This place saved my life 7 years ago. They wasted no time and immediately changed my medications to the ones that have kept me stable. It's the nicest inpatient hospital I have ever been to.

I just completed the nighttime CDIOP program at Summit Oaks. I had a wonderful and meaningful experience thanks in large part to Zac, Kevin, Hannah, Hannah, and Nicole, the patient, understanding, and intelligent counselors who ran the groups. I highly recommend this program to anyone new to recovery as a supplement to regular AA/NA or other meetings. I found I was much more comfortable and got more out of this program than other meetings because I was around others who were also early in there recovery.

I don't know where to start. When my family member was being sent here I called with questions. The woman who answered was not nice at all and after being in the ER for 20 hours tired and worried she brought me to tears. We were not allowed to see them until visiting hours 2 days later and the calls we got from our family member were upsetting....ignored for 3 hours when he got there,no guidance given, didn't even know where bathrooms were. He wasn't even given towels or shown where they were so didn't shower for 2 days. He was ignored or brushed off every time he tried to ask a question. The unit was not very clean and a visitor was permitted to make out with a patient right in front of all the other visitors. We then had to sit and listen to him swearing and yelling at her and staff just continued to socialize with each other. When our family member was finally discharged I wasn't even given a time so thankfully I was able to speak to a very kind social worker Kayla...this was after calling and being given to admissions with a woman who was outright hostile and huffed at me annoyed and yelled at me that I'm in the wrong department then hung up on me...this is the Gods honest truth ...what is wrong with this hospital and why us there not a manager that sees this and fixes it? Thus us not the first facility with have dealt with and the other one had caring kind people in every department that went out of their way to help and make you feel secure that your family member and the family was cared about....they let us be there right after the admission, gave us a packet explaining everything and names and contact numbers to call at any time. Summit Oaks you should be ashamed of the people that work for you and the unkind behavior from admission to discharge of your patients and their families!

If you are serious about your recovery come here. If you are not serious and do not want to become clean, you will be MISERABLE here and you cannot leave whenever you want, you have to give a 48 hour notice and wait to be medically cleared. Which shouldn't be a problem unless you are super anxious (like me). Otherwise they doba pretty good good with giving you the tools needed to get and stay clean . A place can only do so much the rest is up to you . This place isn't designed to be a luxury it's designed for you to want to get your self together and not want to have to come back and start over. Just go, get clean, stay clean. And however have to go back! And order grilled cheese for all your meals . Also huge shout out to Lens I believe is how you spell his name. Amazing man. He is honest , sincere, has empathy , and really cares. Thank you so much specifically for your help. You went above and beyond with all my needs. Not all staff is like you, I wish they were.

I just called to see if my daughter could go In for detox and this nasty young lady by the name of Veria Palmer was very nasty and rude saying she well she’s going to have to make an appt we have nothing it doesn’t work that way. So insensitive and cold and disgustingly arrogant over the phone and so out of touch with people going through a hardship. Do not speak to this going lady she clearly has no idea what addiction is or how hard it is for a family so please ask for anyone else except her. She has no class nor does she have experience talking to people. Trust me it’s not worth the aggravation to talk to this woman especially wasting valuable breath on a species like her. She’s obviously very miserable with her life. Other than that I was just mad that I couldn’t say what I wanted to say to this miserable woman. Left can for Chris nick lauded as she said to me he’s a male when I said transfer my call to her. Very snobby and does not belong in the admissions dept. what if I was an addict and u tell me there’s no appts you don’t say that to someone who is reaching out for help and behave disgustingly rude and cold.

My daughter had to stay at Summit Oaks for about a week and when my wife and I went to see her on her second day, she was crying and begging us to take her home because she was feeling homesick and that the staff were being rude to her and the other children and teens in the unit she was staying in. During our meeting with Dr. Bekhit and their social worker, my daughter requested that she wants to get out of the hospital right away. By Wednesday of that week, she was out of the hospital. And when she did, my daughter was so relieved and overwhelmed with joy that she was out of there. I'm probably never going to send her to Summit Oaks ever again.

At Least They Try Nice people. Fantastic cafeteria. They are trying to do good work. They don't always succeed, but compared to similar hospitals (St Clare's Boonton, Newton Medical), they actual care and try to provide decent treatment. **NOTE TO STAFF/HOSPITAL--if you are trying to help someone recover from a manic episode, you need to allow them more than 6 hours of sleep per night. This waking people at 6am for "Vitals" does not help with the healing process, it HURTS, as with so much noise in the facility no one can go to sleep before 11:30pm-12am. How is a person who needs REST supposed to recover, if you won't allow them to rest?**

I had to get a staff FIRED. The charge nurse for adolecent inpatient was such a horrible person who didn't give a rat's ads about people's triggers. I complained multiple times and finally she was released from the job. Boys and girls aren't allowed to sit on the same side of the room? Are you kidding me? The patient rights are constantly violated and you weren't made aware of the patient rights at all.

i was there as a minor in 2009/2010. Nurse Pam and Heather were the best and treated me reallly nicely and they encouraged me to wanna be like them...this hospital sucked though

this place only increases the issues it tries to solve... or in its case, it even lacks the effort to try to help, only making everything so much worse than it was before going. Never, under any circumstances, go here

My child stayed at Summit Oaks Hospital for few days. I am very impressed by the hospital. Every person working for Summit Oaks from reception staff, Admin, nurses, therapists and doctors and others are very professional. My child was very well taken care off. I was completely informed about my child's treatment plan, therapies and other programs that were there. Hospital staff was very understanding, cooperative and helpful. I cannot thank enough for the way my child was taken care off. Special thanks to Jena (at front desk), Juliette (Admin), Susan (Nurse), Cedric (Assistant), Cylicia (Therapist) and last but not the least DR. BEKHIT. Dr Bekhit explains everything, listens to questions, spends enough time, very friendly and trust worthy. In short she is a GENIUS. I am indebted to Dr Bekhit for helping my kid as well as me. To conclude, I learnt that online reviews and ratings cannot be fully trusted.

My mother was admitted to this rehab about a week ago because it was the only place in the area that accepted her insurance and we were looking to get her into somewhere as soon as possible. So far I've been in contact with three different individuals that work in this facility and they all have been extremely rude and unpleasant. Here's a tip to the Summit Oaks staff, when communicating with a family member of a rehab patient, either in person or over the phone, chances are that family member is probably going through a tough time and you might want to try to treat them with a bit of respect and decency. Can't imagine how the patients are being treated, I wouldn't know because I've barely been able to be in contact with the mother the whole week she's been there. Needless to say, I do not recommend this facility.

Steve L

Frist off the food sucked and the staff was not nice in one way. They didn't seem to care about the clients at all. Doctor's seem ok here I don't recmmend this place to anyone

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY. If i could rate 0 stars I would. This dirty, money focused "hospital" is horrendously understaffed and feels that cramming psych and detox patients together is a healthy idea. There is roughly 3-5 minutes a day of 1 on 1 time with a "doctor" (if you can even call them that.) I came here in hopes of getting help with depression but left feeling more miserable than I have ever been in my life. Never have I been treated so inhumanely or stripped of my dignity so severely than my time at Summit Oaks. The only joy I was able to squeeze from this poorly managed loony bin was from the patients with whom I was hazed. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY.

This place is so horrible my dad went there for about a month and the staff didn't give him the time of day to talk or tell them how he feels the staff are mean ppl and I my advice is to stay away from this place

I went in with a substance abuse problem in 2014 and came out with PTSD. There are good people who work here and care. Much changes are needed as far as how patients are grouped together. I was in detox with some severely delusional patients. It was scary. I was scared to sleep at night and scared for family to visit me. Some days were structured depending on staff working while other days we watched the clock, did not have group, or anything to do which gave too much time to get caught up in delusions of severe MICA patients. Summit Oaks has potential but some staff should not be working there, as it seems they did not want to be there as much as the patients did not. Way to fast to commit patients who were working through addiction and not a danger to themselves or others. It was a nightmare for me. Thank God for few good people that work there that helped me through it.

