This Restaurant belongs to the category of Hawaiian restaurant.
We originally stopped at Mama's fish house but we're immediately turned off by the unwelcome vibes by the valet attendant and hostess. Perhaps our salty beach like attire provoked the un-welcome or possibly it was our muddy Jeep following our day trip to Hana. Regardless, we found an absolute gem, Hali'imaile General Store. After winding through the beautiful lush countryside we landed at the most magical restaurant fully equipped with an incredible staff and cuisine.
So good! Just go, all the food is fantastic. Service wonderful. We will never forget the Maui Mule, the Chinese chicken salad, the pineapple Upside down cake and the Blackened Ahi.
Come once a week and spend close to $1000 a month here for a few reasons: 1st- pickled beet salad 2nd- convenience and location to my home 3rd- the bar, again close to home Bev- why pull the most unique special salad on island?! New menus are fun, but you're killing the differentiating factor. Sad to say goodbye
Been coming since 2005 - never disappoints. Great quality. Unpretentious. Reasonable price (compared to the rest of gourmet Maui)
Good service, great cocktail but we were sadly disappointed with the fish tacos. We have had them many times in the past but the mahi-mahi was dry and seemed overcooked, lacking flavor. Hopefully just an off day.
The grand ol’ dame of Hawaiian regional cuisine. Been dining here over many years and generally do make it to the General Store each visit. Tasty food and warm service. Nice wine list! If you plan ahead, check for special events like Turley wine dinners! We went to one in 2013 and it was memorable.
My husband had the Ahi Poke Bowl. I had the fish and chips. We split the phenomenal upside down pineapple cake with their local Ice cream. The food was spectacular. The service excellent. If you're on Maui, this place is a must go.
Amazing food and drinks! Ask Wendy for a lillikoi daiquiri!!
We love this place!!
Our Waiter Chris was very pleasant and did an outstanding job. We'll be back again. Always a great dinner at the General Store
Great food, service, and remarkable building
We’ve always had great service
Most dynamic flavor profiles!
It's hard to review this place cause in a way I dont want it to always be crowded. But yes, this is one of the best restaurants on Maui. Hands down. The menu is excellent and this is where I take everyone who comes and visits me, and first dates. It hits the mark on so many levels. I look forward to the next time I go.
Excellent appetizers. Good menu. A bit pricey, casual but very nice atmosphere. Great bar.
Wonderful food great service
I was meeting my Lady's family for the first time, we took forever to order appetizers, then when they came we talked forever. This restaurant waited for us, then delivered. Perfect timing, delicious! Thanks so much!
A must dining experience in Maui! Hands down best dinner anywhere with excellent service. The chefs have wonderful menu with incredible sauces!
This restaurant group and owners are petty conniving jerks who do everything they can to screw their employees over every chance they get. When someone gets a better opportunity and decides to move on, they think it’s ok to mess around and withhold paychecks from them. They fire employees for having human emotions and promote nepotism in the workplace. Most importantly they don’t even use fresh food in their restaurants. Their fish comes frozen from MASSACHUSETTS, DYED for color. Their “secret recipe” crab dip is made using imitation and artificial ingredients. This isn’t a staple restaurant of maui anymore, it’s just another cash cow for the GANNON’S.
Good is excellent.
Best restaurant! Has great lunch menu with interesting dishes including curries and interesting salads.Location up country adds to charm.
I took notice of people their very warned ! Take cover brings their buisiness here inn hawaii
Not worth the drive!!! Roy's sooo much better. At 5:30 all the minorities and people with kids were seated at th back. It was dirty and smelled. The food was a joke at the price point. Crab pizza was made with pre made bread from Costco with what looked like some sort of crab vomit. The ribs were from Costco re- heated and drenched with BBQ sauce to masquerade the poor quality. Very disappointed and won't be coming back.
Needed a great place to take my wife for 45-year anniversary - and we were not disappointed! Ambiance is light and airy. We arrived at 5:30 pm to beat the crowd and sat by the front windows. By 6:30 the place was pretty full - including the second dining room in the back. Service was excellent and food was great! I would highly recommend the General Store - especially for special occasions! Meal was a bit pricey, but fit for our occasion!
Nice place, family friendly, good food, prices a bit high for the location.
This was a fantastic meal. The atmosphere was nice, the service was solid, and the food was fantastic. The stand out was the main: the Blackened Tofu was an amazingly well-balanced and creative vegitarian dish. In fact, they had a whole veg-friendly menu! I'd absolutely recommend it.
