"Vacationed" at River Bend back in late February due to a domestic violence altercation between my husband and I on our way back to Illinois.
Having been misdiagnosed as Bipolar up until the time of the incident, an ill informed trauma doctor at the local emergency room was intimidated by my "fight or flight" behavior. Not knowing me from Joe Shmoe off the street, he chalked said behavior up as me being "manic" and put me on an involuntary 72 hour hold/adult time out at the nearest "nut hut". In my case, this happened to be River Bend in West Lafayette.
To my surprise, I was treated very, very well by almost all of the staff at River Bend. From the social workers, to administrative staff, to the psychiatrists, to the floor techs. I feel that everyone who I dealt with during my unplanned stay went above and beyond to investigate the situation as well as get to know me as a human being - not just a patient.
Shout out to Dr. Rogers. She is an amazing psychiatrist as well as an all around compassionate soul. I am so glad to have crossed paths with you. I am not a fan of doctors, but you made quite the impression. Thank you for your care and concern for my well being. It made my stay much more tolerable that I had originally anticipated.
I would also like to thank the multiple staff who used their resources to provide me with a free cab ride from West Lafayette all the way home to Sandwich, Illinois. I appreciate your generosity more than you realize and have every intention of paying it forward, somehow.
The only negative about the situation was a very antisocial psychiatrist. I can't remember his name, but he run group first thing every morning. He expected our full participation, but had a short fuse for those who actively participated outside a specific window. He treated us like a paycheck - as opposed to people. Someone may want to give him a crash course in people skills. We are human beings, afterall; not just job security.
Other than having to deal with "Dr. Grumpy", I would say it was a relatively painless experience. I would highly recommend River Bend to anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, in need of real help.
