Unless you absolutely need to seek help due to self harm I suggest seeking a local psychiatrist instead of going into the inpatient. I recently had a fun 8 night stay on the mood disorder young adult unit. There are staff who are extremely dedicated( the ones who went or are going to school) then there are staff they hire off the street with absolutely no history in working with behavioral health who roll their eyes at you when you ask for anything. In order for you do get water you have to ask so I hope you can see how this becomes an issue. Between the inattentive staff there are ones who like to act like uber-police and report you for the dumbest things just to over use their power. During my stay my room was located near an individual with low functioning autism and would have incidents when they became violent. To watch 8 grown men attempt to take down someone that small is just utterly pathetic. Then they tranquilize you and put you on this board that I can only describe as a torture device they strap you to and place you on your bed. Then sit an individual outside your room. I've seen a Psych order for a patients room to be locked during group hours because the Psych felt the patient wasn't taking her treatment seriously when in all reality she is going through an extreme medication change which can do this.The food is absolutely disgusting. My first night there I was handed a refrigerated chicken sandwhich thought it was cold just due to me not getting in until late. Well, the next morning the "Eggs" were colder than room temperature. So Trying to not get food poisoning I switched to a vegetarian diet but they still managed to almost poison me with some bad hummus. If it wasn't for the option of allowing me to add ensure to my menu my diet would have consisted of just juice a different fruit each meal. From what I understand sheppard pratt is suppose to be practically the pinnacle of mental health facilities in this country and if it is it is a sad fact that we as a nation are not taking proper care of our mental ill. I can only imagine if I had a disorder that landed me in the psychotic unit how I would have been treated.

I don't have anything negative to say i just hate when kids like my son are admitted having anger issues put in quiet room i find it very disturbing during episode they will just watch cameras while child in quiet room banging i went to visit my son he had bruises all over hes wrist from banging on glass trying to get out locked room the staff just watching all they do is drug these kids to get them to calm down

If you have a loved one in serious mental distress and you are told that Sheppard Pratt Enoch Health System is the best or only option for them punch that person in the face and put your weight behind it. I was abused in the young adult ward and no one did a thing to stop it. The staff that watched over us during the day were uneducated and untrained in how to deal with complicated situations, diagnoses and had no qualifications whatsoever to be running any sort of therapies anymore than I did. Most of them played on their iPhones all day. I found that my fellow inmates and I helped each other more than the staff. The doctors they have there are worse and even worse. They will make you take their "recommended" medicines and if you adamantly refuse as I did, you might be told that you're being difficult and would be staying longer just in case you "change your mind". I was lucky that my parents saw these gross negligent abuses and they got me out. An iron sign saying Pillen macht frei might not be over those electronically locked doors on the ward but they should be. Run fast from this place if you want to live.

Some of my friends have been sent to this place, when returning each one seemed way worse than before. And from what I hear, it sounds like a nightmare. Notice how all these comments from actual patients, friends, or relatives all have 1-3 stars and say mostly negative things. Than most of the comments with 5 stars, are either from adults that have only seen the website and think its an amazing place! Or people who work there saying, "I work here lol" and giving it 5 stars no question. From what I've heard Sheppard Pratt is basically like jail. So if there is something that is wrong.... like you have an eating disorder or your extremely suicidal. I most defiantly do not recommend going to Sheppards Pratt, and if your reading these comments right now trying to save someone from going to Sheppards Pratt...... tell them or there adult to read the comments. The website may look amazing, and the building may look like a set for a movie, but its probably the best example out there for false advertisement.

Rude staff, poor management, disrespectful to families & poor communication. Doctors refuse to talk to you about your family members & the care they are receiving. The staff also do not know how to talk & interact with families in a respectful way. There is never any director, manager or supervisor on site. Avoid if you can sending your loved one here.

Trust the other reviews you see as well , all of the low ratings speaks volume. I’m surprised this place is still up and running. However pretty soon THEY WILL BE SHUT DOWN. Awful

I visited an adolescent (the daughter of a friend) who was inpatient. The staff walked some teens into the visiting room. The staff sat in chairs and the teens where directed to sit on the floor (at their feet). The teens looked up at the staff and were directed not to move, to stay. As a former mental health counselor who worked with at risk youth, I found this to be very disturbing, if not backward.2 stars for the benefit of doubt; however, family member reviews below are disconcerting and alarming.

