REVIEWS OF Unity Center for Behavioral Health IN Oregon

I was admitted for three days and doped up on I don't know what. Then I was released without explanation and still very confused. To top it off they decided for whatever reason to steal my audio recorder instead of returning it with my belongings. The place is nothing but a giant room filled with recliners to sit amd sleep in. No counseling no diagnosis just drugged for days. The only good thing about the place was the nurse staff. The worst was the security suited up in full gear running in and out with no regard for others space or issues.

Kari Basting

Unity is joke they don’t help. They turn homicidal patients out on the streets. Unity is completly useless , only after the money the get from OHP!!!!!

Tim Franklin

One big room full of recliners. You're supposed to sleep there with about 40 other people. Conversations going on all the time. One night there was MORE than enough. The next day I was transferred to a different facility in Vancouver Washington. The new hospital sent me home in just a few hours. I firmly believe that my time at Unity did more harm than good.

Austin Rodrigues

Don’t go here if you are suspected of being Borderline they will think you are faking your issues. I don’t have a true diagnosis of it and I was told they were intensifying my illnesses because of admission

I brought a friend here who was having significant struggles with their mental health. Just about a year ago, I had needed a place like Unity but it didn't exist in Portland, there was only the ER who would turn you away until you slit your wrists. She was in for about 30hrs, was never admitted beyond the PES facility [their sort of long-term intake area where you are officially under their care] and was able to be stabilized on medication during that time and released without being admitted to a room with a bed [which, to my understanding, is for the most severe sufferers - I saw a woman who was having frequent seizures wait 12hrs for a bed because they're so full]. The next few days while she was acclimating to the medication away from the relative safety of the Unity facility, I started to see her light shine again, and it was amazing to see! Helped me realize how much I was still struggling with my own depression and anxiety, and after repeated attempts to seek care from Cascadia Behavioral Health in SE Portland only for the doctors and nurses to sow an abusively neglectful relationship resulting in an overwhelming breakdown resulting in erratic, impulsive, and dangerous behavior as well as homicidal and suicidal ideations, I made the necessary decision to seek care from Unity. They were able to have me medicated within 24hrs of being there, during which time I was able to get my necessary OTC medications [though, yes, it did take a few hours as things need to be okayed through their hierarchy], and the nurses were super helpful in finding gluten-free/dairy-free food that I could safely eat. Adrian, in particular, was very helpful. I was discharged and told to retrieve my prescriptions from a local safeway, but upon arriving there one of my prescriptions wasn't sent over. Spent 30 minutes on the phone with no success, as the Good Doctor Christoph Miller had already gone home for the day [not like he works in an emergency facility or anything! Or.... wait...] and would not return until the following day. "No sweat," I tell myself now medicated and not ready to erupt at the first sign of dumbassery. So, I call back the next day and get the same runaround to a phone with no voicemail, that just rings indefinitely. The Good Doctor Christoph Miller had assured me I'd have enough until my followup appointment, and considering the time it was taking to call in every day and that I had a few benedryl left in the medicine cabinet to compensate for the missing sleep-aids that were prescribed, I waited a day or two, until today, to call back. Today, I, however, discovered yet another screw up by The Good Doctor Christoph Miller upon finding that I only had a single dosage left of my anti-anxiety medication. Since I take 9 capsules per dose, the quantity of pills that was left was very misleading and thought I had more than what was there. Apparently, when The Good Doctor Christoph Miller wrote the prescription he wrote it for 3 days, not the 2 weeks he assured me it would last. No problem, call back and I'm sure they'll be able to fix it. Prescription ran out today, morning of 8/19, was supposed to last until 8/29. After speaking with Adrian, one of the nurses who was always extremely helpful and hunted down some edible food for me, I find out that The Good Doctor Christoph Miller is out until the 28th. Will they delegate my care to another doctor? No, they won't. The only viable option I have is to wait 10 days, no unmedicated, for my doctor's appointment on the 29th. I'm going to do what I can to be seen sooner than the 29th, but if you've dealt with clinics covered under OHP, you'll know there are few of them and they are, generally speaking, very very busy. But hey, at least my last dose helped me focus long enough to write this review.

