As you know, we do not usually stop to give tatings when they are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Restaurant is classified in the category of Dumpling restaurant.
Reviewing for the atmosphere only (food was good). The music was excessively loud and disrupted every bit of our experience. All of the music is late 90' radio hits - lots of Alanis Morisette, big hits from No Doubt and the Cranberries, etc. This music, besides being overly loud, is highly lyrical and dynamic and broke into every bit of our dining experience- distracted conversation and train of thought. I felt almost like I was part of a fringe CIA music torture experiment. It truly impacted my experience enjoying the food and being able to see enjoy catching up with my guest. If the music at your Hannaford shopping trips drives you nuts, you'll really not like the volume 11 Bao Bao version of it. We chose a Wednesday night in fall to be out of the way of a rush crowd and summer season to visit the restaurant. Something I considered wondering about the music- does management make the dining room intentionally unpleasant they can have faster table turnover. The overall atmosphere at Bao Bao was not nice. Uncomfortable chairs much too low to the ground I had no where to put my legs. Tables spaces much too close together. And then at the end of the meal, the woman behind me and I started colliding, since we were not sitting bent forward towards our plates, our heads were touching. Bathroom toilet was broken and constantly running. This is not the incredible Portland food experience I was dreaming of. Im glad to see most of the ratings for this restaurant are positive. I want to share my feedback for management staff to consider, if it's helpful.
Delicious. We tried 2 different kinds of dumplings, the famous "slaw" and wings. Very tasty and can't wait to try other items. It's a bit tight for space, and close to other diners when it's busy, and could be uncomfortable for some.( We love each other and we loved the food and service too , but I think diners should be aware.) Simple and tasteful all around!
This place is amazing! Food is phenomenal and I can not say enough nice things about the management and wait staff. If you don't check Bao Bao out while in Portland you are definitely missing out on expertly prepared food and all around good vibes.
Bao Bao is consistently one of my favorite places in Portland. Don't miss their 1/2 priced dumpling happy hour.
Get the bulgogi beef you will not be disappointed. Actually get two (just for yourself don't share).
Fantastic dumplings, beef bulgogi was unbelievably good. Serving sizes are very generous for the price, can't wait to go back.
Super fun and delicious! Good for a quick lunch with great specials, but also great late night bites and drinks! Definitely make it to one of their Tap Takeovers for a change from the normal menu.
Delicious. Try the cabbage salad
Great food for great prices!
Totally fine for take out. Staff was great and nice about us ordering to-go relatively close to closing. The bulgogi dumpling was the most interesting, the kung pao dumpling was ok, but a little under seasoned. The pork steamed dumplings were good, but fell apart easily. Overall, a tasty quick bite and good service, so would definitely go back again to try in-person menu or their brunch.
Delicious. Friendly staff too. This is also a non-tipping restaurant, which is interesting. Give this place a try, you won't regret it.
I really enjoyed all of the food. Beers seemed small and expensive. Our server was very helpful with suggestions. I would definitely eat here again!
The food was pretty good though I I think that's plastic chopsticks were a poor choice considering they entirely lack grip and most of the foods are a little tricky to handle.
Given the reviews, I was very excited to go here. But the reviews oversold it, unfortunately. My fried chicken and cashew dumplings were very good. Crispy on the outside and great flavor inside. Greens in oyster sauce is more of a soup, not veggies with a sauce. Just not what we expected. Steamed pork dumplings were nothing special. Bang bang chicken (cold chicken salad) was very good. Big flavor. Smashed cucumbers were fine. My wife had the shrimp wonton noodle soup and could not eat it. I tried it as well. Tastes like a barn yard. She actually ended up using the broth from the Greens in oyster sauce.
My friends and I went here for dinner and the wait was a hour (as is typical around here). The staff was friendly and the food overall good. My bf and I got the noodle dish "ants climbing up a tree" and the smashed cucumbers. Both were delicious although as someone who loves spicy, beware that the noodle dish is very hot! That chili oil really clings to your mouth! We also tried the asian slaw and bulgogi beef dumplings. The slaw is definitely fresh and the dumplings are good. My overall impression is that this place fills a culinary need in the area but by no means are these dumplings authentic. The ones I had were a bit mushy and lacked texture. I would say that their small plate options are a lot tastier/more authentic than the dumplings they are known for.
