I would like to take the time to say thank you to Mindful Matter's staff and especially Joannie Evans for helping myself and my family through a very difficult time in my life. She is extremely knowledgeable and it is evident she enjoys what she does. I have never had an issue here and i hate to see the negative reviews left. She is very professional and takes your mental health very seriously. I am appalled at the negative reviews left here, these people must have this clinic confused with someone else, but if not, i sincerely hope they get the mental health care they need, for it is obvious they are not seeing things clearly. Thanks again to Joannie and the staff at Mindful Matters. I am looking forward to my next appointment as we always seem to make great progress.

AVOID THIS PLACE!!!! Mindful Matters is the worst health provider office I have ever visited. The office is very inefficient. They don’t answer their phone or return calls. I needed to reschedule an appointment. I called first thing in morning the day before my afternoon appointment. No one called me back. Mindful Matters policy is missed appointment will be charge to your credit card. To see anyone, they have to have a credit card on file. Since no one called and I didn’t want to be charged, I went to my appointment. I was told it was cancelled. No appointment had been rescheduled just cancelled. The receptionist wasn’t apologetic. She said she was too busy and doesn’t have time to call. After I asked how was I supposed to know my appointment was cancelled, she stated that was their policy. Joannie Evans, one of the nurse practitioners, came out to belittle me in front of patients in the waiting room and the receptionist. Joannie told me it was up to the patient to reschedule. I don’t know how I supposed to do that since you can’t get anyone on the phone. She also stated if I didn’t like their policies I could find another office. So I took Joannie’s advice and found another provider. If Joanie can’t handle an upset patient in the waiting room, how can she counsel anyone!!

I don't even want to give these people one star. My daughter was very sick, very sick. She ended up in the hospital. It was not something I could control. I called them immediately so that they could possibly fit someone else in. I had to RESCHEDULE, not cancel, RESCHEDULE, which I did. In fact, I have an appointment the first week of March, which reminds me I need to cancel that. Since I couldn't make it to my appointment that day they charged me $150, knowing my daughter was sick and it wasn't something I could control. When I called they were so understanding, she told me "no problem, I'll set you up another appointment" and she did. The $150 fee was never mentioned. I'm still waiting for a fax from them explaining about the $150 fee. And maybe I just don't remember reading it. I understand about time being valuable. I run a business myself, but I also know that being a descent human being isn't something you put a price tag on either. There have been times where clients had emergencies and cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute, but I understood. They would have made a lot more money off of me had they not billed me $150 for something I could not control. My advice to anyone who might be in my situation with them is simple. Don't cancel! If you're throwing up, or your child is very ill, still go to your appointment. Bring your sick child with you! Contagious? No problem! I emailed them Saturday when I noticed the charge, it is now Thursday and it took me calling them to get a response. I was told that they don't communicate via email with clients, which is fine, and even understandable. So when I asked her why she didn't call me after she obviously read my email, she got defensive and told me she wasn't going to argue with me.... So, that's how these people do business. Beware! These people are not out for your best interest, they're out for nothing but your money.

If I could give less than one star, I would. I am a professional in the medical field, and this place is very unprofessional. They did not return from lunch until 25 minutes after the posted time, with no apology or explanation. When my husband was finally brought back (30 minutes after his 1:45 appointment time) they requested his copay. That wouldn't be an issue, except he was told at his previous appointment that the follow up appointment wouldn't cost him. They then came back and claimed he was outside the 30 day window (which he had never been informed there was one). Not once did a provider come to explain or clarify. The poor office lady was forced to take care of it. I do not and will not ever recommend them to my patients.

Show for appointment on time and wasn’t seen! The reason? Too long to process the credit card payment that was declined. Did I offer other forms of payment ? Yes check. Do they accept checks ? Yes but refused me service regardless! Because of the time it took the lady to process my cards on her defective machines or so she said! Will I be billed for this visit? Unknown but have a feeling they will and I will not see fairness on this if they do. Patient advocacy should be involved.

I see N.p. Lauren Sullivan she is the absolute best!! I love coming to this office the atmosphere is sooo comfortable. They work with you and you can tell that they really do care!!

Reading these negative reviews, it is clear to me that individuals love to excuse their own behavior by doing the only thing they can ~ making someone else look bad! There are always valid reasons for someone to be refused as a client at ANY business; however, I would LOVE to tell you about my own experience with Mindful Matters. I have been a client for 2+ years and have ALWAYS been treated with respect. I see Joannie once each month and she is one of the kindest people I know! She, Tracy, Aimee, and everyone who works in the office are simply AMAZING!! Clinically, Joannie has been a sounding board for me and has helped me through many personal issues with her expertise. She is extremely intelligent, caring, conscientious, and professional. She always has the best advice for me and I leave there after every appointment feeling great. A little background info about myself ~ I have been an RN for 25 years and received my MSN 18 years ago. I specialized in Mental Health because I hated the stigma surrounding it. I have been a Professor of Nursing at the college level for the last 15 years, so I have taught Mental Health, evaluated several facilities (inpatient and outpatient), and instructed my students in many Mental Health settings; therefore, I am more than qualified to evaluate and rate Mindful Matters. If you are looking for a professional Mental Health practice, a caring staff, confidential treatment from Practitioners that truly care about their clients, look no further than Mindful Matters in Gulfport. You will NOT find a better place on the Coast!!

