Best BBQ I’ve had in a while. I had their pulled pork sandwich and their Cuban. All their sauces were pretty good with extra spicy and root beer(?) being the best ones.
Delicious Food and great service! I thought the soda I got tasted funny (watery maybe) and instead of just giving me a new one and moving on they actually seemed interested/invested in fixing the "possible" issue with the carbonation ratio of their dispenser. (It could have just been my taste was off at the moment but regardless I thought the service was great)
Tasty food, fast friendly service
Very good food reasonably priced and well located downtown with parking
Amazingly delicious as ALWAYS!!! Great customer service too!! I needed to order and eat my food before work, and they had it out to me in less than 5 minutes!! Fresh, hot, and super delicious!! The Burnt ends are my favorite with the berry habanero sauce!!!
I'm an avid bbq enthusiast I smoke my own meats as well as find different bbq joints if I'm in a new town. I ordered brisket, burnt ends and pulled pork. Brisket and burnt ends were amazing but the pulled pork was very sad. Definitely need to figure out a different recipe for the pulled pork. Service was ok and restuarant seemed clean.
I used to pass by this place without noticing it. My family and I secured decided to stop by. Food is reasonably priced and you are given good portions. They didn't have any rib tips surprisingly given their name. I didn't ask if that was the hottest item. Loved the root beer bbq sauce.
Our favorite barbeque in this area!
By far the best BBQ I have ever had!!! We had our food delivered and it showed up early and hot!!!! Will definitely order again!!!
First time visit. It was awesome! Burnt ends, ribs and brisket were the best I've ever had. Will definitely be back when I am in town again.
Wasn't happy with the chicken strips, definitely were not hand battered as the menu stated. More like breaded frozen. Did like the fries and fried brussel sprouts though. Would like to try the BBQ.
The cornbread is amazing.
The best brisket!
This BBQ is amazing! The cornbread is a must too, so sweet :) went there for lunch. Loved it so much we made a to-go order for dinner!
I got the 1/2pound rib tip.the food was great, i just wish they gave u more for your buck. $9.18 for 5 rib tips and fries
Not bad; college crowd hangout.
Amazing, authentic BBQ! Best brisket I've ever had
Good food, good service.
Best ribs in the corridor, without question. If you don't agree, I will fight you. True story.
A wonderful atmosphere with good pricing, the cheapest mac n' cheese in town, and friendly staff.
The most tender pulled pork! And their cheese curds are amazing as well.
Love it great bbq place small but clean food great we will be going back
GREAT FOOD!!! Would visit again in a heart beat! Rib tips were cooked perfectly and full of flavor and fries where crunchy and hot.
Good
Awesome - great food, great service, solid vibe, good prices. Got a special sandwich, which was solid, and an order of fries (for $2!!!!) that filled me up. Will be back for happy hour! Excited that they have 6 taps.
Amazing
Food was SO great! Friendly staff and fast service! Definitely recommend!
My husband and I just moved to Iowa City back in April and Pops has become one of our favorite places! Their Mac and Cheese is seriously my favorite thing! I always add a little bit of their classic bbq into my Mac and Cheese and boyyyy is it delicious!!! The brisket sandwich is yummy and so are their rib tips! I definitely got to try more of their menu items
The employees were really nice to me and other people in the restaurant. Had a good variety of bbq sauces. I had gotten the wings and they had gotten made and served in about 5 minutes. I would recommend this place to people that want bbq style food and quick.
Gotta stop here! I had the pulled pork sandwich, and cauliflower with Ranch dressing. They have both indoor and outdoor eating areas. Girls- this is where the frat men hang out for lunch. Find yourself a stud to buy you lunch. ( Might happen -when pigs fly, or when the porker becomes a sandwich.) Staff is friendly- feel free to ask for free samples- won't happen unless you try. This building used to be a gas station, and has a few old pictures of what it used to look like. Enjoy!
Good food. Friendly service.
Will not go back...staff just standing around. The guys serving the food went out of a smoke break and then came right back in and served more food. We love barbeque but this was not top notch. Food had so much spice it was hard to eat. The potato salad was mainly onions. The mac and cheese coated your mouth with grease. The only good thing were the French fries.
