This Restaurant is classified in the category of French restaurant.
Great food and great service. We had a large group and felt well taken care of. The Mac and cheese was excellent!
First anniversary was amazing, second anniversary was disappointing. They changed the duck dish from breast to leg. The steak frite was good, but not phenomenal. None of the beer we ordered was good. Service, though, is always top notch. We will go back for one more try on the next special occasion.
Love the brunch! Good selection and friendly staff. We typically make a reservation because it can get busy.
Wide selection of oysters on the half. Luscious. Ask for Jim the bartender for exquisite drinks.
This should honestly be a one star review. Because the ambience noise level is so freaking loud, I had to yell at my server when I was ordering. Put some heavy blankets on the walls! Please!! I can’t her myself appreciate the good things about this restaurant! Collan, our server was amazing! He’s so freaking cool. And as a result, he was more than helpful and more than accommodating and more than personable. The food was good, as usual.
A great find in downtown Des Moines Escargot, Onion Soup, Sandwiches, Fresh Seafood, Full Dinner Menu what more can you ask for. The servers are very helpful explaining any questions you may have with a knowledgeable answer. The ambiance is most pleasant and no rushing. The prices are quite reasonable for the quality of food served. We had a great meal here when in town for a conference. It was a Monday night and got really busy, which affected the service. Our waiter acknowledged and apologized. We were not in a hurry and fine with it, but I could tell other diners were not as patient.
Nice place to chill
Always wonderful! Best vegan poutine I've ever had.
Excellent food and atmosphere!
Excellent food and service!! Happy hr til close on Tuesdays which was a great surprise for us! Def will be goin back
Excellent food.
Great service...GREAT food!... Definitely will go back.
Get the charcuterie plate &/or duck fat fries poutine.
Amazing steak! Could cut it with a spoon!
One of our favorite restaurants. The original one was the first date I had with my now fiancee. It's a bit noisy but that feels like the French ambiance. The food is tasty and served in filling but not too large of portions. Wine selection is good as well. If you're in the mood for French cuisine Django is a serious contender in Des Moines.
Great service! Good atmosphere. The food was fantastic!
Excellent French bistro fare with a good wine selection.
Amazing food. I had the duck fries and onion rings as appetizers, then Mac & Cheese as an entree. New location is a little loud but I would definitely go back. Recommend for a date especially!
The wine selection was good. Service was okay at best-at most points in the evening we’d have empty, used dishes stacked up on the edge of the table and our server couldn’t catch the hint that maybe they should be cleared. Even when he did clear some he’d only take one or two. The Brussels were tasty but salted poorly because some spots were like a salt lick and others were just right. You really can’t screw up French fries too badly so those were good. I ordered a steak salad and I’d say it was disappointing. I expected it to have more developed flavors, instead I got lettuce, cold veggies, an unseasoned steak and tons of dressing. I’d go back for cocktail hour only next time.
Always outstanding food, drinks and service!
We booked a party there after being rudely shut out by another nearby establishment. It was very last minute but the staff there bent over backwards to accommodate us. The food suggestions were spot on, the bar hostess assigned to our party was very friendly and efficient and we did not have to mortgage the house to throw a wonderful surprise party for two newly engaged people. Would highly recommend !!
May '17 - The service and environment were nice, it's just that the food was a different story. Being our first visit we didn't splurge on $40 plates, we wanted to see what the menu had to offer as a whole. The appetizers were pushed hard and it seemed the staff were well versed in how they were prepared and background of the items. The preparation and presentation were very nice. The dinners were more simple. No stories, just a "rare or medium" type question. I ordered a tuna steak sandwich that came with a salad and french fries (the fries were extra so it was a $20 plate). The Tuna was over seasoned to say the least. I'm guessing they were disguising the overwhelming fish flavor that will sour your taste for another 24 hours. The salad was wilted and spoiled. I get dressing on the side, but now I know why they were so insistent having the dressing already served on the lettuce. The fries (not the ones cooked in duck grease) were nothing to write home about. In-n-out would put these to shame for one quarter the cost. Thank you for reading.