Great food, fun vibe, sweet spot!!
Awesome service and wonderful food. Sitting at the bar is a treat. Clean, neat little spot. Will be coming back here for sure.
Din Sum brunch was so good. The staff is super friendly and informative. What could have been an awkward experience was super fun. Everything was flavorful and delicious.
Was really excited about this place but unfortunately the service was reaaaally slow and the dumplings were decent at best. Cool atmosphere though.
Good daily specials provide variety on a menu with a plethora of tasty options
So good! Fast friendly service and the pork buns were crazy good!
So so good. Get the red curry chicken! The dipping sauce is amazing.
Really good and comfortable place to dine at. Dumpling were really good. Good selection of beer and other drinks . Would definitely recommend to friends and family!
I used to love this place for the big fluffy perfect baozi the place is named for, which they apparently no longer have according to the bartender, kinda takes the shine off the apple
Great food. Authentic tastes. Excellent beer and drinks menu. And gourmet tea.
Go, go now, go often and then go again. Love this place. Asian slaw and all the dumplings are tremendous.
Food was so delicious. Exactly what you want. Service great too. Good suggestions.
Highly recommend! Many choices to choose from with the buffet carts offered on Sundays. Excellent food and service. Cozy atmosphere.
Never been waiting for my order more than 40 minutes. Had to leave hungry and disappointed. The waiter didn't apologize for messing up and was explaining that dumplings takes 15 min to cook. She said it few times actually...the boiling point was the table next to us who came and ordered later got their dumplings first. Bottom line don't hire arrogant waiters.
Excellent food & good cocktail happy hour specials. I loved the shao mai and lotus-wrapped rice. Service was kinda poor for a slow afternoon, but perhaps the bartendress thought a solo traveler wanted to be left alone. I’m guessing that’s why she never checked if the food was okay or noticed me loudly slurping bc my drink was empty. Ah well. Thankfully, the food was extremely tasty.
A great place to go and have some killer dumplings and other treats. We have been several times and we will continue to be dinners for years to come. They have some interesting beers and tasty specialty drinks to compliment your food choices. You can have spicy or more mild depending on your palate. But for sure a place not to be missed!!!
My favorite place in Portland. I love the Kung Pao chicken dumplings. And the shrimp and bacon dumplings. And they are half off late night! The service is always great and the atmosphere cozy.
One word: overpriced. Three words: fancy and overpriced. After I ate two dishes and two appetizers, I don't feel like I have ate anything. And more importantly-- as a northeastern Chinese, their dumplings and baos are definitely not authentic. Service and atmosphere is good though. Two stars are for them.
Great food and friendly service. Only negative was the small dining area and table not really big enough for all the food we ordered.
Wonderful. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The service was great, the waitstaff was very knowledgeable in regards to both menu items and specials. I plan on eating somewhat regularly.
Amazing dumpling, smashed cucumber, and Asian slaw and the bartender was great.
I loved the food, and thought the pricing was fine for the food, but I took off one star because I felt like charging 3 bucks each for little tiny drinks (6 oz?) was unnecessary (lemonade and iced tea-- not fancy drinks). The food flavors were great, and we really enjoyed it.
Great value...great service... great food.
Delicious food, attentive staff, and extremely welcoming to families/young children.
The prices for take out are really good. The dumplings are amazing. I haven't tried anything else but so good.
Excellent, friendly service in a funky atmosphere with Asian dragon art and photos of Beijing. The cold dishes are large, vegan, and tasty; the hot dishes are meat and just as tasty. Portions are a bit small for the price. Very good tea, free refill (hot water only). Local parking difficult, and the place is a bit hidden, but busy. Interesting cocktails, too.
