REVIEWS OF Sweet Basil IN Colorado

Janet Taylor

We went in for a light lunch. The appetizer lobster lemongrass potstickers sounded amazing, so we ordered it to share and also ordered the chicken lettuce wraps to share. We really wanted the potstickers to be good, but we were so disappointed. Only four potstickers came in the order for $18. It would have been fine if they were amazing, but they were soggy and hardly had any flavor. We were given spoons for the lemongrass broth that the potstickers sat in. The broth tasted like salt water. Could not even taste lemongrass or lobster in the dish. The chicken lettuce wraps were pretty good though. The waiter was very personable and friendly. Just wish the food was better, especially for the prices they charge.

Absolutely wonderful! Was a recommendation from a local family member, and we will continue on passing the recommendation. Had a wonderful selection of wines, and both my meal and my boyfriend's was perfectly cooked and presented. So happy that we stopped here. One server was also wonderful, and helped us pick the perfect dishes for our tastes. Worth every penny!!

Mike R

We had really been looking forward to our visit, but sadly it was just okay. For all of the hype, I expected more. The food was average and kind of generic. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. I had the lamb dish, and the sauce was very heavy handed and over cooked, almost burnt tasting. Service also wasn’t what I was expecting. Again, not bad, but also not great - somewhat slow and aloof. At this price point, the execution needs to be better.

Jessvin Thomas

Food and service were fantastic. Wine selection even by the glass was great. Will come back for sure.

Mark Napartovich

Good is just awesome! Even it's pricey it's real Experience.

Niccolo Spataro

One of Vail's top restaurants ...and always with great service

Excellent restaurant. Went there for lunch and had the best ever ceaser salad, grilled salmon, wine and dessert. Delicious flavors, fresh ingredients, excellent quality and cannot wait to go back! Highly recommended.

Top of the line yet okay for kids. We had duck, pork chops and salmon, all were fantastic. A+ discreet service, just go there and enjoy. Thank you Sweet Basil. If we come back we'll be back.

best café un Vail..the beet salad is amazing

J B

One of the best culinary experiences we've ever had. I'm not sure if it's the high altitude or the exceptional ingredients, but we have dinner here every winter we ski in Vail and it's always a great experience.

Trevor Norton

Phenomenal service, food, and drink. Would highly recommend Sweet Basil to anyone visiting or traveling through Vail. Compliments to the chef!

JORGE SEPULVEDA

Had cone few times before. The taste was bad and the service also bad, like they had some kind of hurry.

Kyle M

There is a reason this establishment has been here for so long, and once you taste your meal you can understand why!! The staff was very helpful to make sure my food allergies were taken care of and the presentation is something like out of the food shows. It is quite possibly the best meal I have ever had. Make sure to try the Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake, it is amazing and if asked, they will give you the recipe.

Jennifer W.

Delicious food, gorgeous patio with tables outside next to this rushing river! Surrounded by mountains and beautiful buildings! It is a little tricky to find but well worth it! Service was impeccable and they were very accommodating. Definite must!

Armistead Browning

Prices have increased quite a bit in last few years. Service very good. One Salmon dish had to be sent back to redo 3 times. Basically quality of the food was the typically high quality.

Felix Cheng

A worthwhile dining experience in downtown Vail. The fries are extremely crispy and seasoning is exquisite.

Gustavo Copia

We came last year in the summer and the food was great. We are here now again and we are very disappointed. The server let us know they just changed the menu two weeks ago. We ordered the following appetizers: Cesar Salad: 2 points in presentation/ 2 points in taste. Don’t understand what they are trying to accomplish with this dish.!!! Tuna Ceviche: served over a coconut sauce. 8 points in presentation but 4 points in taste and flavor. Tuna Sushi with coconut sauce flavor is NOT a good combination. Coconut sauce kills the taste of the tuna completely.!!! We ordered the following main dishes: Duck: 7 points in presentation / 7 points in taste. I would say this was the best dish we tried tonight. Salmón: 2 points in presentation / 5 points in taste. It looks like a salad with a carnaval of colors. We expected a much better dish for $32.!!! Since they have a new menu, I would need to hear more reviews from friends before coming back. We are very disappointed.!!!

