This place is a nightmare. I rented a car on the21st. They took a deposit in my debit card, said I would get it back in 7 to 10 days. Almost a month now , no returned deposit. Called they said they released it, and my bank was holding it. Go in the bank, they say Payless never released it. Call Payless, they say wait another 10 days. Payless, my back side, sounds like pay more. They have rented their last car to me. I will not use this company again.

Made a reservation. Arrived and was told that because I had not rented from Payless before, I would need a copy of a utility bill or two other forms of identification (beyond my NC drivers license with my company credit card - if I was voting, I would have been ok!). None of these are something that I can generate on the fly. So I presented the agent with a copy of a Payless Rental Contract from 2016. Still not good enough. I hate to be surprised when traveling on business!!!! Luckily, Payless is in the same building as AVIS and AVIS doesn't have such nonsense procedures. If it had not been for AVIS my blood pressure would not have subsided. But, I will never ever never rent from Payless again.

Waited with others 3-4 hours to get a car, most of the time standing. Not so much as a 'sorry about the wait' at the counter. Be warned if making a reservation at this location.

My first pick up process was pleasant and the young man working behind the counter was great. Things went downhill after that. When I got the car, the seats were filthy with stains, the car didn't smell fresh, the dashboards looked like they had never been wiped down, and the back bumper of the car was cracked. But due to time and the fact that I had gotten a good price for the rental, I noted these items on my sheet and took the car. To make things worse, many of the employees were just standing around in the parking lot talking and on their phones instead of cleaning the cars. After driving away with the car, the low tire pressure light came on. I called the rental company 5 or 6 times and no one answered. I took the car back to exchange it the next day. She wanted to charge me $10/gallon for the gas I had used. I informed her that I should not have to pay given that I was inconvenienced by having to come back up to the airport. Additionally, I informed her that had someone answered the phone, I would have known to refill the car before coming back. I didn't know if they would simply replace the tire or give me a new vehicle. They finally gave me another car. Five minutes after leaving the lot in my "upgrade" the low tire pressure light came on in that car as well. Again I called and again no one answered. I will NOT rent from this company again. Do yourself a favor, pay a little more money, and rent from a more reputable car company that actually cares about their vehicles and the safety of their customers. PS--All of the people who assisted me said that they don't even work for Payless. They worked for Avis and were just "filling in." They also said that is why no one answered the phones. If this is the case, where are the Payless employees?

We rented a car from the Payless Raleigh/Durham airport location. Our flight was delayed so we called the location to make sure they would be open. We were assured that they were there until 3am even though it said they were open till 11pm online. Once we arrived there was no-one there for us to pick up our car we had reserved. Instead we had to rent one from AVIS (they are the same company) at twice the price of what we had reserved. We were even told by the shuttle driver that brings you to the rental car lot that this happens on a daily basis. They must tell you this on purpose so you are stuck paying higher prices when you arrive. Very shady operation and will NEVER use Payless again.

I booked our 2 week rental through AARP and was quoted $572 for a Midsize SUV. At the counter the agent said it would be $670. When I questioned him about the difference, he said AARP must not have included the "local surcharges" and he said he could lower it by $44. After waiting in line for 45 minutes I said OK just to get going. The car we got had an exterior wash, but had not been cleaned on the inside. Some trash still on the floor and it needed vacuuming. But the biggest complaint was the cigarette smoke smell on the inside. It was bad and everything we wore for 2 weeks in there picked up the smell. I will never rent from them again.

Booked on line and when I came over to pick up my car was told I need to provide proof of residence (a utility bill) This was not mentioned in the contract or anywhere else on the site. The receptionist was totally unhelpful and indifferent to what I can do now that I'm stuck at the Payless counter with no car. When I asked for her name she responded with "Talika" and when I asked for the full name she just repeated "Talika" again. This was at RDU on Saturday September 10 at 1:30pm (if anybody from Payless reads this and wants to find out). She then informed me that ALL rental companies wil ask me for a utility bill. Needless to say I drove out 20 minutes later in anAvis car. Yay Avis. Payless never again !

