On Tuesday 3/1/16 at approx. 2:50pm I went to the clinic for a drug test and to meet with Dr. Berman as previously instructed. Upon entering the waiting area I observed the client that recently attempted to extort me for $13,000. She did not cause a problem today. I observed 4 other clients, well known to me through the halls of AA and the clinic. These subjects are actively selling, trading their meds and as addicts they are prescribed medications that are inappropriate, such as Klonopin and Aderrall. Everyone was trying to position themselves to see Dr. Berman or Joy 1st as opposed to waiting for hours, the usual wait.
Dr. Berman summoned me into the conference room where I met with her and the NP, Joy Camara. They proceeded to inform me that I was being discharged from the office due to non-compliance with their program. They also alleged I provided (2 weeks ago) a tainted drug specimen but admitted the test taken 2 days later was negative. Dr. Berman's body and head shook with anger/rage as she literally could not stay focused and kept spewing out different allegations, most being untrue and outright fabricated. She alleged that all of the staff, including herself, were threatened by my presence. She could not provide specifics except that I wrote "This is bullshit" on the last drug test form. I tried to explain that I had already called the office and apologized. I explained that if someone had simply listened to one of the numerous messages left me the entire situation could have been avoided. In over 6 years I have never witnessed Dr. Berman be this angry. In fact in the 20+ years that I have been a clinician I have never seen a mental health worker/doctor act so unethically or inappropriately. Dr. Berman explained that while she was on vacation this past week she gave instructions for the staff to have no contact with me. When I pointed out that she effectively interrupted my psychiatric treatment and left me alone to deal with certain issues she promptly stated that I HAD NO RIGHTS. The NP, Joy, seconded this and said they do not return phone calls no matter how dire the situation or even in a crisis. They both informed me that all of the staff gets anxious prior to my visits, including the NP and Dr. Berman. I then questioned their background/training as well as stating that the staff turnover has resulted in brand new staff manning the front desk and I have never been profane or disrespectful to anyone at the office. Dr. Berman shook with rage and insisted I have a terrible problem with anger. When informed that staff did not like the fact that I insisted there is indeed a patient bill of rights and consistently advocated for myself, Dr. Berman stated there was nothing else to talk about, no second chances, etc. (This despite me having direct knowledge of several other patients having been discharged and taken back several times, not coming in as scheduled, etc,)
On numerous occasions I have informed Dr. Berman that waiting several hours to be seen is absolutely unacceptable and she hated it when I told her I had the right to be seen within a reasonable length of time. She was constantly on the defensive and could not accept positive or constructive criticism. When informed that the housekeeping at the office was non-existent and I would be happy to help, she changed the subject. At one point I was summoned to the office 3 times per week for a period of time and I questioned whether this was necessary and suggested to Dr. Berman she was doing this for the money as someone from Medicare had called me to question why visits were so frequent and suggested they would not all be paid for.
On several occasions my confidentiality was violated by the NP. On one occasion she approached me in front of a full waiting room and stated that if I did not return to see Dr. Berman I would be discharged. Several other patients told me they heard the entire exchange. On another occasion the NP shared with me information about another patient that had recently died.
