If you think the Google reviews are harsh you should read the ones on Indeed to see how staff feel about the place. Honestly, you don't want to work here. The managerial style is completely the opposite of what you would hope to find in a therapeutic environment.

The staff was very helpful and nice my stay was very nice. I wish the best for all of the staff and patients.

This place is terrible. My 19 son was there and he received ZERO counseling. He was released after the insurance ran out. There was no assigned therapist or appointment for my son (my understanding is that this is a state law! We were promised a pre-release meeting with the social worker and this never happened. When they let his out, they didn't even give him a pair of slippers! He walked out with only a pair of socks on his feet!!!!!!! I plan to speak to an attorney. Not for the money, but to make sure these "professionals" do something for the LARGE amount of money they charge! They should be charged with abuse!!!!!

Went here for treatment April 2015...admitted for a week. While the doctor and social worker that worked with me were excellent, much of the time on the unit in the milieu was just spent sitting around. They ran groups, but they seemed to be few and far between, unless you were a dual diagnosis client (alcohol and drug addiction plus mental health issue concurrently). So the dual people got twice as many groups and it almost felt as if treatment revolved around them in regards to group therapy. We were given adequate outdoor time which was nice especially in the spring as it was starting to get warmer, so that also helped to break up the monotony. The good news is that after around 20+ years of treatment for myself, I found a doctor there that seemed to get my medications right. I have been doing quite well since my discharge in mid-April and am thankful as I said for the doctors and clinicians and social workers, but the milieu for non-duals needs work in my opinion.

When i was there in 2015 the hospital was very unaccommodating to me as a transgender individual. They tried to make me wear a male wrist band. Tried to make me do a strip search with a male. And even refused to give me a room mate. I don't know if they have changed but the only other inpatient unit that did anything remotely close is Bournwood. But all they did was refuse to give me a room mate. All other inpatient hospitalization experience I have is acceptable and inclusive.

Other than the medications, the therapy sessions are a joke. Spiritual bingo, emotional jenga, etc etc. The place is quite dead and eventless on the weekends. Many of the staff are nice, the food is passable (some of it terrible), the rooming is actually not bad. Clean, decently comfortable beds, and AC/heat. However, during the winter season, almost the entire ward was freezing cold. Coupled with the cold sweats I was already experiencing, I had to pace the floor wearing 3 layers of clothes and some blankets shrouded around me. Unacceptable for a therapeutic environment, and caused me major discomfort on top of my anxiety and depression. The heater in my room did very little to cut through that chill. Simply put, maybe look for an alternative.

The staff is aweful dont care about you and yell at you when you repeat yourself by accident. Allow violence to occur and think they can control you dont do anything about med changes except make you worse social workers are extremely rude and ignorant

The company is a tight knit group of people who really care for the place they work and their clients as well as eachother . I worked there for some time and got a lot of support from my peers. The social workers also offer a lot of time and effort to making peoples lives just a little bit easier. Working there felt like working with a family and I miss it. It's not very often that you work somewhere where you consider your co-workers good friends.

Dirty, bugs, bad food, bad attendants, bad doctors. You will not get better here but will be charged and they will keep you as long as they can. It was a horrible experience! I was worse of leaving then I was coming in. Please avoid if your unwell. Terra vista was helpful which is where I went afterwards

Nicole Gens

When I was here I was so scared and anxious about everything. I didn't realize how much I liked this place and actually miss it. Compared to alot of other places, this is a great place to be when your not feeling so well. They where pretty much on top of everything.

I recommend never setting foot in there. A family member of mine was admitted on a Friday and was not evaluated until Tuesday. The symptoms were due to being prescribed a medication that was contraindicated. They continued to give the medication that was causing the problems. They caused permanent detrimental changes. Please protect your love ones by staying away from this facility.

I was physically assaulted by a patient and all they did was move me to another ward. There were no reprocussions to the other guy even though police were involved. Don't go here

I've been a patient here twice and I was always treated well, and I always left feeling much better than when I first arrived.

I went here figuring that the hosptial would have some sort of treatment for bipolar 1. As I was going threw a manic episode the nurses did nothing to relieve my symptoms. One nurse would always tell me to just breath and that did not help. I was in a mixed state and needed the right medication. I was appalled by the way they treated me when I needed help. It’s a dirty filthy facility and I hope they get shut down. DONT GO HERE EVER!!!! They did not give me the proper treatment for my episode.

