Delicious. Went for birthday dinner, hidden gem that we're definitely going to visit again. The pumpkin mushroom soup is a must.
Great food
Friendly accommodating staff serving good food.
A lovely place. Their pumpkin/mushroom soup is incredible. Always awesome specials. Friendly and efficient staff. Perfect place for a quiet lunch.
Always an excellent meal. Great wait staff and very responsive. My favorite restaurant!
First visit, won't be my last. Fantastic service and the food left nothing to be desired. Hat's off to the chef.
Good food and good prices. Nicely decorated dining room.
Food: Very "fancy" food is good. Specialties are great. All other food is terrible and overpriced. Service: Some of the worst service of your life can be found in this place. Atmosphere: High class and warm, but maybe a little snooty.
excellent food
Amazing pumpkin curry soup! My wife and I came from Philly to pick up some soup and have it in our freezer for when we crave it
Good food kinda pricey
Very great
The best pumpkin mushroom soup EVER!!!
I've visited the Back Burner several times and have had mixed experiences. My most recent experience left a lot to be desired so I wanted to leave a review in hopes that improvements can be made. My wife had made reservations for us on Valentine's Day. When we arrived, there was a chaotic scene at the waiter/waitress station. I don't know if something was wrong with the system, but there were several people trying to solve a problem and all seemed extremely stressed out. Luckily, our reservation appeared in the system and we were promptly seated. Our server was extremely friendly. Although I like the regular menu, for Valentine's Day, the menu had been limited. After we ordered our starters, one of the staff came by to deliver a rose. I thought this was a really nice gesture. Our starters came fairly quickly. I had a salad and my wife had some soup. We had only been eating our starter for about 3-5 minutes, when our main courses came out. There was no room on the table to put all the plates, so we felt forced to stop eating our starters in order to make room. I ordered the steak which was cooked as I requested and tasted good. My wife ordered some seafood pasta which, although it tasted good, had a ton of little shells in it and she was constantly having to pull them out of her mouth as she was chewing. Overall, the food seemed overpriced for what we got and we felt extremely rushed throughout the process just so the table could be turned over for the next customer. I think we were there less than 1 hour for what was supposed to be a nice Valentine's Day dinner. I'm not so sure we'll be returning any time soon.
love love the pumpkin soup!
Great food, service and ambience
We ate in the bistro and the crab cakes were yummy. All crab very little filler. Nice pleasant staff
Lobster special was fantastic, filet was delicious, and gluten free brownie dessert was spectacular! Wonderful service!
Tuesdays are 1/2 price burger night. Nice place to enjoy conversation and food with family or friends. Waitstaff is great.
Great food. Love the pumpkin mushroom soup.
They make this Better Cheddar and it's Awesome!!! Go get a pint.
Awesome selection of cheeses and amazing salads. Creative menu.
Nice atmosphere, good food, friendly staff. You cannot go wrong here.
Great pumpkin mushroom soup ! Crab Imperial was more like chopped up crab cake .
Great local restaurant with excellent food and atmosphere
Great Staff and 1/2 prices burgers are great.
Delicious steak
Amazing food and great service staff were amazing especially aine.
Great burgers on Tuesday night burger night. Fresh handmade good food done very well
We had a really good meal here. Local stuffed mushrooms were very good along with the jumbo crabcakes and bruschetta. Prices were mid-range. Friendly and attentive staff.
Very disappointing today. Food was lukewarm. I've had much better crab imperial much cheaper. Coffee and flat bread was good though.
Pumpkin mushroom soup was wonderful! Chicken pot pie not so much.. Someone forgot the chicken! I could only find one small piece ..
The food was a little better then average. The service was great. The prices were high for the amount of food you got. I also wish they would do a little for the military like a discount for service members. I would give it 3 1/2 ☆☆☆.
Servers are excellent and food is delicious. Would prefer portions to be a bit larger as many of their similar competitors provide larger sizes for similar service. Will be a return customer for sure
When I got to the restaurant the Menu did not have items on it that were listed on the online menu, because they were not changed for summer months online. The quiche was tasty, but the lettuce greens were riddled with wilted and decayed greens. Not very fresh. I had to pick through it. The apples in the caramel whisky apple bread pudding dessert were not so easy to chew, maybe because they were not cooked well enough or the wrong type of apple was used for cooking it. Salad dressing was good over the wedge of lettuce. I was surprised since the Back Burner has a good reputation and I was sorely disappointed by some of the items ordered. I appreciate the owner's response, but I am not sure I will be back as your food was not fresh.....much of the salad greens were decayed. I had to pick out the best looking greens to eat.....this is a real turn off. I expected more from a restaurant with a good reputation.