Lovely ambience, great food, Awesome service
The service was outstanding, the food very good and the atmosphere charming! Enjoyed our experience there! So glad to have them back!
the french toast is life changing. best part of an all around amazing meal at a unique restaurant with great decor. other notable mentions: the cherry sundae, poutine, and hanger steak (not pictured) the shellfish plate was perfect for our group of 7 - the lemony mussels were my absolute favorite! would definitely come back.
Amazing drinks during happy hour, awesome entrees, sexy mood vibe, also best oysters I've had in Iowa yet
Stephanie and Maria are the best! We're always treated like emperors here and they're VERY accommodating with our food allergies! The best sushi in Des Moines, hands down.
No corkage fee, great atmosphere
10/10 would recommend
Disclaimer: This review is just a little biased because I actually got stood up, or "ghosted" as the millennials would say, for this dinner. So I probably wasn't in the perfect mindset to truly enjoy the food as much as I would have if I had good company with me. But as it turns out since the other person was a no-show anyway they weren't capable of being good company. But alas, I digress... French cuisine, which I'm not used to, but I went in knowing full well the theme of the flavors was best described as "understated." Light, delicate flavors is exactly what you get - mostly. My crab appetizer came with some toasted bread had a bit of an unexpected flavor in the bread which wasn't light or delicate at all. In fact, it was strong !!! The crab portion of the appetizer, had a flavor I couldn't place that overpowered the flavor of the of the crab, so I couldn't place what the dominant flavor was supposed to be. The toasted bread underneath had a flavor that implied it was cooked directly next to a few burgers, or where a few burgers had been cooked and then the bread was cooked in that spot on the grill. In other words, the bread tasted like burger meat. In most cases I would have been like "Oh wow, it's meat flavored, awesome!" but not when I'm dining on French cuisine. It just seemed very out of the blue and didn't make sense So this appetizer was a bit of a misfire from the kitchen. It wasn't overcooked and I'm not an expert on the dish, so I didn't send it back and I didn't complain. Maybe it's actually supposed to be that way ? The Caesar salad was good, but even the Caesar dressing had an understated, light and delicate flavor not typical of Caesar salads, but maybe intentionally more in the true fashion of French cuisine. Again, not an expert. The server made a nice recommendation, Beef Bourgignon. At $27, this was very much a middle of the road item as far as the price point on the menu. The meat was wonderfully slow roasted, and could be pulled apart effortlessly with just a fork and another utensil. The carrots and onions in the dish were cooked perfectly, soft on the inside and firm down the center retaining the integrity of the vegetable, but allowing them long enough to cook to open up the flavor. The type of sauce on the dish I don't remember so I'm just going to go full redneck and call it a light gravy, because well, that's what it tasted like, but much lighter. It was red wine based, and again was a light (gravy) and understated in flavor, but a nice balance to the items on the top of the dish. Finally, the noodles A very wide, flat noodle, which I believe may have been made in-house. I'm guessing this to be true because they were not al dente, like you get many times from a dry pasta, pre-made and then cooked when ordered, nor were they overdone. That being said, I don't know if this pasta was a good match for the dish. Maybe a gnocchi or potato croquettes would have been a better pairing. Overall the food was good, a few surprises here and there, but that comes with a new experience. I will most likely go back and try another item on the menu before reaching a full decision about this place. One night at a restaurant can never give you the full assessment of a place. 2nd chances can be a good thing, but we don't just go throwing those around to anybody who stands you up for French cuisine, now do we...
Perfect food per the usual. It seems like they never mess up a dish. Would love it if they could bring back ratatouille
Amazing as always.
Great happy hour, tasty seafood.
Not only is the food some of the best in Des Moines, but our server was absolutely incredible. We threw some curve balls for meal alterations and everything was perfect. Fantastic flavors, delicious desserts and a cozy classy atmosphere.
Must have with great people, creamy and wonderful food, I never had food this tasty, worth every spare money for regular or office party, top thumbs up!
Overall experience was great. Had a very competent waitress. Decided to order 3 small plates. Potato Leak Soup could have been a little hotter as well as the frites. Onion soup was delicious as was the Spinach Salad and mussels. Will definitely return.
Stopped into Django's new location on Locust with some co-workers over lunch. The decor seemed nice and we sat in the upstairs balcony. It seemed loud up here and it was hard to hear conversations. I ordered the Django Chicken Club with onion rings. Everything tasted fine, although a little messy. Nothing really stood out for me, but I would come back. I was a little off put by the aroma of the oyster bar as you first walk in.
