REVIEWS OF The Red Onion IN Colorado

Andrew Smith

Good food and reasonable prices for Aspen’s scale. The waiter must not have been having a great day and came off a little rude.

Michael Hansen

Had a great experience with this restaurant. The atmosphere, architecture, and history are all classic Aspen and a must stop for anyone visiting the city. The food and staff were great as well. I actually found it to be one of the more affordable restaurants in the area. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Hope to come back in the future.

Wanda Marshall

Good food

Leigh Morrison

Great bar. Great food without breaking the bank

Albert Dostal

Good food. Reasonable price for Aspen.

Michael Ryan

Great atmosphere. Good choice of brews. The Red Onion Burger was a two thumbs up.

This bustling restaurant drew me for 2 reasons. A) the history that it was the original restaurant in its same location since the village grew around it and B) because there is/was a great restaurant in Vancouver that was modeled after this one and I worked there for yrs during Uni! A great history lesson, and bits of Americana nestled into the main street of Aspen. I would definitely recommend people check this place out. Stay for a drink or feed the entire crew, not if you're on shoestring budget tho!

James Reil

Recommend the side salad and French fries. Cute and cozy place. Onion soup and cheese steak were okay but nothing special.

Couldn't have been happier for our lunch stop! Food, service or the environment couldn't have been better... Was told it was the best burger around... I was NOT disappointed. It was delicious!! And our waiter was excellent. Definitely check them out!!

The manager is/was an absolute joke. Because we didn't appear to have money, we were treated like kids in a school lunchroom. I've been meaning to write this review for a few years (yes, this incident happened 2 years ago, and I'm just finding the time to write this). The server dumped dressing right on my friends very expensive ski coat and the manager just stood there and watched. Didn't say a word while the poor server cleaned the dressing off of the floor. The manager then glared at us while we finished a pitcher of beer, giggling under his breath to servers while looking our way. We were great customers, not causing any kind of problems, quietly drinking our beers. Our only problem is that we looked like we were ski bums. They wanted us out of there as quickly as possible to make room for the next big pocketbook.

Good food at a reasonable price for Aspen. Excellent waiter. Would eat there again. Macadamian nut bread pudding is delicious and I usually do not like bread pudding.

Fabien Hubert

We had beers there not so long ago. Their selection of draft beers is reasonable and the prices ok (they even have an happy hour). The service was ok, not great though. One male employee was really nice and helpful but the lady who greeted us was not the best at communicating and borderline distant/rude. Also, we didn't appreciate the fact that we couldn't get a table because apparently it was booked for a bigger group (we were 2) even though 5 minutes later a couple got it (2 other people). But I'm sure there was a reasonable explanation to that.

LOVE the live jazz on Wednesday nights! This guy was amazing!

Lizette Zambrano

Came to this restaurant because it has lovely outside seating. We sat down and someone brought us water. Our server then came by and took our order. He wasn't prepared at all. His own didn't work and he tried to memorize our order. We asked for it to-go because it had started to rain and we couldn't go inside since we had our dog. Didn't seem too busy, but our food took forever to arrive. When it finally was brought out to use we paid and left. We decide to just eat it real quick in my car because my boyfriend didnt want his burger to get soggy. He had orders it medium rare but this buger was more than well done. I ordered a salad with no dressing and no cheese because I'm lactose intolerant but of course my salad had tons of bleu cheese and dressing. To make matters worse, no napkins or silverware. Would only recommend this place if they were really slow for the possibility of getting the food correct. Wish I remembered my servers name, just remember he has light colored eyes and seemed Hispanic. The food did not taste very good either.

Elizabeth Frisbie

This place was absolutely tasty! Great drinks and great food!

Betsy Shuey

Great ambiance... cute... friendly staff... good food..i had tge French dip which was amazing... and the fries were very good! Tenth mountain division strong!!!

Brian Mckeone

Locals hang out here not so high fullutant. Live music and friendly staff.

Scott Lindenthaler

All of entrees and desserts were outstanding. Menu had good variety.

Rachel Hall

I read reviews prior to going. This place is really cool, and has tons of history. Fries are the good kind of crispy, and the food was good. Servers were awesome, and the manager was energetic and light hearted.

