Best burger in the U.S. ? I cant agree, but it is very good. Losing a star because they havent figured out how to expedite their service. See the problem is, when you have media claims of the best burger and have 4 hour wait lines, it hypes the expectation which fell short for me.

Jeremiah Burkhardt

Wow. Obviously have to get the burger. The loaded fries were good too. The wait staff was super helpful, without being intrusive. Will definitely be back

Bonnie Bradbury

Excellent customer service and great food!! We were told to try the restaurant and and we weren't disappointed.

kimberly ashley

Awesome burgers and ambiance! I was there with my relatives from Indonesia.

Keith Weber

There is always a wait at this restaurant... But boy its worth the wait, the Omelette was amazing so fluffy and thick with the right amount of fillings. (Goat Cheese and fancy onions) The taste is well balanced. The Rootbeer is on Draft and a very solid soda.

Daniel Graves

Probably the best burgers I've ever had. I got the double (actually has 3 patties) and added the bacon (literally to die for, melts in your mouth) and egg! The fries were great too. Very cool vibe and atmosphere with great music. The wait times can be crazy, so go early to put your name in and grab a drink next door. It's worth it, trust me

Keith Bailey

The food was delicious and the services were also quick. The place was decent with amazing infrastructure. If i talk about the staff was also friendly and cooperative. The price was reasonable too.

Collin Nordine

Best bacon of all time, basically just slabs of pork belly peppered glazed and cooked to perfection. Period.

Cathy Schlegel

We were there at 5 on a Wednesday. We were seated within 15 minutes. Service was great, very nice and attentive. We both had the burger. It was good, but not great. It was too salty, and the bun was boring. But the cheese, onions and pickles were good. Fries were decent, but again, salty. The kale salad was quite good though, and I don't like kale at all!

Michael Langwell

One of the best burger I've ever had. The wait staff was kind, friendly and fun!

Tasha Massman

I love Au Cheval! It's amazing! I've never had a bad thing. Get the burger (duh!) But don't forget the fries with all the sauces and an egg for good measure. Brought the boyfriend for his first bone marrow taste and that beef cheek jam is out of this world!!

Joseph Song

The burger here is exceptional, of the highest quality, the utmost, superlative. We got the doubles cheeseburger (it's actually three patties. The single cheeseburger is two. I don't know whg they named it as such) with egg and bacon. Everything melded beautifully. We asked for yellow mustard on the side and that just helped cut through everything and introduced a bit more acid. It was phenomenal. The wings were pretty great too! Pro tip though, arrive before 5 pm or wait for a seat at the bar to cut wait times. Even then... You might be waiting an hour or more. Good luck. It's worth it.

Peter van Beek

The best burger I can remember eating. I was recommended it by a Chicago Foodie so my expectations were high...but it turned out not high enough. This burger rocks. I had a regular cheese burger with bacon (get the bacon!) and I didn’t want it to end. Deserves a 6th star.

Sweatbucket

Great burger. Fast service. Friends recommended this restaurant for the burger + add bacon, so we did just that! We were told that there's usually a wait but luckily it opens pretty early. We around around 10:30/11 and were advised it'd be about a 15-30 min wait but got a text after about 5-7 minutes. We only got the burger, its good to share if you aren't super hungry, was very tender and soft, just a little salty for my liking.

Braden

Great burger. Not life changing, so keep your expectations in check. Also, don’t show up thinking you’ll get in right away, a multiple hour wait is common. Get your name on the list and explore West Loop area.

Philip McGilvray

You have to be ready for Au Cheval. The burgers are huge, and verge on the point of too savory... in the best way. The chicken is juicy, yet crispy; an impressive feat. Especially since you get basically the whole chicken!!! Make sure to put your name in an hour before you’re hungry! Service is quick and professional. Good beer list.

Brandon Mair

Food hear was amazing. Chicken had really good flavor and cheeseburger

Kelly Junker

So. Cocktails are AMAZING! And worth it. Wait was not bad. Went nextdoor and had a drink waiting for a text when ready to seat us. Matzaball soup was great. Burgers were good. Split one with your significant other. The negative, salt... so much salt. My joints hurt. So tell them easy on the SALT. That's why only 4 stars. Overall, absolutely worth it.

James Marlow

The only place i've ever been where you have to reserve ahead of time to get a spot at the bar (I sat down there and waited a good ten minutes before they clued me in on this and kicked me out). Plenty of other good burger joints where you don't have to go through all the rigmarole to eat there.

Daniel Kamiński

Very good cheeseburger, worth the hour wait. Good vibe too

harley grandin

Jeremy the host and Julia our waitress were extremely accommodating and the food does indeed live up to the hype. Obviously the burgers and chicken wings were amazing. Cocktails weren’t too sweet nor were they unnecessarily complex. The local pilsner was one of the best I’ve had.

C Cunningham

It was a pretty dam good burger. The fries were great too. Fast, friendly service. No wait when we were there.

Russ Webster

Fantastic, although perhaps not the best, burger I've ever had. Fries could have been a tad crunchier, but the aioli was amazing. Definitely looking forward to coming back to try their other offerings. Can probably split burger and fries and be fine if not too hungry. 45 minute wait on a Tuesday late evening (945pm).

Sean Werner

Single cheeseburger was awesome. Loved that the single is actually two patties for more flavor town. So great that it's open until 1am weeknights for late night. That asian sticky fried chicken dish is so fire I cant even. Could have done without the fries, I was full. Cool spot

Phillip Robinson

This place isn't for those looking for a quick bite or those who just got their 30-day chip from anger management. YOU WILL BE WAITING 2 to 3 hours. However, once you sit down and place your order and the food arrives, relax and just let go. Don't fight it. Give in to the deliciousness. The burger is absolutely delicious. Do yourself a favor and order it with the bacon and egg.