*Excuse any minor inaccuracies/hyperbole because when in this environment, you are dependent on your surroundings* This mental wellness center has all the potential to be amazing, and yet the devil is in just about every single detail. They seem to hire whoever is willing to "put up with" such an environment, and not really care whether the people they hire are qualified. The doctors only have time to talk to you for 15 minutes a day (with a few other random employees sitting in the room eavesdropping and doing paperwork. Are they judging the patients as we try to shoot our best shot at accurately representing ourselves as humans struggling with mental wellness? Possibly, possibly not... very uncomfortable and unprofessional way of treating patients), and that is really all of the personal time you get to work on what got you put there for. From about our third 15 min session, my psychologist had decided that I needed several medications and felt comfortable diagnosing me as bipolar 1 without much of any formal diagnosis other than studying me like I was a monkey in a cage. I was there because my abusive ex was driving me into a temporary psychosis and my parents were scared, but nope apparently I'm just crazy and need pills. What a joke. This is not a sanctuary of cleansing and recovery; this is a scam, it feels a few shades away from a coo coo's nest sort of environment. They really make you worry about when you'll ever leave. They treat you like you have no damn clue what you are talking about. They treat your loved ones like they are trying to smuggle heroin through customs. My family and I have never been so devastated and disappointed in our decision to seek help, ever. I am still recovering from my visit here. One day I hope some compassionate person who GENUINELY and INTIMATELY grasps the experience of mental illness (without stigmas, either) steps up and runs the place as an administrator, because it is clear as day to every patient, some employees, and even the Baltimore community as a whole that this place is twisted and horrifying to navigate as a patient. This place is simply not as pleasant as they try to make it out to be, and that is a major issue because who knows how many people were relying on this place to turn their life around and when this place failed them with their lukewarm practices and dehumanizing treatment, they perhaps turned back to self harm. Do. Better. If someone is working on a patient floor and doesn't actually give a damn about the patients and acts like they are there for the paycheck, they need to be far removed from this establishment, much more than the concerned friends and families who are gaslighted by the staff at every turn. I met some beautiful souls staying on my floor, they were pretty much all radiant, kind people just struggling with really tough, traumatizing circumstances they had been through. But when these wounds and fears manifest, most of the time the staff treats them/us like circus clowns. Even when the patients were not misbehaving, we were often treated like we were trouble. Where is the certification to be helping these valuable souls in need? Why do you hire psychiatrists who can barely speak english or understand your situation to TAKE CHARGE OF OUR BODY AUTONOMY? It's a little silly. P.s it is so confusing to navigate the halls of several of your facilities. Some don't have a secretary's desk, simply a phone with a post-it note telling you to call x, y and z in order to ask britney to let you on floor 3, which is on the other end of a maze of hallways. The rehabilitation facility becomes a bigger traumatic experience than what landed the patient there in the first place, and my parents absolutely agreed. I am grateful I am stable enough to have not let this place drive me to suicide.

The people here lied and accused my friend of selling her meds to other patients without any sort of evidence whatsoever, and now it’s on her records and she can’t get the meds she needs from her psychiatrist because they all think she’s selling them. It’s pure defamation. Her mental health is deteriorating because of these awful people. So now she’s looking to sue or take it to court.

Towson day program kept taking things from my bag (eg. vitamin E oil i use for my earlobes that they threw out and an inhaler which i got back) Some of the staff are nice but there are some talk down on other patients who aren't in the room (makes me wonder what they say about me when I'm in another group) overall i don't necessarily recommend the day program at Towson. Inpatient at Ellicot City is pretty good except the food.

Sheppard Pratt is a facility for the mentally challenged. New requirements must be established that require nurses or staff to be more vigilant of the drugs prescribed by the doctors. Some staff may be overworked administering love and patience while others watch patients slowly die. Manditory requirements must be in place that require staff to be watchful of patients that need assistance. For example, if you see a patient feel cold, give them a blanket and in the very least, a bed sheet must be placed on the matress along with a pillow. These patients could have been you or me. Treat them as you would want to be treated. They are the victims of what has happened to all of us.

