I would recommend being nicely dressed if you decide to go here. The music is hit or miss to me personally. They played electronic music woven in with more relaxing music. The interior is very clean and well kept both downstairs and upstairs. I think this would be a solid choice for a lunch or dinner date from first impressions.

Had a great experience here. Mac and cheese was recommended and it was on point. I also had a cup of the gumbo and it was delicious. It may be some time before I return but I really want to try some other menu items. I would highly recommend.

Cool design and setup. I went there with a group and we had excellent service. They have an expansive whiskey selection. Biggest complaint is sad they kept serving us drinks in dirty glasses.

Been here a few times. The fried chicken was pretty good, but there was some spice/seasoning in it that I didn't like, but might not bother other. The Dr. Pepper ribs were good. Thought the bananas Foster was also good.

This is a PERFECT place to take a date. Its classy but not too classy where it feels stuffy. It has a historic throwback feel with the exposed brick and decor The food was very yummy! Great portion sizes, and I highly recommend the ice box dessert. This is a pretty pricey place so if you are on a tight budget you might want to pass. All in all I really enjoyed my time here. The servers also wear darling uniforms that tie into the vibe. It is wheel chair accessible but it is a little tight so I would shy away from peak hrs.

My wife and i went here for dinner before a show we were attending. Grossly overpriced on all of there food. I ordered a bubba burger ($13.99) my wife had the two piece chicken ($15.99) the food was extremely salty almost like putting a handful of table salt in your mouth. The burger was extremely greasy, the grease literally ran off the burger and left a layer of grease in my to go box. Truly happy when it was over yuck.

Saw another review saying the chicken fried steak was better than what Texas had to offer. After living in Texas for a few years I thought that was a pretty bold statement.. but i was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the chicken fried steak with green beans and asparagus, everything tasted great. The steak was excellent and the gravy was some of the best I've had, Texas or otherwise. I also ordered a few Manhattan's and both were made very well. I was in town for two weeks on business and had ordered Manhattan's at other restaurants downtown, these were made the best and made by someone who actually knew how to make a Manhattan (dying skill). Ashley our server was very fast and on top of our drinks/food. Couldn't have asked for better food or service. I'll be back next time I'm in town and recommend it to other co-workers.

GO EAT HERE. Went to Bubba tonight with my boyfriend after having not visited in a bit (busy schedules) but was reminded of why we always come back. The service was excellent and the food was even better (their vegan burger is my favorite in DSM!) Definitely won’t wait as long to visit again.

This is a really unique place with really good food. The environment was clean and friendly. The decor was very nice and gave the place a nice relaxing atmosphere. The selection of food was refreshing and allows the opportunity to involve many different types of eaters to be satisfied. Would highly recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a wonderful evening.

The ambience is ok but the food is chancy. You only get 4 shrimp on a poboy. That's not southerly. Should have been at least 6 for the size of the bun. The greens taste like vinegar and had not much ham hock or flavor. The seasoning of the chicken was great but overcooked. The sweet potatoes were stringy and not flavored. No cornbread for that Southern style. Bubba is clearly not Creole but Cajun. I left hungry and full of gas for $60.00. Will not return. I should gone to Fat Tuesday's for good Southern cuisine and good Southern portions.

This is the second time I have visited Bubba's and I like the decor, but it is very loud when it is busy. Keep that in mind for conversation levels. Stopped in for lunch with 7 other co-workers. Waitress was knowledgeable, polite, and prompt. However, it took approximately 45 minutes to get our lunch. We were not that large of a group, but this seems excessive for lunch. This is definitely not an in and out kind of place. I ordered the meatloaf with a side of Mac and Cheese. The meatloaf was flavorful and the bits of beef would crumble, I think my toast was a little over done, but overall it is a very good dish. The Mac and Cheese was good, but I was expecting a little more flavor with the spices it had in it. Overall I enjoyed the food, but too slow for lunch.

Delicious! As a southerner, I was more than satisfied with this place. The pimento macaroni and cheese was to die for! Highly recommended! My boyfriend ordered the catfish which he mowed down in a heartbeat. I'm also an avid bourbon drinker, and asked for a recommendation from the waitress. She was more than happy to make a suggestion, which turned out to be too notch. Pricing wasn't bad either! Definitely get your money's worth. I will definitely be back my next time in Des Moines!