The crab pizza here was outstanding! It is an appetizer, but I wish it was an entree! All the food was delicious, that happened to be my favorite dish our week on Maui!
I've never tried the restaurant yet but I'm sure the food n drinks are delicious and refreshing. However I've tried the desserts and they're so decadent delicious and I'm in heaven
A very lively restaurant. Don’t order the famous crab pizza...I don’t think there’s any real crab meat in it... It tasted like the imitation crab mixture you get in California rolls baked on top of a soft flatbread
We enjoyed our Administrative Professionals luncheon there very much. The special of the day was very good and the Fish Curry is the best! All four of us ordered a dessert! Don't leave without trying the Pineapple Upside down cake or Love in a Jar! Service was great as always.
Wonderful meal. Awesome service. Worth a visit.
Food was good. Service mediocre. Pricey and overrated. Very noisy atmosphere.
Nice plantation vibe with delicious food and a great wine list. Made me so happy to see one of my favorite wines was by the glass ( Round Pond Cab) as of this posting.
The crab pizza is amazing
Good food and service. A little overpriced but the ambiance made it worth it. The sever was very personable and didnt rush us to decide on our meal or leave once we were done. Overall a good experience but be prepared to spend some money. Best mai tai that ive had in a long while (made with lilikoi juice).
great food. great wine list. great staff that shares honest opinions. great setting. top gin distiller is across the street. a fair value in an expensive hawaii.
Nice menu. Great service.
Great food, well trained & friendly staff. Skilled bartender......The Ahi Noodle Bowl was superb as was the Mahimahi tacos. Excellent poured cocktails. You have to get their pineapple upside down cake award winning dessert.
Fantastic place for lunch. Very enjoyable. Crab cake and shrimp salad was delicious. Check out the fantastic promotion they have going on donations to the Boys & Girls Club. Great opportunity to have a good lunch and give to a great cause.
Came in for lunch and the food was not good. The ahi that I got was way overcooked. It was an expensive lunch to not even finish the food. Service was pretty good. They add a kitchen service charge on the bill at the end which I found strange.
Weñdy was great. Knew local best of and must try ... And, her Mai tai freshly made is hands down the best on the island. The passion fruit margarita was also amazing.
You must visit this restaurant, and ask for Sandy Jean!! She made our entire dinner and bar experience WONDERFUL! She is the epitome of the Aloha spirit. She is fabulous in more ways than I can describe. The food was wonderful too- but amazing experiences with good people are priceless. Sandy Jean made it priceless.
Only had one dish....there it was and it was decent. So i cant say for sure about the rest of the menu. Service was fine.
In middle of nowhere. But one of our top 2 restaurants on Maui. Also lunch Monday through Friday. Bev Gannon's favorite. Saw her last visit.
Excellent food and service!
Wow.... Truly amazing! I love the Hawaiian cuisine enfluenced entrees. Delicious and awesome presentation. The service is genuinely friendly and fun. Definitely going back here!!!
This is a good restaurant, limited menu, great service. Reservations recommended.
Out of all the restaurants in Maui we visited on our honeymoon, this one was our favorite by far!
Wonderful food and service
Never disappointing nonpareil service and food quality! Gabriel is a great bartender!!
This is really not a General Store but rather a great restaurant. The food here is local, delicious, with good staff. Our lunch was a precursor to a tour of the distillery across the street. I still cannot get over the chickens....not the menu ones, the ones running around outside.
Excellent food and excellent service a fun place to eat and a little pricey
The service was island pace, so do not expect to get out of there fast. The food was amazing! Kalua Pork spring rolls were to die for. The ribs were sauced or served wet, beautiful balance of spicy and sweet. Pork shank.... impeccable! Pricey but well worth it!
OMG do not pass this place over. We were looking for something close to the airport 1 to kill sometime 2 somewhere away from the tourists. This was our best meal during our entire stay and I'm not talking burger joint's. Service atmosphere food. As my buddy would say the whole schmear was amazing. Do not pass this place over. Delicious eclectic I just can't say enough nice stuff about these guys
Stopped in for a sliced lamb french dip sandwich, w/caramelized onions. Very tasty. Washed it down with the upcountry Maui mule. Place was full, but service was fast. Wendy the drinkmaster was warm & friendly.. Rain was gushing, so I passed on the glass blower & their own distillery across the road.
