This place was terrible. My brother was in it years ago. I won't go into what I saw because it was so disturbing, but lets just say they didn't know how to take care of a seriously traumatized and mentally ill person. And I think his mother was paying $1000/day and this was in the 1990's.

The facility is filthy, so much so that I ended up being sent to Sibley hospital because P.I.W. gave me cellulitis. It is a dehumanizing facility that needs to be shut down.

This place is by no means ideal, but the staff I encountered on the 5th floor, in the Adult Psychiatric unit were very kind, and my mother received good care there. My mother is in her late 70s and was taken there voluntarily from a rural area that has no facilities of this kind. It is true that PIW is not the cleanest, but I didn't notice any real hygiene issues that would have troubled me. The staff are working with a fairly difficult socioeconomic spectrum of patients. My mother was well-cared for, listened to, and treated well, she says. The psychiatrist who treated her was very good, and very communicative with me and my family. So, while I cannot comment on the drug rehabilitation and adolescent units, my experience with the adult unit on the 5th floor was basically good.

This place is more like a county jail than a place that's helps people in need. The complete lock down atmosphere is absolutely unlawful in detox in which they will not let you leave even though their own consent states that you can leave whenever you choose. NEVER send your loved ones here who need help, anywhere would be better than here. I can't believe this place is allowed to even operate. Unfortunately they prey on the less fortunate. Additionally, they will steal your stuff and not give it back to you when you finally have to break your way out just out of frustration. Absolutely the worst experience of my life. This place is an absolute joke with completely inept staff that lie to you just to collect money. Trust me, they do not have your best interest in mind. I repeat, do no not go to this place. A grievance will be filed with any option that I have along with a lawyer and police. This place needs to be shut down for good. Best of luck to anyone who tries their hand at this place. I could have cared for myself better than these rookie doctors and nurses ever could have. Message me if you would like to discuss this disgrace of a place.

Horrid, horrid time there as a kid. Some of the adjustments made to mental health care had not been implemented here yet and it was bad. Would not reccomend this hospital to anyone

J. California Cooper

Very scary and unethical place. Proceed with caution. No child should be here and no one that is unable to advocate for themselves.

A female staff member "nurse practitioner" tried to get in my pants (fondle my penis and offered to do an anal exam and made suggestive sexual comments) instead of just doing her job and providing a screening physical and the staff did absolutely diddly for the first 3 days I was there (a weekend) and then discharged me on the first opportunity and then charged Medicare thousands of dollars!!

0 Stars. If you want mental health or any other services do not go here nurses act like a bunch of terrorists they cuss and swear threaten you with sexual assault. Just one in my case yet the others ignored it. They'er threatening, talking like taking things to the outside. Get the entire unit against people. Racist sarant like heck. The other unit that I was in was better, with the difference like night and day. Nursing staff was kind good some like blah. Groops, some real bad some were good groups. From the first unit it was really bad, next one kind of pretty good. Nurse practitioner didn't make good on her promises at all. let alone it took a long time for them to confirm the better medication. Yet hardly implemented much they left some of my meds out especially ones for depression. They were really poor not really any help. Good with hurting. You really lost me really, really lost me. Google wanted me to get back on making reviews so you got it. Oh... and I wouldn't be surprised if they work for dope dealers. And perhaps they just work with the government to make my life unbearable. No good, just bye.

If I could give negative stars I would. This place is horrible, my son left 10x worse then he .came. He was so drugged he fell and required stitches. At 10 he signed his own discharge paperwork

The non medical staff are rude and very unhelpful - even misleading us about visiting hours and trying to block our visits. The nurses and doctors are barely OK... which Is really not good, considering the cost of PIW! The building does look clean and inviting, but the actual medical care is quite subpar. They seem to specialize in constantly changing meds and dosages, and there is NO real care provided on weekends. Strongly recommend that you find an alternative to sending your loved one here.

Awful place. My son was assaulted my another member and they moved him to an adult area because they said were more comfortable moving my son vice the girl who inappropriately touched him in his private area. Oh and he tried calling 911 to report it and they took the phone away from him to prevent him from reporting it and then didnt tell us until we confronted them about it. Wonder if they would act the same if he were a girl?

