This Restaurant is included in the category of Eclectic restaurant.
Very disappointed with my visit today. We got there around 1:40 pm. We have to wait to be seated because apparently there were no tables available, half of the restaurant had empty tables, we decided to ask the reason why we couldn't sit on the available tables, one of the waitress said "that side was close" obviously they don't know their business hours. On google and their sign outside clearly says 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. I manage a restaurant and that is not how you run a restaurant business. Service does not stop until your hours of business are met. Besides that the hospitality from the waitress was non-existent. After about 25 minutes we got our food. What got me more upset that's as soon as we get our food one of the waitress brings out the check. They were more worried about closing the restaurant down and getting us out then actually caring for the guest, the most heated moment was that they included their 20% gratuity tip but not once did they check how we were doing or if we needed anything else to us. We had to be waiving or get up for service. They were quick to add their tip for service was not provided. I am in the restaurant business and I am the type of person that loves tipping someone that went out of their way to provide service and hospitality but this was ridiculous. I love coming to Uncles John's cafe but whoever is running Uncle John's cafe now need to retrain their team.
Very neat and welcoming restaurant. They offer generous portions and for reasonable prices. We loved the meals very much and the waiters were very amiable and informative. I recommend this place.
I came 2 hours before closing & let me tell you the food was amazing and the server was a sweet heart as well. I had the salmon , mash potatoes, sweet potatoes & green beans. It was so tasteful. I would def recommend.
Edit: Petrina rocks! Customer service here is legit, as usual. I work tech/customer support and it's refreshing to come down here and feed off the genuine positive energy that the staff here give off. Chinese American and American comfort food. You see plenty of of Law Enforcement and Fore frequenting this place-- a good sign the food is good. They recently got busier after being featured on a BuzzFeed video for steak. Congrats to them-- they deserve all the traffic because the food is good. My daytime go tos are the shrimp in lobster sauce, sweet & sour pork and shrimp, grilled pork chops, and of course, the steak and eggs breakfast.
I am sad to say the experience was horrible. This spot was a favorite of ours. We did not mind driving to DTLA to go eat Uncle John's. Lost the family owned "feel" it had. The family sold the business about 2 years ago. Now there are a whole new bunch of trendy employees looking to be discovered. We got our toast first. Before our drinks... then one out of three dishes came 15 minutes after that. I waited politely for my family to get their food... but we had to ask what happened to the rest of our order. Twenty minutes later.... they completed our order. Our toast was hard by then and the first dish was cold. Our waiter only checked on us 2 times. To take our order and to drop off the bill. #lasttimewegothere So sad. Uncle Johns lost it's touch.
Loved this place from the first taste. Had a sister come into town and asked me to take her here again.
Old hole in the wall diner with surprisingly good Chinese food. I like their steak and eggs with fried rice. The best value for blocks IMO
Bland Chinese food with indifferent service. No reason to waste a meal here.
Over rated, over priced. Next time I'll just go to Panda Express
The food is good - I especially liked the steak. I’m deducting a star only because of how long it took someone to acknowledge people waiting to be seated. I know that sitting at a bar generally doesn’t require any action beyond a hand gesture or “Bar? Go ahead!”. After waiting for about 10 minutes another person walked in, and that person eventually ended up calling the restaurant to place a takeout order after becoming invisible. It wasn’t until a party of four came in that prompted a server to ask me “are you waiting?” and I was then directed to sit at the bar. Moral of story is to ignore the “Please wait to be seated” sign if you’re solo.
Steak and eggs for $12.75??? Can't beat it. Such a great deal. And the included English muffin is bomb.
They have good portions but my group and I ordered hash browns and it seems like they were mashed potatoes. The steak is amazing , fried rice is ok but it almost seems like it had been sitting out for a while. Pricing is decent. I may give it another shot one of these days. The staff is very friendly.
Fried spicy pork chops.
Went here because it was on Buzzfeed's worth it. Opened since breakfast time. For about $13 dollars, you can have two eggs, a steak, a side and a bread. While i think the steak is tough (even tho cooked medrare), i love having fried rice coated in runny egg yolk with some flavorful steak
Spicy Salt Pork Chops, enough said. Chinese-American Fusion food. Their Steaks and Eggs were featured on a show that highlighted it's easy-on-the-pockets cost and relative deliciousness. It's a smaller spot, so it gets crowded quickly. Very affordable with huge portions and you're able to customize your sides.