We came in during a rainy tropical storm day. The crab cake pizza was so good that it almost qualifies as desert. The coconut seafood curry was filling and delightful. The wait staff was attentive without bothering us too often. Overall a great experience on a dreary day.
I had the macadamia nut encrusted Mahi Mahi and my wife had the watermelon salad. The Mahi Mahi was very good. I had greens in place of the wasabi mashed potatoes. The greens were infused with wasabi and were also very good. Our waitress was super friendly.
Excellent food. Price is high but that was expected. Wait staff was very accommodating. First class all the way!
Love this restaurant! We come here year after year. Great food. Great service!!
One of the pricey restaurants on Maui. Great food, service, and atmosphere. If your looking to try it out, go during lunch time. Prices are a little cheaper on entree’s during lunch.
Great food and atmosphere. Everyone in my family greatly enjoyed the food. The whole menu looks delicious and there's definitely a great dish for anyone there. There's a lot of fresh, local ingredients in the food as well which definitely comes across too!
Great restaurant located in upcountry Maui, away from tourist traps. Chill vibes and fantastic food, everyone had something different on the menu and loved it. Highly recommend the curry, fish tacos, and pineapple upside down cake.
I must admit. After having been in and out of there over the past decade plus, my last fee visits have really been terrific. Things really seem on point now. Love the pork shank with smoked gouda polenta.
Amazing setting and great Menu
Booked this lunch with the pineapple tour across the street. The pineapple tour has a special menu (since the price is included with the tour) and you have 4 options to choose from for lunch! We ordered the BBQ pork sandwich and the crab pizza- both very good! Has a nice Hawaiian market theme inside.
Amazing but pricey food, worth trying! Beautiful and classy place!
Food was outstanding, great service, and the iced tea was perfect.
Great experience, outstanding food with super reasonable wine prices. We sampled much of the specials but the regular menu is wonderful. If you have a late flight out of the airport this is the perfect place to have dinner before arriving at the airport.
It used to be so good! I'm heartbroken. Ok food for $40 per plate. Really?? The menu has barely changed in years and there's more misses than hits. I had the Macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi and it was overcooked and the coating was burned. I would have sent it back if I wasn't in a group. My friend has the duck and he said it was just okay. Another friend had the seafood Curry and he said it was good but not great. I warned them against the ahi Noodle bowl which I had back when the restaurant was good and it was nothing to write home about, and I also warned them off the crab pizza and kalua pork gyoza. I don't know what's happened to this restaurant but it isn't good.
Nice place, interesting menu, excellent servers who provide knowledgeable info about the menu.
We spent the afternoon in Paia and had an early evening reservation. The service was impeccable as was our dinner, from the appetizer to the main course to dessert. And the building is historical and inviting. A must if you are in the area.
Great food and service. Not to be missed, but make a reservation if you hope to get in for dinner.
Five stars in not enough. Hali’imaile is on the way the to Makawao, in the middle of pineapple country. Nice, quiet out of the way location. The food here is the best, the service was entertaining.
The food here is excellent. The staff is very friendly. One of the best places I have ate in Maui
It is an interesting place with all the wall decor and other knickknacks on the display shelves. I like the outdoor feel without being outdoors. It is loud because of how the place is built, but I think there's a back room where it's more private and quiet. Chris our server was really personable and most of the wait staff had a smile on their face. They were very attentive. A bit pricey, but worth it. Food was tasty and the desserts were amazing! We'll definitely come back!
Scrumptious food and friendly staff
Excellent food and excellent service
Amazing farm-to-table cuisine -- worth a special journey!
Our second time to the Hali'imaile General Store, and just as good if not better than the first. Great atmosphere, impeccable service, Onolicious (very tasty)food, without the crowds or wait of Mama's. Prices are a little over the top for fine dinning, otherwise they would've got 5 stars. A great place to celebrate special life events!
Did you know you can eat here? You can and it's really good.
We had a wonderful lunch here. We didn’t have a reservation but had no issues getting a table. The service was great. I had the Fish Coconut Curry and loved it. Seriously amazing! My 12 year old ordered the Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich from the regular menu and my husband had the Fish and Chips. Everyone loved what they ordered. We would definitely go back.
A place you would like to visit and experience! The atmosphere is such a great vibe. The food is unique and tasty!
The lamb is terrific
Bev Gannon is my favorite. Amazing vegetarian menu. The vegetarian coconut curry made up for the many times at restaurants that the vegetarian option has been iceberg lettuce. For 10 minutes the only words I could utter were "this is so good!" Thank you Bev! You're my hero.
