We have the opinions of real people like you who buy the products of Bright Star Restaurant (Restaurant) in the state of Alabama.
At present this firm has a rating of 4.6 stars out of 5 and that score was based on 1443 reviews.
You may have noticed that its rating is basically the best, and it is founded on a very high number of scores, so we may say that the assessment is quite accurate. If people have bothered to rate when they've done well, it works.
As you know, we do not usually stop to set tatings when they are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Restaurant corresponds to the category of Greek restaurant.
Excellent fish, house dressing was amazing. Well worth the drive to support this family owned restaurant with superb quality.
Always great food, atmosphere and people.
My family and I love to eat at The Bright Star Restaurant. The food is amazing and the staff is top notch. It's a must to try their fried crab claws! You will not be disappointed!! ❤
Great historical place with good service and food
You don't want to miss it. The food is awesome, the staff is exceptional and the ambience is perfect.
Always a treat.....my mom has been eating here for almost 90 years. We calibrated her 92nd birthday on this visit.
The people, greeter and wait staff were all excellent and cheerful. The food was a disappointment. Two of the 3 fish meals were over cooked, heavily breaded and grease soaked as were an order of french fries. Fries were also over cooked. We have eaten here before and have always been happy with our food but not this time. Maybe it was because it was Valentines Day??? We will try again but if the results are still the same it will be the last.
Family gathering at Bright Star, we all enjoyed so much!
Came here for the first time on my birthday with my parents and was amazed by the quality of service and food. Our server linda was very attentive and great with the kids.
Greek style cuisine... Food and quality was excellent
I had a great time and the food was wonderful too! The waitress was cute and funny and flirtatious and very effective.
Fast, tasty, and such kind waitresses. The pie was to die for!
This was my first time visiting this restaurant after hearing so many extravagant reviews and I must say I was shocked. I was on a business meeting and we both tried the salmon. We both agreed that it should have been cook a while longer. My squash was very mushy. My water was not refilled one time.
Always great food and great service! A great place to bring guests and friends to dine.
Always delicious and fresh with excellent service. The signature snapper with crab meat is caught same day fresh and prepared beautifully.
The server wasn’t very friendly and the seafood platter was horrible. The breading failed off of the scallop when I cut off a bite size. Needless to say, I was done. When I checked out the cashier asked how was my meal? I reluctantly answered by telling her it wasn’t good at all. Now remember she asked, right? I told her. You would think she was serious when she asked. Her reply to me was, “there’s nothing I can do about it”. Why did she ask? I don’t think I will be returning to Bright Star anytime soon. Bye the way, my wife and I were celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary.
Always awesome. Southern faves, fresh seafood. Good meat and three at lunch.
No pics bc they didn't get transferred to my new phone. But great service and good food. Our server was a delight. Plan to return soon. My Mom loved it . Again !
Awesome restaurant! Beautiful comfortable wood interior, the oldest restaurant in Alabama & they have something for everyone's palate!
Hard to beat Bright Star for the food, the service, or the history. Dinner is pricey, but worth it. Lunch is more reasonable and still very good. A good variety and I've never found anything that wasn't terrific. And a very interesting piece of history, too. Materials and murals dating back a century!
Best little restaurant in Bessemer. If you haven't gone here yet you are missing out. Such a heart warming staff that always takes care of you.
Was really good I would love to see (grouper) as the star of the menu or as a daily option broiled the same way the snapper is prepared
This place with it's storied history never disappoints. I got the pan seared salmon and it was perfection. It stood on it's own but the dill sauce was delicious. Vegetables were good too. Broccoli was overcooked a tad for my taste but still very tasty. The waitress very good and Nita (?), Bright Star's ambassador dropped by to greet and tend any needs. She explained that there is a pie lady that cooks their pies on the premise daily (which explains why the coconut pie was so good). It's always an exceptional dining experience.
I love the food and the service is very good.
It was wonderful, I had the beeftips and rice, the tips were very tender. The atmosphere was nice. If those walls could talk, stories they would tell. It's like stepping back in time when you first walk in, everyone is very friendly, food is served quickly, and taste wonderful.
