This Restaurant is classified in the category of Hamburger restaurant.
Great burger and even better milkshakes.
Super cute place. All the waitresses are really nice and the food is affordable. They have great milk shakes and floats.
Good hamburgers, fries, milkshakes and ice cream. Reasonably priced. The inside could use an upgrade and be a tad more clean. Went to this place as a child - always loved it. Especially the old time milkshake served in the aluminum container - yum! My husband's banana split was also very good.
Ah!!!!
Got the special bacon burger with egg it was delicious cooked perfectly bacon nice and crispy the french fries however could be a lot crisper than they are nothing worse than a wilted french fry
Delicious food.
This place has been around forever and they have some of the best charbroiled burgers you will ever taste.
Waitress was great, but some plastic was in my moms food, we didnt want it taken off because she already ate most of her food but they did anyway, just wanted them to be more cautious of the food they put out
Great old time dinner feel to this place. Service was excellent, my shake was thick and tasty. Bison burger was very juicy. Will stop by whenever I am in town.
Food and Beverage was excellent....! 70's Theme.
Best milkshakes in city.
I new of the Charcoal Pits reputation but that wasnt my experience. My son and I stopped here for dinner. My son ordered his burger medium and it was cooked medium rare. I ordered my steak medium rare and it was cooked medium to medium …
Fun atmosphere. Great burgers!!
I had a banana split in this 50's Diner. They have your typical hamburger and hot dogs and ice cream creations. The banana split was a good size and very good. You can't go wrong with their ice cream creations. Try it, you just might like it. The waitress was polite and attentive.
Def not good visit, was bizarre, had a strange waitress with very poor english n took a half hour to get our food, food just ok, but hard to mess up a burger, hardly any customers so dont understand the long wait n why did i get the strangest waitress ever? I most likely wont go again, plenty of better places
Service was terrific and food was fantastic.
Milkshake was great but the customer interaction did not impress me. Yes there was only two people but had the cashier taken the time to at least welcome me, I wouldn’t have had a problem.
Great food and the sundaes and milkshakes are great
Customer service from some of waitresses was short. Only one young girl was working hard, supposedly a trainee. The one waitress was nasty and barking orders at her. In all food was great.
Burger was great, love the home made milkshakes!
I go up 202 I like the theme and food service is nice as well
The hostess initially turned me off (as this was my 1st visit) as the place was empty and she took too long to acknowledge us and couldn't even get up off her behind to actually walk us to a table just pointed and yelled where to sit (one star lost). The waitress made up for the hostess as she was nice and friendly. The food came promptly and was good. I ordered boneless wings, a salad and a steak, and everything was cooked fine. The restaurant itself looks like it's in need of some serious renovations though and I understand it's supposed to give you that nostalgic feel, but Nifty Fifties is similar and they knew upgrades were necessary to attract new business.
This place has been around for 60 years and I've been coming here over a thirty year span. Its largely the same as I remember with snug boothes and a counter if you're eating alone. Service is friendly and was very fast the day I visited. I got a special burger with bacon and blue cheese which was great. Fries were out of the freezer but not terrible. I wish I had room for a shake because they make them by hand fresh and looked fantastic.
This place that was once GREAT is now run down, slow terrible service, outdated menus .... waited 15mins just for our drink order, the waitress's accent was so thick there was a huge language barrier upon ordering or ANYTHING we needed and coughing EVERYWHERE... and didn't notice she dropped fries in my root beer float. Used to be a good retro family place.... NEVER going back
I've been coming here since as long as I can remember now live at least a half an hour away when I'm in the area I always try to stop in I enjoy the Yuengling battered haddock with fries a little like being in a time machine
Charcoal Pit is a great place to eat burgers and fries. I always look forward to their ice cream.
May be a local favorite but needs remodeling.
This is a longtime Delaware old time hamburger and milkshake joint. It looks pretty much the same as it did 50 years ago and I think some of the servers have been working there those 50 years. They gave other stuff too...but I recommend the triple thick black and white chocolate malt!
Absolutely loved it! Like taking a step back in time in the best way possible.
