Exceptional food, exceptional service! The BBQ side and small plate side of the restaurant are both phenomenal. Happy hour is also a great deal!
The service and atmosphere is nice, but if you are searching for tasty authentic korean food this is not the place to go!
$30 for 3 slice of beef with bone in. $25 for 3 slice of pork belly
Interesting menu, service was forgetful.
Tasty. Surprisingly authentic. Sizeable portions.
We very much enjoyed our experience here, given the fact that it was our first time indulging in Korean Barbecue. For ~$70 (before tip) we ordered 4 beers, kimchi fried rice, and beef brisket (with bottomless complimentary add-on’s). Each dish is adequately serves two portions, so this is definitely intended for groups of 2 or more. The FOH staff were very helpful and personable, being that it was our first time experiencing Korean BBQ they helped guide us through the preparation of the meat. The kimchi fried rice phenomenal complimented the beef brisket; no dish here lacks flavor.

It’s great place . Food was fresh and delicious . Thank you to the workers for being so friendly and cool . Defanatly coming back
The cocktails are like asian twists of classics, which is really awesome and something I've never seen before. I didn't really like their wings (the sauces in particular), but everything else was great, especially the bulgogi and japchae. The staff and bartender were super friendly and made great conversation while we waited at the bar. There's a back seating area by the bar that's pretty cute, but there weren't any grills there so I'm not sure if they seat people there normally. There also isn't a lot of seating, but it's worth waiting for!
Great marinades, fat pork belly, and great service!! This location also has a lot of natural sun light and parking in the back! Great place for family and friends!
So good.
Food was good one of the servers had a terrible attitude
San Soo looks great. The bar has been moved to the back room. The main room is industrial chic. Rows of hot plate tables to cook you'r own Korean BBQ. Lots of servers roam the room. Your greeted immediately you go through the front door. I went straight from the office without a reservation. A really bad move if you want to eat at a table with a hot plate. Which looked a lot of fun. But a 40 minute wait. However there is another option. All the high top tables and 2 seat tables do not have hot plates. So you can't cook your own. But to my mind that's not a bad thing. We were seated immediately. Had the dumplings. Half pork, half veg. Korean pork and a beef hot bowl. They were great. Flavorful. Service was slick and efficient. Cocktails, wine, bottled and draught beers. Some nice offerings. Be aware there is no parking. A whole new eating experience. San Soo is a great addition to River North. I highly recommend giving it a try.
The food is good. I'd like more detail on the sides and condiments though. Get the bulgogi.
Best kbbq I've had in Chicago. I would definitely check out the kimchi pancakes. The ones here blew all the other kimchi pancakes I've ever had out of the water.
A bit pricey but very good
Interesting experience in cooking your food. Will definitely come back.
I had a dinner at San Soo on 6/22 and am quite disappointed. We ordered feast menu. 1) Some dumplings are cold inside. 2) Server didn't control fire well in the beginning and burnt some meat. They were too busy to serve several tables. 3) We ordered soybean stew but we didn't get until we finished all other food. We asked several times but the server said it would come out soon. And, it is funny, instead they brought kimchi stew, at the end. We rejected and they apologized. Even they said they will handle this. But, still final bill didn't deduct the soybean stew. We paid all. This is my first review for a restaurant in Yelp. I visited this restaurant because of its good review, so decided to spend time to write this review to help others make good choice in future. Please avoid this restaurant.
Best modern Korean-American restaurant in Chicagoland!!
Good food but expensive. Can find similar for less
This upscale iteration on San Soo Gab San delivers on delicious Korean BBQ, drinks, and great service. There was a slight mixup with our reservation for our group of 10 on a busy weekend night, but the GM quickly adapted, seated us, and comped an appetizer. The food was all top notch and I look forward to returning.
Outstanding food and service in a comfortable, modern dining room. Loved the Kalbi and the hot stone rice bowls. Lots of vegetarian options which was great for my group. It was all the fun of a hot pot restaurant, but grilled meat>boiled meat. This was my first K Bbq and I’ll be back.
