REVIEWS OF The Cookery IN Alaska

Cosmos Darwin

This was easily the best meal of our two-week trip to Alaska. The scallops appetizer, the crusted halibut entree, and the "charcuterie board" made of chocolate and candied fruits were each mind-blowing. The venue is cute and lively. Highly recommend!

Jaclyn Berkley

Inside was very hot and required getting there early for a full dinner — outside had a cool breeze and offered tasty starters, drinks and oysters. Cute outdoor patio area with view of outdoor kitchen. Sold out of all oysters except some $4 options from Juneau - good sized and super creamy!

MJ

No fish and chips here! Delicious, high above anything else in Seward. Fresh food prepared with creativity (love the Asian touch on some of the dishes). Professional and attentive service. Not cheap, but well with the price. Enjoy! No reservations, so get there early!

Well well well, the Cookery. We were initially told that people start to line up before 5PM (they open at 5), and thought to ourselves, seriously, that good? I was at least a bit high nose, thinking this town is just so lack of proper dining so this little place now gains all the desire. Kind of right, but more than that. We tried to abide by the rules but only able to dash there at 5PM. And most of the tables were full. The service is attentive and professional. They indeed live up to their reputation and it is totally worth the wait. The fish, both salmon and halibut is just done to perfection, seared skin with a melting center. Well balanced sauce, not dominating your palette and overwhelming the fish original flavour. They are generous too! (For such a fine dining resto, I think I had the biggest piece here in this town) Great selection of wines to pair. Happy hour options of cheap but over the top oysters. Undeniably that was the highlight of the trip. Cheers, the Cookery!

Lidice Torres

This was absolutely the most amazing restaurant in all of our Alaska trip. They use the freshest ingredients. I personally enjoyed the smoked salmon. For dessert the Dutch Baby with their homemade cream cheese ice cream is yummy. The staff …

We went here for our last dinner at Seward, on a vacation which had a lot of great food, and this was probably the best food of all. Since the place doesn't take reservations, we had to wait for a while but the hostess graciously offered us …

Delicious Salmon an Hailbut. Great service and laid-back atmosphere. Expect to wait a little bit to be seated, but it is definitely worthwhile the waiting time. Also the patio is a waiting area with beverages and oysters as an appetizer.

Srikanth Gottam

Oyesters are really good. I tried the fish , soup and bread and they are amazing. Staff are friendly.

Brandon Bennett

Great meal in Seward. Back patio for a pre dinner drink in the cool evening was a perfect start. The food here is inventive, fresh and delicious. It also has good atmosphere, being popular with a central bar and a lot of energy in the place.

Dan Becker

Excellent food and excellent wine! We had the specials of the day, shrimp appetizer and sable fish main course. We also had the mushroom toast appetizer. We had the Seven Falls Merlot, Michael David Cinsault, and Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon. The meal was awesome.

Outstanding food, casual atmosphere, friendly service.

WARNING: go early or go late. Two hour waits especially on cruise ship days. You can wait out back in the open air, drink a beer, slurp oysters while you wait for a text message. The bar is part of their wait list. Okay. Food. The the walnut encrusted halibut is the best we've ever eaten. Moist, tender, and slightly underdone. Restaurants, even "top" ones, tend to overcook halibut. It is a delicate flesh and should be treated with a gentle touch. We've eaten LOTS of halibut. Is it worth a 2 hour wait? NO. The pistachio encrusted halibut was also delicious, again moist, tender and slightly undercooked. The bed of wheat berries and I think cubed european cucumber it was lounging upon was a lazy garnish and didn't pair well at all. The roasted corn cake paired with the walnut halibut was sumptous...buttery, crispy brown on the outside, creamy on the inside. The avocado puree and zuchini strip at least showed some effort. Dessert was cream cheese ice cream with bacon bits. Cream cheese ice cream was a new treat for us. A zippy, slightly sour, tangy , rich, just like cold cream cheese but with a velvety texture. The bacon bits provided a slightly smoky salty finish. Over all? The halibut and the ice cream were worth the money we spent. The wait? No.

Anna Krawczyk

Delicious food, everything from starters to the main course was beautifuly served and tasted fantastic. You definitely have to try cream cheese ice cream for dessert, it blew our minds.

Matthew Bigman

Fantastic local cuisine with reasonable prove, the Cookery is a fantastic spot to get multi course meals which leave you satisfied, not stuff. Attentive and knowledgeable servers help guide you through the ever changing menu. The one downside is the price, but the taste is well worth admission.

