REVIEWS OF Al's Chickenette IN Kansas

Lance V

If you want good homestyle chicken, this is the place to go in hays. They have a cool history and still family owned.

Cheri Kennedy

Loved this place! Good food, clean, and great service!!!

Christy Reust

Place was friendly and inviting but eight people out of our party at 15 ended up sick after meal there the chicken livers and gizzards appetizers were so tough you could not chew them the catfish dinner was not done the fish was actually still thinking real looking in the middle. The waitress or sell was amazing but we did not receive any discounts on quality of food

Brian Trimmell

Disappointed. One of the other reviews talk about it not being the same. Love the waitress. She was very pleasant.

Nathan Underwood

Our food was delicious and they prepared it super fast. The fried chicken was the best I've had this side of Georgia. Would eat here again!

Dee Just Me

Al's has been around my whole life. I had not been there for years, since I was a child with my grandparents. My husband and I was in Hays so we decided to eat there. I was disappointed. The food had so much black pepper in it that I couldn't eat it. I love food that has flavor and Spice, but this was pure black pepper. The mashed potato was a cold baked potatoes smashed up with gravy on it.

Lance Foss

OMG. You’ve driven 150 miles (at least). You get off of 70. You have got to go 2 more miles! Skip the chains. By far the best chicken fried steak I have ever had. The meat thick, tender, and perfectly cooked. Real mashed potatoes, and terrific gravy. Can’t say enough about our server Kate. It will be our go to place when going from KC to Colorado.

Brian Petersen

Worth the drive off the interstate. We wanted good home cooked food. The chicken fried steak was amazing decent prices and fair portions and friendly service. If I'm ever in Hays KS again I will go back.

Debra Dunlap

Unbelievable chicken!!!!! So goood!! Looks like a hole-in-the-wall, but oh is the food amazing. So worth the trip off the Interstate. It should be listed in travel magazines. We were there at 2:30pm, and it got busy! I will stop next time I go through Hays, KS.

Android Orangutan

This is a five-star restaurant by my opinion. Good old-fashioned (My mother's type of cooking). People have come from far an wide to come eat at this restaurant. You'll find good fried chicken mashed potatoes gravy some of the best food you can eat in one place.

Peter Montalvo

This place has some great chicken fried chicken for sure. The chicken was a quality piece of meat. Breaded just right. Definitely get some of that when you go. Corn was pretty good as well as the gravy and fries The outside of the place does not do the inside justice. It looks pretty run down from the outside but the inside is just fine. It’s a casual but yummy eat for a good price. The service was great! Very welcoming!

William Heyer

Best fried chicken ever! And exactly halfway between Seattle and Boston...fun fact!

Kay Andrea

Our server was great. Enjoyed homemade chicken noodle soup and salad with homemade dressings along with our delicious fried chicken.

Scott Lakeside

Great old-school diner! The chicken-fried steak was delicious. The lettuce in the salad was a little past its prime but nothing that kept me from eating it, and the homemade bleu cheese dressing was very good. If you're looking for gourmet, this isn't your place. But if you want comfort food and some great service, this is for you.

Tracy Porter

Hands down best chicken ever! Will be making this stop again. And again and again!

Paul Brungardt

Great fried chicken. Great local joint.

John T Friel lll

The food was very good at this place.

LP

A short jaunt from the interstate, but totally worth the side trip. Another simple delicious meal at Al's. Third time I have reviewed them as we drive cross country, each time I am glad I stopped. This is a taste of local flavor. Each meal starts with warm buttered rolls. Salad is crisp and served in chilled plates Chicken fried steak, so light it hovers above the plate. Juicy, tender, delicious fried chicken. Be sure to ask about the daily pie choices, and don't miss the wonderful ice cream. Service was fast and friendly

Megan Bair

Amazing fried chicken & chicken tenders! Mashed potatoes with REAL gravy. The coleslaw was a little too sweet for my liking, but we all have different views about that. 10/10 will def come back on another trip.

Glenda Craven

Everything was good. However the chicken tasted chemical like.

Todd Sandoval

Been coming to Al's for the last 25 years. The chicken fried steak is as good as ever. Rolls with honey. Fries are amazing. Absolutely stop and enjoy some fried chicken and other awesome flavors that reminds you of home cooking!