Lets get this out of the way- If you go to Legacy, you are in a very dark or difficult place, where all manner of traditional routes of care have been exhausted and this is the bottom line to get treatment quickly. Mental health is not a one stop treatment like a broken leg- its a long winded process that takes time to do. For those looking for immediate treatment, you're not going to get it no matter where you go. I was admitted here involuntarily thru Zoomcare who deemed my condition beyond their scope, as well as the Hawthorne Center for mental health. They look the necessary precautions of making sure we were all in scrubs and had nothing on us that would harm either us or the staff. I was put on a 24 hour mandatory hold for observation and I tried to occupy the time with whatever activities they had. When I was there, I would say there was about 30 people, so it was slow to get some attention. In the span of the 24 hours I was there, I had 3 nurses check with me, 2 doctors, and 2 social workers who developed a care plan for me to follow to get the very necessary treatment for my condition. The night I was there, they started me on a medication and followed up with a second one, both of which I am still taking today for my condition. I am still seeing the psychiatrist they recommended for me and even explained my FMLA benefits should I get any backlash from my employer. They were all very knowledgeable and understanding. Honestly, I don't know why people complain about being admitted to what is essentially a psyche ward. Yes, its unpleasant. Yes, you are in a large room with recliners and blankets and pillows and all you can do is watch TV and color or draw (which is what I did), but this seem's to be the best way to keep an eye on a large number of people in the safest of circumstances, as private rooms will be difficult to monitor on a minute to minute basis. These people work 24 hours around the mentally ill on a variety of spectrum's and not once did I see them stressed or upset, even when people were flinging coffee onto them or screaming in their face about how they're going to get sued and will hear from their lawyer. There are police there 24 hours with the staff to deescalate situations. This place and these people are here for you to get better, in the best and most medically efficient way as possible. I'm sorry that some people were expecting the Betty Ford clinic level of luxuries and amenities, but you are here to get better. This isn't a hotel, its a hospital for the mentally ill. And this is the best way to do it, bottom line. I am wholeheartedly giving this place a 5 stars, because without them I wouldn't be alive, and I certainly wouldn't be thriving. And maybe its because I work in the medical industry I have a different perspective on how providers have to work and how the system is run that could be clouding my oh so very unbiased review. However, if you need immediate treatment for a mental health condition that's above everyone else's paygrade, go here. It will literally save your life.

Fightcraft

Good thing to remember is you could wait several weeks in a Portland emergency room to just be admitted. Now to wait a few days or less at Unity with food available and recliners is a massive improvement comparativly. But welcome to Obama care, it will only grow worse from here.

Andrew Granger

I've read all the negative comments but it was Unity that saved my brother in law. He was on a path of destruction. They got him on meds that actually brought him back to his normal self. I give them all a huge 5 stars.

Mothdog

Just a place for addicts to sober up. Not for mental health care. 0 help, 0 service, 0 standards.

My daughter came in under voluntary two days ago with severe suicidal ideation. She had two different plans two to commit suicide. She has attempted suicide in the last six months and spent the last OD cost her 12 days in ICU from recovering with liver failure. With understanding no beds were available at Unity, she was committed to staying in the PEZ until one became available because she feared she would try to attempt if released. The care team saw her behave “normal” while in the pez. We told her she did not feel the pressure from the outside but once released she would and her feelings of SI would return. Until we could get her a new therapist we requested she be admitted for her own safety. They said no and wanted to discharge her ASAP. When I went to pick her up there were 2 security guards on both sides of her while she went to the bathroom to change clothes. They also escorted her to the door. Now, I have been trained as. NAMI mental health advocate. When a person is under mental stress or is suicidal they are screened to be a harm to themselves, to someone else or to property. So why the security guards? They obviously deemed her threat to someone or something and she still said she was worried about killing herself, but out the door she went with discharge paperwork and NO SAFETY PLAN IN PLACE. This is not a place to take your loved ones in severe mental crisis. They don’t listen. They don’t take one seriously. But sure enough we will be billed for two ER days with no care at all done. Thanks but no thanks, Unity.

I checked into unity twice this summer for episode of psychosis and ocd, among other things. I hadn’t slept decent hours for about a week and was hallucinating, I was only there for two days until I checked myself out because they wouldn’t put me in a room, I was so panicked and concerned about myself not getting a bed or any privacy when I first came so I left because I thought they weren’t going to do anything more for me then help me calm down but not be treated. I tried an intensive out patient program they recommended but my condition became worse, and became Manic and had to check myself back in again but this time I vowed to stay and wait. The people at the hospital put me in a room so quickly when I got there for the second time and I spent 10 days there recooperating. I felt so hopeless checking in for the second time but came out feeling so much better. It’s been 8 months since, and I am stabilized on meds, and I am so thankful unity was there. patience is a virtue.

Unity is the perfect place to get your facilities back, and they help you through it with full dignity intact.

This place is a joke . The state needs to investigate

What a nightmare.

I had a good experience when I went there a while ago, met nice people, and some staff were very kind.

Horrid, like stepping back into the dark ages of Oregon State Institutions. Shame on you Oregon! I guarantee the suicide rates have skyrocketed since the politicians and insurance companies colluded to create this horrific monstrosity. Shame on you Oregon!

Temujin Herrera

Overall a good facility once you get past the pes, one of the only impatient facilities that allow the use of your own personal cell phone or tablets. The food is all right, although they used to let you pick from a menu this is no longer the case. They have groups throughout the day. They have television rooms are usually shared by two people but there are single patient rooms.

Complete and Utter Hell. This was my first visit to a facility like this and it will also be my last. Reception refused to discuss billing and coverage with me and I've been fighting a bill for $4k for 5 months. You will be treated like a mental invalid, you will freeze, you will be hungry, you will wait 12 hours to see a doctor who will explain you "simply need more sleep!" and you will then be drugged and expected to sleep in a large room full of people doing really sketchy things, like dancing in front of water fountains with blankets over their head, running amok to where nurses cannot keep up, and grasping at invisible things in front of paintings. You won't be admitted. Anything they promise is a lie, ranging from a cheese stick to a referral to a Psychiatrist ... but hey, they'll do a bang-up job keeping you away from string. Next time I find myself in the deep black I'm going to the pub. I will never be dehumanized and lied to like this again. Fooled me just once, kiddos!

