Not sure what happened this time. Our waitress was probably the rudest person I’ve ever met in my life. We were seated and it took over 20 minutes for us to even get our drink order filled. Then our waitress continuously disappeared on us which was honestly better than when she was at our table because she LITERALLY threw our stuff at us. We asked for straws and she pulls them out of her belt and throws them at us and huffs and walks away. Then when she brings our food (which took FOREVER, she then throws our silverware at us. Very very disappointed in this place. We are visitors from out of state and came here upon others suggestions and this is how we are treated. I’m absolutely appalled by this level of service. If you’re from out of town, you are best to avoid this place. They hate people from out of town and will completely disrespect you the entire time you are here. This lady had the nerve to act this way in front of a toddler who was literally just sitting there with us trying to eat and she is going to throw things at us? I don’t think so!! The restaurant did not even offer a discount or anything at all. They still expected us to pay full price for everything which we reluctantly did to avoid a further scene. I did not even get to enjoy my food or anything.

I tried this place out with my best friend, it was our first time going and we were immediately impressed with how homey and comfortable the place was. The staff was friendly and even gave out a few compliments, even the other guests were friendly asking us how we were when we sat down at a table not far from them. The food was delicious, I definitely recommend if you're from out of town and looking for that Southern feel.

Excellent place for a staff meeting. It has a room towards the back of the restaurant you can rent for $50. We have used this room for a couple of years for our Christmas party. It is one of the only places in Owensboro that holds us all. The food is great and they have a couple of workers that will take your order and make sure you have a great experience. When you have a large party they charge you a 20% gratuity.

Pleasant staff and environment but food is mediocre. The ribs were kinda tough, fries bland and typical, slaw was fresh. Very similar to diner food. Just okay in my opinion. Husband loved the turkey. Sauces are thin and watery....thats how they make them. Chicken looked good, wish I'd've ordered that.

We bought chopped mutton to go even though they offer a very nice dining room for dining. They serve the original vinegar based sauce which isn't what I was raised on but is good just the same. People come from far and wide to taste the offerings at Old Hickory BBQ!

If you are passing through Owensboro and needing a bite to eat, I highly recommend Old Hickory Bar-B-Q. There service was great and the BBQ was amazing. Great portions and a good price. We didn't get any desert but cobblers were flying past us the whole time so clearly popular. They looked great. I'll be back for sure on my next visit.

My family and I decided to eat here after reading the reviews. The food was mediocre at best. I had the chicken, my husband had the 3 piece sampler (mutton, barbecue, and ham), & my daughter had a cheeseburger. My chicken was dry with such an overwhelming fake smoke flavor that I tasted it for hours afterward, the mashed potatoes were the instant red potato type, the bread was just loaf bread, a pile of dill pickles, baked beans straight out of the can (warmed), and a huge slice of white onion. The cheeseburger was a simple from the (frozen) box variety. My husband's mutton was probably the best thing we were served. Just go to the grocery store get a pork loin to go in the crockpot, a can of beans, a jar of pickles, an onion, a loaf of bread, and some instant mashed potatoes.

What can I say about Old Hickory that I haven't said many times before. This place is as good as it gets. I moved away from Owensboro many years ago but when I visit this place is my priority. For those who have never tried mutton, do it here. The chicken is also an absolute delight. Eat at this place. Just do it.

I have always heard great things about Old Hickory, but finally went in for my own the other day. I ordered a half pound of pulled pork, but had to find my own silverware after being served my plate. The slaw was refrigerated, but didn't seem remarkably fresh. It was soggy, and didn't have the crisp flavor I prefer. As for the pulled pork, I must have misinterpreted my options- I should have asked for the dry option and added my own sauces as they completely flooded the tray with their very watery signature sauce. It was vinegar-y, and far too wet. Their were pieces of pork that were too fat to be eaten, and had to be set aside. Overall, not at all the legendary meal I'd expected. I am open to try again, as the atmosphere was very open and inviting and the staff seemed professional and courteous.

Best barbeque restaurant in town. If you are looking for quantity, there's no buffet but the dinner plate meals are generous. Arguably Moonlite's side dishes are better but Old Hickory has the best barbeque- the chicken is flavorful but not too smoky, the chopped mutton is nice and tangy, and the burgoo is consistent and not overwhelmingly vinegar/tomato tasting. Restaurant is cozy but has a room for larger groups. The space is nice and was updated and expanded a few years ago but it is a home-style, Ownesboro no frills barbeque joint- if you're from out of town dont expect some Food Network road show new-age stainless spaceship run by a guy with bacon tattoos.

I’m not that big a fan of barbecue, the only barbecue I really like is mutton. The sliced mutton here is some of the best you’ll have. I also really like their Burgoo. They have pork barbecue here as well, if you don’t like mutton. If your in town you should definitely try this place.

Expected more, I guess. Not a fan. We ordered the 3 meat plate with slaw and fries. Onion slice and dill pickles came on the side. Meat was tender, but had to ask which meat was which. We added no sauce so could taste the meat. Mutton, pork, and beef literally all tasted the same...and we eat a lot of BBQ... but the meats' flavor was not there. Slaw was very finely ground. Fries were good. Two slices of bread that was either stale or dry homemade. Coconut pie was not homemade...seemed recently thawed. Had to ask for more tea. Friendly wait staff, at least.

Great bar b que. I had never eaten here so it was a first. Very friendly staff. Good food. My fries and baked beans were very run of the mill. The meats were quite good. They kept bringing us silverware rolled in napkins but they were just knives. No forks rolled into them. That was odd. The waitress got us two forks.