This place is special! They been in business since the early 1900s and that should say enough! Awesome food! I recommend the Texas special.
Take a step back to a time when high quality food and great service with a family atmosphere means something! This may be one of the only places that you might find all three!
Love the atmosphere that harkens back to a time gone by. Met the owner who was sincerely appreciative of us eating there. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and our first time to eat there. Food was excellent and they took very good care of us!
Always Great! Worth the 1hour round trip.
We went to eat here after visiting the doctor at UAB. Great atmosphere and food. The best part was the gentleman that shared his love for Jesus. No shame in the Lord for him. It was greatly needed and appreciated. God bless.
The Greek seasoned steak was just not for me. Everyone raves about it, so I am sure it is just my taste in steak.
All the food I've ever had has been exceptional. I've read some of the reviews about customers having poorly prepared meals. The only thing i can say if your meal isn't up to your standards let the server know. No need to be ugly or rude. Just be straight with them. I've witnessed complete family meal taken care of and even replaced.
Great food and service with reasonable prices for the quality of everything you get. We had a great dinner experience and I highly recommend it.
Delicious food and excellent service! I’ll be back!
Loved it, great food and excellent people!
Very good service and great food.
Delicious food, beautiful historical restaurant and outstanding service! We had 3 different items from the menu and each item was perfect. The gumbo was especially noteworthy. Bananas foster is a great way to finish off the meal, if you can find room.
Dad in the Kitchen. Love it. Get the bread pudding. Sit in the Bear Bryant booth.
Loved this place! An iconic restaurant in yhe Birmingham area, went there for the first time a few months ago for lunch. Recently went back for dinner, it was wonderful. Quality ingredients, great preparation, and super service. It's often billed as a Greek restaurant but it has fare for all tastes. The seafood selection is very nice. The location itself has it's own personality, has a vibe of a time gone by. The prices are what I consider a bit high, but absolutely worth it.
They have great food very clean and nice staff
This is a state institution that has been open for over 100 years. Definitely the fanciest meat-and-three I've ever been to. That being said, I don't think the hype lived up to the experience. Quality and the amount of food were fine and the service was excellent. If I hadn't gone for a work lunch, I couldn't see myself spending $15.00 for a meat-and-three lunch.
Eating at the Bright Star is always a wonderful experience and our lunch this past Wednesday continued the tradition! The service, food and atmosphere are always the best. It is also a joy when our fellow dinners seem to be having the same great experience! It is truly a Bright Star!
This place never changes. Good food, good service.
It was nice to sit in the bar area for a relaxing late lunch.
Wonderful food, atmosphere, and people. History busting at the seams
Excellent as always. My wife loves their seafood and I always get the KC Extra Cut steak. It is always super tender and well cooked.
Had week day lunch last week with customers. 1st time ever been there. Nice upscale place on bad side of town. Sat in the Nick Saban booth. The food was delicious but seemed like the server was having a bad day and it showed. It's worth going to at least once.
The food is good and the service is great! Snapper throats, Greek-style anything, yum!
The kindest staff serving the best food! Also lots of cool history about this restaurant.
Great experiences are regular occurrences at Bright Star! Food is always fabulous and staff is always attentive! A must have is their signature Bright Star long island tea! It's huge! Greek salad with entree is the way to go. If you've got room for dessert, all of them are delicious!
It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. Excellent food and an historical setting.
Good , holsom environment, good food. Enjoyed the visit.
One of my all-time favorite restaurants. This place is a true gem. It's not a small place by any means but it feels very intimate. The lighting is perfect. I always have steak or fish when I visit. I'll often order the trio that comes with another dish as well. If you like dessert, everything on Bright Star's dessert menu is to die for. I'll often only eat a few bites of my entree and take most of it home just so I can enjoy one of their delicious desserts. If you've never been here, you're really missing out. I dare anyone to try it and not go back a second and third time.
This is very cozy and beautiful place. The way that people serve you is the best, very friendly environment. Amazing food, I will be back. Don't lose the opportunity to talk to Nita, she is adorable...
