While your food was amazing, your hours are interesting. The kitchen closes at 2:30, yet they say they don't open till 5:30. You will need to call to find out when in the world they're actually open.

A more perfect dining experience can hardly be had! The food is truly in a class of its own, however it is the owners who make the experience so special. How often do you go out to eat and end up getting served free (delectable) desserts and cocktails, while you chat with the restauranteurs? On our last visit, we were literally fed the most sumptuous strawberry cake and French 75s by the owners, while chatting about wine. The owners so clearly value their patrons and do everything in their power to make your experience at the West Street Grill unique and unforgettable!

Overall a very disappointing experience. I selected the West End Grill primarily because of the special St. Patrick's Day menu, and brought a date. It has a good reputation, though it is pricey for Litchfield. The staff was polite and welcoming, taking our coats to hang by the front of the restaurant. The meal started out in a promising fashion with complimentary hors d'ouevres--a garnished 1/2 hard boiled egg and a Brussels sprout--that were delicious. Her dinner--the chicken and mashed potatoes--off the regular menu, was excellent. However, my corned beef and cabbage was subpar. The corned beef was a very generous sized portion (actually it was huge), yet was dry and tasteless. The cabbage on the side (a surprisingly small portion) was more like a flavorless coleslaw and the accompanying carrots were drenched in butter. We decided to finish with a chocolaty dessert which was sadly uninspired and not worth the calories. Given that I ordered an overpriced bottle of wine and my check was quite expensive (for 2 people--$250), I expected more attention. Unfortunately, even though the Restaurent was relatively empty, our waiter was constantly being hurried by members of the staff to attend to other customers. He seemed like a nice young man trying his best; it certainly was not his fault that I had to pour the wine myself and my water glass was empty for more than 5 minutes. On my way out, the owners offered up the perfunctory "how was dinner?", but did not even get up from the table where they were eating to interact with us. When I politely shared my disappointment and some specifics, much to my surprise, one of them was defensive and rude. No apology, no offer to correct the problem ("You should have told us sooner, we can't do anything now"). He seemed offended, even angry, which was a unsetttling turn of events. Unsolicited, he lectured me about the cost of the corned beef, given the generous size of the portion. I could have pointed out the excessive markup on the wine, but chose to let it pass. The owner could have easily expressed some kind of regret and quickly rectified the situation. He could have offered something (a free appetizer or drink) in an effort to entice us to come back. Such responses are inexpensive, not hard to do and is just good for business. Almost always, it results in happy customers who return, spend more money, share the story of good service with others and recommend the restaurant to others. None of that happened. The West End Grille has been around for a while and the reviews have generally been quite good, though all say it is overpriced and I agree. Perhaps the owners had a bad day(too prideful?); certainly they were not interested in our feedback. I am sure they will have other customers, including many who will have very different experiences than the one we had. Just don't go on St. Patrick's Day for the corned beef and cabbage...and don't offer any constructive feedback.

Service was fabulous. Jillian was our server. She was extremely nice and knowledgable. James, one of the owners, was extremely nice. It was a pleasant experience. The food was outstanding. My family and I all ordered diver scallops. We all thought it was one of the best dishes we have ever had. If you're looking for great food and great service go to the West Street Grille. I highly recommend it to anyone. We will keep going back!

Alice E. Ridgway

Fabulous. James and Charles are the perfect hosts. The wine selection is tops and of course the garlic aoli bread is legendary. We've been going for 20 years and have never been disappointed.

West Street Grill has quickly become a regular spot for my wife and I. The setting is elegant yet approachable. The menu is a mix of traditional an eclectic items. All are fantastic! We are vegan and love the fact that we have such an elevated restaurant to add to our list of hot spots. The vegan "Crab Cakes" are truly delicious. Don't forget the chocolate cake also vegan.

after not going for four years (and torching them in this space), we went back for the bistro night and we were pleasantly surprised. the food was fresh as was the menu. there are still questions of value (no plans to go for regular dinner), but at the end of the day it was great to see they have put effort back into it.

The food was very good. The waiter was also nice, but it is expensive.

OUTSTANDING !!!!!

Amazing dining experience all around. The flavors and combinations of everything I tried were perfect as well as the size of the portions which matched well with the price. The experience I had was one of a kind, everyone working was helping each other the work felt much more family than an employee boss relationship. I also felt like a celebrity when they clean up your crumbs and constantly fixing the tablecloth. 100% positive feedback from me. I hope to treat myself to this rare experience again in the future. Well done James you've created an amazing business!

