Worst dining experience I've had in a while. Rude and listless service. Gave me the wrong Wi-Fi code and the burger had one patty fewer than promised on the menu. Soggy and over-done. Can't recommend.

Being vegetarian, I came in here for one of the Impossible burgers and wasn't disappointed. The vegan BBQ burger was pretty yummy. The place is generally busy with tables close to each other. Service was pretty good. I take off a point because the burger came with nothing 'on the side' as against most other burger joints I've been to.

I had an impossible or burger and was blown away by how good it was. If you are vegetarian or vegan and looking for a good burger, try the impossible burger. The low score is for this location; it was extremely loud and cramped. I would recommend this as a takeout experience.

I would recommend the truffle burger or ahi tuna burger! Also be sure to ask for the sauces platter so you can try different sauces on your burger. I've been to several umami burger locations, I would always order the ahi tuna burger since it's so unique from other burger restaurants I've been to. The fish is really tender and cooked great. This time I wanted to try different flavors so I got the sliders. I ordered (2) truffle burgers and (1) impossible burger. Truffle burger: I would definitely recommend ordering a larger one because you get more flavors out of it, and maybe you could choose how to cook the meat. Since it's a slider, the meat was well done and it wasn't as tender as I expected it to be. The burger felt like it was missing flavor, so I added their special umami ketchup. Impossible burger: I was told to try this burger because they didn't use real meat. It definitely tasted like meat but crunchy meat. It tasted over done but I think it's because it's a slider. Lastly, we ordered half order of fries and sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries tasted too cinnamon-y but it was still good. Overall, it was a good dining experience.

Umami burger used to be my go-to burger place. They were fantastic, but they have gone downhill in the past few months, both in terms of food and service quality. The most recent time, our food was terrible. I ordered my burger medium rare, and when it came out it tasted like a frozen microwaved patty that was well-done. Think crappy room service. The meat used to be super tender, juicy, and flavorful, but this time it was hard, tasteless, and I am not kidding when I say In-N-Out has better quality meat. When I told my server that the burger wasn't medium rare, he apologized and brought another one. However, this burger was exactly the same as the first one. In addition to the food quality, the service was terrible. We went at 2:30pm on a Saturday - not exactly peak time - and it took them over 15 minutes to seat us when the restaurant was not crowded. Every part of the service experience was slow - ordering, waiting for the food, even getting the check. They never came around to refill our water. Not only were the servers just bad, but the restaurant also seemed drastically understaffed. This place used to be amazing, and I'm really sad that it's gone so downhill. Clarke's in Mountain View, The Counter or really any other burger place have better burgers and are much better value for your money.

In general my experience with Umami burger have been underwhelming, but I tried their Impossible Burger this time and really enjoyed it. The patty had nice crispy edges and makes for a great burger alternative. We tried their truffle fries again but unfortunately 1) they never came and 2) when we finally got them, we could barely taste the truffle.

My wife and I both love the Impossible Burger and Umami makes it the best! At this location we were very happy with the burgers, however first, we had clamari which was the best calamari ever! We had lots if sparkling water to wash it all down. The atmosphere here is very unique in that the restaurant is set up to look like a sophisticated library, in fact when I walked in had it not been for seeing food on tables I would have guessed I was in a library or bookstore! The service was a little over the top as our server checked in a few to many times but overall it was a very nice and satisfying time!

I was really excited to try their impossible burger and thought that the whole burger would be vegan. Unfortunately they don't even have vegan buns let alone vegan cheese. So when I got my "vegan" burger, it was just the impossible burger patty. I get that this is catered towards non vegans but there is no reason to alienate the vegan customers. So skip this place if you're expecting to have a nice vegan burger!

This place is delicious and worth the price. Your taste buds are completely excited and they have a good variety of burgers. Edit: a year later, I love this place even more! The inside is decorated with tech friendly wall art, and they expanded their vegan options! The truffle remains as good as always.

Food is expensive however the burgers are juicy and delicious. I had the Umami Burger and Truffle fries. It was awesome. Tastes nothing like the burgers you get in other stores. The burger here has its own unique and distinctive flavor which I loved very much. Very juicy and savory. Also you get pickles when you sit down. The tastes are a bit of a blend of American and Asian cuisine. Loved the experience, just it was expensive. I wouldn't recommend eating here everyday, but you definitely should try once.