Paul Steele

Great food and service by a Seward local icon. The cookery has great meals and beverages and the service from friendly staff who seem genuinely happy to see you and serve you! The food is very good but we did find the prices a little high, but it is Alaska!

Junli Zhong

Fresh oysters, halibut and scallops were good. Halibut special could be more seasoned otherwise good service! There was a line outside before it opened at 5pm, it lived up to its hype

Michael Hall

A truly wonderful experience. Great service and the halibut was to die for. I would definitely visit this restaurant again!

Candice Henderson

The cookery was highly recommended by local residents. However, the halibut and shrimp and grits was average.

Ginnie Joubert

I adore this place so much! Very modern atmosphere with a rotating menu! Check out their Facebook ahead of time to see what they are serving! These scallops in a bbq beer sauce was PHENOMENAL. We also had pecan crusted halibut.. DELICIOUS. Seward has my heart and I WILL back to not only Seward but also to The Cookery because I would love to try everything on the menu! Definitely check this place out!

Charles Campbell

Great food in a place with great atmosphere. Believe the hype and get here early to get a seat. No reservations.

Fengbo

Very delicious food and nice service. Expect to wait We got there before 5 pm, but there were a line of more than 20 people already.

Konstantin Ivlev

The best salmon and halibut I’ve ever tried.

Shyzeus Mitbbs

We ordered 4 dishes, but none was tasty. Disappointed.

Michelle Sturgeon

A culinary experience that would rival New York!

Mandy Broyden

Limited menu that is set each week, but fantastic food and a vegetarian option. The salads are a good and well balanced meal, with different textures and tastes (apple, soft cheese, vinaigrette). The kitchen is surrounded by the bar in …

Sam Tucker

Up close and personal with chefs who know exactly what they're doing. This restaurant may very well validate driving from Anchorage to Seward on its own. For a pescatarian such as myself, the menu is very accessible and we were not disappointed with any of our choices -- the house bread, incredible oysters, vegetable poutine, creole stew, fresh halibut, and the chocolate "charcuterie" dessert. I will definitely return on my next trip to Alaska, and can recommend to everyone who can make the drive!

Marc Krolikowski

Food is good but pretty pricey. Restaurant has a nice touch. Probably one of the best addresses in seward. Unfortunately no WiFi inside.

Michael Yadron

Outstanding food and staff! I come to this place every time I'm in Seward. 10/10 would reccomend.

Jared McCullough

Beat food experience in Seward. Hands down. Yes, their fish and oysters are amazing. Actually, everything here is well done. Just what you'd expect from a star chef. But the prize here is the homemade cream cheese and bacon ice cream. Extensive drink menu and cozy ambience. One of Alaska's best restaurants.

Michael Boogaart

Great place with fun atmosphere. Great mac and cheese.

What a fantastic surprise!! This was easily the best dinner I had on a recent AK trip, and I ate at a lot of great restaurants. I stopped here for dinner on a whim after a long day of hiking because it was directly across from my hotel, and boy am I glad I did! I arrived at 9pm (which still feels early under Alaska's summer sun), and it was still packed. I was able to get seated at the bar right away, but be forewarned there is often a wait and they do not take reservations. It is worth the wait! Ambiance is great, very lively without being too loud. What I really care about though is the food, and it honestly blew me away. I travel a lot for business, and as such eat at a lot of highly acclaimed restaurants, and still this meal was more satisfying than any I've had in recent memory. I had the salmon, which was grilled perfectly with a crisp skin and very tender, served on a zucchini hash that I WISH I knew how to make, it was so good. Followed that with house made cream cheese ice cream with balsamic reduction, strawberries and bacon crumbles (why not!). What a decedent and lovely dish! Prices were fair, and service at the bar was prompt and friendly. I cannot wait to go back!! PS because the same chef runs two Seward restaurants, so after this meal I had to go to their sister restaurant Lone Chicharron the next day for some excellent tacos. Go to both when in Seward, you won't regret it!

Joy Turner

We ate here while we were visiting Seward. It was the best meal we had there!!! Highly recommend the halibut and fried chicken.

Ankita Sood

Really nice unique food options, the best what we had in Alaska till date. Will come back again during our stay. Must visit

Doreen Blake

Delicious food. Next time I will definitely booked earlier.

Caroline Roettger

A rare dining experience. The food was amazing, the service divine. I wish I lived close enough to eat here regularly.

David Johnson Jr

Yummy! Had the chicken. Large portions

Melissa Penton

The food was amazing! We had the Halibut and the chicken. We highly recommend!!