Deidre Bielicka

This place is said to have the best burger. The burger was great for sure. However, the general Jane's chicken.....omg. Don't pass that one up. We also had the thick cut bacon. So good. Bloody Mary was one of the best I've had.

Pat Diaz

Highly recommended. Paid for parking in nearby lot. Expected wait time 90 minutes, so I planned to explore neighborhood, but a seat at the bar opened in 30 minutes (yay)- text message notification available. Quick service considering how busy it was. Watched organized chaos and spoke with friendly manager while waiting; saw my own meal prepared. Excellent burger w/bacon, fries, salad; no drinks ordered .Learned that there is also Small Cheval in another part of town. Will definitely return.

Hannah Berg

As much as this burger is hyped, it was very good and worth trying the restaurant. The fries were delicious! Staff was also great! We went Sunday morning and the wait time was about 10 - 15 mins.

Haithum Chughtai

High recommend. My wait time was quoted 2 hours but managed to get counter seating after 1. I loved the atmosphere, the style and decor of seating, and lighting set a good mood. The service was excellent and friendly, good hosts. The burger was delicious though I would say rich so it can leave you feeling heavy, I had a double with bacon which is thick. The French Fries and dip was too salty for my cousin so the courteous fry cook made us a new batch after asking us, very nice of her. The beer was fresh. I recommend counter seating so you can see them in action and appreciate their hard work. I do think this is one of the better burgers I’ve had, top 5. Thanks!

Michael Underwood

Food is excellent. So romantic and perfect for a special night out. Well, if you're looking for a romantic paradise to take your partner you must take them here! Would highly recommend this place. Lots of choices. The wait staff here knows everything about food. Worth every penny. Highly recommend. Neat atmosphere, great food. Hands down!

Chris Payne

Flew in on a Sunday for a work trip and I’ve heard about this place from a friend. I when I arrived I realized that I’ve walked passed this place so many times without knowing it had one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The wait on Sunday evening was quick. I tried to go back on a Friday and the wait was 3hrs. I didn’t want to wait that long so I went to their other location.

Roman Grinblat

One of the top 10 burgers I have ever had in my life. This is no hype this is pure flavor

Brooks Fleming

Best burger in Chicago. Well worth the wait and the price. Meat melts in your mouth and is full of flavor. Make sure to go with the double and egg on top. I have and will be back many times in the future.

Kevin Brown

Lived up to its hype and is now on my list of must visits when in Chicago. Good was amazing. Great service. Fun atmosphere

Marijana Ignjatovic

The burgers really are awesome and so is everything on the side. Rather casual places, and quite small. Happily we didnt have to wait too long, although it was quite crowded in the mid-afternoon. Service was meh, but then the crowds are something else. Would recommend if you have the patience to wait for a table.

Andres Gandara

The best burger and bacon in town! Also the bone marrow and the fries are excellent. Most of the time is very busy, so keep that in mind.

Eric Lambert

Great bone marrow, great hash browns with duck heart gravy and egg. Bacon outta this world! The burger was fantastic, but we had the loyalist burger the night before and I liked it better. However, the environment at Au Cheval is way better! Tim was great.

Theresa Dargis

Absolutely amazing food! I got a recommendation to come here and I am so glad I did. I got the bone marrow and the single cheeseburger with bacon. Very glad I tried the marrow, it was buttery and decadent and the beef cheek jelly that came with it was sweet and savory! The burger was perfectly cooked, with a thick slab of bacon and it was so juicy. One of the best meals I have ever had!

Amanda Root

Worth it... Was in Chicago for a work trip and had everyone I knew tell me to make a stop at Au Cheval. I hadn’t been before so of course I didn’t know that along with the tables, the bar top was not first come first served. You’ve gotta wait. Makes sense though! So I walked in around 6:30 on a Saturday night, alone, and was quoted an hour and a half wait. Fine, I didn’t have anything better to do than wait for what would become the most flavorful cheeseburger known. There are a ton of other restaurants and bars around so I picked one, had a glass of wine, and about an hour later was sent a text saying my seat was ready. That feature is really nice to be able to give your number and wait somewhere else since Au Cheval is not large inside. I was seated at the bar top, gazing across the small open kitchen. It was fun to watch the chefs assemble burgers, fry fries, and make some equally as awesome looking desserts. I was greeted fairly quickly and ordered right away as I knew I wanted that single cheeseburger. Comes medium but you can get it well done, no other ways though besides the two preparations. The glorious CB arrived and damn, what a treat. Insanely flavorful meat, the perfect cheese, a tangy house sauce and excellent pickles. Well worth the wait.

K. Young

Au Cheval was great, I loved the single burger with an egg. The bun was soft and buttery and the patty was juicy. The restaurant had a chill vibe, although the music was a little too loud. Service was awesome, the staff was nice and friendly. We came here on a recommendation of a friend and I’m glad I did. It was the best Chicago dining experience and would recommend this place to my friends and family.

Joseph Burger

Everything and I mean EVERYTHING was fantastic. The burger deserves the reputation it has. Super juicy, decadent, perfectly cooked. The bun is nice and toasted and does not get soggy like most burger buns. The fries are also some of the best fries ever, they still have the potato taste that fresh cut fries have but they are cooked properly unlike most and are not soaked with oil but instead are nice and crispy. The bacon is hands down one of the best parts, we got it as a side and not on the burger. Getting the bacon on the side allows it to be truly enjoyed for how perfectly it is prepared. Finally we tried the fried chicken which is definitely worth trying. Yes Au Cheval is known for their burgers but do not let the chicken escape, your taste buds will thank you. All that being said, the ambiance is very nice and quaint even with the hustle and bustle of the being the best restaurant in Chicago. With this in mind obviously be prepared for a long wait for a table(1-3 hours). Take the time to explore the nearby city and all it has to offer and before you know it your table will be ready.