Food was great, but surprised to see the service reviews here. We had two very uninterested and inattentive bartenders who were unable to wait on 6 people at the bar. I used attention I finally got to ask for silverware for the guy next to me after he sat there for 5 minutes looking at his salad. My date felt terrible for the kitchen delivering the best, when the servers leave three empty glasses and plates in front of someone for an hour.

Second visit and this place is perfection. The food (fried chicken and shrimp and grits) were both exceptional. The mac and cheese is a very necessary side it is amazing! The only complaint was the waffle on the bananas foster could have been a little more done but that sauce! OMG! Worth every calorie.

Their food was fantastic! I would have to say the gumbo was better than any gumbo I've had in LA. Red beans and rice was drier than I am used to but packed with so many flavors I didn't care. So many choices it was impossible to choose what we wanted. But loved what we settled on. The service was outstanding. Can't wait to go again and try something else.

Not all of it was what I would consider southern (some of it was cowboy or Texas which technically is south but not southern like the food style is).

On the corner of Mulbery and 10th. This is another great downtown eatery. Bubba offers upscale southern comfort food. My wife had a version of the chicken pot pie and I had the three piece fried chicken, make it hot. The sauce had a nice kick to it. It's hard to eat fried chicken though and do so with any sort of grace and etiquette. It comes with a side of mashed potatoes which were flavorful and my choice of two other side. I chose the vegetables and pimento mac & cheese. I enjoyed the mac & cheese. Overall a good experience that I would do again.

Great place. I highly recommend the biscuit basket as an appetizer. They have the best whiskey selection in the area. The meatloaf, salads, chicken, and waffles are all really good, but I would not order the short ribs again as the sauce is weird. The atmosphere is wonderful and not too loud; I prefer the upper seating area if given a choice. Service is always great.

Overall great food and great experience We came at an off time (4 PM) so no waiting at all. There was only one other couple in the whole place. The host, for some reason, led us to the table with a bench seat right next to them! So close we could touch elbows. Uh...no. I asked to be moved which he did with a roll of his eyes. With this start, my expectations were not high. However, things got waaaaay better. Our waiter was top notch and gave helpful recommendations. The deviled egg appetizers were fantastic. Great selections on the menu. Our meals were delicious. Loved the decor. We look forward to going back.

So I am a born and raised Texan, this food is an amazing take on many items I grew up eating. The service is 9/10 times great. We often go with a big group and my mother in law is in a wheelchair, they have always put us in appropriate accommodations. Very nice ambiance and excellant service. A very tempting menue with true Southern cuisine. And they had real sweet tea ( none of that " oh, you can just add sugar" nonsense). My wife had very tasty chicken crock pie and I had the blackened cat fish skillet. Both very tasty. Then we had desert - the pecan pie was very full of pecans with just enough filling to hold it all together (and not so overly sweet as pecan pie often tends to be) with just a pleasant dash of bourbon flavour. The brownie and ice creame was also delicious and certainly with a homemade flavour and soft texture. Very good Southern style fixins with a bit of more midwestern sophistication ( very appealing food presentation and no plastic utensils and paper towels with wood bench seats and plastic checkered table cloths). AND a very pleasant and unexpected experience so far up North for those of us firmly gastronomically embedded in the South. Bravo Bubba - wish y'all well and will return if ever back in DM!

Love this place, second vist was just as good as the furst. Our server, Fox, was steller. Spot on with drinks and suggestions for the 2 in our party who hadn't been before. The food was delicious and plentiful. The deviled eggs are worth the trip alone.only regret them not having the chicken fried steak on the lunch menu but with the plethora of other dishes it is a very very minor thing.

TripAdvisor was very helpful for finding this place. Part of the Orchestrate Hospitality group, Bubba features fresh and playful cocktails, a number of creative starters, sandwiches, mains, and sides with a southern theme, along with an exhaustive bourbon list and knowledgeable staff to help make choices. We chose a high table in the bar area. We ordered an Old Fashioned made with Woodford Reserve Double Oak, a house cocktail called the Leather and Tobacco to start, then ordered some small plates, including deviled eggs, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, pulled pork sliders on biscuits, and a bowl of gumbo. It was a great way to sample a whole lot of flavor without getting too full. For dessert we split a slice of Buttermilk Pie and had neat glasses of Blood Oath and Blanton's alongside. The whole experience was worth every penny of our $130 check (before 20% tip). We look forward to getting to Des Moines again soon and Bubba will be on our list of places to visit.

Split the chicken fried steak and let me just say, mind blowing. Whether you’re in the mood for southern comfort food or probably one of the best hangover dishes, I would order this again any day! Highly recommend and this won’t be our last time in!