Joanna Bartlett

I read all the reviews while driving up to Portland to visit my child in the adolescent inpatient unit. My child was there for almost 3 weeks (which is longer than most stays) and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of care he received. The staff here are compassionate and treat the kids with empathy and kindness. I saw staff de-escalate several situations with kids quietly and with empathy. The unit itself is extremely safe. They've clearly figured out all the ways teenagers can find to hurt themselves and removed them. My child was treated with respect and kindness throughout his stay. As his family, we were treated well, too. Unity offers a lot of support to families while their child is at the unit (discharge instructions -- and what to do if your kid doesn't follow them -- could have been better). I felt my child was safe there and getting the help he needed.

Lori Estes

I'm changing my review from a 5 star to a 1 star all because of my sisters case worker Christina Ivy, if this is your case worker I am so sorry. I was calling my sisters case worker for the first time to explain to her an interaction I had with my sister. I called yesterday and left a VM, she did not return my call, so I called again this morning only to have her snap at me saying " I got your message but I can't give you any information" I said to her 'I know that but it does not give you an excuse to not call someone back". She is MY SISTERS case worker and I have lost all confidence that she is able to do her job proper, are you unkind to my sister because you sure had no problem being rude to me and I've never even talked to you.I understand Hipaa laws, I don't have to agree with them but I understand them. Don't assume all people are dumb Christina because it makes you look really bad and to me completely unfit to do your job. Maybe next time show some kindness, you chose this job not me, you did. NOW DO IT RIGHT!

Tony Cundiff

I had a good stay at unity the first time I went. The next stays. Not good. The staff literally wrote down something diffrent than what I said. Or at the very least. Twisted my words. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Jessica Hall

"THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE!'' Instead of genuinely caring for those who are in vulnerable times in their lives, STAFF PLAYS RUDE EMOTIONAL GAMES towards the patients. I was sleeping on a reclined chair and FELT VIBRATIONS on my PRIVATE REGION. I had instantly awaken to WITNESS all the PERSONNELS IN A WEIRD FROZEN MASONIC STANCE; They shifted quickly as if nothing HAPPENED. THIS IS A PLACE SOMEONE SHOULD OVERLOOK. TO seek good proper mental care for assurance PURPOSES.

A disgrace to the City of Portland and the treatment of our mentally ill. It has been open only 1 week and its already a failure. Who is responsible for this mess? I have a meeting with them tomorrow. I want answers and I want change. Please contact me, if you want to change the way this system works. I will respond immediately.

Elijah Dickinson

Horrible. Would not recommend whatsoever. Who would have thought that a behavioral health facility would be so bad for people who actually needed assistance? Terrible service, the food here gave me food poisoning, the staff take too long to acknowledge your requests, and don't intervene when needed to do so...

Gregory Martin

Yes everyone nos that sometimes I really hate going to any adult psychiatric hospital anymore but am under so much stress lately thanks to the,F.B.I. and secret service that I really am thinking more and more about suicide and self harm iuess and really think it mit be a very good idea to be put into one of units adult units for away before I really do go off of the deep in.

They blanket prescribe Prozac and seroquel to keep people sedated from what I experienced. I was told I would be anle to use my phone to write down some phone numbers, only to find out* the nurse in charge of my case rejected it; only to find out meaning no one ever stopped to inform me whatsoever. I went to Unity after being sent to, what I was told would be, a crisis respite center that turned out to be closed, and not even related to the service it was said to have been, making Unity my only option. When discharge finally came around I was sent to a religious shealter, after stating that I am LGBTQ+ & GNB, which felt like a huge slap in the face. This was my 2nd lifetime experience where this has taken place and seems like a common practice amongst mental & behavioral health hospitals. In the future, if I have to choose between Unity and the streets, I will choose the streets; at least then I can use my phone and not feel like an insane person simply for trying to get my life on track.

Kiya Rial

Update: Now only treats -if you will harm yourself -if you will harm others -psychosis -strung out on drugs All others crises need not apply- you’ll be sent away or only kept (grudgingly) if you have an over the top reaction. Also, now they won’t give you your benzos. Enjoy the unexpected withdrawal and fall out. May 2017 This started out well in January but has quickly gone down hill. Not enough staff, staff are overworked, internal phone system is a total joke. MHTs are helping each other get through shifts and then have to work the next shift as well. There's no money for extra staff Regence BCBS isn't paying a dime (a conversation I've tried to have 3 times with reps there and they waive me away), and the cost for a night in a lounge chair with no privacy and 31 other patients in your space is $2000 more than any other ER. It takes too long to get a bed (again, staffing) and the idea of 'trauma-based care' is going out the window. The other city psych wards should never have closed. This was supposed to be overflow for a city already inundated. At least half the population is homeless and also can't pay. This is not sustainable. November 2017 I’ve upgraded to 3 stars- compared now to medical ER, Unity PES nurses and doctors helped clarify what the ER wouldn’t, and gave me safe refuge in which to recover. They’ve also worked out their billing problems and decreased the price by $1000.