Cafe food and the feeling here is great. Good place to relax and unwind. The staff was helpful and kind. It has a great feel to it. Feels like a place in Charlotte that I enjoyed visiting.
I love this place, excellent food & service. The service was very welcoming and sociable. Prices that won't break you.
i will be back with my relatives. it has a cool interior.
Great place for a quick bite
Visited for the first time today and will definitely be coming back! Perfectly hidden away, fast service, and unbelievably low prices. Oh....you can also get breakfast for lunch!
came here on a friday i think. looking forward to coming back with my friends. the bill was fair i would say.
Oh I will for sure be back they said the steak and eggs with frird rice is a go to. I wasnt let down at all. I ordered medium well with scrambled eggs. So good my my bro got the spicy pork chops I'll be getting that the next time I come. And both came with toast.
Saw this on WorthIt 2 yrs ago, excited to try! Finally in the downtown area for festival. It was packed around 10am Sat which was a good sign. Unfortunately, the service was slow. Took forever to get food/water/refill. The male waiters were slightly incompetent. After getting our food, most of our steaks were medium well. One of the homies got Xtra well done so he had to send back. Then his steak came out extra rare (when he asked for medium) like most cases when a Denny messes up. Overall, the food was decent for eggs hashbrown and steak @$12.99 price point but the service and exp was forgetable.
The best breakfast in downtown. No question. The lunch is Chinese but that's fine. You can get breakfast late and it's not greasy like Denny or islop.
Fried rice lacking flavour. Steak is flavourful n filling. Value for $$
Steak and eggs for 14$. Can't get cheaper than that I think. Steak was good and the eggs ok.
Diego’s service was excellent! The spicy pork chop he recommended was superb. I have to say though the portion is humongous. I’d ask for half the serving of rice given if I went back!
Spicy pork chops with fried rice or chow mein. Or spicy pork chops breakfast
The best spicy pork chops. I enjoy all of their other Asian proteins like orange chicken, sweet n sour shrimp/pork, and charsu. I also just found out that they have Cajun dinner. I can't wait to try it.
Food is amazing along with its service. Getting their steak and eggs was something ill never regret. Im sure the rest of their menu is solid. The quality of the meat slice is not something to be too picky about, its $11, what more should I be asking for really.
My Dad just hopped me to this spot and it is cool. The portions are large and I like that I can get fried rice with my breakfast. I had the spicy fried pork chops...yummy. Only thing that was off was the heat on the hot beverages, coffee an hot water for tea was lukewarm at best. But that is an easy fix.
Great lunch spot for Chinese food. Large portions, tasty. Highly recommend the spicy pork chops.
Uncle John's Cafe is great! The staff is awesome; especially Jessica!! She's super sweet and attentive! Hands down the reason why we keep coming back! The ambiance is cool & the price point is optimal. Definitely recommend this establishment & "My" waitress! ;)-KK
Dishes Taste good but lack presentation. Crowded during lunch time.
Spicy Pork Chops and Spicy Fish breakfasts are awesome...nothing bad to say about service...prices are fair..love this place!
One of my all time favorites in downtown Los Angels, the vibe has changed since my first visit, it's a good thing by the way. Delicious food, I usually order the spicy pork chops and eggs with rice, mouth is watering as I write this review. I haven't seen the veteran servers, I hope you're well. Can't wait to see you again.
I tried the ham & cheese omelette. A good alternative to the Pantry...
I tried to order by phone call like five times nobody answered the phone so finally I drove ask the guy at counter if they change their phone number and he just went like just like nope we don't answer the phone when we are busy I don't know if they change ownership but that's bad when you don't answer the phone and you have a business that's really bad I haven't been here for a while but you look like it's not the same owner which is stupid cuz they used to be so nice
Value for your money!
Best chow mein at los angeles california
Great food at a great price. Did the two eggs with steak and fried rice, perfectly cooked and delicious
The service here is outstanding.