WONDERFUL DINNER AND FANTASTIC SERVICE

David Kemper

Dined here during a long weekend trip with friends and found the food to be both delicious and generously served. The staff and owner were extraordinary kind and welcoming, and the table parm bread was a particular treat.

Adam Germain

Not sure how this place is so highly rated at 4.5. I'd give it 3 stars at best because while nothing was bad, nothing was really good either... Everything except the prices was really just mediocre and not very interesting... Prices are high and portions are small which made it even more disappointing... Service was fine, but you could pay the same price for a meal down the road at Al Tavola and have a far better dining experience from food to service.

Janet Serra

I have dined at West Street Grill many times because the food is extraordinary. James and his staff are meticulous with every detail and with the freshest ingredients around. In the kitchen, each and every dish is executed with stellar culinary experience and delivered with perfection. Fresh ingredients are always used and fresh fish delivered daily. I love their Parmesan Aioli Bread, Pate, Cauliflower Tempura, and Soups. The owners at West Street Grill know what it takes to create a warm and attentive experience when you visit their restaurant. At West Street Grill, we anticipate your every need and have trained our staff to do the same with courteous and seamless attention to your experience. They offer an appreciative welcome to all guests, and assure perfect service. Always a pleasure to dine here any time of year!

We were in Litchfield on a Saturday, and just wanted a light dinner before the restaurant became really busy. The people were able to get us seated quickly, and accommodated our interest in lighter fare. The staff was very attentive, the presentation was wonderful and all our needs were met.....from a 14 year old to a 94 year old. Thank you for a delicious, relaxing meal.

Sue Ulintz Mosovich

Absolutely charming, with delicious food and warm, personal service. Each dish we tried was wonderful. My hangar steak was delicious. The beet salad with chevre was so flavorful. Our 9 year old son loved the cauliflower tempura so much that he wants me to recreate it. More than likely, I'll just insist we return!

very nice atmosphere and wait staff. had the fish and chips as a lot of people have raved and also recommended by the server. i thought it was very tasty...the batter seemed soft on the outside which i am not accustomed to with that dish. the flavor of the batter, the fish and the sauce was second to none. everything else was spot on so would try again

Thoroughly excellent food and service. First time I have ever eaten swordfish that was not dry but melted in the mouth. My wife's braised beef ribs were also a triumph. The servers were excellent and James O'Shea was a most superbly solicitous host, who produced a series of amuses-bouches as a surprise finale.

Just had a fabulous lunch... Fish and Chips... so delicious! We love West Street Grille.. everyone is always so friendly and work hard to make your experience truly unforgettable. This is our go to place for Lunch and Dinner:)

Kathryn Sansevero

This is a true hidden gem. The food was fresh and truly tasty! The heirloom basil salad was the best I'd ever tried! The two gentlemen that run the place are so sweet. I'll return again soon! Don't forget to give the cute dog on the patio a proper greeting if he's there!!

Darryl Pope

Good food but the owner is mentally ill. My friend asked the waiter if they could substitute another cheese for the goat cheese in her dish, which they did, but the owner came to our table and started insulting my friend telling her she's not a lover of cheese and going on and on. We will never go back.

Michael Bloom

Owner is impatient and seemed in a rush. Servers did not know that owner took our drink order. Food was good but overpriced. I was turned off by the $5 plate charge if you want to share and not get fat. Would not return.

Fern Berman

The food is excellent and the service is great. Professional and aware of their customers needs. I highly recommend West Street Grill.

Kasem O

Very good food... but waaaay too pricey. We had soup, salad, Pasta and a Steak... price was over $150. I loved the pasta. The sauce was a spot-on Roman style pasta sauce. Absolutely flawless. The steak was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfect. The soup - incredible... but a small portion. Here's the kicker, however.... Chef I forgot his name in the middle of nowhere charged us $150 for dinner. Chef Gordon Ramsay in London ... charged us £90 for dinner. Is there a discrepancy here? No complaints about the food, however priced very inappropriately.

My wife and I are frequent luncheon diners at WSG. All our experiences have been consistently excellent in terms of both cuisine and service. The ambiance is inviting and friendly, punctuated by beautiful floral displays. It is always a satisfying experience to dine here.

Great evening, with such a welcome! The food was memorable from start to finish...I hope to be back for more of that magical pauper bread!

Amazing meal on the Green. Great wine list. Munch of the menu is locally sourced. Great place to impress both lunch and dinner

Never got to even order food. The maître d' who himself smelled horribly, told me to remove my hat. I grew up in NYC and have traveled extensively. Food and travel is my passion. I've been to snob establishments before, but this one is just over the top. The hat in the restaurant etiquette died in the 30's. no need to attempt to teach your patrons snobbish habits. Not interested in my business? That's fine. I walked out to The village restaurant next door. They have fantastic food and service. My kids loved the next door restaurant too.