I began dissociating again in Portland, but I was able to call the Crisis Line before I became severe. They sent a Cab to take me to Unity Center for Behavioral Health. Everyone was nice, but I don't think they understood how warped my mind really is because they did not keep me. They wanted me to stay with my local mental health team back in my home town. I really don't think Unity took my conditions seriously. Perhaps you have to have a drug addiction in addition to mental illness to get into that place. It's the same situation everywhere. The drug addicts are readily accepted while those with just a mental illness are released back to the streets. I need help that I am not getting and I am ashamed of the mental health treatments in Oregon. Come on Governor Brown! Get everybody the help they desperately need. I am sure Unity Center for Behavioral Health does the best they can, but one month after my visit there my local Psychiatrist diagnosed me with Schizophrenia. Unity Center for Behavioral Health should have kept me. I would appreciate a response.

My past behavior at unity adult psychiartic hospital was very bad,but they do make me feel very safe&secure by giving me my adult psychiatric medications, sometimes involuntary injections, but they do try to put me into a secluded restraint room, wear I feel the safety at,all the male, female psych nures and psych doctors and psych counselors are very nice.the last #3x that I've been there you guys make me feel very safe.thanks(Am a Transwomen and as being that when I go to unity I feel safer there as a Transwomen cuz all of the lady psychiatric nurse are all very good dealing with me and accept me as a women.thanks ladys

Best Hospital if you struggle with mental illness. Dr. Meehan saved my life! She really cares and so does all the staff at Unity Hospital. :) For the first time in my life, I actually feel better (with the help of adiquite community support, and appropriate medications). Thank you Dr. Meehan and Everyone!!!

Thank for being open and available.

This place has thievery among them speaking of the staff. My daughter was admitted there with a $700 iphone day two the phone disappeared and now they have denied her claim.

I'm a late-teenage female, I stayed here over the holidays (xmas and new year) in 2018-2019. Overall better experience than most hospitals for mental health in my experience. However a nurse named Eric (I believe that was his name, blue eyes dark hair) gave me a nutritional drink and I guess I was eating too much for his taste (I was actually in starvation mode from fasting, duh I was overeating) because as he put the straw in he asked me to oink like a pig. (This was in the doorway of my room, in private like a lil b///ch lol SPEAK UP BOY

Waiting in the emergency psychiatric services until you are admitted into a room can be challenging. There are recliners and you are given pillows and sheets. Food is not an issue. You can ask for food and drink whenever and the staff will oblige you. There is TV, coloring pages and crossword puzzles. It is an inconvenience to have to ask for the restroom to be unlocked (due to safety reasons), but, again, the staff is patient and obliging. I have seen heart-wrenching behavior from patients and that's why it is important to keep yourself detached from someone else's struggles. After nearly 3 days, I was admitted into a room and I had a good experience with the staff and peers. You get a roommate, but you each have your bed and desk. The fridge in the dining area is open all the time and stocked with goodies. There are group processing classes, arts and crafts classes and daily visits to the garden. In the garden they have a basketball hoop and lots of other outside activities to choose from. While there are homless people admitted into the hospital, they are still human beings and have their own challenges to deal with. So, if you are in a mental crisis, I recommend checking Unity out for help.

TO KRISTINE TRAVIS: WE HAVE KAISER COVERAGE @ $250/mo EACH. EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE LISTED AS "PARNTER" THEY DO NO COVER A STAY AT UNITY. I WAS FORCED TO CALL KAISERS EMERGENCY PSYCH FOR AN ELDERLY SUICIDAL RELATIVE w/SEVERE DEPRESSION, SPINAL STENOSIS, A SLEEPING DISORDER & FINANCIAL WORRIES. THEY SENT THE POLICE & AMBULANCE CREW. POLICE INSISTED ON A MANDATORY COMMITMENT. KAISER ADVISED US TO HAVE HIM TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO HILLSBORO. WHEN THEY INFORMED ME HE WOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO UNITY @ $200 A DAY, I INSISTED HE BE SENT TO THE FREE KAISER FACILITY TO NO AVAIL. HE SAT IN A ROOMFUL OF UNITY BARKALOUNGERS FOR 3 DAYS W/VERY LITTLE INTERACTION w/THERAPISTS. 5 DAYS LATER HE WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO BROOKSIDE TO RECOVER FROM UNITY. DESPITE THIS MISMANAGEMENT INTERVENTION, HE IS WORST THAN EVER. KAISER'S NONPROFITEERING CEO MAKES $10M A YEAR, WHICH IS 5X WHAT AN ADVANCED DEGREE CITIZEN MIGHT MAKE IN A LIFETIME; 10X FOR A DWINDLING MIDDLE-CLASS CITIZEN. KAISER DOCTORS GET A KICKBACK OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEMBERSHIP FEES & CARE PROVIDED MEMBERS, SO IT'S IN KAISER'S INTEREST TO DENY SERVICES, LIKE SENDING PATIENTS TO UNITY INSTEAD OF BROOKSIDE OR PREFERABLY AT HILLSBORO'S EMERGECY WARD. EVERYBODY SHOULD BE CONTACTING RON WYDEN, EARL BLUMENAUER, & JEFF MERKELEY ABOUT THE CROCODILE TEARS THEY SHED ABOUT THE STATE OF HEALTH CARE & THE MENTAL HEALTH & OPOID CRISIS WHEN THEY PROBABLY ADVOCATED FOR DAMASCH CLOSURE & CLOSING ALL THE OTHER MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES IN FAVOR OF OPENING UNITY, WHO HAS MULTIPLE PENDING LAWSUITS & FACED LOSING ACCREDITATION LAST YEAR (THEIR 2nd YEAR OF OPERATION).

