REVIEWS OF John's City Diner IN Alabama

Bethany Fleming

Great place for some great food, especially the bread pudding!

Jeffery Cannon

Food and service were top-notch! Looking forward to going back and trying the rest of the menu.

Eric Ferrell

Lunch and dinner are really good. Lunch his best to go by 11:30 so you don't have to wait. Also they have locally sourced ingredients.

Hubie Handing

Great place in the heart of Birmingham. The food was delicious, but the portions are a little small. So if you are super hungry you might need to add an appetizer like I did ;). The waiter was a little slow, but I have seen far worth at other places. Overall a good place to go.

bernard nomberg

I have been a patron of John’s City Diner for more than 15 years. I have interacted with the owner, Shannon Gober, during most of those visits. I have found the waitstaff and ownership to be professional and quite pleasant to deal with. There is a reason this establishment has been a local favorite for decades. If you want high-quality food and dining in a fun atmosphere in downtown Birmingham, I highly recommend you visit John’s City Diner.

Lance Adams

Good food with a unique Southern food menu.

Ricky Hilder

Fast friendly service big portions you definitely get your money's worth

Steve Blankenship

Amazing food, great staff and the best recommendations for the undecided.

Gene Garza

A great diner with big portions and a cool ambiance. It has an old time feel, great service and is in a good location for access for a lot of people who work downtown. I noticed they avoid wasteful products like straws and paper napkins, too.

Joshua Pickett

We always sit at the bar and get great service. They have great happy hour specials (for food and drink). Their food is interesting and unique. I would recommend them to anyone because they have a variety of choices. I like the salads, brussel sprouts, and chicken!

David Shafer

Had a great time! Was out with my wife for just a a dessert and the food and service were wonderful. Thanks CC for capping off a perfect evening. We will definitely be back!

Jefferey Wills

Very average flavor

Made reservation. Arrived before my guest and asked to b seated so I could order drinks. NO. Was told I had to wait for entire party. Decided to sit at bar. Bartender not very attentive. Food was fast but fish n chips were dry and fries were not good. Nice crispy crunch on COD but overcooked. Not a good experience for first timers but I think we might try it again

Nora Salmon

Fast, professional service; nice but unobtrusive decor; bar, booth and table options; good cocktail menu (the Brass Monkey is pictured-A+); simple comfort dishes cooked with care and customization. I had the macaroni and added roasted chicken on the server’s recommendation, it was excellent and a good portion! I had enough for leftovers.

John Fussell

Best food I’ve had in a long time! I had the herb crusted chicken with corn grits and buttered spinach

April Butler

The food was a step up from ok, which is unfortunate with it being one of the number of quick service locations in that part of downtown. The real killer for this place was the terrible service. Our server was irritated that we were even there, though she went to other tables almost adjacent to us and was 10× as helpful. As a former service industry worker, I understand it is tough; but know that each guest is an opportunity for you to continue to have a job/business for years to come, even if you've had a bad morning. For the price, I wouldn't even consider a return visit.

Richard Griffith

A terrific meal! We loved the meatloaf, fish/chips, meaty mac n cheese, and the veggie sandwich. The dark chocolate and white chocolate bread puddings were also both hits with our group. And very good service to top it off.

Elizabeth Heim

Great food- generous portions, amazing service- C.C. was on top of it, glasses regularly refilled and food brought out as soon as it was done. Had such a good experience.

Nik Layman

The food and atmosphere are great. Come hungry cause the proportions are generous

Joseph Baker

John's has the classic diner experience with upscale flair in its food. Its great for a moderately priced lunch or a very reasonable and tasty dinner. The chef likes to mix up the menu from time to time with unique creations while tried and true standards hold strong. Every so often they will throw a beer or wine special dinner with dishes created to pair with the appropriate alcohol. Often an expert will be on hand at the dinners to guide the guests through the meal and educate them on the finer points of the alcohol. All in all, John's is definitely a place for both the visitor and the resident alike to enjoy in Birmingham.