The place was very clean & the food reminds me of the 99# restaurants in Massachusetts & the prices are fine; The hostess / waitress was a little bit rude & I had taken the roll of putting the four of us to a both instead. The hostess & waitress was the same person & she had made a very loud issue about this for the public in this restaurant to be NOTICED & that's NOT a very POLITE thing @ all. The other waitstaff were exclusively wonderful to us totally. I have a Degree in the Culinary Arts field as a Pastry Chef & Head Chef in the most wonderful (5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ hotels from Boston Massachusetts to California & I would never do that to any customers @ all & maybe; The management team might want to retrain her in this type of atmosphere. There was more than plenty of seats & other booths to setup for an other party if needed. Sincerely, Mr. Russell MacDonald
Service was a little slow and filet was not that tender for the price.
Love this restaurant:(
Great food, good atmosphere and pleasant staff.
Mushroom soup was wonderful. Also had a great Burger.
A higher rating might be deserved, but my wife had to send the soup back because it was lukewarm. The restaurant has been in the community along time. Generally it is well thought of and a convenient place too go.
Good food.
Excellent service and great food
I loved the service, the decorations, and the food was the best I have ever had! Can't wait to come back!
pumpkin mushroom soup is delish.
Great place to take that special someone
I've had great food at this place, but frustratingly poor service. Yesterday I arrived with 5 friends at 4:30 for happy hour, but all of the bar tables had "reserved" signs on them (no people, just the signs). We were therefore seated in the restaurant. 10 minutes passed before we met our server, and found she would not honor happy hour prices anywhere but the bar area (still nearly empty). Wouldn't bother with a post but this isn't the first time the bar has been fully reserved and empty.
Pricey and snobby atmosphere for ok food
Went there for lunch today with a group of 28 co workers. They had us set up in a nice cozy back room that was great for our party. The servers were very pleasant and attentive to our needs and tried very hard to get the food out to all of us as quickly as possible but with a party of 28 a few people had to wait a extra minute. Food was very good, I got the shaved prime rib sandwich and from what others got and the comments I heard everyone seemed very happy! Really nice atmosphere and a hard working staff!!
Cool place
Relaxing yet formal with excellent service. Filet mignon was cooked perfectly, portions we're just right. Wine list has good variety.
Food was fair. Service so low. Over priced
Great service and fabulous food!
We celebrated a birthday which unfortunately the customer service was less then ...Will not be going back...
Love the atmosphere. Happy hour at the bar has great deals on apps and drinks.
I would rate more stars except for the fact that we happened to go here when they had half price wine bottles, a Monday night. And within no more than five minutes of leaving, (and forgetting the bottle at the table), the bottle was back with the bartender behind the bar. All that said, we were able to get our bottle of wine, inadvertently left at the table. Draw your own conclusions.
Their food is always delicious. You must try the pumpkin mushroom soup!
Always a fantastic meal, and the service is consistently very good!
Wonderful place. Good food, great service.
Good food and ambiance. We had a group of 20 people and the service and the kitchen were able to keep up with us. Prices are a bit steep.
Awesome Better Cheddar Dip!!
Great food, nice place
Excellent food and service whether in dining room or bar area.
Always one of my favorites you can never go with their filet stuffed with crabmeat.
I'm a total fan of Chef Chris Peters. I had wondered where he had gone after Nonna's. Found you! See you soon and eat your wonderful food.
Plenty of selection and tasty food! We used the To Go deli and were delighted! One of our favorite haunts for take-out.
A regular favorite on our dinner circuit. Several weeknight specials and even 1/2 price bottles of wine as one of the feature nights. We prefer to sit in the lounge, as it's a little softer lighting and we light the atmosphere.
