I started seeing Dr Vander Kooi the summer of 2016. Although I never felt particularly connected to him, he filled my scripts and I was out the door. Of course, he would only write my script for one month at a time so I had to go back and see him every month to get my script refilled (which is not cheap, even with insurance my copay was usually $50-$100).
I never had an issue with Dr VDK or his staff until my last visit. I was in the middle of a crisis, brought on by uncontrollable pain that was wreaking havoc on my mental health and disallowing me from sleeping. Over the course of the week, I left a few messages expressing my need to see dr VDK urgently as I was feeling rather unsafe and very unstable. At one point at 10 am I received a text alert from them asking if I could come for a 10;30 appointment. Relieved, I immediately agreed and got ready to go... until the office staff called me and rudely reprimanded me, saying that had I answered her call at 8 am I could have had that appointment but it had since been taken. Looking through my call logs I found no evidence of a missed call from them or message. So, I expressed that I would take any further canceled appointment.
I was given an appointment on a Friday, which I had to miss work to attend. They charged me $150 for the appointment, which is a LOT more than usual but because I was desperate I paid it anyway. Now, I will admit I was in a bad head space and rather distressed/upset. I went in and began to tell dr VDK the issues, and the extreme effect lack of sleep was having on my mental health and work life. He seemed distant and tired, and I tried to explain to him that I was having a hard time with this demeanor and that his office staff had treated me rather rudely. He responded by telling me that according to them, I had been calling "40-50 times a day." Again, the call logs on my cell don't lie; I counted a total of 12 outgoing calls to his practice that week. Also, I work in an office where I do not get cell service. I politely asked dr VDK to see the call logs, as this news was quite a surprise to me and I did not mean to be of trouble to his staff. He responded by saying "do you want to see the call logs, or do you want me to treat you?"
I am aghast and shocked that a doctor and their staff would treat a patient, especially one in crisis, in such a manner. He ended up then yelling at me for taking up more than my allotted time with him (30 minutes) and how I was taking away from others. He hurriedly wrote me a prescription for an SSRI I took long ago with no success, refused to listen to any further concerns about this, and pushed me out the door. Visibly upset and humiliated, I asked the receptionist if I could see the call logs as I was surprised and confused. She rudely told me simply, no.
In the end this whole incident has made me realize I deserve a doctor, especially a psychiatrist at that, who I trust and fell comfortable with. Even though he provided me with medication, I never truly felt comfortable or trusting toward Dr Vander Kooi. He has a cold demeanor and does not particularly seem very... well... friendly.
I don't want others to have experiences similar to mine with this doctor, so I will be filing a formal complaint with the Board of Healing Arts, State of Missouri.
