REVIEWS OF Clarion Psychiatric Center IN Pennsylvania

Mike McGhee

Unbelievably unprofessional staff. After speaking to me about my wife and telling me the reason she is being released is because of a”whooper of a bill” even though she is having thoughts of harming herself. I’m then hung up on. I make repeated calls back to no avail. Finally get through and the nurse then tells me they haven’t permission to speak with me about my wife after they already have. God forbid that my wife ever needs psychiatric care to the point of hospitalization again but I would never take her to Clarion again. The staff is of low caliber bottom rung people. Disrespectful disgusting facility.

I don't even know where to start ... the staff is terrible they don't listen to family requests your were promised trying to blame on other employees when a family member tries to commit suicide they don't call the family ...it's four hours away and you don't what's going on and they don't keep the family updated

As a person well-known for his whole reality oriented to self-betterment and stability, therefore stable, this facility is being reported for abuse; a doctor in violation of Title 18: 4903(a)(1) of PA Crimes Code, False swearing in official matters, for lying totally about my psychological condition, my behavior, and what occurred during the evaluation, due to bigotry, during an official 303 court proceeding. There is much more to this story. This facility has a relative cohesion of evil; much of the facility are cold-hearted and mentally unsound their selves, and they do not care much about the patients. They're focused on money. Furthermore, poor treatment. I struggled to contact organizations to help me with my rights, but have found Adult Protective Services and as of now The Citizens Commission on Human Rights.

Never ever will I let her came here again! You didn't prepare her for the real world! You left her think the world is how it is in there it's not! I spent about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks in this facility about one year ago. Having spent time previously in psyciatic facilities before Clarion, I really had a very bad predisposed idea of what I was in store for. For the first three days, I was beyond apprehensive about what to expect because thus far it had been a very professional place and it really felt the people legitimately cared for you (whereas in other facilities, you felt like an inmate). Once you let your guard down and could take it all in, you really could settle in and feel comfortable. It was a very overwhelming feeling to know that people there cared. There is a steady routine and it's very easy to catch on. Food was amazingly better than the standard institution type food that you receive at most other facilities. They go above & beyond to really try and make sure that their patients have a basic quality that can be its own therapy to a patient because the food isn't poor in quality. You get ample quantity as well and you never leave feeling hungry. . What I found amazing is that they bring in mental health technicians and do not rely on doctors & nurses to be well versed & educated about mental health. These mental health technicians (MHT) are specifically trained to deal with those that have mental illnesses. The staff as a whole treat you as a human being that just happens to be a patient. There is a lot of dignity dished out by the staff, even when people with more serious illnesses have their symptoms come forth. The variety of different activities range from music therapy (which was just amazing), art therapy, journaling, group discussions, gymnasium etc. For those that are smokers, they again realize that in itself can be something that is therapeutic to a patient and they take the time to take those that wish to smoke time to go outside in a courtyard and smoke. Sometimes opportunities like this were great because it gave some good time AWAY from the medical setting and for the patients to talk amongst themselves and socialize with each other. I found a lot of times, a 15 minute smoke break was the best group time to have because you got to learn about each other and realize you weren't alone. One thing that was a little daunting at first was that there was little downtime. You were always busy during the day doing something....but you got to realize that too was something that really helped keep the mind busy and you valued having something to do that would exercise your brain. They also allowed people to ease themselves into therapy at their own pace. While attendance is strongly urged, they don't jump down your back at the first moment to get you to attend groups. They don't punish you at all for not doing so either...again, they don't treat you like an inmate. You are however strongly encouraged to take your time in easing yourself into the routine and are rewarded for everything from making your bed in the morning, showering, attending groups, etc. When I was there, they had a point system for pretty much everything there that you did. If you did something wrong, you never had points taken away as a punishment because they understand that sometimes when you lash out, it's because it is part of your illness and that should not be something you are punished for. What this place really felt like was a controlled stay at a getaway with psychiatric care as an amenity. It's really hard to describe without really being there, but it was really the benchmark in my opinion as to what a Behavioral Health Unit at any hospital or facility should be. You felt loved & cared for without being babied. You didn't feel enclosed like you would in a hospital psych unit. I live well over 120 miles from the facility and they drove me home from their facility and informed me that if I needed to return due to a relapse or some kind, they would come pick me up. I was really dumbfounded to be honest at the extent to which they care to the point they'd make a 240 mile roundtrip just to ensure my safety if I chose to return. I

The best staff and THE BEST facility in the state God Yes

The facility and staff seem ok enough but they have NO therapist or psychiatrist for the youth at least. A social worker and a group session is the only mental care they provide for them, other than medication. The only thing Clarion Psych does is watch you so you cant hurt yourself. If you feel you or a loved one would benefit more from talking to a therapist or psychiatrist I would recommend looking at different options.