This hospital is certainly not fit for psychiatric treatment for children or adolescents. There is zero therapy offered to adolescents that have any type of problem. The program is simply keeping the kids in a small uncomfortable common area where there is absolutely nothing for them to do. The ambiance is depressing and certainly upsetting to any child suffering with depression or anxiety. The sleeping conditions are precarious, they don't even offer something as simple as soap or any basic toiletries. I had my daughter admitted there for depression and had a hard time getting anyone to talk to me. After 2 long days of her just doing nothing at all except trying to keep away from the other kids that were there for behavioral issues. There were fights and I even witness two girls provoking fights. The staff did not do anything to help the situation. I do not recommend this place for any one that has a child with actual mental problems. It is only a place to send kids that wont behave as punishment to scare them. It is simply a prison like environment with no therapy whatsoever. I had to get my daughter transfer after I had to make several calls to finally get someone to help me with the process. This place does not deserve the one star I had to post.

Lynne Douglas

I have to jump in here. Summit oaks saved my life. It is not meant to be a resort. This is a place to heal and in rehabilitation I needed to never want to go through detox again. I was given the medication and the tools to reenter my life and continue the program they gave me

When I was seventeen in November, I was sent to the children and adolescent unit. The experience was horrific. The white cinderblock walls give me chills to think about. My first memory of entering the floor in my scrubs was of a nurse yelling to a few patients about how she hated her job. Everything about this place is horrific. We were not allowed outside at all. For about three hours a day on separate occasions, we were locked in our rooms! We were just sent to our rooms, and were watched by techs to make sure we didn't leave, or they just shut the door! And we had nothing to do. We weren't allowed to have books, cards or anything to color. We just sat there and twiddled our thumbs! Not to mention the fact that they were mixing small children with dangerous kids. I am a full believer that addicts are just as human as everyone else, but a sixteen year old addict with an arrest record and who has beaten up male nurses and techs several times should not be explaining how he takes drugs in his free time to a nine year old boy! This one nine year old girl there always kept by my side because "I was the only one nice to her there." This poor child is kept in this hell hole and has no one! This one kid threatened me if I didn't give him my Vyvanse, and the staff didn't give a damn! Sometimes they would send us to bed at 8:30 because they couldn't deal with us! IT'S YOUR JOB. This one girl was able to sneak Benadryl to her room and snort it! Are you kidding me! They had to wake everyone up at 1:30 am to do a room search to make sure nobody else had medication stored, and then did a huge room swap! Everything they did was so unnecessary when it wasn't needed, and when something was an emergency they didn't give a damn! I threatened to transfer to Carrier Clinic and asked for the forms, but they wouldn't give them to me! My parents wanted to sign me out, but they wouldn't let them! This hospital is a hell hole. This hospital is a nightmare. I HAVE nightmares about this place. Some of the things done to the kids there are inhumane. I've been in a LOT of treatment, and I know that this was messed up. I'm shutting this place down.

i went in for PTSD, the dr. shieulakowski gave me latuda, and i had a nervous breakdown. and what for? the almighty dollar.

Where do I start?? This place is an absolute DUMP with NO intentions of helping ANYONE in it! I was sent there "Voluntarily" and for 3 days it was just a money grab from my insurance. I've since contacted a lawyer who is filing a lawsuit on my behalf for civil rights violations. I've also gone back to the facility to get paperwork and the people the work in the business office didn't seem surprised about my story or my anger. Something very fishy and underhanded going on in this rat trap! BEWARE

Ebk Pistol

Place was terrible the nurses wr mean I was there in 2014 and 2016 they won’t even give cold water

Courtney Mould

I was here years ago. I was maybe 13 or 14 at the time. The place was dirty, there were rats crawling all over the place. The staff there have no idea what they are doing as well as the counselors. There were almost no "groups" or whatever and if there were there was no guided direction of them. I was drugged up pretty bad there. I remember having a girl throw a book at my head and nothing was done. I was aggressive at the time and I got up to throw the book back at her and the staff woman got up to protect the girl who initially threw the book at me. I remember having someone hold my arms back and some girl kneed me in the stomach for no reason. As I said I was drugged up so I slept most of my time there or chilled out. Parents, don't send your kids here. If they need help send them somewhere else.

My stay at Summit Oaks was very intense. They are a professional group of people of whom are not concerned with troublesome behaviors such as those not there strictly for rehabilitation. They do not babysit, they teach. There mission is to improve the sick and suffering addict so that they can function in the real world without the use of drugs and or alcohol. If you come there without the willingness to do work, hard work on yourself, you will hate it.

Sylvia

I went to summit oaks for alcohol detox, and to make an incredibly long story short i nearly died, the treatment i was getting caused me to have a seizure, I was deprived food on several occasions because I am vegan, and the entire experience left me with PTSD. I have been to many inpatient facilities in my life and this was the only one that made One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest seem like nothing.

Best place there is! Highly recommend it for treatment in detox & rehab. :)

Saved my life!! Very clean environment friendly staff Excellent Drs (Dr Belz), nurses, counselors and Social Workers The only people who gave negative feedback in my opinion are the ones that did not take the effort to personally reach out and take advantage of all the above mentioned.

WOW! Amazing that there are so many negative reviews! I am not discrediting anybody's reviews b/c I can't, but keep in mind also, that sometimes the whole place can take the heat for one employee who "bs'd" is way thru the interview. Whatever it is, I have chosen to return there 4 times, and it is a 4 hour drive for me, but it was for a reason. I still keep in touch with many people from my visits (still doing well, at that) and they had no problem with it. I found that the people who did have a problem with it usually came in with a terrible attitude and didn't want to be there at all and were looking for any excuse to leave. Let's be honest nobody is thrilled to be at these types of places, heh. I mean, I don't know any other adult in a facility who is thrilled to follow rules & guidelines while going thru the mental and physical withdrawal of drugs. I have been to 13 detox's and a few other rehabs, for which I'm not proud, of course...but this one stands out as "remarkable" ..no pun intended ;) - This place had the most comfortable detox protocol that I've ever experienced, as well as some incredible staff members who truly do care and take time to talk to you. One of the staff, Ryan, even printed off some info for me on his personal time at home and brought it in for me the next day. Staff would go out of their way and make time to talk to me if I needed it, as well as the doctors... Every single place whether it be a hospital or a business office, is going to have staff members who don't want to be there and who should not be there - I've seen it as well in treatment facilities. It's not justifiable, but it is reality . For me, I would highly recommend this place for a safe and closely monitored detox compared to many others that I've been in various states and locations. I promise you that if you go to almost any other facility you will run into the exact.same.issues. Been there, done that, heard that. Whatever you decide to do, I hope that all works successfully out for you and/or your loved one, it's so important for me to be in a healthy, understanding, and positive atmosphere during hard times. I'm very sensitive to my surroundings and quite the critic. And I loved it...I would recommend anybody there for the Detox. I cannot speak on behalf of a patient beyond that unit. But don't let only those who have had negative experiences make or break your decision. Remember that most people who enjoy the place and have a pleasurable experience with healthy outcome sadly rarely take the time to tell you about it online...Thanks for your time, and good luck God bless!

My little brother, age 13 at the time, is traumatized from his experience here. He has a mild form of Autism but went into crisis in 2015. Not only did his experience make things worse but they changed NOTHING. His meds were not adjusted at all. The poor kid has nightmares about that place and no longer trusts doctors like he used to. DO NOT GO HERE.

Cody Jco

1 start is a lot for the poor attention this institution provide to the teens, if you want your kid suffer and be worst than they really are, then this is it. My recommendation as a mother, stay away from this institution, otherwise it will devastate your family.

I have taken many alcoholics/addicts to Summit Oaks for Detox and short-stay rehab, this facility is horrid. I have seem animals receive better treatment. Outcomes are poor; I have been sober 10 years and have yet to sponsor a man that was treated at this facility get sober. Other facilities that have decent outcomes are Carrier and Caron in Pennsylvania. Recently, I have been deeply involved with an individual that was placed at Summit Oaks for psychiatric treatment. Their psychiatric program makes their substance abuse facility look premier, Your loved one will be "put on ice", aka, properly sedated to the point they shuffle to meals and participate in group therapy which is generally unguided. Patients can explore their feelings about Walmart, the next lunar eclipse, etc. Generally, the three facilities in Central New jersey which should be avoided at all costs are Summit Oaks, Trinitas and Runnells hospital.

