I can't remember the last time I rated a restaurant so low.... no greeting when we came in, 3 employees went past us and no one greeted or offered to seat us. Finally someone sat us after more people came in behind us. The waitress was fine at first, got our drinks and appetizer, but then she got a table of 8. She took their drink orders and got all of their drinks, then got their appetizer orders and served those, then went to get their dinner order. Never once between all of that did she check on us, bring out our meals, refill our empty drinks that were on the edge of the table. Someone else brought our food out around the time she was starting their appetizer orders and the fries and onion rings were cold so it had obviously been sitting in the back for awhile. I also didn't get the salad with house dressing that I'd asked for. When I saw her taking the dinner orders at the other table, I sighed and said something to my son and then someone else that was walking by finally over - I think he heard me. I asked him for refills on our cups and told him the sides were cold and that I just wasn't hungry anymore. I did NOT ask for a discount, I just wanted something to drink and to leave. Neither of us finished our meals and for the first time that I can remember we left the food and didnt even bring it home for left overs or to feed to our chickens.... The appetizer was good, my ton said he liked the baked potato. Cold fries and onion rings on my plate - well those are never good cold. My meal was, egh. The guy that refilled our water asked if we wanted the check, I said yes and I have no idea why he asked if I wanted two checks when I was having dinner with my 13 year old son. That was odd. He made a point of telling me that he took the appetizer off the bill (since my dinner was cold??) I said that wasn't necessary, paid and left. I wouldn't go back. I saw other great reviews but to have a waitress completely ignore us for that long, cold food, leaving a salad off... Simply not worth my money.

The food here is good. What I don't like is the restaurant wasn't busy but everyone there were all seated right next to everyone else. If your not busy, spread people out. They will have a much better experience.

Many years ago Maxie's was the place to go. Not so today! I ordered the hamburger lunch. It comes with no bun, onion rings and fries and a salad. I ordered my patty medium well. It came medium rare. They took it back and recooked it but it was still only medium. It was a pre-shaped patties so it had been frozen. It was flavorless. It tasted as plain as water. The onion rings were greesy and the fries were plain. The parmesan dressing was the only good thing about my meal. The lettuce was iceberg rather than spring mix. The ketchup bottle on the table was empty so we had to ask for another one. The waitress was friendly. I was very disappointed in my meal.

We ate here earlier today and I have to say it was one of the worst places I’ve ever eaten at. My grandpa is very hard of hearing and the entire time the waitress was visably annoyed by this and would mutter snide comments under her breath. On top of all this the food was cold, bland and dry, not to mention my dad found a long black hair in his salad. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone with taste buds.

Best bartenders in West Des Moines. Food is always amazing and the staff is very friendly too. If you like tenderloins you should have one from Maxies. They also make all of there own salad dressing too. Blue cheese and the Italian are my favorites. We always go for the Monday night steak special.

An old school relic of a supper club. An intimate environment with all the old favorites on the menu. The onion rings are a standout, must have. I truly enjoy Maxie's and recommended it for a night when you want something outside of your normal routine. You won't be blown away, but you will have a nice meal.

Ordered Steak Sandwich and Lasagna. Plate was hot on the lasagna but the center of the pasta was still cold. Steak Sandwich was barely warm and the center was cold, fries and rings were cool and looked as though they sat around in the kitchen for an hour. Positive, the waitress was really nice and apologetic. Manager couldn't take the time to come ask what the problem was Will not ever return.

I went here with two friends because one of them had received a mailer telling about their hamburger of the month. It was lunchtime (11:30), and all three of us ordered the White Cheddar Burger with their onion rings & a special honey sauce right on the burger, and fries on the side. The wait for our food was only about twelve minutes, and the ambiance was quite pleasant. That hamburger was the BOMB!!! One of the best I've ever had at any restaurant! And it was large, as was the side order of fries that came with the burger! I ended up taking half of it home with me. Over the course of our lunch, our waitress was back three times to make sure our experience here was excellent - and it was. Maxie's is an established restaurant with a variety offering of food from sandwiches to steaks, seafood, and much more. But I firmly recommend the White Cheddar Burger ... it was DELICIOUS!!

