This Restaurant is classified in the category of Bar & grill.
This is a staple for Newark. It’s a good value if you hit the daily specials. Happy hour is for the locals, night (after 9pm) is for the college kids. Some items on the menu are quality and others are standard bar food (chicken tenders, nachos). I would suggest they promote the items that are fresh, not frozen.
Best food and people in Newark after midnight
Drinks, music, and fries are my fave things about this place
Service was a little slow but food was excellent
Always a good time
Food was good and beer selection was great.
Solid selection, decent prices, adequate service.
One of the greatest places to go to. I first one here 15 years ago and it is still an incredible place, highly recommended for all ages.
Great food fun for family
Great place for Sunday Funday Brunch!
Great local tavern with great burgers and tap beers
Great staff very friendly family owned restaurant. Great location. The owner's are really involved with their community and charity events.
This place felt like home. It's exactly what the taverns out west feel like. I sat at the bar and ate by myself with the bartender giving me just enough attention to know she was checking up on me, but not making me self-conscious. The food was pretty good but the beer menu was pretty small. Seems like a good place to bring visitors or people from out-of-town though.
Has not changed since I started coming here in the 80's. Still a good bargain for excrement food.
We went in at noon and sat at our table until 12:12. I asked for the manager & the waiter that apparently was going to serve us said “Oh I was about to come over.” I said yeah but nobody acknowledged us with a “hey I’ll be right with you” or anything. He claimed they were really busy..... There were barely any customers there. At least 4 different servers walked by us and nobody acknowledged us. The hostess even said at least once, maybe twice that we had been sitting there a while and I guess that fell on deaf ears. It doesn’t matter if you’re slammed...Which they weren’t. You still come by and say something. The manager was nice and offered to pay for our meal if we stuck around but I don’t want to give my business to an establishment with such poor service. I appreciate the manager being so kind and trying to save us as customers, but we won’t be back.
Great food and good drink selection!
A surprisingly good crab cake
Everything is so different yet nothing has changed. I practically lived at the Deer Park in my 20's. Great place for college sudents and townies like myself. The food is good standard bar fare plus some specialties. Buy a mug and never have to pay a cover charge. Thats apparently one thing that has changed. I dont remember ever paying a cover charge when I haunted the place but times have changed. This is a historical site Mason and Dixon stayed here Edgar Alan Poe supposedly stayed here also. The first night my dad stayed in Newark he stayed here too. They have redecorated/remodeled a little and opened up the second floor in the time since I was a regular as well. Was a great chance to reminisce and the food was good as well. Prices are average for this type of establishment. Definitely a Newark staple worth visiting.
This local pub gets five stars because it is exactly what one would expect from a well run restaurant.
It's the Deerpark. College bar. Never changes. That's not a knock against them either
Great local bar. Good drinks. Tuesday half price burgers a great deal.
Good food and nice staff...but service was a little slow. Overall though, a good place to visit.
Good drink selection, good guys at the bar, and a really neat atmosphere most of the night to be in such a historic place. The crowd got decidedly younger and not my scene the later it got, but that seems to be because the university had just started up for the semester. Basically, go early if you aren't in to the college crowd when school is in session, or go late if you are in to it.
First time to Newark and had a horrible experience here. Bouncer named Brandon kicked me and my buddies out claiming we were being inappropriate when we were just trying to have a few drinks and leave. The bouncer was clearly misinformed and was very inappropriate when he approached us. I don't find it fair that I was kicked out for no reason after spending hundreds of dollars here over the years. Definitely won't be coming back to deer park. Brandon needs to go. All of this because my cousin hugged me and Brandon said it was inappropriate while all these teenagers were all over each other on the dance floor. Would rate a 0/5 If I could. Also to mention, limited parking, high prices, and a staff that is very unprofessional wouldn't recommend. Plenty of other bars in the area.
Half price burgers on Tuesday!
Great bar food and drinks!
Server Rachel was fabulous. Bartenders top notch and food ..so good
Great place for drinks, see if you can get on the upstairs deck when the weather is nice
Food and atmosphere excellent.