Just don't go, there's other places that'll cost less and you'll actually enjoy the food. Go eat at a Korean BBQ buffet your experience will be better. My main complaint is price. If you don't believe me go there and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Great food! Our server Chris was SUCH a hunk ;)
Very friendly and a huge tasty side dishes
Great experience get a group and go. Good for adventurous dates too.
Great food and service with a modern atmosphere.
Best kbbq I've ever had. Can't recommend this place enough.
Food is top notch...service is amazing...I’ve gone back to back to back days to eat...my favorite Korean BBQ place by a mile!
HORRIBLE SERVICE
Outstanding food and delicious! Excited to have a great Korean restaurant in the neighborhood
Good quality food but definitely lacking flavor compared to traditional Korean food. I appreciate that they don't go over board on salt, but the umami was still lacking.
Food is totally different taste of Korean. Too salty! And most above all, service was awful. Foods came out so lately and server(?) didn't know how to cook meats so we did by ourselves. Food was not so good so even i didn't take pictures!
Visualization is not important. And, The dish is so unprofessional.
A friend suggested this place and I went and had a great meal I will be visiting again.
From the moment I walked in the staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and very flavorful. I am happy to see something new and different compared to your traditional West Loop restaurants. Chris Kim made me feel very welcome by inviting me for a shot haha I will be back again!!
Delicious, thoughtfully prepared traditional Korean food with a modern twist. Creative and delicious handcrafted cocktails. Great outdoor lounge with a beautiful Michelle Obama mural. A must visit!
This spot provides wonderful service and delightful food. One of the best spot in town. The food arrived quick and the rates were affordable. Will definitely recommend this restaurant.

For those confused - Perilla took over the location of San Doo K BBQ. Plus, it services similar food...so it’s confusing. But it IS a new place under new management. Food ordered: 1. Marinated Prime Ribeye: literally melts in your mouth. The meat is super tender and the marinade is light and not overbearing so you can enjoy the taste of the meat. It’s also served with a lettuce basket and dipping sauce so you can make ssam and enjoy it authentic korean bbq style. 2. Kimchi Stew 3. Sauteed Brussels Sprouts: SO GOOD. It’s definitely a must try. It’s a completely new flavor and texture profile from any “Asian fusion” restaurants. They add crispy garlic - yum! It’s savory, light, nutty (almost) - you just have to try it. 4. Cheese Corn: has cojita cheese in it and reminds me of a light elote. 5. Steamed egg (I didn’t order but shout out to the manager for giving us on the house!): THIS IS THE HIDDEN GEM. it’s not like a traditional steamed egg served in most korean restaurants. Check out my photo and video of it. You must try!! The food and service were on point! There’s also a korean beer list which is a fun pairing with the food. The portion sizes are generous (I definitely over ordered) but so well worth it. It’s a good dining experience for both “seasoned” korean bbq-ers and newbies. The manager and owner both dropped by frequently to check in on us and made us feel so well taken care of.
I can't speak to the quality of their food, but this business has awful service and organization. I ordered food from them on Grubhub. 1.5 hours later they called me and said my "food had been stolen" and that it I "would not be getting my food". True to their word, I never received my food, nor did they offer to make up for it. Based on this experience, don't waste your time and money here.
Incredible spot. A must go.
(Translated by Google) I made marbled, kimchi, and egg steamed ... Kimchi was a little panicked because it was not the taste I usually eat at a Korean restaurant. And when I ate a barbecue, I ate vegetables (salads?) That came with me, and then I added $ 4 to the bill. Usually, Korean restaurants do not charge extra for me to order more dishes. Anyway, the food is Korean food, but I feel it is not Korean restaurant.
Nice and tasty Korean food
Spectacular Korean BBQ! Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, food is beyond amaxing - you'll love this place!
We had the Brussels sprouts, mandu, bulgogi, and kalbi - it was all excellent. Perilla is vying for our top pick for Korean BBQ in Chicago.
The meat quality is not that good. The banchan too. But young people like it.maybe atmosphere...