Worst experience ever. Waste of my time. Yes i took the meds what doctor told me. Never got medical records and they have me signed it. There is more to it. I was restrained for invalid reason. Plus domestic violence issue not resolved. Violation to medical laws. Its a concern about domestic violence in this facility back in 2012. Never resolved. They are violating medical law. When the patient comes to facility staff should be responsible for patient safety. I got hit on the nose by other patient. My nose was bleeding. That patient ran away. I talk to staff they said they cant do anything and put me on restrain order

If i could give -stars i would. Terrible, lazy, useless, rude, snappy, condesending nurses. They lost one of my belongings and treated it like a joke. The counselers who run the groups were respectful, sensitive, helpful, and cared about the patients and their wellbeing. The social worker was ok, a little disorganized and wasnt able to provide me any help with staying in touch with work and my short term disability program, and since they confiscate your cell phone and you are limited to 10 min phone calls on a phine shared by 21 patients, that made it rather difficult to take care of what i needed to, and i was informed at the hospital that sent me there and by the staff at Whittier on admittance that my social worker would be helping me with those calls. She didnt. The psychiatric did appear like he cared and wanted to be helpful, but he didnt seem to have any knowledge about the meds I was on or the ones he was prescribing, he meets with you everyday and everyday he would ask how my alcohol withdrawl was going and talk to me about not drinking and i would have to interupt him and tell him that i am an not an alcoholic and that he must be mixing me up with someone else. ABSOLUTE WORST NURSING STAFF I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. I have been in hospitals i have had family in hospitals amd i have worked as a nurse's aid for dementia patients and psych patients. I have never seen nurses like this. LPN's and RN's. They have no skills in redirecting patients or validating their feelings. Any issue that i or any other patient brought up, the nurse would immediatly blame the patient and make an excuse. Example: at 8pm you need to be in line for meds if you are on "orange team" because 2 separate LPNs give out meds for "orange team" and "green team" 3 other patients and i were waiting in line at med window. Another patient was having some sort of episode and causing a commotion so Nurse Useless told us all to leave the hallway and she would get us when she was ready. I went to my room. 45 minutes later came to check because it had been awhile. They had moved onto "green team" i asked Nurse Incompetant if i could have my meds i am orange team. She snapped at me and said she was done with orange team and that i already got my meds. I said nope u didnt get me. I said i was here at 8 told someone would get me. She checked her roster and said o i didnt see your name. Clearly frazzled and embarresed that she had marked her night meds complete and missed a patient she glared at me and said it is YOUR responsibility to be out here at 8! Again i explained i was out here at 8 and i was told to wait in my room for someone to get me. Nurse Incompetant went to the med window and told Nurse Useless that this patients name was in the wrong spot and she wasnt out here at 8 so i need you to stop green team so i can give her meds but its not my fault because the patient didnt come at 8. I again said i was here at 8 and told to leave. Nurse Useless told Nurse Incompetent that i was right. Nurse Useles looked at me, did not apologize and said we were probably told to leave the hallway because we were too loud. I said nope i was quiet, another patient was having some sort of panick attack so we all had to go to our room. No apology. Nurse gave me my meds with a snippy tone trying to find something anything to make it my fault and not hers. This was constant. Anything and everything i was blamed for and fed excuses. Anytime i asked for something i was told i already had it. Staff didnt seem to communicate well. They let my mom and boyfriend bring me stuffed animal and candy then staff confiscated it the next day. WORST THING WAS THEY TOOK THE BELT OFF MY $120 COAT AND THEY COULDN'T FIND IT WHEN I WAS LEAVING! THEY ACTED LIKE IT DIDNT MATTER AND I HAD NO RIGHT TO BE MAD! THEY TOLD ME TO CALL BACK AND THEY WOULD MAIL IT TO ME OR REIMBURSE. I HAVE BEEN CALLING FOR 3 DAYS GIVEN DIFFERENT ANSWER EVERYTIME! FROM "YOU DIDNT HAVE IT WHEN YOU CAME IN" TO "WE GAVE IT TO YOU" AND "WE DONT REIMBURSE" it wasnt lost/stolen. Staff lost it. Stay away from Whittier!!
