Great BBQ. The reasoning for the 3 stars is mainly due to the lack of flexibility in their menu. They offer a "side" salad on the "soups & salads" section for $3.49. I often like to get the Dinner Platter which comes with 2 meats and 2 sides. Their list of sides are priced at $1.99, however a "side salad" is not an option. I asked to choose the side salad as one of my sides and that I would gladly pay the difference in price of $1.49 if it were a pricing issue. Still, I was told I cannot have that option and was given the list of side options that they have. Being a chef of over 10 years from Chicago, I know how important it is to 1. Make as much money as possible, and 2. Take care of each guest as best they can. Although the BBQ is great, I have always found that good food and great service are equally important when it comes to running a successful restaurant. Something so miniscule as not being able to order the "SIDE salad" as a side, even if it meant I wanted to give you more of my money, leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. Next time I'm craving BBQ, maybe I'll hesitate and browse other options.

A friend took me here once; fell in love instantly! Ain’t nothin’ fancy, that’s for sure. Not even big. But that doesn’t matter, when all you want is superb BBQ!!! And it’s here. Served just like the old days, and with great prices. Quick, easy and messy - yum! I have never cared for cornbread, but theirs.... just can’t get enough. This Pork Tenderloin sandwich from Smokey D's BBQ was worth every mile of the 349 miles it took me to ride there! It was excellent!! So tender, seasoned just right and an awesome crunch! The ribs were off the chain! Look at that smoke ring! The Owner Darren told me he uses apple wood to smoke these amazing ribs. Food was delicious and good portion size. Not quite as good as Mad Jack's in Cloudcroft, NM but a close second. Fast service. Only negative was the cleanliness of the dining area we were seated in. Three different wait staff wiped down tables but no one picked up the trash on the floor.

For anyone that hasn't been to smokey d's, you're missing out. Being from kc I love good bbq. This place would fit right in with Arthur Bryant's and Gates. The ribs are amazing. The brisket is incredible. These are things that have to be perfect to have a top notch bbq place. The sides are awesome. I especially recommend the jalapeno corn. To end your meal get the Apple dessert. Its big enough to share with someone. The service is always good and friendly. Food comes out fast. They have daily specials that include a drink. They have menu items for those that don't like bbq. They have a nice kids menu for those that like bbq or not so much. Prices are very fair for quality and quantity of food. Easy access off the freeway. Overflow parking across the street and some outdoor seating is also available. Oh and they have great beer selections and a bar if youre still not yet convinced. I have been a loyal customer since they opened and will be one for life. I take my visitors from kc there and they are always impressed. The food more than backs up the awards that decorate the restaurant.

Come here freuently. Burnt ends are amazing here. Tenderloin is huge (ask for two buns and split it with someone). Ribs are great. Smoked wings are good. I buy their rib rub and use it for all my smoking. Its amazing. If you are one of those jethros bbq people you will give it up once you come here. Who wants that liquid smoke crap when you can get the real deal here? When you arrive you go straight to the ordering counter then seat yourself and they will bring it out. Folding tables and chair mostly. They can accomodate large groups. They also have a bar at one end of their building. Parking is pretty scarce. Line is usually fairly long but it moves quickly so I wouldn't be deterred by it.

4 star review/5 star. Why? It's very good for barbecue. It does it pretty well. However, this is not the St Louis or Kansas City bang. This is the only reason. It does very well for Iowa barbecue and it very good as a quick getaway from work for lunch or a stop on a weekend. It's good for Iowa barbecue!

I liked the walk-up ordering and that was about it. Ordered the sampler plate. Brisket, ribs and pulled pork were very bland and dry. Sauces were all too sweet and didn't go well with the brisket at all. The sausage was pretty decent. Good amount of food for the money, but the feel was quantity over quality for sure. Unfortunately, would not recommend returning off of this one and only visit.

Hands down some of the best BBQ I have every had. They offer a great atmosphere here. The amount of awards this place has won is not surprising and extremely impressive. The owners have a passion in what they do and it definitely shows. Ordering usually does not take to long and you never have to wait to long for your food. I can not say enough good things about this place. They offer additional parking across the street and are conveniently located off the interstate. Definitely stop in and give this place a try!