Good place to hang out. Friendly ataff
Best bar in Newark!
Friendly wait staff, great burgers, awesome corn and crab chowder..Very creative menu, and my family and I have enjoyed everything we've tried! (Which is pretty much the entire menu over the past 6-7 years!) They have some really good bands that play there..( check the schedule..it changes during summer and winter!)
Only place with good popcorn
Always great popcorn & drinks. But don't go here if you're hungry...they have a sufficient menu but the food quality is inconsistent. Nice people. Outdoor patio in summer.
Great place to sit and eat some "okay" food. Though the best time to stop by is sunday for BRUNCH!! The Make-your-own Bloody Mary Bar is impressive and i always have a new drink when i go up! I love that.
Casual place, rustic atmosphere..great food and good service!
The storied Deer Park Tavern - Great place for food, drink and good fun.
A dive bar first and restaurant poorly lit and not super clean. I have lived in this area for many years and the deer park used to be a much better place. Now a days the menu is small (as they cater to college kids mostly who want beer not food) and plain as well as lackluster for whats ok it. Most the food is ok but nothing to rave about. But my biggest issue with this place is that they refuse to fo simple things like take takeout orders or even answer the phone. If you are looking to take a dive into an overpirced beer then the deer park tavern is the place for you otherwise there are mucb better places on main street. Klondike or iron hill being a hige step up from the dingy park.
Good bar but nothing beats the Bloody Mary Bar ....a hidden gem in the back of the bar
Good atmosphere and good food
In Deer Parks defense I went to late to get a good feel for the place. Wasn't able to try any of the food. Everything else from the patrons, staff, and atmosphere was straight up bar life. Nothing to complain about, nothing that really stood out. Next time I'll be sure to arrive at a more reasonable time.
Always good our server Tracey gave use the inside scoop on desert. Thank you for great fish and chips Cod on newspaper with chips pom fritt and a Rouge Love Stout. Dessert apple dumpling oh yes goes well with a triple espresso.
Visited the Deer Park after 20 years away from Newark. It's the same as ever. So, if you're young, like the college town combination of music hall, restaurant, and dive bar, you'll love it. If you're older and not a nostalgic barfly, it'll still be good...
Half price burgers each Wednesday, nice historical sport bar on the Main street in Newark. Popular for lunch and evening weekends.
Fun college town bar. However it seems to be more of a late 20's, 30s restaurant/bar anymore. Right up my alley. The food is perfect and the prices are great. Drink prices are on point as well. You'll definitely have fun, especially with the live bands that play at night upstairs, where you can dance, socialize on the heated porch, and not break your wallet. The place has history and has a great vibe.
Upstairs, nice spot!
Deer Park is great in my opinion. If you're coming for lunch or dinner, their food is nothing short of excellent. Their wait/bar staff is friendly and quick. Their drink prices are cheap and it (somehow) attracts a pretty balanced crowd and not majority college students. No matter why you're going you'll have a great time.
First time there. Didn't spend to much time in the place, but it looked cool.
The staff made a very bad impression on my friend visiting from Mississippi. He was accused of being drunk and denied entry despite being sober because he has autism spectrum disorder and they thought he looked and sounded eccentric. They made excuses that he was stumbling despite him standing completely still. I will not be returning, nor bringing DPT any further tourism.
Not the same as it used to be. Prices have gone up and portions have gone down. But still a great place to go with my old College friends. Brings back memories.
Great! Kevin and all the staff were kind and aware
Closest thing to a townie bar left on Main street. Dirty as it is historic. This place can change owners and be remodeled over and over again but it always turns back into the same old bar we know and love.
Amazing food and bartender!
Good place to eat and unwind on a Friday night. Parking gets a bit crowded.
Great time great food with a nice atmosphere
Highly recommend this place. The food is very good, decent draft beer selection, very clean. The only negative is he seem to never have enough help for the amount of people. Service is kind of slow if you have a short window for lunch during the work day.
Service was horrible. Not waitress fault. Deer park just didn’t care about us: two kids, two adults. We waited an hour for food and had to ask repeatedly. We will never go here again for food.
