This Restaurant corresponds to the category of Latin American restaurant.
This is a small restaurant the specializes in Latin American meals. I had the empanada platter. You get 2 empanadas (I chose Cubana for both), rice, beans, cabbage salad, crema and plantains. Not a super large serving, but certainly enough. The empanadas were perfect. Was there at about 5:00 on a Wednesday evening, and it was starting to fill up by the time I left. The service was very good, and the price was reasonable.
Really good food. Priced a little high for portion sizes but it's so good I don't even care. It's a small restaurant and personable, love the ambience, and the friendly staff.
Our favorite place to go. Empanadas are always fresh.
Food was good but pricey. Service was good but the server gave us the plates all mixed up. Otherwise it was a decent place.
Delicious empanadas in a cozy space. Vegetarian and gluten free options as well.
Excellent food, can't go wrong with an order of tostones. Plenty of selection for everyone on the menu even if you avoid meat. Beautiful setting and an outdoor patio next to an urban garden. Awesome hard working staff, I have not been disappointed here.
Superb empanadas. To-go order was made promptly.
Amazing food, get the platter and try a few empanadas and a perfect portion of rice and beans!!
This place is exceptional the food is also delicious the service is also great the price is a little pricey but it's also worth it also the dessert is the best
The food here is delicious! They serve the best empanadas I've ever had! I recommend the Pura Vida or the cheese and ham! I loved my experience here! Besides that, they have a neat patio out back and they're adjacent to a community garden and they have murals up on the walls leading up to their restaurant. The inside is well decorated with an industrial design.
My first experience with empanadas. They we're really tasty! My favourites were the cheeseburger empanada, chicken empanada, and the ham and cheese empanada. Also, the strawberry and cream empanada and the guava and cheese empanada made for a delicious dessert.
We have been here many times and each time is just as delicious. The food and service are top rate. All the items we have tried do not disappoint. The vegan platter with tostones is very filling. They have some of the best empanadas I have ever had. You can not go wrong with the boricua, bean & cheese or potato. Great local restaurant to support! Very nice place ! Kind of different place, food is very good. Will definitely come back. Can eat inside or they have a very nice patio.
This is one of our favorite restaurants in AZ! We have had amazing meals each time we have gone and our 1 year old loves their empanadas! Everything they make is fresh, flavorful and served quickly! The staff is incredibly friendly and this last visit the owners came and introduced themselves to us! Incredibly friendly people who care very much about their customers and their food! We love having such a delicious, family owned business in our backyard!
I’m a full blooded puertorican from Florida and was raised on empanadas and pasteles. This place has it down, the Cuban, the boricua, and even the cheeseburger just simply blew me away! I absolutely cannot wait to make the hour long journey back here!!!
Great setting, great food, disappointing service. The waiter messed up our order and we were brought more (and more expensive) food than we had ordered. We told the person who brought the food to the table (who I think is the owner?) that we hadn't ordered what they served, and they said they'd talk to the waiter. Then the waiter came out and told us we'd have to pay for it. The difference wasn't massive, but it really turned us off--why should we be on the hook for the waiter's mistake? We've been before and also had issues with the service then. We really want to like Republica Empenada, but are feeling irked.
Lots of variety including sweet ones!
Potato and Greek empanadas were solid and the banana cream empanada was amazing. Fries were a bit dry. Overall excellent lunch spot.
I absolutely love this place!! Can't wait to go back!!! The food was flavorful, the staff was friendly and the service was PRONTO!!!!!
Slow service. Platter and appetizer prices high and food not particularly remarkable.
Went here with both my kids. They both got a bottled drink and I got the sangria. This was our first time trying Colombian food. It was really delicious. We got the two plates on these pictures. They are a big portion so we shared it. Also got fries for one of my kids that isn't that much if an adventurous eater. I was not prepared for the prices on the food but it was worth it for a special dinner and the quality of the food.
4 stars only because they don't have gluten free empanadas but the vegan empanadas combo plate, super delicious!!. The service is great, the owners are working in the restaurant. I will definitely come back . So good!
The service is great but we routinely have issues with at least one order. The empanadas are delightful but sometimes over seasoned. And the papas fritas are overcooked french fries served with ketchup and ranch and nothing like the papas fritas served in Spain. That said, this is still your best bet before seeing a show at Mesa Arts Center.
Delish authentic food that feeds the body and soul. Really you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They have great lunch specials and both indoor and patio seating.
Awesome!!! We were here from Tucson and was told to go try it. Soooooooo good!!! Sweet staff and amazing dessert empanadas!
Great food and staff. Food came out in a decent amount of time and there was excellent customer service!