Tim Judy

Great chicken in a country setting

Juan Valdez

How are you going to have a chicken restaurant and run out of chicken. Stopped here because we heard it was good. We all ordered 2 piece dinners all dark meat. About 15 minutes later the server tells us they ran out. Needless to say we left

Gerhard van Tonder

Great chicken!

Daniel DeGroot

Everything is homemade. Nothing came from a powder or a freezer bag. They also put pepper in their green beans and mashed potatoes just like I grew up with. The I've cream is also homemade and delicious. The server was very good.

Alicia Shelton

Traveling through and found the reviews for this restaurant on Google. Reviews looked good so decided to take the very slight detour from the interstate. The food was amazing, flavorful and satisfying. The staff was friendly. Would definitely stop here again.

Nicole Birkes

Excellent home cooked food, including homemade ice cream! Super friendly service & great prices in an inviting atmosphere.

Sue Ann Stutheit

Al's is always a favorite when in Hays! Their food is always fresh and the service is excellent! Come hungry!

Stephen LaChance

Service and food were very good, will come back

Shon Mathwich

Delicious chicken and friendly service

Robin Reece

Good fried chicken, black pepper gravy... Everything tasted fresh, but hard to eat a meal with mildew, dirty mop smell thruout diner. Left table a couple of times to step outside for fresh air.

Mona Contreras

Food had no flavor, NONE! Very nice staff though.

Cynthia Huebert

Excellent food and friendly staff!

Pam Bailey

We detour out of our way to have lunch here on our migration north for the summer. DELICIOUS

Katie Yeager

Ate there once and loved it. Twice we have been driving through Kansas and planned to stop. The restaurant was closed on both occasions: Once for a kitchen remodel and once for a cooler repair. Both instances were during the first week of July. Seemed like a strange coincidence, and nothing was posted online. We won’t be back.

Jack Anderson

Still the best chicken fried steak in Kansas. Nice people, good food.

Daniel Zangari

Went during a road trip, and every Cop, Firefighter, EMT and public employee in the tiny town was parked in lot. Figured its gotta be good...and it was.

David Hower

Chicken very good, very moist. Gravy taste good and I loved the chicken livers too. Nice staff and atmosphere. Not much on menu but food was good.

Valerie Fischer

Chicken was great and the pieces were big! The mashed potatoes were extra good too. I recommend this place if you are going through Hays and are needing a good tasty meal.

J S

I went and the website said they were open till 9 pm they were closed . So I don't like the mis information .

Jeanne Sleik

Guess we stopped in at a bad time. Had to ask for rolls and was given only two very small ones then had to ask for butter (for the two of us). The chicken fry’s were deep fried very quickly in old oil in a very hot temp so they were not done and impossible to chew. Had to ask for extra gravy because there was very little on the plate and the portion size of everything was very small. We were the only customers there!

Adam LaGrange

We wanted something different that wasn't fast food and found this place. So glad we did! The chicken fried steak and homemade fries were delicious, our server Elisha was really nice and even gave us drinks for the road when we told her we were heading back to Colorado. Don't know when I'll be in Hays Kansas again but when I am I'll definitely be stopping at Al's again.

Dell Orozco

Not bad, chicken was very moist and seasoned well. The gravy was over seasoned, but I'm pretty sure it was homemade. The salad was fresh and the service was fast.

XD Clan

Waited for over an hour for our dinner then another 25 minutes for our salads after asking for them twice. The mashed potatoes were cold, the gravy was crusted over & the salad tomato was rotten. Won't be back & will tell our friends. Should have gone to Wendy's!

Daniel Polasek

Excellent chicken and large portions.

Zach Day

Nothing like it used to be. Not for lack of effort though.

John Davis

Great food fresh hot and quick nothing processed here the French fries and the mashed potatoes were made fresh the chicken and cfs were great

John Barten

Great little chicken shack. Stop and eat something good instead of eating McDonald's in the car.

Charyl Mitchell

Fast, friendly service and AMAZING FOOD!!! The chicken was phenomenal.... and if you love sweet tea, make sure to grab a glass!! Highly recommended!!!