Terrible. Hidden charges. Expect your rental to be double the price after they add in all their fees. Car stopped working and wouldn't turn on. I called the roadside assistant number only to get referred back to the exact same telephone number I called! And then hung up on. Car started working mysteriously and I was able to return it. Our original full-size sedan smelled like cigarette smoke. We worked with the customer service agent to switch out the car. We smelled 3 vehicles, all of which smelled like smoke. We opted for the last of the three cars because we would have had to pack up all of our stuff and get a shuttle to a different car lot. Service was awful. The only person working the desk thought that it was more important to text on his cell phone than it was to greet me and move with some sense of urgency. I never got a greeting or smile from him. We won't be renting from any Payless location again.

PAYLESS CAR RENTAL--Washington Reagan and NEWCASTLE ,delaware airports Very bad Customer service. No backup from AVIS or BUDGET After getting flat tire changed by aaa to a temporary donut , car was not safe to drive back to place of original rental Washington Dc far away from Atlantic city. Spent hours to find how to return the car or exchange at avis/budget/payless location near Atlantic city. Telephone access was not possible.Was not offered any location for exchange near Atlantic city. Was told not possible to return even in big airport location in Philadelphia. Someone said go to nearest Payless NCL Newcastle delaware location 80 miles away..Drove there. They did not want to handle this but they called fleet manager at Philadelphia airport and advised us to go to Budget counter there. Budget counter said i was at a wrong place . They finally accepted the vehicle but no exchange. no receipt. no closing of contract. Never rent from Payless as Avis or Budget who own them and have a common counter refuse to honor Payless contract even in case of emergency.

The agent at Raleigh Durham Airport was exceptionally nice. However, the car was absolutely filthy and smelled liked marijuana. Was already late and had to accept car. Took many pictures of the car before I left as they had no more damage report forms to fill out. Before returning the car I actually cleaned the car as I was afraid to return as-is out of fear of being charged. I was lucky enough to have the same rental agent who was very apologetic... HOWEVER now I just found another charge on my card for $46.00 for no reason... when I call they keep saying their system is down... WHAT A JOKE! I will be disputing the charges... they OWE me money for detailing their crappy car...

We waited an hour in line. It seemed really inefficient. They were understaffed and seemed to be low on cars. Everyone was frustrated and one guy blew his top because he had to wait (and pay) for a car that wasn't yet available. NEVER AGAIN he stormed as he left, adding "Jerks". It would have been less annoying if the counter staff had thanked people for waiting or offered to upgrade or otherwise compensate for the long delays.

The actual rental agreement portion was quick, but the people outside could not figure out what was going on. They lumbered around, brought the wrong car out, and said nothing to any of the people outside waiting for their cars. Bas customer service. There are other choices.

The prices might be lower than other agencies, but beware, they're tacky and the agents use slick practices at the counter to get more money out of you. I reserved and prepaid for my car online. I didn't want ANY of their optional services (insurance, gas, etc.). I was able to catch the fact that the agent tried to charge me $38 for the option to bring the car back empty (no one ever brings a car back on empty). She had to reprint the contract because of it, but she still managed get one by me. When I returned the car there was a charge for roadside/road hazard protection on the receipt. The agent failed to explain this to me as she quickly went over where I needed to initial on the contract. I filed a complaint online and of course they used the fact that I had initialed for the service to not give me a refund. I tried to reach a manager at the RDU location, but I was unable to because they have this tacky phone service that never connects you to anyone and won't let you leave a voicemail message. Terrible!!!! Lesson learned......don't trust these agents one bit.....READ EVERY WORD OF YOUR CONTRACT BEFORE YOU INITIAL ANYWHERE AND SIGN IT! The car was fine except for the fact that the exterior was dirty even after just being "washed." Also, there was this tacky box in the windshield that contained a toll payment card or sticker. Will I rent from them again?? Maybe, but I will be the biggest pain in the a** before I sign the agreement because I'm going to read every word on it!

This service can be very incovenient. The money you may save may not be worth the headache. It is my third time renting from them and there is always an issue. Last ti.e I returned tha car with a full tank and they still charge me a fee. $10/gallon. They gave me the car super late, but they charge an extra two hours because I didn't return at the time it was orginally marked. Check in and check out was over two hours. I do not recommend this service if you are trying to enjoy your trip.