I can't even comprehend how this place is covered by any insurance company. It is not legal to force patients to divulge personal medical information in a public area, and the second I mentioned that I was brought my clothing and escorted from the building from one of their surprisingly large staff of armed security guards. (Hmm??) I have spent many hours reporting this clear violation of the law to every agency who will listen, and I'll continue to do so until their Medicare & Medicaid contracts are revoked. If you want better care, you must advocate for it!!

Horrible treatment by a therapist and doc (staff). Our daughter apparently LIED on all points that were raised during our face to face. They bought it.We were treated as though we were terrible parents and I WAS told by an angry rude condescending therapist her condition was OUR fault because we wont support her choices. Lies we proved on each charge against us..Occult material and cutting are not acceptable and i wont support those. My step daughter has PTSD due to her fathers abuse. How could they not see that we are good supportive kind honest accountable Loving parents with a very hurt confused 16 yr old THEY reinforced her rebellious stand with our parental authority right in front of us.DHS then went after us hard until now.Now the facts are out.Im VERY concerned about other kids going thru there. They treated her like she was a 5yr old.I understand those that go to work there each day have a very difficult challenge. But there is a serious issue here.Im not saying all there but this was our experiance.I needed a little more time for another solution and they had to release her due to lack of beds.As soon as the immediate threat is over get your child away from there. Our experience was a NIGHTMARE.

Take away suicidal clients’ cellphones and personal items, put them in a room overnight with multiple other clients, make them sleep in chairs, try to force meds on them and then release them 14 hours later and tell them to call their doctor. You would be better off going to a hospital. Wish I could give negative stars.

Wonderful facility, wonderful staff. Every call got answered as well as every question. Thank you for helping my husband as much as you did!!

I was there twice .I went in unaware there would be no counseling or one on one therapy. Very disappointing . I also felt as if I were being treated for detox or addiction neither were the case. The staff was lazy the food was decent if u went first through the cafeteria but by the third group there was little food left a very messy salad bar and trash from the first two groups. I came out feeling far worse. Suicidal even than before I went in . I'm a chronic pain pt. Not an addict but they cut my meds by 2/3 rds right away and said I was faking severe withdrawal symptoms. Never again

Portland Oregon is lacking leadership and accountability at all levels of mental health. It's all about the money and how to steal more federal funds for OREGONS own government. These places are always more harm than good. The patients are money cows. The victims to Medicare/Medicaid fraud The psychiatrists are nothing but drug dealers Y Pritham Raj MD is one of the highest paid kickback doctors in Oregon diagnosed as narcistic Drugs are drugs, they alter the brain. The most harmful people in the world are the quacks lining their own pockets from vulnerable adults at segregated mental health facilities such as this. The mental health money need to be arranged to "follow the person" and let them choose their own treatment. It's all about the money!!!!

I personally had a fine experience here. The nurses, doctors, and professionals I spoke with were all very calm, kind, and understanding. They asked in depth questions and I gave answers to the best of my ability. Unfortunately, I did not receive the care I was looking to get here, but it seems that is because Unity is best equipped to handle acute care and help people out of immediate crisis. If you are looking for inpatient care, do not come to Unity. The care I received was good, but I wish they had given me more information on where I should go or what I should do if I want inpatient care.

Terrible place! Sorry but I think the staff acts more so much as bad as the people that are there! What a joke

My friend voluntarily admitted herself here and the staff was so overstimulating, apathetic, and rude that it made her situation exponentially worse and she wound up self harming even more. I wouldn't touch this property or any of its vile employees with a ten foot pole. I hope you all get your medical licenses revoked and I hope Unity gets shut down.

My experience was in both the psych emergency room, then in the treatment center. Fortunately, I waited only 21 hours for a bed. The treatment center was excellent. I am recovering very fast, and see others do the same. The staff is very caring and work very hard under a constant demand for major care issues. The food was more than acceptable -- healthy meals with whole grains, salads, meat, and veggies. The wait in the emergency psychiatric services was okay EXCEPT the food was worse than inedible. It was, frankly, disgusting . Their "sandwiches" were like spooning paste out of a jar, there were no salads, and when I hungrily bit down into a sausage, it was it was pretty much like 50% cayenne pepper. There are recliners and you are given pillows and sheets, and I had a good experience with the staff and peers. I don't know if I could have tolerated my high degree of hunger for any longer than I did before I finally got a room. I have put in a formal complaint about the food. Odd that the café just outside the entry way for the ER has good food. People are not allowed to order in food from the center's own café. Once I was admitted to the room, I got a roommate, and we each had our own bed and desk. The fridge in the dining area is open all the time and stocked with goodies. There are group processing classes, arts and crafts classes and daily visits to the garden. In the garden they have a basketball hoop and lots of other outside activities to choose from. So, if you are in a mental crisis, I recommend checking Unity out for help. This is a new facitiliy and service that has been sorely lacking in Multnomah County for 20 years, ever since Cascadia BHC inexcusably demolished the drop in centers.