I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken, and collard greens and roasted veggies as my sides. This was very well prepared and the atmosphere was fantastic. The only reason this is 4 stars (not 5) is an experience asking to change table outside due to wind. We asked to move out of the wind and the hostess didn't want to move us (8 feet away) because that would be another server's section. Guests don't care about the establishment's internal seating policy... we just want to be treated well and catered to.

I don't know what this place is trying to pull. I ordered what I thought was enough food for one person and they brought enough for four people. And it all tasted incredible. And the prices were great, and there was a huge selection of scotch and whiskey. Can't wait to go back!

My friends and I came without a reservation. So we waited for a place around the bar area and sat at the lounge area on the couches. When I tell you I have never in my life been waiting on by such a terrible waitress... the restaurant was very busy. Which is totally understandable for a weekend. She was extremely rude and condescending.. as if we weren’t dressed properly, or couldn't afford to be in such a place. It took over 30 min to get 4 drinks. With the restaurant being so busy, I’ve never seen someone in the food industry move at such a glacial pace. Almost on purpose. Then she finally gave us a menu we had asked for upon arriving. We had been waiting so long that we just told her we were going to go elsewhere for a bite to eat. She then proceeds to tell us “not to even try going anywhere without a reservation in town, and to call ahead before we attempt to go anywhere in town due to various events.” We are all very active in town and know what is going on... downtown was not very busy last night. It was just a very uncomfortable experience with her and I wish I had gotten her name. We don’t get downtown very often as we all live in the waukee/ Jordan creek area... big disappointment as the atmosphere and menu here looked pretty good.

She made suggestions and owned her product, "I love our eggs!". ..and she was right, the deviled eggs were amazing. As was the New York strip and carmelized potatoes! You could dress up for a formal evening or dress down to meet with friends here

Can't go wrong here. Pricey but you can expect everything you order to be made to perfection. Menu has a wide variety of southern favorites. The chicken and waffles is particularly good. One of the most enjoyable aspects is the atmosphere. It's lively but also subdued enough that you can carry on a conversation at the table without shouting. Service is excellent. Definitely one of the best spots in Des Moines.

The food and service were superb. A little on the pricey side, but it's what you'd expect with such exceptional quality. On the downside, their website doesn't give you any instructions about where you can park. My husband and I drove there separately and found open meters several blocks away. We apparently didn't plug enough money into them and didn't want to jump up in the middle of our $50 dinners to sprint several blocks and feed more money into them, so we each got a $15 parking ticket to add to the bill for the evening. For that reason, there are literally hundreds of other restaurants in the metro area that suddenly become much more appealing. Bubba, if you have any better options for parking, update your website and tell us where. If not, then my question for the city of Des Moines is why are you doing this to your local businesses when it's after 6:00 pm?

Stopped on way thru town for a nice lunch and this place was fabulous. Southern eats kicked up just a notch. Charcuterie board was fantastic and could have fed 2-3 people itself (the biscuit was my addition). Kids loved their food too and service was excellent.

Love the decor, cool warehouse vibe. Awesome service, we had a group of 20 and our server was on it. Also- - -The. Best. Mac. And. Cheese. EVER. I'm a grown woman and never order mac and cheese, but ended up eating some (ok, most) of my daughter's. Seriously, I would order this as a full dish next time. The menu has mostly southern classics and everyone else was raving about everything. Great job Bubba!

Even though we had a large party we still had great service. Very friendly staff. We tried 6 different appetizers and they were all excellent. Especially the mac and cheese bites. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was great. Not too greasy and nice seasoning. The waffle was huge and delicious with the honey butter. Had the whiskey pecan pie for dessert. The food is great but the poor service makes us not want to return and warn our family and friends to steer clear of this establishment. The first time this happened, my family and I had family visiting from out of the area. The server behaved as if they were being forced to assist us. Short and dry with their language and very unwelcoming. We went back yesterday and were equally disappointed with the service. Our server did not greet us, she was also very unwelcoming and she barely uttered a word.

Had it delivered, so I can't speak to the restaurant or service. I can say that the buttermilk fried chicken was burned. I don't kniw if they overcooked it, haven't changed the oil in sometime or if this is what they consider quality. This maybe an isolated case but I've had better fried chicken from Popeye's. The side though were great but really nothing special. I understand that the concept is fine dining soul or comfort food but they fell short on both and the price didn't match the product.