I had a great time at Sansoo yesterday. I had heard from friends they had a rough start, but after changing some things internally and getting a new chef, I think they’ve turned it into a great local Korean destination. I love this because most other Korean spots are far up north and it’s a hassle to get up there. Their grilled pork dish, egg appetizer dish and kimchi soup are solid. The Ribeye in my opinion was the standout item and of very high quality. Not to mention the service was excellent. I’ll be back soon!
Portions are small as hell. Paid way to much. I don't recommend it, you'll definitely be disappointed and that's a promise!
Service was awesome. Food was amazing. Had an amazing time with my friends. Definitely check it out!
Excellent, tasty food. Good portions, spicy like we like it. Good service, and atmosphere.
Gyu KaWHO? This place is the best. Great date spot. Great spot for friends. Great spot to bring your mom or your friends mom. 10/10. Check it out.
The restaurant has a really nice vibe and it was extremely quiet when I went. Our server was really really friendly and recommended some good stuff for us. As usual all the side dishes are provided and (all the ones I ate) tasted great! We also gobbled up the Kimchi Pancake pretty quickly after it was served. The actual BBQ meats themselves we're pretty good too. Good place to hang and just eat with friends :)
Dinner with work colleagues. Beef was pretty good. Service was a little patchy - had to remind the wait staff for the routine side dishes
Delicious, thoughtfully prepared traditional Korean food with a modern twist. Creative and delicious handcrafted cocktails. Great outdoor lounge with a beautiful Michelle Obama mural. A must visit!
Great atmosphere and vibes, creative foods that are traditional for the most part, yet the smallest American twist. Very tastefully made, plus the new Michelle Obama mural on the side of the restaurant is stunning! :)
Food was good. Just a little surprised that I got an up charged for "rocks" with my whiskey....
This spot provides wonderful service and delightful food. One of the best spot in town. The food arrived quick and the rates were affordable. Will definitely recommend this restaurant.
Food is nasty raw meat was brown and green smelled very nasty. Owners/mangers are racist always arguring with employees so unprofessional!! Grills are very nasty food tasted like soap!!! Do not come here its just a waist of money !!!!!!
San Soon Gap San is one of my go-tos in Koreatown. But, to me, its sister eatery in River East is an over-Westernized version of a Korean bbq restaurant, and a bit too trendy and loud. (Conversation is challenging when the place is full.) The prices are on the high end, particularly compared to Koreatown restaurants, which are considerably more reasonably priced. (Our bill came out to more than $300 for five people.) I would’ve liked to have seen more banchan — a measure of a kitchen’s skill and a hallmark of Korean-style generosity/hospitality when it comes to food. But San Soo Korean BBQ would be a good introduction to Korean food for the curious-minded, especially because the staff speaks English.
Dove headfirst into the Large Feast with two friends. We had the scallion pancake, sautéed brusselsprouts, pork dumplings, soy marinated mushrooms, Korean fried chicken, and the unmarinated short rib and pork belly. The banchan were delightful and the house ssamjang was great.
Loved the ambience; food reasonably priced; smell of chocolate at the entrance was irresistable
If you want something new, something with flavor & great staff then this should be your go to place in Chicago, with foods that you’d think you’d never eat but cannot stop consuming after your trip here. With a patio in the back for you to enjoy your breezy days or hot summer ones, a fire place to warm up at night, & not to mention the amazing portrait of Michelle Obama in the back. Curious? Come in when you got a chance.
Very good food and great service!
Delicious and unique food with a matching atmosphere. I highly recommend and cannot wait to go back!
Absolutely horrible service. Waited 15 minutes and a waiter never showed up to attend us. Different waiters came to say someone will attend us shortly but no one ever came. The restuarant was not even busy either.
The food of this restaurant is similar to that of Korea.
There is a Korean restaurant and free side dishes.
