I credit Dr. Kelsey Oster, Psy.D for getting me, my husband, and daughter through a very stressful time in our lives. I came to Dr. Oster after receiving a pretty significant autism diagnosis for my two-year-old, from a large autism center, that left me with extreme confusion. As a new parent, I was looking for a professional to tell us that what we were seeing was considered “normal toddler behavior.” Sadly, that did not happen during our first experience. I truly feel this diagnostician saw a crying, scared mother and took advantage of that. Thank goodness I spoke to other people who told me that I must get a second opinion because I would have had my daughter in 30 hours of ABA therapy; I was so scared. I did my own research and decided that The Landstrom Center would be my second opinion, and thank goodness I made that decision.
Dr. Oster and her team, Dr. Amanda Skierkiewicz, EdD, NCSP and Jessica Cruz, were the other individuals who assisted with the evaluation. There were multiple steps in the evaluation that covered more than I expected. There was nothing that was left untouched. The first appointment was an intake appointment where information was gathered from me and my husband, and my child was watched in an unstructured environment. The second appointment was a few hours long where my child was then thoroughly evaluated. These professionals got down on the floor and fully interacted with my child the entire time. Again, they watched my child in an unstructured environment and then also gave her structured, hands-on tests. In addition, the number of scales they did on my daughter and that we filled out on her as parents were extremely thorough. They made sure to cover all bases and wanted to make sure they had many pieces of data. The last appointment was when my husband and I came in to meet with Dr. Oster who went over every single detail of her and the team’s observation. Here is where they’d give a diagnosis or recommendations. This last appointment impressed me the most as Dr. Oster took almost 2 hours to go over every single scale score and observation to make sure my husband and I completely understood what everything meant. This is truly a group of professionals that do not “diagnose just to diagnose” which is unfortunately what I felt happened to us with the previous evaluation. Dr. Oster helped reassure me and my husband that the behaviors we were observing in our two-year-old were absolutely age appropriate and told us to enjoy our daughter. She even gave us some recommendations on how we could help educate ourselves more as parents about toddler behavior.
Dr. Kelsey Oster truly cares about the families she works with. Since that last meeting with her, I have emailed her with some additional thoughts and questions. She, again, has gone above and beyond in her email responses and has made herself completely available whenever I have needed it. She is kind, patient, and will make sure you're completely comfortable every step of the way. I cannot thank Dr. Oster enough for everything.
I highly recommend The Landstrom Center as they are the real deal. If there is a problem, they will certainly help in assisting families in getting the help they need. However, in our case, if there are no problems, you will be leaving with a thorough evaluation, report, and peace of mind.
With extreme gratitude,
Erin (Finnicum) McMorrow