Doug Stucki

Lives up to the reputation. Definitely worthy of five stars. I was told that the plates are small, but I found the portions to be more than adequate. I had the brisket, which was cooked to pull-apart perfection. Everything was full of flavor and the service was amazing. All of thr staff were attentive and friendly. I'll be back.

LM Cox

Best food we have had here all week and we have eaten almost everywhere! Great food, good wine! We tried to go twice before to get in, but was always a 90 minute wait...the hostess doesn't do a good job of telling people that they can put …

James Myhre

Wow! Best place in Seward, hands down! This would be a hit in any big city. To find it in a tiny place like Seward is a minor miracle. Halibut and salmon are standouts. Great, friendly service. Hank was fantastic.

Rupika Chatterjee

Loved the food and ambience of this place, it's definitely a must visit when in Seward. Their Dutch Baby Pancake is a must-have!

Brandon Seay

Food and service were great. Skipped the Rueben today for the special and the Chicken pot pie did not disappoint!

Chris Poos

Very impressive restaurant!!! We’ve been in Alaska for two weeks and have had many great meals but this place takes the cake!!! Hands down best place we’ve eaten in Alaska. Try the Dutch Baby and Cheese Cake Ice cream. We also had the Almond crusted Halibut and Brussels side, and they were both great!!!

Tim Jones

Food was very good and service was good.

Sierra Mills

This was seriously one of the two best restaurants in Alaska. I have lived in AK for nearly six years (in anchorage) and this restaurant was truly delightful! The atmosphere was modern and inviting, the service was professional- both knowledgeable And kind, and the food was not only creative, beautiful, delicious and also affordable. I cold go on and on... I will definitely be back.

Danielle AndBill

Had a delicious Halibut dinner, with a Brussels Sprout appetizer and an amazing dessert of Cream Cheese ice cream with balsamic glaze and bacon bits on the side. So savory & sweet ~ recommend by the bartender Tim, probably wouldn't have tried it without his suggestion. Thanks Tim!!

Vickie Beusse

Great food and great atmosphere! A favorite place of mine!

Don Moore

I have never had ice cream that smooth or creamy before. Ever. Better than gelato hands down

Marilee Davieau

Delicious food, pleasant atmosphere. Smallish menu, but everything on it is interesting, fresh, and made with great expertise and care!

Jason Brown

I have now eaten here twice for lunch and have thoroughly enjoyed each lunch. They serve a bacon cheeseburger everyday, which my wife has named one of the best, if not the best, restaurant burgers she has eaten. The real interesting play …

Jack Long

Great salmon and halibut dishes. However my favorite dish was the charcuterie chocolate dessert plate.

Zack Barnes

Good food. Good service.

Katherine Lewis

Quite good food. One of Seward's more upscale restaurant options, so the price is more than surrounding places and worth knowing going in. Good selection and options and definitely worth going.

Phil

I had grilled salmon and it was close to medium but tender while vegetables were cooked just right. Another guest had the NY strip steak cooked medium rare which was close to medium. Was not as flavorful as those he is familiar with from steakhouses in Houston TX. The server was attentive and friendly. Given this place was packed and required a 30-45 minute wait before seating. It was a good plus rating. Similar to other 4.1+ Star ratings of other restaurants in Seward. We did not drink any alcoholic beverages so cannot comment on beers and wine.

Kelly Zeh

Fantastic meal. Really enjoyed this restaurant.

Sharon Campbell

Great service and wonderful food!

Wes Erikson

Really great food, arrive early for a table

Martin Watson

Excellent restaurant with phenomenal service. This place would be good anywhere so it’s great to see such ambition a little off the beaten path.

Andrew Hopper

Incredible food, but the service was very slow and I felt like the waiter was more of a sales man than a waiter. Twice we told them no dessert menu and that we were ready for our check, but somehow he still came around with a dessert menu to explain every item on it and tell us how much we were missing out. Don't expect to get out of here for less than $70 either.

Richard Kuechle

It's an awesome place to get togethers with friends and family

Aman Rossing

We live on the west coast and have access to fresh seafood, but tonight's dinner was the best piece of halibut I've ever tasted. It was perfectly cooked, juicy and flakey and not over cooked. The prawns and grits had a great balance of flavors with the right amount of spice, and the cream cheese ice cream was the perfect dessert to end the meal.

jarod powell

The oysters were fantastic , the fried chicken was also very good. It seems the fried chicken is a local favorite! Was recommended by friends and stranger's alike !! Not disappointed with my dinner here at all . I would eat here again

shafagh kamkar

Visited Seward for the 4th of July week. Hands down one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. Ate there twice. Would’ve eaten there every meal if they were open. The mushroom toast is to die for!