Solid basic food. I've been coming here since I was a kid. The food and the decor haven't changed in over 25 years, and in this case that's a good thing! Get a milkshake, you won't regret it!
Food was ok. Found a DEAD FLY in my coffee... Waitress took the cup... Manager comped my $1.75 coffee and he didn't say a word to me. Smh. We won't be back.
Great food and service.
Cute little restaurant. Very nostalgic. Food is reasonably priced and pretty good. The major flaw is that is hasn't been refurbished since it was built which is great for the charm of the place but terrible if you are a larger person because there is no room in the booths! My family can't eat there together (even though we would like to) because my 2 sons and husband are all well over 6 foot tall and we just can't fit in a booth together so we have to do take out which kinda sucks because we enjoy going to out to eat as a family! We would definitely go there more if they had a few bigger booths.
Crabcakes were deliscous waitress was the best.
Yummy old-school burgers and shakes; a real blast from the past!
This place hasn't changed since the last time I was here 20 years ago, and probably not for 20 years before that. And that's a good thing. Good, old fashioned milkshake and burger joint.
Not what it used to be growing up. The waitress was more interested in sitting next to us waiting for us to pay her.
Went there with my son (he's 27). Greeted promptly, sat quickly, gave us coloring menu and crayons (?), over the top gregarious server, maybe 7 tables and 20 customers at the time, food was good - but, just as I told the server, "Why ask how I want my burger, since they won't cook it medium anyway?" She guaranteed me it would be. She checked back. Well done. She offered to have it replaced. I told her that it was okay and that I less than rarely get my burgers cooked right. Kinda reminded me of the 60's and 70's diners in Pennsylvania and Virginia that I went to as a kid.
Good bison burger&gr8
After a full day of shopping, we were tired and hungry. We were seated and waited on immediately. We had the Texas Burger and Egg Burger. Both were cooked perfectly, brought out hot and juicy, and delicious. Clean, plenty of free parking, great service, and tasty good food at reasonable prices. We'll be back!
Good food and service
Delicious food brings back memories!!
Not nearly as nice as the Kirkwood hwy location - decor is extremely outdated and the overall feel of the restaurant is 'run down". Food and service was average at best.
202 Landmark - Not much has changed here in the last 45 years and unfortunately it looks it. I know there is a nostalgic factor but it could use a little freshening up. The Pit Special is always a favorite just add the cheese and sautéed onions and a little side of mayo and you have the perfect burger. You have your choice of the 4oz or 8oz but either one gives you a nice size plate of food. If you're not in the mood for French fries, go for the Pit Deluxe, same good burger just no fries. The onion rings are always a nice add-on because they are delicious. Milkshakes or an ice cream sundae make the meal almost complete. Before you go get a hot fudge cake for dessert, it's enough for 2 and you won't be sorry. If you're in the mood for ice cream they have a number of area high school themed sundaes which can easily satisfy an ice cream craving for 2 and with a few friends you can tackle the kitchen sink.
One if my all time favorite places of all time
Their milkshakes are the best anywhere ! While the burgers are good the buns were ridiculous, way too big !
Staff treats you like you are bothering them
Great place for lunch!
Best shakes I've had in Delaware
Not impressed with wait staff. Woman waitress sneezing did not wash her hands and had odd behavior. Food was mediocre at best. Old and outdated worn interior .I won't be back.
The pulled pork is good, served with Western sauce. Battered onion rings were not greasy and the sesame bun was fresh.
Great place with awesome food and wonderful staff.
An old Wilmington hangout that holds lots of memories from the past. Memories are better than delivery but the shakes are still second to none.
Great burgers and fries and ice cream.
This restaurant was an icon of my youth which I had not visited in years. Sad to say, the experience was so disappointing. The establishment appeared tired and need of care. The service was extremely slow. The food came out before the …
Best burgers n shakes in town
The food was delicious with extremely generous portions. The staff was on point. The atmosphere had a retro diner feel. The only downside is the seating, every table only holds about 4 people and are not kind to larger people.
Food was great!!! Service kinda sucked
Nice place for families to eat.