Teddy Epstein

We went to Washington, CT for the weekend and had a wonderful time at West Street Grill. All of our appetizers and entrees were done quite well. We were greeted by the owners, who later apologized about an minute wait to be served our main course. Their attention to detail was spot on and I would return in an instant the next we get up to Litchfield, CT.

On the costlier side, but overall it is good. You won’t be disappointed.

Small dining area. I am not sure how loud it would if all the table are busy. The atmosphere is lovely. The food can be pricey for some people. We just had deserts it's more expensive then other restaurants in the area. The quality of the food not very unique. The coffee was little bit too bitter. It's a winter day at the end of their day. May be it can be better during other times.

A most memorable meal and dining experience. Food and service were beyond excellent. Thank you!!

My husband and I come here from time to time and we've had almost all positive experiences. The food has always been so good and typically unique. It's always hard to pick what I want despite the menu being small! Usually the wait staff is friendly, but we did have a weird experience with the two gentlemen who didn't greet us when we came in and honestly seemed a bit cold while seating us. He almost seemed artifical... it was very strange as we've gone many times before to West Street and never had this kind of attitude from anyone before. We assumed maybe it was an off night for the guy so we were polite regardless. Also another thing worth mentioning is that they have a dog tied up to the outside and may come in every once in a while to lick your leg or look for food. He can only reach the front tables so if you dont like dogs sit in the back section of the restaurant. I love dogs and this didn't bother me, he was such a good dog and barely made a sound! Everyone seemed to know the dog as well as each other and every time we go into this restaurant someone will strike up a conversation with us. The atmosphere is a comfortable mix of casual and formal, romantic, classic and clean. It's an excellent place to dress up for and go on a date!

Henrietta Presley

Very good food. Service was good. I was meeting a cousin that I had not seen in several years and they let's us sit and talk for a while. That was nice of them.

David paolino

Couldn’t have had a nicer experience or dinner. Right from the beginning Brian our waiter was exceptionally personable and knowledgeable of the dishes and just genuinely a nice guy. The food was outstanding and couldn’t have been better. Glad we decided to stop here and will without a doubt return. West street was the perfect place for dinner after a great day. Had no problem pay a few $ more for a dinner with an entire experience that was worth a lot more. Thank you to the staff and especially Brian our waiter, great job.. thank you and see you again soon.. Jen and David

Fresh produces and delicious food! Many vegetarian options. The salmon was the best I ever had!

Mary Oshea

We absolutely loved our dinner at WSG. The whole experience from the food, the atmosphere, the service and attention to detail was delightful, professional and made for an unforgettable end to our holiday in Connecticut. I had the chicken and my husband had the short ribs and is still licking his lips! The sauces perfect, fresh and delicious. We shared the apple crisp and again it was better than we could possibly have imagined it. Go there!

Overpriced, disappointed with the food, glassware for the beer had water at the bottom before pouring, bathroom sink didn’t drain and had no soap. Chose this based on its ratings but unfortunately they belie the experience.

Again and again this is our very favorite restaurant in the entire state of Connecticut

We never miss dining here when we visit Litchfield. The ambiance, food and waitstaff are consistently all wonderful. Romantic, relaxing and top notch.

The only *consistently* outstanding restaurant we have found in Connecticut. Compares to the best of New York, except for lower prices and the easy, casual atmosphere. The tomato salad in the summer is the best on the planet. The soups, the cauliflower tempura, rib eye, roast chicken, and lobster rolls on winter holidays, even excellent local oysters year round .... The service is great, and the owner Jamie treats everyone who comes in the door as a valued patron.

Amazing Find, Definatly Coming back. I am from Michigan and stumbled upon this place out of chance. Have since returned and both times have been amazingly happy. Staff has always been amazing and attentive (not sure what the other reviews are talking about regarding negative reviews of the staff??). Both times the pasta (the gnnochi and raviloi) have been handmade and the best we have EVER had. Also, the carrot cake is to die for! Honestly the best restaurant in Connecticut I have been to to date! (lived here 3 years). And as for comments about the owners, both times they introduced themselves to me and were very kind and concerned that everything went well during out meal!