First time I went here I was not very hungry so, I just ordered their full nachos ($10 ) and oh my gosh. Is this a meal for 5?! A little bit too much cheese but, these nachos are NO joke. I only get the special when i go here. For $9 (I believe), you get a pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, baked beans and a drink. I always put the coleslaw on my sandwich and it's amazing. I'm always satisfied when I walk back to work.

It comes across like an updated version of Famous Dave’s, the meats were good. The chicken was moist and tasty. The burnt ends have to be the best thing there, the garlic bread was good and the ribs were great. Good sauces, with fair prices for what you get. Edit : we were there a week ago again, the burnt ends were a bit on the dry side but the ribs are great. I think that’s what it worth coming for.

We did not care for the food here at all! It looked good when we ordered but very disappointed while eating. I had a pulled pork sandwich which was terribly dry. My brother in law had ribs which he enjoyed. My partner and I did not eat our meals and did not take them "to go" that pretty much sums it up.

Called at 6:10 for a very simple order: chicken nachos, sandwich with a side, and 2 scotcheroos. They told me it would be ready at 6:55...45 minutes. Seemed a little long for food that is already cooked and basically just needs to be scooped, but ok--I really didn't want to cook. I got there at 6:40 and my order was finally ready at 7:05. I got home, we sat down to eat, and everything was cold. I had the *pleasure* of heating up (dirtying my own dishes, of course, because they use cheap styrofoam) food that I drove to pick up and waited almost an hour for. Waste of time and money.

We made Smokey D’s a stop on our journey from Saint Louis to Minneapolis. We are glad we did. We got the Farm Boy (pictured). It was awesome! The fries were seasoned and had white gravy on them. My wife and I tackled it together but it whooped us. We weren’t able to finish this monstrosity! Believe the hype! It’s worth the stop.

Lots of food with great flavors. I get the brisket and sausage. The brisket is tender with a nice smokey flavor. The sausage is juicy without being greasy. The meat doesn't need sauce, but when I'm in the mood for sauce I get the extra-fiery. I like really spicy food and this sauce has good heat for a BBQ sauce, but isn't over powering. But again, I like really spicy food. For sides, I chose cucumber and onion salad. It's vinegary with a little sweetness. It tastes good and cleanses my palate. The other side is potato casserole. It's creamy sand cheesy with a little bit of herbs. For drink, I get ice tea or booze. They have Gold Peak tea and their bartender makes a decent Jameson and ginger ale.

Great food and great value. I got a jumbo tenderloin split. They cut it in half and serve on two buns for $8. Add a big order of fries for another $2. I eat 1 huge tenderloin and fries there and take the other one home. The next day, I decide to cut the other half in half because it is so big. I add another bun and have two sandwiches for this meal. What a deal!

Great BBQ! The burnt ends are fantastic, and the BBQ nachos are fabulous!! The french fries are also really good here. Tried the cherry and peach pie bites for dessert today... very underwhelmed with both, especially since it seemed like they used pie filling from a can. But their baked apple dumpling is delicious, so we'll stick with that next time.

One of the easiet 5-spots I've ever handed out. It seems most locales these days have their own “favorite son” BBQ joint, and Des Moines is no exception. Rarely though does the rest of the Barbecue World join in agreement, but in Smokey D's case, they most heartily do. If the multiple display cases filled with every conceivable award possible didn't tip you off this was some place special, the swarms of grill-lovers packing in every night should be a dead giveaway. Conveniently located just north and east of the 2nd Avenue exit (x135) of Iowa's crossroads of the nation I-80/35, Smokey D's draws a well-informed national crowd as well. Parking across the street to the south handles over-flow problems when the handicapped and limited spots next to the building fill up, so don't let a packed lot turn you away. Smokey's brisk carry-out business rates their own separate entrance on the north side. Grab-your-own seating helps keep down long lines during the weekends. After picking up a carry-out menu from the left-over box station next to the door, sending a delegate to actually order seems to work out best. Quick-moving servers will bring your order to the table, how they manage is a logistical feat others should only hope to copy! There aren't many establishments where I can comfortably recommend every item (especially the sides!) on the menu, if you are a BBQ fan and you have never dined at Smokey D's....

Half rack, potato casserole, jalapeno corn, garlic bread. Dry rub ribs were good,but a little dry. Potato casserole(kinda like cheesy potatoes) was not my cup of tea and were cool to lukewarm, jalapeno corn had right amount of heat. Garlic bread was good. Place is always super busy, but food comes out fast. I've eaten there a lot and this was first time I would rate it a low 4. They have a lot of different menu options, but I usually get the ribs and fries. It's right by the Harley shop so I can go browse after filling my belly.