I like the lunch menu better than the diner menu. They have a large selection of vegetables on the lunch menu that they do not have on the dinner menu. They also have a good selection of lunch specials. Everything at lunch is always very fresh and very good. My favorite is the salmon with dill sauce and the carrot and raisin salad.
The food is always good but when I order to go I always have to sit here for an extra 20 minutes waiting on my order, If I wanted to sit here for that long waiting on my order to go then I would just dine in.
If you've never been to the Bright Star you must go at least once. The atmosphere is good and it is pretty cool to look at all the old murels and pictures. Originally opened in 1907 it has been run by the same family at least since 1925. Food is normally good as is service. Be prepared to wait if you walk in. I suggest reservations.
Food was very good, service was fast and friendly
Food was excellent (red beans & rice and grilled salmon)) for lunch on Tuesday. Service compliments to Nena was outstanding. Best of all worlds--food, service and atmosphere. Truly amazing. Ready to dine there again...soon!
Classic southern comfort food with long history. The fried fish throats were tender and flakey, just remember that cut of fish usual has a couple hidden bones.
Not at all what it was many years ago. The service was fair enough but, the food quality was the direct opposite of the price. The price was far too much for the quality or amount. Fortunately for me, I am not required to go there very often.
Bucket list. Oldest restaurant in Alabama. Great food
Attended a Birthday dinner the lunch menu was tasty i had the Salmon
What a fabulous find! Wonderful atmosphere with beautiful old decor. Never expected to find a spot with outstanding food and fair prices. Most unusual...only,sorry we are just passing through...this would be a favorite!
Food was great. It was cold inside and the waitress was not good. We tipped her well maybe that will help. Food quality rate 4 out of 5. Nice ambiance, overall rating 3.5 because it was cold inside and the waitress seemed to not want to be there.
Great food most of the time. In recent years, have seen the food change in quality and taste.
Absolutely love The Bright Star. Customer service is top notch and the food is delicious. The Fried Green Tomatoes never disappoint. Definitely an old school establishment that is worth trying out.
Always good food with good service. The menu is straight forward not fancy but good eats. The venue has old charm that harkens back to older times with dark woods, private booths, and quiet. You can actually have a conversation with your dinner companions.
Historic place. Good food, but lacking in vegetarian options.
Great server, informative & attentive. Good food.
Don't order the seafood. You'll be very disappointed.
I travel a lot and this is one of the most incredible gems I have stumbled across. The food is incredible and wrought with tradition and quality. The history in the building adds an unparalleled magic and sense of awe and wonder.
I've always loved The Bright Star. I feel if you are going for lunch get there before1o'clock. Every time I get there late some things are a little dried out. I had to get tarter sauce for the greek snapper. I had great service and will always go back.
This was our first visit. I'm in love with this place. The history, the food, and the staff are all wonderful. I had the country fried steak, fried okra, rice and spinach casserole, and pickled beets. My boyfriend had country fried steak, okra, and mashed potatoes with gravy. We ordered peanut butter pie and lemon pie for dessert. The restaurant ambassador came to our table and talked with us and showed us the Alabama room. What a delightful lady. I truly enjoyed talking with her. I highly recommend the Bright Star.
Delicious food would definitely like larger portions
Great historic place with some of the best southern food I've ever had. Got to love the pies too!
Excellent atmosphere.....delicious food....service was above and beyond...highly recommend eating here if u are close by....
Been eating here since I was a baby! Always good, especially the fired crab claws! Jimmy and his crew are awesome! Last time I was there I saw Nick Saban and his wife sneak in through the back! Restaurant of champions! Roll Tide!
One of the best restaurant I have ever visited. Staff are so sweet and food is delicious! Jimmy is so handsome! Roll Tide!
Great food. Excellent, polite service. Atmosphere is beyond comparison.