My wife and I went to dinner before a concert. If you are a larger group, expect to wait for a table. They will take your phone number so you don't have to sit and wait. If you have one or two for dinner, there may be immediate room at the bar. The food was amazing with lots of flavor. Pick a couple dishes per person and share all with the party. My wife and I shared 3 dishes and had enough to eat and saved room for dessert. The dessert balls are golf ball size and and packed with flavors, like coconut and peanut butter. Not your traditional dessert, but try something different and you won't regret it. $1.58 each, so take one of each.
Unique restaurant. Great food. We got the lunch special which came with salad, dumplings and dessert dumplings. Would definitely go there again.
The food (dumplings) was unique and very tasty. The wait staff was friendly and helpful, explaining the differences and nuances of each dish. Loved the experience.
I wish I took some photos. Came here during the late lunch "happy hour" holy Lord! Ate so much I wanted to vomit and it was only $15. Half price dumplings for happy hour. Try everything. The bartender was very nice and as we talked he "tried out" a new cocktail and wanted my thoughts on taste. The food was amazing and came out quickly. Get the desert dumplings! Small resteraunt so expect to wait. I was lucky enough to get in before the 1/2 price rush. Def. Check it out if you're not a local.
Of course great dumplings. But also awesome pork and duck bunds, noodle dishes and dessert too
I mean where to start, staff friendly, beautiful dinning area homey feel. Best dumplings north of Chinatown in Boston. I'm a loyal customer now.
Great dumplings! Get in line, you will not regret the wait.
Awesome dumplings!
The Sunday dim sum brunch was fabulous and totally worth it. I loved the fusion dishes they had to offer, and the carts was a fun touch that hearkened back to my childhood at traditional dim sum places. We ordered a soba noodle dish, pork belly buns, a fried chicken thigh bun, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, and shu mai. It was all very tasty and some of the fusion dishes were very unique! The sticky rice in particular came with pork belly and a salsa verde that I thought brightened and accented the dish perfectly. I also loved the fried chicken thigh bun, which was a limited offer for that day. I left feeling super full and happy. Definitely a unique place that I would go to again.
Always a great place to get dinner. Friendly service and the best dumplings in town!
My favorite place! If we are in, or anywhere near, Portland I always make my husband stop so I can get some of the Kung pao dumplings!
Super yummy and authentic dumplings. The staff could be a bit friendlier but they were slammed and the was a long wait. If you’re prone to being chill, definitely bring a sweater. The AC is pumping. Small mixed drinks though.
We went to this place several times for their lunch special. The food and beer selection is awesome. I wish this place was around the corner from my house.
They no longer have ma po tofu on the menu, break my heart!
Great Dumplings!!! Cute place Friendly staff.
Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. Service was warm. They were out of the two items that I ordered, which I wish I had known before I selected from the fairly limited lunch menu. The food was so good though.
Had their Sunday Brunch. It was exquisite! Choices from both the dim sum cart and kitchen coupled with a nice array of craft beers and sake. A small, comfortable dining space and cool bar as well.
Top notch dumplings and local brews.
Great atmosphere, great service, great dumplings & cocktails!
Neat atmosphere, good service. The dumplings were great.
Absolutely delicious. Wasn't one bad dish during dim sum brunch. Highly recommend!
Excellent dumplings, interior design, and Prosecco on tap!
Dumplings are life
A great tasting and surprising assortment of wonderful dumplings.
Great small plate options. I am never disappointed with the food, and they love exposing folks to the joys of good sake.
This place was SO TASTY. Everything we got was exceptional. Its cool to have a tasting style like this, it is a little pricy but thats not out of the ordinary for this area. Waitress was really good at her job. Will be dreaming about the dumplings tonight
These dumplings knocked me out. The service was quick, the recommendations, spot on, and the atmosphere was fun, modern, and yet not too noisy. Especially worthy of encomium-- the cold noodles, The Chrysanthemum tea, the chicken curry dumpling, the sticky rice, and the cucumber salad!
This place is unbelievable. The pork dumplings and bulgogi are amazing! Smashed cucumber and the somen noodles are also fantastic!