Deer Park Tavern has a wonderful Sunday brunch menu and thier "build your own bloody mary bar" is a fantasy deal. We try to get there one a month.
Deer park tavern clearly has its fans, though my experience was meh. The highlight was the service, our server was attentive and personable. I had the hummus app and the ravioli. Both sounded good on the menu, but turned out so-so. Definitely have had better. If your interest is the bar scene, then the atmosphere and noise level should be fine, if you want a nice quiet dining experience, you might want to try elsewhere.
The service was great. Anna was on top of game five star
Great bloody Mary bar good breakfast
Good Sunday morning brunch....
Great place to kick back with friends. Casual dining and drinks.
Cool.place..good eats!
A memory that will last a life time
Service was great, breakfast was ok. More of lunch or dinner spot. Would have given 3 1/2 stars but not an option.
We love the deer park!
Cool college bar. Reasonable drink prices. Decent amount of seating/space.
Good food, but was there on a Wednesday afternoon, so was pretty much empty. If I go in the evening I'll revise my rating.
Reminds you of an old Irish bar, fun place, good food
Good drinks, decent pub food. It's historic if you're into that. Very busy nightlife especially on weekends. Avoid going when college is in if you don't like a crowd. Albeit the townies are always there.
Rowdy atmosphere after 9pm. Great bartenders, great nachos...great live entertainment venue.
Great club/bar, the food is good. The staff are cool.
Good specials but i liked the old one better.
Ive been meant times b4 and had a great time. Today though the bartender was more concerned with his gf and didn't pay much attention to his customers. It's a shame really cuz normally it's much better.
Food was ok. Nice rustic dive bar. Rich in history. Carpets needed to be vacummed, didn't have silverware on the table until our meals came. (Asked twice) On the edge of University Delaware Campus. Friendly host and managers. Very busy (Graduation). Would be willing to try again.
A well known establishment in Newark, Delaware. Their Sunday Brunch is well worth your attention. Every item on the menu is worthy! If you like a drink with your meal, the "make your own" Bloody Mary is worthy. You are served a tall glass with ice & vodka. You then go to the "fixings" bar with every kind of mixer, filler, vegetable, seafood and mushrooms, or pickles, and hot sauce you could ever imagine!
Deer Park Tavern is one of my friend's favorite places to eat. The quality of the food is wildly inconsistent. Sometimes I can get a perfect burger, done to the correct temperature, while other times a burger will come out charred like a hockey puck. If Tone is working the kitchen then my food will almost always be great. If he isn't, then it varies... A lot. The service varies too. Sometime of the staff are amazing while others can leave you waiting for far too long.
Food was good but it was cold by the door where we were seated
Good food
Don't miss this local icon which has stood the test of time. Clean and congenial even when busy. They make their own fabulous potato chips! A very pleasant surprise for brunch, and a consistent good value for casual lunch or dinner.
Love Deer Park!!! This place is great... family friendly in the afternoon and evening... great place to unwind with friends at night.
An historic building....delicious food. Very reasonable prices!
This place is main street history. Open minded people. The ghost of Edgar Allen poe chills there. And EVERY "type" of person chills there from corporate events, to dope college girls, to locals, to blacks, whites, Asians, and every thing. Families chill. Good food. Good nightlife. Love this places dynamic way.
Good prices, good variety of drinks. Typical pub menus. Good staff. Mixed age group during the day. UD students at night. Lots of locals.
Love this place!!! Great food and great service. Brunch is amazing can’t wait to go back!! Please bring back Bumpin Uglies
Great bartenders, cheap drinks- definitely worth a visit.
Service was prompt. Waiter was very nice. Drinks were brought quick but not made well (not usual here). The water was awful. Not sure if their fault or if something going on in Newark. Maybe the ice turned the drinks bad?? For only a few people in the restaurant at 315 on Friday, it took 28 minutes for appetizers (dip, nachos and wings) to get to the table and 41 minutes for meals (wrap, hot roast beef and soup). Food was great though.
We really like this place. It's not fancy, but it has good food and atmosphere, and we've been pleased with the service. Portions are generous, and the crab cakes (Jumbo Lump Crab Bombs) are excellent. University of Delaware fans should check out the Blue Hen in the disply case!