Once a month I go to a small retirement luncheon at the Bright Star. No better place for great Greek food. The best. Yum
Very consistent and good food for over 100 years
This place has excellent food and service I highly recommend it's expensive but worth it
It was OK they had 11dollars for wings on the menu I had and I asked her why she had charged me twelve dollars she said because that's what they cost.I told her to let me see a menu and the menu had scratched out the 11 dollars and wrote 12 dollars with a marker and I thought that looked so unprofessional for this place of business,But I told her my menu wasn't scratch out u could see 11 dollars as clear as day and my menu wasn't marked. And my daughter ordered her a basket meal for 15.00 and she charged her for the 18.00 basket... My daughter had to get some extra money from me...Because we do believe in tipping....A mess
The Greek Style Tenderloin can't be beat. Located in historic downtown Bessemer, the friendly staff is the best.
At lunch, get the beef tips. For dinner, you can't go wrong with the tenderloin or prime rib. If you like onion rings, try them as an appetizer; they are pretty good (and enough for a few folks).
Woderful location and my Bacon wrapped filet was amazing.
Whenever I get to choose the place THIS is it! In fact, I am going there for dinner tomorrow evening! I love the snapper and the stuffed shrimp! Their beef tips are also delicious! The bread pudding is to die for and the service is impeccable!
Great steak! And their service is exceptional!
Very unique atmosphere and the pictures in the entrance are great. The food was good at lunch was ok but far from Nickie's West or Irondale cafe quality. We had lunch dinner may be better. Gumbo was excellent!
Great atmosphere, great food. I love coming here
Everything was delicious! My waitress, April, was delightful! I had their crab cakes with the shredded coleslaw, buttered squash and fried okra. That's a very beautiful restaurant, a wonderful option to have available.
Returned Home for a visit: The service was great, food was a Lil pricy and not seasoned, restaurant is historic and it's still carrying the torch of waitress discrimination, I would think after the decades of existence and the patronage share by other Non-white customers that owner/management would have GROWN with the times. We decided on a return visit to the STAR because mom enjoyed it years ago, we immediately notice NOTHING HAD CHANGED, I respect the history but will not return
Our server was great! We sat in the Nick Saban booth and we were very please with our experience. We were torn between the peanut butter pie and the baklava... so we ordered the baklava and our sweet server felt that we still needed to try the peanut butter and brought us a complementary piece. *so sweet of him* 5 star experience for sure.
Easily the best stake around. Lunch is good for a quick bite, dinner is best for date night. A family owned classic with fantastic food and service to match (thanks Linda!)
The staff here were SO NICE and accommodating when I made a reservation and brought in a large group (~30) after my grandma's funeral. They have a nice room for groups. Highly recommend!
Always good food. Excellent service!
It was awesome as always. It's been anniversary tradition for 20 years.
Always great food and great service. Awesome atmosphere.
Best Greek chicken I've ever had! I can see why they've been around over 100 years!
The Bright Star is day in and day out the best restaurant in Alabama. One of the owners Jimmy and Nicky are always there to greet you and make sure everything is just right. Been going there for over 45 years.
Love, love, love Bright Star. Celebrated my 70th birthday. Excellent food excellent service.
I love coming here. Fantastic food and service. Really cool place too.
I'm originally from the Midwest, but I gotta say, this steak was exceptional!! Great staff!! Will definitely be returning!
Nostalgic place. Dated. Food and service are superb. Get it Greek style! Always! Best margarita I ever had. Neighborhood not the greatest.
Delicious Mediterranean & American cuisine...a local classic restaurant with nearly a century-long history! Great food, great bar, and great service!
Excellent food. I truly enjoyed the fried shrimp. Great service.
Such a cute place with so much personality and a unique atmosphere! Steak was cooked to perfection and the bananas foster was to die for!
Ice hox pie ws amazing. Service was great.
The ppl are so inviting and the crab cakes were great the gumbo was wonderful! And those greek potatoes Omgoodness!
The steak was amazing! No wonder they won an award for it. My dad loves the snapper. Such a great historic restaurant in downtown Bessemer the ambience is wonderful.
