What's not to love about this classic, lovely French bistro? Amazing food and wonderful wine, terrific service from friendly and professional staff

Lisa Dure

Finally found some decent French bread in this city! Very cozy atmosphere, good service, good food. I’m not a fan of pork but if you are you’ve got a variety to choose from here.

I never review restaurants on Google, but this was truly one of the worst, most elitist restaurants I’ve ever been to. My girlfriend and I went to enjoy some $1 oysters (their Thursday special) and instead of simply telling us that it’s only acceptable to get them with a main dish, they passive aggressively stared at us while we ate. The manager made continued rude eye contact with me and the waitress pouring our water stayed close to us our whole meal, clearly ease dropping on our conversation. We felt pressured to buy an overpriced desert that was so small that it wouldn’t satisfy a toddler’s appetite. In the end, I’m just astounded that I couldn’t take my girlfriend out for a special little evening without being passive aggressively ridiculed for being in my 20’s and not make a six figure salary. Don’t waste your time when there are so many better, friendlier restaurants in the city.

This place was recommended to me by a friend who claimed the trout was the best meal he'd had that year... So I got the trout! It was delicious and perfectly cooked, yet left me slightly underwhelmed only because it was a victim to the chef's own prowess elsewhere. We had the steak tartare and French onion soup for the second and third course beforehand and they were honestly just fantastic. The steak tartare was well-dressed with the perfect amount of spice; we fought over who got the last bite. And the French onion soup had the most flavorful broth I've ever had in a French onion soup. Highly recommend this place and highly recommend the steak tartare and French onion soup.

What can be said , still a wonderful little bistro in what is now a trendy neighbourhood.

Mark Bires

In my opinion, this is the best French bistro in Chicago. Understand that it is a bistro, not aspiring to be a multi star restaurant, but presenting country fare classics with some modern flourishes. The cooking is deft, reliable, and often imaginative. The room is charming, small, lively, and crowded, just like so many bistros in Paris.

Lucio DiPaolo

Very rich and delicious - it was all good

Regina H.

Everything is wonderful.

Carl Gustas

The food always exceeds expectations. Very "cozy" in the dining room which adds to it's authenticity.

Mohammad Salahy

The best French restaurant in the city. Chef Oliver is the most respectful and great person you will meet.

My husband and I have been neighbors and patrons of this wonderful restaurant since May 4th, 1998, our 1st wedding anniversary! Over the years, the wonderful people, delicious food and perfect ambiance have always provided us with great comfort and joy. We miss seeing Jean-Claude, the owner, but his spirit will forever live on in this very special place!!

One of my fav locations for French food. Service is prompt even when they are busy. I will be bringing family next time. Food and atmosphere reminds me of Kansas City.

Joe Born

Wonderful experience every time I've been, very special place. The food and the atmosphere are a real delight. Couple next to us celebrating a 50th anniversary, and you can't help but feel they chose wisely.

Tracy Saint-John

The scallops were amazing..and the french onion soup was out of this world!

Jason Gilles

Our server was very nice and attentive. Mussel appetizer was delicious and very sizable.

Andrea Zastrow

Really enjoyed my visit here! The food was delicious and I especially appreciated our server's willingness to help me with finding gluten free options. She was extremely helpful and made great suggestions about other options that my friend and I would like. I would definitely recommend Le Bouchon and hope to return soon.

Vlad Novikov

Amazing experience, the half off wine bottle night was insane! I got to taste some wine I have never had before off of their extensive bottle list. food was amazing, only one complaint - the baguette that came with the bread and butter service was hard. not like crispy on the outside delicious french bread hard - like I'm chewing rubber hard. everything else was perfect though :-)

Shebnem Ince

Great classic French.

Laura DeLassus

I have too many wonderful things to say about this place. It's the perfect size, feels cozy & familiar. The standard menu items are amazing, & they change things out seasonally. TALK TO YOUR SERVER & ask for for her recommendations. She will definitely guide you in the right direction. And then come back in 2 weeks & try the things you had to skip. ;)

Andrew Thiermann

This is the place for French food in Chicago. Amazing food, fantastic wine list and perfect service

Nick Rodriguez

I can't stop recommending Le Bouchon. Went on a Monday (1/2 off Wine) for a couple's date. Staff was nice and their sommelier helped us pick excellent wines. We ordered charcuterie, escargot, and tartare to atart - all were fantastic. The lamb shank special was melted off the bone, the duck tender, and the steak frites cooked perfectly. Don't hesitate with Le Bouchon.