Bob Raney

Came in Monday suppertime with a group of 11 other foodservice managers in Birmingham on conference with the Executive Director of our company. Service was lousy. Our server enthused about everything on the menu being his "favorite". My Cubano was tasty but swimming in grease. Food came out way too slow - some of our party were done before others were even served. Two of our party had pork chops, underdone and fatty. Both tried to return food, but only one was "allowed" to, even though they still charged her for the iced tea. The other one was made to take chicken, even though she was initially told they were out! Waiters were in over their heads and the one with the ponytail got lippy with us. The manager stayed busy hiding and kept sending the wait staff back with unsatisfactory answers. It took another 40 minutes for us to get our checks. Management here is complacent with their 14 years under their belt. Bottom line: food was average but service was abysmal.

Lionel King

Great service, friendly

Mike Hudson

Impressive yet simple food. Really good service. We'll be back!

Drew

Delicious rainbow trout with roasted corn grits.

Dave Branch

Great food. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes were great!

juliabailey22 .

This place has got the best chicken and waffles and chicken wings I've ever had. And they have some amazing happy-hour specials. And their portions are generous. Their "small plates" will feed a hungry adult.

Asher Blair

Yeah ok so despite being overpriced, the food tastes good, but I had absolutely horrid cramps in my stomach after eating it.

Mike Stoupa

You owe it to yourself to have a meal here. Staff was awesome with food to match! The fries are off the hook, wings with a sauce to die for were delicious, and a Cuban with pork so tender it cuts like butter. Highly recommended!

D Redman

Just walked down from Hampton Inn Suites, Had there Meatloaf dinner, it was excellent. Only word of advice., dont fill up on snack food. The meal will fill you up. Great food, great waitress Angie.

Taylor Clem

clean great food and staff

Jonathan Craft

Had the pecan crusted trout for lunch. LOVED IT!

MsForeverjoyful .

Looked up down town restaurants, but also wanted to taste good southern food. This was IT! The service was amazing! Two different servers took the time to tell us more about Birmingham, being from the North West we just knew we were in the South. Our server said that all the produce and meat was fresh and from local farmers! Yes! Everything we ordered was amazing! We had fresh fried okra, 3 little pigs Mac and cheese, pork chop, and dark chocolate bread pudding. Prepare to have a party in you mouth. You won't regret you stopped by.

Matt Dawes

Great comfort food, service was good as well, very good local beers as well

Sydney Unruh

This is hands down the BEST chicken & waffles in Birmingham. The waffle is made with cheddar cheese so it's not as sweet as a standard waffle. It really makes the difference. Then the balsamic maple syrup on top is magical. I could eat this every single day. Great service every time I visit.

Elizabeth Meader

Food excellent and so was the service. If back in Birmingham, definitely eat there again.

Chariss Newsom

My fiance and our coworker decided to go here on our lunch break for my fiance's birthday. It was recommended to us by another colleague and it was amazing! The atmosphere was comfortable and the service was great. On top of that, the food was fantastic. I had the shrimp and grits, pretty simple. But it's topped with sausage gravy?! Totally new layer to a classic dish and definitely a perfect addition. Hoping to convince my fiance to go here for lunch more often.

Tony Ellis

This is one of my personal favorites spots downtown. The shrimp & grits are always awesome as well as the meatloaf. Definitely give this place a try.

Kevin Lovell

Very nice staff, excellent food, very large portions

Ryan Duke

Happy hour food and drinks are one of the best downtown. Get there early as space at the bar is limited.

Davia Martin

Great food and restaurant!!

Eric Jones

Delicious, amazing whiskey selection

Alexis .

This place was ok. The place is really cute on the inside and the menu is interesting. I had the fish and chips. The fries were great, but the fish was a bland to me. Our waitress was attentive so no complaints there. They close at 2:30 and reopen so we had to leave after they told us to. I didn’t love the way the person told us to though. I don’t mind leaving because I understand you have to leave, but be mindful of how you say it. I don’t really like places that close and then open back up because it’s hard to socialize, which is one of the reasons of going out to eat with other people, when they have to close up early. Plus my food was just ok, so probably won’t be back. I do recommend checking it out for yourself if you’re interested though.

Stefan Stefan

Great reinvention of diner food in a healthuer way with Alabama food goods. Great atmosphere, service, portions and price.

Heath Ferry

Pretty good food and friendly staff made eating dinner here really special.