Will Bernstein

One of the best meals of my life. Food was perfect and service was impeccable. I had the chicken and it was the best chicken I've ever had, also had the scallop app, cashew app, and soup of the (Alaskan Steak with Rye berry). Scallops were perfectly cooked and prepared and I'm seriously picky about over cooking scallops as it's easy to do. Had the Dutch Baby for dessert with cream cheese ice cream (tastes like cheesecake). The ice cream was beyond smooth and creamy but thick and decadent. The two other people I was dining with loved their entrees and didn't have one bad thing to say about their meal. I wish this restaurant was in Denver but I'm also glad it isn't as I wouldn't eat anywhere else again.

Dan McConville

If in, or near Seward, go here. You will not be disappointed.

Aaron Miller

This place came with high reviews, but I was not overly impressed. Service was good, beer was good, and the fresh oysters were good. However the highly anticipated crusted halibut and smoked salmon dishes were only okay.

Lisa Saraos

I liked sitting at the bar...interactive and fun, chatting with the bartender and appetizer chefs...front row seat, watching them cook up magic. Mushroom toast was delish!

Maureen MacDonald

Amazing food! I had the salmon, and it was easily one of the best salmons I've had - and I say that despite being a lifelong Pacific Northwesterner.

Malinda Patterson

Very good! The halibut was excellent. Definitely recommend the Cookery.

Laura Schoen

This is how a restaurant should be run. Has a great vibe, and the food is excellent. Summer Cobb salad, the Brussels, the Sablefish dip, the ice cream with bacon and balsamic, the warm cashews, the crab cakes, loved them all.

Ryan Jones

Food and service was fantastic 11 out of 10 would recommend

Alberto Fernandez Perez

One of the best restaurants we have been in Alaska so far!!

Jeff Gottdownunder

Hands down my best meal in Alaska (from Denali, Seward, homer, Anchorage). Ingredients are fresh and dishes are creative. There is a reason for the long wait.

Jennifer Huang

Great food n service. Go early or might wait a long time. Lavender mamosa was a perfect match with the food.

Monty Fisher

Excellent food! Great service! Halibut was fresh, light and fluffy.

Shuai Jiang

We went around 5:30 and the place was already packed. They do not accept reservations so either to ready to wait a bit or come early. The benefit of going early is that oyster happy hours are from 5 to 6 where oysters are half price. The oysters were very fresh and you can really taste the difference in them. I really liked the ones coming from Homer. The salmon dish was fantastic, the halibut dish was fresh but average (it could be that I don't like halibut that much). The best dish was actually the special pork tasting dish consisting of pork belly with a delicious yam puree. Cream cheese ice cream was also excellent (do consider adding bacon, it's interesting). Only qualm is that the service was a bit slow at the beginning.

Debi Milham

Great service! And check out this fresh halibut. Delicious!!

Erich Hurst

Excellent food. The place is a little crowded, and with the recent heat wave it could have used some air conditioning, but who cares, the food is just that good. We had the grilled salmon and the steak. Both were cooked beautifully with a ton of flavor.

lewis kelley

Really great locally sourced seafood. Maybe the best scallops I've ever eaten.

Mary Colleen Horan

Food was incredible and the people there could not have been nicer

Julie Masters

The energy of the people here is very good, and so is the food!

Richard Boitnott

If you are looking for a great place to eat in Seward, you can't go wrong with this place. Great oysters to start with, then great salmon and halibut. Great service too. Highly recommended.

Dustin Sharstrom

Best place in Seward! All around great.

Leah Scherr

Fresh, cooked to perfection. Lots of locals there, their favorite too.

Hannah Szabo

My family and I had wonderful experience at The Cookery! Matt out waiter was attentive but gave us plenty of time to have conversation. The chef and staff accommodated my husbands dietary needs 100%. All the food pair well with every part of the dish and came at an easy pace. If you have time to stop in and enjoy the fun artwork it worth the wait!

Adam Lewis

Great fine dining experience. Good selection of wine. Diverse and tasty menu options. Accommodated my wife's dietary limitations well and swiftly.

Nick Peak

Casual atmosphere; sophisticated dishes. The halibut was flawless and the chef's lingcod special made great use of seasonal vegetables. Treat yourself to dinner here. You wont be disappointed.

Priyanka Bhattacharya

The seasonal fish dishes are excellent! It was the first time I had Lingcod and I loved it. So was their unique chocolate dessert! Friendly staff is a plus!
