First time coming here and won't be the last. The restaurant is very nice on the inside. The dinner is served family style. They are best known for their chicken. The meals come with a ton of different sides, bread, salad, main entree, and ice cream for dessert. There is no way of leaving here hungry. By far the best part is the excellent service. We had our 20 month old daughter with us and the staff so good with her. It made for a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this place.

*BEWARE* If you order chicken, MAKE SURE you count it. Yes, count your pieces of chicken. I was in a group of four people, including myself. We ordered chicken and, per usual, all of our chicken was served together on one platter. Now, each person is to get four pieces of chicken so the platter should have 16 pieces of chicken for four people. The chicken was served to us by the owner and there were only 12 pieces. We asked the owner, who served us the chicken, to count the pieces and to which he replied “I’ve never been asked to do count chicken in all my years of service”, we again asked that he count and hesitantly, he counted 12 pieces. For clarification, we asked a how many pieces of chicken is each person to receive in an order. He replied “a leg, breast, wing and thigh”, not proving us any number. Anyway that means four pieces, so we should have had 16 pieces of chicken on the platter. When we told the owner that, he went and brought us out the four additional pieces of chicken that were left off the platter. Could have been an honest mistake but just imagine how many times they are getting away with serving people less pieces than is specified for any order. Anyway the dining area is small and the decor extremely outdated. There’s no ceiling lights so if you go in the evening be prepared to eat in very dim lighting. The food tastes pretty good but after the issue with our count and the owner KNOWING, we won’t be back.

It's a nice step back into the type of restaurant that was the staple of Indy decades ago. Great fried chicken, and the sides that came with it were wonderful. Place is showing it's age a little; but, hopefully it will keep people coming in and leaving happy.

We always get enough food to make a left-over meal the next day. We eat out several nights a week and on top of everything else, feel the Iron Skillet is the best value around!

The Iron Skillet is my favorite restaurant. The owners remind me of my parents, who also owned a popular restaurant ~ always there and so appreciative whenever you visit. They have the best fried chicken, tomato juice, salad, beets, biscuits, apple butter, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, sundaes, iced tea and adult beverages. The long-time host and servers are always nice. Who wouldn't love a beautiful quaint restaurant that's been around since 1956?!

I can't say enough about this place. The food is always excellent and the service is always good. The owner is very friendly and always has a smile on. The atmosphere is cozy and warm. My wife and I love this place. We had to stop going because she was diagnosed with Celiac disease but if we could continue to eat there we happily would and I go out of my way to recommend this place because of the positive impression it has left on me.

RACE CARD PLAYED HERE! So my colored lesbian girlfriend and I are here right now Friday November 2nd 2018 at 7:45pm and we are getting ignored and placed on the backburner. I literally have been waiting for 20 minutes for a refill on my water. One waitress, swear to god, came out, looked at us for 2.5 seconds, then went to another table... I hate playing the race card but thats really how I feel right now!

Iron Skillet is a classic family-style restaurant that just does it right every time! Whatever the occasion, Ron, the owner, makes sure his staff caters to taking the best care of their customers. You will not find many modern restaurants that leave you happy amd full like this one. The Waiting staff know their stuff and always make it a pleasurable experience. The food just seems to keep coming! Make sure you leave enough room in your stomach because one delicious course after another follows the next. Finishing with a make-it-yourself sundae is the icing on the cake here and leaves your sweet tooth nothing to be desired. I couldn't say enough good about this fine restaurant!

Made reservations for 2:30pm on May 12, Mother’s Day. Called ahead and ordered 5 chicken dinners cause they recommended we do that when we made the reservation. Finally were seated at a table in the corner at 3:00pm. Our waitress shows up about 3:15pm and takes our drink order. Our waitress was not the waitress waiting on the tables near us. On each of our plates was a glass of tomato juice. When our waitress finally returned with our drinks we asked about the soup, which the menu states we get a choice of juice or soup. She tells us that on holidays all you get is tomato juice and then tells us that they end up throwing most of it away. My husband and I were there with our 3 teenage kids and none of us like tomato juice so that was disappointing. We finally get our chicken dinners around 4pm (so much for calling ahead) and that was only after speaking to the manager cause our waitress never returned after giving us our drinks. We had requested some bread and a refill of cottage cheese which we finally received at the end of our meal. The chicken and vegetables were good but over priced. After dinner we were all eagerly awaiting the ice cream sundaes with toppings. However the waitress tells us that they don’t serve those on holidays. Argh!! No where on their website does it say anything about no soup or sundaes on holidays!! Very disappointing!