Joey Wood

Delicious food. Everything we ate was so good. I ordered the fish and chips and could not have been happier. Our waiter as also super friendly. Definitely somewhere you have to eat if you live in Birmingham

Connie Brewer

Wow, what a great place to see & hear Reese Witherspoon

Tyler Pockitt

I love this place solely bc of the cook. I had to get his name because one time I came in with my family of 8 and our food not only came out super fast but NOTHING was wrong and EVERYTHING was immaculate. Thank you Christopher the Chef and John city diner

Michael Marquis

Some of the best food in B’ham, from the meatloaf to the chicken & waffles, you’ll discover something delicious here! Always friendly and courteous service and they’ll get to know you by name. Very diverse staff is appreciated and makes this a unique diner that mixes new with classic style, and don’t miss the bar and local on-tap brews. Put this place on your list if you live in BHAM or visiting!

Candice Dunn

Highly recommend! Our party of 6 was able to get in on a Friday night with no wait and the food was excellent! High quality dishes and so much more than the diner name. Will definitely be back.

bev murphy

Great service and food

chris lemmer

So delicious! I recommend the duck!

Loopie Fiasco

The service and the atmosphere were very good but the food was disappointing. We ordered the brussels sprouts appetizer and this was very good. It was made with bacon and golden raisins. The entree however was quite disappointing. We had the porkchop with garlicky spinach and sweet potatoes. The porkchop usually has a maple glaze and we asked this not be added. Perhaps as a result of this request the porkchop was so salty as to be almost inedible. Contrary to the salt on the porkchop the spinach and sweet potatoes were underseasoned. The spinach specifically was listed as garlicky but had no garlic flavor and needed to have salt added. The portion sizes were quite good though. Perhaps another dish would have been better.

Dennis Calvert

A little pricy for a diner, but so worth it. Everything I've tried is great and the service is fantastic.

Blake Panter

Food is good enough, but the service was lacking. In addition to inattentive service, they didn't inform us that they couldn't break up our ticket until the end which left our take adding and subtracting on the back of the receipt since she could run "like 4 cards." Won't return.

Nathan Stuckey

We went right at 11 for an early lunch, so we got our food quickly. I had the mac and cheese (of course) and the shrimp and grits, my wife had the meatloaf. I thought everything was delicious, the shrimp/grits were well seasoned and their house gravy is not for the faint of heart. The mac and cheese had ham, so be aware, the flavor was just right though and it's not a small portion. I would've done best to order a half-portion of the mac and cheese because while tasty, it's quite heavy. My wife said the meatloaf was very good too, it's a mix of pork and beef. This is one of the best "southern food" places we've been to in town. I can't speak to their evening fare yet but I would definitely recommend lunch so far.

Hillary w

Very good food. Good service

Bruce Tillman

It has a laidback atmosphere, the service is great, and most importantly the food is amazing.

Chris Ehrixh

A real special place in BHM with a great menue and an excellent service. A must try when being in town.

Stacy Chambers

I have a severe food allergy and the server made sure that my food was correct. He listed it on the order ticket ALLERGY!!!! THANK GOD for great people. Food was good. Dark chocolate bread pudding was to die for

Hope Buckley

Amazing food, comfortable atmosphere. Most incredible comfort food we've ever had. One stomach just isn't enough to enjoy it all! We'll be coming back and highly recommend the visit!

Daniel Ferguson

Great food! Classic southern fare with a unique twist. They staff is friendly and very attentive.

Monica Steele

Delicious food and excellent service as always.

Brent Olsen

The chicken and waffles was good but very pricey. $22 after a normal tip. Staff was friendly.

Stephen Thomas

Wonderful atmosphere! Best tasting modern southern food I have ever had. Great service and a wonderfully delicious dessert to top of the start of a great evening in Birmingham, Alabama!

Matthew Colson

1. Simple but perfect ambiance. Especially the small bar. It has an air of retro + homey. Music was very appropriate and played at ideal volume. 2. Food was outstanding. I had the chicken and waffles and my wife had the meatloaf special. Both dishes were generous in portion and gourmet in style. 3. Pricing of dishes was spot on ranging from around $13-$20 per entree. 4. Service was perfect. We didn't test out any specialty drinks but they looked amazing. Def give this place a shot.

Dean Baughman

Had a great lunch the food was wonderful I would recommend this place

Charles Smith

Good food, nice atmosphere. Excellent service.