Andrea Ko

I find reviewing Au Cheval a little bit challenging to be honest. Why? Because the food is absolutely great. I’m gonna start with the line. Yes, most of the time you will have to wait a few minutes maybe an hour in the worst case but you already knew it. Ambient, small and cozy with a great atmosphere. Stuff, they can do better but still helpful. Food, another level. The Burger is the best i have ever had(comparing to all the famous burger places in Chicago) and i strongly believe it deserves its reputation. Also the chicken is amazing too. Me personally, I would wait on the line for that burger!

Ryan Bolduan

Quite good, but not nearly as good as I was led to believe. We got lucky, there wasn't any significant wait, but the restaurant size makes it clear that could be a problem. The Kale Caesar was exceptional, with the sourdough breadcrumbs making the salad. The burger, for all its hype was merely okay. The flavors were generally right, but the meat was significantly over seasoned. Salt should elevate the dish, not define it. The fries were solid, but nothing to write home about. I was not tremendously impressed with the servers knowledge of the local beers. As an out of stater, this was a nice opportunity to highlight what's great. I have no idea what's great because the server wasn't well versed enough to talk about much. The final recommendation was pretty pedestrian. Am I glad I went? You bet, it let me know just how good my local Au Cheval inspired burger really is.

Natalie Kremer

The burger wash easily the best I ever had! Great beer selection, too!

Danny Le

When you have all the right ingredients seasoned and cooked to perfection, you get Au Cheval’s burger. The bacon is a must add. It’s so thick it’s more pork belly than bacon, but who would complain about that. Share an order fries because the garlic aoli will step up the fries at least 2 bars. The draft root beer was one of the best I have had in a while and it goes well with the perfect burger. The staff was fast, friendly, and provided amazing service.

Masiel Porben

The burgers might be worth it but the waiting and queuing experience clearly weren’t. Took us over 4hrs 20mins to be seated, whilst regularly being told we were next in line... by the time you seat to eat the wait has been too annoying

Shane Davidson

One of my favorite burgers in Chicago. You have to try it at least once and I promise you won’t leave without wanting another.

Remi Jr. Ojo

Oh My Lord. Someone mentioned that this might be the best burger in America.... As far as I'm concerned, holy it was AMAZING. Probably the best burger I think I've probably had in my life. All of the food was incredible. Because of the popularity of this place, would recommend putting your name down on the wait list and exploring around the area. I think we roamed for 1.5 hours before being messaged back. Was not bad as we went into it expecting a long wait. Enjoy!

Alexis Martinez

The female bartender today was discriminating. She made a wrong drink for someone today and offered it to a couple sitting down next to me but they declined it. Skipped me. A few minutes later someone else sat down and offered the drink to her. Rude brunette.

Yibin Yang

The renowned "Best Burger in the US" is indeed the best burger I've had in the US. The meat is perfectly cooked, and the added half fry egg and thick bacon really gave the burger a sinfully satisfying texture and taste.

Tim Askelson

This is a great neighborhood bar and grill. I thought it was pretty awesome that they were playing music on a reel to reel. The bacon cheeseburger comes with two 4 oz. patties cooked perfectly with nicely cooked pork belly that's been cured and braised just right for the perfect texture along with a good deli pickle for a nice crunch. The cheese is like a sauce that finds it's way into each bite and the fresh baked bun is soft enough but structurally sound on the bottom to support this campaign through the finish.

Shaan Somani

The indisputable best burger in Chicago. Highly recommend coming during off hours or coming in a small group, otherwise you can expect to be waiting for a few hours. Absolutely love the classic diner aesthetic. Having had the burger multiple times before, I opted for the breakfast hash with a side of bacon (which are an absolute MUST). Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly. I can't wait to come back!

Mike Rizzo

Get yourself to Au Cheval to get the best burger in the city. You cannot go wrong here. From the fries to the pickles and their burgers. A single is a double and a double is a triple. The single/double is more than enough for me with the addition of the thick cut bacon which really is as thick as one of the patties. The bun is so soft and perfect for the burger. Holds up to the ooey gooey juiciness right to the last bite. Burgers are cooked one way. A medium or sorts. You can order it well done but please don’t do that or st least in my presence. The fries were great with their garlic aioli and a side of bread and butter pickles hit the spot. Very good Bloody Mary to wash everything down. I have had them at 1am and 1pm and they are exactly the same and always amazing. Do yourself a favor and get there already.

Nick Redmond

The burger was amazing! Great atmosphere and music. Be prepared for a long wait time, but it is absolutely worth it

Josh Morof

Most burgers don’t always live up to the hype. This one does. Seriously one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Be prepared for a wait, but one that is definitely worth it. And come hungry. This place does not disappoint!

Josh B

What are you waiting for? Go here... Get the double with bacon and egg and you won't regret it. Chicken is also bomb. Wait is always super long but hang around and grab a bar stool for quicker service.

Jeremy

This was the best burger I have ever placed in or around my mouth. Cannot believe how much flavor is packed into this burger. Single is really a double, double is a quad. Added some egg and bacon to send this burger over the edge. Will be coming back soon to enjoy again.