Carlo Gonzo

Unfortunate experience. We walked into the restaurant and were greeted and seated just fine. Then ordered our food with just a few minutes. Here’s where it went wrong..... other parties started to be seated around us then about 20-30 mins went by and we still haven’t gotten our food. We figured they just must be backed up, and just continued chatting away. Then 45 minutes went by where we then noticed everyone else around us has already gotten their food who were seated 10-15 mins AFTER us. I then had to get up and chase down the server. The service apologized and checked-in with the kitchen. Apparently our order was never placed. The service apologized once again and offered us drinks..... 1hr to 1:15hrs later the food finally arrived. We ate in a HUGE rush bc we had to leave. Got our check and no discount was offered and we were charged for the drinks which were initially offered for the mistake. Good food. The service was simple not to par on that day.

Ayon Sarkar

Average on food. A bit costly, but overall good.

Thomas Lutz

Great comfort food at value. This is where your lifties come to eat.

Lucio moro

Excelent place to have dinner with friends

Marlohe Muse

Fun spot. We went there after a concert at Belly Up.

Candela Tealdy

Best bar in Aspen! Great service, food and drinks

Liberty Wills

My husband and I stopped in the red onion while in aspen for our wedding. We weren’t expecting the food to be as amazing as it truly was. I strongly recommend making this a stop while in aspen.

Victoria Turner

Fantastic vibe and awesome burger.

Wandern Leo

Aside from being a historic place with a great and wild history (you can still see a bullet hole in the bar from the days of the old West) the Red Onion also serves great food. And their selection of Beers and Wines ain’t bad either.

Deb Conn

High quality food for reasonable prices. Good menu selection. Black bean burger and pulled pork were exceptional. Also liked the house wine and the fact they carry only Colorado beers. Oh, and the service was extremely friendly. Have been here before and experience is consistent. Thanks guys!

Damien Kelso

Good burgers and beer, nice spot.

Chuck Glass

It's a good bar with an excellent selection of fine food

Ben Davis

Good place to eat that is still humble in aspen

Michael Curtis

Its history with food, drink , and atmosphere ...

Kim Smed

Find spot for a drink. Nothing spectacular but also nothing wrong. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Jesus Vazquez

Excellent food, historic building and all the vibe you expect from Aspen. Great Bar for an apres ski drink. Make sure you read the full history of the place on the back of the menu. Even though the place was packed on the beginning of spring break the food came out very fast and it was delicious.

Amanda Lopez

Very friendly and amazing bar

annette roeyer

This bar and grill has been in operation in Aspen forever! Good food. A must do.

Susan O'Loughlin

Awesome place for food and drinks

Silvia Del Corral

Interesting place to know if you are in Aspen. It's an historic place.... very peculiar. 100% recommended.

Dru Delaforet

This place was recommended by a friend. We had an awesome experience! The lamb t-bones are fantastic. Don’t sleep on the chicken with spaetzle either. Had a great bartender that made the night even better. Recommended some great whiskey from their incredible selection for an old fashioned. Would definitely recommend. Whenever we come back to Aspen we will be back.

Melissa Mais

Rating on service and drinks. Great service yesterday and today. Great happy hour (3-6). Highly recommend!!

Nora Carlson

It's not often a restaurant asks you how you would like your meat cooked anymore . Best burger I've had in a long time. Quality Meat quality ingredients.

Gareth Williams

Excellent historic renovation. Mike is the best waiter in Aspen.

Braam Snyman

Absolute 5-star experience! The server was great and the vibe in the restaurant was fantastic! Food was well priced and portions were decent to big. Good selection of beer and wine. I would definitely return to the Red Onion!

Andrew Schneider

Cool spot. Great service. Excellent bourbon selection.

Mike Allen

Great service chill atmosphere.

brian bird

Beautiful, old bar. Great French onion soup.

Mauro Rozo Mantilla

The Red Onion is a historical landmark in Aspen culinary services. Prices are low (for being in such area) and food is good. The burger is very nice and the side salad is bigger than other places. The bartenders know their stuff (even if is a casual place, they were able to make a special cocktail I like to drink and is not that popular in US). If you reach the dessert, Igor, the Serbian server, recommended me the apple tart, which is very good (btw Igor is an amazing guy) Fun fact: I was told this place is the second seller of Coors Light in USA, someone that is interesting if u see the size of he place that's not that big. Anyways, is a great place to visit. Of course I'll come back.

Christopher Morrow

Great place to hang after skiing and get good food.

Justin Hanna

Fun place. Stay away from the gold diggers

James C. Johnson

Very good food, and ambiance. Will visit again.

vincent galan

Awesome bar for locals apres-ski. The chili is awesome. Fun place to be and have drinks. It gets packed, so arrive before 4 pm.

Tom Martin

Delicious Salmon. Great chicken quesadilla. Good burger.