Takes more time to get your vehicle and on a few times the put two people on the same vehicle witch I am thinking that there system should not be able to but who knows then if you have a flight before 7 am witch they are not open Avis is able to check you in but you are not able to get your receipt and you write your email address down and play the guessing game on when you will get it and call and yes we will get it to you and still nothing

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. HIDDEN FEES AND UNEXPLAINED CHARGES- My experience here was very misleading and I was lied to by multiple parties. Do not book this company through Expedia or a third party. The quote and confirmation they give you online are inaccurate and you will be charged additional fees upon arrival. Never have a rented from a company that hides fees or adds on surcharges after my confirmation from Expedia. My quote upon pick up should have matched my confirmation from Expedia $47.74. The first bill that Thomas showed me upon picking up my car was $99.28. I told him that I absolutely did not want any additional insurance or coverage with my vehicle. He explained that the Gas Service Option of $28.53 and Estimated Optional Services Tot Taxable charge of $11.98 would be removed if I returned the car with a full tank of gas. That still left a discrepancy of $11.03 from my initial confirmation (Taxes and a mystery surcharge that should have been included in my initial quote), but he was unable to provide me with any further explanation so and I signed where he told me to sign .The Chevy Malibu I rented was fine except there was absolutely no washer fluid and I had to buy my own. I called the phone number twice on my receipt to let them know at the rental location but there was no answer. I returned the car with a full tank of gas. Upon return, Jasmine was the only customer service rep at the counter. My final bill came to $88.76. It should have been no more than $70.79. I showed her the amount of $17.97 and explained how Thomas assured me that it would be taken off upon return with a full tank. Her response was that she actually worked for Avis, not Payless, and could not help me. She suggested i call customer service. Customer service over the phone has been of little help and I am still trying to dispute my charge. I have since canceled a future reservation I had with Payless because of this frustrating experience. From hidden fees to additional charges and a lack of help or accurate answers from anyone associated with the company, I strongly advise not to use them for car rental.

This is the worst place to rent a car from. I ordered my car online for 173$ for 4 days which was the lowest I could find. Upon arrival they said I had a two car seats, a navigation system, and some other up charges. So the guy checking me out claimed he was removing all of these things,and printed me a new contract and the bill ended up twice as much. I asked what all the extra charges were and he told me those would be removed when I returned the car. None of the charges were removed I have called the corporate office which was no help. They claim one price online and add twice as many charges when you actually get there. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY IT IS THE WORST.

Stood in line over an hr to get the car.Nine people in line and one of the two agents at the counter leaves,great customer service.Problem is the amount they charged me when I returned the car was not the amount they quoted me when I picked the car up.Was told I would have to go into office if I wanted to dispute the bill,8 people in line and I had a flight to catch. My reservation was for the car to be picked up at 5:30,I arrived at Payless at 5:15, stood in line till 6:30(they did not offer to credit me for the hour I paid for but did not receive).When I brought the car back they charged me for 3/10ths of a gallon of gas,I showed the attendant my gas receipt but it made no difference,he said car started with 15.5 gals and I brought it back with 15.2 gals. If you notice ,response from customer service to each of the bad reviews is to call the toll free # so they can look into your problem.Good luck with that,the call center must be in a third world country because they can't understand you and you can't understand them,and looking into it is all they do,no resolution

We were going to spend just one day in Raleigh, NC. The rental price was super affordable. It took a few minutes standing in line at the rentals office, but after that everything was smooth, we got a good quality, clean and gas economy car, for such a good price. Long line...one employee. He name started with aT and he was very helpful. The car check engine like came on the same day so I took it to Auto Zone and they said the thermostat is bad. So I called them and no one picked up so I am going to try the road hazard service number is found on the agreement.

Getting the car was fine, but when I returned it, there was no one at the counter (despite assurances that there would be someone). A week after returning the rental, I saw I was overcharged by over $30... likely for gas, though I filled up before returning the car (and have the receipt to prove it) I called to dispute, and no one ever picked up the phone. Finally called the main Payless #, what a joke of a "customer service" that is. Still not resolved. Never renting from Payless again.

Honestly one of the worst experiences in my vast car rental history. They didn't bother to have an attendant working - which made it very difficult to pick up said rental. Once the Avis company provided someone to assist (since we'd been waiting FOREVER & we'd called every number of every manager possible - since none of the numbers for Payless work). The SUV was like driving a large box on boxes. I should have gone back in to exchange it bc is was not road ready, but I was so afraid no one who ever help, I did the maintenance myself). Then I made the fateful error of leaving something behind. If you rent from this company and something happens to you or the vehicle - don't plan on anyone recovering either of you. Ever.

