I've moved to Austin in Sept. 2016 and I must say that I have never experienced a more professional doctor than Dr. Matthews. My doctor that I was seeing in my home state was a truly money hungry doctor that did not care about seeing his patients get better nor did he try to offer any suggestions or ideas on helping to improve their diagnosis. My spots only lasted for 10 mins. literally. Dr. Matthews truly dedicates 45 mins. per session to each client. He has helped me tremendously. My best advice is to try him for yourself.

Exceptional! I always look forward to my next visit with Dr. Mathews. He is genuinely interested in helping me achieve my goals, and I appreciate the active listening and insight he brings to every session. 5 months ago, I imagined at first that visiting a psychiatrist would make me feel "weak" or that I "didn't need it," but seeing Dr. Mathews about once a month has been one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I can't thank the staff enough for being so kind and professional.

I called this doctor to schedule a appointment as a new patient. I have blue cross and blue shield PPO insurance. I was told that is the only insurance type they accept. I had to go through an interview over the phone with questions such as have I been treated for depression within the past x number of months, what medicines am I on, etc. The receptionist then had to consult with the doctor to see if he would accept me as a patient. Later in the day I received a callback only to have to answer additional questions such as have I ever been treated for substance abuse. I guess I passed their interview questions and was then informed about their 48 hour cancelation notice requirements and that if I canceled inside the 48 hour window I would be billed there $350 cancelation fee. I was told they would require a credit card on file and that they would preauthorize the cancelation fee. They would not schedule an appointment without my placing a credit card on file with them. Huge red flag... Based on their interview process, they FAILED my screening process. Be weary of any doctor that requires your credit card up front in order to book an appointment. In my opinion, the requirement of a credit card over the phone and preauthorization of the cancelation fee prior to scheduling an appointment raised a red flag for me.

Simple put, Dr. Mathews is the best at what he does and has a very caring heart for his patients. It was nice to find someone in this field who actually cares about patients and is willing to listen to you and give you honest helpful recommendations.

Dr. Mathews is very attentive, knowledgeable ant professional. He offers encouragement and suggestions specific to my needs. Since beginning my sessions I feel less anxious, capable of living a normal life, and I've been doing a much better job of coping with my depression. My progress to the person I was when I first started seeing Dr. Mathews, to the person I am now is like night and day; remarkable really. I am so grateful for his care.

I’m not sure why this is the case, or why I’ve had so much difficulty, but attempting to schedule an appointment and speak to an actual person rather than a voicemail has been much more of a challenge than expected. I’ve called several times, and left two voicemails across over the last few days. First their scheduler was gone for half the week, and then whenever I attempted to call (or call back, as they did call me back after leaving a message, I was unavailable at the time to take the call) during their stated business hours, no one picked up or seemed there to take my call. This happened multiple times and was frustrating. This is disappointing as I was looking forward to making an appointment and getting established with a doctor. Dr. Mathews seemed like a good choice and still does, but I’ll unfortunately have to find another doctor it seems.

PART 1 Make sure you have time to read cause this post will be long, the entire point of this is to let you know Dr. Daniel Mathews with Austin Mind & Wellness is in every sense of the word a true healer and life saver, I don’t know where our family would be if we had not found him. We were so lost before getting to Dr. Mathews and I wish we would have gone to him from Day 1…Let me explain. Growing up my mom did everything for everyone from sun up to sun down, she kept herself busy and never did I think this would cause her to fall into a mental state where she would need a Psychiatrist. May of 2017 my mom got sick with a Sinus Infection and was given a week’s dose of antibiotics, she had to go back after that first week and they gave her another round of treatment which unfortunately never helped. She started having these thoughts that were affecting her everyday life, she would tell us she is scared to drive and we didn’t understand why. My step-dad had her take my 15 yr. old nephew with her to work…this didn’t last long as she and my nephew told us they weren’t sure of their safety any longer when she drove. She stopped going to work at this point and the next symptom of her not eating started. Her PCP put her on a HBP Med which caused even more of a spiral for my mom. We had to admit her to the ER as she was experiencing a lot of nausea. They immediately took her off the med and sent us back home with a new HBP Med which she never started taking due to a fear of choking. So back when I said she wasn’t eating anymore I really mean she stopped eating, her initial comments were she felt like she couldn’t swallow cause food could get lodged cause she didn’t know how to chew or swallow. Everything just got strange…. we took her to the ER again, blood work and other tests were done and they released her saying nothing was wrong. Days go by and she still wasn’t eating, working, cooking, pretty much every daily task had come to a halt. We took her to the ER again and I recall her saying “something is wrong with me don’t let them send me home." I didn’t know what was going on and I didn’t know what to do, I stepped out of the room and pulled the doctor aside and I asked him if he were going to just send us back home without admitting her and he said yes. I asked him to just direct me where to go next. He said he felt this was anxiety and pointed us to Rock Springs in Georgetown. Rock Springs did an assessment and said they wanted to start outpatient therapy. During the next week and a half, it seemed that she was getting worse, she was no longer talking, she would sit at home and stare at the tv with nothing on. On the last day of her outpatient therapy my stepdad couldn’t get her to get up for class and when he asked her what her name was and who he was she couldn’t tell him, she didn’t even know who her 5 grandkids were. My stepdad called for an ambulance and we took her in for the 4th time to the ER…once we got to the ER they gave her a dose of Ativan…after that dose was given it was the first time we heard my mom speak in over a month. Dr. M is very positive and earnest. I enjoy that he and his office are a very casual setting which is more like a visit w/ old friends than seeing a doctor. I immediately felt better and he's given me invaluable tools for my well being. The visits are easily scheduled and the follow up is wonderful. I highly recommend Austin Mind and Wellness.