The classic umami burger. But did I grow bigger since 4 years ago when I last ate it, or did the burger get smaller? Not sure, but the taste is still pretty on point. Truffle burger, truffle fries, have the right amount of seasoning. Nothing ruins a burger like too much truffle. Asked for medium rare, and they really made it medium rare - there's a mindful and skilled chef back there. Decor is cool too, I feel like I'm eating in a library here. Weird thing to comment on, but the knives here are pretty awesome and sharp, so be careful.

Delicious! A little on the pricey side for a la carte burgers, but it felt worth it. Decent beers offered. I feel like the Brussel Sprouts were a little too "wet", and the slider buns were a little lacking, but the rest made up for it. Very nice waiter. I'd definitely go back to try the Impossible Burger.

I came back and gave this place a second chance since my sister wanted to try it. Good news is that it was a lot better this time. I got the sunny side up burger, she got the manly burger and we both shared some truffle fries. I ordered it medium rare as they suggested and it was cooked medium rare unlike last time which tasted super rare. For the sunny side up burger, there was good truffle flavor, wasn’t super greasy, but it could use more arugula. There was literally like 3 pieces in there. The manly burger was pretty good, but it was too fried. At first, it tasted really good, but then it just tastes really fried and unhealthy the more bites you take. The truffle fries were really really good though. I’m a fan of that. Overall, it was better than the last time I came, but I still wasn’t impressed. Don’t know if I would come back.

So I am a huge fan of Umami Burger - PA. Service was friendly and attentive but not too attentive. Food was good and prices were fair. Server, did not catch his name, was all smiles and super helpful. He checked in a few times with me but definitely left me alone unless needed. I appreciate that. Waters were refilled regularly and it seemed like the staff worked well together to support one another. That is very rare IMHO. The food was excellent. I had the lollipop chicken in buffalo sauce with ranch dressing and the sunny side burger (burger cooked to medium with truffle oil and crisp arugula with a perfectly cooked sunny side egg on time. As I am trying to watch my carbs, i decided to get it wrapped in lettuce. My only complaint was it was not really wrapped in lettuce just sandwhiched between two slices of lettuce which is not the same thing. Umami Burger chefs, take a turn out of the INN-N-Out burger chains and check out their wrapped protein style burgers. That's what i'm expecting when ordering my burgers that way. Anywho... overall great experience and delicious food at a great price. I will be back.

I was really upset about this place. Everyone of my friends was raving about it. I saw the sliders on the menu and thought perfect I can try 3 of their burgers! I ended up with three burgers that were so overcooked they were crispy. Pointed this out to the waiter who offered to replace the dish which I gladly accepted. However, I then waited a little over 20 minutes to get my food, after which all my friends had eaten. After all that I really wasn't all that impressed with the burgers at all. I want to come back and try this place based on what everyone said I just had a bad experience.

You will get Best Impossible Burger here. If you are a group and you want to try a sample of impossible burger you can try Slider Trio. Generally street parking is available around. If you are going on weekends keep in mind that there is a wait time of 30 mins minimum to get the table.

Got a beef burger ($12) and an impossible burger ($13) to try for the first time. Beef burger was very tasty, and the impossible burger (veggie patty with huge resemblance to an actual beef patty) was also surprisingly good. I dont think it tastes that mch like beef, but it's the closest I've ever tasted in a veggie patty. The main difference would be in the texture, its lighter (less dense) than beef. The umami burger has an interesting decor choice, with bookshelves and books all around the restaurant, not sure why they chose that theme. AC was a bit strong, but other than that, the restaurant was pleasant. My review is a 3 stars because: -1 star for the cheesy tater tots ($7) because they were super salty. First bite was yummy but last bites were hard to take. Only finished because I thought they were expensive and I should at least leave fully full. -1 star for overall pricing. $12 for the cheapest burger, with no sides (French fries at $2.5 for half a portion) or drink. More expensive than most other burgers (if not all) that I've had in the area. I understand it is not a fast food and I'm definitely not asking for. $5burger, but at $12it would be nicer if it came with basic French fries and then you could pay to upgrade them to other sides. We ended up paying $20/pp for just 1 burger and 3 tater tots each. We drank water.

Excellent. Just excellent. The venue is aethestically pleasing for all of you food bloggers with the food to match. We got the fish tacos as the appetizer which were my absolute favorite. For our main we got the Umami Burger and the Pulled Asian Chicken Salad. Delicious. Will definitely come back.

