Chicago Diner is famous nationwide with vegetarians around the country as a must try while in Chicago. I have both eaten here recently (ordered nachos, they were great!) as well as had a catered meal from here. two observations - I’m not sure if I would call it service, but first impressions when you ask for a table or you are there to pick up your order - hectic. It’s just the vibe, not a statement about the competency of the hostess table - they are adept at juggling. It’s fast paced and intense at times. Food is hit or miss - as experienced with the catering order - it could just be that what we ordered didn’t travel well. I believe it was “chicken fried” but it was really hard - we ended up having to use scissors to create smaller portions. As I said, I previously enjoyed the nachos, the boy also liked what he had ordered as well. Will definitely dine here again, just skip over anything fried, which is a healthier choice anyway.
Cool place! My sisters and mom are strict vegetarians, me not so much but it's a very familiar thing for me. I enjoyed this place. The food and atmosphere were very good. I would return.
My fiance and I took his little sister on Saturday. She's vegetarian and is always having to just order sides or salads when the family goes out to eat. To see her face light up when she realized everything on the menu was fair game was seriously the best feeling. The milkshakes are AMAZING. All 3 of us were incredibly happy with our meals and our server was wonderful.
Always great food and ambient atmosphere. Good for both meat-eaters and non-meat eaters. Great for big group to sit at communal table. Our friends always love ordering poutine, jalapeno poppers and soul bowl. Delicious desserts. There is no reservation but there is a bar to chill, drink and order appetizers including space to wait and mingle.
I have tried the Chicago diner twice when in town in Chicago. It’s just not my favorite food, their dishes could use some extra spices and more flavor. It seems everything I order is a little bland even though there’s so many different things in it. The spicy fried chicken sandwich was overwhelmingly hot in the sense that all you taste is red chili flakes and nothing else. However their milkshakes are absolutely amazing and you have to try them if you come.
Awesome place to eat, especially if you're vegan or vegetarian. Loved the food!
Just everything looks and tastes delicious. Hard to decide what to get. I got the pb chocolate vegan milkshake. The southwest bbq vegan salad with chicken. I got to share her food. Thats why she's a keeper. She got the biscuits and gravy with country potatoes and tofu scramble. Excellent scramble.
Absolutely delicious, no shortage of variety and options here
My favorite spot for Vegan food. Went there on a Saturday. The service here is friendly. This place has a nice design. Atmosphere is similar to a place in Columbus I loved.
Fun, friendly and fabulous food! Vegan yummies. Everything we had was delicious, fresh and beautiful. The people working there were very cool and genuinely friendly and helpful. You shouldn't miss it if you're in the neighborhood and are hungry. I will definitely be back!
Great vegan dishes. Our server was so nice and attentive. Food comes fast and so do the refills on water!
Got there about 5:30pm on a Sat with minimal wait for 4 people - about 10 min. An hour later, the wait was 45min. Great service. Food came out hot! We had a Cubano, the lentil loaf, the Buddha's Karma burger and a Soul Bowl. Everything was really delicious. Plus they have beer on tap!
Awesome selection for vegan and vegetarians! You can pretty much find whatever you're feeling like. Breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, shakes & a selection of beers and cocktails. Tried the Reuben sandwich since that's what they are known for. Awesome to try a veggie version. Multiple locations. Liked the bar spots at the Logan Square location.
They food is ok, not the best vegan food for my taste. A little bland
Wow service, staff was great with customers and even among themselves as a team were super!! Staff was quickly and organically able to fix a small issue with my drink. I'll definitely be back and enjoy the rest of their menu.
One of my favourite restaurants that I've visited over and over when visiting Chicago.
Delicious food with vegan only options! My girlfriend and I loved it! Very nice decor inside and the staff is incredibly helpful and attentive! Food portions are great for the price!
We stopped in for vegan shakes as we were walking around. I must say they were pleasantly good since I am not a vegan and compared it to milkshakes in typically get.
Great staff and food.
A favorite place for tasty vegetarian food. Food was so delicious. Really nothing but great experiences here, so I will be back.
Oh my god this place is seriously the best. Seriously. The vegan food is off the chain. You don’t even know it’s vegan half the time. But it is really busy and crowded so be prepared to wait for a table. My favorite thing to order is the milk shakes. Portions are huge you won’t leave hungry!
Everything is so delicious and taste homemade. They are so busy. Needed to wait for a table, but totally worth it
I met my vegetarian friend here for lunch. The space is small but clean and bright. I tried the chicken wings and they were pretty good. I had a chai latte and it was really good (very sweet) and the avocado crunch salad. They have an extensive drink menu but unfortunately I had to go back to work. The staff was super nice and efficient. Even if you aren't a vegetarian they have really good food.
I love this place! I’m a regular & their vegan options are great even for meat eaters. If you haven’t tried vegan food or if you have non vegan friends, take them here. You won’t be disappointed. Staff is great too. Try a shake or my favorite the S.U.V.
For vegan American greasy dinner foodnits pretty good. B-
An awesome Chicago staple in Boystown! The staff is always extremely friendly and kind. Guaranteed that the menu is unique to themselves so make sure to try something that interests you because unless you come back you probably won’t find it the same way on another menu!
The food was amazing and the milkshakes were even better! I love all of the vegan options. 10/10
The tostada has almost no flavor, not even the chimichurri sauce could add enough flavor to it. Healthy food can be tasty, as any food SHOULD be, so it’s a shame this Avocado Tostada was so bland. The portion was acceptable but not worth it considering the immense lack of flavor. Again, it was extremely disappointing and if you’re used to Mexican food with rich flavor then you’ll likely be disappointed with this as well.
Server was awesome. So was my Reuben. I didnt miss real pastrami, it was just as good. If you have a vegan friend visiting town, this is a must stop.
The Reuben was delicious, as a meat eater I was particularly impressed. The guacamole was just okay, it looks like the spinach dip is the way to go. The vegan ice cream was good, as was the apple pie
Great vegan diner. We had a stroganoff poutine, the Titanic not burger and orange "chicken" stir fry. Everything was delicious, and served quickly with friendly staff
Went in for a carry out. Vibe was great in there and the staff were all super friendly. Had the bahn mi, it was delicious and weird in a great way. Definitely will go back any time I'm in town.