Good food, EXTREMELY poor catering service, and unprofessional management. We chose Pop's to cater our wedding because we love the food there. In spite of our guest's rave reviews about the food (for just a lunch or casual dinner this place is awesome), the catering service left a LOT to be desired. Eric, the owner, was difficult to work with, rude, and we never did receive the requested copy of their certificate of liability insurance, which was required by our venue. We chose our menu and placed our deposit for our food in January 2017 for a June 2017 wedding. We were quoted $2000 for 130 people with a 10% deposit up front to reserve our spot. When we asked for a copy of the contract we received a photo copied order form with poorly written out instructions for what we had ordered. I had to fill in all the information for our venue, date, etc. even though the person I talked to on the phone (Eric, the owner) said he had taken all the information down. Our requests for a more formal contract were ignored. We thought it was a small thing and didn't think much of it until halfway through March when we received a call from Eric saying he had lost our "contract" and couldn't remember what we had ordered, what our date was, and whether we had paid our deposit. Again, we got things straightened out, but I was beginning to get worried. It was also during this phone call that Eric told me we were being "way undercharged" but that he was going to "let it slide" since he had had some staff turnover since we placed our initial order (according to the catering prices posted online we were charged correctly). When we contacted Pop's again at the end of May, 30 days out from our wedding, Eric was still shaky on the details but seemed to have things mostly in order. That is, until the week of our wedding when my fiance called to do our final confirmation... First, Eric had again misplaced our catering "contract" and had no idea when or where the wedding was, what time he needed to arrive, or what he needed to bring. He attempted to confirm back our order to us only to find he had mixed us up with another event the same day. He also asked if he could serve HyVee potato salad instead of his own recipe (why would we pay $2k to be served grocery store food?). He complained about our venue to my fiance, and then asked to show up to set up half an hour before dinner was to be served at our reception. The service only got worse on our wedding day. Eric sent his mother out while we were setting up to tell us that she and her husband would be at our venue at 4:00 on the day of to set up, and that Eric would be coming with the food later. We reiterated to her that we required all vendors to be completely set up before the ceremony began, and she assured me they would be. Come the day of there was no sign of anyone from Pop's at 4:00. Instead they showed up in the middle of our outdoor ceremony, distracting our guests from the service. They were still setting up when dinner began at 6:00, and Eric snapped at my bridesmaids saying "you need to fix this mess" when he had issues with the electrical plugs ins (we asked him to bring extension cords and power strips, but he didn't). Our DJ ended up having to unplug all his equipment so Pop's could power their food warmers, which left us with just a Bluetooth speaker to play music during dinner. We even had guests running around with extension cords trying to get the Pop's crew up and running, instead of enjoying the cocktail hour. Overall we were really looking forward to supporting one of our favorite mom and pop eateries, but the constant headaches made it barely worth it. When we called Eric to discuss our experience after the wedding he was defensive and rude, and dismissive of our concerns. Our guests very much enjoyed the food but I think we will be taking our business elsewhere in the future.
Never have I wanted to go back and grab another pulled pork sandwich so badly. Will definitely start to walk the extra block to grab some great food.
Had a taste for some BBQ before work. It smelled so good I grabbed 2 sandwiches, a brisket for now & a pulled pork for later. The blackberry habanero and root beer BBQ sauce is the bomb.
My wife and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. She had a chicken sandwich, I had a brisket sandwich, and we had corn bread and cole slaw. I'm not sure where they get the idea of bbq... Her chicken was very dry and tasted like someone had tossed it into smoke for a few minutes to give it a "smoked" flavor. My brisket wasn't much different. The corn bread tasted more like cake than corn bread (next time, try reading a corn bread recipe from a corn meal box and it'd be worlds better)... The slaw was bitter at best... And for the privilege of eating this we paid more than $25... Next time I want bbq I'll go to a place local to us where you can actually SMELL the smoke before you go in... Though I didn't even smell smoke in this place.... Should have figured when I got no smoke smell around them... Ah well, live and learn...