Contrary to the last review advising our of towners to steer clear, I'm from Memphis (a town that thoroughly knows a thing or two about bbq) and we loved it here. The service was good and the mutton was better. We tried Moonlite the last time we were in OBKY and I definitely prefer the more intimate feel of Old Hickory. Mutton is totally a unique meat that you're not going to find anywhere else, but if there are any out of towners on the fence about it, try it and try it here. Good job, guys!

Everything tasted and looked like it came out of a can, no doctoring up either. Mac and cheese and coleslaw was sub par at best. Baked beans and fries were ok. Old Hickory Bar-B-Q is not an all-you-can-eat restaurant, but if you like some variety, you can order their combination plate, which lets you to choose any three meats, plus two sides. I highly recommend the beef (brisket) and the mutton ribs, which are gamier and more flavourful than the chopped mutton meat. The sides were also well-done, and I especially enjoyed the creamy mac and cheese. To finish off a great meal, I recommend their homemade banana pudding, which is the perfect combination of whipped cream, banana pudding, bananas, and soft cake. If you're stuffed, you can always take it to go!

Everything, from the food to the staff had a lot of room for improvement. It was not busy however we waited almost 10 minutes just to be seated. When the hostess came up front, all she said was "two". Not a question, or greeting, just a statement. We were seated and had to wait almost 10 minutes before we even ordered drinks. The food left a lot to be desired. Everything was dry and overcooked. The waitress only came back once to offer refills, and then gave us our check without asking if we'd wanted dessert. This is our second time and I don't think we'll be back for a third.

Old Hickory is the REAL king of Owensboro BBQ. That "other" place can advertise all they want for their overpriced buffet, but when it comes to flavor and value, Old Hickory is hands down the best around. The ribs, pork, mutton, and chicken are all delicious, and the burgoo is great as, as well. They top it all off with a variety of great desserts and top-notch service. I've traveled to and worked in 30 plus states, and still haven't found a place that beats Old Hickory.

My family and I stopped here as we live about an hour away. I am a huge barbecue fan, so my family will indulge me by going to special places I select once in a while. We walked in and stood for 15 mins or so while the girl at the desk ignored us and the waitresses walked around us. Eventually we were seated in a very rickety booth and table that shook side to side when you touched it. The place smelled of barbecue pits, which made me drool but the waitress quickly squashed that as we had silverware tossed onto the table. They were busy but that's no excuse. She took our drink order and promptly returned with all of them which she sat in the middle of the table forgetting completely of who ordered what. I should say at this point that my oldest daughter and I were dead set on ordering mutton ribs because neither of us had ever tried them. My oldest was up first to place her order. As soon as she said mutton ribs, the waitress immediately told her that she shouldn't order that because mutton ribs were all fat and gristle and tasted awful. Well that changed my order too and was very disappointing. My daughter quickly scrambled to order the smoked turkey plate with a side of coleslaw and mashed potatoes. My youngest ordered a catfish sandwich with fries, my wife ordered the special of sweet, heat, pulled, chicken sandwich with onion rings while I ordered the only thing I could eat without too much trouble... catfish plate with fries and a side salad. The side salad came right away and was in a tiny little applesauce bowl but so heaping with lettuce, tomato and cheese that I had to put my packaged blue cheese dressing on in stages. No even so much as a 6" salad bowl. Our waitress came by several times for refills and to tell us our order was on it's way 3 times. Finally, the food came and at an average time. Everything was hot and a decent portion of each. One thing I noticed right away was that the onion rings, fries and fish were all prepackaged and frozen prior to frying. the catfish was actually swai fish which is a Japanese fish and pretty commonly found in most places that sell frozen fish. My wife loved her sandwich and onion rings. My oldest liked her smoked turkey which appeared to be one of only 2 things made in house on the table. The mashed potatoes may have been but not the gravy. Back in my home town, we had a chain of "barbecue" places called Triple E. This place was about as authentic as that. If by tradition, they mean traditionally frozen, prepackaged and just put out smoked meats, then they are as traditional as any other place who gets most of their food off a GFS truck with little to no effort by staff to make things from scratch. I scrapped the idea of getting a desert by the fact that if everything else was made from an outside factory, the deserts would most certainly be the same. If I had a place like this, my first thing would be to scrap the overcooked, soft and mushy foods for real homemade. Many of the older generation that frequents these places like to thing on all their plates and that is soft and mushy food that is easy to chew and doesn't upset their colon. Easy in and easy out. That's not for me and paying $50 for food that cost and estimated total of $5 is not my idea of a good evening. Fortunately, we went to Lic's Ice Cream afterwords and that made the night bearable. Later, I felt sick and it wasn't the child size ice cream cone I had. Overall, I'd say pass this place up and go somewhere you can be sure the food is actually prepared by people who answer to someone who cares what they serve. You can get this anywhere GFS services. Oh and tarter sauce shouldn't be in a Kraft peel and dip container at a sit down restaurant. If you are beyond your 40's, you make like it and go here often. If you are not an AARP member, find another option because you won't get anything better than McDonald's or Burger King here.

Unbelievable and unique barbecue in a friendly setting. You literally walk by the smokehouse as you head in, and they cut the meat right off the barbecue pits. Amazing blueberry cobbler for dessert!!! 10/10 perfect experience.

Fairly good spot, real smokey flavor and large portions. A little pricey when you consider Moonlight's scrumptious buffet is a few miles away. And don't get the catfish. Remember, this is a BBQ joint. The catfish fillets are paper thin; you get plenty of fried breading around those minnows, however, if that's your thing!