Amazing food and service! This is hands down the best place to get empanadas.
Over priced over cooked. Portion is the size for for hamsters. I was so disappointed I'd rather stroll down to taco Bell .At least I know their not trying to pretend to be great and taste decent. One star is generous. Best thing you could get here Is french fries .
Wow! Can't decide which was better - the dessert or the main course. Wish this place had franchises so I could have the peanut butter with ice cream empanada back home.
This place came highly recommended by some friends. The food was really good and creative and the service was quick and friendly. The best part was just how culturally rich the little spot was. Tons of Hispanic art everywhere. It was very enjoyable and I will be returning.
Just the best empanadas in an amazing variety. Always great!
Friendly staff and great service. First time eating Empanadas so can't make comparisons but they were really tasty. Appetizers were a little bland and the food could use a little more spice in my opinion. Fun place and I'll be back
Amazing place ....unbelievable food ....service is stellar...100% recomend you eat here !!!!
I'm so in awe of this place. Super fast, really delicious food. A few good vegan options, a lot of vegetarian options. The owner (?) was very friendly. Although somewhat pricey.
Excellent food and great staff! My first time here and I'm definitely recommending it to everyone I know! So good!
If you want vegan food with Latin flair, great fresh flavors but also like a good beer selection you gotta try this place.
The food here is almost always amazing but the customer service is HORRIBLE! They nickel and dime you for everything!!!! There soda machine was down and instead of waiving a 10 cents difference to get a bottle of coke they insisted of charging us for their broken machine. They also would not throw in 1 that’s right, 1 extra side sauce without charging for it. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!
The best empanadas boricua empanada is my favorite great customer seevice
Chill, relaxed, casual vibe - eclectic. Family-run and currently they close on Sunday to give them time to be together away from the restaurant. Now the food -- SOOO Good. The empanadas are not huge in size so you can easily get 2 or 3 with different fillings. I recommend the boricuea - sure I misspelled and the chicken and mushroom. The dough is light and flaky, not heavy and doughy. Flavors are on point. Salads - great choice and very well done. Also we ordered a sampler platter - maduros, tostones and yuca frites - and I would highly recommend that if there is at lease 2 of you dining. Different dipping sauces and great way to try different menu tiems - AND they were excellent. Will go back - easily.
Great food!! Great atmosphere!! Doesn't matter what you order, you will love it.
The Best And I will be back again for more Yummy Food!!! It was apparently already 4. Months ago...It's been to long.
As always service, food, and staff was far above par. República Empanada is an underrated and unappreciated gem in Mesa. Tonight my wife and I dined late for the restaurant and not once did we feel rushed even at closing. The food is fresh, not processed, and local sourced whenever possible.
Stopped in on a whim looking for someplace new. Had the Gallo Pinto, a huge mound of rice and black beans with peppers and cilantro and fried yucca, awesome. Also had empanada platter with the cubano and boricua pork with rice and black beans on the side - very nice. Finished with the Flan which was thick, smooth and simply luxurious. A real find. Nice atmosphere and great service too.
You won't be disappointed. Every empanada I have tried is excellent, back here a few times and will continue to come back, and bring friends who haven't tried. So far everyone loves this place. Some of the combinations described don't sound appetizing at all.. fig, cheese (creamy cheese), and caramel initially didnt sound like a desert I wanted to try.. but I did, and it is my favorite desert empanada, VERY sweet.
LOVE this restaurant! Such a delicious spot tucked away in downtown Mesa. Love being able to support small businesses but also just really love the food! Try the Tostones! Yummy!
Seriously this place is so yummy. The cubano is delicious and even the simple bean and cheese brings the flavor. And the Nutella empanada?! So freaking good. Plan on getting 2 or 3 savory and 1 desert if you're looking to eat a full meal.
Great food. The empanadas are amazing and the selection was great. We had an appetizer sampler which was excellent. A great cozy place in downtown Mesa.
The most exquisite cuban empanadas
Always good food, service, and prices
Very yummy empanadas. Large variety to choose from.
Nice little hidden gem in downtown Mesa. Very close to Mesa Arts Center and just south of Main. Great little restaurant known for their empanadas. My husband is a lucky eater and he lived the cheeseburger empanadas. You can eat inside or on a nice night the patio outside. We ate outside when we were there. My husband is even talking about taking our friends there and he never says that about a restaurant. Definitely worth doing there and priced are very reasonable.
I discovered this place based on all the great Google reviews. Stopped by on a Saturday evening . Lively atmosphere, great food and drink selection. I will return...often.
Excellent, authentic food in an eclectic spot. We'll be back again soon.