Ok. Nothing outstanding. Service slow and not well informed about menu and specials. Goofed up take out order.
Fun environment, good food, and quick service
I have literally nothing bad to say about this place. The foods incredible the atmosphere is awesome. Check it out for sure.
Bao Bao is great for amazing dumplings and delicious sake. Fantastic, friendly atmosphere and one of the only places in Portland with an accessible bar. Highly recommend a visit :)
Had a great solo visit for lunch. Food was amazing, prices decent. The only thing I thought was a bit too over priced was a bottle of ginger beer. $4 is just too high. But next time I'll just not get it.
We decided to give this place a try as we are fans of Tao and we were not disappointed. We tried 5 different items and everything we had was very tasty. My wife had a deink as well and enjoyed it. Service was very friendly. We definitely would recommend it and hope to make a trip in again.
I have some problems with this place. We got seated without a wait at 1pm on a Sunday, and they explained to us that their Dim Sum went until 3. Without even pausing to ask us if we knew what Dim Sum is, our waitress gave a very bad explanation of what it was and how it worked, which just seemed kinda tone deaf to us. We ordered some tea right away, which to be fair was pretty good. We waited a good 10-15 minutes before the waitress came by again, but still no cart. When it finally came by, the selection was definitely not typical Dim Sum fare. We asked about pork buns because they were on the menu, and didn't see any. We were told they didn't have any, which was hard to believe because their "brunch" was only halfway over and the name of their restaurant is "Bao Bao" house. We asked about soup dumplings, again because the word dumpling is in their name, and our waitress didn't even know what they were. We did have one plate of their Shumai and it was ok. Needless to say I would not advise going here. I have no issues with the fusion menu at all but the poor service, outrageous prices, and lackluster food make for a pretty sour experience.
A bit pricy for the amount you get
The Bulgogi Beef dumplings blow my mind. They are so rich, well spiced, and just generally delightful.
An absolute treat. Great place to go with a large group. Great beer list, and the "asian slaw" is the best!!
Super overpriced. Not authentic. 2 bites of noodle for 10 dollars...really? Not impressed by this place and the portions are way to small. The next day I went to sedago brewing company and had dinner there...it was a hamburger place but ironically the dumpling appetizers were better than this place. [And that's coming from a Chinese dude from LA!] P.S. and i thought lobster rolls were pricey...this blows that out of the water
It's excellent. I wish they had a little larger selection of vegetarian options so I could go more often
Wonderful place for casual Asian fare! Love the slaw, and it's always hard to choose which dumplings.
Soooooo goood.
So many delicious menu items. Range from spicy Savory sweet and Umami flavors. You can't go wrong there are so many options to meet everyone's needs and desires.
Absolutely the worst experience ever. Came in to a half full restaurant (4 tables open plus one for a large party). A party of two at a four top saw us and moved to a two top so we could be seated. Another waitress saw this and said there might be another party of four waiting so the hostess went to check. 15 minutes later another server (male) came up and said they couldn't seat us, it would be 30 minutes at least. We asked if we could sit at two 2 tops, and he said no because it would be too crowded. We left and another party of three walked in after. They we're immediately seated at the two tables we asked about. Apparently there was something about us that they didn't like.
Manger is so mean
Incredible food. The slaw!! The noodles!! Can’t wait to come back
Favorite dumplings and one of the best meals in Portland. Cold dishes are incredible too. I could eat the smashed cucumbers every day. Try every dumpling! Their lunch special is tops and in general it's a pretty affordable meal. Service is always great and the room is comfy. Fun for a small group too!
I will never refuse an invitation to Bao Bao! The Bulgogi Dumplings and the Asian Slaw are by far the best plates on the menu. I recommend going with a group of friends and ordering almost everything, you won't regret it. It's mostly small plates and they are perfect for sharing.
Very good dumplings and service
So yummy here
Dumpling are fantastic. Will be going again soon. Cole made a few excellent cocktails.
This is the best place to get dumplings in Portland. Great tap list and cocktails. The menu is delicious and balanced between cold dishes, hot dishes, and dumplings.