Laura DeHart

Delicious chicken, Green beans...yummy!

Michael Yoho

The little dinner is one of the few restaurants on the south end of town. I stopped in for dinner and had the chicken fried chicken. The chicken soup was extreme salty but the mashed potatoes were real and pretty good I just wished they had white gravy and add less salt to everything.

Seraphina Chang

It was delicious and the costume service was amazing I give it a 10 out of 10

Alane Maltese

We went so far out of our way to try Al's Chix.. we were not impressed and would not recommend nor would we go back again.

Jess P

The chicken was delicious. Service could have been better, it was very slow. I asked for warm pie but it was cold.

EA B

Holy fried chicken! House made dressings and sides, and there best fried chicken in Kansas. Also, terrific service. Just go already!

Richard Smith

Wow what a neat place. We were in our way home from Colorado Springs and happened on a sign. We checked it out and The food was awesome and the service was even better. Oliver was our waiter. He met us at the door and did a fantastic job. This is by far one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever been.

Christy Kearns

Al's has fabulous chicken, mashed potatoes (not disgusting instant) and real homemade gravy! I am never dissatisfied and never leave hungry! Occasionally they are a bit slow on the service side, but worth the wait.

Darlene

Great home-cooked chicken dinner! Very reasonable prices. Great home-town atmosphere and decor.

Travis Werth

Used to love going here but in the last year or so I've had nothing but horrible experiences. Place smells very strong of mold in booths by front windows. That night they ran out of gravy? Weird but stuff happens so no biggie but I notified the waitress of the strong mold smell. Came back over a month or 2 later and the mold smell was still so strong it almost ruined my appetite but we sat as far from the windows as possible. When we got our food the gravy was so full of pepper it looked burnt. I like pepper, but this was the first time I could say that my food had 3-4 times too much pepper for anyone. We overheard somebody a couple tables away complaining about it as well. Not what this place used to be!

jericha bequilla

If you’re on I70 and taking a break from your road trip and just wanting a really good meal, this one’s for you! They’ve got old diner’s cozy atmosphere, great and polite staff and (very) fast in putting on your drink refills! But most of all, very delicious chicken meals! One of the best chicken I’ve ever tasted.

Susan Davis

Sorry to see it closed & for sale. It has always served great home cooked style foods.

Brooke Schroer

I’m not sure why this has such a high rating. The service was good. But the food was not. Dry chicken, bland sides and the whole place smelled like sewer!

Linda S.

I’ve stopped by twice while driving cross county in need of a real meal for the family. They have been in business since the 1940s. I called ahead and ordered a family size chicken meal and picked it up within 20 mins. (A bit greasy but fried chicken usually is) Staff are always very nice. A bit expensive I thought (over $30).

HFD BFJ

Locals tradition for decades. Reminiscent of the days before the interstate existed. Worth the drive off the big road, "Old 40 Blue Star Highway".

roy mitchell

Every time I pass through Hays Kansas around Meal Time I make it a point to stop by this restaurant. Comfort food at its finest

john hirst

Great! Shared our meal since the 3 piece is filling! Travel to the far side of town.. worth the extra minute or two from I70. If you are in a hurry - call ahead. Chicken was cooked to perfection.

Charles Leaf

Home cooking at its finest. A little ways off the interstate but well worth the trouble. Friendly smiling faces, great service, clean bathrooms. Just like momma's. 9/10/2018, 3rd year to visit while passing through Kansas, never been disappointed. Best darn chicken, mash potatoes and gravy. Will be back again.

Donn Harrison

Nice little place! This beats any choices you have as you stop in Hays. We love the decor and the food. We had some AmAzInG chicken noodle soup. We’ll be back for sure!

Ed E

Crispy outside and moist inside. 5 stars for the food and their service. Location? A bit off from the interstate.

Lynnette Proffit

A great place for fried chicken! Almost as good as my mama's. Homemade pie and ice cream a great way to finish you meal.

CS Lofstrom

Great food as usual! Sunday after church was a little busy and the service was still good!

Angela Trapani

An anchore in the Hays community of local dining not to be missed ...