Amazing! Fresh, delicious, artfully plated good food. The service is also pretty fantastic. We had a very nice dinner there. Thank you!
Empanada portions were ironically small considering its name. However, the food was delicious all around. Went with a large group of people so the service was a little slow but it was understandable. Our waiter was very understanding and organized despite us having a group of ~14 people, so really great service!
Appetizers were really really good.
Delicious!! Can't help but overeat here every time. Definitely underrated!! Cool atmosphere, awesome decor and friendly staff. Give this place a chance!
Located an easy 5 minute walk from the Mesa Arts Center. Everything we tried was fantastic. Wonderful service. Fair prices. We can't wait to return!
What can I say except “Yum!” I had been trying to get my husband to try this place for years before we finally went, and we’ve been going pretty regularly ever since! The fries are to die for and my favorite empanadas are the Barbacoa and jalapeño popper! Great...now I’m craving it.
The food was fabulous it was 5 stars i would reccomend the restaurant to anyone
In short, it's one of those things you have to do at least once in your life. Without a meal in Republica empanada your life just will not be complete. However, I must warn you, it's likely going to create an addiction. The empanadas are awesome. The rice and beans are a meal onto itself. You can't miss the platters, they include everything you will need to turn a bad day into a good one and a good day into ecstacy! The salsa is a punch in the mouth of flavor, my jaw still hurts.
Every one is so nice and the food is amazing!
This is a real gem. I walked in and recognized it from DDD. I asked the server what guy got and followed good less. Amazing. I we as not disappointed. I particularly like plantains. And these are some of the best fried bananas I have had in a long time. The polla rice stuff was unbelievable. Just all around a very unique and enjoyable experience. Lots of love in the food you can tell
A little out of the way, but excellent food at a reasonable price.
So yummy! Everything I hoped it could be and more. Great lunch special.
This restaurant is amazing. It perfectly balances a casual style restaurant with a classy ambiance and amazing food. I am never disappointed by the food at this place, and I will keep coming back here because the food is so good. They serve classic sodas which is great. Additionally, the staff are super nice and helpful.
Gorgeous location and building. Food was astounding. Service was fantastic. Became a new favorite restaurant immediately.
The empanadas were good, with a couple traditional style and others that add US cuisine to an empanada format. Wished they had a couple more options for salsas, and the spices would have shown through better. Still, good food and great service, I would go back.
One of the hidden gems in Mesa that all people need to try! If you enjoy Latin American food or if you’re looking for something new, you have to come here! I ordered the Arroz Colombiano platter, I enjoyed it. People really come here for the empanadas and usually 3-4 empanadas is plenty to fill you up. The staff was really friendly, we were outside on a table on a really hot on a Friday night and as soon as a table opened up inside they offered for us to sit inside. Has TV’s inside to watch games. The only complaint I have is that it was really loud inside, but I’m not sure how much they can control that. We will definitely be back!
Nice change of pace. And yeah, good food.
Excellent service. Excellent food. Clean and nice inside with some neat decor. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
The food is delicious and made fresh... Has a great atmosphere with awesome service... Also has a nice outdoor seating area... A must try for anyone looking for something different...
I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant and the service was good. I didn't care to much for the food tho, probably should of had one of the empanadas dishes. The fries were cold too.
Pretty good! Very cute inside but I ordered to go and they were very nice and helpful when I asked about vegan options. Liked the potato empanada and the king (pb & j) - both the vegan ones. The potato one had nice spices. I thought the Gallo Pinto was pretty good as well as the tostones that come with it, but the trick was definitely to pour the green spicy sauce all over.
Great place for Latin food. Not just empanadas but nice selection of other dishes. Fast service. Friendly staff.
Well my daughter loves this place so I got take out for her and the staff was very attentive and friendly
Amazing empanadas!! We found this gem by accident and we struck gold!! Our favorites are the Cubana and the Jalapeno Ham Popper. I am also a huge fan of the Watermelon Aqua but they rarely have it (it would be 5 stars if they did). The dessert empanadas are delicious. We took our 10 month old for the first time and she ate an entire empanada by herself!! If it passes the kid test then you know it's good!
The food was hot and really good.
Always hoppin'. This is a good place for a lite bite.
The food here is tasty, and has a relatively good pricing. We went around 11, and were just ahead of the lunch time rush, which swamped the place and it got SUPER loud. I don't recommend going here during rush hours if you want to have a meeting or discuss things.
I usually get the vegan platter, which comes with beans (perfectly cooked - basic without too much seasoning), rice, maduros (sweet caramelized plantains) and one of two vegan empanada choices. I get the potato one. I've also had their beans and rice plate, and tostones (green fried plantains). All are great!