One person at the desk, who’s been there solo for 8 hrs, during a peak check out time. Waited in line for 90 minutes to get to the desk and now for 15 minutes to get out of the parking lot! Shame on management for under staffing. Never. Again.

Good rental rate however, it took 25 minutes to get to get a car, a Nissan Sentra. After departing airport and about 20 minutes away on Hwy 40, dashboard warning lights came on indicating car needed oil and tire pressure was low so I e exchanged car for a Masda 3. However, all this took time and I miss my visit to the Duke Gardens. I do not recommend this rental car agency.

What began as a horrible experience (one person working; 5 people in line in front of me, yet it takes an hour and 45 minutes to get thru the line and checkout; people ahead of me rental's had expired tags or broken AC; a lady returning her car was charged for gas when the tank was full upon her returning the rental, archaic rental process), turned out to be a success in the end. My car was clean, actually almost new, everything worked, and I was charged properly! As long as they have more people working the desk next time, I will rent from them again!

I had a great experience. I was picked up in the shuttle right away and brought to the rental. I was traveling with an infant, a giant car seat and my luggage alone. I was quoted approximately $71 for a 5 day rental, so I wasn't expecting much and I went into it expecting to pay more and have a not so great experience, but couldn't beat the price. The car was ok, it was clean, beyond some stains. The people behind the desk were pleasant and hilarious! They were efficient and fun to work with. The car had amazing gas mileage, we did a lot of driving and only had to fill up once. When I returned the car, the gentleman was so polite and I was helped right away. He saw that I had a lot to deal with with the baby and the carseat and all. He printed the receipt right then and there and drove me to the airport terminal himself instead of making me unload and take the shuttle again. He helped me upload all of my stuff and was very nice. In the end, I was even charged $6 less than I was quoted! I would use them again in a heartbeat!

Poorly run car rental facility. I got here after reserving a vehicle online. They required that I pay $200 plus the rental fee. After speaking with the gentleman for several minutes and trying to navigate having to pay that fee, he said that Payless would not waive that fee even though it was not published when I reserve the vehicle. I asked to speak to a manager, he said I'm the manager. And it's our policy that we don't wave that charge, he said if you had paid online, then you could have got in the car for only a $100. After being up for over 24 hours I went ahead and went to another facility. I got a better car & also only had to secure the vehicle for $100. I wonder if they get off on not being able to help people? Almost like they like to see you stranded at an airport. Go to Budget

As I went to return my rental they said their computer system showed the rental as not having a full tank even though I had topped off the tank not more then five minutes before. Claiming it was a computer error they told me I must stand in line and talk to them to avoid $50 charge, knowing I had a flight to catch. I will not be using their service again should I ever return to NC.

Just Say No. Booked 4+ weeks ahead with a pick up time of 11PM. Received e-mail confirming the reservation. When we arrived tonight - Payless office was closed. Really? Why would a company accept a reservation for a pick up time when the office is closed at that time? No rental cars or local hotel rooms available surrounding the airport. A LYFT ride to a hotel 16 miles away = cha-ching. Just say no. Just say no.

The reviews are ALL TRUE horrible service, lots of hidden fees even if you don't ask for it. Got a car off priceline got quoted one price them show up and they give you another price. Like $166 on priceline then you get a receipt saying $250. Car was $100 a week with fees and gas they wanted $150 for a total of $250. The fees were more then the car rental. 2 extra charges they hit you with when you pick up car one is a $6 roadside protection a day and second they charge you for a full tank of gas ( if you return full they take it off, but you go inside and wait in line to get it taken off) If you tell them you don't want protection because you have full coverage insurance then why would I want roadside assistance? Because it's standard procedure to charge customers for this even if they don't want it. Lesson learned don't rent cars from here