I swear that I was assaulted by the staff there I got a black eye cracked ribs and a concussion. They would not let me go to the hospital. I'm looking for help to get justice for myself and everyone else effected by the sick staff that punish disabled people in there most vulnerable state. Jonathan storm

They discharge my daughter from unit 1 and did not write the appropriate script. She didn't have her seraquil and has relapsed again. I didn't feel comfortable getting her out however all they care about is the medical insurance covering their stay. Everything about them is about paper work and discharge immediately. they don't care if the patient is not ready. It's ashame that in this field everyone is not there because they want to be but instead just to get a paycheck and to make themselves something with their degree.

jessica c

they suck

Daniel Maldonado

This is my opinion... I believe that the staff do the best that they can. Everybody needs to realize that the staff has to deal with a lot of BS from the same annoying people complaining. I'm lucky that I was accepted with my insurance 3 times this year. I feel that the nurses and late night workers did a good job, it was the patients that made it more stressful. I'm used to hear women complaining, but grown men? It was very childish and repetitive hearing the same thing over and over again. It's up to yourself about your recovery, the detox program here is excellent. It helped me out a lot this year.

ASTROCAT123

The staff were horrible with the exception of a couple. The food is alright. There is no one on one counseling provided in the detox or rehab units. The only positive was I had a very nice doctor and she was awesome. Tight restrictions on going outside. This place does not offer any type of exercise for you. They do not have a gym. Barely any outdoor recreation.

This place has the RUDEST STAFF . Very unprofessional people answering telephones they don't even say "Hello" or they might NOT EVEN CARE what are you calling for and they put you straight on hold and kept you there for minutes repeating the same thing over and over again, picking up and again back on hold without questions. And when you finally get lucky to get someone to pickup the phone, they have the ugliest attitude, not even calling from a Doctors office helps, they treat you like crap...AWFUL PLACE!!!...Just to clarify I was forced to give one star in order to be able to post, but this place and its staff does not deserve it.

maya isabel

I was here 3 times and only because there was not a bed elsewhere. I got worse each time and ended back up in another hospital. The staff are terrible and uncaring. The doctors threatned me constantly. Place is filthy and poorly managed. I would never wish this place on my worst enemies. i am pursuing a career as a therapist now and i will never send a client here. I will advise against it

Mark Terzano

I do not recommend this facility. I'm reluctant to describe what I experienced and witnessed during my (brief) stay some years ago. Suffice to say that the memories of my convalescing at this facility are filled with pain, chagrin and regret. There was, however, one Dr. associated with the facility who was caring and competent; I would be remiss not to mention this (sole) virtue.

Jessica Hirsh

Incredibly rude, disrespectful staff. Completely uneducated in their field. This place should be closed down.

This hospital manipulates patients off of false pretenses. My brother signed in willingly for rehab with the understanding that he could sign himself out free of will. They are currently keeping him against his will!!!! As well as forcefully medicating him against his will! Let my brother go!!!!!

This Place Is The Most Horrible Psychiatric Ward I Have Ever Seen! It still gives me nightmares! I was there for 15 days and they did not know how to properly detox me. It's a prison in the shape of a building. There's a nurses station where you get your wake me up meds, then a terrible breakfast. Take a fine shower by hitting a button every minute (prison shower). Have group in the main hall where there is a small Television in a sealed box as your main source of entertainment. You get a total of around 8 cigarette breaks split up between every 3 hours and they hand you One, you can't take two! You may get lucky and not puke for your lunch. The Doctor will come and visit you, not introduce himself and talk to you for about 2 minutes, your social worker literally runs so you can't catch her to talk to her. Majority of the time she cannot help you, only her supervisor can once you find out he exists. They are so understaffed there and so disorganized with outdated filing and paperwork the place should be condemned. They have an art group, therapy group, social work group, SOMETIMES. Other times, it's the couch and the Television or go out in the day room and do crossword puzzles or draw! There is nothing to do in that place. And if you are getting sick and need a nurse 9 times out of ten you will be waiting a while before you get there attention and if there is a shift change and you need something, God help you, you'll be waiting for about an hour. People fight, hit things, scream, carry on because these staff members, this facility, these doctors, case workers, social workers, anyone that works there do not care about anything! Some of them have more issues than the worst of the worst patients there and didn't even complete high school! It's the insane trying to help the insane. Dinner time is a blast. Once you reach status two by reading your autobiography you get to go upstairs to eat disgusting, wonderful food. The saddest thing in this facility, many people are homeless, have STD's, STI's, and are just looking for a place to stay, a halfway house, anything. But the case workers are mostly useless. They can't help 20+ patients. There's 2 nurses and 2 nurses assistances. THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE CONDEMNED! At all costs do not go here. If you do, find the head case worker! Immediately and get out! Sign a 48 form if you are there voluntarily. Get a transfer to any other facility. If you land in Unit 5 (Duel Diagnostic) pray that you can get transferred to Rehab unit or Detox Unit. Then at night, you get to take another shower, and meds! Medication that makes you so tired you feel like a zombie and goodnight! You have to create your own activities to not go insane here. God help us.

Absolutelly the worst intake process. We were there almost 4 1/2 hours. The staff didn't even check on us (the family). I am sorry to say that I have had experiences with rehabs and this was absolutely the worst. We have no idea who to contact, when to contact, etc. Absolutely no information. Terrrible experience. Sorry I left my daughter there.

Great staff and medical personnel. (ONLY) Horrendous, Incompetent, Unequipped administration. Limited access to such persons as patient, guardian, or representation. Clinical Medical Staff: unavailable due to over work and responsibilities. Nutritional offerings included nothing of value. (processed food, limited options, poor ration planning, rude food staff, inability to accommodate) Instructional education regarding medical research: non-existent. 12 -step introduction from outside sources was inconsistent. (at best) AA/NA material available in basic pamphlet form. (approved service text unavailable) Recovery based material unavailable. Any reading material limited within "prison" like circumstances. Medical addiction education classes: non-scientific Religious services: Non-existent Availability of instructional addiction related material: Non existent Scheduled activity was inconsistent. (at best) Organized schedule was consistently off schedule.(often incorrect according to posted schedule) No regular physical exercise. (walking circles and ping-pong are your options) ZERO offerings of basic introduction to physical education. Regular staff non-equipped for patient population. DENIAL OF CIVIL RIGHTS. Overall: Poor Administration, Great Staff. Prison arrangements. Discharge experience: feeling agitated. lack of staff experience, billing confusing, flexible arrangements

Cecilie Claborn

No help at all. A waste of time and money. These people have no clue of how to treat anything. Insist on another hospital. Unless you want to spend your time making collages and singing. No one on one counseling offered. Patience just drugged all day. A nightmare.

Laura Pflug

The day time staff was pleasant, group activities were helpful, and food was good, but night staff was rude and disrespectful. Night time hospital procedures has staff popping into your room every 15 minutes to check on patients. Sleep depravation does not help mental wellness! Seven smoke breaks a day inspired some people to start smoking that never had before. Interior mold/mildew in bathrooms, bedrooms and other common area; mold can cause mental illnesses too. They say not to make friends while you are in such places, but it is hard when you are dealing with raw emotions and you console one another. The truth is you have to be careful of who you meet because their problems can add to your own or some people may try to take advantage of you in some way because they know you're mentally vulerable. Mental treatment facilities such as this one seem to promote psychiatric medications, but side effects of drugs can lead to other mental or physical problems; read about prescriptions to know what to expect. A balance of nutrition, sleep, exercise and socialization are key factors in mental wellness, but finding the root causes behind a person's behavior is a doorway to health. Our country needs to work better eliminating the environmental causes of mental illness so we can help our diversified public to function with wellness (mind, body, and spirit).

