Dr. Abrams has worked with my 9-year-old daughter for approx. 4 1/2 years to address a broad range of behavioral and emotional issues, including anxiety, self-esteem, OCD, social cuing and some tic-like behaviors. Dr. Abrams has a patient and practical style -- no gimmicks, just good old fashioned talk therapy. If you're looking for a label to put on it, I'd say his style is closest to behavior modification therapy or cognitive behavior therapy. Don't expect to be blown away by fancy displays of intellect and big talk. Instead, Dr. Abrams has a way of making sophisticated advice seem simple and obvious. He shies away from formal diagnosis and focuses instead on improving vexing behaviors or addressing particular fears or anxieties in context. He has an open mind and an open ear, and he seems to have true compassion for his patients. He has proven to be an important advocate for my daughter at her school, providing advice and guidance to her teachers. He has a great sense of humor, just the right level of silly for a kid. He returns calls. I've never felt patronized or excluded from the therapeutic process, and my daughter has always come out of therapy sessions feeling more peaceful and better about herself, with practical ideas for how to move forward. I've also found Dr. Abrams's advice to be incredibly useful in helping me change the way I behave as a parent. I've referred a number of friends to him, and all have reported equally positive experiences. Two thumbs up.