Called to be transferred to a friend's room after she called me, receptionist asked me to spell the name, but cut me off twice, then proceeded to tell me I was spelling it incorrectly (very rudely, especially since I couldn't finish saying the whole last name due to her cutting me off), then hung up on me in the middle of me trying to tell her the room number. Ruined my whole good mood with this terrible treatment, I can't imagine how they treat their patients. Thankfully my friend called me again and asked me for a visit... though I don't know if I'll go thinking about how mean they are.

I was incarcerated here for 13 months on West 2, age 15-16, before being shipped off to a boarding school. The horror show in which I was an unwilling participant included things like cold-wet-sheet-pack, locked-door-seclusion, and vast dosing of thorazine. The staff at all levels, with a few exceptions among the nurses, were inept at best. The school was a joke.

You know, when you have an addictions specialist as the only doctor and he sees addiction where there isn't any, not even one of the diagnostic criteria for addiction or substance abuse? Callously labeling someone an addict after less than 90 minutes is flagrantly unprofessional, especially without any supporting evidence.If the person is further is in mental anguish from the lifetime of manipulations from a sociopathic addict, it's cruel as well as unprofessional and biased. Come here only if you want your situation worsened.

Stay away from Sheppard Pratt unless you want your life interrupted by what appears to be a "Swat Team" of police officers at your door that was triggered by you simply not answering the phone. On 1-6-2018 ,My wife of 52 years and myself had a serious marital event that could have resulted in a separation ,,, I did something totally Irresponsible that resulted in my hospitalization for attempting suicide. Of course this isn't something that happens every week but once you get on Pratt's list they will dispense the "straight-jacket squad" if you don't answer your phone. The neighbor's no doubt feel the reason the police were there was criminal .

worst place ever I was there on March 16 to visit my mother was attacked buy a male attendant that was taking care of her I want to calm her down it was her first day . They punish the patient if they don't come out of their room no visitors , no food, nothing until you come out and sit at a table .I went to my mothers room her door was open I wanted her to see who was there, The attendant ran in front of me tried to slam the door with my mother screaming put his hand between us and pinched the under side of my arm. I pulled my sleeve up and my arm was already turning black and red and swelling He said he never touched me. I called the police but not much help there. I have pictures posted on the face book page also he said I scratched him I never touch him I also have the worst bitten and sore nails ever they are also posted on face book. So if your loved ones are in 2G take pictures once in a while and check for unusual bruises I am a 60 year old female being attacked by a younger big man What happens behind closed doors. Thank god we got our mother out right away

I recently admitted myself to their CROP program to address some lingering issues that I've had and to help with medication management. SP was there for me when no other place would help me; my PCP and therapist can only do so much and every other doctor or facility couldn't/ wouldn't help. They were attentive, responsive, respectful and just all around helpful. The CROP staff at SP is very nice and you can tell they are there for you and don't treat you like another patient to usher in and out ASAP. You don't leave until you feel ready and they let you know that if you need to come back, you can. I would recommend anyone in need of help to go. I should have just gone to them in the first place. Thank you CROP!

Reviews might be a little too harsh, but it is not the best place by far. If their is Drama you cannot get away from it, also too many staff/Doctors that barely speak Clear English. Also the Inpatient rooms were super cold. SOME of the staff is enthusiastic, some are not

I was admitted there when I was 13 the staff was very disrespectful. Not only to me but by mother also. I got there on a Thursday night that Saturday me, my mother had a discussion with the staff and they forced me to wait to use the restroom, that night I was made to clean toilets without wearing gloves. They tried to give me medication that I was not even prescribed. I lost almost 20lbs because of their negligence. That Sunday my mother signed me out against medical advice. Long story short, the staff should be fired and the place shut down

This is a place for wealthy people to stay when nothing else works, there is no more substance to it at all. Be warned it is not a real facility to help your loved one.