Zack Gutilla

Cool place, food is solid. coors banquet on tap 3 bucks...of course this is Aspen so you might have to get over yourself to enjoy the golden smoothness of a banquet.

Zeynep Kartal

Ended up going there twice during my visit because I liked the black bean burger so much. This vegetarian burger with guacamole is so good. The first time I got it with sweet potato fries which were okay and the second time I got it with the salad. However, I had forgotten to ask whether the salad was vegetarian, I just foolishly assumed a salad would be vegetarian but it ended up coming with bacon bits in it. It was my fault for not checking before ordering but still our waitress was nice enough to offer to bring me something else and then not charge us for the salad in the bill. Both times we were there we received friendly service.

Dan Aviv

Great selection for such a concise menu!

Andrew Andreae

The oldest bar in Aspen, and a classic you should try on a casual night. Has a large bourbon menu with some of the hard to find bourbons (all the pappy's, weller, and many many more). I especially enjoyed a bourbon flights. It gets crowded, so recommend getting there slightly before you would normally eat. We didn't have to wait to get a table at 6pm, but by 6:30 there was a wait. Great casual dinner, highly recommend.

Anna Whitehouse

Great lunch spot. The mac-n-cheese was awesome.

James Slattery

Great food place in Aspen

geeperformance

Great staff, service was solid!

Jill Ripple

The staff were very friendly, however the food is bland I wouldn’t waste your money. I’m pretty sure they used canned chicken for the Mac and cheese.

Adam Rapp

Went here for dinner and drinks. I wish this wasnt on my last night in town, as three dishes caught my fancy: the duck, the lamb, and the steak. I went with the duck for the grits and blackberry sauce. The duck breast was perfectly cooked, the sauce was balanced in sweet and bitterness of the berries, and the cheesey grits were top notch. I had a whiskey cocktail which was great and some banana cream pie for dessert which had one of the best crusts I've enjoyed in a while. The service was good as well!

Lexy Adkins

The food was great but the service was not the best. We had to ask for things a few times, the veggie of the day came out as something different than we were told, server wasn't really knowledgeable about menu. We were coming off a 4-day backpacking trip and overall it hit the spot in the delicious post-wilderness burger and beer arena. I'd return.

Yoram Pomer

This place has a good vibe. During our visit there was live music and it was real fun. As for food - it's nothing special, so don't expect too much and you want be disappointed

Augie Kunkel

An amazing selection of whiskeys and bourbons at great prices

Andrea Haisch

We had the best service and most attentive waiter when we visited. Apparently, this is one of Aspens classic and legendary joints. I’m happy we stopped by for a drink after skiing!

Mike Adams

Good food, great selection of liquor and beer. Cool historic setting.

Carolina Havandjian

Great bar to drink, Monday has open mic ! Sooo fun!

Sean Lynch

Best food in aspen. And that's saying alot.

Jerry Bridgman

This was a really cool place to drink! We went here a couple times while we were in Aspen. It's a busy place given the location, but be patient. It's walking distance to most hotels in that area. Once you have a few drinks you can walk around and barhop some or do some shopping. The Aspen village area is a fun place.

Josh Magda

Classic must stop at when in Aspen. If you dont you can't say you visited Aspen, and youre just another clueless tourist

Dimi Angelov

Do not expect a lot from the food, but the location, outside seatings and service are nice.

Jennifer Spero

Okay food. Fun atmosphere and historic

Al Rodriguez

Buffalo Burger was amazing!! Drinks were also great..

Kian O’ Neo

Really good food and nice atmosphere. My only criticism is that they were a bit under staffed, and my salad was not a seaweed salad, but I don't complain because it was great anyways

Jim O

Passing though Aspen on a road trip, the Red Onion was recommended by a local gentleman who operated another store. It was a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch during the "off" season. Mainstays are sandwiches with unique flavors. Today's vegetable of the day was; of all things, brussel sprouts. They were perfect! A Buffalo Burger is also on the menu. Quite good as well. If you're looking for a local's hangout, this might be the place!

Spartan Ventures

This is the most dependable dinner spot in Aspen. Service is always fast, food is delicious and plenty of seating inside and nice outdoor area in the middle of the pedestrian Mall. The menu has elk pasta, duck and stuffed chicken with pistachio. Salads are large and well prepared. Awesome bar as well.