Food amazing, service was fantastic!
It was a first for me and it was fantastic!
Excellent service and amazing food. We love the new location!
Wow! We had four guests. Each ordered a different dish and each was incredibly sated. The mussels are wonderful. The lobster spaghetti was wonderful. The cocktails were delightful. No complaints it was perfection.
One of the best meals I have ever had! I had the vegan gnocchi....absolutely beautiful! Excellent service and joyous ambience. Make a reservation. It was busy on a Tuesday night.
Delicious food, service, and ambiance. Had the croque monsieur and it was great. Onion ringhs are also great.
Wonderful experience and watching David DeHaan create artful magic with foods was amazing. We highly recommend this restaurant which is a classy restaurant and a very good staff. Thank you for a wonderful evening and fantastic foods!
Excellent food and service
Phenomenal service and even more savory menu items. Their creme brulee is just as amazing. Definitely recommended for a date night.
Fantastic food every time. Slow service on occasion. But usually worth the wait. Love the charcuterie board and the pork chops and the duck fat fries are great.
Great place for brunch. Lively atmosphere.
Very good food and fast and friendly service. Another Formaro Great!!!!
Dude let me be clear and free to avoid any sort of confusion. When u eat here and say the name of the restaurant, don't say it wrong. I am now banned from this establishment and I'm on their watchlist. I would recommend this diner to everyone!
Just had lunch here with friends and ordered seared salmon and it was amazing! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the combination of the spinach, fennel, bacon and beurre blanc works well with the salmon. Our server was very attentive and great! Would definitely come back again.
Amazing service
Great food, service, bartender and environment. Fast, friendly wait staff. The food had a unique flavor on common dishes.
This place was definitely worth it! The food was awesome, and the service was good. I thought my service was pretty fast for a Saturday evening, especially since it was the Saturday before Christmas. The French onion soup was pretty good in my opinion. I had a picture of the French Onion soup but I can’t seem to find it. Attached are pictures of the food and wine I had. I don’t remember the specific name of my dish but it was Scallops St. Jacques or something like that. Very delicious! Fair warning, this place is expensive, but it is worth it.
The oysters were good and the selection of cheese they use was nice. Orchestrate restaurants don't disappoint.
Great atmosphere and quality drinks and food...waiter was such a gentleman with great suggestions.
Nice atmosphere ! Very good food. They have Belgium Beer Westamalle!
Good food good service.
Wow, was super awesome. Little expensive but very worth it. Staff was great, food was superb and very relaxed environment.
Food is delicious! One of the best burgers I've had, and amazing bread as well. We love their poutine and their "no corkage fee". I'm not a fan of how many of the tables are so close together. We could hear the entire conversation of the party next to us. Other than that, the ambiance is very nice. Our server was quite cold with and us this last visit. He seemed to have an attitude with us from start to finish, which made for an awkward experience.
Great place for a casual yes and elegant feel of French dining. Peaceful and refined ambiance without pretense. Quality food, simple and flavorful. Attentive and respectful service. This place attracts me for the first time to French style cuisine and care. After Cafe du Monde best bignes I've had. Enjoy to the fullest!
Food was amazing staff was awsome
Local favorite. Especially when I return to town.
Food and service at the new location are as good as ever. Very noisy though, but I've heard they are working on a solution for that.
Best steak I've had in awhile & great service.
Quintessential French Bistro, great food great presentation, awesome charcuterie, just go!!
Food is great, clean water. Friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere .
An amazing eatery that highlights this surging community
This is a restaurant for an evening out. Great place and good wine selection.
Great steaks and perfect atmosphere. The cocktails are well balanced and well made.
5 Star Food & Service. Good recommendations and top notch service. The food tastes great each time, but the oysters are the real reason we keep going back. Martinis aren't bad either.
Great French food just right outside of downtown Des Moines. The cheese plate had some great flavors from sweet or savory or sour. They also have Kronenbourg(like a French Miller lite) which you don't normally see in the states. The bone in pork chop had some good flavors as well.
Wonderful vibe. They were really busy when my fiance and I went so we were put in a party room with two other parties and the echo was really bad. I'm sure that will be resolved if they find a new location soon, though.