Noa Rodriguez

Service 5 star food 5 stars it's what you expect from Vail, I visited a few days before the busy time of the year early december

Russ Morgan

Great meal and service. Corn chowder is a must, also perfect scratch margarita. Everyone enjoyed their mains. I had lamb rib chops, toasted quinoa added a nice texture. Solid wine list, we had an excellent bottle by Smockshop Band (odd name, they make incredible wines).

Kathy Crowe

Very good. Great atmosphere. Pulled chicken salad and green pea hummus was delicious.

Julie Morse

My husband and I agreed that we had the best burger of all time at Sweet Basil.

Charles Hacker

Like the new fall menu. Service was good; prices were reasonable for Vail. Food was creatively prepared.

Nathaniel Moore

Wow, awesome, that's all I can say. Had a great business dinner here last week. Very attentive waitstaff even though we did not have a reservation. I would definitely recommend sweet basil and will come back.

The Manitou Strings

One of the best in Vail; long time favorite...bit pricey but hey it's Vail!

Christina Allen

This was by far the best dinner we had in Vail. Great service and great food. We couldn't get a reservation so we sat at the bar which turned out to be a great experience! Highly recommend.

Will Pettet

Incredible food. Great atmosphere. We entertain a client and had a great time.

Bob Yu

We had a good experience here - the food and service were both good. The portions are a bit smaller than what you’d expect from similar fine dining restaurants, but we still left full.

Josh Evans

Amazing meal! Appetizer, main course, desert, cocktails and wine all delicious.

Clinton Kurtz

Great food at a fair price and great service. Nice atmosphere and setting. Great place for a date while watching the snow fall.

Christopher Harper

We had a very unique experience this evening at Sweet Basil one with a twist ending. Our evening started out with us waiting 45 minutes with no appetizers or any explanation as to what happened to our orders. When the couple next to us, who were seated 15 minutes after us, not only got their appetizers but also their meals...I was livid. We had come here to celebrate my wife's birthday and this was a horrible start to a place with such high expectation. Within minutes of demanding something be done or we were just going to leave, a manager promptly came to our rescue. He was very polite and explained that our ticket had in some way been misplaced and if we would allow him, he assured our evening would be nothing short of spectacular. My wife and I enjoy lavish fine cuisine the world over and the food here was of the highest quality. Her and I laughed and enjoyed each others company as the night went on with red carpet treatment. We were waited on with the utmost importance throughout the night and the manager had turned what was inevitably a 1 star experience into one of the best amost memorable experiences I could have ever wanted for my wife's birthday. To cap things off, the manager insisted that we pay nothing since we were willing to give them a second chance and for the initial inconvenience. Well done Sweet Basil...you won over a life long customer.

Geoffrey Fichte

Food is good but they are not child friendly.

Doug Cha

Good but expensive . Nice wine list . Good service. Liked the brussel sprouts alot.

Chris Simon

There are really very few restaurants in the world (and most of them are in Italy) that serve food with the flavor details you find here. The mignionette with the oysters is unique, the Snake River Wagyu Ribeye Filet, wow, and oddly the cauliflower that is served with the Grouper was a taste bud explosion. Go or regret it.

Mia Hedrick

Great tasting food! Attentive servers . Nice location

Travis Jarvi

Great food. Great service. Terrible price. We had a party of 12 people and the cost was $8,000+. We didn't go over our wine limit. We didn't eat more than our food allotment. They said 30 people is the same as 12 people. Integrity is lacking in this place. "Large" parties at your own risk...be careful of the "contract." @Sam Ferraro.

Shannon ss

Absolutely impeccable service, beautiful presentation with unique twists on their dishes. Craig is the best at service. We were with a very large group (40+) and food came out perfectly prepared. Whether this is for a special event or a group, it is a must!

Sandra Slavens

Great as always

Wow. That was great. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner with great company and a relaxing atmosphere. The food was truly awesome. If you enjoy great food, go no further.

We had lunch here in the winter season. The two courses were excellent: cauliflower soup, a beet risotto and oxtail papardelle. Nice ambience too. Thoroughly recommended.

Always amazing. New ownership, but appears to be maintaining tradition. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was a little different, but no less stunning.