For those coming here for the worth it episode of steak and egg. Be warned. The steak is nothing but a bundle of sinue. I guess they used cheap cut of meat because price is low. But it's so tough you can't even chew it and it can break your teeth.
We were in downtown Los Angeles and we were hungry for both Chinese and Cajun. Surprisingly they have them both available at Uncle John’s. The steak and eggs caught my attention which comes along with fried rice which I substituted for chow mein. It was a very unusual combination but came out great. Our server, Diego, was right on point as soon as we arrived. He greeted us and automatically bought us water with lemon wedges. The water never stopped coming as he continued to make sure we were fully taken care of throughout the evening. The food was delicious however my steak came a little bit more raw then when I ordered as medium rare. He saw that I only ate the sides of it as I didn’t want to complain as the food was really good. He took notice and took my plate to have my steak cooked just right and even brought a side of fried rice for the inconvenience. To me that’s customer service at its highest caliper and should be recognized for it. We noticed how he continued to hustle in making sure the rest of the customers were fully taken care of and I was extremely impressed of how far he was willing to go in making sure that I was fully satisfied. This was my first experience at this establishment and I can assure you with the experience that Diego gave along with eating great tasting food, I will be back only to bring more friends with me. Thank You Diego
Nice casual restaurant. Great for breakfast foods at any time of the day. Service was fast and friendly. It does get busy during lunch hour so go a little before or after the lunch time rush to ensure you have a seat. I had the french toast & scrambled eggs which were great. I also ordered the hash browns which I would skip the next time. Overall good experience. I would recommend.
Casual, delicious, homey food. Friendly service.
Awesome place and good food.
Have to try the Kale Ceasar salad, absolutely amazing. Luke the bartender was very friendly and the Decor was lovely.
I had the Mongolian beef with fried rice for dinner and it was the best. I love their customer service.
Friendly employees and bomb food deserve a 5 star
Came here after watching YouTube Worth It and did not disappointed, steak and egg for only 11 bucks and it came with a giant pile of fried rice, steak was cooked right as was the eggs, fried rice was a big blend and mixed in the steak juice and all is well.
Amazing fusion of Asian cuisine and American diner fare. The omelettes are excellent. The “hash browns” are basically mashed potatoes and were very disappointing, get the fried rice. I had second thoughts about fried rice for breakfast, but saw the gentlemen next to me get it and it looked awesome. Highly recommend the chasu omelette!
Food was ok. But the wait time was not worth it. Waited more than 20 minutes for 2 dishes. Half of which was just fried rice...
Porkchop is the best
Worst service we've ever experienced in LA. Waiters were rude and unwelcoming from the moment we walked in, no drink refills offered and they never came to check how our lunch was. No clue how this place is so highly rated!!
Nice little cafe serving the best American and Asian cuisine. I got the steak and eggs and with fried rice and toast. It was definitely worth it
It's all about the experience. The owner, Petrina, makes sure all her customers are taken care of. I stumbled on this hidden gem one night when I was in a hunger emergency. Been going back ever since and Uncle John's Cafe always comes in clutch. The evening Cajun boils are the best. Nothing beats coming to this place and getting great tasting seafood at a low price. They're not like other DTLA restaurants that will charge $20 for a little tiny piece of fish. It's actually filling and reasonable. The owners are super personable with killer service making it just the cherry on top. Bring your friends!
You get a lot of food for what you pay! Steak is
Came here from Colorado after seeing the Worth It episode. Steak and eggs was a good deal and delicious! Definitely recommend.
Passed this location walking down the street and stepped in not expecting much, the food turned out to be super delicious. American Chinese diner fusion food. I had the fried rice with scrambled eggs and teriyaki chicken. Soooooo good. Add some chili oil to your rice and eggs for an extra kick. Portions are generous so you will likely take home some too.
Their $12.75 steak is great. I don't know any place else where I can have such a good steak at such a low price. It even comes with 2 eggs and fried rice on the side. Fried rice was also great. The best place for breakfast in downtown LA.
Amazing breakfast! Had an excellent steak with eggs and hash browns all for only $11!! That's the dream! Only downside was the service. Perhaps understaffed on the waiters/waitresses? But it wasn't that bad of an experience and would definitely recommend
Great place for a full meal in the morning. Loved their steak matched with brown fried rice.