Quick service. I had ordered from Grub Hub last week and decided to visit the brick and mortar. I had a Mint Chocolate Julep, side salad and Chicken Crock dinner. Like the chicken I ordered from Grub Hub, I felt the dish was too salty but still good. A little on the expensive side - with tip, I paid $35.

What a wonderful experience! We tried Bubba's for the first time and will definitely be coming back. Everything we had was absolutely amazing. Wings and deviled eggs, catfish, bbq meatloaf, Bubba burger, fried chicken, mac and cheese, parmesan fries and brussel sprouts... all were AMAZING! Our waitress was top notch and gave us fabulous recommendations. Keep up the great work.

Every time we are in Des Moines this place is a must. The food is fantastic. Where can you get frog legs in Iowa?!?! The drinks are hand crafted. Highly recommend.

The food was pretty good. However, the service experience was very odd. My cousin and myself were cut off from ordering drinks because we were laughing before we ordered a drink. We seriously thought it was a joke! It killed the whole vibe of the night, and we did not even have anything to drink before. Apparently they don’t like people having a good time at their restaurant? Not sure I will go back.

Were seated at a high-top right next to the bar. Sat for 10 minutes before the bartender finally made her way to our table. We ordered our drinks & she rushed right into us ordering our food. We didn't mind much since we had already been sitting for awhile. Fast forward another ten minutes & she brings the soda we ordered, but not my water. Finally after another seven minutes of watching the bartender, as it seems, not really do much besides change the channel on the tv & drink her root beer float. The bar was full of past customer's dirty dishes & I watched a customer ask her to clear the bar so he could sit down. Seems silly she didn't do that before since this is kinda a nicer establishment. Finally, my boyfriend just decided to go ask someone else for a water. The bartender finally makes her way towards us with a tray of thr people's wine/waters that were sitting behind, when they were sat like twenty minutes after us. THEN SHE HAD THE AUDACITY TO WALK PASSED US & GO, "I already dropped off a water. Cool" like we had to tell her she in fact didn't drop off that water, but we were tired of waiting for it. We finally get our food. It was very yummy food, but nothing extravagant. Maybe the service just put me off. Oh. Also, we ordered a bread basket & never got it. The second I put my napkin on the table to indicate I was done with my food, the bartender was at our table so fast with the tab. The fastest I saw her move during the whole time I was there. Never once asked us for refills. Never checked on us. Nothing. I also want to point out that there was a party seated , but it seemed as if all their waitstaff was waiting on the one party & the waitstaff just seemed to all be so unenthused to be there. Needless to say, I won't be back there.

Nice lunch. Went in with a group of about 10 for lunch. We had a reservation so I was surprised that they hadn't put tables together prior to our arrival. They remedied that quickly though. Service was really good for a table of our size. Food all came out at once and I got several drink refills. I had the Southern Protein Bowl because I wanted something on the healthier side. Most of the delicious looking southern fare they serve doesn't really fit the bill. Although the protein bowl didn't not seem like an together cohesive dish, I appreciated the effort to give me something besides plain salad with chicken breast (which they also have if you are less adventurous and not willing to break the calorie bank). I will return when I'm in the mood to do live it up. The bread basket looked delicious.

After living in the south for 6 years, 2 of which in Charleston, SC, this place is southern food. It took my wife and I back to the home feeling service and atmosphere you expect from a southern restaurant and the food was as if we were back there. The bread basket was a great starter while the fried green tomatoes lacked a bold flavor as we were used to. The roumelade sauce did add a burst a flavor the add to the tomatoes though. They have delicious sweet tea and a very nice and large bourbon selection along with other liquor and cocktail options. The fried chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful. The mashed potatoes it’s served with are skin in and not overly garlic filled. The asparagus and roasted veggies were cooked wonderfully and great flavor. The cole slaw was thicker slices giving it a wholesome feel. We ended with the bourbon bananas foster and pecan pie. They did not disappoint. All in all, it will take down south minus the southern draw and makes you feel at home as well.

Really enjoyed Bubba both times we went. The drinks are some of the best in the metro. The food, while maybe not fully authentic southern food, is delicious and definitely uses southern flavors well. We will be coming back.

First visit won't be my last! Delicious dishes and perfectly mixed drinks. Chicken & waffles was better than I could've imagined. Their fried chicken is RIGHT. Shrimp po' boy was SO GOOD and had the best slaw I've ever tasted. Even the mashed potatoes were another level. You can tell that there is a chef here who cares about the food! Polished southern favorites done to perfection. Totally worth trying.