Ms. Craig, Thank you very much for helping make our evening so successful. The waiter was as good as they come and must be one of your best, The flowers were absolutely perfect and Susan said she would call the florist to tell them what a very nice job they did for us and you. Would recommend them to anyone. The waiter made an extra effort to make it enjoyable and, as always, your food was as good as it gets. It was an evening that will be remembered for a very, very long time. The bread pudding, as Susan said, was the best she had ever had. I can not thank you and your staff enough for the kind comments and efforts made by all. The Bright Star has earned and deserves it's reputation. We wish you many more years of success. You are, and have been, an asset to the entire industry. Sincerely, John and Susan May
Everything perfect and service was exceptional. I had the Snapper Almondine and I enjoyed it too the fullest.
A must for anyone who wants to experience a truly authentic and amazing local dining experience! The oldest restaurant in Alabama features incredible early 1900 murals and tile work creating a unique atmosphere and attraction. It is the first Alabama restaurant to receive the James Beard Award for culinary excellence. The food is excellent and the staff is equally as good. A consistently Great experience!
My first time going and the food was great. Our server (Kathi) was horrible. She treated us with no common courtesy nor respect. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or what was going on. When I go back, I will make sure not to be seated in her section.
My experience was second to none. I celebrated my birthday with my brother Cedric and friend Valerie. The service and food was excellent. I will go back
Good food and phenomenal service. Much needed in the area as well.
The atmosphere is pleasant, the service was excellent, and the food was delicious as always.
Very good. Had a 57 High School Reunion for my husband. Very friendly staff
The food and service was great..... I've lived in Alabama for 20yrs had never gone.... i finally did.... it was great Roll Tide !!!!!
The food is wonderful! Best fried green tomatoes I've ever eaten anywhere. Southern food & fresh Gulf seafood with a Greek flair. Only at Bright Star, y'all.
Its always excellent food every time I go there. Great service too.
Never had a bad meal here! Always a pleasure!
History, nostalgia, vintage furnishings, Yes! Victuals, not so much. $$ too.
Everything was great. Stuffed snapper was tender, fried eggplant was firm and had just minimal breading. Can see why they won a James Beard.
My favorite restaurant in the Birmingcvham area! Always great food, great service and wonderful atmosphere! When we have friends visiting from out of town The Bright Star is where we take them. We average eating here 40 - 50 times per year. Also, we have enjoyed many Thanksgiving dinners at the Bright Star! And, Todd is our favorite server!
Great place. Food is very good. Atmosphere is comfortable. Older building with very nice architectural details on the inside. Service was fantastic. Bread pudding was spectacular! :-)
We were traveling through from Baton Rouge and stopped at the Bright Star. A little nervous as LSU fans and Alabama fans sometimes don’t mesh ;) however this place was awesome! The food was fresh and delicious, we got two of the stuffed snapper specials, fried shrimp and crab claws. All was delicious. Our waitress was fast and attentive and very friendly. All staff we came into contact with were very friendly even to my husband in the LSU shirt ;) We talked to the owner and head chef leaving and they were friendly as could be too. Everytime we are passing through, we will stop here. Highly recommended, lived up to all the reviews! Great establishment!
Great food! The service and atmosphere was perfect
Great home style meals... Decent pricing for the food you get.
It was my first time there! The food was good service was great! I would recommend this face to anyone who wants some good food! Kind of pricey but worth every penny!
Tonight we celebrated our 33rd anniversary at the Bright Store. Our waitress was awesome and the food was delicious. The coconut pie was the icing on the cake. We love going here to eat.
This is a restaurant that you will want to visit several times. The food is excellent and the service is very good. Their prices are a little on the high side. You can expect to paid about $40 per person for a meal including drink and desert. This restaurant is an excellent choice for special occasions. Don't forget to include 15 to 20 percent gratuity for your server, they earn it.
Everything was phenomenal! The food and service were fantastic, well worth the trip! We shall return!
This restaurant is not very cheap but definitely worth the money and getaway. It's relaxing and pretty upscale. I enjoyed my visit here for mutt birthday but the food took really long to get prepared and I did not get to dine in before the movie started. Took the food with me but did enjoy it later that night. Give at least an hour and a half timing before planning your next event.
As the oldest family owned restaurant in the state it's a place to experience. Food is good but not at the top level of Birmingham restaurants.