Daisy Miller

Great food but really weird waiters. I'm 90% sure my waiter was high out of his mind the other day. I asked for ranch to go with my fries and he responded that "Ranch is the Devil's sperm." My burger was awesome and the cocktails are great! Also a very convenient location near the highway and right off a bus route! Love this area and love their food. Better weed (pun intended) out your staff though.

Sunit Patel

The 2 hour wait on a Friday night was well worth it. Amazing cheeseburger, the fries with garlic aioli was the best ever. Service was quick. Definitely the best burger in Chicago.

Taylor Schwarz

One of the best burgers if not the best I've ever had. Awesome staff, be sure to get your name on the list because this place is very popular. They quoted us about 3 hours however we received our table under 90 minutes. Will definitely be back.

Kelly Lim

Literally the best burger I've ever had. A single burger has 2 patties, and a double has 3 patties. Keep that in mind. Get the bacon as it was amazing also. Great selection of drinks and knowledgeable staff who explained everything. A must go to Everytime I'm back in Chicago.

Nicole Morgan

Ate here for the first time today and loved it! Got the single cheeseburger with bacon- amazing! We went at lunch and it was very busy but we someone had just canceled a bar spot so we got right in!

Roberto Andaya

Possibly the most hyped burger place in Chicago. It is very popular and usually has a 2-3 hr wait that has to be reserved in person. The food is good but some people make it sound life changing. Would recommend other restaurants around the area if willing to wait for this one

Brian Glassman

With a burger as enchanting as it is elusive, Au Cheval is a must-visit for those seeking the bovine-in-a-bun bliss. Perfection is an understatement, a sentiment shared by countless others—with wait times pushing several hours during the dinner rush. But bring a lawn chair, no reservations accepted and you'll be waiting quite awhile most nights. My recommendation? Go Tuesday or Wednesday well before the dinner rush. Settle in, order a cold beer, and prepare for a heavenly experience. 3000/5 stars.

Jackson Guan

This is my second time at Au Cheval. After the incredible experience my firs time last year, I just had to come back to make sure it wasn't a fluke. This is the real deal. Best burger I've had-hands down. From bun to bun, every part of this beauty works in unison to create a delicious experience in your mouth that is nostalgic to the classic cheese burgers you are accustomed to, but elevated to another level. I had the cheese burger with bacon and egg. I would recommend it that way because all the pieces worked so well together.

Clyfford Still

Waited about an hour to get a table for two which wasn't too bad. They have some great beers you can sip on as you ogle people's food and mouth "I want that" to your friend.

Peter Juberg

Ate here for the first time today and loved it! Got the single cheeseburger with bacon- amazing! We went at lunch and it was very busy but we someone had just canceled a bar spot so we got right in!

Gabrielle B

The burger was almost perfect. There was just too much salt in some spots but the meat was cooked just right and was so delicious! The service was amazing too. The music could also be turned down a notch because we had to yell to hear each other.

Collin Malaney

If you can muster the wait times, this place is worth it. Yes, get the burger, but don't miss out on things like the bone marrow or dessert items. And, in my opinion, call me crazy, but the burger is better sans bacon.

Sandra O'Connor

Stopped in at 11:30 for a business lunch. We were seated quickly and served promptly. We shared a plate of the tick cut bacon and ordered burgers. Quite possibly the best bacon I've ever had and fantastic burgers. One our party ordered a burger off the gluten free menu and we were not disappointed! Great atmosphere, reasonable price point. 10/10, would die for bacon again.

Bobby Hall

Best burger in Chicago and maybe anywhere. Service was excellent as well. Just be ready for a long wait or go later in the evening.

Ma Luisa Romo

Believe the reviews about craving for more. If you are the person who don’t like to wait in line for more than 20 minutes. My recommendation is earliest morning.

JT Byrne

Burgers are just as good as the small chevals unless you get bacon and the egg then Au Chevals worth the wait... But that bologna sandwich!! Now that's worth the wait and they don't sell those at the small chevals so... Five star!

Jason

It was alright. The burgers were very juicy and delicious. Service staff was very kind and courteous. I just wish the wait wasn't so long and the music wasn't so loud. I was having a hard time understanding what my waiter said as he was helping me with my order. Worth the visit? Yes it was a good experience. Over-hyped? I think a little.

Eric Lambert

Great bone marrow, great hash browns with duck heart gravy and egg. Bacon outta this world! The burger was fantastic, but we had the loyalist burger the night before and I liked it better. However, the environment at Au Cheval is way better! Tim was great.

Angie A

The best burger I've ever had in my entire life so far, and man have I had my fair share of burgers. I enjoyed the seasoning, aioli sauce, pickles, juicy beef..all of it. It seemed to get better with each bite. I'll likely be dreaming about it til next time Chicago ;).

Adam Litzenberger

Grab a beverage at the bar and prepare for a minimum 30 minute wait. Hearty burgers. A single burger is actually a double, and the double is triple. Cool space. Friendly staff. Loud music.

Brian King

Finally visited Au Cheval for my birthday with my wife and in-laws. One of the best burgers (if not the best) I've ever eaten. Delicious eating all around, to be honest. We went at 17:00 (5:00pm) which is early for us to eat, however, we were able to beat the rush with only a 20 minute wait to be seated. When we were leaving the wait was upwards of 2.5 to 3 hours and to be honest I would have waited this long to eat. We started off with the roasted marrow bones with beef cheek marmalade which was a perfect mix of savory with a hint of sweet and very rich flavor. We also shared a crispy potato hash with duck heart gravy which was phenomenal as well. I ordered the double cheeseburger (note: single cheeseburger has 2 patties, double has 3) with the thick (note: very thick and delicious) bacon and over medium egg. I highly suggest Au Cheval regardless of the wait and will be back as soon as I can!

