Fantastic burgers. Fantastic fries. Fantastic apps. Excellent service. We stopped in for lunch on a Thursday and were seated immediately. The ambiance is hip. The music was as tasty as the burgers. Vegetarians need not despair, there are a number of items on the menu to choose from that can satisfy almost any palate.

Umami Burger has been on my radar for a long time. It's been hyped up ever since it opened in Chicago and I was really excited to try it out. Sad to say, at the end of the day I was pretty disappointed. I'm going to start off with the most disappointing thing. The size of the meal. We are talking a $14 burger and this burger looks so sad on the empty plate. It' was such an itty bitty burger and it didn't even come with fries. As far as the taste goes, it was fine. A decent burger for sure, but I left hungry which never makes for a good experience. With Chicago having a plethora of great, juicy burgers everywhere, that will actually leave you full, there's no reason to come here. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be coming back.

Pretty good burgers. A little bit on the pricey side. I enjoy the burger, the sweet potato fries and the drinks. My family enjoyed it as well. This is the place that you might want to use for your first date. The staff is very attentive and professional. I will definitely visit again.

This is my second time at Umami burger, I loved it the first time I went (different location). I went around noon on a Friday, so it wasn’t busy. It took forever to get our food and when we finally received our food I wasn’t impressed. My meal was a bit cold and the burger was burnt; I felt like I was eating coal.

This place is a cool spot in a fun neighborhood. They have quite the selection of burgers, including the impossible burger. Ive had the impossible burger and the Cali burger here before and they were good, impossible way way better than expected, but the cali burger lacking, especially after the extremely long wait to get our food after ordering.

Food was good, the only reason I’m giving four stars is because my umami chicken sandwich was raw. They were very nice about it and replaced it with a new one (fully cooked), but my boyfriend finished his meal and I was still waiting for mine. When I finally got the replacement sandwich, they had cut the chicken to check if it was done. Please get a meat thermometer for the kitchen. Drinks were ok. Fries were very good, garlic aioli was super delicious!!!

Great place for a high-end burger with a tasty beer. I got the Manly Burger with Truffle Fries and they don't disappoint. Service is friendly, restaurant is clean and hip. Definitely recommended if in the Wicker Park area looking for a delicious burger.

Unfortunately this place just didnt cut it for me I had a chicken burger, the chicken was rubbery no flavor and burnt. The restaurant was freezing I get it it's summer time and I'm usually one that likes nice cool places but it felt like I was in a cooler.

We came in for dinner last night and ordered onion rings, an umami burger and a throwback burger. The umami was good for the first 2 bites but the good rich taste tapered off for the remaining chomps. A little disappointing, definitely not the best burger in Chicago. The onion rings were incredibly undercooked, all of them had a raw batter inside. My date got a real bad stomach ache after the meal. The service was great, though. So it's got that going for it. Our sever swapped out fries for the onion rings which was nice. The side sauces were also very good.

Really disappointed. We waited over 30 min for two impossible burgers and an order of sweet potato fries. When my mom asked the bartender who happened to be walking by to check on our order, it was clear he had a “not my problem” attitude. His response upon returning was “we have a really packed restaurant” and shrugged...When our burgers did arrive, it was clear the order was rushed and the cheese on one burger was still cold and stiff out of the fridge. Spend $50 on burgers elsewhere.

Impossible Burger has landed and Umami has nailed it. The BBQ impossible burger was delish. Not so sure how I feel about umami ketchup, but they had a batch of vegan aioli so I can't complain. Their vegan cocktail options are a little limited but the bartender worked with me to find something tasty.

Umami burger is one of my favourite Chicago places. I'm a vegetarian, and the impossible burger option here is superior to any other impossible burger out there. The fries are interesting, albeit pricey, but the star is the truffle ketchup!! I've been here almost 5 times now and will continue going! If you haven't been here, you're missing out. Go check it out!

Their food is tasty and the taste is unique! Would highly recommend the fries in any form. When I was there the food took a lot of time to be ready, but I think it was a one time thing, and I also got free fries as compensation :-)

I loved it! The place is very comfortable when its not packed and our server Jared was a blast. I tried the Manly burger and truffle fries and they definitely wowed me. So much flavor. I do agree that it is a bit pricey but the experience and taste were worth every penny. I will definitely be going back soon. As for the cocktails I tried the Blackberry Swizzle and the Man in the Yellow Hat and both were yummy although I'm generally not a huge fan of neat bourbon cocktails. All in all it was a great night with great food and I will be going again. I do recommend going earlier in the day to avoid the crowd. It started getting packed around 6pm.