Uncle Johns Cafe a golden gem were you can get rice and pork chops for breakfast or steak and eggs, i highly recommend their juicy steak best in town lets not forget about their dedicated loving and friendly staff, made me feel like family .. Thank you all .. And See you soon.
Saw this place because of "Worth it" and this place is great. I never thought that steak, eggs, and fried rice fit well together and at a good price
The staff is so friendly, the meal is in large portion. Rare for the steak is perfectly.
Opens at 6:30 AM specials daily great food good breakfast and Chinese food it seems strange but is actually really tasty a local favorite
A few years ago I would give 5 stars, even though the restaurant is not a fine one. Unfortunately the food is not the same anymore, however still very interesting and tasty. Hopefully the new management will keep it up!
I love the spicy pork chops
Food is good. Was there in the evening Pop music was too loud. Servicer could have checked on me more. I had to ask for a refill of my tea.
Great no frills breakfast and lunch options
Great salt and pepper porkchop. Great place for a quick breakfast
Perfectly decent diner with a bizarre but fun menu
Would like to give a better rating but haven't sampled the food. I went there to pick up a food delivery and what I noticed was its cleanliness, which is a big plus for me.
The steak was perfectly rare and delicious! $12.75 for steak, two eggs, friend rice, and toast. My friend also loved her honey garlic chicken wings with fried rice for $11.
Great serving size for the price. Food is amazing along with its service. Very nice and affordable.
too bad they open at 7 instead of 6:30 as listed online on their own website as well as on google etc. drove 1 hour for early appointmnt. instead of apologizing, the staff defended herself saying "new hours are posted on the door. ". coupla cop cars were also disappointed.
The steak and eggs with fried rice is the go-to meal for the price. The steak length is about the size of the Samsung Galaxy s9 plus, and is almost the thickness of the knife I was using, for reference of course. I agree with the other reviewers when they say they came to this place based off of the BuzzFeed YouTube videos "worth it!" I know I did. I would say if you come get the steak and eggs, if you come again then enjoy the rest of the menu.
This restaurant is fantastic! The price is friendly and the steak and egg combo that I ate was delicious I can’t believe I didn’t find out about this place before.
I actually love their food however its been a while since I've gone because customer service was lacking. I took food home asked for soy sauce and was told to put it on my food there or get charged 25 cents per pack
Unseeming entrance but this place serves good food! Portion is big too! Must visit if you are out for some Asian food like fried rice and fried noodles!
Spicy pork chops, steak and eggs, the wonton soup- all amazing, fresh and fast. Portions are really big too.
I came here for late breakfast had the steak with fried rice. It was not too pricey and worth the price I paid. Small location but since I went about 11 it wasn't too crowded. Parking is not easy but it never is when in DTLA. It's worth a visit if you like asian/American food.
The food is great, the service is fast and the price is low. Spent a week in downtown LA during which I ate at more expensive restaurants but none had better pork chops than Uncle John's Cafe.
The food was great the staff was awesome and very helpful
Not sure what the folks on Buzzfeed’s Worth It were talking about but when I ate here the steak and eggs were........forgettable. Do get the steak and eggs if you need fuel to keep you going while you explore LA. However better food options (and portions) available at Grand Central Market.
It was really good. I had the spicy pork chops and eggt with fried rice. Rice was a little bland but the pork chops were excellent. I definitely want to come back again.
Food was amazing!
Best in dtla. Hearty portions. Great service.
Parking is a bit of a challenge, but that's not really in control of the restaurant. However there are pay lots here and there within the area. Food is good quality, service is fast and efficient. This place is a favorite for breakfast for people in the area as well as lunch. Food portions are big, so if you're hungry this is the place for you. Chow mein dishes are all great choices.
I haven't been here in a while, I ordered the spicy pork chops for breakfast. It didn't disappoint, food was excellent perfect amount of spicy. If you're good with a little spice I highly recommend this plate. Service was great, the waiter was bbn on top of everything but didn't just hover over us. He made sure we had plenty of coffee and iced water. When he brought us the bill he didn't rush us to leave or sign receipt. Server gave excellent service.