Karin Anderson

Basic but extremely satisfying cheeseburger. The crowds attest to the success.

Josh Reid

The burger is worth the wait. Order a single, arrives in minutes, wash it down with a refreshing beer and thank me later. Staff is friendly. This place has it going on.

Timothy Johnson

I have NEVER experienced anything like this before. Staff is AMAZING! Entrees are INCREDIBLE! Need I say more?

Ryan Gabrielli

I normally try to temper my expectations when going to a highly reviewed restaurant, but I just couldn’t contain my excitement to finally trying this place. With the guidance of some very helpful colleagues we submit our names 2 hours in advance and you can check your status in line via text message. We waited about 2 hours on a Saturday before a spot was ready for us. The place is dark and small but it really helped set the tone for the night. The place was so lively and had an upbeat atmosphere. started the evening off with some drinks. They make a pretty good version of a daiquiri, and they have a unique beer selection. We shared the bone marrow plate to start then had their burgers to finish. I would highly recommend adding on the egg and bacon as it compliments the burger so well. As many have noted, I would say that this was one of the best burgers I have ever had. It was juicy, seasoned well, had tons of flavor and the bun help up really well. Very impressed with Restaurant and I hope to come back soon.

Ben Charoenwong

One of the best classic american style burgers. No frills and pure excellence.

Kris Peterson

So, so, so good. I don't even know where to start. The food is really beyond words. We had the Chopped Chicken Livers with Toast, the Bologna Sandwich, a burger, and dessert and there wasn't one thing that was better than the other. My recommendation is that you go early (we went at 11 am and managed to get seated right away), order a bunch of things to share, and plan on not eating for the rest of the day. A word of caution: the lines at night are often very, very long. We tried to go 4 times when we were in Chicago and the minimum wait after 4 pm was 2-3 hours.

Varun Sudarsanan

The patty was a bit too salty for my liking. That made it not worth the 1 hr wait. The fries and garlic dip was very good.

Jennifer Brown

Worth the wait!! Burger is always top notch. Tried the chilaquiles on brunch menu today send they were phenomenal. Fast service once you're seated. Don't skip this place!!

TY

By far one of the best burgers I've ever had. Got here right when it open to beat the crowd...was worth it. Service was friendly, the vibe was nice...a little dim. But the burger...worth the price of admission. Will return when I'm back in Chicago.

Krissy Coles

Small restaurant so get there early. Very good food. Freshly made.

Tim Erichson

Great burger and hash browns. Gotta get the egg and bacon on top.

Leah Hoskins

Very cool experience. Busy place! Unique theme and great music and vibe. The burger was one of the best I've had. AND AMAZING PICKLES!! Pickleback shot was delicious and necessary. Service lacked a little bit but I think it was just our server having an off night. We will be back!!

Alex Starnes

Wow. I’m always skeptical of places with such hype, but i can gladly say that this place really does live up to it. Not only was the food good, the staff were super nice and the overall experience was enjoyable. Love the small restaurant feel you get. I will say that the wait can be awful, but once you get seated, everything happens quickly. Would recommend.

Greg Rempe

Wow, after years of reading how great this place was I was concerned that it would not live up to the hype and I was also concerned that I was going to have to wait 3 hours to get a cheeseburger. However, showing up at 10 a.m. on a Sunday must have made a lot of difference as it relates to the waiting in line. I will seated at the bar immediately and, it was extremely great to find out, that the burger delivered above expectation. Watching all those guys work behind the line is a symphony of Awesomeness.

Lisa Huerta

Try any of burgers with egg! It's delicious! Loved this place. Very cozy and staff is amazing.

Anderl A

We enjoyed not only the great food but also watching the cooking team preparing tons of tasty cheeseburger!! A lots of different lovey beers too.

Seth Lancaster

Been going for here years. Every time delicious. Burger with bacon and old fashion a great choice.

Patricia Ramsey

Hands down the best burger place in Chicago. Please be sure that there will be long waits (really, like at least an hour or two) but it is all worth it. You might find the burgers

Cris Funk

We'd read the reviews on their burgers and were cautiously optimistic. They're delicious and hands down one of the best burgers I've had in a restaurant. To top it off, their bacon was absolutely perfect. We spoke of it for days. Great vibe, excellent service and staff. Make reservations in advance or prepare for a long wait. They'll take your name and number and text you when your table is ready. Best part? You can text them for updates on where your place in the order is, so if you're looking to run errands while you wait it's easily done.

Stephen Marquette

Outstanding burger in a cool Chicago neighborhood. Juicy, well cooked, crispy bacon and fries coupled with a solid local beer list round out this place. The atmosphere is equally good!

Jako

One of the best burgers I have ever eaten. This is not an exaggeration. The service is very good. The location is small and the wait times are very long. Expect 1 hour to 3 hour + wait times

Tim Iles

Service was great, get there early if going to brunch. Arrived at 10:10 and got the last open table. Burger is amazing, add bacon (duh!).

Omar Javed

Average burgers and poor service. Had to ask for refill three times and not even a single checkin by server on food. Frankly, looks like the restaurant is driving only on tourists visiting Chicago from referrals. For someone who lives here, there are easily better options with no wait.

Thang Phan

Best burgers in Chicago. You can taste all the ingredients but they synergize very well. The egg foie gra is good but very rich.

Luca Luxury

First time there yesterday. I had the kale salad and the bone marrow. It was outstanding. I saw a very interesting item on the menu which was pork porter house. I ask the waitress if I could order it and she replayed I have to ask the chef. I was told they only serve one of them a day. I was the lucky one to get it. Wow it was the best thing I ate.. Would go back again.

