REVIEWS OF Cox Stephen M MD PSC IN Kentucky

25 years ago, I saw Dr Stephen Cox for a crippling anxiety disorder (I could not hold food down) and OCD/Depression. My previous psychiatrist had almost fallen asleep during the first two appts., and prescribed a medicine that made me worse. He remains one of the two doctors, Dr. Daniel Nahum being the other, who saved my life. I am nearing 50 now and I still struggle, but Dr. Cox helped me during some of my darkest days and I am so very grateful. He remains one of the most caring and responsive doctors I ever had. I wish I could still see him but I'm on medicaid. Please see him if you can. He's a good man. I should have written a letter a long time ago. I hope this review adequately expresses my gratitude. Thank you so much Dr. Cox.

Dr. Cox saved my life, I suffer for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and anxiety and crippling depression as a result of both. He was willing to listen to me, provide me with solutions and put me on the right path to becoming myself again on the first visit. I do not fall under the stereotypical PTSD patient that came back from combat, which I am guilty of thinking are the only people who could be diagnosed with PTSD. On my first visit he listened, took detailed notes, asked relevant questions and began a strict regime of things I needed to do to get my life back. I got my life back within a month thanks to him. Anyone suffering from similar issues I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Cox and his staff. He will give you the hope, help, and the expertise you need.

I have recently started seeing Dr. Cox for a large range of symptoms for my anxiety disorder, including: shortness of breath as well as fear of driving, large crowds, and social situations. Dr. Cox was able to explain the physiological reasons for these symptoms, and prescribe a treatment plan, which has helped immensely. He spent a good deal of time with me and made me understand the disorder. The treatment has been very helpful, and I feel like a new person.

Solved the diagnosis of PNES/seizure activity with anxiety and ocd. I came to see Dr.Cox in November of 2018 and he turned my life around during the scariest time in my life and helped me so much!

Never was able to have an experience with Dr. Cox, I called to make an appointment and the first thing I was informed of is that he does not take insurance, I was A little taken back by that but then I asked how much each visit was, and was told the first visit is $550 and $250 every visit after. Someone who really cares about people wouldn't try to hurt them financially when they are already going through a hard time. I guess he only helps those with LOTS of money, which if you ask me shows his true intentions.

My experience with Dr Cox has been wonderful. I was a bit nervous for my first appointment because a lot of doctors in my experience make me feel like I don't know anything about myself and want to rush me out the door. Dr Cox made me feel comfortable as soon as I was in his office. He listens and talks to you like a friend. He is very patient with you and it feels good to just talk with him. I highly reccomend him. Thank you Dr. Cox!

I've been struggling with severe anxiety, panic attacks and extreme hypochondria most my life. I began seeing Doctor Cox a little over three years ago now and he's been more help than I could have imagined. He's very kind and always takes the time to listen to what you have to say. I saw many psychiatrists in the past and they made me feel hopeless and I even refused to seek further treatment for a long time due to the experiences I had with them. A family member suggested I go see Dr. Cox and I'm glad I did. I do still struggle with these issues, but the help I've received from Dr. Cox has been very beneficial to my overall mental health. Try him out. He's very good at what he does.

First, I was very, very, very nervous about seeing a psychiatrist for the first time. Dr. Cox is a very personable, patient man. The tone of his voice alone helped put me at ease. I not only cried during our appointment, but I laughed as well. He is certainly NOT the stereotypical psychiatrist. He is very, very profession, but he is also a normal person. He has the perfect combination of both qualities! I should have seen a psychiatrist years ago, but put it off due to my anxiousness of going to that first appointment. Now, I do not know why I waited. I needed this appointment. I am so glad I chose to see Dr. Cox! If you have anxiety issues that you are trying to "cope" with on your own, as I have done for many years, there is no reason to wait. I would also like to state that when I was reading these reviews I was a bit skeptical, Everything sounded so good. As we all know, if it sounds too good it is likely not true. Well, I now know that everyone who has written a review about him has been VERY honest. Your mental health is equally as important as your physical health. If you had an ear infection that was hurting you physically you would seek treatment. Anxiety, or mental health, issues are no different. Those issues need treatment also! With a psychiatrist like Dr. Cox out there, there is no reason to not seek the help you likely need. Again, he is great! I would recommend him to anyone! Thank you Dr. Cox!

