This place is incompetent and negligent. Don’t go here. They kicked me out of php for failing to finish ONE meal. So an eating disorder treatment center kicked me out for ... having an eating disorder.

Madaline Leslie

I hate this place! They treat me as if I am an incompetent child, rather than an adult, and refuse to recognize my progress! I have had to come here for four years now, and haven't had an eating disorder in two, but these "doctors" will decline my requests to be discharged. The care here is unsatisfactory, and does not seem to be professional. Would not recommend this "treatment center."

After reading so many bad reviews of the Charis Center, I was pretty hesitant to go to PHP there. However, I have found the staff incredibly compassionate and eager to help anyway they can. They are open and honest about things I can improve on, but they are so quick to give you encouragement and praise after accomplishing something challenging. The groups and individual therapy are so helpful as they help you to identify the issues behind your eating disorder, and they talk about many different coping skills and ways to deal with eating disorder thoughts, urges, and behaviors. They encourage you to put what you learn into to practice during the weekends and give helpful homework to encourage using different skills. They know recovery is a process and don’t expect perfection.

When we realized my daughter had an eating disorder, we were faced with the reality that we had no idea how to help her. Thankfully, we found the Charis Center. I read reviews from a variety of sources. A pattern soon became evident - individuals who were deep in the throes of the eating disorder had negative reviews. I now understand the Eating Disorder does not want the patient to get help. I know this because our family saw this first hand. The Charis Center was a Godsend for our family. Eating Disorders impact the whole family. The Charis Center taught my daughter AND our family the skills we need to handle the challenges that accompany Eating Disorders. These are skills that we now use to deal with all life sends our way. Did I get my daughter back the way she was before the Eating Disorder? No - she was healthier, stronger, more open, and more empathetic. She will never be the same but the smile she had before ED came into her life returned and she was able to love herself again! When you read reviews, please try to understand who is writing the review - is it the Eating Disorder or is it someone on the path to recovery? The reviews sound very different. Is this an easy journey for the patient and the Family? No, it is not. You will hear things you don’t want to hear and have to deal with difficult issues. Is it worth the hard work? Absolutely and it is just the start of the journey. With the Charis Center guiding you along the way, you will find this is the just the start of a life changing and beautiful experience. Thank you Charis Center for a gift I cannot repay!

My sibling was referred to Charis by her physician, and completed the intake process. It was determined that she needed outpatient treatment, and was given a detailed eating plan. Her school decided it was appropriate to use her diagnosis to attempt to isolate her from her friends and make an already stressful situation more stressful for her. When my mother contacted the doctor at Charis to get her advice on what she called the school nurse's unnecessary punishment of my sister, the doctor replied that "she should be punished, because she got herself into this situation." So I guess if you want your child or loved one to feel like their eating disorder is something disgusting that they should be punished for rather than treated like a human being with a disease, this is the place to take them. Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere.

About 5 years ago i was diagnosed with Anorexia. I was extremely malnourished and in need of desperate help. After battling my eating disorder for over a year...nearly dying...I was referred to the Charis Center and then referred to Methodist Hospital for their Behavioral Health unit. While I was in the lock down facility...the therapists, nurses, and Doctors helped me through a dark time in my life. I am SO grateful that this kind of place is available for children...otherwise I don't think I'd be alive. The staff has inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field where I will be able to help others as they did for me when I had an eating disorder years ago. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone battling an eating disorder. It will be hard, but it will ALL be worth it I promise. The hardships only make you stronger afterwards.

I absolutely love this place. In my personal experience the people who don’t like it or think it’s a terrible place are people who are still really sick and don’t want to put in work to get better. If you’re willing to take personal accountability for your progress instead of expecting it to be handed to you then Charis is where you should go. If you’re willing to accept that recovery isn’t linear and often takes years of work then Charis is where you should go. They’re compassionate and amazing I don’t know where I would be without Dr. Richardson or the fact that Charis has an on call. Dr. Rouse can be gruff and hard to talk to but usually she only upsets people because she doesn’t put up with nonsense and she doesn’t allow you to make excuses for continued sickness. I love this place I’d give it ten stars if I could.

The Charis Center treats the whole patient. If you are dedicated to your recovery, this is the place to be. It is so hard to find specialists in this area, so I am grateful that this is located so close to my home and business. I see a Psychiatrist, a Psychologist, an Internist, a Dietitian, and a Family Psychologist at the center. I also attend group therapy. The recovery process takes a lot of time and effort, but it is worth it. I have been a patient at Charis for almost 9 months so far. I am not sure when my journey will end, but the visits reduce in frequency over time.

The Charis Center has been a lifesaver for our family. Every staff member has treated our daughter with compassion and understanding in fighting her eating disorder. I would HIGHLY recommend this facility.

This place is absolutely psychotic. If you are seeking treatment of any sorts for assistance with eating disorders, weight issues, body image, etc…, Indianapolis is FULL of other resources. This institution has done nothing but create trauma for my family and I.

Valerie Weesner is an absolute idiot. She's one of the "psychologists" at this farcical establishment. I do not know the person who posted below, but she is absolutely correct in her assessment of what is surely an illegal, unprofessional, traumatizing faux medical practice.

I didn't always enjoy visiting The Charis Center, Dr. Cumberlander, Dr. Rouse, Dr. Patel and Mackenzie can certainly vouch for that! However, they literally saved my life. The compassion, patience, and grace I have received from the staff as a whole at Charis is priceless. There's not many health care providers nowadays that put you in touch immediately with a provider if you're in crisis, or just need someone to chat with. There were times over the years that I would have written a bitter, nasty review for Charis, but that's only because I was so sick, I couldn't separate my disorder from reality. Coming to Charis wont' necessarily be easy, and they ABSOLUTELY do not play. If you want to get better, this is the place for you, if you don't and want to point fingers and blame and argue, don't waste their time. It gets better. Be kind to yourself and give them a chance. It's worth every penny.

I have been a patient at Charis off and on since 2012. I have participated in the intensive outpatient program (iop), partial hospitalization program (php), individual therapy, nutritional counseling, and group therapy. The treatment providers at Charis treat the whole person. I continuously feel supported and met where I am at in my recovery journey. I would strongly recommend the Charis Center to anyone struggling to recover from an eating disorder. If you are recovery focused and willing to work honestly on yourself- Charis is your place. The staff have been compassionate advocates for eating disorder recovery. At times, I have slipped up with behaviors, the holistic team of therapists, dietitians, md, psychiatrists, and even art and trauma specialist have held me accountable and empowered me to take/ remain in the driver's seat of my recovery. The medical doctor did a wonderful job helping me explain and provide psychomedical information to my family. I expressly trust the Charis Center staff and am grateful to be under the care of such a competent, passionate, powerhouse team.