I was abused by the patients here and staff did nothing to intervene or protect me. My belongings were stolen from lockup by patients and staff covered it up. Not even patient advocate helped. Lastly, there was a large breach of confidential information of many of the patients, including myself where all medical information (medications, diagnosis, doctors, address, social security numbers and more) were given to the wrong patients upon discharge. All patient information are now being circulated around Baltimore. This is a massive violation if the HIPPA Act and Sheppard Pratt is desperately trying to cover it up. As with everything else, I've noticed they do not own up to their wrong doings - none of them (staff, supervisors and patient advocate). Many people in an authoritive roll threaten, mock and ridicule patients. This place should be shutdown as it does more harm than good. Shame.

It was a pretty decent experience for me. I was admitted immediately Though some patients may have to wait depending on availability. It helped me so much. Some of these reviews are heartbreaking of some become so disturbing, but truly I believe that they do these types of things for reasons. They simply do not have any bad intentions. I am much better than I was before and I really would recommend this to someone in great need.

I recently just got out of impatient at the Sheppard Pratt hospital. Before I was put in unit 1E ( Female Adolescents unit) I was placed in a holding unit (CAU or CEA I believe) which I liked very much. I was very confused during my first safety check in which I was required to strip all of my clothes and underwear. Which of course makes sense but I was not given something to cover myself with. After they checked my clothes and jacket I was allowed to put them back on. I spent one night in the holding unit and it was very hard to rest. The next afternoon in which I transferred, from what I saw only a few staff members were nice to the patients. Others would be rude for no reason. I was given one of the double rooms that they have in 1E (there are two double rooms) and I had staff members repeatedly tell me the rules about being in a double room. The last staff member that did seemed to basically yell at me about the double room rules. She wasn't considerate at all about what I was there for and she made me very upset and anxious. There were multiple occasions throughout my stay where during group time I'd start to cry and no staff/ nurse seemed to care. While I was there a girl got attacked, so much for being safe. The food was okay for me but there were patients that couldn't eat their food because it didn't accustom to their diet. Some of the staff even talked about how they only had the job because it was the closest they could find; and that they didn't want to be there. Most of the staff were inconsiderate about the MENTAL patients that clearly were at Sheppard Pratt for a reason. The doctor that I saw was okay, she didn't really help but I was put on medication. There were two groups. Basically the two groups didn't have time to interact with each other. And although we are there for ourselves we still want to know the type of people we're living with. We didn't have many opportunities to. Even when we could talk, I was very appalled at what we were not allowed to talk about. A group of patients (including me) were talking about our sexualities. Which was perfectly fine with all of the patients. So I made a joke, something with me saying I'm their "local lesbian" and a staff member told us we weren't allowed to talk about sexually. Of course we ask why. She says that it might "offend people." Even though everyone there (at the moment) was not heterosexual (straight). Visiting times were okay, it was only 90 minutes per day and we had the chance to phone someone 4 times a day, but the lists were long. Overall I did not like the experience at Sheppard Pratt but their day program seems to be a bit better.

Horrendous! Doctor told me to go in to the on site clinic they have for my 6 year old son who they believe has Autism and extreme behavior issues. He advised me that if I didn't line up outpatient care, to refill prescription drove up today for a lady with a penciled on set of eye brows to give me an attitude for absolutely no reason at all. Somebody else came up and talked to me I explained the situation and how imperative it was for him to have the recommended meds they started him on last month. It blows my mind that he can't be evaluated in clinic and simply have meds re-filled. Complete waste of time. Dr. Responses were always "ummm" "ummm" so no surprise he would misinform me of the clinic ordeal. Rooms were dirty on my son's overstay. Nobody seemed friendly at all.

Not everyone who works on this campus or in it's buildings is a "Sheppard Pratt staff member". They rent out their offices to people who they are not affiliated with. I had a bad experience with a psychologist named John Gartner. I went to him to discuss abuse I experienced as a child, and he told me, "all I see is that you've acted nasty". Apparently he just rents office space at Shepard Pratt. He is a horrendous and despicable human being.