Quintin Williams

Burger used to be amazing. Had one tonight, super dry. Maybe it was an off night. I struggled to eat half of my burger and fries. Told server I’ve been coming for years and this was legit the first time I was ever disappointed but she didn’t really care. Oh well.

Bethany Jengic

Delicious! If you go here you have to try the cheeseburger which has been on multiple lists of best burger! They seem to have other entrees that sound amazing, so looking forward to go back and try more! Definitely recommend going on a weekday around 1 or 2, we only waited 30 minutes. If you go around dinner time or on the weekend you're looking at 2 to 3 hour wait.

Max

This place totally meets the hype. Don’t bring a date here. I’m serious. You’ll walk out satisfied but full and miserable. Best burger I’ve ever eaten. Fries were incredible. Chilaquiles were not authentic but still amazing. Just a spectacular meal overall. Seriously, come on leg day or after you’ve prepped for a half marathon and just go to town all the amazing food they have to offer.

Stephen Early

I consider myself quite the burger connoisseur, and this is without a doubt the best burger I’ve every had. The bun and meat were amazing, but to also top it with the most perfectly fried egg, and ridiculously thick bacon took this burger to the number one spot in my heart. I connected with this burger on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. I will never eat another burger the same way.

Mary Albrecht

I can't say enough about the burger, wings and fries with garlic aioli I just ate. The most tender, juiciest burger and the sauce it comes with is just amazing! I had a rootbeer that is made on site and again to die for. Service was so pleasant. Peyton gave such great service! This place ruined burgers for me. No burger will ever compare. Seriously....its worth the trip and $$$$.

Foster Ayala

The burger was incredible, baked entirely and delicious flavor. The food was great, and the beer was fire. The chef is the most professional and honest man. Thank you, you made our experience here at Au Cheval pleasure and delightful.

k shea

Loved the burger and fries here. The fries are made with beef fat, which is hard to come by these days. It really does make the perfect fry. If you can, try to go on a week day in the early afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Nely Rozaly

Good place for burger. I like this place bc it's no-nonsense. Their burgers are made of quality ingredients complete with approriate amounts of bun, arugula, cheddar, ketchup and most importantly, bacon. Seriously, if you're going to eat a good burger, you might as well put bacon in it. Get the sweet potato fries - it's worth. Staff is laid back and friendly.

Nick Barber

First time here. I'm told there is usually a long wait but we walked in and got a table right away. Had a root beer that was fantastic and got the cheeseburger with an egg and bacon with a side of fries. It was fantastic. Couldn't finish it all. Burger was absolutely amazing and bacon was very thick and tasty. Definitely will come back next trip to Chicago.

Mitchell Gordon

Extremely good food! Burgers were spot on drinks were great. Extremely long waits however. Go early when they open at 10-11 to make the wait around 15-30 minutes. You do not get a side when ordering so remember to order something if you'd like for an added cost. Rated one of the best burgers in the midwest and if you get to go you can experience it for yourself.

Eric Greene

Place is amazing. Got some good advice from the bar next door to not only get burgers here. Because they have a lot of other amazing food a we ordered a bunch of different food to share. So glad we did. Got some brunch fish with duck heart , wings, burgers and a fried bologna sandwich. Absolutely delicious and great service. Wait was hour and a half

Jimmy Brennan

Well worth the wait! Highly recommend the double cheeseburger (3 patties) with bacon and a fried egg. The bacon is thick cut and packed with flavor. It is the perfect proportion vs. the 3 patties. The egg of course takes it the extra mile. Fries were good and garlic aioli was very fresh. Prepare yourself for a long wait. But you can put your name down and go grab a drink at one of the many bars nearby. Friendly service, cozy atmosphere, and amazing burger!

Harry Lewis-Barclay

Went there at 11am and didn’t queue at all. Burger was good but not up to the hype. Overall the food was very salty. It’s a shame that they’re so hyped because of the burger as the other food looked amazing. Plus if we hadn’t been in the morning we would have definitely gotten a drink as the beer list is impressive. I’d go back to eat other things if the queuing system wasn’t so stupid.

Michelle Hao

I actually tried the NYC location first and loved it, but when I visited Chicago I knew I wanted to try the original. Somehow...I preferred the burger at the New York location more? A bit juicier, better cuts of bacon. Maybe it was the two hour wait that took away from the experience, I hope they adopt a reservation system like New York soon

Mara Constantine

*Amazing* burgers, and the bacon is thicker than I am. The garlic aioli for the fries was bomb too! Super chill atmosphere, loved the ambient lighting. Can't wait to go back!

George & Linda Preeter

Sooooooo delicious - bacon is perfect, meat is seasoned! I’ve eaten burgers and this is one of the best! Just warning that the wait is usually over 2 hours but I hate to say that this place is worth it. Had half of the burger and ate the rest the following day and it tasted even better. Everything is season so well and the sauce for the fries is so delicious, everyone needs to be here at least once!

Will Kim

Hands down the best burger place in Chicago. Please be sure that there will be long waits (really, like at least an hour or two) but it is all worth it. You might find the burgers

Veronica Alonzo

Definitely get the bologna sandwich. You won’t regret it and bring an appetite. Word to the wise of you come in a large group and don’t mind swayed separately, break up into groups of 2-4 people. You will get seated sooner. There was a 60 minute wait for 3 or more people, but there were 2 of us and we got seated immediately.

Chris Krolczyk

A place that lives up to its hype. I got the bacon cheeseburger (thick-cut bacon that looked a lot like sliced spam in terms of thickness - see the photo) and the fries, and to say they lived up to their billing is an understatement. Full list of cocktails and craft brews on tap, and they have so much more than just burgers.