Angel Balderas

Everything about this restaurants great atmosphere the food the people the food is very old school French cuisine with a touch of the new

Cindy

Amazing. 5 people, ordered 3 appetizers and 4 main dishes. Every single thing was literally out of this world fabulous. The service was perfect. If you want a nice quiet experience, go elsewhere. It is very, very loud due to small size. We happened to love everything about the place.

Kata Brasovan

Fabulous food It is a little tight and it was too cold but food. Trumps everything

William Quiñones

Excellent French food. Very delicate and top notch cuisine. Highly recommended!!!

Claudia Taylor

Get the French onion soup. It will change your life

thejuliakitchen

Classic French food and a nice wine list, the space is small and fills up fast. Reservations are almost mandatory.

Andrew Richter

Food is absolutely outstanding. Very busy place but wait staff is quick and friendly. Small menu and almost all the dishes are superb. The duck and lamb are delicious. Some of the most delicious chicken I have ever had. Fish, soups and salads are also delicious. Very cozy and small with a very comforting French feel. Portions are very large. Definitely shareable. Sauces on the dishes are divine. Great atmosphere for a romantic date. You might forget you're not in Paris for a second...

David Polk

Le Bouchon has the coziness of a French Cheers -- minus the round bar -- but with what would most certainly be much better food and drink. I have eaten in Bouchons in Lyon and had Cassoulet in Toulouse and can say that food is as good if not better than what you'll find in France. You won't necessarily find the latest culinary trends here and that's OK. They stick to what they do very well, and that is traditional French food and drink and, on half-price wine Wednesdays, lots of merriment. One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago.

Nicholaus Hoover

Best French onion soup ever. Killer steak tartar. Inedible entrees due to insane salting last two visits. Guess we'll just get apps here now. Nice wines too. I used to adore this place.

Peter Paricka

Great food and atmosphere - highly recommended for any occasion

Nicholas Montoya

Excellent. I had the steak frittes, with escargots and it was absolutely delicious. Wonderfully prepared French cuisine. Très delicieux!

NatSha Mccoy

The muscles were the best I've ever had! Heather was fantastic!!!

Chris and Becky

Authentic French food, off the charts awesome! Cozy French cafe feel. Fois gras was amazing! Fresh out of the oven bread. Great service!

Russ Johnston

Wonderful experiences both times we went, even when our reservation wasnt kept the first time. We were accommodated at the bar and given free extra appetizers and free pours of wine to make up for it. Our second trip was wonderful as well. Both experiences the food was AMAZING and very traditional.

Holly Phillippi

Wonderful experience as always. The escargot is one of my favorite in the city. Recent seasonal dish was the duck salad, highly recommended! This small bustling place has incredible service, a beautifully creative chef and romantic ambiance. A must!

Mikel Mazlaghani

Excellent food!

Scott Kramer

If Food and Service together make the perfect place then this place is a 3 star at best. Health (apparently the manager) is insensitive at best. One of there paintings fell off wall and hit my head (drawing blood), and the hostess offered a drink to be nice. Heather (aka idiot) said no, that was not right and a mere hit by a wooden photo did not warrant anything? Dumb server, dumber manager - she needs to work at McDonalds where someone can hold her hand. Rather than a apology, she decided to explain they were decorating and that is why it happened? The Duck is good, the rest of the menu has suffered from years of cut backs, that have left the spot a shadow of its former self. I have tipped 10% twice in my 55 years, Heather was the second time.

Tony D

The duck was amazing. The pate was amazing. The tartare was amazing. This place was amazing

Alex Krueger

Bivalvitarian friendly! Delicious moule frites. The freshly baked bread had a nice char on top and was served with super fluffy whipped butter.