Where to even begin with this review. Summit oaks was literal hell. It’s a psychological based hospital and the psychiatrist attempt to make people worse then when they came in. At one point I was on 10 different meds hallucinating. I went in for help after a suicide attempt and yet again when I was crying out for help due to vomiting I was given an injection and held down to my bed unable to move losing consciousness from one man who was laying on top of me. The first time I was there I was put in a choke hold with getting an injection. That time I called 911 then was strapped to a bed for over an hour. This place waits until crisis to get people medical attention. I fainted at least 6 times while there and ended up wheel chair bound. My last fall was so bad from dizziness caused by meds as well as having bad reactions to the food served it was a miracle I didn’t need back surgery. After one fall a nurse told me to stand up on my own or she would have to give me an injection. Clearly psych nurses don’t have proper medical training leaving them clueless to handle crisis medical situations. One mha would never knock on my room door so I told him one day to knock Incase I’m getting dressed. His response was “I’ll take the door off the f-ing hindges if I want to”. I reported it and nothing was said to him. Daily this same guy would tell me with a threatening tone that I don’t know who I am messing with. Another worker yelled at me when we were going outside and he refused to allow an elderly patient to use the elevator after she had a bad fall. He said everyone must use the stairs. When I spoke up that she fell and needs the elevator he screamed at me and if I don’t shut the f up I’ll never go outside again he will make sure of that. What type of hiring process do these employees go through?!?! I’m an advocate for mental wellness and the things I saw in this facility are unacceptable. Humane treatment isn’t there thing. From verbal abuse by staff, lack of involvement of the advocate who is on the ward daily, mind games by psychiatrist, this is all considered psychological damage which is illegal in psych wards. The whole stay for me was 2 months and I had an awful social worker who ignored me completely then another social worker told patients to yell at me to shut me up when I was simply an advocate in a wheel chair. Men wanted to fight me and workers did nothing. This place is hell on earth and it needs to be shut down. The ceo was of no help, nursing students were on the ward not having a care in the world about the suffering. People could have died while there. Awful simply an awful run psych ward and I was grateful to have survived. Do better summit oaks and to the advocate be more involved. Looking into getting a mental health lawyer that’s how badly I want to change that. facility. I will say their outpatient program is really great they should be utilizing that type or treatment and care on the unit. Receiving mental health services should not be handled with awful treatment in psych wards. I will speak out until psych wards do better. End the stigma, patients have right. Let me add they broke hippa violation by recording a visit on phones during my visit with my sister which is a hippo violation they also had workers recorded me when I was on 1-1 for suicidal thoughts all is s violation of Hippa. Do better summit oaks patients deserve to get well not plumit to worse when we all come in for help. Awful awful awful hospital!!!

Recently we were admitted to the inpatient Unit 1 for a week. All staffs, either we met in person, or we talked on the phone, were very friendly and helpful. Dr. Galvez is compassionate and is willing to spend time talking with the family. In addition, the facility is new and clean.

I came to this facility expecting to be treated for bipolar episodes and then released after 7 DAYS, at least that's what I was told by the incredibly rude staff. On the seventh day, I felt a lot better with my medication changes, and I was about ready to leave the unbearably filthy hospital and return home, except that I was held for an extra WEEK because I didn't like the barely edible food we were provided and therefore ACCUSED, or based TOLD that I had an eating disorder. I know firsthand what ED looks like ans that was definitely not the case, and I am very displeased with being labeled with an extra ailment, basically forced to eat everything and have my door locked after every meal. Also, when I was having a panic attack the nurse working would not let me lay down in the bed, she made me sit in a hallway until I begged to be let in the room. On my 13th day, when I was finally supposed to be released, the nurse wouldn't give me all of my belongings until I practically had to pull them out of her hand and I left 4 hours later than I was supposed to because no one even called my parents to confirm my discharge. While I was there, people were severely ill from whatever fungus and bacteria were growing on the walls and even when a girl fainted they wouldn't unlock the doors. I was not allowed to say goodbye to the friends I made, after being practically thrown out in the cold. I now have a bad virus now and I blame Summit Oaks entirely. Thanks for nothing, I guess.

extremely traumatizing experience. absolutely awful mental ward. I was there for 22 days in 2014, and i still cant even think about the place without shaking. there were some staff that were caring and kind, but the rest of the staff and nurses were cruel and unkind. i was in the adolescent ward and i was roomed with another girl who screamed 24/7 and would rip off my blankets and blow in my face, and the staff would do nothing about it. my social worker didn't help me, she just pushed me even farther over the edge. the groups didn't help either. the only reason i was able to leave was because another girl there helped me. the residents with behavioral issues acted out all the time and none of the staff ever did anything. the sad thing is i don't know who was worse; the other residents or the staff. I would never recommend Summit Oaks to anyone ever under any circumstances.

Absolutely terrible. I stayed in the children’s ward on 6/30/17 and got out on 7/7/17. It seems very nice from the outside, but it’s a disgusting place on the inside. The staff were terrible. They were very rude to other patients and I. I honestly have to say that there was only one good staff member there. The other children there were.... uhhh well it depends on who they were. Some were good and I became friends with them. Then there were others who tried to fight me multiple times and who threatened me and other patients. Since I’m female, I obviously have female roommate. Well it ended up that roommate wanted to finger me. She kept trying to pressure me into it. I’m not into females, I’m 100% straight. But anyway, the rooms were disgusting. There was writing all over the walls, broken ceilings, blood on the walls, blood on the beds, semen on the ground in certain areas, dents in the doors, paint chipping off the walls, and so much more. It was just a dump. It really hasn’t helped me or anyone else that I know feel any better. I would highly suggest doing more research and listening to all of these reviews, and just go to a different hospital if possible. We were never allowed outside. Staff didn’t do anything about any of the other patients there either. The patients would scream, curse, break things, and so much more that staff did absolutely nothing about. You could tell they hated us and their jobs. They wouldn’t let me into my room when I was having an anxiety attack. I begged my parents to take me home the second day I was there, they claimed I wasn’t able to go home. They have honestly made me feel so much worse.

My 19 yr old daughter overdosed on Thursday February 16 . She was AT summit oaks morning program. She was able to purchase drugs from another patient. She went home and few hrs later by the grace of God a friend and the paramedics brought her back. She is currently still in hospital watching/stabilizing her heart. I called Summit Oak on Saturday to inform of the overdose and the purchase of drugs under their nose. The elder gentleman told me to call back on Monday. He quoted, "there is no one to talk too. " Insurance and I is paying thousands is this is the responce I should recieve? No health or care facilities should ever reply in this nature! This is a life and death situation, any patient should be able to speak to a care counselor at anytime day or night. My daughter fought back from the brink of death. No, I'll be calling my lawyer and my health insurance to cancel payment. Shamful!

Beware of this place. Even though its non-profit the organization it is all about money. They don't offer any payment plans, threaten you with collections if you don't pay up front. Some of the staff needs a attitude check or something. My wife had been in the hospital for a month. When it was time for discharge they ran the bill up to 3k. They said we had to pay up front without offering any payment plans and threaten to send the account to collection. We paid them up front and what happens my insurance paid everything and I get refunded. Now for those who is in a similar situation, and I know there are others, don't give them anything. I swear if I had paid in full with my credit card I would be sitting down right now paying off the interest for it and know that they made a stupid mistake on their end probably and not have the bill or insurance information correctly. I wouldn't even give this place a 1 star because of the way they mistreated me/family and the way they handle things.

p p

I wish I could give negative stars to this terrible place, their terrible staff most importantly the most generous owner who responds to all of our complaints! If I could really tell you how I feel...

Laura

Worst psychiatric hospital ever! They strip you naked for a drug search. Talk about being uncomfortable when your admitted for mental health. The staff had no idea what they were doing. I was admitted into the wrong ward. They never contacted any of my doctors to find out what my history was. I felt so uncomfortable and unsafe during my stay. Luckily I was able to sign a 48hr and get the hell out! Never ever go there! I don't recommend it at all! That place is a dump!

Danielle Hang

Its been 5 years since Ive been to this place but the horrifying experience here has still never left me. I was in the adolescence unit and the majority of the nurses there were all extremely rude, mean and even condescending and abusive. Other things also happened which Im not comfortable enough to say but this place traumatized me and caused me to not trust doctors, nurses or anyone in the mental health field because of the intense fear I have of going back to this place, or being treated inhumanely. I’m slowly rehealing and moving on from the trauma I endured here along with my other illnesses but this place, in my honest opinion, should be shut down as the conditions and treatment by staff is atrocious.