Craig Malott

What a fantastic spot. From start to finish Sweet Basil aims to impress and doesn't fail in their accuracy. Absolutely do not miss the beef tartare. Evey entree I've had carries a unique palette offering, which is terrific for return value. The port flights are expertly crafted for after dinner. This has officially become my spot to get out of town and enjoy a night in the mountains that is certain not to disappoint. Where's my sixth star? ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Alyssa Marie Tajonera

Very good food and service. Just the perfect place to celebrate a birthday. The patio looking out the river is a bonus.

Kreighton Bieger

In more than a decade of visits to Sweet Basil, I feel like it's slipping. The food is sturdy, reliably good, but not outstanding or particularly interesting. The quality of the service and the details of the dishes, all seem to show some age. Still worth a stop as a sturdy Vail stalwart, but there are more interesting restaurants in town.

Isa Ramos Cano

Best salmon i’ve ever had!!!!!! ♥️

Laura Kelley

Incredible steak and service along with some fantastic wine. It was nice to sit out on the patio on the perfect fall evening looking out at the village. Highly recommend.

Andrew Andreae

Have been here 10+ times. Look forward to it every year. Highest quality food, presentation, service, wine, cocktails, and deserts. If you want similar menu items at cheaper price, go for lunch! Often the same menu items but much more reasonable!

Harold Johnstone

Delicious chicken salad. Beautiful view of the creek while we dined.

Bruce Thomas

Spectacular restaurant in Vail. Impeccable service, great wine list, cozy ambience; and most importantly; great food! Recommend trying several appetizers including salmon and pork cheeks! Our group had main courses of pasta, lamb, salmon, and bream! Finally, spectacular desserts are available! We recommend the the toffee and peanut brittle! Thanks to Marshall and Justin for an unforgettable evening at Vail!

Franklin Wheeler

Wow great food and service. A must stop in Vail.

We returned to Sweet Basil last night for our 45th anniversary. We were here last year for the first time and it was memorable so we planned months ago to return even though we are not from Colorado. I will give much credit to last year's experience to our fantastic waiter and support team. The experience this year was not even close to expectations. Service was merely taking an order and putting a plate down-very little time spent at the table and folks were made aware that it was an eventful occasion before we came and after arriving. Part of the order had to be returned and when the replacement item came we were completely finished and waiting for the waitress. Part of the points given are due to the good experience last year and possibility that such does still occur.

The best food I have had in Colorado, the ambiance is valley Colorado. The Succotash is AMAZING, I really mean it, just world class. Run here before the dude who makes it leaves ! The wine list is world clear and aware, sensitive to the fact that French wines are wonderful without pandering on price. BTW, we settled on the Walter Scott, Willamette Oregon Chardonnay - has lemon citrus, rind of grapefruit, and a mineral finish. I really LOVED this dinning experience.

Michael Ianniello

Great food. Small plates. Ok service.

Meagan Whitfield

Bad service. Had reservations for 8pm, showed up before 5pm and the place was practically empty. We wanted to sit out on the patio for some cocktails but were told we couldn't be moved inside for our reservations. We left and went to Up the Creek, spent $70 on delicious chardonnay, cocktails, and coffee. Came back for our reservations and were treated rudely by the bartender and basically ignored while waiting for a table. Hostess offered nothing except an excuse that we may have caught the bartender at a bad time. We left. I gave two stars because the menu looked good.

Margaret Fulton

Wow! This place has some GOOD food! We ordered the share plate fondue, the Chicken Cobb, and the Burger. We loved the food so much we've been trying to recreate the salad at home. The atmosphere and the decor felt a little dated but it is an absolutely must in Vail!

We come very often to Vail and have eaten a couple of times at Sweet basil, it is a good restaurant but don't expect anything amazing. Today we were walking around Vail village around 7:30 pm and decided to walk in and see if there was availability. The hostess was rude and disrespectful, as if she owned the place and we were bothering her just by asking if there was a table available, she mockingly repeated the same sentence twice. There are plenty of good places to eat in Vail, don't bother with this overrated one.