A lot of money for absolutely nothing special. Took over 30 minutes for a simple burger at lunch time when half of the tables were empty. One patty was undercooked, one was just about right. Fries weren't fresh and were hard and cold. Came back because corporate asked me to try again. Visited again on 09/21/19 and was the same disappointing experience. Nothing special Umami burger for $13.50 except an oversized bun to make it look better. 1 (one!) piece of mushroom and 1 piece of tomato about 1 inch in diameter. Fries were so overcooked they were hard and tough at additional cost. Dessert tasted like something from a box. Total meal, over $33 and barely worth $15. Stay away from Umami unless you just want an overpriced boutique type place to say you've been there.

The wife an I stopped in before a concert. We had never heard of Umami Burger before but it looked like a nice place from the outside. We sat at the bar because we didn't want to wait for a table. The bar tender was awesome! We told him it was our first time there and he explained everything to us. The philosophy behind the food and drink pairing was really interesting. I had the manly burger and my wife had the black bean burger. We also split a full order of fries. Before our food came out the bar tender brought out a few sauces and their house ketchup. He explained what each was and their flavor. Then the food came out. Now I'm not easily impressed but I have to say my burger was probably one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. After my first bite I instantly knew I was going to devour the whole burger. I did and it was awesome! The fries were great as well and the sauces were amazing! We are definitely going back here whenever we are in that part of town.

This is another hipster bar with pretty decent burgers. The menu is small but pretty good overall. The atmosphere is very hipster including vinyl records that they will play if you bring in. The staff is great and the food is decent, they are generally fairly busy but finding a spot isn't too difficult.

Food is great, but (for me trying g to save for school) the price is not worth it! The burgers are inventive and unique. The fries come in several varieties (like truffle fries) and the drinks have themes and are boozy, but for like $13-$17 all you get is a well-crafted, smallish burger. There are plenty of places in Chicago where you can get a tasty and inventive burger with more side choices. If you’re looking for uniquely crafted burgers and quality meat, though, this is your place. They even sear an Umami ‘U’ on the bun!

Our group of 6 didn't have to wait for a table on a Saturday night around 8:00, which we were very surprised about. It was a snowy night in the city, so maybe less people were out and about. The server was very helpful in recommending items to us since most of our group had never been there. Everyone loved their burgers!

Very trendy and exciting. The decor is that of a modern art exhibit with painting and graffiti scattered about. The cocktails and wine specials are fantastic. The food however, while delicious, is overpowered with truffles. Be warned. Truffles are in everything!

Duuuuuuuude. Umami Burger is good. But not just good, it's great. Is it the best? No. That's why it got 4 stars out of 5!!! But their house ketchup with those maple bacon fries. I had a heart attack (with love and lust) just typing that sentence. The impossible burger is pretty damn good too and I am a carnivore. Anyway, enough of my rant, go try it!

Ordered two burgers medium well. Wait staff dropped off two burgers saying they were well done. We were ok with that info, if it was true. The burgers are actually on the rare side of medium rare... Hot through and through, but the only thing brown in the meat was the outer surface. Seemed very rare, to us. We were far too hungry and tired to wait for another. Still very tasty! Just not as done as we would have liked. We informed or wait staff. While the manager never came to talk with us, they did remove the burgers from our tab. I'd go again, for sure, I'd just make sure to check my mail before eating it, if time allows. Wait staff was prompt, attentive, and courteous. Saturday night, so the young crowd was kinda loud for our taste, too.

The burgers and sides at Umami Burger really are delicious. It didn't take long to get a seat at peak dinner hour, though the place was fairly crowded and loud. While the food quality is good, prices are somewhat high, so take a look at the menu ahead of time.

This was once considered a go to favorite for my family. Unfortunately the quality of the food and service has gone down hill over the years. Many short cuts have been taken and possibly a change of Management. The food is now comparable to eating out at a fast food establishment. Service is slow, lazy, and inconsistent. After a few too many unsatisfying experiences we’ve decided that we won’t be returning.

Got some fries to go. Tiny portion of fries in a big thick plastic container.. Any business that is following the trends of somewhat healthy wholesome food (meatless burgers, organic ingredients, etc) should SURELY be up to date on how obscene the plastic use in the world is.. It's an effortless move to switch to cardboard takeout containers. Honestly, I don't care about the quality of the food, unless you take responsibility for the impact of your business on the environment. Won't be returning until this is remedied.