We order one real hamburger and 3 impossible burgers .. well the test came out that the 3 impossible burgers look and taste like real hamburgers and even had more flavor than the real hamburger... not saying that the hamburger was bad but very good ..the only thing and its a very small thing.. the impossible burger was a little drier than a real burger .. next time we go its all impossible burgers for us ..

I have been here with friends. Inside the place looks like a library. Maybe it is the only thing that attracts you in here. The burger are lower-medium size, but quite well filled. For an hamburger and a beer you may spend $20-25. The hamburgers are ok, the meat not very succulent. But the stuffing is good. I little bit disappointing that with the burger, no sides are served (fries, salad). Not sure if I will come back.

One of my favorite burger places in the Bay Area! Their burgers are creative, cooked/fried to perfection and just taste delicious. I've had the manly and the truffle, both exquisite in their own ways. They have a surprisingly large number of items with truffles, so the air smells of truffles and if that's your thing, you just have to try this place out. It can be a bit pricey at $14 a piece (not including sides!), but it's worth it if you are craving that perfect burger.

Although Umami takes the time to ask how you’d prefer to have your burger patty cooked they actually couldn’t care less. Despite the namesake, I wouldn't recommend the umami burger: it's actually a bit on the boring side. They make really good impossible burgers here, even with a couple different versions: the standard one on the menu is really good and worth a try if you haven't had it before. I was ready for the burger to be amazing, but it still exceed my expectations, what made it even better was their truffle ketchup, it took the meal to a whole different level. I am specifically rating their impossible burger which is tres magnifique! Looks, feels and tastes like a burger. I wish I had ordered the double patty version because when I was done it was so good I wanted another. Bun and cheese were excellent. Tomatoes were a little mealy looking but I didn't care. Sweet potato fries were also good as was the service (once somebody started waiting on us). It's a small place so there is probably going to be a wait. Takeaway might be a good option but I often feel like burgers aren't as good when you don't ready them at the restaurant. Your mileage may vary

Some good options/variety for burgers. Brussel sprouts, tots, and fries are all solid sides, too. My girlfriend and I used a Travel Zoo deal which got us $35 worth of umami burger for $19. The deal is still good until the end of April. I think it’s worth a visit with or without the deal.

Edit: Just wanted to add, the owner responded below and said to contact them, which I did and they never bothered responding. So, downgrading to 1 star. We went last night and had a pretty awful experience. First, wait staff was bad. They never checked on us and never came to bring us our tab until we flagged someone down. I usually don't knock off stars for bad service though, as long as the food is good. And, well, we ordered our burgers medium rare and they came out less cooked than rare. Pretty much raw and room temperature. So we sent them back, and they did come back out cooked properly and fresh. The next problem though was the flavor. For a place literally named "umami" you'd think the burgers would be savory but they were more akin to something I'd cook at home. Really just kind of unexciting. My wife's truffle burger had 0 truffle flavor (I hate half of it). What's weird is that we used to come here when we lived closer to PA, as recently as 10-12 months ago and the burgers were always fantastic. We wondered if they got new ownership, because the menu had changed significantly, the interior layout was a bit different, the service was worse as I mentioned, and of course the food was much worse. All in all, very disappointing experience. Since we did have a positive history here, we'd probably give it 1 more shot and if the food wasn't significantly better - not coming back.

The best burger restaurant I have ever been to, there burgers are some of the best I have ever tried, but there sides, and appetizers are what make them the best burger restaurant.

We had a delicious burger at Umami over lunch. I went with the impossible burger, which was well cooked and flavored. The fries were that great blend of crisp and soft. I'd like to see it a tad cleaner - but it's definitely a good place for a burger in downtown Palo Alto.

Had some family visit from Florida, and one of them being vegan we wanted to find a place that allowed both my pallette and a vegans. Doing a quick search I found that Umami Burger offered a vegan burger. Already coming here before I knew that their burgers were delicious. We came in on a Saturday afternoon, got seated right away, and had our drinks in quick. Service was amazing. Ordered the Original Impossible burger, WOW! I've been meaning to try this burger for a while, and definitely worth it. Had I not known it was plant based you could not tell the difference. The cheese tots were humongous, but too much cheese for my taste. Definitely got my moneys worth. Food is pricey but fair. Not really aimed for a big crowds, but I don't see it as a reason not to visit.