Good BBQ, great service.
This place bas melt in your mouth brisket. Best brisket I have ever had
Great little place to eat, good food!
We visited this place after some friends and we were hankering for some BBQ. We were quite excited by what we found. Walking in your greeted by the delightful aroma of delicious meat and other meat related pleasantries. The decor is plenty rustic and really fits the vibe of the place as it is very casual. The meat options are more plentiful than I was expecting. Plenty of different varieties of pork, beef, chicken, and sausage. Items come in single meat varieties 4 in sandwiches. The sandwiches were weird where we found most of our favorites. The Cuban sandwich was delicious pork Cuban style with some ham, cheese and pickles. It was really good! I have the Bahn Mi sandwich and it was excellent. Really nice flavor and on some great bread. The only downfall was that we were unable to enjoy the normal pork belly version as they were out of said belly. The substitution of smoked pork was just fine however. We also shared a half rack of ribs with some friends and they too were excellent. The sides were equally lovely. We had some fried brussel sprouts and these where one of the best appetizers that we've had in a long time. Definitely not healthy like mom used to make, however we're certainly not looking to save calories by going to a BBQ joint. The sweet potato fries and the normal fries where also strong to quite strong. They have plenty of beverage options including a number of local beers and some really good iced tea. The most exciting thing about this place however was the array of sauces that were available. The meats were all excellent and with the addition of any number of the sauces they were made even better. The sweet stout sauce with particularly good as was the Korean BBQ sauce. The Carolina mustard was good as well and gave those looking for a different option, something to slather with. The lack of cornbread and pork belly the day we were there was a bummer and kept them from 5 stars at preeent, however they're doing some excellent things here and we were pleasantly surprised by how good everything was. This is another great addition to downtown and will be another great reason to go get BBQ anytime you're feeling like it.
Had a turkey sandwich, baked beans and cornbread. Everything was delicious!
Cuban, and fried broccoli are amazing.
This is a lovely townie place with great food. Staff is very friendly. The hotdog basket is my favorite.
The food is good, the prices are fair. Service is fast and crowds are usually reasonable. There is free parking. They are my favorite BBQ in town. Give it a shot!!!
First time there had the pulled pork sandwich, it was really good dipped it into the original sauce. Very friendly service will be going back. Great value as well, five bucks for the sandwich
Great food and easy going staff. Environment is comfortable and good place to just relax and eat.
Best Smoked meats in the area. My favorite would have to be the burnt end sandwich or the smoked chicken wings. Also the cornbread is pretty good. Keep up the great work.
Great food! Tons of good sauces!
none of us got anything we didn't like! potato salad unique and flavorful, ribs chicken and even the tenderloin, all very good; french fries, even the drinks. only complaint was that it was too hot in there but even the climate control kid wasn't complaining too much! staff was attentive and polite.
Friendly staff & food is pretty great! Tried the garlic herb & parm fries. Both were good but Parm were AMAZING! BBQ sauces r unique & flavorful. They sell dumplings as a vegetarian option too... & even those were pretty good.
Sooo tasty!! Definitely the best bbq in the IC area. Pop's is simply better quality, more authentic, pretty decent prices, and has a better atmosphere with shaded outdoor seating. Their dry smoked wings are the best we've found in eastern Iowa and they seriously have the best fries ever. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
Brisket sandwich was dry, no sauce on anything. Ordered bbq sauce and ranch didnt receive any even though paid for. French fries were soggy. Disappointed for the price and reviews.
Great food and bbq sauce selection! Will come back anytime I'm in town
Some of the best BBQ I've ever had.
I eat here often good food just wish there was a little more bang for your buck
Our family likes to go to barbecue joints and 8. We went to this one and we're pleased.
great place to eat
excellent food, friendly service, good atmosphere.
Quick, friendly service, and food is tasty. Those garlic and herb fries are super greasy, however and will avoid those in the future, but the variety of sauces make the BBQ something special.
I really engoy the Cuban and fried pickles.
Good food, good prices!
Has to be one of the best if not the best bbq in Iowa City!!! Their burnt ends are my favorite!