Great food and people, every time I roll into Chicago, I try to stop in. Meat free since '83 is their motto and they make it taste great! If you want great vegetarian and vegan food, (even if you're not either of those things) it's amazing!
The menu is very creative and unique. I have tried most of the vegan dishes and they are flawless.
I WAS PLEASED WITH THE FOOD AND THE SERVICE. I HAD THE GYRO AND IT WAS UNBELIEVABLY CLOSE TO THE REAL THING. I CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK AND TRY SOMETHING NEW.
Food and staff are very good!
I generally dislike diner food, hence the cut of one star. But I'm veganish (don't @ me), so I go here. I used to only go to the location on Halsted, which I still associate with the best food. It could be years of conditioning, when actually they both have the same quality. As for the food itself, I don't like junk food, so I never get the shakes or dessert. But if you want something veggie, you can't really go wrong here. If you want something actually healthy and veggie, though, I would recommend a non-diner. I find the potato hash too oily, compared to places like Hash Chicago and Bakin N Eggs. I usually get the S.U.V, but like other things on the menu, it's heavy and overly salty. But still, many stars for great service and, well, just existing.
Great food. Bucketlist checklist check off
Love this place so much I brought the cookbook!! Always good vibes and big smiles when I enter the restaurant. You have to try the Spinach Artichoke dip, changed my life!
Ordered from caviar, and I loved my sweet potato burger and fries but I didn’t receive the milkshake I also ordered. I asked my caviar delivery person about it and he said on his end he only saw the burger order. I had the receipt stapled on the plastic bag and it says “has shake” in red. I don’t know what that means but I really wanted that “award winning” milkshake!
go to vegan spot in Chicago. great food and even better drinks.
I love this place. I don't usually stray from my usual of the wings and rueben but those are consistently spectacular. I also like the fact they serve wine and beer. I do wish the water wasn't so tepid but that's a small gripe.
Only complaint is that it is always busy.. but it's because the food is amazing! Shakes are meh. But all the food is spectacular.
Loved all the options available and the food tasted amazing.
One of the best in Chicago. Would love to visit their again.
Lives up to the hype for sure. As a Vegan who came to Chicago to visit friends, this was probably one of my favorite parts. The milkshakes are beyond explanation, and the Vegan Reuben/Mac N Teese combo was next level. Thank you Chicago Diner for showing us how good plant based meals can be!
This place is crazy good. All your diner staples but made vegan. We had the ruben, and one of the burgers, along with a peanut butter milkshake that was to die for. If you are in Chicago for any period of time you need to go here.
Try vegan here. It's the best. Staff are friendly and efficient
Delicious food that everyone can enjoy! Plus I know of nowhere else to get vegan shakes! And the side parking was a godsend!
Killer vegan comfort food. The Reuben never disappoints. Shakes are to die for. Mac and tease always a favorite.
Good food poor service
The experience was great. The staff is attentive and answers all questions. Ordered the gyros sandwich and special recipe wings with buffalo sauce. The ranch was amazing and the texture of the meat was like the real thing. The taste isnt like the real thing but that shouldn't matter, the food us worth it.
Haven't been to a Chicago Diner in years, as I relocated to Nevada 10 years ago. The food today was gourmet quality vegan and/or vegetarian. Delicious as I always remember. Thank you for your creative menu, healthfully prepared and never over salted. Don't forget to purchase a Chicago Diner cookbook, as I did.
Chicago Diner was the first vegan/vegetarian restaurant I had ever been to back in 2012. Over the years, it has become our first stop when we visit Chicago and I’ve tried a ton of items from their menu. I can always count on a delicious meal, fun atmosphere, and crazy good cocktails.
'MeatFree since '83.' Really tremendous entrees and specials - über delightful in flavor, presentation, veganistism. Great cocktails and craft draft beer selection. The place bustles but isn't claustrophobic or overwhelming. Award-winning milkshake didn't dissapoint. Oh, and they have the movie 'Cube' on VHS along with hundreds more for the retro videofile's enjoyment.
This place is a treat! The Buffalo wings appetizer was huge and delicious. The fries are delicious and the country fried stake was spot on.
A favorite spot for tasty vegetarian food. I had a cousin come into town and she asked me to go back here. It has a nice atmosphere.
This place is a classic! The food is always delicious and the staff ever stylish and refreshing.
Meat free and creative options in a casual setting.
Amazing food. Two new vegans and two reluctant and reserved diners went in...four extremely satisfied people came out. Drinks, nachos, four entrees, desserts - all spectacular. Portions are generous. Flavors were incredible. We will be back. I think we found our new birthday restaurant!!
Visited on a Saturday night as my newly vegan friend wanted to try their breakfast. Upon inquiring about it, as we saw the menu mentioned it was only served til 3, our server Chiara confirmed that they were not serving breakfast but had a big 'ol menu to choose from. My friend said thanks and tried to explain that we had hoped to try breakfast cuz she read it was so good. At this point, Chiara told my friend there was "an iHop down the road." I was floored but my friend maintained her composure; she ordered a small order of fries, I ordered poutine. The poutine started off ok for me but after the top layer, I found the amount of gravy to be way too much (and it had a spice to it which was good but I hadn't expected). The fresh cut fries are really good tho. Our server never came back to our table so my friend had to go and request our check from the guy who sat us and was cleaning menus at the bar. About 3 minutes later, Chiara finally departed from the table on the other side of the diner she had spent a good amount of time at talking to a customer, and came to our table. "What's up?" She asked. We requested the check, which she brought with a pink heart drawn on. My friend hopes to revisit during the day to try the breakfast she's read rave reviews about.
Just recently transitioned to veganism and I am amazed at what they can do with non meat products! I had the Reuben and it was spot-on, had tofu scrambled eggs which I've never had, I don't think they taste like eggs, they have the consistency, but in my opinion they taste much better pretty darn good all by them self without any type of sauce. Staff was excellent food was excellent ambient was excellent, a little bit of a wait, but hey it's all in good fun!
Love this place. Food is excellent. You really can't go wing with any of their options. Staff are friendly and personable. The carrot cake shake is a must have.