This was the worst car rental company I've ever used. Not only did I have to wait in line for 45 minutes when I arrived to pick up my vehicle, but their "system was down" when I returned the vehicle. As a result, I was provided no receipt and had only a copy of my rental agreement. I was assured that I would receive an emailed receipt within the hour. That hour came and went. After an hour, I tried calling the phone number on the rental agreement. No one answered. I cross-referenced this number against the number on the company website: same number. I tried calling this number at least 6 times from 9am to noon with no response. At noon, I called the 1-800 customer service line. The customer service representative informed me that my "reservation had expired" and that a receipt could not be provided. She told me I would have to get ahold of someone at the rental counter because it was likely due to the mistake of an employee. I explained that no one at the counter would pick up, which was why I had resorted to calling customer service. She insisted she could do nothing. When I insisted there must be something she could do, she put me on hold and created a "trouble ticket" in the customer service website. She explained that I would be emailed a receipt once someone higher in her chain addressed the ticket. Three and a half hours later, still no one was answering the phone at the counter, and I had received no email. I checked the trouble ticket on the website. Another customer service representative closed out the ticket and added the comment, "Reservation expired." In a last ditch effort to contact the employees at the RDU Payless, I called Avis (co-located with Payless in the same building). A very helpful representative at Avis confirmed that the Payless phone number on my rental agreement and on the website was wrong; she provided me the correct phone number. When I got ahold of someone at the Payless counter, he said he couldn't find my rental agreement. He asked me what kind of car it was, when I returned it, and when I picked it up. I had enough when he asked me what the mileage was when I turned it in. When I asked why he was asking for all the information that their employees should already have, he further explained that there was no record of me ever renting a car and that there is simply a hand written note by the computer that said I had a rental out. He asked again, "Have you turned this rental in?" He assured me that he could not provide a receipt until his manager closed out the rental in the computer. The employee is unable to do that and must have his manager do it. When is the manager due back? "I don't know, he'll email you." I explained that I'd heard that before already. I asked for the manager's number. "No, no, no. He'll close out the agreement and email you a receipt." When? "When he gets around to it." His exact words. It's scary to think I could have just kept that car and no one would have known. Good luck proving anything in court with a hand-written post-it. I wonder if the manager or owner knows what kind of mess he/she is dealing with. What irritates me is that without a receipt I'll be forced to foot the bill since the government won't reimburse me without an itemized proof of rendered services/delivered goods. Even worse, this was a government contracted rental. It's a shame that our tax payers' dollars went into this company's pockets. Payless Car Rental has the worst customer service I have ever encountered. This was the worst rental car experience ever. Save yourself the hassle and go with Avis on the opposite end of the counter.

DO NOT ever purchase any pre-paid gas. Make no sense to purchase 18.5 gallons worth of gas for a 13 gallons capacity car. They expect you to come back to the station with an EMPTY TANK, unless you fill it up before coming back, otherwise they will keep the whole things. Why would they even offer this option?!? I was under the impression whatever I don’t use will get credit back to me, but I guess not. Try to scam you for every pennies because you try pay a dollar less than their competitors

Long line, horrible car and teaser price quote. They quoted me a price for a four day rental of $86. Total or the for price was over$200!!!! The car they car me sounds like the weekend bearing are ready to go!!! I will never ever tent for Payless again.

Rated a 1 because there is no -1!! Everything that could go wrong did! They gave me a car that had been wrecked. Tire sensors and other sensors in the car did not work and kept saying there was a flat tire. Then computer was incorrect and registered that I drove 26,000 miles when I hadn't driven 300!!!!! Nearly missed my flight because the horrible customer service!!!! What a miserable experience - DO NOT USE!!!!

Super slow checkout. They service all the AVIS customers first, so when AVIS customers keep showing, up you're out of luck. They also charged me for an extra day and claimed I didn't return the car full, when I did (and have a picture to prove it). I called to ask about this and was a told a manager would call me back, but no one ever did. Pay the extra $1-2 and go with another company.

Wow - I wish I had read the reviews before booking with Payless. I reserved a full size car and was given a Malibu < NOT A FULL SIZE CAR. I asked for a Impala and was told that is a "premium" car. I had a reservation and a price before hand, and the price at the counter was nearly $100 more. The attendant "comped" me $25 and said a gas Service option would not be on my final bill. I checked my receipt this morning and the gas service option ($36.45) was there even though I returned the car full.

The experience was just awkward and I would give negative star if I could. I made reservation through the phone than when I got to the location they were not able to locate my reservation so I had to do it at the office, and guess what, the price was higher lol. Such a cheap trick.