Willard Brooks

2 hour wait, so my friends and I went to a bar across the street till the table was ready. Best burger I've ever had in my life. We also got the bone marrow dish, huge bones, lots of marrow. The drinks were great. A must go if you have time time.

Hazim Jokhadar

Best Burger ever! I loved every single bite of it. It's so good, it's unreviewable. I'm telling everyone I know, and I'm definitely coming back again soon.

Elvys Matos

Just go. Get the burger however you like and you won’t regret it.

astrid marchal

So delicious! Best burger that I have never eat! And chicken wings amaze me, in a good way ; ) Our server was very kind and attentive. Thanks for the hospitality!

Brian J. Geraghty

Christ; just go. Have the burger, if you’re not religious it might make you see god. If you are, might make your go the other way. Ymmv but it’s a top three, maybe to two for me.

Elie Nabhan

Exquisite and delicious burgers with a phenomenal attention to great service. Definitely recommend their fries which are generous in portion to share for 2. Be ready to wait a little while for a seat, but trust that it’s all worth it.

Andrew Kutylo

What is there to say about a restaurant as well established as this one? You get some drinks and a delicious burger and roll out with at least a little buzz from the beer and/or the burger. The service is great. The atmosphere is lively. It's a great experience. I was surprised to hear I could get in within 1.5 hrs.

Mae Brown

I dined at Au Cheval a few days ago with my husband and two others. When I arrived to put my name on the list (yes, you should make plans to wait at least two hours), the snippy and unfriendly host informed me that you can no longer check your place in line due to their new system. That was a lie. Thankfully I received a text confirming we were in the queue and at any time you can text the word "place" to find out how many parties are ahead of you. We arrived, were promptly seated, and all other staff members were lovely and welcoming. We started with the fried chicken and it was great. Well seasoned and crispy. The bone marrow was bland but the beef cheek marmalade was fantastic. We each ordered burgers...what people wait hours for...and what we got were dry, unseasoned patties with American cheese. My husband got the pork belly on his burger and he said on its own it was good, but the burger left a lot to be desired. Perhaps this was an off night for the kitchen because no one at our table enjoyed their burgers. We won't be back, partly because of the rude host, but mostly because there are other places in Chicago that have better (well seasoned) burgers.

Natalie On

One of my all time favourite burgers! There can be a queue here but the system is efficient you leave your number and they will text you when your table is ready. Hardwood dark panelled decor, dim lighting gives the modern premium take on the upscale diner vibe. Great service and good drinks selection.

WilliamBlackwell1 JenningsV

Long wait to get in but food came almost instantly when we ordered. Hands down the best Burger I've had. That thick cut bacon was on point. The beef cheek jam with the bone marrow was a great compliment to the perfectly cooked marrow.

Allen Walker

Voted the best burger in america for a reason. Was told 2.5-3 hour wait but ended up being closer to 1hr 15min. I would have waited 5.

Jimena Alvarez Soto

Double cheeseburger with egg, bacon and pickles. Add the fries. A beast. No wait time, got there at 10:30 in the morning, and line got busy about fifteen minutes after. Good and friendly service. Nice vibe to the restaurant. Recommend to go once at least if visiting Chicago.

Alex Tam

This Au Cheval burger is the best burger I have ever had in my entire life. As someone who has had burgers across many different countries and cities, I can safely say the burger here is unparalleled. The bun is buttery, the patty is juicy and full of flavour and the egg was delightfully runny. The bone marrow is also worth a try especially if you like marrow, but be warned along with the buttery toast it can be a very rich dish. Hash browns are also a great side pairing.

Gerard

Disappointing. Burger was incredibly salty. It would have been good otherwise but was hard to even finish. Fries were dry and seemed stale. Fried chicken was excellent, the best dish we had. Great selection of beers and very good, friendly and attentive staff. In summary, currently does not warrant the hype but if they fix a few things, it could be great.

Dave Graves

Drove 6 hours from MN and waited 3+ hours for table...100% worth it. Single burger actually has 2 beef patties. Be sure to add the egg and bacon. Was told it takes 10 full days to prep the special bacon...amazing!! Fries are great also...they come with a garlic mayo sauce. Burgers are only around $12...crazy good value for Chicago. Cool place with bumping music playing.

Jason Higaki

Great service and amazing food. The burger is one of the best I've ever had. Would make this a regular stop, but the 2+ hour wait makes me think twice

Catalina Prado

The best burger EVER! ❤️ We had almost no wait at 3pm on a Tuesday although it was packed. We recommend the cheese burger with bacon and egg!

Josh Conley

Such a great experience. Don’t sleep in the bologna - seriously. The whole experience is absolutely worth the wait! Pro tip: Get a “true single” and add bologna to that bad boy. Thank me later.

Joseph Kovacevic

Probably one of the best burgers I’ve ever had.

cyrus dadyburjor

Great food, surprisingly quick service. Prices were very reasonable. The only downside to this place is the waiting time. In our case, we arrived at 5 and we were put on a list. We finally got a table at 9:30. Quite a popular place, taking us 4 and a half hours to get in.

Dani Fu

The burger here is hands down one of the best we have ever had. It is so, so incredibly juicy and delicious. Also, the bacon... You must have the bacon. We also had the food gras scrambled eggs, which was great as well. We can in for brunch at 10am on a Saturday and it was already packed so to avoid a wait, get here early. Absolutely a must go in Chicago.

Jason Rehor

This was definitely the best burgers I have ever had. The burger was cooked perfectly, the bacon is very thick and the egg was a great addition. The wait was not long and the food was affordable for how good it is.