Still my favorite place to eat. The food and service are out of this world. We have a lot of good vegan food in NYC but nothing compares to Chicago Diner. I dream about the Radical Reuben and the Monte Cristo several times a week. They’re poutine is the best I’ve ever had. I ❤️ YOU CHICAGO DINER!!!
I have been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for 50 years. When I heard there was a dedicated vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Chicago, it was a must! The Chicago Diner has been a vegetarian haven for 33 years. I had the Radical Reuben with sweet potato fries. That sandwich just might have been one of the best I've ever had. I'm usually not real keen on fake meat; but the seitan added to the sandwich was excellent. My wife had a kind of taco bowl. She is one of those ladies who always leaves a little on their plate (what's up with that?); but this time she cleaned every molecule. All the food that came out of that kitchen looked phenomenal. The waitstaff was friendly and very efficient. Coffee and tea were excellent. Add to the fact that this restaurant uses locally sourced and/or organic ingredients makes this a five star eatery in my book.
Excellent vegetarian and vegan food. The vegan milkshakes are also the best I have had. If you are in the area it is well worth going out of your way to try.
So awesome to have good old diner food!! Really such a treat for a vegan, and indistinguishable for regular omnivorous folk. The poutine is ridiculous and the ranch dressing is the best. Cant go wrong with the Reuben, and I hope to come back and try the country fried steak!
Just go here. Stop reading reviews. This place has the best vegan comfort food you can find in the whole country.
Great variety of food & best desserts ever !
Good food. Got the Thai "wings" and jalapeno poppers to-go. Wings were dense but flavorful, would have again. Poppers had a crunchy and delightful batter, but was expecting a faux cream cheese opposed to the cheddar they had, wasn't too impressed with that aspect. Poppers' ranch dipping sauce was phenomenal though. Cookies were delicious, but would like to see and taste them without saran wrap... it always seems to impart some flavor, unfortunately
The breakfast sausage was dry and chewy. I liked the French toast. Service was nice. I've had better vegan food than this place, slightly overrated in my opinion. But not bad.
So first off I just have to say, we had been directed to this place by three, non-vegans. If that doesn’t say what needs to be said I don’t know what else can! Lol! As vegans, my husband and I can 100% say, without a doubt, this is the best vegan food we have ever had in the entire time we have been vegan. We live in the suburbs an hour outside of Chicago and we will make the trek out here weekly/monthly because it’s THAT good. The staff that works here is so friendly I cannot begin to explain how nice they are. Even during their busiest hours they are so attentive and we have never had our orders be messed up, or even taste wrong/bad. This is the BEST restaurant (vegan or not) that we have ever experienced. We are so grateful!! Thank you Chicago Diner we love you so much!!
Really was impressed with the whole experience at this vegetarian restaurant. Service was friendly and quick, the meal (black bean burger and waffle fries) was very filling and delicious, and the dessert was sensational. Make sure you leave enough room to order one or take one to go. Pricing was on the high-rise of fair, but fair nonetheless: meal with a cocktail and a dessert was $30. Its tight inside, so prepare to wait if you go during a busy time. Enjoy!
Pretty much my favourite restaurant in Chicago! The staff is great and their food is always On. Point. There'll definitely be a wait at the door, but it's worth it!!!
Fabulous food so healthy and tasty, loved it! I will be a regular here.
A Chicago favorite and Vegan heaven! Must try are the Rueben, the Country Steak plate and the Cheesecake. Healthier options available too.
It’s Chicago Diner ... it is and always will be worth the wait, drive, and cost.
Was beyond stoked to try this vegan chicago staple! But..was sadly v disappointed. We ordered the orange chicken stir fry with tempeh..was nothing orange chicken flavored about it and the tempeh was soo dry and flavorless. Like just steamed and thrown on the dry rice. The lentil loaf was hearty in texture, but also bland and so salty. The milkshakes..paid 7.99 each for 2 flavorless milkshakes..the chocolate mint had NEITHER of the flavors and the vanilla chai was str8 up just sugar with a hint of vanilla. My (vegan) mom just had surgery down the street so we wanted it delivered..but their delivery app was down. Ordered it for pick up and was going to send an Uber to pick it up..had to pay in person..SO had to leave her and go pick up. Super let down by this experience and $60 later...leaving this review.
Love this place!! Great vegan food with a separate GF menu. Server was super helpful with making a few suggestions due to food allergies and everything was amazing. It's been a long time since I've had a milkshake and it was delicious. Would definitely go again. Cozy spot in a cool area, close to the train.
Had a great meal. My server was nice.
Wonderful Vegan restaurant with a separate Gluten Free Menu. The food was amazing and the portions were large. Loved It!
Wow. An amazing meal. Our cocktails were fantastic. The beer selection was fantastic. The food was sublime. ALMOST everything was nearly perfect. Only complaint: We started at the flagship location and they told us the wait was 45-50 minutes for our group of 5. They then told us we could try the other location which had more seating for larger groups amd probably less wait. We hustled over there and were told the same 45-50 minutes and then made to wait over am hour. The food amd service from there more than made up for it, but it would be nice if they could actually accurately quote wait times and had a line of communication between the two FOHs to avoid situations like these.
I've never had a bad meal here. It's not just good vegan food, it's GREAT food!
A healthy, tasty alternative.
Absolutely fantastic brunch menu. It was quite busy but we still got excellent and quick service. Food was exceptionally high quality.
tucked into a cozy corner of boystown you will find this delightful and beautiful diner. The walk is amazing and seeing all the rainbow flags and proud people made us so happy. then the food... my goodness. vegan heaven. staff is amazing!
Vegan milkshakes are incredible! Dinner was good too but dessert is AMAZING
The food is delicious and shakes are to die for!!! All vegan!!
Delicious! Had a carrot cake shake and the Cuban sandwich and loved it!
This diner serves delicious food - I tried their Polish style quesadilla which was amazing - and the staff is polite and nice. They also serve vegan milkshakes and other diner food. Nice ambience with booths, tables and a bar. Really liked it!
Such an awesome place! Everything we got was delicious and the neighborhood rocks! A must for any vegans living in or visiting the city!