Joe Streko

I used to work there, most pathetic and lazy stuff I have ever worked for, knew there was going to be a problem when the food superviser, there was a previous empoylee at a different chain and, had more complaints on her then I could count, knew it in my gut but gave it a chance, the head chef couldn't be more of a crybaby/sissy, complain about everything yet would burn oatmeal, never said a word, feel sorry for some of the actual hard working staff, and it was like a soap opera, such an uncomfortable work environment, two very lazy pathetic previous employees end up having there own little set up, will never work, and the board of health will see how they operate there scam, if they have not already. It's two lazy pathetic scum that give hard working people a bad reputation, luckily people like them are dropping like flies!!! Two lazy slobs

Wouldn't take my wife in when she was in crisis, and had ahead been through the ER. Which did nothing. What dies it say about a psychiatric hospital that refuses to even see a patient in the throws of a mixed manic episode?

Hector I Muriel Nieves

Today 5/3/2017 First day in T.O.P and I had a bad experience. You suppose to leave with less anxiety, angry, etc. This place did not help me at all. I was there for another reason, fears and angers issues, from 9am to 12pm. This unprofessional people instead to give me the tools to get better, I left even worse with no hope, nervous and really disappointed. I'm not coming back to this facility ever again. So I recommend before you go to this place make sure get the right information. And don't thrust anyone.

Jenny Lynn

Under no circumstance should anyone even consider being admitted into this hospital. My son was a patient there and I would never recommend this place to anyone. I witnessed the staff scream at the patients (which were children and teenagers) over minor issues. The staff was unprofessional, uncaring, and rude. I filed a complaint against a staff member, and after requesting that staff member have no contact with my son, this gentleman brought my son into his room and interrogated him about what he said to me that made me file a complaint. When this incident was immediately brought to the nurse supervisor's attention, she allowed the staff member to confront me, witnessed him speak to me in a rude and unprofessional manner, and then rudely walked away herself. Please, under no circumstance allow your child anywhere near here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First I have to say that 95% of the nursing staff were awesome. The Doctor I had was useless. The social workers just as bad! They were all jammed into a tiny little office and I know that Hipaa violations were broken. I heard them talking about another patient and what I heard I probably shouldn't have. Now they are charging me for seeing a Dr that I never saw!!! I met my deductible with the Hospital but now the Doctor's office is billing me separate saying my deductible was not met. Trust me when I tell you if you need mental help go else where!!!

nicole matonis

This was the worst mental hospital ever!!! The staff was very rude and not understanding that we are suffering severely as it is let alone be mean and rude to people. I would never reccomend this group. The groups that they had were pointless and Had nothing to do about our issues it was just about pointless stuff. There is no security what so ever on duty at anytime so anything could happen at moment with no one to help you. I give this hospital a 0 rating! I feel sorry for anyone being put in this hospital. Get More understanding doctors and staff members. Horrible horrible place !!

I am a type 1 diabetic. Before I was put on psychiatric medication with high blood sugars my mood swings from happy to depressed to self harm thoughts pretty quickly. The staff here refused to treat me correctly they put me on a sliding scale which meant that I was treated like a type two. They would not let me test my blood sugar when I knew I was going high. They refused to give me insulin before meals until an hour after to treat what my high was. Even then I still remained high for almost the entire duration. They would not let me use my own supplies. What they did to me was almost criminal negligence and if I had thought about it then I probably would have sued them. Too late now. The place was disgusting, the staff were horrible. I gave my concerns of always being thirsty and having to get up to pee multiple times a night. My mood did not improve. They did not put me on medication. The only good thing was the psychiatrist had the good sense to see I wouldn’t improve under those conditions and let me leave. Do not go here as a diabetic. Don’t go here period. They mistreated a lady who constantly fought people but her husband came in and explained that if she doesn’t get her psoriasis cream that she becomes very agitated. They wouldn’t only give it to her maybe in the morning. She had Alzheimer’s but they wouldn’t treat her ok. I was forced to eat foods with heavy carbs and their food was worse than hospital food. All in all this place should be shut down. I can’t imagine it’s gotten any better.

Recently got discharged from this hospital I was there 6/19/19-7/1/19 as a voluntary patient because I was suicidal- NEXT TIME I WILL JUST KILL MYSELF rather than ever got back there. It’s so understaffed it’s ridiculous with a ratio of 1 nurse to 15 patients ranging for schizophrenia to anxiety. Most of the staff was agreeable, I understand their job is tough and I was nice to them and they were nice to me, but I saw nurses curse out patients and get short tempered with us. They were like prison guards if you got on their bad side they were bad to you. I felt soooooo uncomfortable there as another patient because OBSESSED with me and made uncomfortable sexual remarks to me often, he was also very violent and I felt afraid to speak to the stafff because it would just make everything worse. I am TERRIFIED when he gets out he will stalk me because he was so pushy in there. He also made physically aggressive gestures towards me and “pretended” to slap me across the face and when I told the staff they did nothing. As a survivor of domestic abuse this was EXTREMELY traumatic for me. I really hope they try to separate patients based on their status because this man scared me so much. The MHAs came into our rooms every night every 15 minutes which I know is their jobs but they often has male MHAs in the women’s rooms at night which is traumatic for women who suffered abuse. They were loud and never closed the door or opened the doors loudly and woke us up. The groups were so ineffective and bogus, just printed hand out and vague discussions from nurses that really had no type of identification with patients. This place could be better if they increased the number of staff members to make it easier for them. The night staff was RUDE as well Some of the staff was nice I got along good with some of them, and doctor Miller was very helpful and understanding of my diagnosis and willing to work with me and understanding of my trauma. But I’d never come back here again. I’m now struggling with fear of being in large loud groups and having people close to me because of the patients there. I really hope they can change something here

I can't comment on inpatient (which seems to have mixed reviews) BUT I can comment on OUTPATIENT. I attended the Intensive Outpatient Program for depression and anxiety for over 10 weeks and it helped tremendously. The staff were educated and supportive, the program was organized and comfortable, I enjoyed the groups, and they worked with my schedule. Overall, my depression and anxiety greatly improved with this program.

If only I can give a negative amount of stars. I had a family member, who is only a teen, stay there. They lost weight from most of the crappy food given. Not to mention that the staff treated them with no kindness and respect. When my family and I went to visit her, only the parents were allowed to visit. And in one visit, this family member couldn't see them for some mistake of miscommunication, limiting their one hour visit time. Finally, bad food and rude staff to the patients. Now, there are more things I can write, but that would reveal the family member's identity. But they got discharged and still think about how they were treated and what they had to do. Although, the therapy provided did help them a bit and there was a bit of good food provided. But, the experience they got from this hosptial was horrible. If you want your family member to be treated with respec make sure you can visit them, and so on, go to another hospital. This is not the one to go to especially for children and teens.

They put me through hell with false diagnosis snuck medication into drink gang stalking behavior manipulated an already messed up situation you cannot trust them I was forced to go the only place that may be worse is Trinitas in Elizabeth if u wanna keep the mental health u have left stay away they terrorized me

Baked Ziti

I was in the adolescent unit for 6 days 4 years ago. I was verbally abused by the staff and the therapist during my stay. I was also physically abused during my stay, which shocked me. Out of all the staff there was only ONE that I felt deserved there degree, and I would hope that they would find a better job. After I told my mother she had to fight the to get me out as they said I wasn’t ready to leave, what that means is that they saw me as money not a patient. I filled out a complaint and they said there is nothing they can do. Unless you want to feel worse when you leave do not admit yourself here. They should be shut down. Go to Four Winds hospital they actually help you.

sarah walsh

the adolescent hospital was awful. It was a constant battle between patients and staff because they did not accept our needs or listen when we told them something. The staff was rude and not tolerant of the patients and simply did the bare minimum to get them in and out. I have a vegan diet and all I was able to eat was salad FOR EVERY MEAL. I would not recommend this hospital to anyone under the age of 18

Karen Harrison

If I could give -50 stars I would. Summit Oaks treats patients like they are animals and deserve to be caged up. I was supposed to see a male psychiatrist there, but they forced me to see Dr Hassan, a female doctor who spoke unintelligibly. The therapy groups were nonexistent. Quite frankly, Summit Oaks needs to be shut down. They do not treat patients with kindness, compassion, and empathy at all. The facility is extremely far from therapeutic. Prison is far better than Summit Oaks. I would much rather go to prison than go near Summit Oaks ever again. Shut Summit Oaks down and tear the building down ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, send all the employees there to North Korean prison camps.

