When you drive 3 hours down a dead end dirt road, then walk 20 minutes to get to town, you might expect a bit of price gouging. Not here! The food was great, and the prices very reasonable. It was a nice way to end a fantastic day touring the area.

This has been a local treasure for many years. It started in a trailer and now is a full on restaurant and pub. The great thing about the transition is that it has not lost its funky flavor. We went as a large group so I got to try most of the small menu. Of course start with a basket of the addictive fries. We had plain and rosemary garlic. Both delicious. The Potato is deep inside the beautiful and rugged Wrangell mountains and hanging out in the area will make you hungry. The portions served will not disappoint. I had the special, chicken enchiladas. 2 Well seasoned large chunks of chicken in a not too spicy sauce, sour cream and guac on the side. Their Potatohead burrito was ordered by many at the table and it is perfect after a long day of scrabbeling over mountains. This monster has fries, eggs, salsa, peppers and if you want add some pulled pork. It will satisfy. Other items included fish and chips, bangers and mash and of course in a youthful place like McCarthy Alaska, tacos. The selection of beers is very good with some draft available. I really liked the many cider choices. Prices are reasonable for this deep in the back country and they accept cash and cards.

Pretty typical high quality cafe with food, coffee, beer which is all the more impressive considering it is essentially in the middle of nowhere! Lots of seating, inside and out. Beautiful artwork on the walls. Free water (you can refill your water) and normal (i.e. running water) bathrooms. For some reason the picture of Robert Plant on stage with led Zeppelin in the bathroom seemed perfect Great place to mix with locals and travelers. They have music sometimes and while I was there an impromptu violin concerto broke out

Naturally, when there is a special, you absolutely must get it. Just to see what the chef dreamt up. And this creation did not disappoint! This perfectly cooked morsel of salmon is perched atop a bed of beets, potatoes, and black garlic mustard sauce. Omg. So good. My companion got the fish and chips. I was all like, really girl, fish and chips? But she enjoyed them and they looked crispy and tasty. Our server was fantastic. Make sure you eat here.

There aren't a ton of choices for eats in McCarthy, but even with limited options, The Potato hits it out of the park. So many great menu options, including an egg/potato burrito, which was outstanding. This menu is eclectic and creative while embracing the role of the potato as part of a meal, including fantastic French fries. After spending a day exploring Kennecott or walking on the Root Glacier, hang out on the patio with a craft beer (many Alaska offerings available), easy some yummy food and enjoy all of this from the middle of nowhere.