I saw a kid get his arm broken by a STAFF MEMBER. Enough said.

I was here in 2017, It was a awful, violent, dirty, decaying place. I was on the adolescent side, and I witnessed and experienced abuse daily. Injections in kids for no reason, provoking them just to be able to toss them around, not feeding, locking in rooms, taunting and bullying them, I had a male staff member throw me to the ground, slamming my face into the ground so hard I was pouring blood, because I came out of my room at night "without permission" to tell them i had been sick. The walls were filed with holes and bugs, staff was exhausted and angry, kids were given meds without parent notification, I was taken off my meds cold turkey when IT COULD HAVE KILLED ME, and no one even told my mother. Fights between kids 24/7, constant codes being called. Male staff would go into my room when me or my (4!) roommates were showering or changing, with no reasoning, and just stare at our bodies. Overcrowded, understaffed, doctors come in when they feel like it, drugging and hurting kids, threatening us and taking away phone calls whenever they thought we would tell our parents about what was going on. One kid got 7 shots in a span of an hour, just for crying and getting agitated because they were provoking him, he slept for almost 3 days, some of us thought he was dead. This place is run like asylums such as Forest Haven were, they need to be shut down, I still haven't recovered from the trauma, some things happened there that i can't even write because they are so awful. This place needs to be investigated. It's only a matter of time before someone gets killed because of negligence.

this was the worst disgusting place I’ve ever been too, it started off with being “in a detox section” then this cold doctor kept telling me i was an addict and left me to withdraw, sick and upset for seven days straight! I came in there back in October 2015...and i couldn’t speak for myself and since he wouldn’t give me “anything too withdraw off a certain medication...he instead mocked me and told me I had a quote“problem”...but if that was the case why not help me ween off instead of putting me through days of hell and other people like I saw one girl have a seizure huge one!!! this was the most horrific experience for me but some patients being there and the only one staff member was kind he understood my situation...other then that the other staff were weren’t taking there jobs seriously and I was worst then I was coming out there then I was coming in my anxiety was higher and much more didn’t help, if u want to stay alive? astray from this place!

My experience is with outpatient services only. They have proven to be incredibly unresponsive, in that I've been calling them for the past three weeks, leaving messages because no one picks up the phone, and no one has responded. And now I find they've attempted to bill my old insurance for my last visit, despite having given them new insurance information. Dr. Ramos is pretty nice and competent, but the office overall is a mess. I do not recommend the outpatient clinic, and will be switching providers myself.

Cherita Reams

The place has only one phyicatrist on staff whom does not call or give you an update on your loved one. On top of that, if a patient attacks another patient there the staff tries to brush it under the rug.

Elaine Perry

My son was in the hospital and was transferred here because there was and open bed. As soon as we came we were in lock down. They didn't let me leave with my son when I told them this wasn't the right place for him. They kept him there for a while.

Emily Reed

I found it very different then the other hospitals I was in. The girls were horrible to me and there was a huge fight one night causing someone to faint and more then 10 panic attacks it was very bad there and lots of lockdowns over all I wouldn't choose this as my first star hospital

The staff are underpaid psychotic drunks and drug addicts and they are in there raping and sexually abusing their patients. They also give injections just for looking at a nurses wrong. If you want a foreign nurse and psychiatrist who dose not understand english better yet our culture go there. Detox and the Psychiatric ward are on the same floor so treatment for addiction is interrupted by constant mental health crisis that may occur anytime of day. I would not recommend this institution to anyone that cared about there love ones mental health or drug and alcohol recovery.

Natasha Gazelle

My daughter was transferred directly from an emergency room - my insurance covered PIW but not the hospital we'd gone to the emergency room of. It was over a holiday weekend, and though they did not tell us on admission (they told us quite the contrary, in fact) there were no therapeutic services available over the long weekend. My daughter waited more than 90 hours to see a doctor or a licensed social worker. It was clean, it seemed safe, but she got no therapy, no coping skills out of it. And she came out an expert in cutting, given the 90 hours of unstructured time she spent with the other girls on the ward. All in all, it destroyed any trust my daughter has in the mental healthcare system. And mine too. They had the audacity, later, to bill us for therapeutic care over that long weekend that my daughter never received. I've gone back to my insurance provider to assert they are engaged in insurance fraud.

montana west

wow it’s crazy seeing so many bad reviews because my experience in PIW was positive I was 17 when I was transferred there from the hospital and ofcourse my first reaction was I didn’t want to be there but after my first two days I was comfortable and the staff was very very nice & helpful. I walked out of PIW with a new mindset on life I am now 19 & I would go back if felt necessary.