Oscar Moreno Ramos

As usual, this place is amazing!

Cameron Helm

Excellent ribeye, red wine sauce is divine.

Bill Castle

Always Wonderful

Kristen LaBonte

Le Bouchon is hands down my go-to restaurant when I'm looking to have a nice dinner for a special occasion. First, I will talk about their drinks. They have a very extensive wine list, but if you're a fan of the dirty martini like I am, that's the move for this restaurant. The blue cheese olives are hand stuffed, and they keep the vermouth pour to a minimum. You can't go wrong with escargot, but they do it the best. Of course, their charcuterie never disappoints, either. Over time, I've gotten the steak frites (au poivre and maitre d), the salmon, and the steak tartare, and I've always been extremely satisfied. As for the dessert, I recommend the creme brulee. The service at Le Bouchon is very helpful and quick, which is a great plus. One thing to note is that the restaurant is quite small, so you'll need to book a reservation. Also, they do try to fit a lot of people in there, so it is very cramped (like need to move your table so you can get out and go to the bathroom type of cramped). If you're a fan of French food and you're in Chicago, you'll need to check Le Bouchon out.

Scott Worsham

One of the OG French bistros in Chicago. Better than ever!

Michael McCaffrey

Amazing French Bistro food with fantastic service!

Elizabeth Burton

I love this place. Food is alway excellent. Great customer service! I highly recommend.

c2sealy

Unbelievably impressed with the deliciously creative dishes. From chipotle corn, to andouillette octopus, as well as a phenomenal dessert. I will return with each change in the menu.

Elaine Filus

Excellent neighborhood authentic French bistro. Tuesday night prix fixe menu is a great deal. Tender escargots and a delicious tarte a l'oignon alsacienne. Perfectly cooked coquilles St. Jacques with baby artichokes, fave bean puree, and tomatoes. The room was a little "energetic" (noisy) by 7pm or so, but a lovely experience all in all.

Jennifer Guthrie

Fantastic French cuisine, cozy, elegant atmosphere!!

W.J. Goes

Started going when they opened. 5-6-7-Star for us. Wonderful dishes, Employees have the best attitude, so nice and caring, they remember your face, we are greeted with hug.My hats are off to this place, Wonderful, Si vows avez le temps. WJ

Paul J

Delicious

Ashley Rogow

Really phenomenal food, I live nearby and am kicking myself for not going sooner! The mussels were unbelievably delicious, my trout en croute was *to die for,* my partner’s scallops were perfectly cooked, and the chocolate dessert was just out of this world. Our service was also wonderful and I found the relaxed, casual atmosphere of the restaurant to be very warm and inviting. We will definitely be returning many times in the future.

Alejandro Melendez

Would give it zero stars if possible, my wife got food poisoning and for the price, ridiculous, take your chance, I wouldn't recommend this place, not even to my worst enemy.

Nicholas Steder

Good mussels, watch for strangely aged couples

Teresa Szczepaniak

Great French bistro option. Reservation is recommended but if you go early still quiet 5-630 PM. we had a reservation for 6 PM and it filled up fast after we arrived. Valet parking is available and why not splurge so you can enjoy your time! I recommend the brandade fume as an appetizer for a small group. The escargot is good but the fume was better. The pear salad is a must, the combination will knock your taste buds right out of your mouth and have you begging for another hit. My friend had the salmon and said it was amazing. I had the rack of lamb and decided I was ready to stay at that table for the rest of my life. That is until I had dessert, the Marquise aux Chocolat Noir. The staff was attentive and was ready to answer our questions. Every person there tonight helped every table. The staff explained each dish as it was delivered to our table so worth the trip.

Sir. Chipples

Great food Rabbit pot pie and escargots are phenomenal

Young Choi

Nice French bistro.

Jeff Katz

I forgot all about this tiny gem of a French bistro when I left town for a decade. Reconnected with it last week. Fantastic food with very large portions, we rolled out of dinner. The space is tiny, and can feel a bit cramped. My companions split the beef for two; I tried a bite, it was excellent. The regular rabbit is "en croute" which is like a pot pie, we ordered the saddle of rabbit off the specials menu, which is served in medallions. The specials change regularly, but are usually excellent. Unfortunately we didn't have room for cheese after dinner, but to my amazement they had my favorite "barnyardy" cheese, Epoisses. Reservations strongly recommended.