The place was really nice inside and great service. But the food was super bland and disappointing. I probably won't be going back.
My experience at Uncle Johns was fantastic I had many great dishes but the Spicy Fish was my favorite.
This Uncle is hella friendly, not the weird one at parties, great place for some great food.
Delicious steak and great sides!
I had there deep fried pork chops
Good food, have TVs with no volume. Spicy pork chops are great.
really good food
Awesome food, good service
This is my go to in downtown. Corned beef and hash omelet check it out. They also have spicy pork chops wink wink.
Lots of great flavors, but just disappointed that the spicy flavors aren't that spicy. I love that they sell smaller sized portions at fair prices, so you can try a bunch of different flavors.
Pork chops, good. People nice. Prices good.
It was so delicious. Service treated us so nice.
Great food, great service. I had trouble on what to choose cause menu was so large, but server recommended me some menu items, and I picked the spicy pork chop. Great serving size for the price.
Great food and ambience. It was pretty nice and the staff was really friendly. I would recommend this place for family dinners or a date.
The steak and eggs great value and quality. Old school ambience and service. Been there over 100 times. The service and the quality are extremely consistant. Dont forget they are open for dinner now.
Great value, food was very tasty. As other reviews have indicated, spicy pork chops are the bomb. Fried rice was initially a bit bland, but in combo with the porkchops it was a great side encompianment
Food is really good. The Chinese food is the best downtown and the breakfast is simple and delicious! The only reason I didn't give them five stars is because they NEVER serve everyone at the table at the same time. My food will come out and I'll be almost done eating before my boyfriend gets his food. Fix that and this place will be awesome.
Classic downtown spot. Gotta love getting spicy pork chops and eggs over friend rice for breakfast. Reasonable prices. Parking is on the street.
I love this place. My wife and I have been eating here for about 12years the food is always good. We also love the new owner. She is always nice to us .she makes us feel welcome
Always great food... big breakfast.. spicy pork chops are bomb
Decent breakfast
Great food.
A good place to have an all American-Asian breakfast. The service is very good and the food is made when you order it. Be a lot patient with the servers as the place get crowded specially during breakfast hours..
Came by after seeing it on Buzzfeed's Worth It. We got the Steak and Eggs with fried rice. 10/10 would get it again! The fried rice was simple yet tasty. Steak was cooked perfectly as requested (medium rare). Parking was easy to find (the lot right by the restaurant charged $10 flat rate). The atmosphere of the restaurant seemed a little bland, but the tasty food made everything great!
Best service I have experienced.. Connor was so hospitable, and was quick to explain the menu, as well as making some great recommendations.. the food was delicious and overall, just really pleased with the entire experience.. I will definitely be back.
Great food at decent prices. Thai iced tea was so good I had to get a second one.
Great food and delicious.
Really cheap good food
Steak and eggs do it
The food is great, the service is fast and the price is little low. Thanks
I had steak and eggs with 4 slices of tomatoes and it was really delicious. I asked for and received a medium rare steaks and the steaks was great size. I will be back for lunch!
steak and eggs are pretty good steak a little tough but very tasty
Food with real quality ingredients. The service here is outstanding. The bill was average for the menu.
It was ok..if you are in LA they have decent food
Great food and service.
Good and Quick. Staff was very busy but very attentive.
The food good but nothing too exciting. The service was average. Our waitress got flustered and disappeared for a while. Refills came very randomly and far in between. The food quality was average, the taste was average. I dont know if I would go back.
Ordered chow mein, It was okay. Didn't have much flavor. Their chicken strips and fries are good!
Foods ok and a lot of food for the price
Just not the same service or food anymore. So so sad.
Saw this place on buzzfeed, and boy it doesn't disappoint. I got the Steak eggs and fried rice with Thai tea. Maaan for 12 bucks, its incredible. The only lackluster part is the fried rice but when if you get some of that egg yolk in the rice, and some steak juice, its fantastic. And even better than that is the Thai tea, best Thai tea I have ever had.
The honey shrimp I got was so good I finished it within 10 min. The portions are so large and the server was very diligent and nice.