The service is fast, and it’s quite honestly the best Vegan diner food I’ve ever had in my life.
Always a fabulous time! Adorable servers make the experience so much more enjoyable. Vegetarian heaven
The staff here is so friendly and genuine. Made me feel right at home! And the food....AMAZING! 10/10
Absolutely loved this place. In a country full of obsessed obese meat eating humans, this is an oasis for vegetarians and vegans alike. Super food and good bar menu. Attentive staff and great service. Cool and casual ambience and funky decor.
A very nice semi low key place with great vegan dishes to choose from. If you're a die hard vegan, then this place is definitely for you. Or if you simply just like to eat healthy foods in general.
This place was fantastic! My boyfriend and I visited in 2018 and I forgot to leave a review. Sorry! Sal was our server and the owner, she was so friendly and made the experience so great! The food was absolutely amazing and we will definitely be coming back on our next trip to Chicago. I can't wait to try other items from their awesome menu. Thanks Sal! You're the best!
Vegetarian food, yeah, very delicious. The food was tasty. I'll return with my friends. The bill was well within reason for the quality.
This place was perfect for us - a couple of vegan and gluten free eaters. The menu made it almost impossible to choose. The milkshakes (!!) are delicious. And don’t get me started on the lentil loaf and mushroom gray!
The best of this place is the meat that you can't eat.
Been here so many times. There isn't much to say besides: great alternative diner food, great prices, relatable staff, and plenty of elbow room for a comfortable atmosphere.
Me and why wife loved this place! We travelled from Cleveland, OH and wasn’t able to check out any other vegan restaurants because Chicago diner had a bit of everything on the list from lunch, brunch, cakes and shakes. This was by far the best vegan spot we’ve ever been too. The staff was great especially Cody and Jada. The atmosphere was very diverse which is how we like it. We loved the feel of the diner because it had an old school atmosphere to it and everyone dressed and looked cool with their different styles. Overall great experience. We had great food and met two new friends in the process ;) we’ll definitely be back!!!
A diner that's frozen in time. Definitely a great Chicago must
Everything was really delicious. Plus they have beer on tap!
This place was SO great. The food was AMAZING (no I’m not vegan or vegetarian... yet) We took our three year old who happily ate her “chick’n” strips. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND the wings. This place was incredibly busy but we were content waiting in their covered back patio. The wait staff was friendly and gave us a lot of recommendations on what they liked, so you can tell they all eat there too. They turned tables in under 30 seconds in front of us, it was crazy. The bathrooms are kinda gross tho.
First time coming to the diner and it was delicious! I got the meatloaf and man oh man! The vegetables were seasoned so well to go with the gravy on the loaf! Everything was well priced for how good the food was. You must try it :)
Food was really good and service was excellent. We didn’t know what to expect going in, however we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food considering this is our first time eating vegan food. My wife and I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich with waffle fries and sweet potato fries, both were really good but I loved the waffle fries more. My daughter got the country fried steak, and my son ordered the chicken shawarma plate on their special menu, and he loved it!
Casual atmosphere, good food, service was fabulous, a bit pricey
Exactly what we were hoping for. Awesome vegan food for people who actually like to eat. Portions are a normal size it isn't a bunch of “diet” entrees that are gluten and soy free. I like soy and I love gluten. Hail Seitan!
I've been here a half dozen times in last 20 years. The staff is always fantastic. The food is some of the best vegan diner style grub in the country. The place is always packed. Cost is very reasonable and environment is unassuming. If I could send a vegan to one place in Chicago, this would be the place. I can't say enough about it.
Lovely servers and gargantuan portions. The "chicken fried steak" was exactly what this displaced Southerner needed.
Such a lovely environment. Kids menu comes with crayons for the kiddos
Great vegan taco salad. Loved the carrot cake shake for dessert - never had anything like it.
Best vegan food. Period. It doesn’t get better than Chicago Diner. Go here on a weekday over a weekend if you can. Sometimes on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays the line to get a table goes out the door and halfway down the block. But Chicago Diner is a CRUCIAL stop in Chicago for vegans and non-vegans a like. Don’t pass up a chance to go here.
The breakfast sausage was dry and chewy. I liked the French toast. Service was nice. I've had better vegan food than this place, slightly overrated in my opinion. But not bad.
Even though my Burger fell apart in front of cute guy, I love this place, every Pride day since 2005, I've made a Pilgrimage here to dine, love ya!
So, so good i would recommend this to anyone vegan, vegetarian or not, this place is so friendly and the food is to die for. I recommend the shakes and the "chicken" fried steak and if you like rubins they have good ones here too.
This place is one of the best, tonight we had the famous wings, the Cuban
Delicious food for veggies & non-veggies alike! Great & friendly service! Make sure you try one of their yummy milkshakes - I recommend Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!
Love the options and variety!! Just wish the menu was a little clearer on what could be GF but the waiter was super helpful!
Awesome, as always. Clementine is a great server!
Food is good wait time is Crazy, it is WAY to LOUD in there they should lower the music like allot, I can’t even talk to my spouse in there. Otherwise the food was good.
Good vegetarian / vegan restaurant. Wish there was one out in the western burbs. Would go often.
Seriously some of the best food I have EVER had, especially since I became vegan. The atmosphere was great, service was awesome, people from all walks of life are welcome and it’s just a cool restaurant. The vegan milkshakes are Phenomenal.
While in Chicago, I tried their wings, gyro and cuban sandwich. Their wings were sooooooooo good and the gyro was mind blowing. I wasn't sure that it'd be good because I've never had a vegan gyro before and imagine it'd be hard to perfect but they did such an amazing job. So good. The cuban didn't taste like an actual cuban but it still tasted great. If I'm ever in Chicago again, I'd definitely come back.
Best gooey- least healthy vegan options. Love the non-mlikshakes
I’m not a health freak and believe meat should be enjoyed, but I gave it a try and guess what? I’m quite shocked how tasteful the food is. It’s different but In such a tremendous way. Give this place a try if you’re in the area. Everything is healthy and great tasting.