Bill Flapan

Excellent small bistro restaurant. We were there on a Thursday night and the place was crowded. I recommend reservations. Valet parking on weekends. Onion soup was fabulous with Gueyea cheese. (I can't spell the name of the cheese but I love the taste). My entree was a half roasted chicken in sauce of course. Scoop of Sorbet completed the meal. YUM

Eric Trip

Last week we celebrated 25 years coming to Le Bouchon! Food was amaizing just as it was 25 years ago! My favorite was duck for two. Amazing taste and service! Thank you!

Pepe Sánchez Cetina

Best place in the city. The onion soup is awesome. The mussels as well. Try the Jean Claude apple tart.

Michael Savo

I believe you'll find many glowing reviews, and I second them all. I would give 10 stars.

Kaitlyn Augustyniak

The food and service were wonderful! The place was cozy with a bistro-esque feel. Definitely make reservations! The waitress seemed well versed in the wine selection and recommended a bottle that we both loved. I had the Parisian style gnocchi and the sauce was awesome with the vegetables. The gnocchi were soft and tasty and paired nice with the goat cheese and pine nuts. My mom had the trout which was silky smooth tasting inside puff pastry. Very warm and comforting. The asparagus was just ok but was seasoned well. For dessert we shared the Marquise aux Chocolat Noir which was also very smooth and decadent with a really tasty sauce. Would definitely go back to try some other things on the menu.

Dan Rosenbloom

We got off to an iffy start because the hostess told us we couldn't get a table for over an hour, but the made a reservation on open table for 25 minutes later, but once that we had a table, the service was only surpassed by the incredible food. The highlights were the grugere, tomate ancienne, and the Tuite de fjords en croute (pictured).

Gwen Clancy

Amazing experience. This restaurant was very intimate but the waitstaff was quick and very friendly. Gave great recommendations for everything. The cheese was some of the best I've had. I ordered the steak frites and it was perfectly cooked. My boyfriend ordered the pate and one of their specials with chanterelles. I can't wait to go back and try some of their other options.

Lissa ONeill

The food is not bad, but it definitely not above 3 stars. DO NOT try escargot - we made the mistake it was pure tasteless rubber. If you are looking for amazing snails - definitely try Maude in West Loop.

Trevor Sumner

I was more than pleasantly surprised at this cozy French bistro. While the escargots and cote de bouef were good, the bouillabaisse was outstanding, probably the best I've had. The saffron broth was so rich and the seafood was perfect. The cassoulet was also tremendous, a great winter dish. The rabbit with pappardelle was equally outstanding. The wine list boasts a good amount of variety at affordable prices ($40-60) although I found the red wine by the glass to be a bit flat. Their cheese plate of 6 had several of my absolute favorites. So well curated. Overall the service was friendly, although a bit on the slower side, but the food more than makes up for it.

David Sink

The Best French Bistro in Chicago.

Jim Brady

I think they have the best mussels in Chicago

Geoff Gass

Best onion soup I've ever had. Steak au poivre was delicious.

david bishaf

Alex Wasily

Holly Grigalunas

This place is such a sweetheart. Unassuming and elegant, from the little bowls of baguette to the soft-spoken waiters. Have the bouillabaisse and steak frites. Linger there.

Brian Berlinger

Fantastic French bistro. Service is great, food is delicious, love the atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Sean Harris

One of my favorite restaurants. Best french food I've had.

lucian bogdan

Fantastic food with down to earth prices...