Sorriest bunch of cheating MFer's at Denver Airport I have dealt with. I told the clerk I did not want add on insurance, but would take the gasoline charge and he said initial where he checked. I turned it in with 1/2 tank of gas=$48 wow at $2.59 per gallon, that KIA must have a giant tank, that equals 18 gallons. I will never rent from these cheaters again.

Had reservation for economy car. Arrived at rental counter (shared with Avis) at 5:54 pm. Stayed in one line behind 10 others. When I got to front of line, noticed there was another small sign that said "Payless check in here." Only clerk, Tryica, said she had called out several times for Payless customers, but she must have not announced it loudly as I would have obviously gone there. I got to counter at 6:28 only to be told there were no cars available. I'm a VERY well seasoned traveler and have NEVER experienced this before. Tyruca finally offered me a 12-passenger van at same price at 7:06 and I departed at 7:16!!! I will never rent from Payless again ANYWHERE!

My Payless car rental experience and customer service follow up was the worse ever. I will never use Payless again nor recommend them to anyone. If you get a flat tire while driving on the freeway not only will they not send any help and offer a full size tire replacement. No, you will be required to change using the donut replacement and then they will automatically charge your credit card a few weeks later for a full tire replacement at inflated prices. Customer Service will do nothing for you.

I reserved a car in advance for pickup at this location. Unfortunately, when I handed my license to the person behind the counter, he stated that since my license was local, I would need PRINTED proof of address. Apparently, a driver's license with my address on it doesn't count, and a pay stub, bank statement, or utility bill was required. Since this was not on my reservation agreement, and I don't routinely carry these items around, and I was at a freaking airport renting a car, I was stranded (with an hour to get to work). The person in line behind me had the exact same problem. On a side note, I would like to extend my thanks to the person behind me in line for letting me use her computer to reserve a car from a company that doesn't require weird documentation. Major headache averted!

I booked on-line and this was the BEST price anywhere.We had no problems picking up the car in Raleigh. I asked for a free upgrade to what I had rented.I was able to move up about 3 classes. I had to wait about 10 mins to get a car but I have waited much longer at other rental places elsewhere so was pleasantly surprised. There was a line up when I returned the car and for some reason I had to go in to get a receipt and was annoyed I would have to wait in that line, but an agent just came out & asked for my email and the receipt was sent.Done!

I was told by the agent when I returned my car that I would receive a receipt via email. I never received it. It is impossible to get a receipt unless you have your car rental agreement. I don't take those with me and file them away. Who does that! I need this receipt for business expenses. I plan to call my credit card company and dispute the charge unless they can provide me with a receipt. My customer service experience with this company was terrible! The agents were not helpful, arrogant and clearly could care less about customers. I spoke with 3 of them.

I wish I had read the reviews prior to renting or I would have rented from another car rental place. Wait time not too bad. My vehicle has dings and scratches. Some of the audio speakers are blown out and make a loud buzzing pop sound that’s so annoying I can’t enjoy the radio. I was charged for the “Free” upgrade because they did not have any economy cars available. A $200 hold was placed on my card. Not a real big deal but I was not told about the amount of the authorization hold and $200 is a bit excessive when using a major credit card. Can’t get a representative on the phone regarding the $200 hold and the “Free” upgrade I was charged for. First and last time customer.

AVOID AT ALL COST. I had a 3:30 appt and there was NO one there. Flight arrived early, literally waited almost 45 minutes. Luckily the attendant for Avis was willing to help. The car rental’s interior smelled and was durty. I will NEVER rent here again. Horrible customer service.

Well, I didn't read any reviews before booking. I just chose the least expensive as I was traveling for work. When I picked up the car the young man at the desk was very friendly and gave me a choice of 2x cars. The vehicle was relatively clean, full of fuel & overall serviceable. When I returned it & got my final bill I did notice that I had been charged for insurance etc that I very specifically declined. Of course my luck was that I had stepped away from the counter before realizing & had to wait an exorbitant amount of time due to the customer in line. However, the lady at the desk squared it all away & I made my flight. I ended up needing a duplicate receipt after being home for a few weeks and called back. The girl on the other end couldn't have been more helpful. She was polite, kind & super eager to help. (even after I called back twice) All in all, I don't doubt anyone else's experience, I can only say that I would gladly rent from Payless again.