I have been beyond impressed. Thanks to Dr. Mathews' insight and care I have made big strides over the past few months. I am approaching things in life in a totally different and better way than before. If you are looking for someone who will treat you as a person and not as a project he is definitely worth visiting. Highly recommend!

Dr. Matthews is a grounded and humble practitioner that cares, and it comes across in his demeanor. To be completely honest, Dr. Matthews is by far the easiest psychologist to visit with that I've ever had. Very kind, very caring, completely judgement free. I would recommend to anyone. Just see for yourself. -James Gore (John Smith is just my google name)

I've seen a couple of other doctors before but always felt there was no real care or concern in their work with me. After a third disappointing experience, at which point I was still struggling with mild depression and apathy, I stumbled across Dr.Matthews. From the first consultation I felt more at home and comfortable than i had with any other doctor. He was thorough and sought to understand my goals, not just put a band-aid on things. In only a couple of months I've had tremendous results, and couldn't be happier. I would highly recommend Dr.Mathews.

So far in my dealing with Dr. Mathews, my results have been remarkable. His calm demeanor and innate ability in directing you to a solution, aides in your own recovery. I firmly believe, that the key to Dr. Mathews success, is his ability and willingness to listen. This gives you, the patient, the satisfied feeling that you are directly involved in your own treatment and recovery. And lastly, not only, is Dr. Mathews a superior physician, and for my money, he is an extraordinary human being. In short, I would most assuredly recommend Dr. Mathews to anyone.

I have been a patient of Dr. Matthews for a short period of time now and the progress that we have achieved has surpassed my expectations. I am proud of myself to take the initiative to see him and I sincerely recommend his professional approach on matters of self betterment.

Dr. Mathews is simply the best psychiatrist I've ever experienced. He is truly dedicated to the well being of his patients. His empathy, care and concern is evident in everything he does. Dr. Mathews has my highest recommendation and praise. I have made so much progress under his care. I feel like he has given me the tools to finally start living my life again. I am eternally indebted to Dr. Mathews for everything he has done for me. If you are on the fence about whether you need psychiatric care, or just looking for a new psychiatrist, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Mathews as soon as possible. It will be the best decision you've ever made.

There are plenty of psychiatrists in the Austin area, but few compare to Dr. Mathews. He's knowledgeable with pharmaceuticals and skilled with talk therapy; but more importantly, he encourages you to reach beyond your troubles and become the best person you can be. If you're struggling with a less-than-optimal career or relationship situation, or a troubled past, Dr. Mathews can help empower you to make changes and set goals toward a brighter future. When we conclude a session, I''m always armed with new ideas and resources to tackle the challenges ahead. You walk a little taller when Dr. Mathews has your back. Highly recommend!

This is my first time seeing a mental health professional, and let me just say that I was throughly satisfied with the service and level of care I received from Dr. Mathews! He is such a kind, understanding, and encouraging doctor. He offers great advice on how to deal with your situation and is excellent at creating a personalized care plan for you! I don’t even think of him as just my doctor anymore; he’s become something of a friend and confidant. As someone who has a difficult time talking about and expressing his feelings; Dr. Mathews gave me the ability to do so in a safe and non-judgemental space. I would definitely recommend him to ANYONE! If I wasn’t moving to Dallas I would still keeping seeing him. Needless to say my next mental heath professional will have big shoes to fill! I hope this review helps others like myself find the courage to seek out help from him. You will be throughly impressed!

I recently met with Dr. Mathews as a new patient, so I thought I'd share my experience. A friend of mine in the area actually recommended him since she also is a patient and was happy seeing him. I also chose Dr. Mathews vs. some other psychiatrists in the area both because he actually takes some insurance (Blue Cross PPO) and because of his background experience (Hopkins + holding director level positions). Many of the other psychiatrists I called either didn’t take any insurance or the waits were often >1mo. I was pleasantly surprised when I called and his receptionist was able to get me in the same week. She was very friendly and sent me information for the visit via email, which included directions since the office can be tricky to find. One of the reviewers mentioned a preauthorization on a credit card, but that never happened to me and was never asked of me, so maybe there was some miscommunication. My meeting with Dr. Mathews was great. It’s always nerve-racking changing doctors and I really feel like Dr. Mathews didn’t rush me during our consultation and he took the time to answer my questions and explain his thinking for making his recommendations. He admits that he is conservative with meds, which is also my preference and I like that he also provides psychotherapy during his follow-up visits. I hate the docs, where you end up waiting ten minutes only to get ten minutes. My only negative thing to say is I wish his office was closer to Austin where I live, but Round Rock isn’t too far I guess and it’s right off I-35. Overall, I would highly recommend him and will post again if things change!

I had to wait quite some time to get an appointment with Dr. Mathews. I am sure glad I did. I now have the privilege of being a regular patient. I have never felt as comfortable and relieved after a doctor visit than I did after my first appointment with him. He has a wonderful bedside manner, is very knowledgeable, and it is immediately evident that he cares about your comfort and care. Highly recommend.