(Translated by Google) It is Korean restaurant, but it is different from the general Korean restaurant. ㅎ The staffs were friendly and the meat was delicious, too. (Original) 한국식당인데 일반적인 한국식당하고 분위기가 달라요ㅎㅎ 직원들도 친절하고 고기도 맛있었는데 계란찜에서 좀 탄맛이 나서 아쉬웠어요~
I'll give this a 4 star just because, but honestly, it could have been 5 if it wasn't for a few things. The menu is really limited, I was hoping for a larger variety, like the other locations. This one has a very limited Korean BBQ menu, as well as sub-par side dishes that come along with the KBBQ. The service was definitely impeccable and spot on. One of the things contributing to the lack of a complete 5 star review was the Kimchi Fried Rice. The rice was definitely way too soggy. My friend and I left it to sit in the stone bowl for a bit longer and it still didn't get crispy enough. I don't recommend their Fire Chicken. It's just cubed dark meat chicken tossed in hot sauce with some cheese. The grill gets burnt way too fast and there's no vents above you to intake the smoke. There are vents around the ceiling, but very sparingly placed.
Good food and atmosphere, but a bit pricier than comparable places I've been to.
Amazing service and food. We had a big group for a birthday and it ended being the perfect place.
My food and overall experience was amazing nicest Korean bbq spot in Chicago. There banchan was the bomb
overall good taste and nice guys.
It was delicious. Everything was great. Such a great place for a group and very accomadating. Service was superb and the food was amazing. Went with a group of 7 and ordered so many great dishes. I will definately recommend and i will be back!
A fav spot for delicious Korean food. I love snacking here. Looking forward to coming back with my friends. Bring your hunger - portions are large.
First time at Korean BBQ. Amazing experience! Joe was a great server. He made the experience quick and effortless.
Delicious. Great for date night!
Bad food.awful service!
Really good food and service. Try the chicken wings! Yum!
Really bad food and service. Long story if you want to hear about it. We were told that if we ordered the non bbq dish we'll get seated right away. A guy escorted us to the bar area in the back as if there were seats available. When we got there he didn't see any availability so he said sorry we don't have seats. You guys can just stand by the bar and order drinks first. After explaining to us, he turned around and said oh look a seat opened up. He just gave us the menu and we were left to head towards where he pointed to the available area which had NO seats just bar tables. We had to take a chair from the people sitting next to us and it was only one chair. But we were left to organize our "eating" area. We took the paper towels and utensils from nearby tables and had to steal another chair from another table for our two top. Truly self service or bad service??? We ordered kimchi stew and bean paste stew. Kimchi stew was like literally someone dumping kimchi in and diluted it with water. What about seasoning?? Can you source better kimchi for the soup? Bean paste stew was the WORST. It was so salty that it was inedible. I had to dilute the stew with my drinking water. Even so it was still so salty that I just gave up and scooped out the veggies to eat. Someone didn't measure their miso paste right! It doesn't have to be authentic it just has to taste good. Which this place fails horribly. Husband said at least kimchi stew still tasted better than H-mart which meant it was edible but it's not Cho Sun Ok level if you know what I mean. On top of that I informed the waitress that the soup was salty because she asked how everything was. She kindly apologized and said she'll inform the chef (it was her first day at the restaurant so I was being pretty calm about expressing how salty it was). She later came back and told me that the manager is waiting for me at the bar if I would like to speak with him. Wow! Not blaiming the new waitress because she was pleasant but shouldn't the manager come to me to apologize for the salty soup???? It sounded like I was called in for a trouble that I had caused. At this point I was extremely peeved. I asked for the check, paid for everything, and tipped like normal. Did not stop at the bar to talk to the manager because they don't deserve to hear my feedback at the restaurant if they don't make the effort to drop by to talk about their horrible food.
The staff was very welcoming and efficient. The food was delicious. We ordered different plates and definitely had enough. The food was delicious! It has a nice aesthetic. They mostly played kpop songs in the background.