They are just pushing pills. No therapy whatsoever. Shockingly poor conditions. Over feeding obese individuals. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for true mental health care. Please stay away!

Llenk Tink

I was sent to this hospital when i was 16, if your child is suffering from any mental illness DO NOT send them here. It’s mostly children with behavioral problems that are sent here and because of that the staff treat the other patients like troubled kids and don’t care for them. It felt more like jail then somewhere to get help.

The Day Center for C-PTSD is one of the best in the world and a leader in teaching other programs. They saved my and many other lives. I saw many though who's insurance would not pay as much time as they needed in the program. The therapists are the best. They deal with extremely traumatized people. The inpatient is separated fro the general inpatient. But as always, you get out of it what you put into it.

Annie k

Staff were ignorant and abusive, as were many clients. I was one of the only female and never felt safe. Genuinely a horrible place! Please go anywhere else. Sibley has a great inpatient unit.

Derrick Wallace

This Place was the Worst. I was in the Adolescents Unit. I was Under too Much Stress Regarding PIW lying to my Family. One Night I was Struck in My Left Leg and Sedated with a Needle to my Left Backside. The Medicine in the Needle that I was given gave me an Allergic Reaction. I Now have Nerve Damage in my Left Leg and Left Foot. I am currently 17 Years old. But that Tragic happened when I was Only 16. I can No longer Run or do Any of the Fun Thing I Used to do. Please Be Cautious when sending to PIW !

/// Open Letter to the Psychiatric Institute of Washington After the Death of My Friend/ // Dear Post-traumatic Disorders Program, Psychiatric Institute of Washington, A close and dear friend is dead. She was a patient at your hospital, and a few days ago she sent me this text: "I left the trauma program after 48 hours. I was appalled at the environment, the terrible therapy and being treated like a prisoner. I went there looking for healing and support and found the experience even more traumatic. Western mental health systems are dehumanizing and insane." That was the last message I ever received from her. I got a call that my friend's body was found in the river: she drowned herself. After many weeks of searching she came to your program in what was to be her last act of hope. My friend made a great effort in a time of utter despair. She trusted you. I am stricken with grief but I am not looking to blame. Suicide is a human mystery and nobody can know why one person chooses to endure while another chooses to end their life. She is not here to help us understand. But when she was here, were you listening? Did you offer refuge and kindness? What pretense of behavioral science can absolve you of the basic duty to be gentle and loving to a human being in pain? No, I don't want to blame. As I find the courage to write this letter, I have hope that you might understand. I hope that someone reading this letter might now take this chance and really hear my friend, really understand what her last message says about your program. But I also have a fear. I fear that you will listen instead to what you think you already know about her. I am afraid that once again you will just use diagnosis and assessment to disqualify and dismiss her, in the same way that destroyed her last act of hope. I am afraid that, to my friend's death, you will just add another tragedy. Sincerely, Will Hall

The kids are out of control. If you go to this place, your going to come out worse than when you first got in here.

On the children's unit they have no underwear or bras for girls and I was forced to wear boxers. in one of the rooms the pressure on the shower faucet was so bad it could damage your skin and the doctor Tracy Meyers tried to compare me to the other patients by how long my stay was. She was a complete and utter unprofessional and gave me different anxiety pills everyday as well as changing my sleeping pills almost everyday too, there were also college students coming to observe various patients including me while "Dr" Meyers called me "attention seeking", after that she dismissed be and tried to give me a PRN for "anxiety". Certain staff were rude and I feel like their attitudes towards me made them label me with ODD.