Michael Tolene

We ate here numerous times and it never disappoints!

Vickey Ingram

Was really good food and a lot of it. My husband could not eat all of his chicken was so much but very moist.

Blake Thomas

Great Chicken and Waffles and Great Meatloaf.

Matthew Blankenship

Great food. Great service. Great hospitality. Host and servers were very accommodating and helpful. Scott is a fantastic server.

Robert Colley

Had lunch with my wife and her co-workers. Service and food was great!!! Would eat here again. It was my first visit.

Frank Ford

Decent food but the most arrogant wait staff I have ever seen. It was a real pain for them to refill your water or ice tea. They were too busy ending their shift than serving the customers. Very disappointing!

Dave Viveralli

One of my favorites when I'm in birmingham. Usually eat at the bar since I'm traveling. The food and service is consistently good.

Ashley Clark

AMAZING DISHES!!! CANT GO WRONG HERE!!!

Russell Hardwick

First visit and great

Ben Lyon

John's has been a Birmingham staple for a long time. I have been going for years. In general, what I have always appreciated about the place is the people, the consistency, and the convenience. There may be fancier or more "in" restaurants in BHM, but John's is unmatched for a good, casual, consistent experience. Whether you are in jeans or a suit, the mixture of clientele usually makes most anyone feel comfortable. My favorite heavy meal at John's, great in the winter: Meat-loaf and a cold Good People IPA.

Latrice Clifton

Meatloaf more like world infamous, fish and chips exceptional. Service friendly, professional.

William Parker

Good food.pricey

Luan Brashaw

I have heard of John's City Diner since moving to Birmingham in 2015. Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure to dine there until recently. It lived up to the hype. Everything was fantastic! First & foremost, the service was excellent. A smiling, friendly staff is welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. Our lunch was spot on, every single dish we had was presented well, had great flavor, and was cooked perfectly. **I will surely be back** Thanks for a great lunch!

Jordan Katzen

Great sever and the name is deceiving, this is by no means a diner, it's a full fledged restaurant that serves wonderful food.

Tia D.

So the food was alright. I love huge portion sizes and the meatloaf did not disappoint in that regard. Severely lacked in flavor. I had to put SO MANY shakes of salt on it. Husband thought that it tasted pretty good before the salt though. He had the shrimp and grits which he LOVED (have had many shrimp and grits and he said that this was second only to Shug’s), I however, thought that it too needed a lot of salt added (or in other words, more flavor; doesn’t even have to be salt but that’s all I had to work with). Finally, chose the peanut butter pie for dessert bc we wanted to be a little different, but it was TOO salty. Like so disgustingly salty that I couldn’t even finish it and our waiter asked us how we liked it and when I told him it was too salty, he didn’t even offer another dessert option or anything (other than that he was great though).

Luanu'u Maiava

Great food and great drinking options. Went here 2 days in a row due to the food and beer options (my other half.) Everything we tried was scrumptious. The fancy bacon and duck is 5 stars. I love pork chops and it was flavorful. The spinach was my favorite, I love garlic! There are beer choices on a chalkboard that someone wanted to drink a pint of each. Thankfully, it is against the law to DUI, so we only got to try 8 of the beers. The happy hour is great with $3 pints and half price small plates. Try the fancy bacon during hh. You will love it here!

John Vincent

Awesome place, great meatloaf, no, absolutely fantastic meatloaf, and the pimento cheese appetizer, wow. Great service, recommend this place to anyone.

Anthony Williams

Took my wife and daughter there for dinner and was born away at the quality dinner service and flavorful food! I had the Chicken and waffle, my wife had the herb crusted chicken and my daughter had a burger. One of the most enjoyable dining experiences we have had in our travels across the country.

Roderick Bolick-Gross

Very Unprofessional To say the Least !!!

Alvin Chen

White chocolate bread pudding is a must try!

Bill Pautler

Bham downtown classic. Menu broad. Spinach salad is very good. A lunch place with an old Southern twist. Has a small bar also if you like a lunch drink.

István Cseh jr.

A lovely place to dine in. I had the herb crust chicken. Yummie!!! Great staff!