OMG!! This place is Awesome!!! The Braised Beef was soooo TENDER and DELICIOUS!! Definitely will come back to eat when on vacation!!
Been coming here for about 10 years and it is amazing every time. The atmosphere is stunning and airy. Easter brunch this year was nothing short of fabulous. Got to meet the owner a couple of times and have a few of her cookbooks.
Beautiful location. Food was interesting but overpriced. Tai Mai ok. Nice whiskey selection.
This place was amazing. The food was awesome and everything was good. There's also alot of good stuff nearby. Like the pineapple farm. The lemonade was the best lemonade I had had on Maui. The kids menu also has some good things. This place also has alot of seating. The decorations on the wall are good too. It also has good deserts like pineapple upside down cake. But there are other deserts you can get too. The dinner is supposed to be more fancy and more expensive than the lunch. Witch is why I went for lunch.
The food here is amazing. Well balanced and complex flavors all around. I had a terrific pork chop with a Portuguese sausage stuffing. My partner enjoyed a blackened tofu dish with wasabi greens, mashed potatoes, and sweet chili sauce. Did I mention they have an entire vegetarian menu? They do, and it's awesome. Drinks were fantastic as well. Some of the best food I've had anywhere.
Great place in Makawao to have lunch or dinner. Delicious food and tasty beverages. Located about 7 miles from Paia, Maui.
it does`t shear the menu on the website i have been searching for hours and i did`t find the menu.
You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Went with a large group and tried everything. It's some of the best food in the area.
Probably the best restaurant on Maui. Very creative cuisine. Incredible bar and bar staff.
Awesome desserts
Yummy. The crab pizza is a must try
I'll admit, my expectations were pretty high. This was going to be our one "fancy dinner" in Maui and it was such a bust. Should have spent a little more and gone to Mama's I guess. Food was mediocre at best. Service was annoying (Seriously, why did the waitress sing loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear? Please stop.) and slow. Honestly, just nothing special about the place at all. Save your money and try one of the many other places on the island.
Lovely dinner. Great food and delightful servers. Desserts to die for. Can't give 5 stars because of the noise. Hard to carry on a conversation.
I went in for an afternoon cool off drink. It was perfectly refreshing. Many do not know of their off main peak hours for a nice stop over refreshment on those hot days. Nearby park and Hailimaile offer a shaded park like setting for a walk. Also secret back door ramp access for handycap or stroller which was a relief.
Spectacular dishes and drinks. A must do when on island.
This is the best restaurant on Maui. Period. Gannon made a Great one. Make reservations.
Food was amazing and after eating here for 25 years, it is still fabulous food!
Amazing menu and brilliant presentation Very Professional staff not to be missed. A real Gem!
This place is a must go if your staying anywhere on Maui. Every dish is on point but my go to is the seafood coconut curry dish.
Overall, I was unimpressed with the food and the service. The manager kept stepping in so perhaps it was training night or something. I think this is definitely one of those places that comes off bigger in the brochures than in real life and I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. That said, if you're driving by, give it a shot. Maybe they got better.
Great Food. Great Service. Reasonably Priced
Amazing food and service, this place was a great find.
Kalua Pork Enchilada Pie was exceptionally outstanding in the quality of the meat and the combination of ingredients. Price was reasonable by Maui prices. Full of flavor but not hot: just deliciously enjoyable and a meal by itself. Everything we have ordered over the 10 years of visits has been exceptional and much better than offerings and prices in Lahina and Kannapali. Well worth the drive up to beautiful upcountry: easy to locate.
Our AirBnB host recommended this place, and we were not disappointed. We started with a Mai Tai (Tai Mai on their menu) and a Kaffir Lime & Coconut Daiquiri - so delicious! We shared the Crab Pizza, the Watermelon Salad and the Steamed Island Fresh Catch. There was plenty of food for the two of us, and each dish seemed to have a special taste surprise. Our waiter, Dave, was friendly and attentive, and made us feel like we were his favorite diners ever. We loved it so much, we went back the night before we left and had an equally fabulous experience the second time. We even recommended that our friends who were going to Maui the week after us eat here!
Really unique and delish take on all dishes. Service with a smile as soon as you open door.
Best restaurant in Hawaii. I've been eating there since it opened. Outstanding!
Awesome.....Beet salad wonderful. Our waitress Veronica was superb.