Adam Gillis

Chicken was marginal, mashed potatoes were rough and was a bit pricey..,,

Haines Eason

I am loath to review a spot already so well "documented," but I truly love this place and have eaten here several times. I'd wager I'd make a detour here anytime I'm within 100 miles. Just. Good. Chicken. Great service, too.

Coy Page

We stop here every time we drive from Denver to Wichita. One of our all time favorite restaurants! My picky little boy loves the chicken.

Mark Stein

I stopped by the restaurant to photograph the beautiful neon sign en-route to Colorado. I went inside, and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. I left with a souvenir glass and a delicious drumstick, and as a gift gave them a Polaroid photo of their iconic sign.

Ivy Henderson

Try the pie. I'm not joining its delightful, the sweet tea tastes like it was made by a southern belle and the chicken is out of this world. nice simple menus to go along with the nice simple people who run the show.

Tony Miller

It's apparently permanently closed. There's a For Sale sign in front. Bummer, it was my favorite place in Hays.

Beatrice Jacobs

Despite what others have written, I am a SALT~aholic! And having my meal come to me "lightly seasoned" is GREAT! They have their hearts in every meal! I absolutely highly recommend this Chickenette! ❤❤❤

Kevan Adams

Some of the best comfort food ever. Nice and clean and very Friendly staff!

Duncan G. Clark

Classic fried chicken. The sides were very good and portion size was large! Not going to walk away hungry!!

James Deane

Traveling with someone with food allergies, it is great to find places that can definitively say what offerings safe. Chickenette staff were responsive by phone and in person and took care of us completely. The food was extremely good, flavorful juicy chicken and great sides. Staff were attentive and the manager checked in with us. Worth a stop for a fantastic classic meal!

Ben Murray

Literally the best chicken place I've been to and I've been all over.

Gerry Kaslowski

Excellent. Stop here on our travels. Always good.

Andrea Kaz

GrEAT local place! We were driving thru while going cross country... found this little gem ... reasonable prices, good food and delicious homemade pie!! Server Hailey was very attentive and accomodating....

Drew Wasinger

Best fried chicken in town hands down. I don't eat anything but the chicken dinners so I can't speak to much else there.

Timothy Boyd

Good good, great service, and almost everything is made from scratch. I enjoy coming here. Friendly home style setting

shirley trent

Waited a long time for the food, service wasn't great and neither was the chicken. I won't go back.

Anne Fenske

Have loved this place over the years. What a disappointment tonight. Chicken was old. The chicken fried chicken was dark meat ( a first). No more homemade pies. Pie was heated twice and was still stone cold. The other pie was cold too but served with a soup of ice cream. Coffee barely lukewarm. Not coming back. Friendly young girl as waitress but not knowledgable.

Barbara Thomas

I was disappointed. The breading on the chicken tenders was heavy and the oil must have been old since it had an aftertaste. The cold slaw was too sweet and soupy. Actually, McDonalds buttermilk tenders are much better and lighter than these. I regret having gotten off my travel route to try this place.

Justin Lindsey

Some super good pan fried chicken, probably the best around. The mashed potatoes were great but the gravy has way too much pepper and they need to alter the recipe. The corn and fries were average. Service was OK but our server Nathaniel couldn't keep our drinks full while only serving two tables. To his credit the glasses have a below average size. Looks like they have a group private dining room but I'm not sure they are staffed to handle large groups so you better call for a reservation.

Jessica Barnett

Al's is the best fried chicken in Hays. It's crisp, flavorful, and juicy, plus it comes with awesome sides. The pie is great, too. Al's also has prompt service, friendly wait staff, and well-made food. If you're looking for great chicken, this is the place to go.

Jude Hessman

Best fried chicken

Bonnie Hamilton

Not as flavorful as some reviews indicated. Actually, the potatoes had zero salt. The chicken and gravy were good don't get me wrong. The livers were a bit overcooked but the ranch dressing made up for that. The cherry pie was yummy and my husband seemed to enjoy the ice cream. Elisha stole the show though. She is very cordial and attentive. The food was brought to the table fast and hot! My 4 star rating is mostly based on service and the experience of being taken back in time for brief moment as we sat with greasy hands listening to the local farmers carry on about the modern day struggle of farming. The experience was well worth the short jaunt from the freeway.

electro wasabi

Chicken was good but two of the pieces I got were undercooked. Not a fan the icecream but I loved the peach pie. Staff was very kind.