Been going here with my wife for years just to eat their spicy porkchop and I have never left this restaurant disappointed... just full. I highly recommend this place!
Looking forward to going back again. The bill was appropriate. Kinda of like a cafe in Phoenix that I enjoyed.
We were on vacation in LA and really looked forward to coming here because of buzzfeed's worth it. The service was great, very friendly and fast. We got the steak and eggs and the spicy porkchops. The steak was disappointing, we got it medium rare, and it was extremely tough to chew. Pork chops were okay, a bit tough as well. The flavors were pretty good. Steak and eggs was $14, porkchops were $11, decent prices for the portion size. Overall, not too bad, but not great. Bottomline, I do not recommend the steak.
Cafe food and the atmosphere at this location is super good. Got there near six, it wasn't packed at all. Service is consistently good. It has a nice interior.
The only decent Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood.
Good restaurants run by vey nice people. Quick service and very good food. The teriyaki chicken for breakfast was an awesome choice.
Who knew that chinese food & pork chops were an option for breakfast?! HUGE portions, good price, quick service. No frills. Mostly hard-hat clad workers when I was there.
Food was good and a nice cozy place
Casual spot that serves a mix of American breakfast and Chinese food. Big portions.
I've come here a few times with coworkers for lunch. They always recommend the steak and eggs or the spicy pork chops, and I've never gotten them. The dishes I have gotten we're mediocre, and not worth the price. Maybe I need to switch it up. Service is ok, usually because they're really busy.
Loved the fried pork chop plate. The staff was friendly and fast service. Went back and had an omelet which was also good. Great fusion of American and Chinese food.
Great old school style Chinese quick and delicious. Best egg fu young !!! Really. It's a special only on Tuesday and Friday! Yum
Excellent food and service. Good vegetarian options. Servings are big!
They used to be on 8th, and as much as it was a hole in the wall there, I loved it. But since they have moved on to Grand Avenue between 8th and 9th, the food is okay.
Very friendly service and yummy good food.
The steak was perfectly rare and delicious! $12.75 for steak, two eggs, friend rice, and toast. My friend also loved her honey garlic chicken wings with fried rice for $11.
Steak and "spicy" pork were great. Loved the eggs but the rice, although good was not the best I've had. Service was nice and the place was clean so, yeah... oh, and the prices were awesome. I give a solid "A".
I'll say I'm really close to a 5 for here. I came for the steak and it didn't disappoint. Price to quality ratio was ridiculous for a steak, fried rice, eggs, and toast. A little gristle, but the steak itself was surprisingly tender, the eggs were just right, and the fried rice was a perfect middle when you got it all in one bite. What slightly knocked down my review, the house wonton noodle soup. The wontons were good, maybe a little small, but the rest of the soup was a little bland. The pork, chicken, and broth were kind of uneventful. The shrimp weren't bad and the noodles were ok. Just get the steak!
Good value, $12 for steak and eggs with fried rice and toast. Can't beat it. Parking is a challenge.
Food is great! I would have giving it 5 starts. But, u will wait forever on a refill. It never fails. They need to hire more waiters. They usually have a max of two waiters waiting on tables.
If you want an alternative to the crazy lines at Boiling Crab, this is the place. My friends and I always come here if we're feeling for seafood. There's usually just one/two servers, and they may get too occupied if more parties show up. The pounds of seafood taste not as good as boiling crab, but it is very close. I personally haven't tried the Chinese food.
Good taste, and big portions on the cheap, great for breakfast, brunch or lunch!
Dinner at Uncle Johns Cafe is delicious...they had a clean place and service was great. Can’t wait to come back!!
This place is 4 starts for breakfast, especially the steak and eggs, and some lunch/breakfast dishes like the fried pork chop. I would say the "Asian" dishes, like Orange chicken are only OK (not memorable) so 3 stars. Research before you go and you'll have a good chance of enjoying a great meal.
The steak and eggs ($12.75) is a must order and incredible value from this place! The steak was surprisingly big and juicy. The fried rice is ok but the portion and price is what makes Uncle John’s worth going back for. Breakfast ends at 3pm and then the restaurant starts serving Cajun food for dinner.