I was here briefly during a stressful time in my life that caused me to make bad decisions. At the same time I was perscribed drug’s by my primary care doctor that we discovered were incompatible with my mental health problems. Between the stress and the drugs I had a psychotic break. When you arrive you will be triaged and taken through a security screening that is a bit intrusive but obviously necessary. Everyone involved was as professional as possible and they were aware that this is an uncomfortable thing to endure. Next you will be taken to a milieu where people with a variety of mental health issues are waiting to be seen by doctors to develop a plan for care. This is uncomfortable because many of the other patient are not aware of boundaries or have serious mental health issues. But the staff was so kind and professional. There is always acces to food drink and activities here and it did help. I can’t speak for the conditions of the rooms for patients that have to stay long term. I was assigned to an intensive outpatient program after speaking with a team of doctors (I had already started detoxing from the drugs that caused the psychotic break). The doctors first assessed my mental capacity and THEN were able to work with me on a care plan. I imagine this part would go differently based on the capacity/attitude/emotional condition of another patient. Long story short, I felt safe and cared for, and heard here. I would be here if this place didn’t exist.

DO NOT go to this place for treatment! Even if you are just there for a medication refill, they treat you awfully. They take all your belongings, including clothes, don't listen to you, etc.

Josh Best

My first review, but people have to be warned, because I was so traumatized after being there for 8 hours. This is a psych shelter, not a hospital. I would describe this place as halfway between being in jail and a homeless shelter. If you think sitting in an open room with recliners with the meth addicted population of portland, or people just released from jail in a mental health crisis, this is the place. There is NO PRIVACY, in a psych facility!!!! After being searched, you sit in a 200sf area on a plastic chair and tell all your business to a room full of predators, criminals and homeless people. "Patients", sit around eating tv dinners and watching Law and Order SVU on the one TV. There is no therapy, you see a Nurse Practitioner (they barely have real psych doctors) then they discharge you with handouts that you could have googled. If you don't need a shower or food, you would be better off just going to Urgent care or a real emergency department. If your loved one needs help, DO NOT send them to this place. Its dangerous, incompetent and is the reason mental illness has such stigma. SHAME on this place for being the problem, not the solution. How can you be "trauma informed" while traumatizing people?

DANGEROUS The treatment by Unity Staff was so bad that it took over 30 complaint forms to cover basic offenses during the stay. The hospital is weaponized. They commit crimes at Unity habitually and cover them up with staff and Must Co. people. The situation Is as crooked and dangerous as a Nazi hospital. HORRIBLE

I want to start by saying that I understand that those who have written poor reviews have valid perspectives, and their experience may not be identical to mine. However, I really, truly believe Unity is exactly the type of care that Portland needs and absolutely a step in the right direction for mental health care. I've suffered with severe anxiety and panic disorder for years, the worst of which has occured within the last few weeks. On Friday, I had a panic attack so bad that I called an ambulance to take me to Unity, despite my fears brought on by viewing their negative reviews. Their reception staff was warm and kind right off the bat, and despite their restrictions for the waiting area (no phones, you must wear scrubs, etc.), I immediately felt safe in their care. Let me just say that the waiting scenario is definitely different than a standard ER and may come as a bit of a shock to some patients. I was not completely comfortable with it, but the care I received heavily outweighed the bizarre waiting room experience. You are in a large, open room with several recliners and dozens of other patients, a staff of nurses and peer support located in the center. Other patients can be distracting and perhaps unsettling depending on their symptoms and behaviors, but they're well controlled by staff and it's a relatively calm enviornment. There's a TV (the volume fairly low) and puzzles and cards to keep you occupied, but it is a pretty boring experience overall, but I have neutral feelings about this. If you're there, you're there to get mental health care — and the staff provides this beautifully. The only truly negative thing I have to say is about their food. Yikes. Please fix that when you have the funding lol. My nurse was Laurel (accompanied by another nurse named Paul that day) and the pair of them were patient, calm, and incredibly sweet and proactive. They checked on me often and offered whatever support they could, from food to extra pillows and blankets to literally leading my dizzy, anxious self to the bathroom when I felt unsteady. Both of them almost had me in tears from their compassion, especially given my past (poor) experiences with other health care facilities. The waiting time is admittedly a little outrageous (I waited about 5-6 hours to finally see a social worker & psychiatrist), but it's definitely not due to incompetence or slownesss from the staff. And when you have that much time on your hands, especially when you can't sleep, observing is the most obvious hobby. For the time I was there, I watched staff and patients interact and was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Not one member of staff was rude, abrubt, or visibly annoyed by even the most difficult patients. When I was finally seen by my social worker & psychiatrist, I was in a pretty anxious state. They did well to calm me despite the somewhat anxiety-inducing atmosphere and were able to get me solid resources. I went in fully anticipating to do inpatient, but I feel somewhat confident in my outpatient gameplan, and that if things get worse — returning to unity is a valuable option. To anyone afraid to visit because of negative reviews: PLEASE GO IN! Get the help you need and deserve. It is scary, I won't lie, but the staff is there to help you and they are so, so sweet and patient in doing so. Understand that some people leaving reviews are in a pretty messed up state of mind and may interpret their care with an unclear perspective. Unity is competent, kind, and capable, and after my visit, I do believe that most of their pitfalls are fairly isolated incidents.

