This is a quaint little diner with a retro feel. We sat in the outdoor seating area which was small (including the approximately 2'x2' table my wife and I ate at. The food was great, I had pancakes which werent super fluffy, but had a great texture and taste (they were somewhat sweet). My wife had cinnamon roll French toast which really was a cinnamon roll that was baked and then turned into 1" thick French toast (it was SO good that I had to steal a few bites!).

Hate to say it oh man i really do... Food was amazing but some of the servers are displaying a very negative attitude. I even saw a very short hispanic waitress saying very rude things to one of the male customers this morning. I just dont understand how there could be such terrible things said in the world we live in today. They must be trump supporters... 5/5 if you bring ear plugs and dont mind nasty servers.

Wonderful little diner slightly off the beaten path. Very delicious and a wide variety of options. While they are typically known for the breakfast, we decided to have lunch today. I got the pork tenderloin sandwich with fries, which was pretty tasty. The dining area was busy but that is to be expected at lunch as its well known among the locals. I would recommend giving this place a try. Its definitely not a chain restaurant.

They offer a wide variety of options for breakfast. Truffles and eggs and eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce are options. The gravy on the chicken fried steak has too much smoke flavoring. The Blue Bird special is the standard eggs, meat, hashbrowns and toast. The ham steak is lean and very tasty. The staff is friendly and very helpful.

We had the pleasure of eating at Blue Bird Dinerfor breakfast .My son had the steak and egg omelet with hashbrowns and wheat toast .Ihad biscuits and gravy platter with hashbrowns and eggs ,sausage Patty's were delicious but the gravy not very good looked like hamburger gravy .I can see back in the kitchen and one cook had a 6 inch beard not covered up with beard not then I saw him wipe his forehead with his hand I hope he washed his hands. Service was great

Delicious modern diner food! Went for lunch while visiting our son on his recommendation. What a great idea! The special of the day was a crab cake po boy that my husband said everything was fresh with a well seasoned crab cake. I ordered the Tenderloin and it was a contender for one of Iowa's best. Their menu has many choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Highly recommend

My daughter, son, and I tried it tonight for the 1st time and it won't be the last. It was delicious. My daughter and son both had breakfast and raved about it. Stopped by today for Saturday. The food was fine. No complaints . The service on the other hand was beyond horrible. That's why only 3 stars. Our server was completely oblivious. Once we got our meal she never returned to check on the food or refilled our drinks. She couldn't have cared less. It's not like the place was busy either. Just completely disinterested in doing her job.

I had the Mile High Omelet. You really can't screw up an omelet. But my friend had the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. Holy cow is that delicious! Add a little butter and your good! It is lightly sweet and doesn't need syrup! I wish I had gotten that instead! Very good and very friendly staff, my only bit of sadness is I was only in town for a conference!

Great food, great service. The crab cakes on the Benedict we're wonderful (as well as the rest of it). Everything was prompt, and our server was very polite and pleasant. Our mimosa and bloody Mary were both good (we we're not blown away but they were both plenty good). We will be back to try the lunch options soon!

Avoid this location. North Liberty Bluebird is ran much better and efficiently. People standing around at this location doing nothing while there's only two servers for the whole restaurant. It took 25 minutes for a shot of espresso. An hour and a half for food at 1:30 on a Sunday when the place was only half full. The food quality is always lackluster here in comparison with that of the North Liberty location. I will never be coming back to this location.

If you actually manage to get the staff to serve you a menu or food it's actually quite good. Just make sure you schedule at least half an hour extra just to wait around for one of their wait staff to actually come around to your table

Had an excellent breakfast. Got a very good egg sandwich full of sauteed vegetables and flavorful sauce. The portion sizes are generous. The atmosphere is relaxed and the servers are polite. Lots of big windows for a good street view. A great place to eat all round.

In downtown Iowa City. A cute little diner. Limited seating. Outside sitting area. I ordered crab cakes. It came out burnt and dried. I did not complain. Shouldn't have to. A mediocre presentation. (See photo) I was expecting better. Also ordered a grilled cheese with NO fries. I got fries. I am willing to pay more for properly prepared food. But this was mediocre at best. I would like to try again. And try something new. But I'll have to see. Disappointing.

If you're looking for traditional diner fare, keep looking, because despite the decor, this is not your traditional diner. The menu is definitely yuppified and very trendy. The food is quite good, though a bit on the expensive side, and you'll need to feed a parking meter.

3 out 5 stars, not because of the service, it was the food for me. Both my boyfriend and I were not amazed with the food. My food was too greasy and the description did not match what was received. It was just "okay". The service from the waiter/waitresses as well as how quickly the food came was exceptional though. I think if they improved on the quality of food, I would be much more inclined to give a 5 star for sure.

Ordered cheese burger and Cuban. Burger was over done and dry Cuban was good. There were only 5 groups eating and our waitress was too busy chatting with other waitresses and drinking to notice that we were done. After 15 minutes had to take the few steps to her and ask to pay.

Bluebird diner has been a staple in Iowa City. Been a couple years since had been there. Wife ordered club sandwich and I had a Cuban. Each with fries. Both sandwiches were huge and tasty. Both with layers of meat and the Cuban with homemade mustard relish which made it difficult to hold. Wife could not finish hers but I had to finish this eight napkin killer sandwich. Peeling on fries were terrific as well.