Nice staff, great bbq!
What's not to love about this place, great service and phenomenal food! That Mac and cheese
The service was fast and the staff was helpful polite, the food was amazing as usual and the place was clean as it should be. I highly recommend it to anyone that's in the area.
Got a half rack of ribs, onion rings, and corn bread for take out. Was probably the best ribs I've eaten in years, plus the corn bread was to die for. Would recommend to anyone!
Food was delish...service was good
Very good, quick food! We had the chicken sandwich (with onion rings) and the BBQ Cuban (with fries), everything fresh and hot. Definitely a go-to for good BBQ!
Best BBQ! Great food, service & ambience! Fantastic catering! Well-run!
Awesome friendly staff. Best ribs and Cornbread I've ever had. Great sauce.
Some of the best ribs I've had in a while. The fried pickles are great too!
The BBQ here is fine, but it's expensive and nothing to write home about. The mac and cheese is pretty good, wings are fair, and their pulled pork is pretty good, but their ribs (flagship BBQ item) are way too sweet and small, cheese curds were awful, and the fries were meh. The selection of sauces is nice, but nothing was too special. I am fairly new to the Iowa City area and haven't had too much BBQ, but even Mosley's (who I'm not a huge fan of ) is better. Jimmy Jacks is MUCH better. I'd take all these five star reviews with a grain of salt, because they must not have had barbecue from elsewhere.
Good food. Good service. Great smells and a focused menu. Easy to make choices and several sauces to please any pallet. Parking is not for big cars and trucks but parking is available near by.
Food and service was amazing!! A little pricey though.
I just tried this place for the first time. They have a good pulled pork sandwich, and excellent fries and customer service. The prices seem quite reasonable too. This is great restuarant, I will definitely be eating here again.
Good smoked meat, casual place.
Best BBQ sauce selection in town! Root beer sauce = just say yes. Hottest sauce is actually hot.
Great food, not so great service!
I came home to leftovers. I'm completely blown away. The BEST ribs I have ever eaten. The bbq pineapple sauce, not sure what it's called, is AMAZING!!! I will be going there in the very near future for sure. I was told that the staff was very polite and nice. GREAT JOB ALL AROUND!! I'm going to finish my ribs and season fries now! :)
The smoked chicken wings are amazing!
Excellent smoked chicken...flavorful and juicy. Awesome fries when cooked right (not crispy)...not consistent.
Good food and good service.
Friendly and fast service. Burnt end sandwich was great!
Great food, nice staff. Bbq Cuban was good, made with brisket. Fried pickles were good. Needed the ranch for a perfect bite
The staff at Pop's was very kind walking us through the menu for our first time here. Very tasty food and they have Millstream on tap which is super cool. I grabbed their root beer on tap and got the pulled pork sliders. Extremely tasty and well portioned. If you're looking for something different from your usual in IC, look no further!
Great menu, lots of sides, dumplings, millstream and john's beer on tap. The atmosphere is great, which includes a patio. The owner works with other local businesses and is a great business man and very friendly to his customers.
Lots of food, fast, and cheap. Great spot for BBQ lunch deals. Parm fries are a must try.
Quality is ok, serving size is poor. Overpriced.
Good food, but mistakes on orders more than once.
As a person who has traveled the country for work for 2 plus decades. My pastime has been to find the best bbq everywhere. This folks is legit BBQ the burnt ends are melt in your mouth the turkey moist and smokey. Mac and cheese top shelf ect.
On Friday October 20th,2017 @4 p.m i visited Pops Bar b que. Overall I like the food I like the place have gone as much as I can since they first opened. Just didn't understand why i was not able to redeem my free meal. I have made my eighth and ninth purchase today so when i asked the young lady could i redeem my free meal she wasn't sure she asked her co-worker who appeared to be leaving but was still behind the counter working and talking with employees. I was denied stating that i have to do it on my next visit. However nothing on the stamp card specifically specifies when you may redeem. I further explained i do not live in Iowa city and with my work schedule and life I don't get out here that often and then she just walks away further denying me while drinking a beer and then proceeded to sit at a table with a friend moments later my order was ready. The young lady who was drinking a beer and denied me the free meal option handed me my food and when i noticed i onky had two sauces for two rib tip dinner baskets I asked for more and was given about three more sauces by the beer drinking employee and honestly she left with her female friend tucking the open alcohol bottle under her jacket as i was leaving the establishment confused.