Prior to starting, I was nervous about completing an internship here due to the reviews I read online. However, my experience at Summit Oaks was exceptional. On the unit I was assigned, the staff was helpful, informative, and down to earth. I looked forward to coming in every day. My least favorite part was having to leave. Many thanks to the employees and clients of Summit Oaks!

I was a patient there in 2009. This was the most horrific thing I have ever experienced. I was sent here from a Job Corps not too far for depression and a drug addiction. The staff was ok but too happy to use those tranquilizer needles. I had some words with another patient there and only went to my room to get some space and calm myself down, next thing I know I'm being held down by 2 men and a woman who proceeded to pull my pants down and stick me with a tranqualizer, that wasn't necessary at all. There was a black lady that worked at night I don't know if she was supervisor or what but the other staff did not like her not did any of the patient's. I watched this woman on many occasions for the 2 weeks I was there start with one of the patient's constantly to trigger him so she could take pleasure in giving him that tranquilizer. This woman litteraly had a smile on her face every time she would walk to his room with that needle in her hand. This place violates so many human rights and the abuse you have to endure until someone tells you your free to go is just ludacris. I hope things have improved if not this place needs to be shut down.

Kathleen Bright

DO NOT allow your child to be sent to this facility!! We requested a facility with better services and were willing to travel for those services rather than send our grandson to a local facility that we had heard horror stories about. This facility was 2.5 hours away and what a mistake! They made no medication changes for my grandson until day 7 AFTER being told that a medication he was on had an adverse effect on him. Then refused to allow him to be transferred to another facility and contacted DYFS instead and filed a false claim saying that we were trying to remove our grandson from their facility and take him home against their advice. We are at day 9 day and he will be removed today! We intend to file complaints with as many agencies as possible and may consider a lawsuit...

This is not the first IOP program I have been to in NJ and it is by far the best. The staff are incredible and really care about the patients. Made a 100 percent difference in my recovery and I will always be grateful for that. I hear some people complain about the food. Seriously?? - that is the worst problem you have? Time to get real! Thanks Summit Oaks. I love you and I will miss you all. Thanks for saving my life. Stephen Forest

I discharged from this hospital a few days ago after being treated for Bipolar Depression. I literally, and I mean L-I-T-E-R-A-L-L-Y do not have the time or energy or the memory sharpness (thanks lithium) to recall every horrid thing that happened during my overstay at this facility (I should not have been there longer than 6 or 7 days, I discharged after 10). My doctor and social worker were great, but clearly had way too much on their plates. I overheard employees complaining about being sent home early and having their hours cut. They were SO understaffed it was horrendous. When I was filling out my discharge paperwork and came across a question on a survey about what they could improve upon. Number one thing would be Bedside Manner, but that would imply that there was any Bedside Manner at all. THERE ISN'T ANY. AT ALL. I watched one of the guys on my unit get yelled at by the staff as he cried and moaned in seering pain (he was recovering from a recent surgery) and they barely did anything when he eventually HAD A SEIZURE. Paramedics were not called. I'm sure this anecdote is sufficient enough to complete this review.

Ava Echternacht

This is literally the worst mental hospital ever. I was in the Children/Adolescent ward for 9 days, one of which was my birthday. The staff screamed at us, the kids cursed, including a seven year old girl who told people to shut the f**k up, and there were penises drawn on my bedroom walls, as well as curse words. One little girl would throw trash cans at 6 a.m., and the staff would do nothing about it. And the food was horrible. Please never send your kids there. If no other hospitals have a bed open, send them to outpatient or CHOP. I mean, seriously, I have nightmares about this place. Oh, and they put me on Abilify for depression, and in the commercial for Abilify it states that "Abilify should not be used to treat depression in children under 18". I am under 18. Brilliant. Just Brilliant.

Jeffrey Brandt

I was there in july 2018 for detox and Rehab... The Staff Nurses and Doctors did a great job... The food was great and more then enough... The Social Workers especially Maryann went above abd beyond.. I had a little bump in the road with my dicharge plans but they worked to solve the issue quickly.... Id recommend this place to anyone...

It was really great there Ive definitely had a learning experience there the staff was really helpful an friendly if I had a chance to go back there I would it’s so beautiful there

Had a patient hospitalized here recently. They neglected to understand his trauma history. I, his physician, was told by the inpatient psychiatrist and social worker that I could visit at any time. I drove from NY to visit at 9am, and was greeted by a troll of a woman who made no effort to accomodate me stating "iss too early for visitors". My patient had mentioned feeling disrespected during his stay, and I've had the dubious pleasure of the same during my only brief interaction.

My name is Chana. I was in Summit Oaks Hospital in August of 2019. I stayed two weeks. A very jolly ambulance team accompanied me to Summit Oaks. They made me laugh and let me eat snacks. When I got to Summit Oaks I was wheeled in on a stretcher and a lady took my photograph. I read and signed some papers and was walked upstairs to Unit 1. Three patients introduced themselves to me and I immediately had three new friends. A very sweet Mental Health worker checked my body for scars and drugs. I was assigned a room. My impression was that people were happy to be there and the place wasn't too noisy at all. There was plenty of food and snacks. There was a water machine with cold and room temperature waters. Some of the patients spent the day watching TV in an open day room which was opposite a nurse's station. Other patients played cards, board games and colored pictures in the cafeteria. We were given yellow non-skid socks to walk around comfortably. On my first evening there I took sleep meds to help me adjust to the Summit Oaks' schedule. After that night I did not need sleep meds anymore. Each bedroom has two beds built in and wooden cabinet frames around the beds. On the patients' side of the nurse's station there are magazines, newspapers, and three patient phones. The Units are situated around a courtyard which is covered in cigarette butts. We go out there one to six times a day. Depends if you'd like to smoke or get outside air. The bedrooms are kept well-ventilated. You might get a little chilly or warm depending on if the sun is shining through the windows. There are woven blankets. Many patients enjoy taking a blanket and pillow to the couch area, curl up and watch TV. Womens rooms are separate from Mens Rooms. One side of the Unit 1 back hallway was for females the other side was for males. The age of the patients ranged from 20's to 60's. Everyone is there for their own separate rest, recreation and reprieve. I found that the patients all tried to be mindful and helpful to each other. I really felt that I was part of a team. You will get along with some of your medical staff. With others you will experience friction. I spent my birthday in the hospital. A staff member ordered me a cake which never arrived but I did get to celebrate my birthday there. Parents and my sister visited about 6 times over the two weeks. One patient was a pianist and when the large conference room was open she'd play the piano. Another patient played the guitar. I felt physically comfortable at Summit Oaks. There is plenty of privacy and just enough friendship.

THIS HOSPITAL HAD A HARD WORKING STAFF WHILE I WAS THERE AND BENT OVER BACKWARDS TO TRY TO ACCOMMODATE THE DEMANDS OF A GROUP OF PATIENTS WHO OFTEN CHALLENGED THEM ON EVERY LEVEL. THE CARING ATTITUDE AND OVERALL PATIENCE AND PROFFESIONALISM THE TEAM HAD I WILL NEVER FORGET.MOST OF THE NEGATIVE VIEWS EXPRESSED ON GOOGLE ARE PROBABLY PATIENTS WHO HAD A HARD TIME FOLLOWING THE RULES OF THE HOSPITAL STAFF.