We sat at the bar. Everything we had was excellent from food to drinks. Highly recommend the Asian slaw, Sheng Jian Bao, smashed cucumbers, and the Dust Yourself off and Chai again. We also found the prices very reasonable. Can't wait to come back!
Moderate volume, attentive service. Great food, great drinks. A fantastic date in Portland.
I was with a large group and the staff were incredibly gracious and helpful. The bao were delicious, the drinks list was fantastic, the place was comfortable.. what's not to like?
Awesome dumpling selection and good cocktails. Service was fine. Didn't love the steamed egg, spinach, mushroom dumplings. Mostly spinach, too green for me. Music was odd, and general acoustics not good, a bit loud. All around I would go here again for the food and value.
Food is very yummy and fairly priced. The waitress was extremely helpful and patient with our big group of people and we would come here again! Highly recommend this place!
My server/ bartender was great. Food hot and tasty! Dumplings we're half off which is great.
Their Dumplings are delicious!!
Bao Bao is scrumptious! Steak and cheese dumplings are great! Asian slaw is fantastic. You can go wrong with anything on the men menu. We order multiple and have fun sampling!
Small cozy place. Always a great rotating menu of delicious steamed and fried dumplings. Good beer selection, and an eclectic mix of staff. I like their policy of no tips: a liveable wage for their staff is built into the menu pricing.
Delicious small plates. The Lo Mai Gai and red curry chicken dumplings were especially tasty.
Cute place, but is very cramped and loud. It's very hard to find a parking spot. It costs us $40 to get 4 plates of dumplings (24 in all). I wouldn't recommend shao mai. I would go again if it wasn't an hour and a half away from me.
The food was good. The service was lacking. It was not very crowded when I went, but it seemed to take the waiter forever to give us menus, take our orders, and bring our drinks.
We went to alot of places in Portland including Scales. This place is on par with Scales. Easily one of my favorite places and very good strong drinks.
Gun cocktails!!
great music/atmosphere. good food. good tea. not the cheapest but worth the splurge in my opinion!
Great dumplings!
Fun food and atmosphere. Welcomed us at an odd time (around 2:30p).
Great food. A few things really brought us back to our time in China and that does not happen often. Thanks for a wonderful night
Best Dumplings in town, quick easy bite. I would recommend any day, service is phenomenal. Drinks are at its best and there is nothing this place lacks.
Delicious food & drink. Great ambience.
It is especially delicious. The service was great, ambiance very pleasant, choices abundant, and variety of taste's really nice.
Such good dumplings, one of my favorite meals in Portland!
Great ambiance. Well prepared food.
Even if we have dinner reservations somewhere else, my wife and I have stopped in for some dumplings for pre-dinner just because they are so good. A medium sized restaurant with delicious offerings and tasty drinks.
Killer food, great service, get in if you're able they're rightfully busy
Excellent dumplings and drinks, all very reasonably priced. This is a great place for dumplings.
Dumplings for days. Bulgoki and Kung Pao Chicken dumplings ftw. Gochujang mayo was
Amazing food at very reasonable prices. Each dish is meant to be 2 servings, so everyone can order what they want and share! Delicious!
Great service, food and drinks! Will definitely return
Went for a special event. I really like the space but didn't try any of Bao Baos offerings for food
Beef Bulgogi was delicious. Kung Pao were a little bland, although dipping them in soy sauce and rice vinegar made them yummy. The sesame dessert balls were a nice treat at the end of our meal.
Hake dumplings were probably the best and most "worth it" dumpling on the menu. Interesting Asian-inspired menu but falls short of being anything close to an authentic dumpling house. This restaurant serves more of a modern Asian fusion fare and for that reason, prices are elevated. Service was excellent.
Good atmosphere, great service. I wasn't crazy about the food -- after a few different dumplings I couldn't eat much more, we ended up giving our leftovers to friends who were more enthusiastic.
SO GOOD. Get the cucumber side dish. Order a bunch of things to share. Excellent beer selections. Good service.