Mitch Brummer

Came with my French in-laws for their second French restaurant experience in Chicago. The food was excellent, the place felt like you were in France, and the service was pretty good. I loved how the bread in the onion soup had a bit of crunch to it and the Épi baguette for starter bread was a nice touch. Steak frites was cooked well, frittés were great, and zucchini blossom app was on point. So why 4 Stars? It may have just been the night...but it was so loud that it made my head spin. And it wasn’t just me but all 6 of us felt the same. I couldn’t hear the person next to me when they yelled and across the table was a pipe dream. Small caveat: I’m a 31 year old who loves loud concerts and noisy bars with the best of them, so it’s not a personal sensitivity. Don’t get me wrong, i love a bustling and lively place but this was just too much. I will definitely give it a second try with the hope that it is a bit more manageable. I want to be clear that everything about this place was great and authentic otherwise. It could totally just have been a bad night/time of night but maybe just pack in one less table.

James Toland

Hands down the best French Bistro in Chicago.

Kate Kim

Great food and great service.

Cheng Yao

This is one of the best French restaurants in Chicago. Staffs are very friendly. Very strong recommendation.

Denise Powell

The best muscles!

Kelly Harrold

Quaint, comfy and absolutely delicious. Service is always good, food is always amazing. My favorite French place in the city

Michael LaConte

Love the Restaurant and food. Hate the lack of manners on phone. Please be more thoughtful when speaking to others and learn how to say please and thank you!

Melanie Steiner

Excellent food and has a real French atmosphere

Adam Graff

Solid menu of French favorites.

Jayne Rose

This restaurant is so tiny, yet filled to the brim with patrons and able staff. I had the roast Green Circle chicken. So tasty it brought a tear to my eye!

John Sweetwood

Consistently great. I love Le Bouchon for lunch because it feels just like a small French bistro in terms of quality and warm service. Bottles of wine are half price on Mondays which is a great value given their quality selection. The French onion soup is second to none. Their salads are perfectly portioned and delicious. For a bigger appetite, their double patty bigger is sure to please. This is a neighborhood treasure people drive in to enjoy. Steak frites is a must try as well.

Guillermo Arauz

A nice place, but over priced

Lisa Schneider

love this Chicago gem. authentic French food

carson C

I've had better escargot. But it's a good neighborhood place.

Zachary Stanley

Cozy atmosphere, amazing food, amazing staff, great specials, a true French Bistro. What else can one expect?!

Louis Khor

Whoever handles their wine list must be asleep. Had their Grand Tinel Chateauneuf du Pape, and it was much too young (2015) to drink in 2018. Would have been much more annoyed if it wasn't their half price bottle Monday (so $50 instead of $100). But it helped destroy an otherwise fine meal. Their food is not bad, but I doubt I'll be back.

Leslie G

Some of the best food I've ever had.

Brett Nelson

Friendly staff and great food

Dustin Venske

The wine list here is quite good for as small as the restaurant is. I saw no beer on draft but saw several bottle options. The steak tartare was bright with a perfect amount of acidity. I think the best thing on the menu was the Brandade de Morue. Both entree's (appetizers) could have came with more bread but they were more than willing to bring us a extra.

Roger Thomson

A great bistro. Don’t miss the roast duck for two!

Bradford Hastreiter

Its like really good french kissing for your stomach

Cesar Mendez

Patty Montrey

Amazing lobster warm salad

Julia Price

I saw Le Bouchon on Seated and decided to book. We ordered their onion soup, escargot, duck for two and chocolate dessert. The onion soup was a little too cheesy but the broth was delicious and the onions melt in your mouth. The escargot was also delicious and we used the butter they were brought in as bread spread because it was so good. The highlight of the night was the duck. Before bringing it to the table, the server showed it to us, asking if it was well done enough. It was perfectly cooked and the skin was not too crispy. It was served with gravy and cabbage side. Dessert was also surprisingly good. The serving size was small but it was so heavy that we couldn't eat any more. We also had plenty of wine, asking the servers to pair whichever wine they thought best and plenty of French75 cocktails-- ssoooo good!! I would definitely go back again!!

Harlen Fleming

Always great food!

George P. Cain

Best authentic French cuisine in Chicago!

Natty's Pantry

I had such an amazing experience every-time I come in. The staffs are so nice and the foods are excellent. Make sure you tried Mussels here. It is one of the best mussel I have ever had, the broth is totally make it unique. Also I love sausage here, it is so flavorful.