Anyone seeking treatment at this place is probably having the worst day of their life. It's not awesome. But they *do* offer folks clean clothes, endless ice water, tissues, earplugs, enough blankets to build a fort, and the time to come back to yourself (or the treatment to get you there). They respect patient wishes to not be found and even the security folks are very kind. If you're going to take a ride on the looney train, the destination could be far, far worse.

this place is deadly and socialworkers want you dead okay but they gave me one med and another med and both meds act negatively with each other

THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! Just WOW. The women that answer the phone must hate their jobs! I have called and talked to 3 receptionists. BETH is the worst! Deb is pretty rude as well. As soon as they answered the phone you feel like a burden. Deb transferred me before i even finished my sentence. When i called and asked Beth to transfer me to the nurse she snapped at me. However there is a gem amongst them. Kate is an all star. She was very professional, very nice, took her time, listened to me. This woman is what a customer service representative should be like. I am a mother with a daughter in crisis. The last thing people in this position need is to be treated nasty by an unhappy people. The nurse Maria is also wonderful. Definitely new staff needed in "customer service".

Shannon Chamberlain you are probably an employee since you wrote such a favorable long review. How can your review be so polar opposite of other reviews. How exactly did they help you if they just sent you on your way.

Kaeli Dovid

I went there tonight 8/12/17. And was told I'd have to wait. When someone is suicidal and depressed you don't tell anyone to wait. A$$h●les

I read the reviews, and was a bit concerned .... There was no need to fret... Its decent and definitly helped me.

Note: I'm not homeless with a mental illness. My 20yr old daughter-in-law was admitted to Unity after a panic attack occurred at the home. Paramedics administered Zyprexa to relax her before they transported her to Unity. After about an hour we received a phone call from nurse Kathryn who spoke to my son who was approved by the patient. My son then asked Kathryn if she would speak to me, his mother. Without hesitation, she said yes. Mind you the nurse did not receive permission from the patient to release ANY information to me but she did. HIPPA violation!! Daughter-in-law was discharged and I drove my son to pick her up. When we arrived, she sat in waiting room while incoherent and obviously taking the effects of the Zyprexa. When my son went to front desk to advise that he was there to pick her up, the front desk personnel was rude and showed no empathy. Note, she did not ask my son to verify his identity. This is a MAJOR safety concern considering the state that she was in. Anyone could've walked in and claimed her!! When I noticed the state that she was in, it was obvious that she was administered medication. I asked the front desk if she can tell me what medication/s she had been given. She then called the nurse over the phone and then came back and said she couldn't release that information?! Yet, she can speak to me over the phone without given the release?! The front desk rep rudely then told me to ask my daughter-in-law what was given. Hey dummy!! The patient is obviously incoherent and unable to tell me what was administered! Extremely disappointed with the entire experience! **SAFETY CONCERN and MULTIPLE HIPPA VIOLATIONS** Definitely will be reporting this.

My son, a paranoid schitzophrenic, was delusional and experiencing a psychotic break when he assaulted his father. His father called 911 and after a three hour wait Project Respond, the Police, and an ambulance arrived. My son was transported to Unity under a 'director's hold' and left alone in the waiting room while he was being processed into Unity. elivable There is no security guard and the door is unlocked so my son walked out and is now homeless, delusional and agitated: a danger to himself and others. Why does Unity not have a locked waiting room or security guard? Unacceptable and Unbelievable!! Now my son who we worked so hard to get help and followed the correct procedures to get him to Unity is homeless and in danger.

This was the worst hospital I had ever been in. I took a 34 year old friend, who is schizophrenic and is afraid of being killed on the streets of Portland, for an evaluation and help. She was there two nights. After repeated calls for information and usually being hung up on or switched from person to person, I found very little useful information. I could not visit since it was a lock down facility. When they decided that they wanted to release her late on Friday evening, they were going to put her back out on the street in a rough area of town. She was scared to death, literally. I had promised to be there when she got out, but there was no warning. I asked security over the phone to help but they were not much help. It was a 1 ½ hour drive from my home to the facility and after repeated calls, drove to pick her up. When I arrived, they kept me waiting another 2 ½ hours. When they finally brought her out with her clothes bag, they were missing her expensive hoodie. They looked around some, but could never find it. Don’t take any items of value in with you, you may lose them. This hospital is definitely for street people who have no one to care for them, because any caregivers are treated like street people themselves. I am embarrassed that my church is one on the sponsors of this facility.

Treat patients like animals and there is no accountability for their mistreatment. Traumatize patients upon intake. They will get sued eventually.

Katherine Raina

Very poor treatment of a loved one in crisis. Told by psychiatrist that she "needed to get her life in order." This to a suffering person in acute mental and emotional distress. I thought this hospital would be a good place with doctors who want to help. Very unfortunate.

