Today was my first visit to Barrier Island Psych. I am so happy to have chosen an establishment with such caring and supportive staff. Dr. A was wonderful, very knowledgeable and a very genuine person. The staff went above and beyond even days prior to my visit when I felt as though I was having a crisis situation. Katherine, Charlie, and Stephanie, all helped out with my situation with prompt and dedicated care! Looking forward to my continued care with Barrier Island.
If you suffer from mental illness, DO NOT go to Barrier Islands Psychiatry!!!! The office staff display no sense of skilled training when dealing with patients battling mental illness. They are rude, condescending and show ZERO empathy when dealing with patients. My daughter was criminally neglected by the doctor and staff, causing her to go almost 3 months without medication. They even changed her appointment time WITHOUT even speaking to her, so when my daughter showed up for her appointment, she was rudely informed SHE had missed her appointment....what actually happened, is the doctor was called away so the office staff just arbitrarily moved my daughter's appointment to a day earlier. When she showed up at the originally schedule time, she was made to feel embarrassed in front of the entire office, as if it was all her fault. The FIRST thing that staff person should've said is, "I'm sorry, but your doctor was called away, however another doctor can see you.". THAT didn't happen. My daughter was told she had missed her appointment (the new one that she wasn't even informed of). My daughter had an anxiety meltdown, as she was being blamed for the error. She immediately left and spent the next 45 minutes in the car, crying hysterically to me on the phone. No one made an effort to follow her and let her know it was THEIR ERROR and a doctor could see her. NO ONE!!!!! I called to speak to the Office Manager and all I heard were EXCUSES. Never once, did I hear, "I'm so sorry this happened. How can I help?" All this doctor's office cares about are booking appointments and making money. Their level of actual patient care is ZERO. PLEASE! Do not let your loved one go here for help.
great place for help
The doctor was good and helpful but his staff at his office is incompetent. They don't follow through after you are finished with your appointment. Two times I was left hanging without pills that I needed that were prescribed to me. I had to go to the Emergency room to get results after numerous attempts to get the doctor's staff on a Friday. Then once again a month later they promised me they wouldn't leave their office on a Friday afternoon till I got the medicine I requested 3 days before. When you can't sleep due to a pill they prescribe and they pretty much don't care to the point you have to go elsewhere to get help is reckless. You go there to get help and they could care less when you expierence side effects due to the medicine they prescribe to you! Their medical assistant is full of excuses and blatent lies. I don't see how she still works there. I ended up getting my refills after I moved and my mom ended up spending $50 to overnight the pills to me from my orginal CVS that wouldn't transfer them to another state. My new CVS down here pretty much told me the medical assistant lied right to me giving me false info. When you can't trust a practice to serve the public in the way they are supposed too it makes you wonder how they can be so lax and careless. Do yourself a favor and find a different practice. Nothing but problems and I am generally a carefree and patient person, but they don't care once they get their money from you. Sad, but true! I learned the hard way.
Dr Alex is one of a kind she’s extremely helpful & kind ! Thank u for helping me get my life back !! Also the staff is amazing extremely pleasant, helpful & kind . Also the office itself is a beautiful and clean friendly warm environment!
Doctors that understand and care.
Dr. Magro as well as the other staff members are very helpful. Great place to get help with substance-abuse related problems. Psychologists and Psychiatrists available. Administration needs organization, i.e. calling back in a timely manner, relaying mgs, etc.
Very good
Dr. Alexander is the best. she’s so kind and down to earth... I’ve seen her for about 3 years now. I hate going to the doctor but it’s not so bad when she has an awesome dog chilling on the couch next to you. The staff is very friendly and helpful too. There’s sometimes a cute dog in the waiting room.
The best place to go to get suboxine great doctors caring people
Decent doctors, office staff both incompetent, uncaring and mgmt evidently will either not train or hire enough people to both answer the phones and return calls.AND they change policies weekly so that they will flex their "policy" to allow being booted for having a $20 balance for 7 DAYS. First time in my LIFE i have ever dealt with such things.
I have been going for years and have found the staff to be not only caring but fun as well. There are some loose dogs occasionally which helps calm me down when I have an occasionally bad day. Julia Rodriguez, whom I see, has been very helpful and no nonsense with me in terms of explaining things to me, which is exactly what I need. She is gentle while be being caring but still a very helping mentor. For me I don't need someone to hold my hand, just someone to walk with me, occasionally explaining things to me as I walk down the path of life and for me I have found that in her. I cannot recommend her highly enough. The office staff has recently changed and I have found them to be far better and more on top of things as of late. They two make things really fun and relaxed for me. I very rarely have anxiety going to see my therapist, which really help!