Our dinner here was...weird. I'm not from the area so they aren't losing repeat business from me, but I wanted to share my experience. It seems like a lot of other reviews let stuff pass due to nostalgia and their connection to the place, but this first timer was not impressed. Being ignored by 3 different people when we walked in was how it all started. When we finally were waved over to get a seat the Hostess seemed annoyed that we didn't want to sit at the table directly in front of the open kitchen area. She then said some strange things about having stories to tell about the place, then cryptically said "only order a burger and a shake." Still not sure what that meant. What's wrong with the rest of the food? Our server was friendly enough, and the food was ok. We stopped here because of the retro vibe of the building, but we weren't expecting so much weirdness.
Best burgers in Delaware. Really good service and root beer too, but what I really love about this amazing restaurant is the atmosphere that this place has. My grandma has eaten here, then my mom, and now me, and all of us really don't see that much of a difference, except for increase in modern tools and stuff
This place seems to be a popular place however I was not impressed. Milkshake was great. Our meal and service definitely need improvement. Needless to say I will only go back for a milkshake.
We had a great meal, the burgers were great and the crab cake sandwich was wonderful.
Good comfort food and landmark '50's & '60's nostalgia (burgers, etc). It's the only place in DE I know of that you can get an authentic chocolate malted milkshake.
This place still was old fashioned but the food was excellent.
A tasty burger and fries in a diner atmosphere.
Food was awesome as well as our waitress. I highly recommend.
Classic 1950s hamburger dpot. Hamburgers are a perfect size and cooked as reqyested. Milkshake was a true..not too thick..homemade shake. Ice cream desserts are wonderful !
Best burgers and Sundaes in the Region. Love Charcoal Pit and have enjoyed their food all my life.
Not clean, food was not good. Portion sizes were not correct. I was actually afraid I would get sick here. It needs a serious overhaul and update.
Food was great, service was good. But it is the 21st century, remodel a section to make it comfortable for people with disabilities for instance somebody in a wheelchair like me. Then I can give you four stars
Classic hamburger and sundae spot.
It's always clean. Staff is fabulous! Food's great!
Always a treat, not much has changed in the twenty years I've gone to this place. Good for families, couples, wholesome dining. Wonderful burger and cheese steak.
Southwest broiled chicken was delicious... bathrooms need to be cleaned more often though
They make great burgers. My triple thick black and white shake was perfect.
The malts here are a must have! Sundae specials are also a great choice! Guaranteed to make your children smile!
Aging small chain with a unique atmosphere but average food. My steak was sadly average bordering on poor. Great for a hamburger and shake.
Sandwich was diner quality and shake was good
Love the milkshakes and Best Burger
Super affordable good food and shakes
Waitress was great but you do get ignored when you walk in. Once you get a table, the service is great. Great diner style place to take kids. Love the burgers and shakes. Had 4 boys in tow and we felt at home, not out of place, at this restaurant. When I was younger, we used to go here after school dances. Fond memories of this place, and I love sharing that with the kiddos.
Gotta love charcoal pit for their shakes and burgers. Simple, no frills menu. All good food, and friendly staff
This is a great old school diner. 50s vibe... Food is amazing. Prices are right. Try the Kitchen Sink Sundae!
Had a 1/2lb Burger and fries. That was one tasty and big burger!! Great fries too. Tall cups for sodas, free refills, and the prices are reasonable. I'd recommend you go check it out. It looks about the same as it did when they first opened the joint back in the 50's. Very nostalgic in there.
Food is fresh and good. But you have to finish you meal with thier amazing ice cream
Local cult classic. Not everything on the menu is good, but their burgers and entrees are very good. The ice cream and milkshakes are really the prize here. Getting a milkshake to go is honestly the best.
Growing up in Wilmington, this was the go to spot with friends throughout middle and high school. Nice to see that not much has changed over the years! If you're in the area, definitely stop in for a burger and fries. And if you have room, their milkshakes and sundaes are to die for.
Tasty and quick. Great place to go to for food or dessert.
The service was good and the food was okay. The icecream was delicious.
Burger wasn't prepared as I ordered it which was very disappointing considering the waitress wasn't attentive at all. 20mins went by from ordering and she finally came to my table and I had to then reorder another one which will take another 10mins or so. The restaurant itself as cool but due to the service, as a 1st time visit, this will be my last.