Our group got lucky and arrived between breakfast and lunch on a weekday. There was a bit of a wait and the entrance is tiny. I have a service dog and it was a little tight getting him through the restaurant and settled under a small booth, but the staff helped identify the best available spot for us. The food was delicious and unique which is what I hoped for. The sausage gravy was smoky and delicious, the hamburger smelled amazing with lots of juices trapped inside, the macaroni and cheese was plentiful and delicious. Service was prompt and friendly even though they seemed a bit stressed getting to everyone. I’d really like to give them 4.5 stars.

Family and I went here for dinner. I got the toadstool sandwich. It was tasty, but I had 2 problems with it. 1. The sandwich and fries were lukewarm. I suspect this is because there were only two servers and they had a lot of customers (nearly 2/3 of the diner was full!) and the food cooled down while they were serving other people. I don't blame those servers at all, but the owner of the establishment should hire more people for evening hours. 2. The sandwich, while yummy, was overstuffed so I couldn't close it and had to use a fork and knife, which is not my preferred way of eating sandwiches. But this can easily be remedied by requesting fewer toppings. The servers were kind, attentive, and prompt (at least as humanely possible) and the food was good otherwise. Would visit again.

Fantastic place!!! We went for breakfast. It was very busy but they got our party of 6 in very quickly. The staff were very nice, friendly and attentive. The food was outstanding. Highlights included the biscuits and gravy which included a full sausage patty on each biscuit and great tasting gravy. The food was hot and came out in a good time. The Popeye Omelet was great as well. We will definitely come back when we are in town.

I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and went to Bluebird Diner on October 30th, 2018. This is a restaurant I have always loved and occasionally frequented. On this particular morning, there were several empty tables which meant there was no wait time. I asked the waitress for any gluten free options and she notified me that the cooks refuse to take extra precautions to prevent cross contamination, such as changing utensils or changing their gloves. I asked her to speak with the cooks directly, which she did, and they reconfirmed what she told me before. Therefore, I was unable to order anything off the menu, even when they indicate "gluten-free" next to some of their food items. Staff was very unfriendly and unwilling to make accommodations for me. Therefore, I will NEVER return and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone with food allergies.

When I come here its usually for breakfast or brunch, but they also serve lunch and dinner. They have delicious omelettes. My partner always gets the cinnamon roll french toast (made from massive cinnamon rolls) or pancakes. You can add anything to the omelettes or pancakes, sweet or savory. The service is always fast and the waitstaff is kind and attentive. Standard diner coffee, but you can order espresso drinks, juices or breakfast cocktails. For lunch or dinner, the Bluechetta is my go-to. Full bar in the evening. The atmosphere is comfortable and casual with a funky fun vibes. Great for a date or just hanging out with friends and family.

Was at seminar over last weekend. Stopped at Bluebird Diner for breakfast because of ratings on line. The food and service was so good and friendly, we stopped back Sunday morning again. Coffee was some of the best I've had. We would recommend this to anyone looking for quick, delicious food and clean and very friendly atmosphere.

Not one to post bad reviews, but I was a served a rotten--yes, rotten--avocado on my Cobb salad. When I asked for it to be replaced, it was replaced with another rotten avocado. The tomatoes and mushrooms were also on their way out, and we waited 25 minutes for our orders to be taken at a not-very-busy-time while staff seemed unconcerned and unrushed. I used to love going here, but I won't be back.

This place is small and quaint. I really enjoyed having breakfast here. Even though on the weekend it was busy, it was worth the wait. I would reccomend for brunch: - Eggs Benedict with crab cakes or salmon, I really loved both so I couldnt decide!

Favorite IC breakfast! I mean amazing! Already looking forward to the next time I go from Chicago area to see my student daughter there... I’ll b getting that awesome salmon omelette! Have always had great service, Gotten in quick & gotten parking! Really lucky cuz this place is soo good, it really fills up!

It can’t get any better. We arrived at peak lunch hour and got a seat, food was delivered timely, hot, perfect. Gourmet tasty and great value. Breakfast all day. Super coffee.

Bluebird diner has unequalled efficient and friendly staff. The waitresses worked as a team to greet, serve and check on guests. But what really stood out was how responsive, genuinely caring and professional when they were dealing with an emotional, demanding, rude, angry loud woman with two children both of whom appeared embarrassed and startled by their guardian's inappropriate conduct of using profanity and repeatedly slamming a carryout bowl of soup on the counter. The waitress apologized for the food not meeting the woman's standards, respectfully offered the owner's contact information and continued to be helpful, pleasant and friendly despite the woman's threats and disrespect. This waitress demonstrated strong character, a loving heart and authentic concern for the woman and her family. After the customer left, the waitress quickly transitioned back to waiting on other customers with the same poise, positivity and enthusiasm that eased the tension in the room. The food was delicious and my 3 friends and I will definitely make a return trip to the Bluebird Diner.

I've been here for breakfast twice now, both times were great! The friendly atmosphere and great food makes this a hotspot for breakfast and lunch on the weekends. The wait when we went at 10 am on a Sunday was around 25 minutes. Definitely worth the wait!