The "dairy free" burnt ends sandwich was covered in butter and the potato salad tasted like it had chemicals or something in it. Worst I've ever had. Never going there again.

This place is great. You order at the counter (do not miss a chance to get the burnt ends and an order of the fried pickles), fill your own drink, sit any where, then they bring you the food. No waiting for a waiter/waitress (but please tip). I LOVE going here and anyone that isn't local this is the first place I recommend or take them too.

For a place bragging and showing all those trophies, I was expecting WAY BETTER. I know that I can't expect competition BBQ served in the restaurant, but there's a minimum. Everything (ribs, brisket, burned ends, ham) was dry from being in the food warmer too long. Wings where..... Plain and boring. Definitely disapointed And about the service.... NONE of the staff was smiling.... Lady at the order station was borderline rude. Guys, if you don't like your job, find another one.

I got the barbecued egg rolls with Asian sauce. Hubs picked a lunch combo with brisket, garlic bread, slaw and fries. We were given cups for our drinks and some kind of gizmo that helps the server find your table. In spite of so many people, we easily found a clean table. In no time at all, a server came with our food, checked to make sure we were happy and everything was correct. Not only was it correct, it was delicious. Husband loved the brisket and slaw. The fries were seasoned, not his favorite.

Yes, there are better establishments out there and even BBQ but this place is pretty good. It is located in the skywalk and can be pretty busy sometimes so you might wanna go a little early to beat the crowd.

Great food and lots of tables and space to eat. Very fast even at handling long lines. Even a free healthier options. Many dishes are very large and will last you a few meals. Calling ahead is a wonderful way to order for a family meal night (especially if you don't feel like cooking) and they've always gotten our order right.

Love the taste of their food especially the ribs. They aren't known for their Chicken Wings but I tried the wings and they were fantastic. Also best coleslaw and baked beans. The sassy sauce is the perfect blend of sweet with a little kick.

We went on a Sunday and it was our first time eating there and it will be our last! We walked in and were unsure of where to go since we thought it was an actual service restaurant. When we asked if we just sit or wait the person was rude about it and said we order in a line first. So we go to order where the girl there who took our order was also rude and seemed annoyed about us even being there. We got our food set at our table surprisingly but none of it was even any good. It all tasted the same and I even got the daily special of the hot turkey and mashed potatoes. I’ve had a better hot turkey at Perkins! I didn’t even finish it because it was so terrible. Super disappointing with all the good reviews on here.

Picture posted is not of actual food purchased however it’s real Q at its freshest. I’m an avid BBQ fan living in Tn and I travel all over the United States and Canada. I search out the nearest spot and go for it. This spot I was deeply disappointed when I was making m order. I heard the microwave ding and I asked the girl if she was rehearing the meat. She stated they get their meat from their other location and so they have to reheat it. It’s flash frozen she said to retain the freshness. Let me tell you, the owners of this place... if this is what you consider a proven method for your satellite location I’m sorry your in the business. I too smoke my own meats and catering events back home, people don’t let this place fool you. I’ve cooled plenty of meat, wrapped in foil and placed in a cooler to get warm for up to 6 hours. Opening the meat on the 6th hour and steam came out of the wrapping of a pork shoulder. So many better ways to do this. Keep them warm in a warmer and carve and slice as needed. Your method is producing dried out meat and I’m sure when it’s fresh it’s good stuff. Mac and cheese was good, slaw tasted commissary purchased. Beans tasted like bush’s beans I was told. I have many favorites across the country and they cook the night before and when it’s sold out for the day they close the doors. I’m tempted to try your other location to see if this too is your method there. I’m posting a picture of my pork shoulder as yours is not worthy to post. I had brisket and turkey, again I hate to say this all but one simple method of maintaining fresh would surprise your locals to wanna spread the word.

Just ok. We were driving through I-80. This place has good reviews. We ordered brisket & ribs. Brisket had a processed taste like something was added, so not the best quality. Ribs were tender and juicy. Sides were coleslaw, fries, mac& cheese, beans; would not order any of them again as we're poor quality. Outcome - one time stop.