Cameron Burke

Good fresh food in a nice quiet atmosphere. I enjoyed the duck thoroughly, but the dish lacked the finely-tuned deliciousness that would elevate the restaurant to a full 5-stars. Everything was slightly undersalted, and the dish could have been a little more cohesive in the pairing of sides, but overall the meal was still quite good. My picky father didn't enjoy the fact that the chicken and waffles were thigh meat without indicating so on the menu, and didn't like the balsamic maple syrup either, but his opinions on food are questionable at best. Overall this was a good restaurant that could become a fantastic restaurant with a little bit of work.

Barbara Pierce

My daughter took me there and it was my 1st time to go. The service was excellent ! The food was great! It is pricey but worth the money!! She got a bread pudding to go and it was yummy!!

Joshua Mixon

GREAT everything! Food, service, etc. And this is our traditional anniversary place!

Clay McCown

Always great food with friendly service. Nice dinner spot for a night out in the 'Ham.

Derek Ried

This place is so good! This is a family owned restaurant that really cares about the community and the neighbors. All that aside, the food is incredible!

Ian D. Owens

The meatloaf is exceptional and the corn grits are the best!

Johnnie Simpson

Comfort food. Great!

Hamza Abu-Hamdeh

The staff was very pleasant and informative. The food is a little pricey, but fair in portion and quality. All around great experience.

Teresa Shaw

We were traveling to Atlanta and stopped in downtown Birmingham after the lunch rush. The dinner was clean with a pleasant atmosphere. The waiter gave us his suggestions for lunch and then stepped back and let is choose. My husband had the meatloaf, smashed potatoes with mushroom brown gravy. He stated it was good but could have used a little onion or green pepper for flavor. I had the pork chop dinner. The chop was well seasoned, the smashed sweet potatoes were tasty and the garlic sauteed spinach was fantastic. All for about $20 each. The waiter was nice and engaged us in conversation.

Paul Maier

Chicken & Waffles, best in Birmingham ... Came back the next day for the Duck:: farm to table, crispy and tender

Chris Valencia

Always great food at John's. Something for everyone, and you won't leave hungry

Barbara Taylor

First time time dining here, though this restaurant has been in this locationfor years.Food was excellent and generous.Service was great.Granddaughter loved our waitress because she took a genuine interest in her.I liked her too.

Michael Peebles

Wow! What a fabulous place! Great food. Great location. Uber nice staff. Can't wait to go back. I give this place 5 stars.

Brooklyn Fox

John's City Diner is my absolute favorite restaurant in Birmingham. I've been going for date night on Friday for quite a while and I always have an amazing experience. Excellent service and my favorite dish is the Porkchop, it's always cooked to perfection.

Quavardis Morrell

It's the most upscale Comforts Food Spot you can imagine mixed with fat seat classic such as duck you cannot go wrong this is where executives and common Folk both come together

Phillip Chase

Great service and food... everything from scratch..

jason lee

Great mac n cheese! I was concerned that it wasn't going to be filling. But it was amazing. Bread pudding is a must try as well.

anna parker

Amazing staff (WE LOVE YOU CECE), amazing food. Check out those thighs!

Joe Lumansoc

Excellent food. Friendly staff. The prices weren't too bad. I forgot I was actually at a diner with the quality of food they have here. I had the appetizer (special bacon-glazed Brussels sprouts) , famous meatloaf, and the dark chocolate bread pudding. I'll be back for sure!

Hannah Singer

UPDATE y'all, seeing photos of this diner in the press, it's the OWNER himself who's responsible for the nightmare treatment may 25th and refusing to speak with me about this. yikes. disappointed. we hosted friends from out of town and THIS is how they were treated? made worse by the (lack of) response from JCD. it's been over a week and zero positive engagement from john's city diner. i have called, emailed left facebook comments. i stopped by and "no one was available to see me". at this point i take their lack of reply as a reply: they don't care about their guests. or at least don't care about their black guests? or black guests from out of town? would love to hear from JCD and when they plan to apologize and make this right. sadly, i cannot ever now darken their doors and i will be sure to tell everyone i know to skip them with me. see attached photos for the incident details and that they blocked me on twitter when i asked for their explanation for the trash service they gave my friends.

Michael Brown

Second time here and still love it! Great friendly service too

Brainiac M

Wonderful food, service, atmosphere, and people! Definitely one of the best locally owned restaurants in Birmingham. I'd recommend it to everybody!!!