Came here for the very first time and it was amazing! I had the “impossible trufflemaker,” which is one of their Vegan options on the menu. It comes with a green chili sauce, a delicious truffle sauce, and my favorite kind of patty, the impossible patty! I highly recommend trying the impossible burgers (for those who are iffy about veggie burgers, LOL.) Our server, John, was so tentative to our table, friendly, and took good care of us. Definitely will be going back for more burgers, jalapeño aioli, and truffle ketchup!

Delicious burgers. The main difference between Umami and most other burgers shops in Chicago is portion size. You won't leave Umami feeling like you don't want to eat food every again. You'll be capable of more than you ever imagined after a burger.

Pricey. We had to wait a little longer than usual for our meals. I had the slider sampler and was disappointed because the food was cold and burger slides were over cooked. Fries were not hot. My daughter had the Impossible veggie burger and learned hers was also cold but she ate it because we waited a while and she was starving. I also noticed a gentleman ordered onion rings and they too must have been cold because he didn't eat it so not sure what the deal was that night but hope they improve.

A very disappointing meal for the price. I agree with another review "fast food quality at fine dining prices"!! Beer and cider were flat. Sweet potato fries were not salted. Both burgers were well done (ordered one well done, one mid-rare). I suspect the burgers were precooked as they came out way faster than it takes to cook to well done and both burgers were cold. The green chili burger barely tasted of anything. Also, what is with the truffle obsession!? It's on everything. I have not had a bad meal in a while. Will not be going back!

So far I've tried 3 different burgers and all delicious. The in house made sauces are really good as well. Didn't really enjoy the truffle cheese fries though. Maple bacon fries are better. Atmosphere was pretty cool also and they had a guy playing guitar up front by the bar, who played pretty well. I will definitely keep coming back.

All the different and predominantly house made dipping sauces are tasty, but may be too much truffle oil for some people. Also a decent rotating beer selection, but I am by no means an expert. This is one of my favorite go-to places in Chicago. The burgers are always good and there usually isn't a line. The Classic Umami burger is my favorite, and the truffle fries are not to be missed! The atmosphere is also really nice :)

One of the best burgers I have ever had. I got the sunny side burger and added hatch chilli's to it. It was incredible. Meat was cooked perfectly. The truffle fries were very tasty. The best thing was the sauces at the the table. Even the ketchup has such a unique. Distinct flavor. I strongly recommend.

Something has changed here. Up until recently, I've had nothing but excellent experiences at Umami. It was one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The food is still excellent, but the service has completely hit a wall in the past 2 months. The most recent 3 times I've been over the past 2 months (we go relatively frequently), the service has just been so slow. Recognizing the trend, I made sure to note the times on my most recent visit. We arrived at 7:15 pm and were seated right away. We placed our order around 7:35 and didn't receive our burgers and fries until just after 8:30 pm. The restaurant was a little busy right when we arrived, but was no means packed. I can't imagine why it took an hour to receive our burgers. The selection has also changed quite a bit. We used to love the 4 sauces that came with the fries, but now there are only 2. It seems like they're discontinuing the free sauces to encourage people to buy the specialty fries ($7). The size of a full order of fries has also decreased. We used to be able to order 2 full order of fries to split among 4 people, but now everyone pretty much needs their own order. I think this is because they've switched from a full ceramic bowl to a basket with a paper lining. It looks like you're receiving the same amount of fries, but as soon as you get through the top layer, there's not much left. $4.50 for a basket of fries should be plenty for the entire table, but it isn't.

I was in last week with a friend for a sending off dinner. (I also work in the service industry). It wasn’t busy, so we should’ve had an amazing experience. My burger was cooked well done, when I ordered it medium rare. We asked for two sides of ranch and were given one white mystery sauce after asking the food runner, since the server forgot to include them in the order. My friends burger was too spicy for him to eat after the server assured him it wouldn’t be. The worst part was the service. The server only came to the table for our order, and to drop off the check. So we were forced to eat food that clearly wasn’t what we ordered. Not to mention the food is over priced. Would be okay if we didn’t have the situation described above.