Ryan Abcede

Long wait to get in but food came almost instantly when we ordered. Hands down the best Burger I've had. That thick cut bacon was on point. The beef cheek jam with the bone marrow was a great compliment to the perfectly cooked marrow.

Bob Sloma

Amazing burgers! I didn't even order a special burger and what made it stand out from every other burger joint was the freshness of the meat they use. I was really impressed.

Luzviminda Bayani

No doubt, one of the best gourmet burgers around! Add bacon (special sort) and egg to your order, and it becomes doubly heavenly. But it doesn't come cheap - 25usd for a burger with bacon and egg plus coffee. Ambience and service though were topnotch.

Jay Salmon

Burger was great, but the Cobb salad was sneaky good! Delicious root beer with free refills!

Julia Moser

By far the best burger in town. Great selection of beer. And the atmosphere that takes you back in time. Be ready to wait in line to be seated but it’s so much worth it!

John M

Amazing place for a late night gourmet burger. Menu is simple but delicious. The bacon is extremely thick cut and unbelievably tasty. You can also choose to add an egg. The apps were great in their own right and the chicken was crispy and tasted amazing. Highly recommended.

Winnie Vasquez

We went during lunch so there was no wait. We sat at the bar while watching the chefs cook. The service was friendly. The food was absolutely delicious. We got the cheeseburgers and next time, we'll definitely try something different.

Jay Cuddler

Service was great. There's a wait time at all hours of the day it seems. I would definitely recommend the food but the prices were a little crazy for what it was.

Nick Kupinski

This is the place to get a cheeseburger in downtown Chicago. Best I've ever had and it's worth making the trip into downtown and dealing with all sorts of traffic and people to get to this. The fries are crispy and delicious and the sauces they give you for dipping are some of the best. The bar and restaurant itself are super cool, almost steam punk style. Definitely worth the trip.

Joseph Alsop

The food was amazing and the beer was fire. But it wouldn't have been good without chef being the most professional and honest man. Thank you, you made our experience here at Au Cheval fun and enjoyable. Jesus loves you brother and I hope next time I come you're running the whole place cus you already are

Ofir Har-Chen

I mean listen, overall I liked the burger. But when you get to specifics: • a 2 hours wait for a table? For this..? • by ‘this’ I mean an overall good infrastructure of the burger, with a nice bun, pickles, cheese and bacon (if you like it), and an extra egg for fun, but... • the meat.. really? Very dry and thin. Tasted like the burgers I flip when I’m BBQing myself. To summarize, it’s a nice burger to have for lunch, but nothing more sadly. The hype is oh so out of place. Service was VERY GOOD though. Greet staff, very quick, very nice people. Place was kinda loud but that’s what you get in this kind of places. 3/5

Michelle Abbruzzese

The burger was really good but the three hour wait... I don't know if it was worth that. We were lucky to have a local friend walk over and put our name in earlier that day. It's worth doing once just to say you were there.

Dana Do

My husband and I was in town and we got the chance to check this place out since our friend highly recommended this place. We came in on Saturday morning just right after they just opened up. There were a slight waiting already for like 15-30 minutes. - we ordered the popular burger that everyone ordered. The seasoning and flavor of the burger is good but a little salty.

James Miller

Would go again and again! Impressed with service, food and decor! Highly recommend the hash with duck heart gravy and hamburger with egg and bacon!

Jonathan Carter

My first night in Chicago and memorable one at that. Although the wait time for a Thursday night at 7pm lingered around 2-2.5 hours long (with 18 parties ahead of us) we found comfort next door at Lone Wolf. As for the eating experience, expect a dark, candle lit, cavernous aurora with rich, fatty, meat smells emanating from the open grill. I opted for the single cheeseburger with added Foie gras and egg. Absolutely one of the best burgers I have had; patty cooked to medium rare. This was paired with a dragon’s milk stout , a strong 11% beer with dark-chocolate and cherry flavours which complimented the rich burger. I will return when back in the states!

Mike Harrington

Amazing staff as well as amazing food. We will be back. 5 stars across the board. Thank you for everything. My son was very happy.

Amanda Riandono

My favorite place in the whole world. Always had such great experiences dining here. The food is beyond delicious and the staff is always super friendly. I would definitely go to Chicago only for Au Cheval.

Frank Liu

Like a fancy diner. Drinks are great. Burger is solid as well. It's def worth a try just because of the bacon but I wouldn't say best burger by any means

Kathryn Pino

Finally had a chance to try Au Cheval on a Tuesday afternoon after a 30-minute wait. I had the single cheeseburger and it was extraordinary!! Definitely one of the best burgers I have ever had.

Mary Jude

I went to this place last minute on a Saturday night without a reservation. I knew better but that's what happens in the heat of the moment. Wait time.....2 1/2-3hrs. There are plenty of other spots nearby to hang while you wait so that's what happened. Good burger but didn't live up to the reviews at all. I loooove fries and these were served fresh yet still not very enjoyable. I've heard best burger place in Chicago but there's only one type of burger consisting of bacon, egg, cheese, and your typical diner flat patty. You can just add or delete these ingredients to modify your burger. There was nothing special in the makeup of this burger at all but to each its own. I think the overrated reviews are mainly due to its popular location. I have no incentive to return.

KE Schtroumpfs

Amazing burger! Had the single--comes with two patties. Hubby had gluten free version and liked the hash brown "bun". Fries were good but nothing to write home about. Draft root beer was nice and cold. Very decent prices. Would definitely go back.

Trevor Ching

Solid burgers with a very meaty feel. Plain and simple not much else to the burgers. The meat shines best in it though could feel overwhelmingly salty with the bacon and fries at the same time