Steel Wyrm

The food was okay. I had the chicken Red Onion tacos, which were well seasoned but the meat was dry, and for a 22 dollar plate with tax and tip the portions were tiny. These are more like half sized tacos at best. I hoped to recover with a promised peach cobbler, but instead was served an underwhelming mixed berry. The waiter apologised at his mistake but made no offer to fix, comp, or replace the plate. Doubt I will eat there again.

Mandy Kirby

I am in love with historical places so, this was an obvious choice. The food was great and the ambiance was nostalgic. Unfortunately, the service was really bad. I dont k ow if they were short handed but, we seldom saw our waiter and he certainly could not be found when we needed him

Patty Barrientos

Delicious!!!, good food, good service! Totally recommend ✨

Dave s

Casual atmosphere and lively bar scene. The dining room in the back area was a little cramped but otherwise great. The food is standard American cuisine with a quite a few specialty entrees. For me, the Buffalo burger was excellent, and the Mac and cheese appetizer was a hit! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a casual dining experience in the area.

Michele McGlone

Had a nice lunch, good service, nice ambience, low key

Adam _

Where the beer flows like wine - dumb and dumber. Easily the best bison burger I've ever had.

Sacredheart 21

Love their food

Gabi Zago

Great food!!!!! Another thing is that we didn't have to wait very long !

Olivier Manhattan

American pub with this old good times atmosphere typical of classic places in ski stations. Ski passes from the seventies to nowdays are exposed behind the glass of the tables, some pictures are so... seventies. The onion rings were surprisingly the best I had in a while. Friendly service.

Heidi Cross

Overrated. Since it is an icon of Aspen, you must go, but maybe for a beer instead of a meal. The choice of food we decided on was disappointing.

Chuck Losch

Evan was a great server. I’m giving it 3 stars due to my Red Onion burger being nothing to brag about. I’ve had tastier burgers at Five Guys. The fries I got were good. My wife’s pulled pork sandwich was much better than my burger. She got a salad as a side which was delicious.

Abby D

Really good food, and really good service!

Sangmo Tony Sohn

Food was nice and price was reasonable, but I was disappointed that they wouldn't allow having separate checks, or splitting the check unevenly. Everyone in our party of 20 had to pay the same amount, which was unfair for many of us.

Jim Brunner

Good food and service with a local vibe.

Jorge Peral

I went to aspen a few weeks ago and went to a few restaurants there. The Red Onion was among the few I visited with my family. It was one of my favorites that I went to due to the uniqueness of the place. The inside is very appealing and the staff is extremely nice and give an amazing service. This place is great for a family visit or to go to with friends (it has a bar too). The food is very good but nothing out of the ordinary. The menu isn't that varied either, but its still good. My only real problem with this place is some of the prices. They serve tacos here amongst many other things; the problem is that its like 6.50 per taco. The tacos are very small so I do not believe they should be worth that much. Besides this, its a great place that I would be happy to visit again if I ever return to Aspen.

Scott Reed

Casy was awesome really knows his whiskey and by the way what is pictured was delicious.

Linda Chandler

This restaurant is supposedly dog friendly. We have been there before without a problem. But, today, we were told that only “Service Dogs” could be there and we had to leave. FYI

Jakub Antos

The Angus burger that I ate was honestly, better than I thought it would have been. Not a bad place to eat a burger in.

Dinorah Ramon

Although the locals are rude, JUDGMENTAL individuals, towards Hispanics, as my husband and I are brown eyed, black haired, AMERICANS. Talk about making tourists of different ethnicities feel very uncomfortable.. Nevertheless, the food was delicious. Wait staff were courteous. Even though we were very uncomfortable, the food was tasty!

Georgie Bever

Great food. Great outdoor seating area in the shade. Unobtrusive staff.

Abby Ellsworth

This is a fun place with a good selection on the menu.

Tom Patierno

Cheap pitchers are the main attraction for the working Aspenite, although I imagine their other offerings are equally good. Located right on the mall, next to just about everything in town. Fun place with live music

Tripp Baltz

Good burgers, cool vibe

Liam O'Keefe

Excellent food, although the portion sizes could definitely be bigger. For $12, you get what would appear to be a children’s chicken quesadilla when it is not advertised as such. The chili was amazing but again was very small portion even in the bowl size as opposed to a cup.

Noah White

Nice food, friendly environment

Barb Wadey

Great atmosphere and great food!

Charlotte C.

This is a casual, basic American pub right in the middle of the mall. It's fairly noisy, as most pubs are in Aspen on a Saturday night. There is sometimes a wait to get a table but it's not bad, and definitely worth waiting. It has a nice ambience and has been part of this city for many decades.

Natalie McBride

Really good reasonably priced burgers.