Great food, good drinks, ok service. The server, Michelangelo, appeared to be the only server on a Tuesday night (with one bartender/one hostess) and as a result the service was very, very slow. Given the restaurant was slammed, there were multiple 4 tops and even a 6 top, this is more of a critique of the management (scheduling/staffing considerations) than the servers attention to detail. This would not dissuade me from going again, but maybe I would do carryout next time.

We aren't big spenders on eating out, but this one was the first time in a very long time that we have left a restaurant not feeling bad about spending that kind of money on a meal. Went for happy hour got Truffle fries, the Sliders, and the fish tacos, all 3 were exciting flavor experience. I enjoyed all of them and would come back for the food. The staff situation was weird. Umami is a great burger joint. I wanted to visit their establishment while I was in California but I couldn't find the time. This location did not disappoint. The grill mini tacos are a must. As a vegetarian the Impossible Burger may just be the best burger I've had within the last ten years of my vegetarian journey. I tried two . The truffle and the bbq. My favorite is the bbq . The only thing I would change is the lemonade. It is truly made at home lemonade. It is both bitter and very sweet all at once . I would go for a different drink.

The Wicker Park location seems a bit nicer, less casual than the West Loop spot. Beer selection is a little small compared to the absurd array of bourbons they have. Friendly staff. Impossible burger is awesome, but having burger, beer, and half order of fries for $30 before tip is steep.

It's over priced and small. I understand about trying to be gourmet food but still the taste was not good. I had order for a medium rare and got a medium well. The only good thing I had there was the beer I was drinking. The service staff is nice. Although the do lack on attention to the customer. I waited about 20 minutes to place an order.

Really good place for burgers. Don't try 'House pickle plate' it was horrible. They make their own sauces, mustard and every ingredients for the burger. Try 'The impossible' burger there, this place is not cheap. Every burger is around $15. On special request you can ask them to make impossible burger vegetarian. There is falafel burger options also for vegetarian people. It takes time to get your order ready so it can take 20-25 minutes before you have your main course.

We drove from the northern burbs to enjoy an evening in the city. I have to be honest. This place was a little disappointing. I expected an amazing experience, but the food and service was lackluster. My burger was good, but it was a little too charred on the bottom (mind you, I ordered the Everything but the bun burger - salad) and the butter lettuce was a little bitter. It took 45 minutes to get our burger and it was not even that busy. Our waiter passed our table several times and did not once refill my water and I could not even ask him since he would rush past. The only upside were the thin fries. They were delicious as was the ketchup and barbecue sauce (both with a Japanese twist). If you are a foodie like me, I want good food and good service. This place needs some brushing up on customer service. It is worth a try, but not a must try place.

Umami has never failed to amaze me. Their flavors, their drink selection, their atmosphere. It can get a bit busy so be sure to either arrive at a decent time or expect a wait. The wait is worth it and luckily, Jeni’s Splendid Icecream is across the street! Win win!!

Sadly, this spot has been on a steady downward spiral for the past couple of years. The servers typically seem overwhelmed, and the food is middling. As the quality has slipped, there is no longer any justification for preposterously high prices for what amounts to a fast food product. Judging from how empty the space is on a daily basis, especially compared to how packed they used to be, surely I’m not the only one who has noticed the decline.

Damn, this place is good!!! I had the Manly burger - it was cooked to perfection and the various flavors combined with the soft bun to make it a delicious burger you won't want to miss. We decided to be a bit adventurous and tried the Maple Bacon French Fries. Great decision! The fries were crispy despite the coating of maple and we could not stop eating them. I would say the burger was a bit smaller than expected but that will not stop me from visiting again. Looks like the place gets pretty busy so you might want to reserve a table ahead of time. We would have had to wait about an hour for a table but were offered the option to eat at the bar where we were quickly served. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go back and try the other burgers. Edit to add: Been back 2 more times and have had great experiences. Burgers and sides are delicious and service continues to be friendly and quick.

What an extremely disappointing experience. We were one of maybe four tables on a Sunday afternoon. Here's a summary of our experience: 15 minutes to get drinks. 50 minutes to get our burgers, one of which was so undercooked it felt frozen. Chicken sliders which were nothing more than a chicken tender cut in two. Overpriced order of fries that couldn't even serve one person. Wow.

