Gluten-free is rarely understood in most restaurants, but this place thankfully does. GF burger buns, fries made in separate fryer. However the food's taste was underwhelming: Fish burger was too salty Fries were soft, not crispy at all Onion rings were tasty but quite oily The salad was mediocre. Food = 2 Gluten-free understanding = 5 Service = 5 Would I be back? = 3 Given our order, they thoughtfully suggested side-size fries instead of the normal (giant) servings.

This place is incredible. So happy we found it. The Big Island doesn't really have so many amazing places but this is definitely one of them. Its burgers and fries but so good or ono. It doesn't sound so exciting but give it a try they do make the best burgers on the island so forget about Annie's and their overpriced burgers. It gets crowded and not a whole lot of seating but plenty seats outside. Take it with you to the sea wall and enjoy it while looking out on the water

Today we ate at Island Ono Loa Grill and we ordered two burgers: the applewood smoked bacon cheeseburger and the poblano pepper jack cheeseburger. We also had the side of fries and onion rings. The poblano pepper one was very tasty! I recommend it! The bacon cheeseburger was dry and definitely left something to be desired. Also, the fries and onion rings were overdone.

A really tasty and fun place to get quick burgers and Hawaiian dishes. It's got a kind of hole in the wall fast food kind of feeling, and the workers were all very friendly. We ordered burgers, but they also had kalua pork plates, Loco Moco, and other tasty looking food. The burgers were really good. The fries were, in my opinion, a little overdone, but my dad liked them that way, so I guess that's a matter of preference. There's outdoor seating if you prefer that. They serve Pepsi products. Over all, this is a fun place to eat and I highly recommend it.

Awesome burger! I went with the PB & B(acon) because those two things belong together in my belly. The staff was very nice and we hit the restaurant just before a massive lunch hour rush, so we had a bit of time to fully assess the menu. There are definitely a couple other burgers that I'd like to try if our travels bring us back here before we depart the island. The burger was chargrilled and paired very well with the equally crispy bacon. The peanutbutter was not smothered, but you definitely tasted in on the burger. The only things I could say to improve the burger would be size (could be a bit bigger) and pickles (the only other place I know of that specializes is PB&B adds pickles and it is superb. This place tagged itself as yelp's 8th best burger in the US. I dont know about that, but it is pretty good. I'd recommend coming and trying and I might definitely make another trip to try the volcano burger. I'd read less than favorable reviews on the fries here. I asked for well done fries and they turned out great. My son's fries were a but oversalted, so that was a thing, but not a huge deal.

Very small restaurant but the food and service was very good. They tout themselves as having the 8th best hamburger in the entire U.S. I'm not sure how they got that rating but I did enjoy the hamburger. I ordered the veggie salad and it had lettuce, tomato, cucumber and carrots which were very fresh. They have a bathroom for customers but did not have air conditioning. The floor was a little slippery like there was oil on the floor.

Island Ono Loa Grill serves the best burger in Hawaii and rivals any burger anywhere on the planet. CHEE HOO!!!!!

My wife and I are from San Antonio, TX and eat burgers a lot. Island Ono Loa Grill does not have a good burger, they have a great burger. And to top it all off, when you order a burger fries or onion rings are included. We must have gone to 15 different places to eat this week, and absolutely, no one had the value of this deal! we had two burgers, onion rings and fries and could not decide which we liked better, fries or rings, both outstanding. Wish we would have found this place earlier. We are leaving in three days, but will for sure eat here again at least two more times. great taste, great value and very friendly service. can't beat it!!

Ate here ~ two years ago and was excited to try again on our return visit to the Big Island as the food was delicious last time, but was sadly disappointed. Hot dogs and burger was undercooked. The AC seemed to be broken and the heat in the restaurant appeared to have the kitchen staff and the cashier (who may have been new to the position) on edge with one another, which was evident to the customers.

Great food! Amazing flavors and the onion rings were spectacular. They had a mix up which caused a 30 minute wait for us. They didn't let us know that anything was wrong nor try to make up for the delay in any way. When we finally asked about the wait, they offered a small apology. Other than that, it was good. We happened upon this place because the surrounding restaurants had a long wait and we are SO glad we did! The poblano burger was juicy and incredibly flavorful. It is also no charge to sub a side salad for fries. My husband had the macnut pesto goat cheese burger and really enjoyed the taste of the goat cheese.

If you love goat cheese, go to this place!! Some of the best goat cheese I have ever had, and it is made here on the island. We had the Mac Pesto Burger, the Kahlua Pork and the Goat Cheese salad and they were all fantastic. We also came at a slower time, and the owner came and talked to us about all sorts of stuff. Great place, highly recommend!

Best onion rings I've ever had. Super crisp and fresh. The burger was big and juicy. Very delicious meal and great service. I will be coming back to try the hot dogs!

My son and I went here for supper while we were visiting the island on vacation. They had very good reviews and did not disappoint. I found the burgers to be excellent. I added a fried egg to mine and they cooked it perfectly, runny. That is actually hard to find. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the island. Such a great burger! Juicy, fresh, full of flavor! Fresh and soft buns that look like they were toasted on the grill. The fries were delicious as well. After we ate our first plates my fiancé went back for a hot dog and more fries. Highly recommend stopping here. I love that they offer multiple local ingredients from the burger themselves to the coleslaw with local pineapple. Nice inside and outside seating area. They have some fans going on the inside and it feels cooler than outside. One customer only restroom. Pepsi products available and free ice water. A few wall outlets near certain tables which were nice for charging our phones.