Very cool diner that's DTLA with a old school look. They even make a car bomb donuts. If you have a hangover, grab yourself the Hungover Helper
I ordered my favorite dish and a milkshake and neither of them came out the right way. For one I had regular fries instead of waffle fries which is what I paid for the reason dish cost the amount it does. Then my milkshake was completely melted which was very disappointing.
Their milkshakes are award winning for a reason. I got the vanilla chai
We went for the award winning milkshakes! After a late lunch we just needed something sweet so here we are grabbing the amazing milkshakes. We tried the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookie Dough Peanut Butter.
Great food. The Titanic BLT burger is fantastic. So is the Reuben.
This was the first vegan restaurant I’ve ever been too! The spicy chicken sandwich and radical ruben are classics. The best appetizer would probably be the buffalo styled special recipe wings. Everything here is delicious. The staff is also super friendly. Small disclaimer; the best time to eat here is in the afternoon or early evening. Wait times can be as long as 45 minutes to an hour on a busy night!
I'm so happy I was able to try The Chicago Diner out while I was passing through the city! The spinach artichoke dip was amazing! I've been craving some artichoke dip since going vegan, so thank you!! I also had the Cajun black bean burger and that was also so great. The house made cucumber lavender lemonade was super refreshing and we finished with the triple berry cheesecake to go. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable, even when they seemed really busy. Before left I even bought their cookbook so I could recreate some of the amazing recipes they serve here! Every time I'm in Chicago I might have to make a trip here, it's also been open since the 80's so it feels like vegan/vegetarian history!
This place is where you should go if you are taking your non veg freinds out to dinner. The buffalo seitan "wings" are amazing. I loved the ranch sauce served with it (your going to want to order extra
You have to try the Thai Chilli Wings and Brussel Sprouts. Absolute Heaven!!
I have never been to a vegan restaurant before and I can't wait to go back! The food was delicious and the wait staff was great. Very friendly & attentive. If you have never been to a vegan restaurant, you really should give this one a try.
Vegan or not (I am not), The Chicago Diner has something vegan that everyone can enjoy. The place has a very laid back and unpretentious vibe, service was friendly and efficient. I enjoyed their "Radical Reuben" - typical trimmings but with corned beef seitan (first timer) - and it was amazing! I love Reubens and I wouldn't be upset by eating this sandwich in place of traditional corned beef. Definitely coming back!
I’ve loved this joint for so long! Always worth the hour drive into the city. Service has ALWAYS been great and Grady was awesome today! The poutine is THE. BEST.
I love this place. There are a ton of great vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the city, and this is definitely in the top 3! My only slight complaint is within the 5 or 6 years I have been going to Chicago Diner (either location) the menu hasn't changed much. They have specials, but at this point It feels like I have tried everything.
This is my favorite vegan spot! The only reason 5
I went with my friend for her Birthday. It was our first time there. The food was delicious. She had the Reuben which was yummy. I had the Black Bean Burger which was delicious as well. Although I'm not vegan I will definitely return for another meal and we had great service.
Grady was an amazing server, great personality, knowledgeable on all items on the menu and overall great service. Food was delicious. Highly recommend it
The food and service was amazing. I couldn't tell that the food was vegan.
First time at Chicago Diner this place was amazing the food was so good very crowded food was amazing. The service was great also wish the restaurant was bigger.
While seating was a litte tight in the diner, that was more than offset by the great food at fair prices. I was amazed how varied the menu was. Even thought I am neither vegan or vegetarian, the Chicago Diner has something for everyone! I would definitely return if I am ever in the area again. I traveled by the Red Line rather than by car, but if I had come by car it looked like parking in the area might be a little challenging.
Loved this place. Staff were very friendly. Atmosphere was very palatable. Amble room. The vegan food was amazing. I’m not lying when I say just writing this review is making me salivate. We had the nachos, country fried “steak” and the bbq “wings” - all of which were astounding. Though our sojourn here was Brief, I fear I’ll always be haunted by those wings and no other may live up to them. Highly recommend.
Awesome place and great food! Had the seitan wings and a salad. The wings are like tenders and are pretty thick. The taco salad was supremely tasty. There are t shirts to sell and an expansive dessert menu. Go here!
One of my most favourite meals ever. Period. The fact that it was vegan was just an added bonus. Seriously good.
Love the food and the service
Great ginger ale! When you walk in you feel good and when you walk out you feel guilty after drinking that amazing shake! The staff is nice and friendly the price is a few extra bucks then other vegan spots but you get what you pay for. I always go for the Country fried steak with the Mac and veggies. I always take new people to try this place out! I did buy the cook book for that one thing and it was not in there :( guess I have to keep coming back for more.
Not a fan of saurkraut, but the rueben was sooooooooo fantastic!!
Great selection and incredible food. Definitely will go back. We had the Soul Bowl and the Cuban sandwich. Both were delicious.
Delicious food, the Reuben sandwich is TO DIE FOR and the country fried steak is so amazing. It’s a vegetarian/vegan heaven. We’ll be coming here every time we’re in Chicago.
My favorite restaurant in Chicago period. Not only because of the absolutely delicious food but also the friendliest staff around. And believe me it’s a great spot to be day drunk in the nice cozy bar section too, been there too many times to admit to my boss & wife.
Service was good. Music was good. Nice yet simple atmosphere. Food came in a very decent time frame as well. Great portions. And it was DELICIOUS!!!
Always great, had a vegan cookie dough shake and mixes berry cheesecake. It was ummm umm delicious.
This was my first time over here, and I would be lying if I said was displeased. In case someone doesn't understand, I mean this place is cool beans. The place is clean, friendly, warm and welcoming. Service is on point, and seemed like they enjoyed being there. The food was delicious and abundant. The server Jason was the best- Jason was accommodating and made sure that we were satisfied with what we recieved. Always with a smile and understanding :) Haha, speaking of the food- needed help with finishing the nachos. The thai stir fry was good too. But my favorite had to be the spicy chicken and the milkshakes. I wasn't 100% how to feel about milkshakes, but went for it anyway! I was not disappointed and even ordered one to go. Overall, I would definitely come back here sooner than later and recommend to anyone else looking for a great place for vegan food!