Fav BBQ place in the area...
I've never gotten bad food from here. You can get away with a ton of food for under $10, too.
Used to be much better. Sadly, it has gone downhill
One of my favorite BBQ places
Amazing! My favorite bbq restaurant in Iowa city.
Everything was phenomenal. While it felt a little pricey, I know I'll be back. My only complaint is the parking! Absolute cluster - be prepared to park elsewhere and walk. My personal favorite item is the fried Brussel sprouts!
Great food
Great food and friendly staff. Terrific location.
Excellent food! Best BBQ around in my opinion. The sides are amazing as well! Taste like homemade and prices are good too for such quality. You won't be disappointed...oh and grear kids menu as well!
Pretty awesome place, great food, kept things simple! Several sauces of great flavor, fast service. However, fries were greasy and the price of the special was more expensive than the individual parts off the board.
Really liked the BBQ. As someone that smokes my own meat I can say this is finally a BBQ restaurant that knows what they are doing.
I dont like bbq sauce
Reasonably priced BBQ that tastes great!
Very good , nice service.
My fav place in IC for bbq!
Just amazing BBQ and I've had what I thought was the best BBQ down south. I never write reviews but this place was amazing. The BBQ brisket was a 10, the staff is super friendly, and the blackberry habanero sauce was life.
The Ribs were good but the fries aren't worth it
Very good BBQ, not kc bbq, but still very good
Best barbecue in IC!
This place is to die for I am super picky and don’t normally eat bbq but this food was amazing and I absolutely LOVE it. I defenetly recommend
Beef hot dog, poppy seed bun, yellow mustard, white onion, sweet pickle relish, sport peppers, tomatoes, kosher dill pickle spear, celery salt...Apparently the owners at pops have never heard of or ever had an actual chicago hot dog, it angered me when I got one and it wasnt anything close to a Chicago style hot dog
Great Bbq. Friendly staff.
Some great bbq in this area really great bbq sauces
Great food first time in the place and I would recommend too anyone, little pricey I felt but this is bbq and quality cost. Kudos too the owner for choosing quality.
Root beer BBQ sauce amazing good service great food
Serivce was Great! Food was AMAZING! Only Critique I'd give is drain brussel sprouts more and out down more to soak up oil in a to-do container. Oil got all over my sandwich. And was like a puddle of water in the bag I was carrying my to-do container in.
Fantastic bbq!!! Just as good as Memphis or other southern bbq joints.
Excellent barbecue and a great daily deal that was appetizing to a new customer. Sauces were unique and tasty. Great if you miss the feeling of Texas BBQ. Bad: Sides are not the strong suit. Both potato salad and coleslow are underspiced. This is a chronic problem in Iowa. I recommend adding some onion and a bit of paprika. Regardless, super impressed. This place is Awesome!
Brisket sandwich was amazing. Also love the sweet potato fries! Good work!
Good food, but with a restaurant right off a college campus displaying a Wi-Fi, they won't give out their password. I came to work through lunch, but the waitress responded we don't know thr password because the owner doesn't want us on our phones. When I expressed I needed to work through lunch, she was too scared to call her owner about it. Sounds like the owner needs to get his priorities better and put systems in place for getting in trouble using their phones, and allowing customers use Wi-Fi so people can work through lunch. All restaurants do it nowadays. This is a disadvantage, and unfortunately, I won't be coming here again because of this fact. I'm always needing to work through lunch. I'll miss the food.
Wonderful service and great food!
Real fast service for a BBQ place. We had the pulled pork and the brisket and both were good. They also had some unique sauces to try. My only criticism would be the salt on the fries. They were over salted, but other than that the place is good.
stopped by during a college visit... awesome bbq! I will be back
awesome bbq
Amazing food, friendly service, great place for friends, fun and food.