This is my go-to place for a tasty, affordable burger lunch. You can get a burger, fries and a drink for only about $10. The price is nice, but the quality of the burgers--juicy, quality meat--are exceptional and the buns are made by a local (South Kona) bakery. The service is fast; I've seldom had to wait more than 10 minutes for my food to be on the table. It's a bit difficult to find, but on the plus side, there is ample free parking.

This is a small eatery tucked into a strip mall near the beach. It can be difficult to find because there is no street visibility. Best access is from Kuakini Highway. Park in the lot next to the tennis courts and walk toward west. There is no parking access from Ali'i Drive but if you are walking the you can get in from that side. The location has around a dozen tables with the largest seating 6 and most seating 4 so large groups aren't easily accommodated. The menu is hot dogs, burgers, and sandwhiches but with many unique options (e.g peanut butter and bacon hamburger). The burger patties are delicious with a house seasoning salt that gives the patties a salty kick without tasting over salted. I recommend the moco loco which is burger patties covered with fried eggs served over rice and covered with gravy. Sounds strange but is so very delicious. There is a single unisex restroom. For disabled visitors, be warned that the paving in the strip center is uneven with many small steps and large cracks. They are all marked in red but may present some difficulties. The restaurant itself is disabled friendly with a large restroom that can accommodate a wheelchair.

Island Ono Loa Grill has been great every time we go (which is often). Great for a quick bite on the go or casual dine in.

Subjective: I recently had the Volcano Burger. It was really really good. So, far, it has been the best burger on the island, and I've had a lot. I have also tried their Macadamia Burger and Peanut Butter Burger. The Macadamia was decent, but the Peanut Butter was just alright. I enjoyed the mainland beef the most. Objective: Pretty typical pricing for the island. Some places don't even give you a side; they do. Staff was friendly and everything clean. I wish the burgers were bigger.

The hype is true. The burgers are fantastic. Don't bother springing for the grass fed local beef unless you are a local-vore, though. The fries will not impress a true fry purist because they are spiced but they are still very good, nonetheless. The salads are crisp. These folks pay close attention to the details. If you come away dissatisfied from this spot you probably should eat at McDonalds.

Aloha all burger lovers, look no further for the BEST burger west side of big island has to offer. Island Ono Loa grill has a friendly staff who always hustle to ensure absolute accuracy and deliciousness! My favorite is the Paniolo Burger add bacon, I frequent the location once a week and they know my order when I call in and give my name. THAT is service! I worked at In N Out Burger for 6 years so I know "quality you can taste" this place has it! I have never tried anything other than burgers from the menu but I hear the hot dogs are phenomenal as well! I was hesitant about doing a review because I don't want millions of people crowding up my favorite spot, but the world needs to know about these burgers!

Good food in general. I had a small piece of fish (nicely grilled) with some rice and a side green salad. The salad and the rice were nothing special, no special taste or spices; the fish was nice. All this for $15.99. Food versus price is not a very good value I would say. For this reason I am rating this experience 3 stars.

My grilled cheese was not good. The cheese was only melted on the edges. The inside revealed two slices of cheese that were cold. The inside part of the top bread looked like an end piece with seeds or possibly a hamburger bun. I would mind that if it weren't flipped over as if they were hiding something. It didn't stick to the cold cheese. The pineapple coleslaw was tasty but needed more pineapple. When they asked how the food was, I was honest. They offered me some complimentary fries, so at least they tried. I don't understand all the great reviews. Maybe I should have tried the burger.

A week later and I'm still dreaming of the super yummy burger that I enjoyed at Island Ona Loa Grill. Service was lovely, prices fair (I love that they offered locally raised beef patties for a $1 upgrade price), food delicious... it's definitely worth finding off the beaten path. And parking on the inland side of the shopping center was easy even on a busy Sat night.

The spicy kalua pork sandwich was delish! The bun was sweet and soft. The loco moko was good as well, but the sandwich was the winner. You could tell the burgers are great here from the meat taste in the loco moko. Will definitely be back to try the burgers. Also the onion rings were great, especially with that spicy sauce. Tasted like a thinner style ranch with some kick maybe tapatio hot sauce was added into it. Also not too speedy, maybe $10-$15 per person!

Sorry definitely a grease pit almost slipped on the floor walking in onion rings cold and greasy greasy greasy sorry to say we will not be eating here again.

I had the Volcano burger and it was so good n flaimed broiled with seasoned fries. My wife had the hamburger steak plate and that was the bomb! I work with a big food industry company on this Island and gonna definitely give a good word to go to.

I always try the burgers in new places so had to try this place out. I upgraded to the grass-fed beef for my Applewood- smoked cheeseburger. A really delicious patty but the fries were the surprise bonus! Service was courteous and fast too. Definitely check it out. Don’t shy away because it looks dark from outside. AC works a treat.

Great moderately priced meals just off the Nona strip. Burgers, fish plate, etc. I had ahi tuna plate. Less than most burgers and really really good.

Great service and friendly atmosphere, with knowledgeable caring staff . Delicious burgers with great (toasted) GF bums. Dedicated GF frier and GF in-house dressings. We've gone back almost every day in Kona.

Excellent Ono sandwich on a homemade bun. Not much atmosphere but nice and friendly. Worth the walk to find it. Fries were handcut and very tasty. My husband's pulled pork sandwich was very good also.