This place is amazing. I’ve always heard about how good it was, so when I got an opportunity to go Chicago, you can bet this was at the top of my list. The drinks were delicious and the jalapeño poppers they had as a special were super spicy but so-very-good. The service was great as well. I highly recommend this place, it’s within walking distance of Wrigley so get some delicious vegan food before the game!
Really awesome vegan food. The Thai chili wingz were my favorite due to its aweaome flavors and texture!
This restaurant has the best quality, service and atmosphere of any similar type in town. The staff was great, drinks were tasty, and the food was phenomenal. The milkshake was amazing and the gyros sandwich, the buffalo wings, the lentil meatloaf will drive you crazy. If you visit Chicago you must go to this restaurant.
I've been to countless vegan places in Chicago, and this still holds the top spot.
Delicious food, creative beer selection, attentive staff. Only gripe is that it's kind of noisy. Not cheap, not overly expensive either.
Excellent food. I've been here three times and at the second visit I became addicted to their "gyro" sandwich. It is so good. The French fries are also delicious as is their lemonade. Highly recommend for some amazing vegan or vegetarian food.
SO GOOD. It's clear why they're so popular -- thankfully there's a warm tent to wait in behind the building for busy times. They even sell a cookbook (which we haven't gotten, but is on the list) so you can make their delicious dishes at home.
We enjoyed our experience at Chicago Diner, though waiting around back in a cold pavilion for a table was not ideal! They have a great selection of food, but I felt the menu was all over the place, including American, Asian, South American, etc dishes. Food was decent quality, and we loved the sweet potato tofu burger as a substitute for a normal burger. Very cool and young atmosphere.
I tried the brunch combo which was just okay. I came in with high expectations since it was the number one rated restaurant on TripAdvisor. Maybe I just wasn't too familiar with vegetarian food. I think the other non-breakfast items would be a lot better. Friendly service. Not a lot of seating. Big portions. Good price. Clean bathrooms.
How can you not love this place? The vegan cinnamon rolls are to die for!
Th vegan friendly menu was easy to navigate. This is a beautiful cozy restaurant to take even a meat eating friend or family member to and you can surprise them that vegan options are just as delicious as their traditional dishes. The shakes are a MUST! The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and easy to just want to hang out. Easily one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants in the city!
So good. Great vegan options and please don't pass on the shakes. The cheesecake was incredible. We can't wait to come back.
A favorite place for tasty Vegan food. Very delicious. It has a cool atmosphere.
Always amazing. Nothing else to say. I'm the farthest thing from a vegan/vegetarian (I'm a butcher if that helps) and the food here is nothing less then spectacular. YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GET A CARROT CAKE MILKSHAKE. THAT IS ALL.
Went with my friends the other day, honestly it was really good. This is from a perspective of a person that needs to have meat in their life. I tried the BLT burger and honestly it was really delicious. First impressions were kinda iffy due to the hosts having an attitude like presence, but overall really good and perfect server.
Great food, awesome service, highly recommend
Amazing food, amazing staff, amazing atmosphere. I was blown away that at all the dishes on the menu were vegan!
Great place to visit for some nice vegan food. The price is a bit high, but you expect that at a vegan restaurant.
Food was great, server was friendly, my vegan friend was excited to have her first milkshake in years.
I love it here. It's got a true diner atmosphere and the food is delicious. I always start with a cinnamon roll! I've enjoyed all the breakfasty items here.
Only time I've ever gone to a vegan restaurant (I LOVE meat) with a vegan friend. It was delicious enough that I even finished the leftovers! Wouldn't do it every day, but makes me understand how people can be vegetarian / vegan.
Love Chicago Dinner! I've taken countless non-vegan friends here and they love it as well. They have a solid menu that never disappoints. The staff are always attentive and extremely accommodating. Even before I moved to Chicago whenever I visited I always made it a point to stop in one of their locstions. Chicago Dinner never disappoints!
Everything is Vegan. I recommend getting the Nachos
So delicious! I love this place! Although the layout is a tad crowded. I went on a first date here and there were times when it was a little hard to hear him. The food and service is always fantastic, though!
Fantastic food with great tasting vegan options, and I say that as a non vegan myself. Would highly suggest for anyone interested in vegan (or healthy food) done right
They were rather busy but we didn't wait too long. Warm atmosphere, good food, and friendly staff. My family prefers this location because of the diner feel, but if you're thinking of taking a date, coming for the drinks, or in a really large group I'd recommend the Logan's Square location. It might be a longer wait but that location has a bar, large booths for families and a more romantic ambience.
Awesome vegan diner food. Will appeal to meat eaters too!
Ordered the lentil loaf it’s very good but could use more sauce. Not too happy about paying another 1.00 for chips each time we eat here because you don’t give us enough in the first place with the amazing spinach dip. Shakes are good too!!
Excellent meat free menu. Food was delicious. Atmosphere was nice and clean, wait-staff very friendly. Speedy service. If you are here on vacation and wanting to experience the place, I recommend getting multiple dishes and sharing with family and friends. Highly recommend.
I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but everything I ate (a little bit from five different selections) was terrific. Drinks were killer too. Big shout out to Laura for making it an amazing first visit!
A busy but friendly place. Had the Radical Reuben (vegan) and it was the best reuben sandwich I've ever had, vegan or not. Really, really good. Generous portion sizes. Also has local beers on tap, - I tried the Daisycutter Pale Ale.
had vegan gyro and vegan chocolate cake! It was very good and fresh! A little bit pricey
Great food for a great price. The most delicious vegan shakes!
Plant-based perfection! An amazing meal -- nachos appetizer, entree and dessert!
The food never disappoints and always has so much flavor to offer. Great for casual meals and also great draft options from the area. If you are vegan, vegetarian, or even eat meat The Chicago Diner has great options overall.
Excellent food! Worth the 3 hour drive
Chicago diner is a place like no other. Everything is vegan/vegetarian the food is phenomenal and I've personally had most things on the menu and can't say I've found a bad dish yet. Chicago diner is a place you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the United States. It's an amazing place to try new things or get the comfort food you've been missing since changing your diet. No matter what an evening at Chicago diner is never wasted.
Being a meat eater, this was my 1st time eating a vegan sandwich & I must say, it was actually very tasty! I was impressed with the food however, seating in the middle of the restaurant is TOO crowded which is my only complaint!