They have helped myself and my son so much. Very thankful.

The staff enjoyed making fun of people with Serious issues! Dr. Almanzar will call you a liar, he believes that he is above you. And he pushes sychotic meds on those when it was unnecessary! Horrible experience, will never recommend. I believe the Dr should become a patient for a few weeks!

Medical kidnapping of my son while enrolled at PennState. A nightmare experience that has yet to end for him or his family. I feel like he is North Korea without hope. They are denying him the right to be treated at a more qualified facility in his home state with family support. They have created an enormous burden for him and have compromised his health in the process. How does this happen? How can this constitute care?

arnie betts

You guys are pathetic. You have medically KIDDNAPPED my wife. We sign for 5 days and it has been 12. Lawyers are getting involved as she is fine. She went in due to medication reaction throwing her into an episode. Now you guys won’t let her call us. You won’t let us speak to her and you keep sedating her.

I only rate this 5 stars so people can see from another perspective of just what places like these do. For years personal opinion has hindered the American youths mental health (And physical health!). I've been to this psych ward twice, the first time I was only 15 years old and I was scared out of my mind, I ended up befriending a trans kid half a year younger than me who'd developed some form of psychosis prior to my release. In my time there which very fortunately was only a week thanks to me being so terrified of staying longer I forced myself to repress my feelings and emotions until I could get out, I witnessed many of the kids around me progressively downspiral emotionally thanks to the slow and tedious treatment as well as the fleeting hope of maintaining a (somewhat) regular life. I recently found I may suffer from mild ptsd when expressing myself in any non-introvercial way, I strongly believe having to deal with places like these as many times as I have only made my mental health worse. (Luckily I was able to deal with my emotions thanks to my family and outside counceling). To any parents looking to send your child to any of these places, whether doctor requested or not. Please talk to your child or try to put yourself in there shoes. Times are very different now and unless we accept that as a society the mental health crisis in this country will only continue to worsen. These hospitals will never substitute the help an attentive parent can provide. (To this day I still struggle talking to my parents, siblings, or anyone about the issues I might be dealing with. The only people I blame are the ones who keep a failed system like this going without even an attempt at understanding the people who have to suffer because of it. For how many more years are children going to die around me, how many more years will I hear about my friends killing themselves? If your system works so well please FIX IT!)

I was at this facility about a few weeks ago and my experience was great. The MHT's, RN's, and LPN's make you feel like family, the food is great, and they let you out in the courtyard to smoke, even if you don't smoke, it's still feels good to go outside for some fresh air. The social workers really helped me out as well. Albeit nobody wants to be in a hospital, but this is my first choice and recommendation for I or anyone else that's in need. 5 stars.

Just very unsatisfied.

Alicia Lostetter

The psychiatrist that I had to encounter was horrible. He had no respect for me and practically called me a lair. At the time, I was 18 and the psychiatrist refused to let me go to the adult unit and found it necessary to consult with my mother on the subject. I felt like I was in a prison designed for small children. I felt worse being stuck in there for 2 weeks than I did before I entered the facility.

Meagan Yellott

I do not recommend this facility. They suffer from a lack of consistency, lack of communication, and lack of follow through. They do not offer individual psychiatric care. This is also not a dual psychiatric and rehab program which I found out too late. They did accommodate visiting hours which was my only positive experience.