Andrey Levichev

This place is not as horrible as it might seem from other reviews. Staff is respectful and treats patients well. The hospital is clean. Patient rooms are pretty basic but livable. During the day there're activities patients can participate in, so they won't be completely bored. My wife was treated at the hospital for two weeks. She had a panic/anxiety attack and a major depression after some unpleasant life events. She was drinking heavily and not taking care of herself. The stay at the hospital helped her. The experience itself of being in a mental institution had the biggest impact. The attention of the doctors was quite superficial. They did ask questions about her condition but they ended up prescribing medications that I myself suggested at a family session because I knew they had helped my wife before. Overall, Summit Oaks Hospital is OK. Not the worst place but they certainly could’ve shown more attention to each patient’s case and his/her treatment. It may be caused by limited funding they receive. There’s constant pressure from the health insurance company to kick the patient out of the hospital as soon as possible.

I did not find that the staff was rude. I found the total opposite. The clinicians truly care about each of the patients there. I was in Dual IOP. I thoroughly enjoyed the groups. They became way more helpful than I had ever imagined. Please keep in mind when reading these reviews...it's all a matter of perception. You get out of it what you put in. A++++

I have been a patient at Summit Oaks six times since 2012. The first 5 times was in the adolescent unit, and I must admit, each and every time I felt like I was in a living hell. In September, I was admitted to the adult dual diagnosis unit (still confuses me since I was not on any drugs). The reason this gets four stars is because in retrospect, it was a very helpful experience for me. The staff was overall great (except for one time in 2013-14 ish, but I'm pretty sure they were all fired.), and it did keep me safer than I would've been at home. My only BIG complaint was the adult unit. There was only one group a day and it was pretty pointless, and there was also a mouse in the day room area. Longest stay was in 2015 for 16 days. Shortest was this most recent for only 7.

MMCJ Productions

I think SOME of the staff could have been nicer. But if you ever go there as for Mrs.Pam in the adolecent unit. She is the best. Very clean. Therepy's are great. I made tons of friends there. I reccommend this place for anyone who needs inpatient rehab.

If your way worked, you wouldn't be reading this. If you or a loved one has a substance abuse problem, it will take some significant willingness, effort and sacrifice on your part to address the issue. You will be home sick, you will not be able to do whatever you want, you will not have any privacy, you may not like the food or accommodations. In general, you will be uncomfortable until you acclimate to the new surroundings and routine. If you want to get better, suck it up and deal with it. This facility isn't the entire cure for your disease, but it is a necessary first step in the long hard road to recovery. I have traveled that road and my journey began at Summit Oaks. Good luck to you.

Intimidating staff. The pills made me feel sick. They were ready to put you to sleep over small things like being rude or refusing to move your seat. This place isn’t for the faint of heart. I was forced to get completely naked for no reason as soon as I got there the staff member smiled as I removed my clothing. Why they had such evil intentions I’ll never understand but know that your child won’t receive the proper help. I was also assaulted by one of the staff members in the lunch room for speaking “out of tone”. Not a safe place for your child or teen.

Horrible. Had a seizure there. Received no treatment. Received no treatment in general. Horrible food. Asked for a plastic knife and they claimed they had no more. It was more as of they were too lazy to walk to another floor. Almost the entire staff is rude and cold toward the patients. Many times simply ignoring them when they request anything.

This hospital should be shut down. They mentally abuse their patients and ensure there progress remains stagnant. If the patient has insurance they make sure to keep them in the hospital for as long as possible so they can suck up every penny they can get. The nurses ignores the patients concerns until the patient panics. Once the patient panics they force them down with drugs so they can give you the bill for it later.

One of the worst places to go. Only one nice person there. ALSO ALL THE BATHROOMS ARE COVERED IN SEMEN. But in all seriousness this is one of the worst places to get treatment. I hated the food and did not eat, the staff did nothing. After threatening to kill myself the staff put me under ¨special surveillance¨, which I didn't notice a difference in my treatment or surveillance. I got beat up, the staff did jack. I would recommend shutting this place down but since they copy paste the same corporate BS for every complaint this probably wont go toward anywhere important.

Hannah Haarklou

I am so happy after my loved one who is there told me the true state of the hospital. She said she loved her doctors and social workers. She also said the food was great! I was so worried after reading all of the bad reviews. I just spoke with social worker pala. She is excellent. Also, I have heard great things about the psychiatrist Dr. Domingo. I am hoping to relieve family members who see the bad reviews. The staff is linking my mom to many positive resources. Thank you again Summit Oaks!

I was a patient there about six years ago , The place scared me to death, no Privacy, was afraid to go to sleep at night, during day a man patient hollering &cursing up and down hallway, a girl patient overturned a couch in sitting area, I couldn't eat lost so much weight, one doctor per 20 patients or more, was a horrible place, food they served to Patients was terrible, I was so skinny when I go discharged no better then when I came in, even worse, my mindset was horrible, what a terrible was of time!

what im me i dont lie

I was there in 2014. They help me in only one way, which is make my stay horrible so I wouldnt come back. I was there for 7 days, and everyday I was yelled at, and twice the staff became physical with me because I was upset and didnt listen to them. If I could I would give them a -5 starr review.

parents, no matter what anyone tells you: do NOT allow your child to be sent here!! at age 14 i was sent to the child/adolescent psych unit at summit oaks and i have never encountered a worse facility in my life. from the first moment i walked in i could tell that the place was dirty and not very well maintained, but i tried not to let that scare me....after being there just a few hours, however, i realized the problems with this hospital went much deeper than that. the "counselors" could not have been any less helpful, they clearly hated their jobs and every single one of us kids. they get paid to help us recover, but all they did was terrify us into not being honest with them. they also sedate patients left and right, patients who were hysterical but who didn't necessarily need to be drugged immediately. there is a zero-tolerance policy at summit oaks when it comes to expressing anger/anxiety--how ironic is that? kids are there to get help, not get drugged as soon as they get upset. the staff were rude, sarcastic, and openly mean to anyone who asked for help. also, as i mentioned the place was filthy, and the day i left i had become so sick that i puked. oh and a few kids i knew there were signed out by their parents and hospitalized elsewhere because they feared for their child's safety at summit. i tell every single parent i know who has a child struggling with depression the same thing: avoid summit at all costs. this place will make your kid worse.

Family member was held against their will and lied to, all these Google reviews show a pattern and we are angry we did not research beforehand. The corruption and civil rights violations many reviews have expressed over the years seem to be an unfortunate pattern. Summit Oaks Hospital did not provide information that their parent company is United Health Services, Inc. That means they are not a non-profit organization, and their parent company depends on your money and Medicaid/Medicare as they make a profit. Any one that follows or invests in the stock market knows they are in shambles as they have been under federal investigation. Their most recent stocks seem manipulated and no one here will tell you to speak to corporate. Had my family known that we were sending our loved one to a facility "entity" with a corrupt parent company, which is under federal investigation, we would refuse to a transfer to this subsidiary facility. Look at the stocks, the investigations among other companies and formal complaints, the settlements with other departments of justice and health. We are furious to say the least that we thought this facility could help. It just did more damage. Even their "AA" book is fake and literally says it is not approved or endorsed by Alcoholic Anonymous, just idiots with idiotic opinions. Do not send your loved ones to this prison!