It's such a wonderful experience to open a menu knowing you can eat anything in it. My non Vegan friends always are amazed at how delicious the food is. I'm not. It's the best.
vegetarian food... very tasty. This place will surprise you. There was fast and courteous service. It has a good feel to it.
Great food and service! Cramped seating, and long waits to get in!
This is by far the best vegan restaurant that we’ve been to! The food is amazing and very generously portioned, You will be sure to have left overs! The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the diverse neighborhood is great! Such a great area and LGBT community. We felt very comfortable here! :-)
We really enjoyed our meal! The staff was awesome and made us spend a great time! Recommended without hesitation. Thanks
Good location for delicious vegetarian food. Great place to chill, get away, eat some good food. The bill was fair. Feels similar to a cafe in Chicago I liked.
Normally I frequent the original location on Halsted as it is closer to me and has parking. Due to a Cubs game, the wait there was over an hour so we decided to go to the Logan Square location. I will be coming to this location from now on. The restaurant is a lot more spacious and you do not feel like everyone is having to run through you to get to tables. The food is just as good and the service is similar but the atmosphere is better and makes for a more enjoyable dining experience.
My first vegetarian restaurant, I'm not a fan... Meat is better. And I don't understand why most of the food is vegan too. Milkshake was very good though.
Nice atmosphere, the food is pretty decent and they have large portion sizes which is a major plus. So I would recommend this place
One of the best vegan places I have been.
Amazing vegan diner food, especially the milkshakes. The only downside is that this place is so popular there's almost always a long wait to get inside. Still, it's worth it to try the fantastic vegan meats. My carnivore friends love it too.
The chicken wings are amazing (they are not chicken but they taste like chicken). The hamburgers are also great. I wanted something different last time I went and they recommended the bowl of their scrambled tofu deluxe. It had black beans, quinoa, kale and tofu. Very healthy and hearty.
So worth visiting every chance I am in the area. Firstly, the food never disappoints. Every dish from salads to vegetarian meals, to cocktail or desserts, always full of flavor. Can always find what I'm in the mood for, I guarantee even non vegans will enjoy this restaurant. If driving, there is an alley type parking lot next to the building and street parking can also be found. Because many know how delicious it is to dine here, it can get busy and a wait area is available in back. Don't let that cozy inside fool you. Plenty of space at the table a booths, even grab a spot at the bar. While there are drinking establishments in the area, I suggest trying the Diner's offerings. Save some room for desert, cheesecake, a shake, or another type desert. The best vegetarian dining around and since the 1980s, still dependable.
Best vegan Reuben ever!! Best shakes ever! As soon as I have room, I'm sure the brownie sundae will be as perfect as everything else. Great service. Cute shop. Would reccomend to anyone with allergies.
Delicious Vegan and vegetarian food? Absolutely
This place has such a comfortable environment. The staff was very friendly. The food was great that even my non vegan friends enjoyed it. The mash is very good and the spicy sandwich delicious. The shakes are a bit too sweet for my taste. However, those that have a sweet tooth will not complain.
I like this location of Chicago Diner much better than the other location. Their food is always good (at either location). Wasn't a big fan of the Thai chili "wings" unfortunately (I ordered them thinking my non-vegetarian boyfriend would appreciate them, but I didn't even have him try them because they weren't very good and I didn't want him to get a bad impression of seitan), but this will always be my favorite vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the city. Portions are always generous and it's slightly less expensive than other vegetarian/vegan restaurants. There is such variety in the foods they offer, so I feel like I never get sick of their food. My family felt sick after eating the mac and tease one time: it seems like fake cheese oftentimes doesn't sit well with people.
Lots of choices. Blt burger, black bean burger and both white andbsweet potato fries are good. Skip the spicy chicken sandwich.
Mostly just came for a Valentine's Day milkshake. It was excellent. Super interesting shake. I definitely plan to come back to try some entree items. Friendly staff, too. Very warm host and hostess.
Meat free since '83, this place still feels like it's the 80s - but is also not merely the best vegetarian restaurant but a must-eat for anyone in Chicago. Get a shake and some rich seitan creation.
Can't go wrong with the gyro or Reuben and all of their shakes are so good!
Creative food and drink menu! Love that it’s a vegan restaurant (yet can still get dairy cheese if desired). Portion sizes are big, even off the kid’s menu. Thought the vegan ranch dressing was amazing! Dip your fries in it! Friendly service. Clean.
The food was very good. Portions are generous. Lots of options for both vegetarian and vegan. Milkshakes are delicious! Service was a bit slow, so make sure you allow for a little extra time.
Vegan wingz!! Get um. They are THE best. They also have tasty non dairy milk shakes for you lactose intolerant folks.
One of the best vegetarian restaurants in Chicago. I'm obsessed with there vegan gyro. Also the black bean burger with jalepenos and cheese is to die for. I have never been disappointed in anything I've ordered here.
Thee best vegan restaurant I have ever been too!!!! Everything was amazing!
Delicious food!! Great service!!
Some of the best vegan food I've had in a minute
Holy Cannolli!!! THis foods no joke, it legit tastes like meat! My SIL dragged me here with a line that seemed to be a mile long. I had a "roast beef" sandwich and took a bite with a discusted look on my face. THEN OMG!!! It was actually good!!! I'm almost scared and slightly skeptical lol.
Great vegan diner food. Good friendly service. What's not to like? Vegan cookie dough shake highly recommended!
My favorite restaurant in the city! I had the chik'n shawarma plate last time I believe, SO GOOD!! I always get really nice service and great food. I miss going out for breakfast, the breakfast portions are huge and creative
Classic vegan comfort food. We went twice on our recent trip to Chicago. It's busy but friendly. The kids dig their food too.
This place is delicious!! I had a milkshake, Reuben, and Mac & teese. It was all to die for! The atmosphere was very tasteful and hip. The only negative was the music was way too loud to have conversation, so everyone in the restaurant was yelling to speak. Great service.
I was in Chicago for 4 days and tried few vegan places. This place had hands down the best food and service. I went twice for their milkshakes and ended up buying their cookbook. Looking forward to making their amazing food at home.