I enjoy fine restaurants in New York City, including such favorites as La Grenouille, Per Se, Le Bernardin, and Jean Georges. I also enjoy what I consider the fine restaurants in CT. I've been eating at West Street Grille for over 20 years. It's as fine a restaurant as I've ever enjoyed in Connecticut. The two thoughtful owners, Jamie and Charlie, are ever watchful and affable hosts, the long-time chef has developed remarkable finesse, the ingredients are of the highest quality, and the environment is warmly inviting. While I see the comments in Zagat praise it highly as the destination restaurant it is, I also see that the food is rated at 22. I've been a Zagat reviewer for New York City and Connecticut for many years, and I can tell you that whoever gave it a 22 out of 30 arrived either comatose or had an agenda other than forthright estimation. We might quibble about giving it a 27 or 28 or going all the way to 30. But a 22? An inexcusable insult to the consistent dedication and excellence of the owners and the attentive staff. Go and taste for yourself. Tonight, for appetizers we enjoyed a crab cocktail, which was made with a gently formed cake of pure, luscious, fresh crab meat and we had crisply elegant shrimp rolls; a main course of hard-shell lobster out of the shell, formed over thinly sliced leaks, with fresh chives and fresh rosemary in an ever-so-light butter sauce, and for dessert a homemade fruit pie with a freshly baked, air-light crust and finely diced apples with currants and raisins, along with a slender glass with fresh vanilla ice cream. We also had an exquisite red French Bordeaux at an inviting price. The sooner you go, the sooner you'll know where to eat consistently extraordinary food in Connecticut.

Just had a late lunch at West Street Grill with my mom and aunt. From the moment you walk in the restaurant it is very inviting and warm. Everything on the menu looked fabulous. The wine list was perfect and I loved the thin stem glasses. The owner James and manager came by a few times to see how we were enjoying ourselves. Our waitress was friendly and very knowledgable. Each of our meals was fantastic. Will definitely be back again! Superb!!

Our group enjoyed a most delicious and beautifully served multi-coursed meal on Saturday early evening. We all enjoyed small plates which is my favorite way to dine. From the diver scallop to the lobster and wonderfully fresh oysters it's hard to pick out a favorite dish. The short ribs were outstanding and the wines were perfect with the food. The service was charming and very knowledgeable. Every dessert was delicious ! An unforgettable meal!

beautiful romantic dinner...great wine.

The food is excellent and very fresh but it is expensive Lunch can easily be over $100.00 and dinner well over $ 200.00 but it is Litchfield and it is worth it if you can splurge a bit

Sydney Eddison

My husband and I fell in love with the West Street Grill in 1990, when one of the two owners, an eager young Irishman, plied us with a delicious and memorable cheese toast course that is still on the menu. Alas, I am now a widow but I still come here as a treat with friends, knowing that they will enjoy the warm, Irish welcome and excellent food as much as I do. Today, lunch was as good as ever, and I had the pleasure of introducing the restaurant to a new fan. His lobster sandwich was superb; I loved my grilled chicken, pear, and bacon salad in a lovely light citrus dressing; and the young woman, who served us with graceful efficiency, was charming. Thank you!

Christopher Gaffrey

Excellent. Due to my limited budget (I have a vow of poverty), I tend to avoid upscale restaurants, preferring to make my favorite dishes at home. However, at the invitation of your Twitter feed, which had replied to some of my food picture tweets, I decided to splurge on a lunch offering. The decor and setting is simply lovely, with relaxing music. The salmon burger I had was exquisite. The quality and preparation of the salmon, complimented by the kimchee and aioli, made flavor fireworks go off in my mouth. I would definitely return, but I'll have to save up to savor more of the excellence of your kitchen. Go raibh maith agaibh agus slainte!

Sophisticated elegance combined with outstanding cuisine marks West St Grille as a consistently superb dining experience. The owners personally greet and welcome each guest and visit with the comfort and warmth of family. Once, when I commented on the remarkable fresh bread, one of the owners insisted I bring one home as a special little gift. The fresh floral displays, soft lighting and lovely ambiance make every meal a culinary celebration!

We drove an hour in the rain just to experience West Street Grill (based on rave reviews from friends) and it was well worth it! The decor was warm and inviting, the staff perfectly attentive without being overwhelming, and the food was exquisite. We highly recommend the crab and mango gazpacho and the peasant bread is a must - no exceptions! While there are a number of entrees on the menu we wanted to try, we ended up having the braised short ribs and pan roasted chicken. The short ribs were exceptional – equally as good as the ones at Craft in NYC. The chicken was flavorful and moist, and the compote with the natural jus was perfection. Dessert? Where should I begin….keylime tart, bread pudding and crème brule were equally amazing – try them all! The website pictures show outdoor dining during the warmer months and looks just as inviting as the inside. Can’t wait to do a day trip in Litchfield and have a West Street Grill visit to top it off!