So good. Amazing drinks (had one of the best Old Fashioneds I've ever had). Great meal, atmosphere and service. One of the best spots in Des Moines
Last Sunday, I was able to try this French restaurant for brunch in downtown Des Moines while visiting some friends. Ambience: Modern French Chic Service: Very good! They just forgot to bring spoons with coffee. View: Gorgeous view of the Pappajohn's Art Park. Food: Great selection of seafood, country French to fine-dining French cuisine. We tried the duck fat fries. They were a little difficult to eat, because they were so small. They were also a little soggy from the duck fat. So it made it even more difficult to try to dip it in the sauces, or try to dip several of them with a fork into the sauces. I also tried the seafood biscuits and gravy. I knew I was trying something a little unusual. It was pretty good, I just wish it had had a little more gravy for the giant biscuits it was served with. We were a little surprised by the green color of the Crepes Lorraine, but had we read closer they did describe them as spinach crepes. I would definitely return to try their croque madame.
Always have a great meal and great service. Love that there is never a corkage fee. We always have a nice bottle of wine to drink from home and want a nice meal to go along with it. Really appreciate the new menu, the great cheese plates and of course the mussels!
Great date place. My fiancee & I have come here several times & are never disappointed. The duck frites are the best!
New location includes lower quality and higher prices. Patio seating was much quieter than indoors, but very underwhelmed after the move. Previously a 5 star establishment, the move didn't help their attractiveness.
5 years after being in Iowa for training at Nationwide Insurance I am still in raving to anyone that will listen about, “The Burger Rossini”. This burger cooked medium is guaranteed to haunt your dreams and will leave you wanting after eating any other burger... ever. I know there is already a Burger King but this burger should be labeled The Burger God. Yummm
Delicious lunch menu. Wonderful cocktails. Peaceful atmosphere. Very pleasant overlooking sculpture park.
Great food, terrific service. Noisier than I like (72db average).
I really liked Django. Service was prompt but unobtrusive. Food was very well prepared. Blackened Ahi sandwich was great. Wife's ham and cheese was outstanding. If I ever return to des Moines I will certainly revisit
Great service, loved the patio.
Python based web developers should love the name. This is a good place. Feels more formal than other places in Des Moines. Great for a business meeting.
HEARTBROKEN that this location has closed. It was a special place. But the owners promise that the same wonderful, talented team who made Django so unique - a genuinely unpretentious French bistro in the heart of Iowa - WILL be back in a new location within a few months. I can't WAIT!!!
Delicious and creative plates!
The previous location was a much better ambiance but the food is still good. They need a better beer selection and the oyster bar is noticably missing as compared to the old location.
Complimentary samples by the door. We had great service and food. Our waiter, Todd M, even offered cold towels because we were hot from the 90+ degree walk there.
Discovered this place last month and have ordered lunch from them several times since. Last week I ordered my usual and it was awful. The sandwich was barely cooked and my sprouts weren't chopped up properly and tasted awful. This place is way too expensive for such a mistake. I will not be returning anytime soon.
Decent. Good prices for certain. A little awkward walking through the kitchen to get to the restrooms.
Took my wife here for the first time to celebrate her birthday, we were seated along a wall upstairs right in between three larger parties that were yelling at each other from everywhere at their tables. Even just walking in the front door the restaurant is very loud, which is understandable to a point. Service at our table was fine. Unfortunately, the food was not. My wife ordered the macaroni and cheese which we both liked, I ordered a steak with scallops. The steak was served with a mound of barely warm fries, and the scallops (2 for $10) were almost burnt on one side and lightly seared on the other. The steak was just downright disappointing.
New location- same great food and service.
Seafood, burgers, drinks. The best poutine in Des Moines.
Thank you Alexa J for amazing service beautiful and delicious meal ! (Recommend the salmon) Love the new location and patio atmosphere ! We will be back
They had Toppling Goliath beer...
Visited the new location over lunch today. I was disappointed that Django isn't want it used to be. Whilst the food was good, over half the menu was either burgers, sandwiches, or some combination plate which you get a half of their Mac and cheese with a soup/salad. There was little to nothing "uniquely french" on the menu. Perhaps the dinner menu has more variety. I would be disappointed to see a place that had bouillabaisse on the menu not serve that in favour of burgers and fries.