Mickei Archie

Wonderful service delicious food.

Andrew Metzler

Excellent food and drink selection

Dante Darancou

First off, I always have to start by introducing myself as some kind of Chicken and Waffles connoisseur. I was surprised by the options I had... usually, it’s easy to just say ‘bring me the chicken and waffles’... you never expect the reply, ‘which ones would you like?’ Needless to say, I look forward to coming back to try the others. Well, the original is what I chose. And it was great! It made it to my top 5... btw1,2&3 are tough to move out of their spots... For reference, here’s a list of the top Chicken and Waffles(imo): 1) Taste of Belgium - Cincinnati, Oh 2) Crave - El Paso, Tx 3) The Oak Barrel - Cleveland, Oh 4) John’s City Diner - Birmingham, Al 5) The Silver Dollar - Louisville, Ky 6) Avenue American Bistro - Detroit, Mi 7) Door 55 - Toronto, Ont 8) Chicken and Beer - Atlanta airport 9) Jonathan’s diner oak cliff - Dallas, Tx 10) The District Tap - Indianapolis, In 11) The Early Bird - London, Ont 12) Maple Leaf Diner - Dallas, Tx 13) Ida Claire - Dallas, Tx 14) Mama’s - Dallas, Tx 15) Hammerheads - Louisville, Ky

Terry Mims

Great service without being overbearing. Chicken and waffles were excellent. Food came out quick. Very nice place and really clean.

Jo Ann Milam

Love the burger & fries and the “not yo mamas” mac n cheese!

Dorothy Penn

Nice staff, great food

Jeff Kidd

Small diner downtown Birmingham. Fresh food.

James Massey

Order the famous meat loaf. It was cold and might have been decent if they actually put some gravy on it. Couldn’t get waiters attention. Do not recommend johns city diner to anyone. Will not be back. The food made me and my girlfriend sick

Tammy Earnest

Was there for a safety meeting. Room was great for our purpose. Dinner was served quickly and our waiter was very attentive but unobtrusive. I had the meatloaf and it was okay but a little overcooked. The Belgian Chocolate Bread pudding was delicious. Several people in our group had the chicken and waffles and said it was delicious. Try it!

Johnny Harrington

Always good, always satisfying, the service is always quick and friendly too! And I mean. Look at this pork chop.

Art Hogarth

Down home cooking! The pork chop with bone in amd all the fat was great! order it a bit above what you would prefer per the waitresses suggestion. Sweet mashed potatoes were great as was the Bacon spinch. Cocktails were we made. I will revist again when I am in town again as this is really a great mom and pop kind of joint with out a lot of fan fare.

Chris Morris

Love the food and atmosphere! I've been here twice and both times have loved it. I tried their chicken and waffles this last time (they're famous for them), and it was excellent. I definitely recommend going here.

Paul Odom

Great Friday Evening Dinner. Service great , Food Wonderfully Yummy

Mike Moran

Great place for chicken and waffles!

Julie Henderson

My husband and I were downtown recently and wanted to try John's on the recommendation of our son. We found the menu varied and seemed to have something for everyone. My husband had a vegetable plate and I had the Cheeseburger plate. Both were wonderful! My burger was cooked just as I had asked (medium) with my choice of cheeses added (I had Swiss). It was served with the freshest of additions (lettuce and red onion, my request. The oversize patty was seasoned beautifully, juicy and with a nice charcoal grilled flavor. My burger came with an order of THE BEST FRENCH FRIES I HAVE EVER HAD! Hand-cut, home-fry type, so crispy on the outside and flaky and tender on the inside. I did ask the waitress how they made them and she said they were lightly battered and flash fried. And wait til you see what they serve them in! Service was relaxed and very attentive by Amy. I cannot imagine, for the life of me, why people on some of these reviews say the prices here are high. We thought them all very reasonable! We will certainly return to John's!

black hed

Always great food.

Matt Modena

The food here was great. I was walking through downtown looking for somewhere to eat and this place stood out to me. I got the chicken and waffles which I would definitely get again if I get to come here again. Highly recommend for a dinner in Birmingham.