Great service and delicious food!
Every time I come to Maui, I have to come here for dinner. Have not been dissatisfied yet. The best dinner everytime.
Pricy but excellent food.
We come to Maui every August and eat here every time. The food is always EXCELLENT, service awesome, and overall, always a great experience.
Don’t expect much when going here. Even better, just don’t. First of all it’s loud like you’re in a canteen. No ambiance whatsoever. The price value ratio is totally off. For $45 an entree, the food was just okay. For $14 a cocktail there was way too much sugar. I get the whole authenticity vibe but it’s just too expensive for what it is.
The best food and service on the island.
Good fresh food. Was very busy last time and took a bit longer and had to wait even with reservations. We arrived early too. Have heard mixed reviews (we live here) but we had excellent dinners. Appetizer quesadilla out of this world! Mai tais special and well known. Recommend fish.
Great afternoon lunch spot...food, service, and location upcountry.
It's a beautiful restaurant with a stunning setting above Paia. The food, I must say, was a bit disappointing. I had the Poke bowl, which should have been very good given the quality of the ingredients. However, the rice was cold and a bit dried out. Is this the way Poke is supposed to be served? I'll give it another try but ask more questions next time.
This place makes me wish 4.5 were an option for rating. It was really good - good cocktails, the sashimi napolean is a must, and mostly good service (our server was a little unfriendly, but her colleagues made up for it) - it just didn't quite rate 5 stars for us. Would still definitely recommend as a very good experience and worth a visit for a lovely and casual dining experience.
Very nice restaurant. Worth the drive.
Delicious! Fun! Great atmosphere. Pray there are no shrieking kids!
A must for us on every trip. Such cozy and friendly place. Great food and service.
Awesome food, awesome drinks, awesome waitstaff! Highly recommended!
Truly great. We split the Sashimi Napoleon appetizer and also split the coconut seafood curry. At my wife's insistence we had the pineapple upside down cake. Every dish was outstanding, and was better than I imagined possible.
The food was, with very few exceptions, excellent. They have an interesting wine list and a very good bar. The place is very loud though and the tables are a bit crowded. I would have liked a deck or windows on the sunset side. I think that it's probably the ideal Sunday brunch place.
Awesome food, great service, the half chicken is so good, the scallops are delicious, the macadamiam crusted mahi mahi Soo good. They get us in Everytime without a reservation
I had the seafood curry and it was almost perfect. Almost in that the shrimp was slightly over cooked... but the scallops and fish, which are much more difficult to get right, were perfect! The steak was very good, and the lamb was superb as well. Highly recommended.
Location and atmosphere is very unique and comfortable. Love the old building architecture. Food was really good. Service was good but seemed rushed to get us out of there. But was a good experience. Pineapple upside down cake a'la mode was fantastic.
A little off the beaten path but well worth the drive. Good food, pleasant servers and affordable prices.
Great place for lunch. Food is consistenly Good. We always stop there after golfing at Pukulani Golf Course.
Insanely delicious food and drinks with right amount of alcohol!!!
Excellent food and atmosphere. A must
Very good menu selection and food. Great atmosphere and vibe. A bit pricy but worth it.
Awesome eats upcountry! Maui history too
Excellent food, service and atmosphere!
Extraordinary! Excellent food and service!
So fun. took such good care of us. Food.... swoon.
Food and service were excellent
Great food. Neat little hidden treasure for lunch.
Ridiculously good food. We ordered the crab pizza, Caesar salad, prime rib, and seafood curry and loved every bite. The service was good and food came reasonably despite the crowd. The Manhattan was the best drink I have had on the island. Everything you have heard about the food here is true (unfortunately including the prices) and is worth the visit while on the island.
Pleasant atmosphere and friendly service
Good food but really slow service
Food is great. Try the crab pizza. The pau vodka is made from maui gold pineapples. It was all delicious!
This is a general store converted into a restaurant a few decades ago. It has old world charm with a good Pacific menu. The popcorn shrimp were moist, obviously made from fresh shrimp and not the usual pencil erasers. They were excellent. The poke was generously portioned and delicious. They're is lots of parking beside the property and across the street. The drive from waillea is easy.
Expectations were high, unfortunately not met. The place is very loud, the service is nothing special and the menu is way overpriced. Didn’t really feel the authentic hawaiian vibe...can’t figure out how so many people can give 5 stars to this restaurant. You can find better places to have dinner in Maui.
