Expensive and don't do anything.

They don't care about the patients and that is a very serious issue when this is a mental hospital. They never get back to you and are just overall an absultely horrible facility.

Robert Douglas

Marilla Whitney

Despite being admitted as "a danger to himself and others" for a 72 hour hold, evaluation and treatment plan, my 14 year old relative was kicked to the curb in 48 hours when the dangerous behavior continued without either evaluation or a treatment plan. The patient would have been discharged to jail if a South Dakota resident. To me this is a stunning confluence of incompetence and cowardice on the part of the staff. If your child has serious problems, don't send them here.

I learned the hard way not to talk to their assessment team! A certain person there I talked to on the phone just wanted to argue with me and hung up on me BEFORE I had a chance to respond! When I called back and responded to what he said HE called the police on me!! AVOID at ALL COST!!! When I tried to talk to a supervisor about the issue they gave me the run-around and didn't take me seriously and pretty much just blew me off!!

I am writing this for my boyfriend. He has recently moved and needed a new doctor. He was told he would need to wait two months, which was fine. They sent him the paper work he needed to fill out and he sent it back in. Then when he calls just to confirm the time of his appointment, he’s told that he doesn’t have an appointment. THEN they tell him that if he had an appointment he would have gotten paperwork!! ( which he obviously already had!!) And now, if he wants an appointment with them he has to wait four months. Obviously due to the fact that they can’t even keep there appointments straight he’s going to go else where, but just though that I’d warn everyone out there that if you get an appointment here you will want to call multiple times just to make sure they didn’t “forget” your appointment.

Jennifer M

Very caring and patient people.

Alexis Bakalakos

The staff are amazingly understanding and helpful, and are fully invested in taking care of the patients and providing a great environment.

Daniel Johnson

I've been a patient here for a year now and the doctors and nurses never listen to how I'm feeling or try to help. This is a mental hospital! How are they getting away with this!? I would not recommend to anyone to go here.

When you call for information, and they say" we can't help you" that's wonderful for someone's who's already down and trying to get help you turn them away. Don't even try and hear their story of help. I was talking to Heidi. Definitely made me break down. Horrible.

Adam W

Look elsewhere if you actually want help... I've been going here off and on for around 3 years. I never once felt like they legitimately cared about my well being. They constantly rotate doctors and many of them seem to only work one day a week at the Avera building. This makes contact with doctors difficult. The lead doctors are completely uninterested with whom they are helping and always seem frustrated if they have to spend a few extra minutes with a patient. I understand doctors and nurses are busy but every time I ask for a call back I get nothing but the moment payment comes up they are calling me everyday. They throw one medication after another to see what sticks but make sure to spread it over as many appointments as possible and even if it only 2 minutes they charge the same. I never felt like they wanted to help me. I felt like they wanted me healthy enough to stay alive but not so healthy that I didn't need them anymore. I can't say much about other places but personally I would say try somewhere else if you can. This place will suck you dry and won't think twice about suing you, I know from experience.

Cynthia B

I have a friend being held against her will there just because her husband talked to a Dr. and lied. she is a good Christian mom who is still nursing her baby and they won't let her feed him. They won't even let her speak to a priest. This place needs to get checked out.

I've been there twice and its actually a pretty nice place. I just wish their food was better and that it wasn't so expensive to stay there. Also would be nice if more docs were availiable.

Kelly Frazier

They care when nobody else can or will.

Darby Rose

Writing this for a friend. Sounds like a hell hole. They apparently act nice and friendly when visitors are around and do a complete 180 when they leave. My friend has constant panic attacks and kept passing out there and the nurses there said she was seeking attention. This is not how we should be treating people. Especially people who pay you to care for them.

This has to be one of the top behavioral health inpatient hospitals in the US that I have been admitted to. The nurses were all very kind and I really felt cared for by them. The techs were also very caring and also listened very well to any complaint or venting I needed to discuss. At first I thought my doctor was bias toward me simply because I didn't have a place to go, so I assumed he simply wanted to discharge me on that basis, however he proved me wrong the next evening when he told me the hospital was paying for my trip back to the West Side. Not many hospitals allow caffeinated drinks, especially coffee, however this hospital provides caffeinated coffe from 7am-12pm every day, as well as pop like Coke, Fanta, Etc for lunch and dinner. The food was also very good but not the best I have had in a hospital like this one. If this is the only behavioral health hospital you have been to you probably wouldn't understand the significance of all the luxuries they provide. I would definitely recommend this hospital to anyone seeking help!