I have enjoyed this place 3 or 4 times they make great food
I don’t know where to start. Came to your establishment Tuesday November 27th at 1pm with three other ladies to celebrate one of their birthdays. On our arrival we were sat and then re-sat to our request. Once seated we where given water and then where TOTALLY IGNORED for about a 17-20 minute period of time as 4 different employees walked past our table and I believe one of them was the manager Brian? Well needless to say we got up and walked out of your establishment. Not a good look for The Back Burner as I have been a patron for 30 plus years. To know we where there celebrating an occasion and to not be taken care of properly celebration or not has allowed the Back Burner to now LOSE 4 solid valuable customers who not only bring large revenue to your establishment but also affected the revenue of your surrounding merchants as we where planning on shopping in the surrounding stores but did not that day. Consumers are picky about where they spend their disposable income and unfortunately the Back Burner will not see any of ours again. Big mistake Back Burner big mistake.
Losing control when busy. 2.5 hrs and missing items. Empty glasses
Expensive. Terrible service. Just average food. I went in with high expectations and left disappointed. At one point had to insist to the waitress that I did, in fact, want the dish I was asking for instead of the special she was trying to push. Asked for wine with my dinner - it showed up as I pushed away my finished plate. I sampled from three plates - food was not bad, but far from great - rather bland. I don't plan on going back.
Good food and great ambience. Love the soups!
The service is slow. Like 1 hour of waiting. Food isn't tasty st all. Save your time and money.
Excellent service, food and drink. This is the venue that finally convinced me to (temporarily) give up on my 'no alcohol' pledge, their cocktails were that inviting. Having eaten here twice previously, I was expecting the higher than usual prices, but also the high quality of what was on offer, and I wasn't disappointed. I have family visiting over the New Year holiday, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the inside of Back Burner again soon...can't recommend highly enough for that special occasion.
The atmosphere was relaxing and fun.
Good food
The Back Burner is a Hockessin staple. Their dinner menu lacks along with the decor. I say if you want to try them out go for lunch. They have their pumpkin bisque soup which is delightful and their signature item. I've never been disappointed with lunch.
I had a very tasty power bowl that they made vegan.
love it!
This is my go to date night place. Service is always above avg, the food is too.
Used to come here before they removed the burger I came there for off the menu. Think they moved it too the bar side only or something. Pretty nice place, the quality of the food and the price you pay was pretty reasonable, least 2 years ago before we stopped going. Recommend a visit
Consistently good food. Love their pumpkin soup. Everything else pales by comparison but never had a bad meal there and prices are average. Nice atmosphere and attentive serving staff.
Had my birthday dinner in the cozy tavern room. A really great time, AWESOME food with our good friends!!
Loved it BUT>>>>>>> I do not know where else to post this, there is no e-mail contact, so here goes. While we had an incredible meal, wonderful ambiance, after dropping well over $200 for our meal, the $3 half cup of warm coffee just ruined the entire night. We did not even have a chance to get a refill or complain as once the coffee was served we never saw our server again. We will go back, but will not fall into that trap again. If BB reads this and wants to contact me, we were the table of 4 with the 7:15 reservation.
Pleasant atmosphere, beautiful steak, requested rare, got well done, killed the taste. My fiancee ordered her steak med rare, got medium, they need to check their cooking times!
Excellent service and delicious food!
Food is good.
My wife and friend like the pumpkin soup but thout it wasn't as good as remembered. I thought it was too sweet. My wife wanted to exchange the squash with potatoes or aspagas that came with the crab caked but was refused any changes what-so-ever. She switched to the twin 4 oz. filets which were ordered medium rare and came medium. I ordered the 7 oz. filet with mushrooms all in a pastry crust. I ordered medium rare and it was served well, dry and flakey. We will not return and I wouldn't recommend it again.
Great food! Great service! Great atmosphere!!
A longtime hidden gem in Hockessin! Pumpkin mushroom soup is amazing!
Food quality top notch!
Great for lunch, just above average for dinner, not many choices for dinner time.
Had a very nice dinner, will go again.
Classic long term steady quality
Very good food. Service less attentive.
The game burger was fantastic
Excellent Saturday lunch - we had enough to cover dinner! The six of us enjoyed each item ordered - pumpkin mushroom soup, soup du jour, smoked pork belly mac, blue cheese, poached pear salad, crab cake, filet, brownie sundae, and creme brulee. Unhurried dining in a lovely setting, recommended for special occasions.
Great food
Very good food in a pleasant atmosphere. Not outrageously priced. Recommend the scallops.
A little pricey but the food and service were both excellent.
Pumpkin Mushroom Soup is to die for. Don't knock it until you try it. I don't like mushrooms but love this soup
This place holds a higher standard for comfy foods and extravagant creations. Freshness is always key and they have it, always. There's just too much greatness to pick a favorite dish. Just visit already.