Our waitress, Linda, was fantastic! She gave us a quick tour and told us some of the history! Jimmy was a sweetheart! The food was exceptionally good. It was truly the best gumbo we have ever tasted....we had to get some to go! And we will definitely be returning.
Best and oldest restaurant lives up to its name! Jimmy and Niki are two of the best restaurant owners in the world! Been dining here for over 40 years and it always has great food and super service! The Bright Star is nothing but winners! Roll Tide!!!
This place is an icon. The food and service are as great as ever! Memorabilia makes the place like a delightful museum. Wine prices are surprisingly reasonable, and they offer full bar service with some specialty drinks like Long Island Tea. They still serve bread and butter! I had the special of the day which was stuffed snapper, quite good. The menu is a mixture of Greek and Southern, they even have peanut butter pie. Atmosphere is cordial and comfortable, dress is somewhat upscale like business casual. Thankfully a respite from modern chain restaurants, the Bright Star is its own good thing. There are tables for big groups, and comfy booths for a date or small gathering. Highly recommend!
It was every nice place to eat at.
I did not hate this place. I have been coming been coming here for years and it was always good.
A very good place eat, None better.
We love this place. Great food, good wine selection and warm bread great service
One of our Friends favorites! Everything is excellent, especially there Greek Tenderloin,Salmon, and Stuffed Snapper!!! Highly recommend.
The wait even with a reservation is 30-45 mins. Also, some of the food was dry and not cooked well. The restaurant itself looked understaffed. I honestly felt sorry for the waitresses as they looked very overworked.
Food was not really seasoned. Our server Morgan was very rude. They were out of mashed potatoes she did not inform us.She gave us Greek potatoes. When someone said something she told us to let her give orders out first and she would fix. She never came back to fix the other orders. She did fix the first order. She also touched a guest beef tips when asked to replace the place she wasn't not happy. The older gentleman that was helping was very nice and helpful. Morgan also hand written 20% gratuity on our checks which some of us paid. She wasn't supposed to do that we just didn't want my family members graduation day to be ruined.
Have been visiting your restaurant since I was a child. I am now 78. We have hosted joyful events and mourned with friends and family when loved ones were lost at your place. The food renewed our bodies and spirit. Always delicious and comforting. Like stepping back in time for e. Thank you.
My mom and I have eaten here several times after church service. The owners are super nice, which go a long way with me. I usually order the turkey and dressing, and it's delicious. The Mac and cheese is good and the Greek style potatoes are great as well. I enjoy the ambience of the restaurant. It's upscale enough for date night, yet inexpensive enough to take out of town guests who want to experience one of the oldest restaurants in the state. It's a piece of history, for Pete's sake. What's not to love? Maybe the tiny portions, as my mom would say. Overall, this is a classy restaurant with a rich history...but if you are really hungry, or greedy, this is not your spot.
Long established icon restaurant. Great food, house specialties. Friendly and knowledgable staff.
Really delicious. Gumbo and Gulf shrimp salad were wonderful! Friend had salmon that was very good.
Wonderful gem of a restaurant over 100 years old! Delicious Greek and seafood dishes....great service and neat historic building. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
Very interesting and enjoyable...good seafood gumbo...id go back. Very interesting memorabilia
Absolutely amazing food! Pricey, but well worth it!!
This should be rated the number restaurant in America! The salmon is always fresh and the dill sauce is so good!!!! My favorite part is all the pictures, Bama memorabilia and Jimmy is still a good looking man! Roll Tide Jimmy!
Food was cold. The service was great!
Very nice restaurant. We had a party of 9 and the service was great even though there were several of us. The food was a little over priced for the chicken since I'm not a steak eater. They need more options on the menu for those of us who don't eat steak. Would my husband and I go back just the 2 of us, probably not, but for a special occasion with friends we would.
Oh my goodness, this place is awesome. Built & and started in 1915. Great atmosphere and fantastic food! In the center of Bessemer, Alabama - no place like it in the area. You must try the stuffed snapper - Wow! I'll return for sure!
Nice throw back kind of place. Friendly staff. Had the Texas special. The steak was great, the fish was great, the crab au gratin was interesting but good.