The best food in Des Moines!
As always, the food was superb and the waiter was very attentive! Definitely one of my top 5 restaurants.
I like the new location, very noisy due to acoustic issues. Food is just as good as before, portions a little bit more manageable .
I’ve enjoyed coming here in the past and today I took my family to celebrate my dad for Father’s Day. Both my plate and my moms were way too salty. Honestly I hate to complain and it took a while to get our food so I didn’t want to have them make it again. I tried to get through it but ended up leaving half of my dish. The water helped but wish that had not been the case. I’m someone who usually ads salt to my meals even after cooked so for me to say it was too salty takes a lot. So I wasn’t too happy especially since it’s not the cheapest...& of course I still tipped our waiter, it wasn’t his fault. However I do feel that for the price and location such things shouldn’t happen.
Great food and service
Nice sit down place to grab a bite. Decent vegetarian options as well!
The service, the food, and the price were all great. Went with my sister, her husband, my niece, my nephew, my cousin, and my girlfriend. We all enjoyed the meal. When they brought out the appetizer, my girlfriend mentioned how she wished she picked a different side; the staff overheard and changed it for her. This spot is great for savory and sweet. I also liked the movie Django Unchained. Ha... if you’re in Des Moines, go to Django!
Great food and service. We enjoyed every moment.
Food is good but not really French.
When visiting Des Moines, Django's is a must. Great food and service! Never a bad time had!
We arrived early and were told that someone was sitting in the seat we had reserved for 6pm. We sat at the bar and had drinks while we waited. Meanwhile, we watched as several other people with 6pm reservations be seated immediately. Well after 6pm we asked the host how much longer the wait would be, as we had theater tickets. We were told the people at our table were still eating and they did not know how long it would be. After inquiring several more times, we decided to just order our dinner at the bar. I told the the host that I would not reserve a seat here ever again. At that point we were given a table, but were already discouraged with the restaurant. We will not be going back.
No corkage fee, great bread, yummy duck frites. Yes yes yes.
Nice food and ambience
Great food... no corking fee
Very busy, very loud due to Tuesday all night happy hour but we were very well taken care of by Clint. Friendly, but not overly so. Effecient and professional.
I just didn’t really like any of the food. Service was great, atmosphere was cool, but the food was underwhelming.
Always great service and even better food. Nothing we have had has ever been even sub par.
Way, way too noisy. Food was good, as was the service, but could not hear people at my table.
We've eaten at Django quite often, but at the former location. This new location we will be visiting very soon. No matter, whenever you can choose a restaurant, not matter which special occasion it is or no matter which special guest is in town, it says a lot about the quality of food and service. And that is Django's. It is exceptional in every way. The food is superior because they pay attention to the details. We have dined at Django's as a couple, with family, with friends and for business reasons. I have never had a bad experience or chosen a dish I thought was of lesser quality than the previous times. Drinks are cold and well made. The wine is also for fine dining.
Alexa was a great waitress. Someone in our party couldn't have alcohol in their food and she went above and beyond to make sure it didn't. The food was excellent. The Scallops are great. We will be going back.
This Django is such a nice place with awesome food.
I came with a fairly good sized group of people, and we were promptly seated. However our server, Kristen, was one of the worst servers I have ever had. Every member of our group happens to work in the restaurant industry- from servers and managers to cooks and chefs. We were very understanding that a large group can be somewhat difficult to deal with so we were very polite and patient with her. However she was very short and impatient with us for no apparent reason. Each interaction with her grew more uncomfortable and unwelcoming. The food wasn't bad, but the poor hospitality (or lack thereof) that we were shown ruined the experience as a whole. As industry professionals we all appreciate honest guest feedback. I hope this young woman takes hospitality more seriously in the future.
Food was tasty. Ambiance was nice.
Excellent food and service...place tobe
If not the best restaurant in DSM, it is top 3. The scallops with lobster mashed potatoes is my favorite dinner item. They have the best brussel sprouts.
Great location albeit a bit tricky to find a parking space. Oysters and croque monsieur were delicious as always.
Great service and great food time and times again.
The new location has definitely not changed the great food and service.