Super expensive, food was alright
Being familiar with korean culture and food. I have never ever had a complaint about any korean restaurant. Being from NYC and having lived and worked in Seoul. It has always been an incredible experience. Travel to Chicago for work and was craving to try a korean restaurant here. Googled it. Looked good. Walked in the door. No acknowledgment. Escorted to a table. No acknowledgment from the korean waiters. A few minutes later the non Korean host approached me to see if I was ready to order. I asked for a soju. He had no idea what it was Since he said “ I don’t drink so I don’t know what it is. “ He came back with a story that they ran out of soju. Had never heard this before in my lifetime. At this point I was ready to bail out. Decided to stay and order a traditional hot pot binbibop. Which I kid you not. It come out 3 minutes after I ordered it. Was it just sitting there. The small dishes arrived later. Usually if ordered in a hot pot. It would be extremely hot. Can’t even touch it. This one warm. I have to admit. The only non korean waiter was extremely attentive after he noticed my discomfort. Also not crowded with plenty open tables. So that’s not an excuse. I’m not a complainer and this is my first negative review of a korean restaurant. Will never suggest this place. Thank god I live in nyc and travel often to Seoul.
Good Korean BBQ at a reasonable price for the area
The staff was nice and attentive. The new way of cooking so it doesn't make your clothes smell of smoke works well. Food was delicious.
If you want something new, something with flavor & great staff then this should be your go to place in Chicago, with foods that you’d think you’d never eat but cannot stop consuming after your trip here. Good stuff!
Good service and food. Definately a bit on the pricey end for korean bbq. Usually when you order a la carte it is 2 servings, but here it is for 1 serving. (We didnt order a la carte but it said it is for 1 person on the menu) There is a "feast for 2" and "feast for 4" that is a better deal. There is a chance you can get seated at the same table with a different party already there. Not a big deal, but would have preferred sitting at our own table. They also ran out of perilla (sesame) leaves. We only got 1 for the table and the lettuce they had was way too small to properly make a lettuce wrap with the meat. The best part of the meal for me was the roasted asparagus. Food is good but imho not worth the price. There are kbbq places just as good but much cheaper. Although the price could reflect the location of the restaurant. Giving it 4 stars just because the only complaint I have is the price. (And running out of perilla leaves).
Highly recommend this place!!!! Good vibe and super good food
I certainly love their dishes and customer service, fantastic location nearby to where I live. The employees are always very friendly. I highly recommend this place.
Unbelievable service and food
The food was delicious and the staff was was really nice. It was a great time. If you've never done it before your server is willing to help you. All in all great time.
(Translated by Google) This restaurant is amazing. Nice staff. Delicious food. I tried to go to Chosun-ok and eat bibim noodle but it was not until the 9th of the afternoon. It is really delicious. Although I do not have cold noodles, other foods are really delicious. Japchae. I'm. meat. Bibimbap is good and the price is good. The staff is really friendly !! I want to come again. I am hesitant because I have a bad rating at first, but it is really good! (Original) This restaurant is amazing. Nice staff. Delicious food.
Awesome vibe - great cocktail menu as well. Food and atmosphere was amazing. Looking for a low key place and friendly staff this is the place to come.
Ahhh mazing
Good variety and flavors very modern Korean-American food. Staff is nice and helpful. It can get pretty noisy on a weekend.
Friendly host and servers. Magnificent mural of Michelle Obama in a hanbok on the outside wall!! But pricey for Korean food. I only had the fried chicken, and it was good, but not worth $15 (7 pieces). Verdict: SAVE YOUR $ and eat Korean food elsewhere.
Great food! Great staff! I wasn't expecting much since I'm Korean and I've been to many different Korean restaurants so I thought it was going to be a typical Korean restaurant. I was wrong. Our server was so friendly. One of the owner came by to talk to us and asked us how we liked our food. This almost never happens in a Korean restaurant, unless you're in a small mom and pop type of restaurant. One of our friend was vegan and I was a bit worried that she might not find anything to eat but she found many options and she loved it. It was her 1st time trying Korean food. Kimchee was authentic and so delicious. Best of all, our beef was so good! I also liked the the seating arrangements. We were seated on a long table, like a long picnic table. We would definitely come back again soon.