Delicious dumplings and really friendly staff! I would recommend having the pork bun and absolutely get the pork belly ramen if they have it, the flavor was amazing!
Great shu mai, shen shen bao, and decent Kung Pao chicken dumplings. The Kung Pao Chicken dumplings are a bit weird with the peanuts - would love the option of not having them in there. Otherwise, it is an interesting experience here where the staff are friendly, the bar is plentiful, and the portions are quite reasonable. Expect to spend $20pp without drinks to get full. They were generous in giving us one extra shen shen bao because they had to cook another 2.
The chicken and red curry dumplings were tasty, but definitely needed a bit more spice. Fortunately, the house-made chili oil did the trick. The lo mai gai was absolutely the best thing on the menu. The glutinous rice was combined with roasted pork and chestnuts, then steamed in a lotus leaf. The leaf gave the rice some slightly floral tones, which were complemented nicely by the savory and slightly sweet pork. The service was exceptional, and our server Raven made sure to answer questions and explain highlights of each dish. Her drink recommendation was spot on. The prices might be a bit high on some items, but overall this was a treat.
Oh I WANTED to love this place. I loved the IDEA of this place... but the overall experience fell flat. (And I had been on such a roll picking stellar places - boo.) So hubby, kiddo and I were running down to Portland to run an errand and decided to stop here. We lucked out and snagged a table before rush hour and the waitress was very friendly. We heard about the process and placed our order and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, when another table that came in and ordered after us received their food, our waitress appeared and apologized and said she put our order in behind another table and it was going to just be a bit longer. It took almost a full hour to get a plate of coleslaw and 6 dumplings so while that definitely plays into my 2-star rating (service is such a huge part of the dining experience), the flavors are really what drove it down. We tried the coleslaw and it was just ok - I've had almost identical coleslaws in other Asian restaurants and this one was just nothing special. I wasn't super hungry so I only wanted to try one type of dumpling and instead of going traditional with pork and cabbage so I went with what the waitress recommended: lamb, black bean chili and spices. I was concerned about the flavor profile but she assured me the beans weren't really like chili, just the spices of chili. I went ahead and decided to try it, which I almost immediately regretted. I think it was just trying too hard - there were too many things happening in the dumpling between the Mediterranean lamb flavor, the Tex-Mex bean flavor and then the dumpling texture... it was just gross. I had 2 and then decided to just stop. The waitress asked about bagging up the leftovers and I said sure, but by the time she brought them back, I thought better of it and just left them on the table... Sadly I'm considering this a strike-out and I really have no desire to return there before we move from the area. #wompwomp
Happy hour and half Price dumplings are where it's at.
Wonderful! Everything was tasty and service was great! We had a variety of dumplings and drinks. Obviously not gluten free friendly though, as we discovered. Recommend!
Great place! The layout is elegant, clean and simple! The food is outstanding and the layout is perfectly made for conversation. Top notch!
Bao Bao is one of my favorite places in Portland! You will regularly find us at there half off dumpling times Wednesday through Friday from 2-4PM. Aside from the kong poa dumpling, I would highly recommend their Asian slaw. Super nice staff, great prices, and terrific local beer selection.
Loved it! Very delicious, service, casual atmosphere. Perfect little Chinese restaurant! Also very affordable!
My wife and I really wanted to like this place more than we did. We love Asian food, especially dumplings, but we were a bit let down. We sat at the bar with an extremely friendly and fun bartender. Getting the food out was very slow, when it did come out, we were a bit disappointed. The dumplings were rather bland, the somen noodles were ok, the smashed cucumbers were good. Not a place I would rush back to.
Good food, good service, nice ambiance. Went for the lunch special which was not at all described online so we weren't sure what to expect. You can get a cold dish, dumplings, and a dessert item for $13.88. The portions aren't that large which was fine for me but if you're a hearty eater you may want to order an additional item from the menu. The slaw and smashed cucumbers were really good, dumplings were good too I just wish they had more vegetarian choices (there's only one). Thanks for reading!