M A Kelly

My favorite restaurant! At lunchtime, the tomato salad is always my starter. The peasant bread with dinner is also top quality. I have eaten here many times and never been disappointed. The menu is great and the staff are attentive, knowledgeable and always have smiles on their faces. The wine menu is also good quality with lots of choice. Try it for lunchtime and again for dinner. The well thought out menu differs enough for both sittings that you will impressed all over again on your second visit.

Very nice! Lovely atmosphere and excellent service and friendly people, along with delicious lunch !

Cramped snob hole with decent food and extremely high prices. Owner is histrionic, impatient, and rude. It amazes me that people would be willing to allow their hard-earned money to go to such an awful human being. If you want hostile, arrogant treatment, go there. If you value decency and respect, go elsewhere.

Travelista Tina

Us “Leafers” were treated as equal royalty as the Locals! Perhaps in part because we showed up early enough Saturday evening before all the rush. Although we were already mumbling to each other waiting in line for the maître d’ saying that we’d promise that we will be in and out in an hour. When we approached his stand he was ever so gracious and without any adieu looked up at us and smiled and asked for us to be seated in the Paris room. To which my husband cheerfully replied oh my wife loves Paris. Our waitress escorted us and cautioned us of the one stair up and to our delight we were greeted by bistro chairs and a wall full of floor to ceiling murals ... and my favorite part a corner booth! Our second waitress whose first night on the job was ever so kind in serving us and certainly made sure at all times we had a glass full of cold water. Which since we weren’t drinking due to a long drive back was the perfect service for us. There were several items on the menu that were very appealing to us and we were pleased with what we ordered. The highlight was how piping hot our food was served. You really can’t go wrong with your choice and the portions were well sized and very flavorful. Just to let you know Joe had pumpkin spice soup which was unlike anything else he ever had and I had a cauliflower tempura with a sweet and sour sauce which was unlike anything I’ve ever had. All this to say how creatively talented their chef is. Entrées I had the paparadelle with shiitake mushrooms in the most savory sauce and Joe had shrimp scampi when linguine which was also in a savory sauce. Rewinding a bit... we were initially served with a hard crusted Italian-like bread and the most flavorful oil to which we were also pleased that the table had the Peppermill and salt —which to us — that’s a telltale sign of an excellent restaurant that we don’t have to chase down the waiter or waitress to give us some pepper!! Between services we chatted with an Irishman about which inns to stay for an overnight who we later reconnected with after dinner outside and uncovered he is the co-owner and we then also found find out that the maître d’ is the other owner. Both Manhattan-ites in Litchfield! As we walk through the dining room we were just marveling at how bustling and comfy and upbeat all of the patrons were and how cute the bar niche area is so much so that we are definitely coming back probably in festive wintertime for an overnight stay nearby. We got lucky with our experience because we weren’t turned away because we didn’t have a reservation so we caution you to make sure you have a reservation. At least for this time of season

The wife and I went for the first time last night... in a word "Fabulous"!!! Food was fantastic, hospitality was remarkable, and the wine oh so refreshing! Highly recommend to EVERYONE!!!!!

Elise D

This is a very cute establishment - I liked the decor and the staff was very welcoming and nice. However, we are at the restaurant to eat and that was where we had some issues. The menu is pretty limited and honestly, we thought overpriced for what you received. In my case I ordered a Caesar salad ($14) and what came out was some lettuce with three slivers of parmesan cheese and a few croutons. I might have paid $3 for this as a side salad at another restaurant so I was disappointed. My boyfriend however had the shrimp bisque and said that it was fantastic. I think that the price point was just too high for what I felt we received so we would not return. It would help if they would bring rolls out with your food or something if the portions are going to be on the small side.

Mario Brunetta

Service was outstanding; the food was first rate. The poached lobster was exceptional and the organic heirloom tomatoes could not have been fresher! The owner was at our tableside to greet us with exceptional attention to detail and our requests. Everything I orderd was "custom" and all of my needs were honored without a moment's hesitation. When there the restaurant was filled to capacity. A "must visit" venue whether for lunch or dinner.

Mary Jean Koster

Our group of 8 had a memorable meal last night. The food was delicious and beautifully served. We shared a variety of dishes ranging from deliciously fresh oysters with a port wine mignonette sauce to sautéed lobster with leeks. The ceviche was wonderful as was the diver scallop. My favorite was the fork tender short rib with fruit salsa. Wines were fabulous and service was impeccable. I look forward to going back very soon!!!! Bravo, WSG!