Service was ok, food was exactly what we expected.
I used to go here as a child all the time and quite a bit in my twenties.... I haven't been in quite a long time....How times have changed... Wouldn't recommend..... Food seems to be standard Sysco fare.....My salad came with a packet of Ken's dressing...The burger I had was not very good....On top of that, for what you get and the quality, overpriced in my opinion......
Ribs were fall off the bone and fries and salad was great I will definitely be going back again
My Delmonico Steak was chewy. My sister had a cheese steak that she said was very greasy. I have been going there for years and it is not the same. It seems to by under new management. I will not be going back. The service was not bad.
Service was excellent very nice and helpful. Food was delicious.
Great char-broil food.
Not what I was expecting.
A real old fashioned diner. Great shakes. I always order onion rings.
Great burgers, great ice cream, great prices, great for kids. It's not fancy, but I very much doubt that's what your looking for when you go here.
Nice place to eat, old place smell.
The Charcoal pit is an old fashioned 50's style dinner. The food is really good with good size portions. The staff is courteous and attentive. The drinks are served in to-go cups so you can get a refill to take with you.
Good food and great ice cream. An oldies restaurant. My husband and went there when we dated in the sixties
Good food, inexpensive, good service.
Reminded me of the one that used to be in Pottstown, PA and my grandfather used to take me there. Always smelled divine at that end of town. Burgers were good, but the milkshake was the BEST I’ve had since the 1960s!!
Visited this restaurant 50 years ago. Still the same.. great hamburgers, sundaes.. kids love this place.
Decent food, reasonable prices. Good lunch spot.
Has had a great reputation for 60 plus years.
I've been going to this place since I was a little girl. Nothing has changed. Place has a nostalgic feel and look to it. Hamburgers are excellent and you always get good service.
Great staff, good and plenty of food. Reasonable prices.
Good burger and fries also great thick milkshakes
Food was mediocre, service was slow, waitress kept going on and on about how its her 2nd job and she was still stuck on the other one. Made poor suggestions of replacement/upgrade options that left me less than satisfied.
As always. Good food. Super service.
The food was mediocre and the service was ridiculous. I ordered a cheesesteak with American cheese and an apple juice with no ice; the steak sandwich had Kraft single cheese and the juice was filled to the brim with ice. Also, Mung seemed over worked, as if she was running the whole place, and she could not get the orders straight after several repeats. Sadly, the place did not live up to hype.
Great! Joyce is best wait person in DE!
Loved it when I lived in PA as a kid and love it with my family now when I visited. My wife LOVED LOVED LOVED the chicken cheese and bacon sandwich with a special sauce. Their malted milkshakes are great even if Alex has trouble making them.
A local landmark since the 50s. The biggest ice cream cones for a couple of bucks. Flame broiler and good fries. Great prices especially for kids and seniors. We go there regularly.
Just had the worst experience at charcoal pit. Lady taking my order clearly doesn’t know that coffee is espresso when I ask for my coffee milkshake. ( she said they don’t have it and I got their and I see espresso on the board and even checked to make sure it was in stock too) Received my order wrong. Didn’t have onions on my hot dog n my milkshake was watery. This is the second time I’ve had bad service at take out for very simple two hot dog and a milkshake orders. Honestly pathetic from a staple on 202
The burger was tasty and fast, tasted like it came off the backyard grill. Fries were nice and crisp.
It very good
This is diner with an old school vibe and perfect diner food. We inhaled the burgers, fries, and onion rings. It's nothing fancy, but the atmosphere is great.
Haven't been there in years. Food was great and the service was even better
My favorite place for delicious burger, fries and a shake!
Nice diner style food served by friendly staff.
If not for the seedy, gross bun it would have been one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. No joke. They make insane burgers. GREAT MEAT. Change that bun.
The Charcoal Pit has been here forever and for good reason. Classic burger joint and incredible shakes.
Food is mediocre; everything is frozen including the fries. Not sure I'll give them a 2nd chance. So many better options for the price.
My first visit, recommended by my 8 year old daughter, needless to say great choice! Awesome burgers and friendly staff. We will be back soon!