My favorite place to eat in Mesa! The food is amazing, the atmosphere is fantastic, and the staff is the best!
I really enjoyed my visit on 07/24/2019. The food was fantastic and the service was friendly and cordial. My favorite part if the restaurant was this picture I took... as for the food, delicious. We had ordered 1 of each of the appetizers for a group of about 8, and we all had a good share. Separate from the group i tried some of the Vegan empanadas... awesome! Although I must say that the cost per bottle of beer available was a bit on the high side. Ill return again soon.
Small restaurant setting with excellent food and great customer service.
First time here. Soooooo good. Definitely coming back. Achiote Potato and Republicia Chicken. Perfect.
Service is always spot on. It's counter-order during lunch, table service at dinner. Another bonus is that it's housed in a cute mid-century modern building. It's also right around the corner from the Mesa Arts Center, which makes it the perfect place to go before a show!
Delicious, everything we ordered was good and our server was awesome. Definitely a place I will try again..
Good, authentic empanadas, though under-seasoned.
Guy Fieri thought this was good enough to write up and share on his show. Well, we went to check it out and, bingo, he was right. It's out of the way, funky looking with lots of interesting art and Mexico class. As the title of the restaurant says, it's known for the empanada. 10-15 choices along with tostones, plantain, black beans, rice, chicken and pork dishes. There are choices for vegan, vegetarian and cavemen alike.
The jalapeno bean popper empanada was amazing.
The food is delicious and affordable. The staff is awesome too!
Great food, perfect laid back atmosphere.
Inspired! Food is incredible. Atmosphere is warm, inviting, casual and clean. Service and employees are fantastic. Highly recommended!
Great empanadas. Great salad. Great service.
The empanadas are incredible. Flavor is excellent without being heavy. Don't skip the dessert!
Super cute place, delicious empanadas. You can have either savory or sweet ones!
Saw it on Diners Drive ins and Dives!! The Food is Absolutely Amazing and the staff is so friendly. You won't be disappointed.
I got The worst treatment from the lady that works there as a manager which she said she was one of he owners or I don't know what she is but she is very rude very unrespectful if you are an American. I would never go back there again I went there a couple times because there was somebody else working there. Also because I complained about the little scope of black beans she gave me for an enormous price , she said that that was the amount that everyone was getting but I know that is not truth as I saw other people eating the special and there were 3 times that amount. The food is not much flavor, for the amount they charge I can eat in an expensive restaurant in Scottsdale for the same price
One of my absolute favorite places in all of Arizona. The food is always fantastic, both the savory and sweet empanadas. The staff is good, the margaritas are good, the vibes are good. It's a great place.
I don't get to downtown Mesa that often but when I do I eat at this wonderful place. First experience? Go for the empanada platter to get a well rounded taste.
Just a small hidden gem we found. We were waiting on our Jeep to be finished and were hungry. So we Googled places to eat near us and found this place. So glad we did. We have been there 3 times so far. The empanadas are amazing and so was the torta we had. The holiday tamales were the best we have had in awhile. We will be going back numerous times and telling other about this place.
This was my favorite meal during my trip to Mesa and the Phoenix area. I really loved that they had so many vegetarian and even vegan options. My friend enjoyed the empanada platter and I chose the vegan platter. I thought it a little strange that his came with two empanadas and mine only one, even though both platters cost the same. No matter, it proved to be just the right about of food for me to still try one of the dessert empanadas. Highly recommend the Nutella and peanut butter one!
Different from anywhere else. Food is always good. Would like to be more consistent.
Delicious empanadas, the pastry is crisp and the filling is delicious.
Awesome.... get the El Capatin
Always delicious food! Great sangria and margaritas too. Would definitely recommend.
Cute little place. Good for a date, but small for groups bigger than four, they had to split us up. A little understaffed, waited longer than expected to be seated with plenty of empty tables. Stick with the empanadas, they were very tasty. Main dishes are very bland, and not authentic.
Great fried empanadas few places make these in Mesa.
Great selection of empanadas and fun staff.
Best known for their delicious, expertly-crafted empanadas filled with inventive flavor combinations, República Empanada cool neighborhood hangout is a great place for a bite to eat with friends - and their namesake specialties are definitely deserving of all the hype they’ve been getting. We tried the jalapeño potato, the Pernil, the ham and cheese and the El Capitán and all of them were absolutely scrumptious, with each filling being distinctive and bursting with flavor, all wrapped up in a flaky-yet-tender puff pastry. I kind of wish that they sold an “everything sampler” with one of every single empanada they offer so that I could try them all!