Susan Mitchell

Roast duck - perfect. Love the spatzle and cabbage replacing the wild rice. The music was perfect too. Great dinner - great fun. Thanks

John Barker

Very excellent cuisine, highly recommend this French restaurant that carries a tradition of excellence in service and food.

Amazing French fare. I was lucky enough to get chanterelles in a gravy sauce on toast, which were in season. I also had foie gras two ways and it was delicious. My girlfriend had the steak frites and we finished with a chocolate pastry on ice cream. All was amazing! Nice work!

Mary Woods Reese

Great food, atmosphere and service. Come hungry!

David Dedinsky

Service, outstanding!! They went the extra mile to please. Food wasn't too shabby either. Delish!

Joseph Madigan

Onion Tart + Champagne = Perfect

matt pennetti

So I heard the steak was really dope. Went here with my dad because he loves steak but hadn't had a good one since the stroke. I've never had a worse piece of meat. I've also never seen my dad cry. And he did tonigh. After the steak. Not tears of happiness. Tears of sorrow and feelings. Feelings that hadn't been revealed since the accident. Good drinks, oysters, and pate.

Pete Smiler

It is my absolute pleasure to tell you this is one of the best restaurants in the city and such a clutch go-to in the neighborhood!!!

Marcel Sudo

Very small and cozy French restaurant. Great decor and atmosphere.

David Lieberman

Service and food are amazing. A perfect date night spot

Geoff Godwin

Just excellent food, and wonderful wine choices. Everything paired perfectly and the duck was incredible!

Jeffrey Vandagriff

We ordered their onion soup, escargot, duck for two and chocolate dessert. The onion soup was cheesy and the broth was delicious and the onions melt in your mouth. Fantastic small restaurant. Try their lamb a unique experience in Chicago

Gary Johansson

Wonderful ambiance, delicious food, great drinks, who could ask for more?

John Smith

If you are in Chicago but want to feel like you are in Paris for the evening, this is the place to go. The rabbit special they were serving when I was there was easily within the top 10 of meals that I've ever had.

Tim Cohron

Amazing food and wine, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Overall great dining experience

Henry Murphy

Four trips to Le Bouchon and every one has been one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. The food is incredible, the joint is cozy, the vibe is just so right. Well done, LB.

Jun Don

Amazing dessert. Will definitely come back for food

Michael

Used to be one of my favorite it's not as good as it used to be although I still recomend it

Nancy W

Too too noisy, dreadfully overrated. Entré very poor recommendation from waitstaff. Left early .

Colin Hayes

Always excellent food and great service. Be sure to take advantage of the weekly deals.

Meredith Accardi

Be prepared to wait even with a reservation. The food is worth the wait. The service is very french, lets put it this way hospitality is not their strong suit...let's face it is about the food. This resturant is very small with maybe 20 tables. So, it feels a bit tight. I would definitely go back but now I know what I'm in for, and Ill be prepared to wait as well as deal with a salty server.

Patricia Medema

Tuesday Prix Fixe menu is definitely worth the trip. This time we had Salade Lyonnaise, hamachi, the halibut special and their pastry wrapped trout. Substantial. Delicious and thoughtfully presented. Excellent service. For dessert we had the religiusse (sp?) and the creme brulee. Ate it all. Le Bouchon is great every time we go

Antonio

Food is good when hangry. And snickers.

William Sholten

The duck, for two, is amazing!

Faith Rago

One of Chicago's hidden gems! I was introduced over 20 years ago to this French Bistro, The food is absolutely amazing!!!

Dan Gray

Solid French food.

Marithe Saavedra

I loved this place, it has the best foie gras on Earth, I had other stuff, but I simply cannot forget the foie gras! A delicacy for all your senses. It came with a sweet sauce and arugula.

Evan Djikas

I've been going here for at least 15 years. The father passed away suddenly early in 2016 but the kids and mom keep it alive and improved. I only wish they'd bring in the chocolate soufflé from their La Sardine restaurant. They now allow outside wine, though at $50 per you better have a great bottle.

LORENA JIMENEZ

Very crowded :( ... space is limited and if a couple is celebrating a special date it would be a little uncomfortable

Mykhanh Nguyen

Service and food was great. Love their onion soup.