I've been seeing Dr. Cox for over a year now. I have suffered from a panic disorder for over 10 years and had always seen general practitioners who would just keep slapping on antidepressant after antidepressant to try to find one to that would work. Dr. Cox is a master at identifying underlying issues and utilizing a combination of medication and therapy to eliminate panic disorder completely. I'm happy to say I haven't had a panic attack since I have been seeing him as a patient. I earned a 6 figure income before my anxiety caused me to seek easy employment to relieve the pressure and now Dr Cox has given me my life back and I am forever grateful.

I have been seeing Dr. Cox for several years. From the moment I walked into the door, I felt at home. Dr. Cox and his receptionist Angela are the kindest, most caring people I’ve ever met. Dr Cox has been great from day one. He genuinely cares about his patients and goes above and beyond for them. I love him!! Would highly recommend.

I have been seeing Dr.Cox for a year now. To sum him up in a few words he is an excellent Dr who truly cares about his patients. After years of going doctors only to be given medication after medication that quit working after 2 or 3 months. Dr. Cox prescribed me a medication (Nardill) that changed my life. I have suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for years and i was at my wits end. Thanks to Dr. Cox, I feel better than I have in my entire life. I never thought I could feel normal again. I would strongly recommend anyone with anxiety or depression to contact Dr.Cox or someone and get the help you need. I believe without his help I would't be here today. Contrary to what most of the doctors believe there is a medication out there does work with no side effects or addiction worries. I can't say enough about Dr.Cox and the medication he prescribed for me.

I saw Dr. Cox briefly for my anxiety and panic and he was the best doctor I've ever had. Sadly, the price for a visit was too costly and I had to stop going otherwise I'd have stayed with him. Dr. Cox's prices are very reasonable compared to other psychiatrists and he is worth more than he charges, but I personally could not afford it at the time. I would suggest that if a person suffers from panic attacks or anxiety to the point that it disrupts your life you should consider paying for Dr. Cox to at least see if he can help you. I learned a lot about the disorder through him. I went for over a year without my medication and sadly my disorder is right back where it was before I saw Dr. Cox, including having to be taken to the ER for panic several times. Even though the price is high, I am considering trying to see him again because my family doctor isn't really helping me the way Dr. Cox did. He is non judgemental and he really understands what it's like to actually live with anxiety. He has extensive knowledge about how the disorder affects brain function and the medications that are used to treat anxiety. I totally trusted his advice and expertise while under his care. The drugs used to treat panic disorder can be habit forming as well as dangerous and that can be scary for a person who suffers from anxiety. I felt well taken care of and secure he would not put me into a situation where I would become addicted to my medications. I also learned that the stigma associated with the medications to treat panic disorder has been acquired by a small faction of people who have abused them, and I was assured that patients who need it hardly ever end up abusing it. I was afraid they would immediately turn me into an addict because of all of the horror stories I had heard and seen. That fear my was my anxiety and ignorance talking, and I was impressed by his ability to understand and reassure me that I was safe, and his willingness to treat patients like myself with compassion meant the world to me. His office clerk was very nice and calming as well. It took me years to find a doctor who finally diagnosed me with anxiety and panic disorder and then that doctor retired and I was left with what I thought would be like finding a needle in a haystack. I thought my entire life I was just "crazy" and there was no hope for me. Counselors missed the diagnosis of anxiety and panic. My family doctor said I had hormonal problems and then put me on a list of SSRI's. None of the medications I tried before worked for me, and some made me worse. I had given up hope. I was at my wits end, couldn't hardly leave my home, I was to the point where life was unbearable due to the fear and panic. Dr. Cox literally saved my life. Even today when my panic gets so bad that I think I can't manage I still think about the things I learned about my disorder through Dr. Cox and I always know that there's hope that things will get better and that there's a person out there who can help people such as myself.