John J

What a classic! Super friendly staff, moist fried chicken breast and yummy sides.

Karen Copley

The best fried chicken I have ever eaten Home made mashed potatoes and homemade gravy, it just doesn't get any better! Erin was fabulous too!

brain child

We ordered 2 chicken fried chickens and 2 chicken fried steaks. Our steaks were very small. Approx 5 inches by 4 inches in size. They were very good but so small. The French fries were fabulous though!!

Kala Hillery

Wonderful chicken and noodle soup and fantastic staff I lost something out of my purse and called the next evening and they had kept it for me! What wonderful people

Kenda Falley

The chicken was pink and tasteless. The mashed potatoes and gravy were bitter and foul tasting. I enjoyed the roll and store bought honey out if all of it. Place is going downhill. Waitress agreed that they have had many complaints. Gee thanks for the heads up 55 Bucks later

Toby Gebheim

If you want home made cooking this is the place. OUTSTANDING

Yvonne Fisher

The mash potatoes and gravy was terrible. Undercooked chicken. But service was good.

H Valdez

I'd give less if I could. Stopped for some tasty fired chicken, but they were out of chicken.

Ephraim Benkendorf

Great food and service.

Matvey Vikhrov

Food was delicious. I recommend chili as a side.

Shane Warren

Solid fried Chicken, good slaw. Fries were just okay.

Marsha Kroonenberg

Average. Overpriced. Used to eat here in the 60's and 70's and again when the last owner had it. Fried chicken was dry. French fries were over-done. Coating on the chicken not as good. Used to get a towelette, now just napkins. Would suggest buying normal size chickens and lowering the price. Won't come back.

Jerri New

Excellent food, great service, will stop in again!!

Stephanie Santos

Mixed experience. The service, pie, and fried liver and gizzards were rather good. The fried chicken and mashed potatoes were under seasoned. Charming atmosphere.

Bill Williams

Good chicken

I've been to many places that claim to specialize in fried chicken. However, on a road trip you have to try local places so we took a chance on Al's. It's a bit of a drive from the interstate but hey, we had time. It was well worth the drive. Even though it doesn't look like much from the outside, and the small parking lot needs some serious work, I highly recommend you make the trip. They claim to make the food fresh in house, and it looks and tastes like it. The breading on the chicken was crisp and tasty, and the chicken itself had flavor. Too many times you get good breading but bland chicken or worse, bland breading and chicken. Not here. The pieces were good sized, too. I had the Big Al, a two piece dark meat meal, which comes with two sides. I was expecting at best a drumstick and wing, both scrawny. What I got was a drumstick and thigh, both good sized. With the mashed potatoes and gravy and corn, I was full. Of course, they have pie and there's always room for pie, especially home made pie. Get the triple berry pie warmed up. Trust me on this. Another pleasant surprise was their offering of one breast with two sides. Most places won't do that, and that's what my wife likes. So, happy wife. Another score! Jess, our server, put up with our questions with a smile and still provided great service. Then there's the interior. It's kitschy. It's old. They've been in the same building since 1949, after all. But it adds to the charm. When you combine it with the great food and great service, it's hands down one of the best places I've been to for fried chicken ever. Do yourself a favor. Check it out for yourself.

Avid Amateur

The food was marginal and the place smelled bad. French fries were cold and greasy. Wouldn't eat there again.

Granger Macy

Home cooking - seriously. Big birds, great crispy skin. Everything is made from scratch. The chicken soup and pie were great too. This is a one of a kind place. We'll worth driving out of you way for.

Jill Lurten

Tasted like Mama made it. Very friendly staff.

Patrick Morris

Delicious down home cooking!

Josh Herrman

Food is great. Staff is great. Strongly recommend

dwayne chew

Friendly service. Chicken was perfect. Good selection on the menu. Will definitely be going back.

Frank DeLeon

What the heck is a chickenette? Well it's where you get great fried chicken. The appetizer was livers and gizzards they were good too. Its been in business a long time for a reason . good food and lots of it along with friendly and fast service . If you like fried chicken you must stop in.