I had a great stay here after I was a victim of crime. One of my nurses had been police officer and she was very nice and helpful. The social worker helped me greatly with resources. Almost every nurse was nice! The food was good and I was the most comfortable here than any other place. I highly recommend it. Yes, the recliners waiting to get assessed and waiting for a bed can take along and some people have to spend the night in the recliners and yes it’s scary and boring but your safe. At least there not hard chairs.

dave mowry

It is so nice to have a hospital just for those of us with a mental illness. They can't wave a wand and fix things, but they do lots of good work. Than you.

The fact that this company would hire people to pressure-wash at the back of their building shortly after 7am is EXTREMELY INCONSIDERATE B.S.!!! There are two apartment complexes that sit immediatly behind them, right where they are pressure washing. These guys are right outside my window! To use equipment this loud, this early in the morning is RIDICULOUS!!! I would give negative stars if I could!!!

hailey towner

Emergency services is very disorganized and offers very little help to those that need it. It's easy to get swept aside unless you're acute and causing harm to yourself or others at the time. If you're quiet and suffering, you will be forgotten and leave more distraught than when you entered. The PES (psychiatric emergency services) will keep you in limbo and only offer food and an armchair to sleep in if you're lucky enough to get sleep in a giant room of others in crisis. If you're seeking inpatient care they will be full as all hospitals divert psychiatric patients here, and beds are limited to those with more visibly severe cases. It's still new but much room to improve.

The place has been a blessing. During a horrific time with our son they have made progress with him. They are amazing to work with. Dr. Throiths in particular is real, compassionate and truthful. I do believe they are the reason we may actually find our son again in his chaotic world of mental health issues.

Gabrielle Gamble

Had a family member here for about a month, when they first arrived they seemed to have no problem violating HIPPA and telling me my family member was there, what unit they were in and what number to call so I could speak to them. Now, because of HIPPA(which they alredy violated by speaking to me and multiple other family members about this patient) they won't tell me where my family has been sent to or how I can find them. Only that they are "in a safe place". I'm grateful that I know they aren't on the streets but not too happy with how they pick and choose when to release your family's information. As far as what I saw while my family was here, their caseworker (Christina Ivy) was as helpful and informative as she could be given the circumstances, I definitely felt like she sympathetic toward situation as a family member. The rest staff was polite but I wouldn't say friendly and when I called it was 50/50 chance as to whether the nurse that answered the phone was rude or not.

Lisa Sare

My nephew was here for a while. They were all very nice and it's a nice building. I just wished I got a little more information as to how things were going and what was going on

I was a patient on 01/30/2019 and was in a hold for a couple day. Let me get started with no one want to be here and if you don't want help you are going to seem no to like this place. This place you have to sign for yourself to get help. So I you don't since they will let you leave because this place is for people trying to get the help they need. I was in here for two days. It's is a waiting game. You are in there for the doctor to watch how you behave to determine what is next .that is the first stage. The room is what they call the emergency room .it has recliner chairs that aren't bad to sleep in. They give you a warm blanket and pillow. And talk with you. They know that you need help and you are trying and for the people who are have bad time they try to help you out. Alot of the time they will setup a safty plan with you. And make sure you taking your meds. An dtgat was helpful because I don't like taking my meds so having people there giving me my meds was really helpful.

Jerry Chandler

called to check on the status of a female patient the charge nurse i spoke with over the phone was very rude and yelling over the phone... I will not use their services as a safety precaution if they treat their clients as they do people over the phone id whoop some ass... you guys need to work on it.

Eric Davis

In my opinion, I wouldn't allow someone I love to be sent to this facility. If your doctor suggests a stay there, in my opinion, ask for an alternative provider.

Ashlie Kerkof

The patients are tortured horribly at this location. All these reviews are from employees.

Went here a few months back for treatment of a manic episode. In the waiting room I saw the reviews, and addressed them with my intake nurse. She was incredibly rude and told me that with my insurance "this is the best you've got." She also told me the bad reviews were "homeless people who didn't want treatment." The reviews came from a variety of sources...she also said I would need to give them my phone and agree to a hold just to be evaluated. A friend had previously been here and told me how scared he was to sleep in an open room in a recliner, not a bed, and how aggressively they use restraints. My intake nurse kept insisting that these were non-issues from "homeless people" and that no questions about the facility, my care, or the allegations of negligence would be considered unless I "stepped back"...meaning the confiscated phone and sign-over of rights. Any mental health facility that is so unfriendly, abrupt and secretive until you agree to unspecified treatment, will not address patient concerns, and moreover has such a disdain for the homeless (given that Portland has many and this is their only option), seems like a recipe for abuses. Not to mention the current investigations against them for suicides...I ended up leaving. Since then two other friends have confirmed that it's a madhouse in there, not a place of help. One star to anywhere so suspicious it made me reject voluntary treatment

Jon Coz

Run from this place - the theory of it might have been good on paper but in practice it is a failuure - warehousing and poison meds - same as most of these places - a revolving door of more misery!

Brock Sampson

Only go here if you want to make your problems worse.

We live over an hour away and called to see if we could visit. When we got there they told us they were busy and could not visit. I am concerned that this place is in more need of mental health help than our family member.

They can't help you. As an intermediary. They are just wasting your time. I did however get a mouth full of pills I don't even take anymore. I'm Insulted because of what I shared. Compared to there actions. Could have sworn I had a green back or to.