Went there 4 years ago. Worst place to be admitted to. I was forcibly admitted after a suicide attempt in 2014, I had absolutely no choice in the matter. And either my mother signed the paper work to admit me or the doctor said she would. I feel this shouldn’t even be legal, as this doctor had no record of who I was nor were they my legal gaurdian or related to me. I was forced to be in a mental health center that had uncaring staff. Once you’re discharged they drop you like you’re nothing, with no contacts or advice on where to go for psychiatrists or therapists. You’re on your own. I would never recommend this facility to anyone. Especially if they’re struggling.

We really like the child psychology department. Could be more clearly marked on how to find it in the building. Had to ask because it isn't well marked. Pokestop outside front doors.

Nice place and food however last week the nurse giving me my injection used the wrong needle size inflicted more pain than nessary.

Once again I was well taken care of at Avera. Fully staffed with true professionals, they meet every need. Drs, nurses, techs, social workers , counselors, all are attentive and caring . Avera Behavioral is the mecca for mental health services in the midwest. God bless all of you who work there from the Drs and nurses to those preparing the wonderful nourishing meals and keeping the unit immaculately clean. It is truly a healing place. Thank you for making me well. Words are not enough.

Never going here again, the Drs tried to use my history of depression to get me to stay longer then intended. If anything, it's the Drs who are manipulative.

I have never had a place have so many problems with helping me help my child. Sending scripts to the wrong pharmacy and the like. The attending telling me to watch Youtube videos to be able to teach my child some skills in a certain area but not telling me what channel or who to watch...there are a messed up videos out there that do not substitute for the medical advice we were seeking. Telling me to take the child to a counselor but being unable to generate a list of good counselors to call...just look in the phone book etc. I have never felt more on my own while visiting a medical facility than while trying to get direction here. There is a limited amount of alternatives for mental help in this area. Wishing I had started looking for help somewhere else first. Started here at the referral of my child's primary care physician, now searching for other options.

Was there in July. They have a great staff. I felt cared for. You have to put in the work actually go to the classes. They check up on you all of the time. I had a brain infection four years ago so I do have some damage. This is a great place to start over again!

On 2/5/2019 my son was admitted to the adolescent unit. They discharged him 2/8/2019 when I had been told that he would be there for 7 to 10 days. My son was in tears when he was getting discharged and told me that he wasn’t ready to leave and that he needed more help. Of course, they did everything they could to get us out the door. At one point I was even crying too. So we walked out to our vehicle and we both got in and my son had an anxiety attack and he had not been taught any skills at this place on how to deal with his anxiety. They let him go way to early, even his normal therapist has said so. One of the therapists, Dr. Gometer, told him they were releasing him because we didn’t have insurance and that it was costing $3,000 per day for him to be there. First of all, the doctor should have NEVER told my son that, he has enough that he is dealing with right now and doesn’t need to worry about that too. And, I was never told that my son was being discharged because we didn’t have insurance and that it was costing me $3,000 per day for him to be there. DO NOT, and I really mean DO NOT send your child to this place!! They would rather get paid then to help your child.

Horrible staff. Their program is MADE to have returning patients. They're very suprised to see first timers. Had one nurse degrade me in my room as I tried to complete my daily task. If your child is sent here, don't expect to see progress. My stomach hurts at the thought of other kids having to repeatedly visit this place

Evan Ekstrum

I wanted to leave as soon as I spent my first night at this facility but I was not allowed to as I was forcibly admitted. This place is so similar to a prison in that I was never allowed to leave my room unless it was time for meals or “therapy.” I later learned from my parents that the nurse told them that I “needed to suffer” in order to get better. If you genuinely care for your mental health and want to get better, stay away from this place. What they do here is criminal.