Theresa Marko

The food is just amazing. Really. The margarita was great! For food: the foie gras, the calamari & shrimp comes with tempura green beans and carrots which were so delicious. The chicken larb lettuce wraps were yummy! The agnolotti were little cheesey pillows. The back of the restaurant overlooks beautiful snowy trees. Lovely place. Great food.

Rick Ciesla

Good place, does the job.

Bandika Fejer

Excellent food served by unusually classy waiters...

Errol Berry

Had an amazing meal here and our waiter (Craig) was fantastic. Get the Brussel Sprouts and the lemon ricotta Farmers Cheese. Also, had a world class beer here, the St. Bernardus Abt 12, a rare find! Would come back again and again

Paul Burke

Always a great dinning experience!

Sean A

Amazing food and experience— Christina, our server, was fantastic. Shrimp and grits A+

Leslie Gottschalk

Great food, good wine selection, nice lighting. Chosen by a very fussy friend who loves this restaurant. If it's good enough for foodie Alex, it's good enough for anyone.

Beverly Neal

Had a delightful evening with delicious food. Will certainly be back again!

Jaclyn E. Holt

I'm very disappointed in Sweet basil's calamari. The calamari is the worst I've ever had; you can’t even taste the calamari flavor because comes with a lot things (green beans, carrots, jalapeños, onions rings)

Diana Badri

We were a party of four on a Friday night. Despite a late reservation, we did not at any point feel rushed. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. There were some minor issues - they did run out of a side and they brought out the wrong app. They offered us a complimentary dessert to make up for it which was very much appreciated except we were too full for dessert! The test is in how they handled issues - they did try to make it right. The food was excellent. I absolutely loved the lamb. Two of our party shared the beef main which was also excellent. I loved that the menu was seasonal. It's an expensive menu but not unreasonably so considering the quality.

Kevin ONeill

Awesome restaurant in the heart of Vail Village. The food is fantastic and the service was just as good. Right by the Eagle River which adds another sweet element to the mix. The lamb was outstanding as was the fillet. And great wine list too!!

Isaiah Thompson

We were there for our anniversary dinner and Robert treated us so well. Loved my salmon and I’m very happy with the service.

Tanner Topkoff

Nice place with nice service. Food is great and it’s worth going to

Eric Ramcharran

I am giving this 4 star as service was a bit slow. Took way to long to get out next drinks of wine and cocktails. We were without for large portions of our meal. The place is very nice Vail Village. There is no parking anywhere close. So plan ahead on that one. Food was amazing. Had lamb t-bones and lobster saffron pasta. Yummy. Desert was fantastic too.

Michael Rosenberg

Excellent food and top-notch service. The Lamb T-bones were great. One of the top restaurants in Vail. Would definitely return to Sweet Basil if ever back in Vail.

Sylvie Sikand

Nice place with modern american food

Scott Pinner

Food was very good and service was decent. A bit pricey for lunch but it's Vail. Calamari and shrimp were very tasty as were the seafood tacos.

salma 2012

Nice burger

DAVID Prendergast

Food was excellent as was the service.

Outstanding food and wine

Sagar Patel

Great atmosphere, diverse menu, good drinks. Waitstaff are excellent. Pricey but worth it. I prefer it to Mountain Standard.

David Gonzalez

Consistently amazing! Truly talented chefs helm the kitchen at Vail’s best. Thank you for a spectacular dinner. We had the pork cheeks, foie, salmon tataki, lamb t-bone and the pork chop and both were amazing. We paired them with a Nebbiolo from Lombardy. A wine that I wouldn’t have known to pick but paired perfectly. As always at Sweet Basil save room for the toffee cake, it’s out of control!

David Coska

Nice Italian restaurant with two entrances (and a lot of wind in the corridor restaurant in between). Pasta arrived cold but high end quality. Great service. Not very foreigners friendly. A local institution

Eric Smith

superb!

Beth Mark

Incredible food for incredible price

Shanna Bauer

Amazing food and attentive staff who know what they're doing recommending beer and wine pairings. Loved it!