I went for Thanksgiving and everything was wonderful. Great food, great service. I went back last night expecting the same great time and was unfortunately disappointed. We arrived when our reservation was set but weren't greeted for a while. The owner eventually noticed us and got our name. Then it took another 5 minutes to get seated. No big deal but then it took the server over 10 minutes to stop by and get our drink order. She then brought the beets and cottage cheese but never brought menus. The owner stopped by and asked if we had menus and then brought them over. When the food came, I asked for a coffee refill and it took over 30 minutes. I still tipped very well because I'm a server, but the service just really turned me off. The food was okay but very salty. The first time I went was five stars. Last night was one and a half at best, so I'll give them three.

Took my family of 4 for the first time. We enjoyed the family style serving. We ordered one steak and 3 orders of fried chicken. On the table was a wedge salad none of were big fans of the dressing. It seemed like the dressing was poured in the bottom of the bowl and then the lettuce was put in in wedges. The cottage cheese and beets were cold and flavorful. Part of the dinner was biscuits with applebutter which was also good. The fried chicken and green beans were great. The corn and mashed potatoes were good. Ice cream with your choice of 4 different sauces was dessert. The server was polite and cheerful.

This has been a "special occasion" restaurant all of my life. This is try of my dad too, so I guess it's a very special place to my family. We come here for our birthdays and always leave happy and uncomfortably full! The food is absolutely wonderful as is the service. I would love to see them do some updating to the decor, as it's been exactly the same for decades, but the quality of their food has also been the same -- which is fantastic! When asked if you want soup or juice before your meal, choose the soup. You won't be disappointed!

The food is good but it's a little overpriced for what you get. I had the fried chicken with my 2 year old and the wife had the shrimp, and the bill with 20% gratuity came to $60. Granted it's family style but it was enough for 2-3 pieces of chicken, corn and green beans. The chicken breading flavor was passable but didn't have much flair. It's very oriented to the older, formal crowd both in service and decor. The parking lot is an absolute wreck featuring a car shaped pot hole which can be hidden by parked vehicles so be careful!

Went here for Thanksgiving dinner. The service was good. The food was okay. The cost per person was a bit high, $33.00. Their gratuity was high too. I added a soft drink and my total bill was $45.00. Their receipts are not itemized. I won't go back for Thanksgiving BUT I will be back during a non holiday day. Their Fried Chicken & chicken both French onion soup is DELICIOUS!

I love this place for many reasons! I think I like family style serving, the food is always fresh and hot, the onion soup is amazing, the servers are really nice and to top it off you get ice cream at the end!!! Reservations are required but I highly recommend The Iron skillet!!!

I would not recommend this place to anyone. They spilled hot green beans & water on me on my lap. Owner didn't even offer any compensation. They should of made meal free but they did nothing of the sort. I definitely will not be going back to this place. Food is okay but nothing to brag about especially for the price.

Geez this was a hard one to review. Stopped in for a quick bite. Turns out this joint is old school. Portions were sized for midsize cars. Reservations preferred. Dress code seemed wide and unusual for the place. Suits to shorts and flip flops. Pricing was fairly steep. Baked chicken $20+, then you have sides - yikes! While we get the idea of sharing, paying $10+ for vegetable medley is wrong.

The decor threw me for a bit of a loop, it looks something like a cross between a funeral parlor and your great aunt's living room - fake flowers and teddy bears everywhere. We have a family dinner every year 2017 we chose the Iron Skillet bc we used to come there with our parents as children... We loved the It's nostalgia and family style sidedishes with main courses were individually served how ever the tables were too clothe together for our 8pm dinning time. Actually at times it was it was difficult for waiter to serve without reaching....that's reason for not getting a 5☆

Staff is excellent! Biscuits and apple butter excellent. My family of 8 came for the fried chicken rated in the top 3 in the city. Couldn’t finish 2 pieces due to the overwhelming amount of salt, not in the skin but the chicken. My family received 2 plates of chicken initially and to say the least there was quite a few pieces left at the end of the meal. Beer list is absolutely pathetic I realize this is a family restaurant but if your going to offer beer at least have a decent selection. At $20 a person left hungry and disappointed.

This place is a real treasure in the heart of Indianapolis. The ambiance is that of an ecclectic nature. Formal or casual, you will fit in. If you want the best home cooked meal in the state, don't go to Grandma's, go to the Iron Skillet. The food is of the highest quality and the tenderloin is a mouth melting joy to eat.

The food was excellent, the service was excellent, and although I was completely stuffed after a fantastic dinner, I managed to finish off my scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and strawberries. It is a little bit cramped but the old house turned into a restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere. Next time I visit Indianapolis I'll be sure to stop in again for a delicious meal!