Fock Guugle

Great bison burger and cheese fries

Andrea Allies

Good food. Great atmosphere. They were extremely slow with the check.

Howard Ammons

Hannah took care of us from start to finish. Had a great drink, meal, and dessert. Thank you!

Subramani Santhi

Great ambiance for late night hangouts

Adam Szabelak

Nice place nice service but food not worth the price

Wendi Gibbs

This was a classic bar with a local vibe.

CHANDRAKANT KULKARNI

Great value of food and drinks at economical cost. Ex cellent

Marc Goemans

Good food, decent price, nice waiter.

G. Kunkel

If you come to Aspen you have to eat at the red onion at least once and have a beer. Ask to see the historic bullet holes.

Yesaira Michelle

We were visiting Aspen and ended up here for a dinner on one of the nights we spent there. Of course I went with this location for its great reviews. Menu is very small little to no options on food. American cuisine menu options. Prices are your typical Aspen prices and the quality of the food was not good. Aside for the history I read online the food is noting special.

Paul Higginbottom

Best cheese steak I've ever had. Wonderful place, over 100 years old

Nick Mahoney

Good burger and fries, reasonable prices for Aspen

Cherise Smith

Good food, drinks & service. We really enjoyed our relaxed dinner here.

Joseph Herrity

Love this spot. I've hit this up every time I've been in Aspen for work. A true bar not trying to be anything it's not in a city that's often trying to be something more than it is. I like the club sandwich.

Jenn Gibbons

Historical brick buildng holds the Best Bar in town with Live Music. Aspen Mountain view. Signature locals hangout.

Tim

Stopped by for lunch. We had the hamburger and the chicken sandwich; both absolutely superb. Also recommend the house salad side. Very beautiful and historic room. If in Aspen, eat here first.

Lianna Rose

Cozy, usually crowded. Lots of history and fairly priced food. Original bar from the 1800s. Must stop in if only for a $3 Coors draft. Family friendly.

Alex Forsythe

Best bar in Aspen.

Lori W.

Had the Philly. Pretty good. Little pricey, but it's Aspen. Friendly staff.

LJ Silas

Great local spot with an awesome and friendly staff. Not to mention the food was great and at a fair price. Loved the atmosphere and music that filled the room. Definitely a spot worth a repeat visit.

Christopher Jacobsen

Good pub food with friendly and fast service. Many options on the menu.

Connor Kaufmann

Make no mistake, this is a pub. Expect a loud-ish public space. Totally fine for kids though, not a bad place to bring your cranky brat who's tired of ski school. Ask for the kids menu if they don't give you one. Still some nice items on the menu despite the pub atmosphere. The lamb and the "kobe" steak are both excellent. Try the spicy fries with cheese dip. Overall this place is a good alternative to the typical bougie Aspen flair.

Angela Ho

Food was fine. Service, a little suspect. Actually quite suspect with regards to our server named Troy. Basically we order our food (given, my husband had a steak which would take some time) and 30 minutes pass, which is about average for a steak, but our appetizer hadn't even come out. We look around and see those who had come and been seated later than us had received their entrees. So we politely asked when our food was going to be out and we mention the fact that other parties had already been served (keep in mind the house was far from packed). The response? Troy asks my husband if he wants a raw steak if he can't wait. Never have I ever had such a rude response from a waiter; even at some of the smallest establishments I've been to. What's more? After the food had come out, I apologized to the waiter for being so blunt and told Troy that he still shouldn't treat his customers the way he did. He said he understood that we were hungry and didn't even apologize for his attitude. Finally when the check came out, thinking he wasn't going to get a tip, Troy included his tip on my bill. How petty did he think we had to be to do such a thing? On top of that? He returns with the check asking for further tip as if we hadn't noticed what he had done. I have a picture of the original receipt as well. The food is fine though if you're looking to grab a bite, but the service might either be hit or miss or that's how waiters are trained at this establishment.

Stuart Amos

Good service great food and drink. Above expectations

Colleen Piel

Wonderful food, great service, casual atmosphere

Mark Borden

Low quality, high price. Typical Aspen.

Kerry Feuerhelm

Good service, good prices and selection on beers.

Austin King

Great food and drinks for reasonable prices. Elk bolognese, Mahi Mahi on tortillas and the bison burger are recommended. Friendly and helpful service staff.

Travis Durand

Old town Aspen. I have been going here for more than 50 years. Limited menu but ample choices. Great classic bar up front.

Miriam Hinojosa

Great food and service

Doug Schutt