This is interesting .... I received request from the general manager to call him about my three star review which I believe was appropriate for the food quality, service and price. After taking the time to leave a message to call back, he never did. ...I have changed my review to two stars. Now for some back story. I am a physician and serious foodie. I went to Sweet Basil on a recommendation for lunch. The cauliflower soup, mushroom risotto, toffee cake were absolutely sublime, as well as the service from Jessie and his recommendation for wine. I begged for a reservation for dinner that night which was sold out. He was able to find a table at 9pm. I was so excited to go back that I didn't care about not trying one of the other fine dining establishments in Vail. Then dinner came.... What a difference....the server was a blonde woman with an arrogant, standoffish attitude. The first dish was a Hawaiian ceviche. Sweet and odd. You couldn't taste the fish, it could have been tilapia. Definitely not Hawaiian and definitely not ceviche. Next was brussel sprouts. Ridiculous. So sweet it could be dessert. There was no warning in the description that the dish was that sweet. I had to send it back. I almost never send food back, but the chef needs to control his sugar for main dishes. The waitress was offended. She glared at both of us and said it was her absolute favorite dish on the menu. ...that made the mood for the whole dinner confrontational. The next dish was sea bass. It was excellent. This was the recommendation from Jessie for dinner. So the review of three stars was an avarage of the two meals. Now that the general manager hasn't called back after asking to speak with me; I'm changing my review to two stars. Sorry.....your restaurant deserves it. Don't get too big for your britches, don't serve ridiculous sweet main courses and follow up with your own request to talk to a customer.

Andrew Geissler

The fried brussel sprouts and saffron linguine were amazing. Service was on par and ambiance was nice.

Estelle E

Very disappointing. Have eaten here at least 6 times. The last time we went, we had a 12 people that were already seated from our group, two of us came a bit later to get something quick with them before they all left, and we were told they were no longer serving. Mind you this was in high season and we were very clear that our party was already seated with full bottles of wine and champagne. So they were going to be there for awhile longer. The no can do attitude is unappreciated and unacceptable. Unfortunately telling anyone in the establishment of our disappointment went on deaf ears that day, we realize that there is no reason to eat at an establishment that doesn’t appreciate customers that come in frequently. We were the ones that recommended this restaurant, so the only reason that group of 12 came to eat and drink there was because of us.

Ryan A

The steak medallions were perfectly cooked and the atmosphere was perfect for a date. Even though we cane right near close everything was perfect. Very friendly waiter.

Gregory Hays

Best service of any place I have been to in vail! Craig was a fantastic guide on our culinary journey!

Miss Cool

Wonderful drinks

Lila K

Salty foods. They took it back to fix but a new one still salty again. The server explained that they did marinate the meat with salt and sprinkle sea salt on the top to finish before it’s served. Oh well! They should have not sprinkled the sea salt on the top for the remake one.

Russell Brown

Best burger in Vail

kelly Dempsey

Service was excellent but portions were very small for the price. The king crab agnolotti was excellent tasting but barely enough appetizer for two. The halibut was dry and the grits are definitely not southern style.

Peter Giambattista

Fantastic food!!! I had the best appetizer of my life! My sons response was he just had the best Hamburger he has ever had. We sat on the balcony overlooking the river and fire pit area, very quiet. The wait staff was top notch, very attentive and informative. This will be the first stop when we return to the area.

roderick nasbe

Elegant restaurant. Nice setting. Good food. Definitely recommend.

Clinton Fitch

A fantastic place to dine with a great selection of mains that are uniquely created. The atmosphere here is great too, with a well stocked bar and excellent mixologists. They also have an expansive wine list. As for food, try the roasted Brussel sprouts and the Lamb is phenomenal. I highly recommend both and the Sticky Toffee Pudding to end the evening.

Sandra Simmons

Can't recall a better lunch I've had than Sweet Basil's ahi tuna crudo. Our server was very personal and just the right amount of attentive. We had a table on the patio - highly recommended. The bartender was engaging and every one of us loved what he created, I especially loved the drink my daughters ordered (Mountain Views). The only hiccup was the hostess who told us we'd get the next table of 5 but she forgot us and seated two tables of five before my husband reminded her. We were seated quickly after and I suppose it was partly our fault for not speaking up earlier. We had a good attitude about it, I mean, we're in Vail - hello! All in all, a wonderful experience, my lunch is pictured.