I returned my car and my final bill was 3x what I was supposed to pay. I asked why and she showed me that I had accepted the Loss Damage Waiver. I told the counter person who gave me the car that I did NOT want any additional coverage. There was a delay finding me a car and I was supposedly upgraded for no additional charge to another car. In the confusion I will admit that I did not notice the coverage was marked as accepted. My biggest mistake was trusting there employee to correctly enter the options I requested which was "no additional coverages". I believe because of the upgrade he added the coverage hopping I would not catch it and I did not. Instead of $55.96 I paid $143.70. Almost 3x what I booked online. I chose this company based on cheapest price. Why would I add a service to the contract that was more then the car was costing me per day? There customer service center says a contract is a contract. They are correct. I guess the $100 more they made on me is worth more then my future business. After the incident I checked other reviews and this seems to be a problem. PLEASE READ YOUR CONTRACT VERY CARFULLY FOR ADDED CHARGES NOT REQUESTED.

TOTAL DISASTER -AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. Had car reserved for 7 PM (arrived by plane at RDU) but have been waiting 35 minutes and there is no one at the counter. Phone at counter rings about 20 times every few minutes. All other rental places are booked out. I suspect they rented all their cars and just left.

I am not sure about the other reviews that were left here but I had absolutely no problem. I was in and out with a Nissan Sentra in minutes. The staff was wonderful and the car was in great condition. I have been traveling to many states in the last few months and went through several rental companies. This was as good as any others in terms of their service. Thanks.

RUN!! This young mans' name is Tom. He is by far the most horrific customer service representative I have ever encountered. After standing at the counter in silence for 11 minutes , post providing my ID and Credit Card, he failed to tell me he didn't have the car I reserved 2 months ago. Just let me stand there with no communication. Then as I am fielding business calls and reporting I will be late to my meeting due to this companies incompetence, he states "Are you ready yet?" Apparently he let me stand there for another 15 minutes because "they don't help customers while they are on the phone" He then proceeded to ask where I was from (I had already given him my Georgia license where I was born and raised) and he argues with me that I am from "the north", as if this has any relevance at all. I have never felt so embarrassed for a company in my life to have such a disrespectful, dishonest, rude, and cowardly employee on staff. I rent weekly and will never give any Payless or Avis location another dime.

Awful Customer Service!! Never rent from them. Their reps lied to me on numerous calls regarding shuttle service as well as also telling me to take a taxi & I would be reimbursed (all lies). They would not refund the taxi. I will never rent from them again. Waited 2 hours for the shuttle that NEVER came at Charlotte, NC. I had to take a Uber to the facility. Honestly, this probably ranks with the worst customer service I have every experienced. I will say the staff at the actual CLT location were nice but they said their hands were tied in regards to doing anything to help the situation as corporate had to handle everything and this is where all the horrible costumer service happened.

Extremely disappointing experience! The only part that went smooth was the reservation online and from there it went completely downhill very quickly. We arrived at the Phoenix airport and went to the Payless desk. There we were greeted by a long line of people, in which we had to wait over 20 minutes to get to the counter. Once at the counter we were greeted by the Payless agent on duty who was less than personable. He informed us that the car we had reserved was not available. Instead of giving us an upgrade they provided us with a steep downgrade. We were not told how small the car was and were extremely displeased when we arrived at the car lot and saw that it was a compact car. We were given a $25 discount on a four day rental and for the size difference, it should’ve been a lot more than that. I made the reservation as I handle all our travel needs. We told the rental agent at the airport that my husband would be the sole driver of the vehicle as I am going through cancer treatment and my medication makes me dizzy and lightheaded. He said no problem, and added my husband as the primary driver. There was never any mention that there would be a fee for adding him. While this was in the fine print of the contract that we signed, we feel this could have been disclosed upfront. We travel numerous times a year, and this was the first time we had used Payless, but I can assure you it will be the last time. To anyone looking for a car rental, don’t be lured by their low-cost rentals, as they won’t have the car you reserve and with outrageous add on fees it will end up costing you more than going with a more reputable company. We tried to resolve these issues with Payless directly, but we’re basically told too bad.