AMAZING MEATS AND AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE. Super friendly and welcoming staff. Loved how they are very attentive here too. As soon as you’re done they are ready to serve your next dish!! 10/10 highly recommend especially as a first time visitor to Chicago!! Great dining experience overall.
Don't skip on: the Corn, Brussel sprouts, glass noodles, asparagus, oh wait, everything was delicious and you should go soon.
Really great Korean BBQ restaurants in a cool setting.
Good variety and flavors very modern Korean-American food. Staff is nice and helpful. It can get pretty noisy on a weekend.
(Translated by Google) It's not as juicy as Korea. It's a lot of popularity. (Original) 한국에서만큼 육즙이 풍부하지 않아요.인기는 많아요
Amazing food!! Highly recommend the shared feast! Was impressed and will be back
Everything was great!!
The most Americanized Korean BBQ I've ever had. Banchan severely lacking. No garlic. Looked at me funny when I asked for doenjang jigae.
I went there with my husband, my brother and my mom. We ordered the $120 set menu for 4. I appreciated that we could customize it! Everything we had today was very flavorful. Personally I thought the brussels and the soup were a bit too salty. The Bulgogi was a little soggy somehow. Everything else was OK. I’m not sure, maybe because I live very close to Glenview where there are a lot of great Korean restaurants, I wasn’t amazed by the food. I liked the modern touch but I felt like it was too leaning toward traditional style. Usually when I go to a traditional Korean restaurant there are always a lot of Koreans eating there. I was very pleasantly surprised by the the diversity of crowd. Catering to the young people downtown I think the food could be more adventurous! Anyway, I would have given a 4.5 stars if there’s an option. The amount of food we got for $120 was pretty impressive. We couldn’t finish and had to take some home. The service was great and staff very friendly!
This place is just awesome. Great food and service. Can’t wait to go again!
Hi, I’d like to commend Thomas and the service team. I ordered an item on Grubhub that did not list that it included pork. I called San soo, they refunded it and were very kind.
Every serving hits the spot, damn good food. Come hungry...
Perilla is awesome. Their take on Korean American food is delicious. We did KBBQ with the a la carte meats. The meats were great quality. We also got the brussel sprouts. It has to be one of the best brussel sprout dishes I've ever had. Their side dishes were also good. We got at least 3 refills of them all. Please note that this place used to be San Soo KBBQ. There are still many reviews prior to July 2019 for San Soo.
Nice Korean restaurant Best in the down town Chicago

Food is OK. But the phone number on google is not reachable. Also they don’t value online orders
Very enjoyable!
Wow. That is all I have to say. The restaurant is amazing the staff is ultra and the food is EPIC. Must stop must try much greatness
Went with a large group and had an amazing time. Food was unreal! We shared all of our dishes so I was able to try plenty of options and everyone was amazing. The service was great, very prompt. I will back for birthdays, anniversaries, and pretty much anytime I'm in the city
We came here for dinner on Valentine's day with an advance reservation. Very chic decor! They had a special Valentine's day menu ($75 for 2) but we ordered from the regular menu and it was great! Good variety of kimchi bites and meat. The seafood pancake was made to perfection! We also enjoyed the hot bulgogi stone bowl though it could have been spicier. Something that really made the difference for me is that they cook the meat for you on the grill right there in front of you (as opposed to us having to grill it ourselves). We had the pork belly done this way and it was amazing! Kudos to the fast service and our server Norrell! By the time we were done with our dishes and the myriad sides, we were full to the rim! Definitely one of my most enjoyable BBQ experiences!
Food was amazing and service was very helpful and fast! We ordered the kimchi pancake, hot stone bowl with bulgogi, and marinated short ribs. All three were delicious and more than enough food for two people. Can't wait to come back and try out more of the menu!
Good intro place for Korean BBQ, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, the banchan tasty and varied, with a decent selection of other dishes.
Great food and great staff. Fun atmosphere.
Staff was short with customers, food was ok but better Korean exists in the city.