A lot of people compare it to high school cafeteria food but that’s a compliment. Old, cold, over cooked, bland rubber. The only thing that wasn’t cold was my beer. Warm and flat. The steak is far too chewy to actually eat. The French dip was a couple thin strips of beef jerky on a dry hot dog bun. Came to $70 would have paid $20 for it.

The rarebit burger was pretty good. The meat tasted good and was cooked well. The onion rings were KILLER! Fries were pretty good too. My family said their salads were good, and the spaghetti and meatballs were just ok. Prices were fair. I would return.

Ate here last night, and I must say the lasagna was excellent! Awesome garlic bread too, but don't ask to substitute more of it in place of the salad that comes with the meal. They won't do it; for that reason and that reason only, I give them 4 stars. I will absolutely go back though. The food was awesome!

Ordered baked cavetelli. Came with salad and two pieces of garlic bread. Homemade italian salad dressing that you can purchase by the bottle. Accomodated request for marinara instead of meat sauce. Cavatelli could have been warmer.

Great atmosphere quietenought that we could talk and hear without any problem ( we went with a couple that we had not seen in months). My ribs were great, fall off the bone. There was no push to get us out. We probably did overstay our welcome but there was no evidence of this from our waitress.

Service is above average. Served at proper temperature. They cook like grandma though, everything but the meat is good. Steaks and chops are burnt. Seasoning is very weak so you mostly just taste charcoal. Onion rings are great if you get em fresh. Overall the price is about 30% to high for the quality.

Overall, nice, and pretty much what you'd expect from a family neighborhood restaurant. I had a burger because they're supposedly renowned for them. Blue cheese, with cottage fries and their "award winning" onion rings. The burger was fine, although the cheese wasn't melted, the cottage fries were severely undercooked and they charged extra for lettuce and tomato slices. The onion rings were onion ring shards. It was about $10, which I'd say was about $2.50 too much. The martini was good: well made, and full. Blue cheese stuffed olives. Come with a friend and take advantage of the 2-for-1 drinks from 4:30 to 6:30. Decor was what you'd expect in West Des Moines, which is to say, plain and kind of charming. Service was attentive without being pesky. Overall, I'd probably come again, but it wasn't as nice as I'd hoped. :-)

We really enjoyed our meal here and the portions were huge! This is not a trendy or modern restaurant, but a solid, consistent Midwestern menu (i.e., strongly meat and potatoes based, not much spice or "exotic" flavors) and atmosphere. Food is homemade and done well. We will definitely be back!

The last time I visited Maxie's they were still at the original location on Ingersoll. That must have been the early 1970s. Decided to try them out tonight. now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. We pretty much had the place to ourselves probably because of the weather. Ordered the combination breaded veggies ; onion rings, breaded mushrooms, fried pickles & fried green beans. All were hot, crisp and perfectly seasoned. Dinner was a Rarebit burger and the white cheddar bacon jam Burger. Both burgers were prepared exactly as ordered. all of that plus a couple of glasses of half priced house wine and expert service made for a surprisingly awesome evening. Maxie's will definitely be a place we will visit often from now on.

I had heard good things about this place, and it was my first time here. I was very disappointed. I ordered the burger medium, but it came well done. It did not have a good flavor. The Culver's burger I had 2 days prior was much better. The fries were thin like I like, but tasted like they were cooked in flavorless oil. To say that the onion rings were cold would be an exaggeration, but they were far from hot. The server was okay, but she seemed to be in a bad mood. I can't imagine this was typical considering how long they've been in business, so maybe I'll try again.

Feels like a throwback to a different era - the days of the traditional supper club. You walk into the softly lit, traditional setting with Frank Sinatra playing quietly in the background. Separate rooms for the lounge and restaurant. Attentive service with classic fare that is well-prepared and served in ample portions. Great setting for long conversations.