Great tastes, amazing owner! Catered our wedding and I would trust Eric with any event
Terrible customer service made me wait longer than expected by holding up my order when it was done and made me feel so unwelcomed here. To the employees it's not my fault you earn minimum wage here.
Staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. Definitely coming back!
Excellent bbq
Amazing food, great price, best service in town!
I don't understand how there's even 1 bad review, this place was awesome. I've been smoking meat for close to 2 years, and in that time I've tried and been disappointed by every "high end" bbq joint I could find as it just wasn't as good as homenade. Pop's BBQ is the first place that I've found where I was genuinely impressed by the food, and the customer service may be the best I've had anywhere. And it is by no means "expensive" for a bbq joint, it's cheaper than you'll find at another place and the other's have lower quality food. We'll be back any time we're in the Iowa City area, I'd give more stars if I could. We had the ribs, wings, mac and cheese (a must-try,) and a pulled pork sandwich. All were great.
Had the brisket special. It was very good.
So good!!! I usually order through Order-up, but I have been to the restaurant as well. The food is fresh and made to order. I recommend the rib tips.
Great smoked meat choices, fair prices, great service and clean. I walked in almost a half hour before they opened and was offered a place to set and they very politely explained that they were not open yet so there would be a delay..i will return every time I am in the area.
We had Pops catered for our work. The staff was very friendly and brought all the equipment to keep the food warm. The brisket and smoked turkey were great.
Best BBQ in Iowa City. I don't go as much as I should but it is amazing. I'm pretty picky when it comes to food and this place blows me away.
Delicious food and very thoughtful service.
Good BBQ. We stopped at Pop's for a quick bite and the brisket was great. Tried the blackberry habanero sauce. ..yum
Good BBQ, a nice selection of sauces and great sides.
Good food, nice vibe, very reasonably priced food.
Best little BBQ resturant in Iowa City
This place is great! Pricing is a la cart and some of the sides are pretty expensive, so it can add up. However, the sandwiches are super tasty!!
Great Midwest bbq. The ribs are smoked daily and they have a great selection of sauces
Regular fries weird delicious and crispy. The sweet potato fries had way too much salt and we're a little soggy. Brisket was good but had way too much fat in it. Burt tips we're good and tender. A little expensive but a nice meal.
Awsome pulledpork and beans...reminds me of Texas
A fantastic BBQ spot right near downtown. The menu is compact, but what they have is all delicious. The chicken wings are exceptional, and I haven't tried a side item I haven't loved. In my opinion, the burnt ends are the best thing on the menu. You really can't go wrong here and the BBQ sauces that they offer are great and their root beer sauce is uniquely delicious.
Decent BBQ. The portions were small for the price
Great service and they are one of the only restaurants downtown with a parking lot
Really good barbecue cooked to perfection
Best damn place I've eaten at in iowa city...hands down
Really good food. Parking lot is too small.
The burnt ends sandwich is their best! Good beer selection!! And friendly staff!!!
Pops has the best BBQ in town. Their pork ribs are so delicious and tender that I find myself going back several times a year.
Ribs were delicious and moist!
Excellent food, excellent service, highly recommended. Parking is limited. There is an outdoor patio. Spacious inside.
I was a big fan of The Pit which was previously in this location, but after a few trips to Pop's, I like it even more than I liked The Pit. I'm not entirely sure why there aren't more people there each time I go (poor location maybe?), but I'll take it, less waiting time for me. I've been to Pop's a couple of times per month since it opened. Pros: unique menu with lots of options (including harb/garlic fries -- yum!), usually fresh and quite flavorful, oftentimes there's plenty of room in there to sit, my favorite brisket in Iowa City, and the chicken isn't bad either Cons: sometimes takes an unusually long time to get food (10 mins for 1 sandwich?), they got rid of their turkey (perhaps not a good seller?), friend got ribs once and they were rubbery as if they had been made that afternoon and microwaved when we got there
Amazing atmosphere, and best of all great food. Best wings in town and fast service to boot!