You know the food is good when you can’t get yourself to stop eating and you end up over-eating. That’s happened to me every time I’ve been there. The food is spot on and the environment is excellent.
Overall it was not what I expected but not was I wrong. The food is very filling, staff are quick and what a great experience.
The decor is charming, the wait staff friendly and the food delicious. We went with our 2 young kids and did not feel out of place, but it would also be a great date night. We will definitely be coming back.
Amazing service and food ever time
Love this restaurant! Took my aunt here for dinner before heading to a NatGeo event at the Mesa Arts Center down the street. The food was delicious!
Great Empanadas. We tried a bunch and liked them all.
This place gave us food poisoning. Service was horrible. Stay away
Such a fun and different place to eat.
Great atmosphere! Empanadas stuffed with flavor, 2-3 should satisfy most
My new favorite restaurant. All of the food is awesome. I ordered the republic chicken and peril empanada and sandia to drink. The dessert plantain and cheese is my favorite. Food is made to order and so fresh.
Walked in with a party of two and a couple in front of us where told the wait time would be a few minutes then when we placed our name on the wait list it was 25 to 45 minutes ......how does that happen? I use to come here a lot and now I don't know if I will be back
Tried this place today and I felt in love with the empanadas especially the Boricua Empanada , this is quality food , it would be nice if they open a second location on in Phoenix , would go to it everyday
Firstly I tried 6 empanadas while I was here. 4 savory and 2 sweet. Oh my God. This is such a unique place. There are literally no other places doing what they are doing here. Every single bite was delicious. The staff was so welcoming and kind thta I will absolutely be going back again. Try the banana and cream empanada!!!
I should take away a couple of stars for their involvement in me getting fatter but their food is too good to do them like that! The place is nothing fancy and you’d never know it was there unless you knew to look for it, but it’s a hidden gem for sure.
Great food, great ambience, great music!
Yummy empanadas both savory and sweet ones!
Try the different flavors of Empanadas and don't forget to try those Yucca bites appetizers.
Great food very nice people beautiful place
I loved the Cubana and the Dizzy Fig empanadas! Warm and friendly service. I'll be back soon.
Pretty good prices and lots of empanada variety. No beers in draft.
Nice selection of empanadas. Great seating area outside, cozy and beautiful. Excellent service. Family owned and they love what they do!
Pernil empanada was awesome. Portions are small and pretty overpriced but the flavor is def there.
The Cubana and Pernil empanadas were absolutely delicious. The Maduros were also exceptional. We will most definitely be coming back. My wife had the Banana Cream empanada for dessert and she loved every last bit. I'm so glad we found this gem. Keep doing what you're doing.
Delicious. Affordable. Satisfying.
First time visitor a few weeks ago. Food was pretty good but I didn't care for the atmosphere. I don't like being crammed in with a bunch of other people at one long table. There was a single table open but for some reason we couldn't sit there. Don't see it as a place I'll go back to.
Great place for lunch or an early dinner.
republica chicken is the best!
Food was great. Prices okay. Establishment ambiance was so so.
Good empanadas, but a bit pricey for the quantity of food. Delicious fillings and nice staff. If you been craving an empanada, this is a great place to go.
Amazing Empanadas. They have the classics, and tons of creative options. The banana cream pie empanada was not too heavy and they made it in house with real bananas. None of that fake putting stuff.
Really enjoyed the pork empanadas, the desserts were great as well. If you get the fig empanadas dessert I would hey it without icecream
Good food if you're looking for something different
loved the atmosphere and the food was really good. could use some more vegan options but it's a start
Great empanadas in a really chill environment. The service is always top notch. Get the boricua you wont be dissapointed!
An absolute FABULOUS introductory to modern Central American cuisine! You cannot go wrong with the combination of the Empanadas and Sandwiches, indeed! Without question, Republica Empanada Restaurant has mastered their craft of modern food-art. Get there - or remain tastebud-square.
So yummy! Exactly what I was hoping for - authentic and flavorful empanadas. And it was BUSY at lunch time so that tells you something! There was a great variety to the menu, but they helped me make my decision with their lunch special - really helpful. Will definitely go back :)
Went for the empanadas, never got past the fried yucca and black beans with rice and vegetables. That was intentional, almost, to be sure and come back. The food was delicious and, according to my companion from Central America, pretty authentic with room for regional differences. She liked it, I liked it. I also had a Nicaraguan beer that I have never seen before, excellent choice. We will definitely be back, next time for empanadas
Like the papas fritas with the dipping sauce it has. Have really enjoyed the bean and cheese empanada with their green sauce The nutella empanada with peanut butter is my favorite so far.