Updated: 4/9/19 This place has been extremely accommodating with my treatment. They go above and beyond to make sure your getting the right treatment to battle addiction. Mrs. Rodriguez has been great to me, and Charlie and the rest of the front office always make sure things run smoothly to accommodate my treatment. I recommend this place to anybody that is battling addiction and wants to live a healthy, productive life. Update: 4/9/19...Well after being a patient for several months, I have to admit things aren’t working out nearly as smooth as they were when I first started going here. I get a monthly Sublocaid injection, that is delivered straight to Barrier Island from a specialty pharmacy. It’s very expensive and to make sure it arrives on time you have to keep track and communicate with the insurance company and the pharmacy. I literally have been doing all of that myself. If it wasn’t for me getting on the phone and calling around my injection would be 2-3 weeks late every time. Very frustrating to deal with, you would think with all the money I pay to them they would facilitate my narcotic injection medication, but they don’t. It actually amazes me that the insurance company and the pharmacy talk and work with me over the phone as easily as they do, it’s a narcotic and I’m an addict! My doctor Julia Rodriguez has been great, but the staff that work under her, most of them anyways, need a wake up call or need to get paid more or something. They have been extremely accommodating about getting my medicine filled to make sure I never run out, even in a pinch. I was suprised to read other reviews about cancelled appts and leaving people without meds, that has never happened. If it wasn’t for working with Julia I would be leaving 1 Star, but she has been excellent so she alone will bring it up to a 3.
I have suffered from depression since childhood and have been through about 2 decades of an attempt to find proper treatment. Coming to Barrier Island Psychiatry was about the best decision I ever made. For the first time in my life, I found both a nurse practitioner and therapist who made my life a little bit more manageable. Julia was great - she talked through things with me in order to figure out which medications worked and which ones didn't. Claire was a god-send. I don't think I will ever find anyone who listened as well as she does. She worked with a variety of issues and treatment options, and gave many different helpful suggestions (books, phone apps, movies even!) She introduced me to DBT, and I don't think I'll ever want to do CBT again! Overall, I'm sad that I'm no longer working with the people at Barrier Island. I moved across the country and have had a hard time finding people with the availability, techniques, and ability that the people at Barrier Island Psychiatry.
Claire D'Andrea at Barrier Island Psychiatry, working in conjunction with Dr. Constance Alexander, have been instrumental in facilitating my personal growth. Claire is empathic and bold, never judgemental or unduly sympathetic, demonstrating only clarity and a strong sense of purpose. Claire and Dr. Alexander have encouraged me to make my own tough choices. The mix of compassion and boundaries required to help sensitive, intelligent, complicated people demands sturdy mental health as well as spiritual connectedness. I believe Claire taps deep resources for my benefit. I highly recommend Claire and Barrier Island for those willing to learn and practice skills to resolve inner and outer conflicts. I'm very choosy about whom I trust, and I trust Claire and Dr. Alexander. They are excellent healers of people, and I consider their witness and care to be a unique privilege.
Cancels appointments regularly with little to no notice leaving you to suffer without meds. Office staff does not return phone calls either. GO ELSEWHERE!
Great, caring. Dr. Alexander is the best!
Would have given a zero had that been an option. I was completely humiliated by the office twice. This practice does not care one bit about it's patients. I went for over two months without medications due to errors with appointment scheduling. They will reschedule your appointment without telling you and then it's your fault when you show up to the appointment you thought you had. Then they would like to charge you $75 before you can make any more appointments or get any meds. They sure make mental health care more difficult than it already is. I battle with severe depression anxiety on a regular basis. Would not recommend this practice to my worst enemy. Find a Doctor Who will actually care about you and your well-being not just another appointment slot and co-pay. The women in the receptionist area could really use a lesson in manners and how to speak to a human who is hurting and needs help.
I own a psychiatry clinic nearby. Barrier Island has helped me build my practice. Also, they have provided advice when i asked, and their clinicians and counselors are amazing. Not to detract from my own nearby clinic, Barrier Island has an emphasis in addiction psychiatry. As such, the ratings they have achieved are remarkable. It’s a great place to go, - Erik Cantrell MD
Dr. Magro is the best. Really helped me get my addiction under control and helped save my marriage.
Dr. A helped saved my life. The entire staff is outstanding and don't look down on you at all. Best doc hands down Four years going.
Just had my first visit. Julia was great, she listened excellently and knew exactly what I was going through. I left with a treatment plan and a prescription after my first visit! I feel confident that i will get the help I need here. Highly recommend to anyone that is nervous about getting the help they need.