They only talked to me twice. The third time I went in was a horror show for me. She insisted on calling an ambulance to take me out of there and check me into a hospital. There were no other choices she gave me, just said I had to do that. I complied and spent eight hours locked in a secured emergency room with nobody seeing me at all. All of this because she was not treating me for my mental conditions, rather treating me for drug addiction I have never had. The worst part came when I said "no more" to going inpatient for medical detox, a thing it turns out I never needed in the first place. Mindful Matters discharged me, after claiming that I would die unless I went to the hospital. They discharged me and cancelled all medications. It took two months to get in to see another doctor. Two months of dealing with my chronic mental illness all by myself. They do not listen, they do not know how to treat Anxiety or Depression and God help you if you were ever, during your long battle with mental illness, prescribed Xanax because they will forever treat you like a drug addict if you have. I got off the Xanax a long time ago, on my own, with no problems. Second worst experience of my life dealing with psychiatrists. Do yourselves a favor, try Singing River instead. Not a paid shill, just a current patient of theirs with a great experience so far.

Thank you to Joannie Evans and Mindful Matters’ staff for consistently practicing ethically, despite it not always being the most “popular” decision to make. In a world of instant gratification, too many providers just give in to patient demands under the pressure, time constraints, and “popular” expectation, despite it not being the best educated option for the patient. I know I’m in good hands when I have a provider not scared to make the hard, right choices in MY best interests, despite what my last google search or buzzfeed quiz recommended!

Wonderful staff and environment. Joannie Evans, PMHNP, is exceptional. She listened to my needs and concerns, while incorporating her professional opinions, in order to improve my treatment plan. With that being said, she does not generalize me into a group and understands my needs may vary than those of others whom suffer from the same mental illness. I've noticed comments demeaning her professionalism due to her age, but I, for one, see no correlation with her age and professionalism. In my opinion, her professionalism exceeds expectations and surpasses basic standard level of care. I have nothing but good things to say about this clinic, and I could go on. I highly recommend anyone suffering from a mental illness to seek help from a health care provider at this clinic. I cannot speak on the behalf of the other providers at this clinic due to the lack of personal experience; however, I am sure they all practice by the high standards of care, of which my provider does. It has truly been a blessing to actually look forward to my appointments and know I will receive the appropriate treatment aimed toward improving my overall well-being.

I never leave reviews, much less negative ones. However, it is warranted in this situation. I so wish that I had listened to the reviews found online before making an appointment, but I tend to believe that people over-exaggerate and dramatize their reviews. If anything, my review is subdued compared to what it could be. Keep that in mind as you read. I will not rehash the entire experience from the beginning, but I will say that my lasting impression of Joannie Evans is that she is unprofessional and "snippy." My son was dismissed from her practice today because we had discontinued the medication she prescribed. However, he had a very negative side effect clearly attributed to that medication, I called and left a message for a nurse BEFORE he stopped taking the medication, the nurse called me back, and she informed me that he should just stop taking the medication. So we did. We were supposed to discuss other options, if any, at his next appointment. Apparently either a note was not made in my son's chart (RED FLAG) OR Ms. Evans did not take 5 minutes prior to the appointment to review the chart (RED FLAG) because she seemingly assumed that we were being insubordinate in quitting the medication. Therefore, we were dismissed. HOWEVER, she did not even take the one minute required to tell me this. She simply sent my son back the waiting room and told the person in the office that no follow-up was needed. Not even a quick, " He can't take any medicine I can offer, so I can't help you." Not even a "Why did you stop giving him the medication?" to which I could have replied "He had ____ side effect, I called and spoke with a nurse here, and was told to discontinue the medicine." Lack of professionalism and rudeness averted. But that is not at all what happened. I am not looking for sappy Southern sweetness, just basic human courtesy and professional treatment. Anyhow, I left but soon returned because I needed to understand why we were dismissed. Without giving you every detail, the sweet person in the office (the mother of Ms. Evans) tried to smooth things over and asked me to have a seat so she could see what happened. Then the nurse came out (the sister of Ms. Evans) and tried to smooth things over by saying that if my son cannot tolerate that mild medicine, he won't be able to tolerate others. No explanation as to why Ms. Evans did not take a moment to tell me that, but I know why- she was angry because she thought we had challenged her professional opinion and stopped a medication without her advice. Instead of confirming that, she assumed and did not even take a moment to speak with me like an adult (and decent human being)- a conversation that would have taken very little of her precious time and would have ended the relationship on a positive note, without this review. I do not recommend anyone seeking treatment for themselves or their children from Joannie Evans. And if you do, don't download the forms from their website. They are incorrect and you will have to reschedule your appointment and come back with the right forms. It just "takes too long to fix the forms on the website." I am a website administrator- it takes about 60 seconds start to finish to change out a file.

