My daughter was seeing a therapist in Lexington at one of the larger mental health providers. After two years of treatment at this facility with minimal results her therapist suggested that maybe a different facility/approach would be more helpful for her. Something less box store and more personal. (She May have “off the record” mentioned the name of a place that rhymed with hominy charm) So we looked around and like an oasis harmony farm popped up. I went and visited and explained that the box-store-therapy wasn’t working. I gave them some honest background about her and her condition. The harmony farm process was explained, what I could expect, and what would be expected of me. The counselor even pointed out that she specialized in working with teenage girls with my daughter’s condition. I felt this personal touch might be the great fit our family was looking for. Because their counselors are in such demand it was recommended I set up a few months of visits. I even synced reminders on my phone.
A few days later I got an email from the therapist. She informed me that they had reviewed my daughters case and decided she would be better off getting help somewhere else. Now, I am a realist. I understand that all relationships (professional or otherwise) are not destined to work out. And if I had taken her in for her first session and she screamed and kicked and was disruptive like the child that was blowing up while I was at the farm, I would understand this decision. Or if she had simply talked to my daughter for an hour or so and then said something like “even though she is within the parameters of my specialty, I don’t think this is the facility for her” I might not be happy but I would understand and I might feel like they gave it an honest try. But they didn’t. They looked at some papers. Probably discussed notes over coffee and scones. And decided not to give her a chance.
On the upside they did recommend a great box store facility that specializes in family unification, foster care, drug rehabilitation, and uh oh yeah mental health therapy. There are even hundreds of facilities scattered between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean for our therapeutic convenience.
I’m sorry, I just expected more from any facility with the audacity to be named Harmony Farms and be located in that little farm house nestled between all that pasture. And I can’t get the stupid google reminders for all of her pre scheduled sessions to stop dinging on my phone.
Seriously disappointed