Let me first start out by saying I am extremely hesitant to anyone telling me "psychatric" problems I might have, due to stubbornness and pride, and my family practitioner would just put me on every depression medication whether I was depressed or not, stating 'it can be used for other things'. I always felt like anything can be solved to suck it up and get over it. My significant other actually called in to see when I could get an appointment because HE saw there was something wrong with me and I reluctantly went. I've been treated by Dr. Cox for over two years now, and I have not only learned I had GAD (general anxiety disorder), small amount of fear of being in large crowds in a closed in areas (afraid to go into a panic attack), ADD, and recently a small crossover with depressive bi-polar. No wonder I couldn't keep a stable job, relationships, and friendships. I used to cancel plans bc I was too anxiety ridden all the sudden to go, when my brain REALLY wanted to go, all resorting in being the "flakey" friend, daughter, girlfriend. Dr. Cox isn't afraid to prescribe medication even though it's looked down upon, due to the endemic of illegal drug use giving these drugs a bad name. Why? Because he is educated, world traveled and studied and has written many doctrines on medications and studies. He's a brilliant man and has saved my life. To be honest, I don't know if I would be here if it wasn't for his prompt 24/7 services and his awesome administrative director, Angela. She has such a calming voice and always makes me feel good about myself, even when I have to call bc I missed an appointment! You would be surprised how hard that is for one with GAD. IF YOU are sick and tired of being sick and tired of your stomach in your throat, depression, etc., OCD, just about ANYTHING, he is your psychatrist to go to. Even more he continues his studies of medicine, and for science statistical people like me, have shown me studies he performed and how they worked. I enjoy our visits just so I can learn something interesting or new. Yes he is located in LEX, KY, but because he is such an influential person in my life, I fly wherever I am for my job for our appointments, or he helps me in extreme situations to do phone checkups. If you suffer from GAD, go on Amazon prime and get his BCalm inhaler. It's a great price and it WORKS! Long story short, I have kept a consistent job for three years, have had a stable relationship and I make every obligation I need to. Thanks Dr. Cox!

So glad I went!!! Before I began seeing Dr. Cox I had been to a number of other healthcare providers. For almost three years I was searching for a doctor that would listen to my symptoms. I have always struggled with procrastination and, recently, it began to impact my personal and professional life. This caused me to have a lot of anxiety and stress. I fell so far behind in my work that I didn’t even want to get out of bed or even make eye-contact with my peers or co-workers. Gradually, I was so ashamed and scared of social interaction that I would avoid all of my responsibilities. I sought help and most doctors thought I was depressed, but I never felt like this was the correct diagnosis so I stopped looking for help. Then I began professional school. Almost immediately, I began having TONS of anxiety and at one point I had a panic attack. I realized I needed help, and that’s when I found Dr. Cox. I was so nervous about making an appointment, I almost didn’t go, but, I did. From day-one, Dr. Cox and his office made me feel at home. By the second visit, I felt like I had my life back under control. True, he doesn’t accept insurance, but this really lets him work for the patient, and not for your insurance company. It’s worth every penny! Plus, your insurance might let you submit an out-of-network claim after your visit. I wanted to write this to give others courage to seek help. Nothing is wrong with you, and the hardships you’re facing can be tackled. If you’re having doubt about seeking help, DON’T! Do your research and know what you want to change about your life and I am confident Dr. Cox can help you get your life back. So happy I found a great practitioner!!!