They keep you for a week even if you don't need to be there. They basically force you on medication even if you tell them you don't need or want it. When the medication starts disrupting your sleep and making you nauseous they put you on more. They'll use your honesty against you and try to make you stay there longer. The food is complete crap, they give you menus to choose from but always change it into things you don't choose Their strict rule system is ludicrous, you can't share even if you don't want something and another patient does it's discouraged. You can't talk about certain topics, they basically make you go to sleep because they turn all the lights off. The "contact" counselors don't help because they hardly care about anything you're saying, they just report it back to your doctor in case you say anything bad so they'll be able to put you on more medication. This place is a huge waste of time and money.

I was referred there by my special school (the Harbour School in Annapolis) a year ago and it was HORRIBLE. I did not get admitted because there was not a bed available in the unit for kids with disabilities like me. The first doctor I saw was really nice and she checked if there was a bed available in the unit which she said that it was unavailable and if I was admitted, I would be placed on the regular children's unit. My mom did not decide if she had wanted to admit me as the decision was made by me. We then went to see a different woman who was extremely rude. She kept asking my mom if I have Autism or any related disorder which was really weird. She then told my mom that if I was admitted, my mom or any other family members would not be able to see me because the unit would be on lockdown. I made the decision not to be admitted because my own mother would not ever get to see me for the time that I could have been there. After the visit, WE WERE KICKED OUT of the office and told to call the number for an alternate day program which we were told does not take people under the age of 18. Terrible facilities and service. I now have a great psychiatrist (private practice) who provides what I need.

I was recently discharged from unit 1E (female adolescent unit) and I’m kinda eh about it. The food isn’t the best, it’s not filling or tasteful but you get to order what you’d like. You don’t sleep on mattresses, you sleep on mats. Some of the staff are rude for no reason and ignore what you ask them to do. The social workers can be rude and so can the doctors. Your bathrooms are locked at 9PM, you’re not allowed to talk to people in the hallway, the staff will get you in trouble for stupid things. You can’t even air hug. If you do something such as give out contact information, threaten someone, hurt someone, something like that, you’re put on IFT. When you’re on IFT you get up to 20 questions that you have to answer with two paragraphs and 5 sentences, you’re not allowed to come out of your room and you’re not allowed to talk to anyone until you’re done. It is fun though having card and board games, group, and movies. A majority of the patients there are super nice and welcoming, and they’re the ones who helped me get through my week there the most. Overall, it’s not a bad place to be in but I wouldn’t want to go back.

Long story short, I got b**** slapped by another patient and none of the staff tried to stop it when they had plenty of time to. And I still got in trouble. They don't let you outside, you don't even get to go to a cafateria, it's the same small space for however long you are there and than your room. If your thinking of taking your child here. Don't. Just go somewhere eles, it had to be better than here. Edit, the pictures of the rooms? That is not at all what they look like (or at least not in the adolescence Ward) its a plastic bed thats screwed to the groumd, as well as a wood desk also screwed to the ground. There is no coffie table, or couch, or ANYTHING even remotly similar to what you'll see in ANY of the pictures. Its 100% NOT a retreat and they shouldnt call it that. Ots a mental hospital amd it sure as hell feels lile a hospital.

Absolutely terrible and negligent! I’ve never been incarcerated but I can imagine it would be not too far from my experience here! The place was filthy (left with rashes)! The “providers” did nothing for me. I came in with nothing and they didn’t even have underwear or soap! The groups were a joke! They paid no attention to my dietary restrictions! I asked to speak with a chaplain multiple times and they came over 48 hours later! Admissions people lied on my paperwork! No discharge planning discussed! They never adhered the daily schedule! I spent half the time eating, watching TV, and talking to patients! You come here for help but instead spend your time counseling and being counseled by other patients because no one does their job. Please if you want your loved one to get help do not send them here. Yes, mental health care is a joke everywhere but this was by far the most negligent and unprofessional service I’ve ever seen. I left no different than when I walked in. This place should not be in business. And before the owner responds with their scripted response, save your breath. I already reported to the state and NOTHING was done. So spare me the “We are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. We encourage you to reach out to our patient advocates to discuss any concerns.” I asked for a patient advocate several times and all requests were ignored. Stay far far away from this place. They do not care about your wellbeing or life!

I was on the young adult unit and had some of the best treatment from my treatment team than any other time there. I'm glad I was finally able to get the help I needed and am continuing to get the help I still need in their day hospital program.