Service was awesome cool that they offer you vegan burgers if you want but the kitchen / Cooks need to get a wrap under their stuff waitress is awesome even notice the mistake when she came to check on our table ask me how I wanted my burger done I told her well it came out almost bleeding and pink so when she came to check she said oh that's not well at all but we had a show to go to so she took the Burger off and my drink and apologized I told her it's not her fault that's on the cook other than that I do plan on going back next time in Chicago

Just eat here. Sure, it's a burger bar. But the burgers are damn good, the beer selection is solid, and our server was easily one of the best I've had at any Wicker Park eatery. I wish I could remember her name because she was a class act in being friendly and explaining the approach of UB towards their food.

Worst dining experience I've ever had! During our dinner there was at MOST 6 tables in the restaurant, it took roughly 20 minutes to get our drinks, and at 55 minutes we asked for a manager to see how much longer for our meals. Suddenly they appeared. Then they tried to overcharge an additional drink and an additional meal. When we asked to speak with the manager to resolve it, he gave us attitude and argued with us, saying he was understaffed and that our server was relatively new- not sure how that is the customers issue... so many things wrong with this place. Would never go back!

I used to like the turkey burger here a lot and that was the main reason I came here. But it is gone, no more turkey burger. Then I figured I can get the impossible burger and have it with my favorite unami sauce: the Diablo sauce. Guess what, that is gone too!! So they removed the sauce that made their good burgers taste amazing. No turkey, no umami, no me. They tried to change with times, this time maybe s little too much for their own good.

The truffle fries on the other hand were sad and disappointing. $7.50 for a handful of fries with a small amount of cheese on top. Flavor was meh. Maybe it's a bigger portion for dine in.

I walked in with high expectations after a friend told me its a must. It is! Loved the hipster ambiance, nice music and a bar to have a chilled evening. We ordered different burgers, all of them meat. They were all amazing and different in flavour which I liked it. Loved the fact that you can choose how cooked you want the meat. Highly recommend medium rare! Truffle fries are fantastic... please just order them! Keep it up with quality!

TLDR: slightly more pricey than some wicker burger spots but so worth every cent. Great service and really cozy spot. Beer selection could use some love. The burgers aren’t overly complex but the flavor profiles are unique and unforgettable. The cheesy tots are also pretty amazing. I never thought I would be blown away by tots but they managed it. The beer selection wasn’t great and was dominated by the really hoppy side of the spectrum. The saving grace was some Old Rasputin (sadly from the bottle) which pairs really well with burgers. The service was TOP NOTCH. Our server (John I believe) was really nice, very knowledgeable about the menu and funny (in the chill way, not the overly friendly annoying way) Will absolute be back, A+++

I had the pleasure of finding this place back in 2015. The food is amazing! The sauces are wonderful, and if I remember correctly they used to make most of the ingredients themselves (like the sauces, bread, burger...). Service was great too! Was a bit pricey but definitely worth it. Oh, and try the ginger beer!

I ordered the umami burger medium rare and it was very good. It's definitely pricey for the size of the burger so I'd only do it as a one time thing to try it out. Also, the waiter did bring the wrong order on the fries though and it wasn't super busy. Overall still a good experience.

Delicious burger. First time having a medium rare burger and I was pleased. The one issue I observed was when a patron notified the manager that his burger was not cooked to his liking. The manager then condescendingly told him that he saw no issue with the burger and that the executive chef cooked it. The patron was then upset and threw a tantrum after asking nicely several times to remake the burger. The situation could have easily been avoided. Shows bad management skills. It made for an uncomfortable experience.

I celebrated my birthday dinner at Umami burger with 19 friends. The restaurant and Kira accommodated us and made the planning a breeze! I was shocked that they seated all of us together and still had excellent service, delicious food, and made us feel like a priority. They even treated me to a piece of delicious complimentary pecan pie. If I had to plan my birthday all over again, this is the place I’d do it without a doubt! We’ll definitely be regulars here.

It's a better than average burger but at a far greater than average price. Plus, if you ask me how I want my burger, I expect it to come out how I asked. Ordered medium rare, got well done. Not really acceptable at an expensive burger place. I can't really justify recommending this place given there are so many great burgers available in Chicago, and Umami is just a chain with high prices and ok burgers.

Really great burger but I wouldn't wait the hour the waits have been. I went at 8:30 on a Wednesday and was told it'd be a 1 hour wait. I then went at 6:30 on a Wednesday and got seated immediately. Loved the manly fries. Also I ordered the original burger but tried the hatch and liked that a lot better. Also their ice cream sandwiches were amazing. The one with salted chocolate sandwiched between a snicker doodle and chocolate chip cookie was bomb. They also have Bang Bang Pies which are always fantastic.