Burgers were really hard, not cooked well, and didn’t taste good at all. Food is way overpriced for what it is, I definitely don’t recommend. Only reason I’m giving it 2 stars was because the house lemonade was good, and the service was great and staff was friendly.

I have been attracted by the taste of the burger here from the very first time I went here. From then on I visit the restaurant at least once a week. But there seems to be something wrong with the service these days. Last week someone ignored my request of an extra cup of water. And this week they simply gave me the wrong burger with some of the ingredients missing. I ate the fries first after the meal was served, and was not able to find the problem at once. Nobody said anything until I called them. I appreciated it that they gave me a dish of the missing meat immediately, and gave me free fries as compensation. However, I just felt that this small mistake ruined my mood. PLEASE do not make me feel disappointed considering that I enjoy the food here very much.

Sitting amongst books definitely makes the food taste better. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are very polite. I usually go with the impossible burger, somehow I feel that Umami does it the best.

Very good burgers, i drank an ipa beer and it was very good. In this place you can find the impossible burger. The place is cool and quietly, with bookcases to separate the tables. The waiters are gently. Good place.

Me and two friends came here on a Friday night and it was packed!!!!!! Lol. The food did take a while to come out but it's Friday night everywhere is busy so I came prepared to wait. The server was a male. I wish I would have gotten his name. Anyway he was very polite and he was very attentive to us. Even though the food took a while to come out he kept checking on us. Not gonna lie I didn't like the cheesy fries so I'll probably stick to fries without cheese sauce. I would definitely come back in the future.

Food was great, although to some it may seem over-priced, as the size of their dishes (like burgers and fries) are not necessarily the biggest. But they were still pretty good. Good place for a casual lunch/dinner, and it is nice that they are open till 10 PM on weekdays.

Super racist, was waiting in line for 10 minutes because a lady was making a take out order. When she was finished the host (tall white guy) sat a party of 8 and abnother one of 4 before me even though I was there first waiting for quite a while. Highly disrespectful. I’m a chef at il fornaio and that is at up most disrespect in the culinary industry. Never going back to eat in between my breaks.

The one in San Francisco is the best in my opinion. This one comes in second place because I drove 12 miles to get a to go order. I ordered a medium-rare and when I left and bit into it, to my dismay it was cooked well. Over cooked meat. I was not happy. I was looking forward to a medium-rare burger. The fries were cold too. However, the worse Umami burger is in Oakland. Last time I went there I bit into my burger and almost swallowed plastic. Plastic was cooked into my burger. SMH. None of these things should happen when you have over-priced burgers.

Great burgers! Fantastic food, you will however be left standing around for ages as they ignore you and not seat you. Others have said the same thing but the food is great. Service, once you do get it, is good.

Easily five stars of food quality - believe the hype, kids, these are amazing burgers. I've been vegetarian for over ten years and this was my first reminder of what a hamburger is really supposed to look and taste like. Custom homemade sauces were all delicious too. Unfortunately, the service was laughably bad.. it took nearly an hour to get served and they weren't even busy.

Ordered 2x Impossible truffle maker burgers (vegan) for pickup via DoorDash. Fought traffic & got home to discover (by biting into one of these) that what we actually got were BEEF patties, NOT IMPOSSIBLE BURGER PATTIES. As a vegan of 12 years, I can't even begin to tell you how disgusting it was to bite into a greasy, ground-up cow carcass. SO NOT OKAY. We are DONE.

Generally a good burger selection, and you have the option of ordering slides as well, though that's a restricted list. Meat burgers are good, the vegan ones are pretty weird. Quick service, but the place was almost empty around 5pm.

The service here was pretty terrible. We came pretty late and there were very few people eating there, but there was nobody working out front to seat us. After waiting for someone to come out, we were seated and had to wait again anyone to help us. Although the service was bad, the food was amazing. The flavors were incredibly unique. I don't think I have ever eaten anything that tasted like that. I got the throwback burger and it was amazing. Overall, if you're extremely patient, this is a good place for you. In my mind, the food makes up for the poor service, but not enough to justify more than a 3-3.5 stars.

My husband found this gem & we’re so glad he did! Service was awesome. Food was great. Definitely fulfilled our late night cravings for onion rings & impossible sliders (Truffle, Manly, & Original). Next time: must go hungry! We left feeling sooo full!
