy chutney, regular chutney, tamarind). ALL of it was DELICIOUS and the servings generous. Even though there were three of us, we packed up leftovers (that if we are not piggy) will make a nice lunch for two of us. Oh, and the naan? To die for! We ordered extra!!!

Rudri Randeria

Location : easy to find on Google Maps. Ambience : cosy, comfy place. Food : great Indian cuisine. The food is very authentic ( I know because I'm Indian). Must try the Masala Chai - for the authentic Indian chai tea. Service: Quick service. Staff folks there are very friendly.

scott moulding

Great food! Low prices. Friendly staff. You will not leave hungry. Can't remember the last time I ate so much.

Dave Foster

I like this place, super friendly service... Maybe a little bit too friendly? JK lol We had a very nice time here :)

Brendon Bean

It's been a while since dining here. It has not disappointed. Friendly staff! Great balanced flavors. Just the right heat in appropriate dishes. Appetizers not oily at all. Crisp and flavorful. The Chicken Tikka Saag, Chana Masala and Lamb Vindaloo simply amazing! After a rather disappointing Indian Food experience I had in Cambridge Massachusetts last week this visit has fully restored my faith and appreciation of Indian cuisine. Thank you Hi Bombay Portland Maine!

garima narula

Amazing food great environment

Subo Deb

I got two biriyani to go from this place for take out. I will have to say the food lacked flavor and was unnecessarily oily!! So may be try out something else if you are there.

Emily Coello

Best Indian food I have ever had in my entire life

Avdhoot Harshe

This is an indian restaurant, run by Nepalese and owned by punjabi management. Sounds weird right! The food somehow is reflective of this confusion... Don't get me wrong, the food that was served to me was good but the Menu is not reflective of what they are planning to serve... For e.g. Dal Makhani was served yellow lentils and their menu says so! Shahi Paneer was Paneer Kadhai in the morphed form.... So despite claiming and charging money for 'Fine Indian Cuisine' ...it fails to provide a fine experience.. I am vegetarian so i only tried those, not sure about the non- vegetarian menu....

Elizabeth Mitchell

This was my first time trying this place. I was so excited based on reviews, which makes this all the more disappointing. We were told 20 minutes, arrived on time, and had to wait for another 20. When we arrived at home, we found they had forgotten an item and had to return. I thought the food was average. However my mum and boyfriend did not remotely enjoy their meals.Where this went really south on my end, and compelled me to to write a review, was after all this poor service, I found chicken in what was supposed to be my vegetarian entrée... As I can not have chicken, I ended up having to discard my dinner and now I have nothing.

Hina Garg

The food was okay, we ordered Chana masala, paneer makhani and roti. Being from out of town I had greater expectations from a restaurant on the harbor.

olive jones

Friendly AND delicious.

Mike Twitchell

Excellent atmosphere, excellent service and excellent food. Cozy surroundings and friendly staff make your experience that more enjoyable.

Rich Coughran

Really great! Naan is enormous and fluffy.

jeevan mandanna

No Bottled water After ordering then they comeback after 5 min and say preparation will late . Even ambiance is not great

Ralph Valente

It was ok, neither bad nor great.

Benedict Cassie

As a Brit living in America it is hard to find a place that does good Indian food but this place is very good. Would recommend for British expats.

C O

Beat Naan everrrrr

Dinesh Gundu

Expensive...No parking...Not so clean cutlery... Also there weren't any customers when we went.

Anne Chadwick

Delicious food and fantastic service.

Ali Jaffri

Super clean place with delicious food. The owner was super friendly and on our road trip from MD to ME we found our favorite tea.

Katharine Christie

I went here because it was highly rated but unfortunately, was disappointed. The food lacked any seasoning including even just salt, and the Korma I ordered had sliced tomatoes and raw green pepper (in a cooked dish), neither of which I’ve had any time I’ve had this dish in the past. The service was great and prices were affordable.

Todd Carpenter

Outstanding service great atmosphere and terrific food. Looking forward to going back.

mary stewart-dore

First time enjoying an excellant meal here. ..will definitely be back for more. Menu was great, servers attentive, price very good.

Zach Taylor

Ordered a chicken dish, got tofu instead. Ordered 2 orders of Samasa, only got one. The naan was maybe 8 inches in diameter. Even if I had received everything I ordered, I still would have felt like I got less than I paid for.

Evan Morse

Great staff and amazing food!

Rui Fernandes

Very good, and authentic food. Reasonable prices, with appropriately kitschy decor, and good service.

Justin Knowles

Fantastic , great service. Definitely the extra mile .

Christopher Kessler

I ordered a lunch special over the phone to pick up. The old man on the other end of the line kept trying to up-sell me to the dinner portion. I had to refuse more than once. Then he kept asking, "What else?" "I just want the lunch special", I said. "Not even bread? You aren't going to get anything else?", he said. "Is that a problem!?" I asked. Rude. When I came to pick up and pay, he made a comment that I was paying with "big money", a $20 bill. It came to $8.51 after tax. He gave me only $11 back and kept the change. I can understand if it were a couple pennies or something, but 49 cents? I just walked out, not wanting to get in an argument over 49 cents. I open the bag, and I have a measly cup (literally one cup) worth of vegetable korma and a container of rice. So, I basically just paid $9 for horrible service and a cup of basmati rice. It has been a few years since I've been there. I remember it not being bad, but I am never going back again and I recommend people go somewhere else.

Indu Bhushan

Great location in downtown Portland,Maine. We were group of 6 and ordered (rogan josh, chicken lababdar, daal makhni, roti, tandoori roti, garlic naan, panner naan). Spice level= indian spice. All items were too delicious with perfect spice level and they maintained the authenticity of taste. Highly recommended place if u are here and hunting for authentic north indian food.

Louis Masi

Great food, great prices, really enjoy this place. Highly recommended.

Julie C

Good food, friendly service

arman hossain

Rude service by the owner

Elizabeth Fraser

Super Indian good. Décor could use an update but food is delicious!

Bhawna Shukla

One of the worst indian restaurant. Old food ,too oily and very dirty restroom inside. I would suggest everyone not to go there