Natalie Rounsville

I stayed there for 3 weeks when I was 17

My boyfriend was put here voluntarily with no 302 in his file and the day of his discharge a 302 magically appeared which he wasn't even present for said 302 hearing... Next day he gets 303ed...this place is a joke to get a hold of people I swear I gotta call numerous times to get a hold of my boyfriend, you never know when not to call, visits are way too short especially when you live far and lastly they give false hope for release date...I myself have been to psychiatric units and was never kept this long. DO NOT RECOMMEND

Rosa White

I was there for 10 days and I can honestly say it was the best experience even tho I disrespected staff they always were still there to help me. The adolescent unit staff was the best. Some were just there to be there and others were there to help. I definitely recommend this place. You won’t want to leave when you’re being discharged. And yes I did write a review Carson

paulstallion48 .

Even though it has been over two years since I was there. I've been in a lot of inpatient psychiatric units. This is far the worst one ever. Forget about trying to sign yourself out. It can easily in a heartbeat go from voluntary to involuntary against your will. Yet if you still don't do what you're told to do by the Dr. you will be threatened with being sent to the state mental hospital which is only more damaging than good. That could be up to 3 to 6 months straight and also the add of additional time spent there waiting for the transfer. I just wish that they get their acts together and learn to respect the patient and not abuse it. Because the dr thinks he's above everyone got news for you dr karma is a B-t-h you will be judged in the same way you judge others no matter how sick the patients might be. On a little positive note the staffs are wonderful. I can always see the stressful situations in their eyes of what the patients have to go through and including staffs because of the Dr. bs. The reason why when you're first admitted there you do not get any of your regular meds for 24 to 48 hours. Therefore purposely setting patients up for mental breakdown so that dr can find more reasons why treat you in a way that you don't approve of it. But from my experience I would never recommend it to anybody. Is best to read the reviews to save yourself long-term headaches and more potential mental health problems that could cause more harm than good.

The kids unit seems really underfunded, taking in consideration that they don’t have a psychologist, psychiatrists that are rarely there, and they have med students as the "people to talk to when feeling down".

This place saved my life. They took the time to adjust my meds and make sure I was good. They were caring and understanding. Plus if you're a smoker they have a lot of smoke breaks so you don't have to suffer.

Tj Elder

This place hires people that were former patients, then on top of that give them a job for the second time, after this person went to jail for meth... seems like the patients are in a real safe environment

Aimee Marie

This place is horrible! First of all I went here to get a medication adjustment. The FIRST Dr. I had, I told him I just need to to maybe increase my antidepressant and make some small adjustments with what I have till they start working again. This pos tells me that he can't prescribe a medication to make my life better?!? So I explained that I have a mental health diagnosis and this was not a matter of having better willpower. He then went on to say that I was delusional because I believed that and my thinking was irrational and that this thinking would lead to death. At this point I was mind blown. You would think that I asked the man to prescribe me some kind of narcotics? No just a raise and lower some antidepressants for severe depression and bi-polar. So I ended up switching to a much better Dr. but I couldnt see him as often as I needed to an all of this contributed to a 2 n 1/2 week stay for something that could have been just a few days. Most of the time there u see the nursing staff and they are all rude but in a passive aggressive manner. Dirty looks, making u wait 2 hrs to get towels or do laundry. The only good thing for me was that you can smoke. Not only can u smoke but if u don't have money or cigs they provide some kind of cigarettes for everyone which is really nice for someone if they don't have any, but if i had to guess I would say that idea defiantly comes from upper management to keep people there because at the end of the day it's all about money to every person at this place. super long story short, just go somewhere else this place is really really bad

I've been here twice and both times were incredibly helpful, I was on the adolescent ward and most of the Staff were awesome and really fun, the doctor was cool too, it's been a while so I can't quite remember his name though, I also spent time at the Meadows which wasn't horrible, but not as good as here, the groups were very helpful, and the connections I made with other patients were fantastic, if you or someone you know need somewhere to go, I'd recommend Clarion.

Becca Sicilia

I was there around this time last year and I was treated very well by staff and than returned Aug of 2017 and it's the only hospital I will go to

Dawn Ernst

This place is unbelievable they do more harm than good they do not do have of what they say the staff is the ones that need the help holding people against their will. They love to lie and play head games. This is not a good place to be .

You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave. Beware. 201 becomes 302 if you dare to fill out a 72. 302 becomes 304 so fast it is magical. Enjoy the food, veiwing nature through the windows (beautiful), and hold on tight to a couple of staff you find that you trust...... and remember, the patients are not the crazy ones.

I hate it murders were there ask why they have no bathroom doors or why they over medicate us kids