Good was good, but the portions were small especially considering the price. The crab bomb tasted great but it was a small portion, understandably so because of crab prices, but be advised. Service was a little slow, I think they were understaffed for a Saturday night.
The last privately owned bar on main street. The island in the corprate river that main street has become.Thank you !For areal good time.
Classic Newark / University of Delaware restaurant. Pretty good food. Nice beer selection.
Good food at a reasonable price given that one can eat here for $12-20. The onion rings and fried cheese wedges are really good.
It is a local Watering Hole. I can't say that it's special. It is I hang out for the college people and the locals. The building does hold some historical value for the town and it has that kind of quality on the inside of an Old Tavern. The food was okay. My group mostly got burgers. The stuffed Meatballs were extremely firm. I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with the place but I will say that I'm not likely to go out of my way to go back. I will say this in its favor, it is a lot nicer there on a weekend during the day then I remember it being 30 years ago, when I was much younger.
The first time I ordered from here I got shrimp and crab alfredo and there was no crab at all.. ? It came with 5 shrimp , tomatoes and broccoli.. the alfredo sauce did not taste like alfredo at all, it seemed like some other kind of sauce concoction made... i love Noodles this was very disappointing, and it wasn't a nice big portion like you advertise under "large plates".? Idk.. i thought it would have been better .. i will not order from here again ..way over proced for what I have been provided with . Im not even Full..
Great breakfast! Fun staff. Always a great time here.
TL;DR Extremely impolite and racist staff, with a general manager being the worse among them. Terrible food, and if you're in the military, be ready to be treated terribly. In my entire life I have never been more disrespected by a business who wants to make any type of profit. I will start off with the food, which I have only had twice as the first time when I got a NY strip, it was overcooked and dry, and the waiter was no help whatsoever, so I basically payed $22 for a piece of beef jerky. Second time I had a Farmhouse burger, but I ordered it with no cheese, when I go and take a bite there was cheese in it, it's no big deal, I tell the waitress and I immediately get the most astounding look of disgust towards me, with a tone that sounded like she wanted to kill me, after I ate my new burger and left, I had a severe food poisoning to the point I had to go to the hospital, so I'm not sure if they served me an old patty out of spite or their food is just that bad. I will also like to add how nasty looking the place was, as if they didn't care about cleaning it from the night before. I will now turn my attention towards their weekend nights, to which I usually don't think of Deer Park as the first place to go to, the only reason I go is because my friend lives on south main street, so walking I have to pass by it, and we always figure we can going for a second, see if anyone we know is there so we can all go to a more respectable place like Grottos, Finn McCool's, or Klondike Kate's. Walking in you have to go through this guy, as another reviewer puts it better than I do, "He's about 5'9-5'11, blonde hair, blue eyes, stocky.. I'm afraid he may have never developed proper social skills. He finds everyone on social media, and harass them. When you tell him you are not interested, he doesn't give up." Not only is he uncomfortable to talk to, he's also racist and apparently hates military people. I start off with one thing I heard him say to someone, as he takes the IDs of whoever is not over 21, but instead of shredding them like any regular human being should do, he keeps a "collection" at his house, and I'm not sure what he does with the people's information, if he looks them up as well and harasses them, sells them on the black market, looks at the pictures for his own personal pleasure, or whatever other thing he does with them, but that is extremely creepy and uncomfortable. Not only that he has, in many occasions, been racist to people coming in, calling them and myself included names, in some occasions have heard and seen people being turned away as he calls them some sort of racial name with a smile on his face. He has also denied me entry because he thought my ID was fake, so clearly if he's going to be a bouncer, he needs to get his eyes checked. The one day I just completely lost it with this guy was when he took a look at one person in my group, and just decided to deny access to my entire group, I was dead sober at that point, I had just came out of duty in the Marines and all I wanted to do was have fun with friends, I went off on him and as soon as I mentioned I was a Marine, all he had to say was "so? I could care less about the military or what you all do." I'm sorry, but if you are at all trying to make money, having the first impressions of your place be that bouncer, I'm surprised you guys still have business. I decided I had enough of it and called the general manager Tim, to put a long story short, he was more racist, more insensitive, and rude than anyone in the entire staff combined, did not listen to a single thing I said and just decided to pretty much flip me off. Now I don't know if just because he had the anonymity of not being face to face that compelled him to be more rude, or if that's just the way he usually is, but considering he's the last line of hope that place had, I do not expect anything other than filth from that place. If you have any type of respect for yourself or anyone that you ever come in contact with, don't go to Deer Park, there's much better places on Main Street.