Felipe Lahrssen

We come very often to Vail and have eaten a couple of times at Sweet basil, it is a good restaurant but don't expect anything amazing. Today we were walking around Vail village around 7:30 pm and decided to walk in and see if there was …

Sorry in advance for lighting of pictures. Food was out of this world. Some of Vail’s best. Service impeccable. 10/10 and we will be returning. Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing whipped feta with chili and honey. A refreshing app. The oxtail ragu was out of this world and you could taste the truffles. Highly recommend

absolutely unbelievable food. I have traveled a lot and have been to many different restaurants, but hands down, this is the best food I have ever had. The spring rolls, oysters, and lamb is incredible!! Besides the meal the service is unbelievable!! If I can give them more stars I would! Thanks for a GREAT experience!!!

sgilman1985 .

Bit of a let down. The Pumpkin ice cream is worth going just for that...if they gave you more than a thimble full. I had to eat a second dinner because the portions are so small. But....the flavors were incredible all around just...give me more.

Andrew Sardone

My wife and I went to Sweet Basil for our 10th wedding anniversary. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. Our server was far more concerned with the table of 5 behind us to even introduce himself. The pork tenderloin my husband ordered (which was said to be cooked to medium) was so over done and dry that it took him several minutes to chew one piece. I was hoping for a quiet, intimate restaurant where we could share some conversation and reminisce but it was so loud that we barely spoke to each other. When we did try to talk we had to practically yell just so we could hear ourselves over the noise of the restaurant. We didn't linger for dessert or anything extra, we both just wanted to get out of there to the quiet of the outdoors. It was an epic bummer.

Whitney logsdon

One of my best meals ever. Start with the ceviche...you will be glad you did!

The food was good but not great considering it is supposed to be high-end dining. Service was excellent. Very pricy. The grapefruit tart dessert was delicious.

Poor experience! My observation: two Caucasian couple walks in before us and receive warm welcome and the table right away then I (brown person)walk in with my wife and a toddler and fail to get any attention from two employees chatting, finally my wife says hi then an employee asked if we had a reservations or else we would have to wait an a hour. Seriously? No way I think the restaurant was booked even it was the way they treated disgusted us.

Everything was wonderful up until the time the postage stamp serving of food was presented. Sure it's Vail and sure it's overpriced but $90 a person and we were still hungry just doesn't cut it...

Gluten free, what a fine restaurant, several Gluten free options and a fantastic dessert, wait staff was very knowledgeable about gluten free

the waitress Laura from Romania was SO RUDE.. there were 6 of us. 3 couples and we were ALL taken aback at her attitude and abruptness. the food was good but not to take that kind of abuse

you can't go to Vail without a visit to Sweet Basil. Service is always impeccable and the food truly delicious. You might scoff at the suggestion of the Cesar salad - but there's a reason it has been on the menu for so long. It's divine. Ditto for the Saffron Linguine.

Great food, great atmosphere. If you have allergies, they will take care of them very well to enable you to enjoy the dish.

My wife and I went to this restaurant while we were in town for our honeymoon. Despite this restaurant being highly recommended, we were really quite shocked by how we were received and handled as guests. We were fortunate to be in the area during restaurant week and went to many of the higher end dining options in the area and were treated exceptionally well everywhere but Sweet Basil. Upon entering the restaurant we were addressed in a very awkward and uncomfortable manner by the hostess. We very much felt steered away from the rest of the clientele and seated in a different area of the restaurant with a less desirable view. However from our table we sat and observed no less than 3 more couples enter and receive and warm welcome and were offered seating in the other dining area. The only other table that was seated in our area was a mother with a young child, which from our perspective appeared to have been seated there to keep separated from the preferred customers dining in the other section. Overall we were left to feel segregated and unwelcome. Our server was very professional and provided excellent service, and our issue with our experience is not with her. The food was good, not great. Pricing was on par with other dining options, but with a cold and unwelcoming atmosphere. My wife and I were very let down by the experience in general and even more so as this was supposed to be the last and among the nicest dinners of our honeymoon.

Food and service were both amazing. Great cocktails, lamb shanks to die for

They managed to work us in without a reservation. Fantastic food, great service. Recommend the rack of lamb when they have it. The cheddar fondue makes a great appetizer.