When I walked into the office of Dr. Cox, I was a shell of the person I used to be. I was suffering from severe panic attacks every single day. I went from a straight 4.0 student to someone who was terrified to go to class. I was so fearful that I would have a panic attack in public that I confined myself to my room-- sometimes for days. I felt absolutely hopeless and I saw no light at the end of the tunnel. I had been to the emergency room and several walk-in clinics, but no one could tell me what was wrong with me. I thought that the only solution would be to medically withdrawal from college. I'm happy to say that I am back to my old self and still in school, all thanks to Dr. Cox. I told Dr. Cox that I was having panic attacks so severe that I completely lost my appetite and I was always exhausted. I went from 130 pounds to 105 pounds in only a few months and I was barely functioning. I told him that I physically could not get myself to go to class most days. Dr. Cox listened to every word I said and took me seriously. As a 21 year old, most medical don't take me seriously when I complain about my anxiety. Dr. Cox was the first doctor that made me feel like I wasn't crazy. He quickly recognized that my symptoms were consistent with those of panic disorder. He took the time to explain exactly what the disorder is and treatment options. He put me on a few medications and gave me hope for the first time in months. While I was adjusting to my medications, Dr. Cox took the time to call me after office hours to check up on me. He helped me to identify my triggers and he advised me on how to prepare for panic-inducing situations and how to calm a panic attack. It took a few weeks to find the right medications for me, but Dr. Cox remained optimistic and always made me feel like he was rooting for my success. Dr. Cox is extremely compassionate and empathetic. He takes the time to get to know you and is extremely well-educated. I now feel the best I have in months-- maybe years! I now know that I'm not crazy, and there's a light at the end of the tunnel. My treatment process wasn't always easy, but I never felt alone. If you are struggling with panic/anxiety/depression, I hope that this helps you to see that things can get better. You just have to find the right psychiatrist for you. For me, Dr. Cox is a perfect fit and I'd strongly recommend him for treating panic and anxiety related issues. The world needs more psychiatrists like him!

This is meant to be more informative, and I hope, helpful. - This review is mostly meant for fellow veterans. Even if Dr. Cox isn't the right fit for you or geographically out of your way, I wanted to share that after ten-plus years of being told I needed specific treatments and not being able to proceed, there are medical professionals with vast knowledge, who will take the time to listen to you and carry out the necessary evaluations, and who will help find the right treatment plan. It's still not easy, but my ability to contribute to friends, family, and at work has improved on a level I didn't think was possible. - As a disabled veteran, I've found that some of the treatments available are limited by policy implications at the VA. Dr. Cox has worked at the Veteran's Administration in the past and is knowledgeable and experienced in treating veterans. For example, the VA has recommended two treatments for me personally in the same medical report that they stated they don't prescribe the medication that they recommend. - Dr. Cox takes the time to look at your past medical records and considers what other physicians and psychiatrists have noted in their evaluations. He combines that with his own extensive experience, personal research, and professional knowledge. - He treats each individual patient as an individual. NOT as a statistic. - There is no substitute for doing your own research and even asking other doctors for recommendations, which is how I discovered Dr. Cox. The positive thing about the VA is that they recommended seeking outside treatment due to policy limitations. - On a personal level, I can't say enough good things about Dr. Cox. He truly takes the time to understand you as a person and as a patient, combining a human understanding with medical knowledge, research, and evaluations.

A week ago I called to make an appointment for a relative. After giving out telephone numbers, home address, birth dates and social security numbers, I was told that I could expect a return call letting me know if the doctor would accept him as a new patient. I called at the end of the next day to see if perhaps I had missed a call. Nope. Six days later I call them back and speak to the same person and was told that the doctor would not be taking him on as a patient. I have never heard of such unprofessional behavior in this field and I am extremely disappointed after reading all of the excellent reviews. I guess you have to know someone or be part of the Lexington Elite to be accepted here.