Zach McAuley

Delicious food, but it is slightly on the pricier side for what it is. The portions can easily make up for it, though. You will not leave hungry. The chicken with the chicken and waffles has been HUGE when I ordered it, and very tasty. They are keeping an old Birmingham landmark alive and doing right by it's former namesake.

Mary Chavers

Didn't enjoy food as I did years ago. Service was very good, but menu was somewhat limited.

Shyamal Subramanyam

Great ambience with good food. Customer service was friendly and prompt. A nice place to hang out with friends at.

Nice Rich

Quirky place that almost looks like a cafeteria. Lively and warm, staff are attentive enough. Food was creative but almost too much, and I'm from Los Angeles, it don't get more "creative" than out her. Give it a shot, well established, could tell most the crowd was locals. They must know a good thing... it is the South and all, y'all

David Hanor

Five stars! Fun diner with perfect small bar for a beer or cocktail. Full plates with true southern cooking

Jasmine Shaw

I had my Birthday dinner here and it was such a treat. The food was hot and delicious, the drinks were potent and tasty. The service was great as well, our waiter gave us lots of info since it was our first time there. Try the brussel sprouts and garlicky spinach!

Wendy Griffith

The food was excellent, service was awesome. Had a good atmosphere, would definitely be back.

Eric Hand

I've been to John's a couple times and have enjoyed the experience every time. First time I had the duck entree and it was delicious. Recently I had the special of the day, fresh salmon, with sweet potatoes and greens. Sides were good and the salmon was good but nothing special. Service has always been perfect and I have no reason to not give it 5⭐!

Jameson Ware

Wait staff was super courteous when we had to leave unexpected and get our food to go as he was bringing it out.

Rob D.

I passed by this place many years and finally i go in and should have been went in. This place is very nice and the food is good too!

Christine Lloyd

Great atmosphere

m mahan

This food was slap-worthy delicious!

Karla Adams

Service is great here. We had a large party, which if you made a reservation for a large party you have to pay on 1 check. Had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes which was not that great to me. My husband had the Cubano sandwich which was much better.

Lauren Franklin

First time eating here and everything was GREAT! The staff was friendly and accommodating. When you have a toddler this is a definite PLUS! The food and dessert were amazing! Make sure to try the white chocolate bread pudding.....you wont be disappointed!

Jim and Jennifer Sandberg

The meatloaf and gravy was the best I've ever eaten. Grits actually had corn flavor. Garlic spinach and collards were tender and flavorful. Our waiter was attentive and helpful.

Denisa Saez

Great food and service. The pork chop was delicious!

Preeti Gratz

One of the best lunch spots downtown!

caroline staggers

Very friendly staff, casual atmosphere. Delicious food, priced right.

Derek Williams

A decent revamp/modernization of the diner format. Greasy spoon++ style. Good beer.

lowndes whatley

We found this place by accident. The restaurant we were going to was closed for a private party and our limo has already left so we asked yelp for a good nearby place and John's popped up. We all agreed this was the best thing to happen to us. Probably never would have ever found it otherwise. Now it's at the top of everyone's list for Bham. The 4 of us all ordered something different and sampled each other's meal. WOW. It was ALL superb!! This is a really good restaurant, just a tad different from your usual "diner", subtle modern decor, excellent service (THANK YOU, again, CC!), SUPURB food, very reasonable prices, huge portions, quiet and friendly. This place is a "sleeper" now but will hard to get into soon. Same menu for lunch we were told. SO GLAD WE FOUND IT. WE WILL BE BACK.

Excellent service and a great menu - get the chicken and waffles. We came for NYE and this was a great choice. Would have 5 stars if it weren't very very chilly the whole dinner but the staff says building management (separate from the restaurant) controls this.

Portions matched the price. Their sweet tea was perfect. It was a good brew and wasn't to sweet like all these other places around here. We started our meal with roasted garlic humus dip with pita bread. This was the highlight of the meal for me. Huge pieces of garlic and olives. My wife and I both ordered the "Hangover" Chicken and Waffles. She loved every bite. The waffle tasted amazing, the fried half chicken was finger licking good. However, for me, the syrup with basalmic vinegar was not something I enjoyed. The waiting staff was great. No chit-chat and never left us with an empty glass. We will definitely be going back. Need to try those shrimp and grits. Sounds delicious.