Great food! Even if your not a vegetarian or a vegan they make the food so good that you forget it is! Customer service was good.
The Ruben sandwich is to die for! I kept having to check to see if it was real meat! I can't believe that it's all vegetarian. Love this place. I will be taking my twin daughters there for their birthday next week!
Great draft selection. The bar was a bit small. Major props for the VHS collection.
I don’t know how many times I googled the menu before making the trip, but it couldn’t have prepared me for what my tastebuds were about to enjoy. I had the BEST jalapeño poppers I’ve ever tried AND THEY WERE VEGAN. I had a tasty Reuben and Mac and cheese - FANTASTIC. I don’t recommend the cheesecake, it wasn’t my favorite. BUT they made up for that one with the mint milkshake!
Loved the food but the staff underperformed at the Boystown location--what a difference from the location in Logan Square!!! I was racially profiled when I lunched there with 2 other latinx friends: the food runner gave us our bill and our waitress took the bill back and added 20% gratuity to our cards on her own for a party of three without our consent. No tip, no sale.
The service was great. The food was delicious and the portions were huge. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Chicago
Most bomb vegan food! Nice location, friendly staff. It took a little bit to get our order in, but the food came out really fast even though they were relatively busy!
I try to visit here every time I come to Chicago. It's a great vegan/vegetarian restaurant with some of the most delicious comfort food you'll ever have. No hype, just delicious.
Pleasant atmosphere and great food. Had their tumeric ginger soda which was awesome as well. Definitely recommend checking them out.
First time here today, had the titanic BLT with waffle fries. Very tasty food and friendly staff. Will be going back to try more options.
Good ethical food. Nice people. Reminds me of Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz.
Long wait times but it’s because they have amazing food. This the classic vegan place in Chicago and a must visit for any traveling vegan. You won’t eat healthy here but you’ll eat good. I go here every time I can.
The Taco salad was on spot, you would never had guessed it was vegan, it could have used a lime squeeze. The service was excellent, thank you Cody for making my first visit here so pleasant that I will definitely come back.
I went on my birthday and ordered the S.U.V (Straight Up Veggie Sandwich) and absolutely loved it. The Bloody Mary was good, and my daughter enjoyed her pancakes! We'll be back!
One of my favorite locations for quality Vegan food. Got there near five, it wasn't very busy. The place has an awesome feel to it. Food is like a restaurant in Louisville I liked.
The food was so good! I was surprised that their mock meat selection was so spot on delicious.
Horrible service. Really slow and dead staff. Someone needs to hire some people that actually like their job. Food is delicious though
Great food and friendly service!
My vegan wife and I, the not so vegan, make this one of our regular dinner destinations. The food is amazing. If you're like me and eat everything, you'll find this menu very amenable. And the food is enough to make you realize the benefits of such a diet.
Great place for veggie eaters to get some great tasting food that reminds you of your meat eating days.
Service was good. Got the shawarma and the shawarma was decent but the lita was a dissapointment pitas shouldn't be fried!! And it should have a pocket. Also was a but disappointed with the garnish on the shawarma plate ( I usually would care about garnish) tomatoes looked badly cut and where dry from sitting for a while. And this part was especially disappointing because this is a vegan place and all the food is "veggy" based. But the actual veggies that are served look substandard!
WOW - vegan comfort food at it’s finest. Seitan lovers - try the vegan Thai Chile wings!
One of the best vegan experiences I’ve had. I ate here. While ago so I can’t remember what I had but I tried 4 entrees (my friends) and love every one of them. Even my carnivore friends said they couldn’t tell the difference between vegan meat and real meat.
i literally am in the middle of my meal to post that this is the best restaurant i've ever been to omfg
Just wow. Haven't had that kind of comfort food in so long and to have all vegan options is fantastic. Will be back next time I'm in Chicago!
Very delicious vegan food! Their vegan Ruben sandwich is a triillion times better than a regular one!!Please visit with friends n family and have a very delicious meal!..It's a very busy, happening place!!Staff is wonderful too!!
There's a lot of great vegan food in Chicago. But this place is my go to! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's all straight up dynamite!
Good food and great service. I had the Reuben with a side of sweet potato fries. I can’t wait to try more dishes.
I came here for the famous vegan milkshakes and the food over exceeded my expectations. My 10 year old daughter told me it’s officially her favorite restaurant now. Great relaxed casual atmosphere too. Thanks for making our mommy daughter dinner perfect.
5 words: Y. U. M. M. Y!!! I had the chicken fried steak, which comes with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes although they're hidden underneath the massive steak in the accompanying pic. I also got a side of mac & cheese and drank the cucumber lavender lemonade. Over half of my meal went home with me so no worries about portions. And my server, Nathan, was a doll. Still pleasantly puzzled by this all-vegan find with soooo many options. Heading back to TX tomorrow afternoon but plan to come by for a second sitting if at all possible. I'd like to try a milkshake and the stroganoff poutine.
Impressive!!! Fully enjoyable!!! Awesome atmosphere and the food was great!
Cozy and cute. Honestly....really good vegetarian options! Plus, everyone feels welcomed here....no matter who you are.
Great food great staff awesome location
Great food! There are lots of gluten free options here, including gluten free burger buns. Make sure to ask for the gluten free menu!
First time visiting Chicago. This place was amazing. Everything was delicious. The milkshake we got for dessert was to die for.
Awesome spot with great food. You'll forget you're eating vegan at this spot. Oh and you NEED to get a milk(less)shake. It's incredible
I love the food that's not trying to be something else (which is a very small portion of the menu). Terrible service in general, but the blonde manager on duty last week was AMAZING and made my week.
Happy Vegan here- LOVED IT!
Great vegetarian food! My girlfriend and I have been here several times. It's one of her favorite restaurants in Chicago. The spicy chicken sandwich is always great and the milkshakes are incredible.
I like this location better than in Logan Square. The server's are more friendly and welcoming. The service is fast and the food tastes amazing!
Food there is outstanding very good but you might have to eat with your eyes closed
Really good vegan - vegetarian place with awesome food and service. Old vhs playing classics on the tube tv. Definitely go if you haven't been.
Excellent food ....cool staff