I began to see Dr. Cox last year, and I am so grateful to have been able to experience working with a true professional. I have struggled with anxiety, depression and ADD for years. Finding a doctor who doesn't fear prescribing is a rarity these days, and it is crucial for me to have a doctor with expertise in this area. I have been to Psychiatrists who are afraid to prescribe benzodiazepines, and tell you up front that they will begin by tapering your dose. This is understandable if (after) being evaluated it is clear that the patient has an addiction or is on an extremely high dose that may be deemed unnecessary when combined with the right antidepressant. When you are seeking out the help of a Psychiatrist, it's important that you find one that's interest is in helping you to reach optimal mental health. If their interest is in protecting their license out of the fear of doing their job, walk away. Certainly there are bad doctors who overprescribe, and patients who fall victim to addiction. I can tell you from my experience that Dr. Cox is not one of them. He uses his vast experience and expertise to treat you individually and without judgement. Yes, it is expensive to see him, but worth every penny when you need a doctor that knows what he's doing. If you are having difficulty finding a doctor to meet your needs, there is hope. Dr. Cox will provide the service that is required when your mental health is in jeopardy without the bs. I highly recommend him!

I'm ashamed it has taken me this long to write a review, but considering that gaining a broader attention span was one of my problems, it make sense that NOW I am able to go ahead, and get this done! Dr. Cox is a wonderful person. He isn't there to figure you out and push solutions on you, he's there to let you, let him get to know you. He never interrupts, waits patiently to respond to you, no matter how much you have to say, and keeps his personal opinions, and emotions out of his practice. Growing up, I have suffered from ADD and anxiety to the degree that it impaired many of my daily activities. I was on and off meds and switched around to a lot of different doctors, since my parents thought having this capability within their financial resources would provide the best solution. Suffice it to say, I wish they would have just let me be a wild child and not have taken me around to so many doctors, but they were only doing their best. With this being said, after seeing plenty of doctors that "eye you up" as soon as you walk through their door, before hurdling diagnosis's at you, it was refreshing to sit with Dr. Cox, and do some talking myself. It was almost uncomfortable for me at first, having some mild form of PTSD towards any therapeutic doctor, seeing how I was expected to do the talking (because, after all, I was there to see HIM, not the other way around), but by the end of my first appointment, I could tell I liked Dr. Cox, and was excited to see what kind of progress we would make. Over our time together, I have struggled with alcohol abuse, extreme loneliness/social anxiety, and severe depression, among the plethora of my insanities ;) Dr. Cox introduced me to Naltrexone and "The Cure for Alcoholism," by Roy Eskepa, and Thos has helped me a lot. I've been through a lot with social anxiety, and I could go on and on, on how much it affected my daily lifestyle (I was agoraphobic, to an extremity), but instead I'll just tell you that Dr. Cox got me out of my box. Dr. Cox has also taught me to cope with ADD, which is an ongoing struggle, but has gotten easier. Life's pretty good! ...And I can honestly, earnestly, and humbly say, that I couldn't have done these things without Dr. Cox.

PAMELA HATTON

Dr. Cox is the first psychiatrist out of the many that I've seen over the years that I truly admire. I suffer from Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia as well as PTSD and he is the ONLY Dr. that truly understands what living with Panic Disorder is like, a true daily hell. He is the only Psychiatrist that can truly break down different anxiety disorders and having had Panic Disorder for a little over 20 years he has been the only Psychiatrist that could break it down for me, teach me how a "normal" brain reacts to fear compared to that of a person who suffers from Panic Disorder. He is very compassionate, treats you with kindness, understands exactly what REAL anxiety disorders are like, and extremely helpful.. He actually cares about his patients and doesn't see you as a big dollar sign when you walk into his office.. The staff is great as well, you feel like part of a great supporting family. I would never want another Psychiatrist treating me.. He does not keep you all wiped out on medication's as some do but he got me on the proper medication/medications on the very first time I had an appt..The only Dr. I truly look forward to going to and he does it all in a very professional manner while still being a true person also..I work part time as a nurse so I do understand medical terminology but not a lot psychiatric disorder terminology since it requires almost an entirely different type of medical terminology. He can easily break it down for you to where you finally understand.. An amazing Dr., in my opinion.. I did see one negative review but something had to be wrong as Dr. Cox is THE nicest Psychiatrist I have yet to meet and very personable. I would give 10 stars if possible!!!!!! Thank you Dr. Cox for always being there for me and for being not just a great Psychiatrist but also a human being