Good food, great beer selection (including some local exclusives) and superb service. We have frequented this Newark landscape for years, and service and quality has been consistent... But the floor is no longer as sticky as it used to be!! Great brunch year-round... And great atmosphere for every occasion. Work events or small parties can be held upstairs!!
Good solid college bar and grill. The food was good but service lackluster.
Nachos were good. Boneless wings were overdone. I couldn't finish eating them and the dish was removed from my bill. Other party members had the regular wings. 2 plates were fine, 3rd plate was overdone. Chicken cheesesteak was good.
Great food, wonderful service, enjoyed thoroughly!
Hit or miss with the music. Nice investment for food and drinks
One of my all time favorite taverns. ..historic. ..good food..good ole atmosphere
Nothing better than traditional!
Went here to grab some drinks and a taco. Pretty cool place
We were at the Deer Park Tavern for lunch. We waited a long time to be served. Plus, the salads we ordered were warm and the lettuce was starting to brown. They forgot the chicken, so we had to wait longer. The portions were tiny and we were hungry when we left. For $30, very disappointed. You can see their pat response below.
Great drink specials and lively atmosphere after 10pm on weekends.
Food was cold and it took forever.
great place to enjoy sports ,food is good too
Come here all the time bar tenders are great, drinks are cheap, food is good you can't go wrong. Kevin and Kendra are great at what they do
I've been coming here many years, it's a great college bar.
Deer Park Tavern has been around for a long time. Maybe over a hundred years. I started going there when I was 16 years old, about 40 years ago. Loved it then and love it now. Went last Friday night with friends to see a band that a friend plays in. Great times
Historic brick building at the edge of Newark, DE. with rustic atmosphere. Outstanding menu of sandwiches, platters, a la carte items, beverages, and desserts. Certainly go here hungry -- portions good-sized. Never disappointed when eating any meal here. Just know the noise level gets a bit much, so be prepared to speak loudly to your dining partners.
Unproffesional Staff. The establishment is not what it used to be. Edar Allen Poe rolls in his grave and the stuffed Blue Hen on display wishes it could escape. A Newark Policeman told he dislikes the bounce staff and has had issues with them.
A Newark institution! I have been coming here for nearly 30 years. I stop here every time I pass through town. Despite several ownership changes they have done a good job of keeping the character intact. Good food, good beer, helpful college staff. Don't miss the mid-week half-price deals (especially the nachos)!
I go to deer Park often, great beers! Food is standard fare, nothing special. The quality changes because of the cooks. For beer and bar fare it is awesome!
I was there for brunch and the food was average at best. Don't bother with the french toast as it was chewy and relatively flavorless. The atmosphere was nice but the chairs are super painful. Overall you probably want to go for the bar not the brunch.
Old. Dirty. FANTASTIC AMBIANCE! History. LOVE IT.
Some food ,burgers have gone downhill. Fries Luke warm. Need food runners. Soup took 30 min. Not all the time though.
Nice atmosphere, friendly service and good food
Great Bloody Mary Bar. Copious amounts of seafood and other condiments plus Vodka to make your own Bloody Mary. Great food options and a great time with friends!
The food is great and the atmosphere of an historic building just feels comfortable. The staff is on top of their game also.
Great history and atmosphere
Love the bloody Mary bar and Mimosa that are offered during brunch on the weekends! The menu offers variety and the popcorn is always fresh!
Always a great place to go. Good specials, great servers.
Food was delicious. Nice place
College girls, good music when not hip hop.
A U of D classic. Best Sunday brunch. Highly recommend.