Great happy hour, awesome wait staff
Lunch: First impressing was good. I really liked the shrimp pasta. My favorite pasta in Des Moines, but this is only on the lunch menu. Only downside is that the wait time (to take order, bill) is too long. Wouldn't go if I'm in a rush. Dinner: Went twice for dinner. Didn't like the food. Every bite of the seafood in the photo just tastes like carrots. I also ordered seafood crepes. It tastes better, but too greasy. Wouldn't go again for dinner.
Fantastic food and service!
Great food but a bit pricey.
Great atmosphere - delicious food.
Great food and great service
Delicious food and drinks with a very friendly staff. The seafood biscuits and gravy were amazing!
Excellent food and service!
Absolutely awesome! French inspired question. Burgers including Le Royal with cheese, fancy Mac and cheese options, meat and cheese tray, and all the fancy French food you could want. It is our special place for family birthdays and anniversaries. HIGHLY recommend.
Delicious food, though l miss a few menu items from the prior location. As for ambiance, better sound baffling would help dinner conversation.
Oh how I long for the old Django. It was my favorite restaurant. Can’t stand the new location, went again tonight hoping for a change. The food is not near the same and you can’t hear yourself think, way to loud. The setting is that of a cheap pizza joint. And someone please tell the cook that you never serve a Mussel who’s shell isn’t open.
Meh. Good food/decor, but, if I have to sit in my husband's lap to converse and the servers can't hear my order, then it is not a GREAT date night destination.
My steak was cooked perfect and of high quality !
This is such a beautiful place to be, the atmosphere is relaxed af for being a fancy pants kind of place. I got the vegan gnocchi and it was really super tasty, but the portion was almost laughable. If I wouldn't have gotten fries afterwards I would have still left hungry... and I know I'm kind of a fat bish, so maybe this is just me being used to larger portions... but it didn't seem like the other dishes that were brought to the table were tiny. Just me? Who knows. Also I'm not positive if the fries are vegan, after I ate them I realized it didn't say that they were (everything else vegan was noted it was/was not). My fault for not asking, I'm not saying anything negative, but it's probably worth asking if you have an allergy. Our reservation was at 7:45 - we didn't get food until 9, I dunno, I guess I'm kind of accustomed to shorter wait times, and I'm not really bent out of shape about it because I was with good company. The server was a really nice guy, and good service without being in your face. So I got gnocchi, some fries, and I drank water and the check (with 20% gratuity due to a larger group) was $34. That's not crazy unreasonable, but just on the more expensive side. I'm not dying to go back or anything, but it was tasty and I love that they have more than one vegan option (and not a BS vegan option, either). Another person in my group got the veggie burger and it looked awesome.
Always a solid place for brunch. The service can't be beat and I love the no corkage fee for mixing my own mimosas!
Frenchie
Great food, it's unique and we'll presented, while still tasting amazing. Atmosphere is nice big bank of open windows though the upstairs seating seems a bit dark.
Great food, Nice atmosphere, more upscale then casual
The food was good as usual... but service is an issue from seating my 86 yr old Mother upstairs, to service being so slow that my 1 1/2 hr parking meter expired and I got a ticket. ( 2 plus hours for a light dinner) But worst of all was the noise level ... we had to yell throughout dinner to converse... this has gone from my favorite Dsm restaurant to one I won’t soon come back to.
Great place for dinner.
Great atmosphere....and good food...serves some of the classics!!
I love the expanded menu at the new location
One of my favorite restaurants in town. Always Amazing food and service! So happy that they have reopened in their new location.
Overall a very classy place. Seating was nice and tables are separated enough to have quiet conversations. Service was good not great as the matress appeared to have more customers than she could handle. The menu was typical of French Cuisine and a bit hard to follow. Food arrived hot and in a timely manner. Overall experience was exceptional and would recommend it .
Great food and atmosphere.
Best scallops I have ever had.
Amazing .... the Royale with Cheese
Great food atmosphere and service
Wow great place, come for joy of the foid
A must try if you've never been. Amazing food and service.
Food is always good. I'm a fan of their shellfish plates and poutine. Only reason not five stars is it can get very loud when busy, but don't let it keep you away.
The French Toast dessert is to die for. I also have never had a bad meal or service there. It's Da Bomb!
Always wonderful! The staff really take pride in excellent service. The food never disappoints.