They are very under staffed and they let everyone run wild. This place is best suited for behavior disorders not depression/ anxiety because they dont do anything. They didn’t tell me I was being released until my dad was on his way and they also changed my meds and didn’t give me a prescription for the outside

Horrible nightmare Staff abusive Not sure if psychiatrist are legit nor other staff Will hold you against your will and drug you to get insurance especially if Medicaid. Unprofessional liars. Should be under federal investigation since the claim is they're under Department of Defense and Tricare They also claim no liabilities

Detox is full of homeless people trying to get food and a warm bed. You will not be safe in this hospital as they DO NOT have in house security.

My brother was sent to the adolescent unit for mental issues. During his stay he was very depressed and didn't talk or engage in the activities they provided. after visiting my brother, my mother spoke to staff asking that they keep great watch on him. That same night my mother received a phone call that my brother was sent to the hospital (they didn't even know where they had sent him) for a nose bleed. In the early morning, my mother got a call from the hospital saying that my brother had a broken rib and they were holding him because THEY!!! Felt it was unsafe for him to return to PIW! The staff is unprofessional , the children are unsupervised and not helped for their problems. There is no education there at all. The children are given arts and craft, and staff's cellphones to do whatever they please. There is no documents filled out or reported about the well being of these children. This place is pretty much a daycare from hell. I strongly believe someone with high power and authority needs to shut that place down!

I'm 11 and I've spent 8 days at the adolescent unit of PIW for being dumb, bad kid. I thought I would be stuck with creepy "coo-coo" kids but the people there are actually very cool and chill if you don't get them angry. You shouldn't try to mess with them, they are there for a reason; being dangerous. Boys are not allowed in girls rooms, and girls are not allowed in boys rooms; typical rule. They check on you every 15 minutes, 24/7. The staff there is constantly changing. The average stay is 7 days. The more you fight, the longer you'll stay. There are multiple units; 2 adolescent units; one for the bad kids; the other for the worst kids. Adult patients are separated from the kids. People there are always starting fights, kind of like jail. They give injections ("booty juice") for a mental breakdown ("code lavender"). You can't go outside unless if you are 18+ years unless if they say so. They also have a homeless person unit. They have a gym and a cafeteria, nice large windows, nice soft beds, very clean, nice furniture, great food and great beverages. Got my first kiss there with Saiquan on Valentine's Day (awwww). They have games like Connect 4 or Uno, they have TV's. They have a "Quiet Room" where you punch a mattress to release anger. They have a "Group Room" to talk. Nurses always at the counter. Different staff. different rules. Great great great experience here. I would feel very comfortable coming back if I need any more help.

Shawn Edwards

One of the worst acute care facilities in a 200 mile area. I used to think Dominion was bad but it is like club med compared to this place. Under staffed and the ones that are there just don’t care. Ignore their patients and give them the bare minimum to collect their money. Doctors are inaccessible and judging by the facility they are working at must be incompetent. Very sad place and a danger to society.

Elias Gibson

Dominique Hill

hate this place they hold you against your will you in there for months ,years I watched a boy gets stuck in the butt with a needle I watch girls fight I watch girls having relationships with boys it's crazy in there if you want to help your kids don't send them there give them love what is a thousand-watt the love and attention from their parents why put someone the crazy hospital because of something did I cried and promised myself I would never go back you got a little kid when they're five years old because they hype they want to play I hope nobody can make it there

susan slugg

I had a very positive experience there. Therapists and Social Workers were very good and so were the nurses and support staff. I will definitely recommend it to other people.

Erica Johnson

I hated that place. All the staff dose is just stand their just waiting for their next paycheck. Sometimes they would give kids needles just saying something to them. If you have to go their your going to come out worse than you came

Aaron Wheeler

If I could give this place a negative 10 stars I would. I should have trusted the reviews. Had a loved one check in Oct 2017. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Dirty, lack of staff, lack of staff that cares. Weekends are minimally staffed. Kids fighting and bullying other patients/staff. Ft Belvoir sent us here. The Ft Belvoir social worked told us the my loved one could check out at anytime. Lies. Once you are checked in to PIW, you can't check out unless you sign a medical waiver. Once the waiver is signed, PIW has up to 48 hours to release you. You can't just leave. Tricare is paying for this horrible service. PIW should not be on a Tricare approved care list. Email me if you have any doubt before sending a child here. Please don't.