The food can be either really great or nothing to write home about. Liked showing up for brunch/bloody bar but found overtime the food was hit or miss. Also had issues with the bloody bar, mostly in that there were never any toppings even though it was still being served.
Very poor service kept forgetting our drinks the food was very good
This place is an oddity. Good drink specials and great food but strange rules to enter. Like they don't allow sweat pants.??? I came there with business partner's of mine. We were in Newark one night and decided to go for beers and some pub fare. We were stopped at the door because on of my associates had sweat pants on. Keep in mind it was winter, on a Wednesday and they were dead. We had money to spend and were turned away over pants? We went down to Grotto's which is two blocks away and were welcomed with open arms. The park does have great bands that play there but the sweat pants thing kinda left a sour taste so haven't been back since.
Went here for a bridal shower on the 2nd floor. Food was good. The building was quite disgusting though. I couldn't believe how dirty it was. My shoes were sticking to the floor pretty bad. They need to do some serious routine cleaning.
Love the make your own bloody mary bar on the weekend and I always get the seafood omelette. Yum
Good food great service
Love Sundays there ....lots of people ...three piece band ... service is usually great .. food was good also.
Classic college bar. If you want to drink and good, Capital-C Cheap food, this is your place! The operations are very disorganized and the wait staff (all college kids) are friendly but not overly invested in the customers. To be honest, that sounds disparaging, but I was happy to Take advantage of half price burger night with the kitchen sink burger. If you’re no longer a college kid, prepare to enjoy some nostalgia with your dinner, but wisely avoid over consuming the bargain prices drink options! I will happily return if I’m again in the area.
Love this place. Great food, atmosphere, and reasonable.
From ny to this place and each time it gets bettee .. The decor and history is amazing. Food selection is great. Handa down greatest veggie burger .. The deink selction was almost that of a new York bar so i was pleased and prices were great !!!
Nice 2nd floor balcony. Sunday brunch is delicious! Affordable drinks, free popcorn, daily specials, occasionally live music, good service. If you like trains, history, or Edgar Allen Poe you have to come here!
This local pub gets five stars because it is exactly what one would expect from a well run restaurant. Nothing fancy or trendy about the place, just a comfortable casual atmosphere. Most importantly I have NEVER been disappointed with my meal! Always arrives in a timely manner and always delicious.
Very nice atmosphere, good food & the drinks were great.. Nice specials each day too!!
Good food and drinks. Good bar atmosphere. We went to watch world cup and a couple of the TV's did not work.
Great place for a beer! Loved it! Can't wait to try their food.
Decent spot, never had a "5 star" experience, but never one so bad I would never return either. Popcorns good, drink prices are not horrible given the college area
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE UNKNOWN PLACES. THE SELECTION OF BREWS AND REALLY GOOD.
Good was good and service on the deck was perfect for a great weathered day.
Classic tavern/ bar food. Okay beer selection. Decent, but nothing special. Everything I touched was sticky.
Super rude security guards, not all of them though. BE CAREFUL!
In retrospect maybe a 2, not a 1 star experience. Rating based mostly on slow inattentive service from a waiter unfamiliar with the food and beer menus. Ordered a Jai Alai and he came back to the table to clarify and asked if I wanted a "Jay Lay."
Look for the half priced burgers and you will have a great time
Average food, drinks are ok,, happy hour ok
Always good food and efficient and friendly staff. We come here 1-2 times per month for lunch with the team of 6 at our office.
They sponsored the Taco's & Rita run. Its a brick building with a lot of charm. 2 floors and multiple bars. They also have a stage area for live music. Cute.
Fantastic food. Awesome service and a great choice of beers ;)
Let me first start by saying that the service was impeccable. However, the brisket sandwich was horrible. What should have been fall-apart beef with lots of flavor was dry, tough, and jerky-like. This made the sandwich largely inedible. I would suggest anything but that particular sandwich.
Historic place and the atmosphere is out of this world! Waiters and bartenders are very nice. Great food and drinks.
Always have liked deer park and never had anything bad to say about the place. Good food good drinks and good environment