RUDEST staff ever. Most DISGUSTING place ever. If I could give this 0 stars I would. The social worker i was given here, didn’t do her job and never once called my therapist. The effect of her action, caused me to stay at this terrible place one more night. It seems like they just wanted my money. In fact this hospital was so disgusting, they had to have a health inspector come! Also, when I left they told me that they didn’t think I needed to be there! They kept me there for over a week, and I didn’t even need to be there! Also for some of the therapy groups, they had one of the patients there in charge of the entire group! Also, never once was there an individual therapy session. Also that whole yoga and pet therapy is a bunch of bs. One day out of the whole time I was there, the patients had an optional yoga therapy session. Also every 15 minutes, a “nurse” would come in with a flashlight to see if you were alive. They’d shine the light in your face, and when they left they would leave the door open, and they would talk so loud with the other staff members, that I couldn’t even think. By the way, during the “schooling” part of the day, all we did was make slime in a crowded room. We were also all told that if we cursed, talked back, refused “therapy”, or didn’t do what we were told, we would have to spend 24 HOURS IN REFLECTION. THATS WHEN THEY LOCK YOU IN YOUR ROOM FOR 24 HOURS. BECAUSE THATS THE WAY TO CALM SOMEONE DOWN!!!! I don’t even think it was your own room! Every day when I walked down the hall I saw a sign on a door that said reflection room. There is no possible way for this room to even have windows. Oh and can we talk about the windows in the patients rooms real quick? They had no curtains. Now I understand, some people could try to kill themselves. But if that’s the case, why did the bathrooms have curtains? And why did the shower rooms have curtains? There is no possible way for anyone to see you in these rooms. But our bedrooms, had buildings in front of each window. Also you’re checked up on every 15 minutes. By the way, visiting hours? The only people that could visit you were your guardians! And only five minutes on the phone, twice a day. Also the mattress was plastic. The one pillow was plastic. There was unsettling writing on the walls and bed. The chairs were the most uncomfortable and disgusting things ever. Covered in dirt, crumbs, inappropriate writing, and drawings all over it. The floors were so dirty, that when I got out of bed to use the bathroom, my feet were BLACK. The food was also terrible. The one blanket you got, was soooo thin and extremelllllyyyyy uncomfortable. You would probably think bringing your own is an easy solution. Wrong. You needed a doctors permission in order to have a stuffed animal or your own blanket/pillow. One patient had a diamond ring, and was told she could kill her self with it. They said she couldn’t have it and she told the staff she would give it to her mom. The staff told her she couldn’t, and when she got discharged, the ring suddenly went “missing”. The same thing happened with someone’s expensive north face. My whole experience here has truly traumatized me. The littlest thing triggers a memory from here and causes extreme anxiety for me. This happens pretty much everyday. I just wish I never went here. I’m just saying, if you want to be relaxed, get help, and have a therapeutic experience, Summit Oaks hospital is not the place to go. Summit oaks isn’t even a hospital, it’s prison that steals your money.

Due to the fact that I had no other option, I gave it one star, however, this pathetic, fraudulent excuse for a hospital is actually a poor disservice to individuals and should be shut down immediately. Unless you want to end up with acute stress, exasperated/intensified anxiety and complete loss of faith in humanity due to their attempts to utilize false NJ statues to threaten and deny your legal rights to leave. You are basically kidnapped, and if you like a place that still depends on windows xp, a tv that was probably found on the curb of a nice Summit home, circa 10 years ago, then by all means come here. You will lose your civil rights, receive inhumane treatment, incompetent, outdated "coping strategies" such as common knowledge information, and useless non therapeutic groups run by interns (chosen from the bottom of the barrel). Most, but not all staff here demonstrate the absolute corruption within substance/detox facilities and many of the seemingly competent and few ethical/empathetic staff are starting out believing they have their foot in the door, or are simply naive. Do not fall for the 48 hour nonsense. Ask to be transferred to a competent and respected facility, as it is your right, or obtain an attorney or competent psychiatrist to avoid their scam to keep you against your will. The corruption is horrific and it is obvious that it is understaffed, and most of the nurses could not obtain jobs elsewhere, the ethical nurses get fired ps. If you want your personal information lost, Inexplicable HIPPA violations including exposure of your social security number( of course ) ask for unit 3 detox. You will be denied your rights to speak to loved ones, your request to adhere to other important financial responsibilities, and be lied to about your release date, as well as be forced to sign a bill of rights that promises visitation. However in unit 3 detox you are later informed there is no visitation. There is no consistency, and their lack of electronic health records allow them to alter your diagnoses, treatment plan, and write in false therapeutic interventions which include worksheets that seem as old as 30 plus years old, which are printed from their pathetic printers that are out of ink/low toner. The staff blames each other and if you research their past state audit deficiencies, they're doing it again. Do not go here, you are better off in individual therapy or demanding that a top grade hospital keep you for detox. The admissions department here are incompetent individuals that could not pass their LCSW exams, there are no NPs or APNs so you're left at the mercy of a nurse that could not obtain employment elsewhere. This place is worse than Trinitas Hospital. I can go on but it's so disgusting it's unbelievable. Do not come here. My my legal and medical advocates were strongly against it and I lived it.

Thomas McBride

Self-Admitted approximately 5 years ago for PTSD. Looks like they have changed logos and maybe management since. They allowed cigarette smoking in the quad. Seem to overdose patients with medication and staff seem more like security guards than medical professionals. One individual refused to pay them and he got discharged right away.

I wouldn't go here. Most of these hospitals are garbage. All Staff except one African American Nurse in Unit are rude and unhelpful. Security was more helpful. Dr. Is a rude as well

intimadating staff for some reason. The pills I was given made me feel sick. But nothing was over the top. They were more about who was gonna hook up afterward than who needed the help. Not for the faint of heart there’s gotta be better places then this. I felt like some staff were ready to put me to sleep over nothing. But the last place I went to injected me with this blue liquid that they wouldn’t tell me about all that place said was relax. I still don’t know what that blue liquid was to this day but I do know that I felt dumber afterwards. The moral of the story is be careful where you place your child they may end up more messed up than before they went there. I think I was being intimidated because of my size.

It has taken me a year and a half to write this review. It still hurts that we had to send our 7 year old to any psychiatric hospital. On the outside the place looks welcoming, inside where the patients stay is so-so. All in all, I don't feel like the hospital helped my daughter. I am not sure if it's because she was so young or what but it took her about 4 days before she met with a psychiatrist who put her on a med to try and stabilize her. The doc didn't even start with the lowest dose because their pharmacy didn't have it. When I told my pharmacist this, he was shocked. We gave my daughter a bag of toiletries, it was never given to her. When we went to see her, some days my daughter did not want to see us. My husband felt like the staff should have had my daughter sit quietly in her room or the common area if she wasn't going to participate in visitations but instead she was allowed to run wild while we sat there like two idiots. They eventually discharged her because they said there was not much they could do - she was so young and was not benefiting from group therapy because everyone was so much older than her. So overall, this place did not help much.

If you want to go temporarily insane, then go here. I was committed and tricked by the doctor and the hospital I was at before to sign a thing called a 48 hour notice. That notice is the catch all scheme to get patients to either leave after 48 hours or get committed. DONT sign that notice. Most people leave by NOT signing the committment. For example, a person who doesnt sign it will leave in about 3-5 days. A person who signs will likely stay 7-10 days, with a possibility of two weeks, It is HELL. Nothing to do, ONE tv for 20+ patients. Group for like 2 hours total the whole day. Rest of time guess what you day, NOTHING. Except walk around your room for hours.

Unfortunately, the nature of this facility being a place that helps drug addicts, your going to get opinions galore based no where in reality. I am in recovery, and there are many things that I have realized about the nature of this disease, one being that it is a disease of perception. With that being said, drug addicts can be the whiney, overly opinionated, ungrateful, narcissistic, grandiose, entitled, as you can see in the reviews here. I'd be willing to bet that most of these reviews have zero merit. Probably exaggerated, or just based on the way a drug addict in detox see's the world around them. Most likely a spoiled brat that thinks everything sucks, hence why he or she is in rehab to begin with.

Summit Oaks saved my life.

Beware their billing department! My daughter stayed here and we were sent a bill in April, which was paid in May. At the end of July we received letters demanding payment and threatening collections, legal action and credit reporting. We called to resolve this and they said they had never received the May payment. In speaking with the primary office they said they have the payment and have no idea why we have these July dated letters, and we need to call the other department because "we have no idea". Wow - way to go. So one department doesn't talk to the other to resolve THEIR issue, and in the meantime I am stuck with a final demand . Great customer service - NOT!

Excellent place...

I hope people looking for help realize that, as a facility treating recovering addicts and patients with mental illness, there will be patients completely unwilling and even angry to have to go through treatment, hence the skewed reviews. My experience is with the psychiatric program (can't speak for the rehab), both the IOP and PHP programs. I'm just beginning my treatment. The staff is very respectful and friendly and really goes out of their way to help you. The psychiatrist really worked with me and took my concerns into consideration when it came to me medications, something no other psych had ever done for me. The thing to remember about any sort of treatment like this is that you get back what you put in to it. It's a lot of work, and it's never easy, but I feel like Summit Oaks gives you enough tools and support to really go places. Plus the food is good so...