For the lady who said "it is clear to me that individuals love to excuse their own behavior by doing the only thing they can ~ making someone else look bad!" Everyone is different when it comes to mental health this includes medication and the type of treatment one receives. I am extremely glad for this lady that these people are helping her!! My experience was not so successful. In-fact when I told my psychiatrist (this is a MD) about how they treated me when I went he was not impressed, and a bit disappointed. The number of mental health workers on the coast is small and getting smaller. So I would strongly recommend if you think something is wrong about your treatment or medication provided by this organization (or any other) that you would at least consider all of the remarks you read. I am not interested in an argument with anyone. But, individuals who seeks out mental health help should consider as many of their options that are left to people living on the coast. Especially since it looks like Mississippi is having a crises in this area of health care. P.S. I too am well educated, and taught on a university level. I am guessing, but your qualifications might have influenced the kind of care you received.

I have referred several clients to Joannie and they love her. Great outcomes.

After Joannie Evans wrote my brother's prescriptions correctly for a number of months, she suddenly and unaccountably wrote a huge overdose prescription. Instead of 100 mg 3X day, she wrote 300 mg 3X day. Luckily, my brother caught the error at the pharmacy, and the pharmacist called Evans and got her to correct the massive error. She did not apologize to my brother. She also blamed the error on the previous doctor who had treated Roger, but he did not make this mistake--she did. We recommend avoiding this nurse practitioner. Online, she is listed as a "doctor," but that is misleading. She is a nurse, not an M.D., and she lacks the depth of education that an M.D. has. She is also very young and has only a few years experience as a therapist. If you feel that you need medication to manage your emotional or mental symptoms, you'd be better off finding a psychiatrist with many years' experience and good reviews. A further warning: this young lady does not welcome opposing points of view. It's her way or the highway.

The worst health services I have ever encountered!!! EXTREMELY arrogant and totally unconcerned about their clients, it appears it’s all about the $ Upon a referral from a relative( work colleague) of hers , I scheduled an appointment to see Amber Wilson to consult with her about the management of my medications. I went to two visits and paid $368 only to have my blood pressure taken( by machine) At these 2 visits, I was surprised and concerned by the BP results considering I have NEVER had high BP and had recently been to my family physician several times within a few days of these visits and my BP had been normal. •The first visit ( $254) Went over initial intake paperwork and discussed my BP. Told to come back a week later. •The 2nd visit I was told I needed to go to the ER and get an EKG because, again, my BP was dangerously high. I never even made it back to to Ambers office. I only had my BP checked in the nurses office ( $114) for just that !I left her office and went to my local walk in clinic. My BP was normal !!!!! •On the 3rd visit a few days later-I was asked to pay ANOTHER $114 I refused , explaining to the front office person I wasn’t going to pay $114 AGAIN just to have my BP taken and that I had never even made it to Amber Wilson’s office on the previous visit. Amber then came up to explain to me “I needed to pay for her time”. I explained I had no objection to paying for her time, however on the previous visit, I hadn’t received her time or ANY services other than having my BP taken ( by machine) and a 5 min instruction from her in the nurses office to go to the ER for “dangerously high” BP. Which I now believe & know to be inaccurate, Considering the 4 other places I had been within a 4 week timeframe but especially since right after leaving her office the previous visit & my BP was “ very good” at another clinic. She refused to listen to anything I had to say and told me she wasn’t going to see me again. Also, she stated that I had texted her relative and “involved them” so she was not going to see me and walked out and I left. * The fact is I did not text the relative that had referred her to me! I did mention to them that I had been calling the office several times a day and that they NEVER answer the phone! (a recurring complaint in the reviews) Take Heed !!! A total waste of time and money! Really wish I had read the reviews before dishing out close to $400 for nothing !

Unprofessional, very rude and very dishonest with billing. Tracey, who answered the front desk hung up on me. My daughter had been trying to get in touch with them to cancel an appointment (left messages) I was just trying to reschedule for her. They have a cancellation policy that is a scam to benefit them and dont return calls so they can bill your credit card! BEWARE...I wish I could give ZERO stars.