We have been there twice ,at a time when they weren't busy. We were seated quickly only to wait 25 min before anyone approached our table. They waitress was very friendly and apologetic. She did not know ingrediants in dishes. The meals were delicious. Nicely prepared. Very good meals, but twice we waited much to long for attension . We got the same apology, that it was the hostess error. Sorry not twice.
Very impressed by all the choices. All four of our ladies chose the quiche special. Scrumptious! We'll be back.
good half price burgers on Tuesdays!
Food is delicious. Go on week nights for discounted specials....Other nights its pricey.
Backburner racks
Food is excellent! Great atmosphere and servers always friendly and attentive.
Superb food and drinks!
Great Hamburgers
My wife and I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Our food is always cooked to perfection.
Good food. Simple elegance.
I've came to this place once before so I feel I should finally give them a review after multiple sitings. As my usual I started with the Caesar salad and a Crab Cake, followed by a Lobster Chowder. Then had their grilled f-range chicken as the main. My friend once had the salmon topped salad, garlic clams and pork loin. We shared the stuffed mushrooms. All was better than expected and nicely done. Their bar serves up nice stiff drinks! Great experience and very cozy. This is a must do, if your looking for a good diner in this town.
DO NOT GO HERE!! Where do I start? We (my wife and I) had a reservation and were seated right away (spoiler: only positive aspect of this review). Had no server even look at us for 23 minutes, despite obtaining water from someone after 15 minutes. Received an incorrect drink order, was served an incorrect entree (the correct one, a nightly strip steak special, came out cold), and was forced to stare at empty wine glasses for 15 minutes after being served. Full disclosure: our server offered to comp our dessert, but we declined as we were not interested in dessert, and no subsequent comp was offered for our numerous and prior inconveniences. I am baffled how such incompetant service allows The Back Burner to remain in business, much less score an average 4 star review. We live 10 minutes away and will never bother going here again.
Very bad meal here. Emailed complaint to restaurant guess they don't care. Soup came to table cold and scrimp and grits just horrible
Excellant taste!
Burger was good. Grilled cheese must have come with a stick of butter in it - too much.
Good food good vibes good people
Quaint place for lunch.
Great food and atmosphere.
Great taste testing cheeses
Really became a disappointment. No more Back Burner for me.
Slow and unattentive wait staff. Our empty drinks were on the table for most of the meal. Food was mediocre at best.
Great atmosphere only surpassed by the food which was excellent . Filet mignon was cooked great and no one out of our 4 party had any complaints it waitress Diana was an excellent server .
Good Food great service!
Has always been a wonderful place to eat but this time was different. We we're part of a prearranged package. They sat everyone in the back of the restaurant and it honestly felt like they were trying to hide us away. The food was good but felt scimpy by comparison to other times we have been there. The service was slow especially knowing we were coming. Never had the opportunity to order wine with dinner either, disappointed with the experience. Will return only because of our previous positive experience there. Was not the quality or evening we expected. The evening was a gift to my in-laws and I was embarrassed.
We enjoyed a memorable lunch after a wine tasting stop at Va La. The goat cheese board was delicious and, IMO, a bargain at $5. Fresh Oysters and bowls of their speciality Pumpkin Mushroom soup left us satisfied and happy. Our service was good and the restaurant was not crowded for a late Saturday afternoon lunch.
We love 1/2 price burger night on Tuesdays. The food is amazing. I am only giving then 4 stars because the usual prices are very expensive.
The food was good. The staff was friendly. It wasn't too busy but it took f o r e v e r for the lunch to arrive. Give yourself plenty of t I m e
We were there for a funeral gathering and the appetizers were very good. I enjoyed the back burner bakery which is adjacent -- a must! Many delicious desserts from local artisans!! The staff is very friendly.
Great place, highly recommend.
Best place in hockessin
I love this place!
Very very disapointed never ever agian
Burger night is great.
Pumpkin soup is there speciality. All the food we ate was delicious.
Lousy! Food was terrible, waitress snooty. Very displeased!

Grab a Back Burner to go Better Cheddar Burger........Nothing Better! Yummmmm!
Lovely local restaurant, great food.
Great food and service. Better cheddar for the win
The pumpkin mushroom soup is incredible! Beautiful atmosphere, we were seated by the fireplace and it was really cozy.
